Thailand cut cross-border electricity supplies to five locations in Myanmar on Wednesday, in an effort to stamp out online scam centres blamed for scaring away Chinese tourists.
Scam compounds have mushroomed in Myanmar's lawless borderlands, run by criminal gangs and staffed by foreigners trafficked and forced to work swindling their compatriots in an industry analysts say is worth billions of dollars.
Beijing has grown increasingly concerned about the centres as many of those involved -- both victims and perpetrators -- are Chinese.
"Thailand has stopped the electricity supply to Myanmar in five locations based on the decision of the National Security Council," Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters.

Transmission was cut at two points in Mae Sai in the north, two in Mae Sot in the west and one at Three Pagodas Pass, also in the west.
Anutin said electricity sales to Myanmar at these five locations earned Thailand around 50 million baht ($1.5 million) a month.
"The electricity supply is not being stopped because the companies violated the contract, but because the electricity is being misused for scams, drugs and call centres," Anutin said.
"No one can accuse Thailand now of being part of supporting illegal businesses."

The move came as Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra travelled to Beijing for talks with President Xi Jinping, with the scam centres likely to be on the agenda.
Fears among Chinese tourists of being kidnapped and forced to work in scam centres was blamed for a sharp drop in visitor numbers over the Lunar New Year holiday last week.
China is a hugely important market for Thailand as it seeks to rebuild its crucial tourism sector after the devastating impact of travel shutdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said the scam centres were a "national security issue".

Thai authorities on Saturday (Jan 25) announced that they have made public transport free for a week. The order was passed to address the growing air pollution problem in Bangkok. Currently, employees are being advised to work from home and schools have been shut down. The free travel offer includes buses and the city’s elevated and underground electric trains. Authorities hope the move will encourage more people to use public transport, decreasing the number of private vehicles on the road and thereby cutting one of the major contributors to the pollution.

A human rights group called on Thailand to fully investigate three soldiers for the "horrific" death of a Myanmar migrant on the border earlier this year, saying they had tortured and beaten the man.

Aung Ko Ko, 37, died after three soldiers and a Myanmar national brought him to an abandoned military bunker where they kicked and beat him with a bamboo stick for wearing the uniform of a neighbourhood watch group adorned with the Thai flag, Fortify Rights said, citing eyewitnesses and legal documents.

A Thai court convicted the Myanmar man, Sirachuch, in September to five years in prison for being an accomplice to Aung Ko Ko's death, according to Fortify Rights and the defendant's lawyer, who declined to comment further, citing the sensitivity of the case.

However, the police chief in Mae Sot, where Aung Ko Ko's body was found, told Reuters Sirachuch had not identified his accomplices.

“We have followed the legal process fully but he did not name others," Police Colonel Pittayakon Petcharat said.

Thailand soldiers tortured, killed Myanmar migrant, human rights group calls for probe

Israeli spy agency Mossad confirmed Tuesday (Nov. 12) that there was a credible threat of a plot to target Israeli tourists in Thailand. Earlier, Thailand police sounded an alarm following an internal warning that Israeli tourists may be targeted in a potential terror attack.

The warning came just ahead of the Nov. 15 Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan Island, an event popular among young Israelis. Ynet news agency reported that Thai police have intensified operations over the past days in the wake of alert and credible information hinting at a plot against tens of thousands of Israelis.

“Following recent information and the increasing fear of an attack on Israelis and Jews across Thailand, the National Security Council (NSC) urges Israelis in Thailand to heighten their alertness and heed updates," the warning message said.

The NSC advised people against flaunting their Israeli or Jewish identity in public and sharing travel plans on social media. The warning message, meanwhile, asked people to stay away from Israeli community events and to share information with local authorities about any suspicious activities.

The Full Moon gatherings are all-night beach parties held in Thailand since 1985. The event is highly popular among Israeli youth and before the COVID-19 pandemic, these parties would see participation of over half a million visitors annually.

The Thai terror plot is uncovered weeks after a similar alert was issued for Israeli tourists visiting the South Asian island nation of Sri Lanka. Israel’s national security council in October had called on Israelis to leave the country immediately. Three suspects, all allegedly linked to Iran, were later arrested in the Sri Lanka plot case.

The recent warning for Israeli tourists in Thailand comes after a pro-Palestinian mob attacked dozens of Israelis in Amsterdam who had gone there to attend a soccer match of an Israeli team on November 7 and 8 nights.
