A four-metre-long python coiled around a 64-year-old woman in Thailand for two hours in her home before help arrived. Watch in for more details!

Python squeezes Thai woman for 2 hours before she's rescued by police

Woman spends a harrowing time in Python's grip

A huge python grabbed a 64-year-old woman, while she was preparing to do&nbsp;dishes at her home outside Bangkok, Thailand. She suddenly felt a sharp pain in her thigh before&nbsp;looking down&nbsp;to find a python taking hold of her.&nbsp;

Arom Arunroj told Thailand’s Thairath newspaper, “I was about to scoop some water, and when I sat down it bit me immediately. When I looked I saw the snake wrapping around me.”

The four-to-five-metre-long (13 to 16 ft) python coiled itself around her torso, squeezing her down to the floor to the kitchen.

She added, “I grabbed it by the head, but it wouldn’t release me. It only tightened.”

Pythons are non-venomous snakes, however can be even more deadly than cobras. They kill their prey by gradually squeezing the breath out of it.

After realising, the woman cried for help but it didn't arrive&nbsp;until after a neighbour happened to be walking by about an hour and half later and heard her screaming. The neighbour then called the authorities.&nbsp;

Responding police officer Anusorn Wongmalee said on Thursday (Sep 19)&nbsp;that when he arrived the woman was still leaning against her door, looking exhausted and pale, with the snake coiled around her.

The Federation of Thai Industries reported on Tuesday that automobile production in Thailand experienced a significant decline of 16.62 per cent in July compared to the same month in the previous year, with output falling to 124,829 units. This reduction was primarily attributed to a decrease in domestic sales within the country.

&nbsp;

While the July figures represent a concerning trend, they actually show a slight improvement from June's performance, which saw a more substantial year-on-year decline of 20.11 per cent. However, it's important to note that this marks the twelfth consecutive month of contraction in the Thai automotive manufacturing sector.

&nbsp;

Looking at the broader picture, the cumulative car production for the first seven months of the year, spanning from January to July, showed an even more pronounced contraction of 17.28 per cent compared to the same period in the previous year. The total output during this time frame amounted to 886,069 units.

&nbsp;

Surapong Paisitpattanapong, who serves as the spokesperson for the automotive industry division of the Federation of Thai Industries, provided additional insight into the situation during a news briefing. He emphasised that the production intended for domestic sales has seen a particularly sharp decrease, with pickup trucks being especially affected by this downturn.

&nbsp;

The federation has identified tightened auto loan policies implemented by banks as a key factor contributing to the weakened domestic sales. This credit tightening is largely a response to the high levels of household debt prevalent in the country.

&nbsp;

The impact of these factors is evident in the July domestic car sales figures, which showed a year-on-year decline of 20.58 per cent. While this represents a significant drop, it actually shows some improvement compared to June, which had witnessed an even steeper annual decline of 26.04 per cent.

&nbsp;

Thailand holds a prominent position in Southeast Asia's automotive industry, serving as the region's largest production hub and a crucial export base for several major global automakers, including industry giants like Toyota and Honda. The country is particularly known for its production of pickup trucks, which constitute a significant portion of its automotive manufacturing output.

&nbsp;

In light of the ongoing challenges, the Federation of Thai Industries has revised its projections for the year. The domestic sales target has been substantially reduced from the initial forecast of 750,000 units to a more conservative estimate of 550,000 vehicles. Similarly, the production target for the year has been adjusted downward from 1.9 million vehicles to 1.7 million units. These revisions reflect a significant scaling back of expectations compared to the previous year's production volume of 1.84 million vehicles in 2023.

&nbsp;

These developments highlight the complex challenges facing Thailand's automotive sector, which is grappling with both domestic economic pressures and broader global market dynamics.

Thailand reported a suspected first case of the new, more dangerous strain of Mpox on Wednesday (Aug 21), which the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global public health emergency.

The suspected patient landed in Bangkok on August 14 and was sent to hospital with Mpox symptoms the following morning, said Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, head of the kingdom's Department of Disease Control.

However laboratory tests are underway to confirm the strain, but officials believe it to be from Clade 1. A 66-year-old European, who travelled to Thailand from an African country, has been quarantined for now and is under observation.

"We have done a test and it is definitely mpox and not Clade 2," Thongchai told AFP.

"We are confident that the person has the Clade 1 variant, but we need to wait two more days for the final lab results to confirm," he said.

Health officials are monitoring 42 people who came into close contact with the patient, Thongchai told a news conference.

It may be mentioned here that Mpox cases and deaths are surging in Africa, where outbreaks have been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda since July.

