The study findings indicate that Northeast and Midwest regions in the US saw sharp increase in gun violence on days that were hotter-than-normal.

“Our study provides strong evidence that daily temperature plays a meaningful role in gun violence fluctuations,” says study senior author Dr. Jonathan Jay, assistant professor of community health sciences at Boston University School of Public Health. Dr Jay was quoted by SciTechDaily.&nbsp;

“Our study really highlights the importance of heat adaptation strategies that can be used all year, as well as a need for specific regional awareness and attention in regions where this relationship is strongest,” said study lead author Dr. Vivian Lyons as quoted by SciTechDaily.

The study has been published in the journal JAMA Network Open.

In this study, &nbsp;the researchers made use of the publicly available data from Gun Violence Archive. They analysed more than 16,000 incidents of gun violence and daily temperatures between 2015 and 2020. The researchers found that 7,973 shootings were attributable to above-average temperature.

US: Scientists find link between spike in gun violence incidents and daily temperature

The residents of the capital city and its neighbouring area experienced a chilly morning as the minimum temperature of the city dropped to 1.4 degrees Celsius, registering the lowest temperature of this season as another spell of cold waves swept across the entire northwest India.&nbsp;

In just two days, the national capital's minimum temperature has dropped by nine degrees. Yesterday, the national capital recorded 4.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday and around 10.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday.&nbsp;

Since 2021, this is the lowest temperature recorded in Delhi in January. The base station of the city, Safdarjung observatory, recorded 1.1 degrees Celsius of minimum temperature on January 1, 2021.&nbsp;

Visibility was low in parts of north India due to dense fog conditions which further delayed various trains. Senior weather official said that the national capital's day temperature will be normal.

"Cold wave conditions in Delhi will prevail during the night and early morning. So, this cold spell cannot be compared with the previous one," he added.&nbsp;

North India may shiver in another intense cold wave from Saturday as temperatures are set to dip -4 degrees Celsius, according to the predictions of a weather expert on Thursday.&nbsp; Founder of Live Weather of India, an online weather platform, Navdeep Dahiya warned that the cold wave will peak at its ‘extreme’ between January 16 and 18, as he tweeted, “Never seen temperature ensemble going this low in a prediction model so far in my career.”

Dahiya said, "Don't know how to put this up but upcoming spell of cold wave in India look really extreme during January 14-19 with peak on 16-18th... Freezing -4°c to +2°c in plains, Wow!"

This winter, India’s north and north-western parts have been facing dense fog and bone-chilling winters, with temperatures dipping to 1.9 degrees Celsius as recorded at Safdarjung weather station of New Delhi this week.

However, the national capital got some respite after a minimum temperature was recorded at 9.3 degrees Celsius in Safdarjung.

Heatwaves increasing in India during monsoon season but related fatalities fall

There has been a steady rise in temperature across Asia in the past few weeks and Japan was no exception. According to the national Meteorological Agency, Japan experienced temperatures above 35 Degree Celsius for six days in a row during June – a phenomenon happening for the first time in the country’s history.

The month of June generally brings rain in Japan but this year, the heatwave has changed everything, and official data stated that in the first week of July, almost 14,000 people had to be hospitalised. As the situation continues to get worse, two Japanese insurance companies have decided to cover the medical expenses for people suffering from the heatwave in the country.

&nbsp;Sompo Holdings and Sumitomo Life Insurance have officially decided to include heatwave cover in their insurances, and it will be covering both hospitalisation and other costs incurred.

"These policies are not meant to be profitable, but they could be good ‘door openers’ to tap into clients that don’t have much insurance or are curious about it,” Intelligence analyst Steven Lam told Bloomberg. "If the whole claims experience is good, that might lead into other sales opportunities.”

The policies have become quite popular among the Japanese consumers as the Sumitomo Life package found 6900 buyers on June 29, according to Bloomberg. On the other hand, Yomiuri Shimbun has reported selling the insurance cover to around 400 people every day in July.

The other feature of the insurance policies that made it popular among the people was the lack of an age cap. While the initial plan was to include just senior citizens in the coverage, the companies decided to not include any age restrictions.

Temperatures reached 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42 degrees Celsius) in northwest Kansas by Monday, said Drew Lerner, president of World Weather Inc. This weekend, parts of western Kansas and the Texas panhandle will near 110 degrees, though stronger winds and lower humidity levels will help minimize cattle deaths, he said.

Yellow alert issued as Northern India continues to blaze under heatwave, rising temperature

Climate change has made the record breaking heat waves in India and Pakistan over 100 times more likely, and also increased the chances that such events will occur more frequently in the future, according to a study by the UK Met Office.

The analysis released on Wednesday means extreme temperature events once expected every three centuries are now likely to happen every three years.

The study estimated the chances of exceeding the record temperature witnessed in April and May in 2010, which saw the highest combined average April and May temperature since 1900.

The attribution study, which determines the influence of climate change on a particular weather event, shows that the natural probability of a heat wave exceeding the average temperature in 2010 was once in 312 years.

However, in the current climate scenario that accounts for climate change, the probabilities increase to once in every 3.1 years.

The scientists estimated that by the end of the century, the probability of heat wave will increase to once every 1.15 years.

"With temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in recent days, it is clear the current heat wave is an extreme weather event affecting communities and livelihoods," Professor Peter Stott, Met Office Science Fellow in Climate Attribution, said in a statement.

Although a new record is thought likely, climate scientists will have to wait until after the end of the month, when all the temperature records for the April-May period have been collated to see whether the current heat wave will exceed the levels experienced in 2010.

"Spells of heat have always been a feature of the region's pre-monsoon climate during April and May," said Nikos Christidis, who produced the study.

"Our study shows that climate change is driving the heat intensity of these spells making record-breaking temperatures 100 times more likely. By the end of the century increasing climate change is likely to drive temperatures of these values on average every year, Christidis said.

The scientists adopted the peer-reviewed risk-based methodology that infers probabilities of extreme events with and without the effect of human influence from large multi-model ensembles of climate model simulations.

They noted that extreme pre-monsoon heatwave has eased a little after peak temperatures reached 51 degrees Celsius in Pakistan on Sunday.

"However, the heat looks likely to build again from mid-week, peaking later in the week or into the weekend, with maximum temperatures again likely to reach 50 degrees Celsius in some spots, with continued very high overnight temperatures," said Paul Hutcheon, of the UK Met Office's Global Guidance Unit.

"Through the weekend temperatures are likely to lower again closer to average. There is also a continued enhanced risk of fires (largely from planned agricultural burning) in the region which would further add to the poor air quality. Some strong winds will lift dust plumes at times too, Hutcheon added.&nbsp;

Generally, the temperatures start to fall towards of the end of summer but the Dumont d'Urville station on Antarctica registered record temperatures for March with 4.9C (40.82F) – a time when the normal temperatures were already supposed to be sub-zero.

Antarctica experiences massive heat wave, hits record high temperatures

A latest study has revealed that higher temperatures increase the number of people suffering from mental health emergencies. Published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, the study states that during the hot summer days, US adults were at an increased risk of visiting emergency rooms for mental health crises. This includes substance use, anxiety, stress, and much more.

An average rise of 8 per cent was seen in emergency hospital visits on days when the temperature was in the top 5 per cent of the ones recorded. The impact can be seen on all types of mental health conditions, including stress, mood and anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, self-harm, and substance use disorders.&nbsp;

Study lead author Dr Amruta Nori-Sarma, assistant professor of environmental health at BUSPH, in a report by Science Daily said, "Emergency department visits represent some of the costliest interactions within the healthcare system."&nbsp;