The disease, caused by a virus transmitted from infected animals and spread between humans through close physical contact, results in fever, muscle aches, and large boil-like skin lesions.

While mpox has been known for decades, a new more deadly and more transmissible strain -- known as Clade 1b -- has driven the recent surge in cases.&nbsp;

Thailand's economy has shown unexpected resilience, growing by 2.3% in the second quarter, surpassing analysts’ forecasts of 2.1%. This economic strength, combined with the recent election of Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the country's youngest prime minister, has brought a sense of stability to markets that were previously shaken by political turmoil.

Thailand's billionaire former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra received a royal pardon shortening his parole by two weeks, his lawyer said on Saturday, a day after his daughter was elected premier by parliament.

Thaksin has been at the heart of a two-decade power struggle between the Shinawatra family and its allies on the one hand, and, on the other, a nexus of royalists, generals and old-money families that have long wielded influence over Thai governments and institutions.

After a dramatic return last August from self-exile to avoid jail time in the wake of his overthrow in a 2006 military coup, Thaksin served six months in hospital detention, due to health reasons, before being released on parole in February.

Thailand gets youngest-ever Prime Minister: Paetongtarn Shinawatra

Thailand's Pheu Thai party has chosen 37-year-old Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of billionaire ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra, as its candidate for prime minister, it announced on Thursday, a day after a court dismissed the incumbent premier in an ethics case.&nbsp;

"We decide to nominate Paetongtarn Shinawatra," party secretary general Sorawong Thienthong told a press conference in Bangkok.

Lawmakers will vote Friday in parliament -- where Pheu Thai heads a governing coalition -- on whether to approve Paetongtarn as prime minister.

"We are confident that the party and coalition parties will lead our country in helping with Thailand's economic crisis," Paetongtarn said after the announcement.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, Thailand's Constitutional Court sacked premier Srettha Thavisin after ruling he had breached regulations by appointing a cabinet minister with a criminal conviction, plunging the kingdom into fresh political uncertainty.

Pheu Thai -- the electoral vehicle of one-time Manchester City owner Thaksin -- is the largest member of a governing coalition of 11 parties that includes royalist and pro-military outfits that were once its bitter rivals.

Srettha is the party's third prime minister to be kicked out by the Constitutional Court, and is leaving office after less than a year.

Thai politics has endured two decades of chronic instability marked by coups, street protests and court orders -- much of it fuelled by the long-running battle by the military and pro-royalist establishment against progressive parties linked to their bete noire Thaksin.

The tycoon ex-premier returned to Thailand last August from 15 years in self-exile on the same day Srettha took power in an alliance with pro-military parties previously staunchly opposed to Thaksin and his followers.

The timing seemed to suggest a truce in the long-standing feud as both sides sought to see off the threat posed by the newer Move Forward Party (MFP), which won the popular vote in last year's election.

It was later blocked from forming a government.

Paetongtarn was chosen ahead of Pheu Thai stalwart Chaikasem Nitisiri, 75.

The move showed "Pheu Thai's strategy to stand by the youth movement" that has Thailand, political analyst Yuttaporn Issarachai told AFP.

But he said it would be difficult to "move on from the conservative and military influence" that has dominated Thai politics for decades.

<h2>Court cases</h2>

The case against Srettha was brought by 40 former senators appointed by the military junta that ousted an elected Pheu Thai government in a 2014 coup.

The senate also played a crucial role in blocking the MFP after last year's elections.

Senators alarmed by MFP's pledges to reform lese-majeste laws and break up powerful business monopolies refused to endorse its then-leader Pita Limjaroenrat as prime minister, and the party was forced into opposition.

The top court last week dissolved the MFP and banned Pita and its main officials from politics for 10 years.

Srettha, meanwhile, was dismissed over the appointment of Pichit Chuenban, a former lawyer associated with Thaksin.

Pichit, sentenced to six months in jail in 2008 for a graft-related offence, quit the cabinet after the case was filed in a bid to save Srettha, but the court pressed ahead with the case.

"We are confident that the party and coalition parties will lead our country in helping with Thailand's economic crisis," Paetongtarn said after the announcement. Court cases The case against Srettha was brought by 40 former senators appointed by the military junta that ousted an elected Pheu Thai government in a 2014 coup.

Thailand has announced a new set of incentives aimed at promoting joint ventures (JVs) between Thai and foreign companies in the manufacturing of automotive parts. This move by the Thai Board of Investment (BOI) is part of the government's broader efforts to position the country as a hub for the production of vehicles using all types of propulsion systems, including electric vehicles (EVs).

&nbsp;

Thailand is already Southeast Asia's largest automotive production centre and a major export base for some of the world's top carmakers. With the introduction of these new incentives, the government is looking to further strengthen its position in the automotive industry, particularly in the growing EV market.

&nbsp;

The key highlights of the incentive program are as follows:

&nbsp;

1. Additional tax exemption: Both new projects and existing parts manufacturers that are already enjoying BOI promotions, but are transforming into a JV, can now qualify for an additional two years of tax exemption. This tax exemption is capped at a total of eight years, provided the companies apply for the incentives before the end of 2025.

&nbsp;

2. Investment requirements: To be eligible for the incentives, a new JV must invest at least 100 million Thai baht (approximately USD 2.82 million) in the manufacturing of automotive parts. The JV must also comprise a Thai company and a foreign company, with the Thai firm being required to hold at least 60 per cent ownership and contribute a minimum of 30 per cent of the JV's registered capital.

&nbsp;

This move by the Thai government is a clear indication of its commitment to promoting investments in the automotive industry, particularly in the realm of alternative propulsion systems. By offering these attractive incentives, Thailand aims to attract both domestic and foreign companies to establish joint ventures and expand their manufacturing capabilities in the country.

&nbsp;

The approval of Hyundai Motor Company's investment of 1 billion Thai baht (approximately USD 28 million) to set up a facility for EV and battery assembly in Thailand further reinforces the government's efforts to position the country as a hub for the production of cutting-edge automotive technologies.

&nbsp;

Overall, these new incentives from the Thai BOI demonstrate the government's strategic focus on fostering a thriving automotive industry, with a particular emphasis on the development and manufacturing of vehicles powered by alternative propulsion systems, including electric vehicles. This move is expected to attract more investments, drive technological advancements, and solidify Thailand's position as a leading automotive production and export hub in the Southeast Asian region.&nbsp;

Thailand shocker: Mystery deaths at Bangkok's plush Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel

Six foreign nationals were found dead at the Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel in Bangkok on Tuesday (July 16). Among the deceased is at least one American of Vietnamese descent, according to the Thai government. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered an investigation of the incident to ensure that it does not impact Thailand's tourism sector.

The Thai police confirmed in a separate statement that all six victims were foreign nationals. The incident at the luxury hotel, located in a bustling tourist district known for high-end shopping and dining, comes as Thailand aims to boost its tourism industry, a key driver of Southeast Asia's second-largest economy.

"The prime minister has ordered all agencies to urgently take action to avoid impact on tourism," the government said in an official readout.

Contrary to initial reports by local media, a police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, dismissed claims that the deaths were the result of a shooting. "There is no sign of a shooting," the official told Reuters, confirming that Vietnamese nationals were among the deceased but providing no further details.

Both the US and Vietnamese embassies in Bangkok are yet to respond over the incident.

Thailand shocker: Six tourists found dead at luxury hotel in Bangkok, PM orders probe

What does a fish invasion look like? Ask fishermen in Thailand, where millions of 'alien' fish have taken over waters in the Samut Prakan province. Fishermen are complaining the invasive alien fish are literally everywhere in the waters, making it impossible for them to catch other species, according to the Bangkok Post. When female fish are caught, they are found to carry a lot of eggs inside their bodies. When their male counterparts are caught, they too are found to carry eggs in their mouths. The fish species has been identified as the blackchin tilapia.

<h2>How it started?</h2>

According to fisherman Pisamon Srisin, the locals started seeing blackchin tilapia in Tambon Khlong Dan last month. Now, only they are visible, while other species have almost disappeared, the 75-year-old fisherman complains.

The fish species breeds very fast, according to the president of the Khlong Dan Fishery Association. Thanaporn Jiansuk says that it just takes 22 days "from the egg-laying stage to hatching with as many as 99% of the eggs hatching overall."

Throughout the country, the fish species could reproduce one million offspring a day. They eat every hour, thus depleting the resources very fast and closing in on the other species. They also feed on young fish, shrimp larvae, and shellfish, which are important fishing products. It comes as no surprise that native species have disappeared from the waters.

<h2>13 provinces impacted</h2>

As per data from Thailand's Department of Fisheries, the 'alien' fish invasion has broken out in 13 coastal provinces along the Gulf of Thailand including Chanthaburi, Rayong, Samut Prakan, Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Sarat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla.

The species is native to Ghana and South Africa and was first detected in Thailand in 2012. As per reports, the current invasion is related to a 2010 research project when a private company here imported the species from Africa.
