According to the weather department, the temperature in New Delhi will start falling from Friday (Dec 8). The capital city's maximum temperature was 25.8 degrees Celsius, which was a notch above the normal temperature of the season, against 26.4 degrees on Wednesday. The day also remained foggy on Thursday in Delhi. 
 
The pollution level increased as foggy conditions and low wind speed obstructed ventilation. As per the Air Quality Early Warning System, the AQI is likely to remain 'very poor' on Friday (Dec 8), although slight improvement is likely to take place on Saturday (Dec 9). 
 
According to the forecast, the air quality may remain 'poor' to 'very poor' next week. As per the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology's Decision Support System, 27 per cent of PM2.5 has been attributed to other sources, 15 per cent to transport and 5 per cent to industries which are located in and around Delhi. 
 
On Thursday, both PM2.5 and PM10 levels increased in the air. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, PM2.5 hovered nearly 135.8 micrograms per cubic metre at 6 pm (local time) in comparison to 110.8 a day earlier. 
 
As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the national capital is likely to receive no rain till December 11. Last week, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that Grap-3 has been lifted in the capital city but the government has been making efforts to ensure that Grap-1 and 2 are strictly implemented.

The heatwave in the country was making news already, but it drew greater global gaze after singer Taylor Swift had to cancel one of her concerts in Rio de Janeiro because a fan died before a show. The show was slated to take place on Saturday last week.

Organisers of the show have been quoted in media report as saying that Ana Clara Benevides Machado (23) was at the stadium when she sought help. She was taken to hospital but died an hour later.

It was found that 98 per cent of the world population was exposed to high-temperatures which were made at least twice more likely by carbon dioxide emissions.

"Virtually no one on Earth escaped the influence of global warming during the past three months," said Andrew Pershing, Climate Central's vice president for science.

"In every country we could analyse, including the southern hemisphere, where this is the coolest time of year, we saw temperatures that would be difficult - and in some cases nearly impossible - without human-caused climate change," he said.

They found that extreme heat was part of Antarctica's natural variability. However, the warming climate did have the same effect. According to the study published in the peer-reviewed journal Geophysical Research Letters, winds usually blow from west to east around Antarctica, helping the continent to isolate from warmer regions farther north and allowing it to stay cold. However, like the heatwaves in the United States, the winds curled, enabling warm air from southern Australia to move to East Antarctica in only four days. Furthermore, the northern winds brought a lot of moisture, bringing snow, rain and melting on the eastern coast of the ice sheet. During the same time, Antarctica also experienced the lowest sea ice on record. However, the team suggested it was not due to the influence of the heatwave. The study found that the big swings in weather are not unusual in the polar regions. The research team analysed data from the global weather station and found the highest temperature changes from average usually occur in high latitudes. European countries or the United States never experience such anomalous heat waves. As we go higher in the atmosphere, the air gets cooler. However, high latitudes with snow have colder air near the ground and warmer air above it. In such spots, a warm air mass can dive in to replace the cold air and form warm weather. These events usually occur during or around winter. "That's what we saw for the Antarctic heat wave. These events erode that inversion," Blanchard-Wrigglesworth said. As the Mediterranean was scorched by unprecedented heat from Greece to Spain this summer, wildfires have cost Europe an estimated euros 4.1 billion ($4.43 billion) in damages so far this year.

The director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Gavin Schmidt, said that the presence of El Nino over the Pacific could further drive up the temperatures next year.

"The biggest impact of El Niño will actually occur in 2024," Schmidt said.

An Italian town logged a high of 48.8 degrees Celsius. The ongoing heatwave is expected to last for about two weeks in central and southern parts of Italy.

For the second day in a row, the world temperature record&nbsp;was&nbsp;broken on Tuesday (July 4), as data suggested and experts further warned that the warmest days of this year are yet to come, which will eventually mark the warmest days ever recorded.

As per the data collected by US National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), the average global air temperature on Tuesday was 17.18ºC (62.9F), surpassing the record temperature of 17.01ºC which was reached on Monday.

Till the start of this week, the hottest day ever recorded was in 2016 when the last El Nino global weather event had occurred and the global average temperature had reached 16.92ºC.&nbsp;

The UN’s weather body World Meteorological Organisation on Tuesday confirmed the return of El Nino. According to the predictions of experts, combined with the increased heat due to anthropogenic global heating, the climatic conditions would lead to more record-breaking temperatures.

“El Niño hasn’t peaked yet and summer is still in full swing in the northern hemisphere, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the record is broken again in the coming days or weeks,” stated Dr Paulo Ceppi, who is a lecturer in climate science at the Grantham Institute, Imperial College London.

Dr Karsten Haustein,&nbsp;a research fellow in atmospheric radiation at Leipzig University, said, “The coming days will probably see a small downturn, but since the annual global temperature maximum is at the end of July, more days are likely to be warmer than yesterday (given that El Niño is now pretty much in full swing). Chances are that the month of July will be the warmest ever, and with it the hottest month ever … ‘ever’ meaning since the Eemian, which is indeed some 120,000 years ago.”

The Climate Reanalyzer service, which was hosted by the University of Maine’s Climate Change Institute, reported the record-breaking mean temperature. It used the data from the climate forecast system of NCEP to give a time series of daily mean two-metre air temperature, on the basis of readings from air balloon, surface and satellite observations.&nbsp;

July 4 breaks record of previous day, emerges as world’s hottest day on record

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), in its report, said that temperatures have increased across Europe in the last few years and the heatwaves have resulted in 15,700 deaths across the continent in 2022.

The report emphasised that Europe was affected by record-breaking heat waves in the summer and extreme heat was accompanied by dry conditions in some areas. The death toll due to heatwave exceeded 15,000 across the UK, Portugal, France, Spain and Germany.

The WMO report titled “State of the Global Climate in 2022” was released on World Earth Day which is marked on April 22 every year. WMO is the United Nations (UN) agency for climate, water and weather.

In the report, the UN noted that the past eight years were the hottest in record history. It added that one million species are currently facing the risk of extinction as the world's biodiversity is threatened by climate change.

The WMO report further emphasised that increasing greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are causing damaging environmental changes.

"WMO latest State of the Global Climate report shows that the last eight years were the eight warmest on record, and that sea level rise and ocean warming hit new highs. Record levels of greenhouse gases caused 'planetary scale changes on land, in the ocean and in the atmosphere'," stated the UN in a release.

<h2>Glaciers melting at dramatic speed</h2>

Emphasising the melting glaciers, the WMO stated, “Antarctic sea ice fell to its lowest extent on record and the melting of some European glaciers was, literally, off the charts.”

The glaciers of the world lost their thickness by more than 1.3 metres between October 2021 and October 2022, which is much larger compared to the average decrease over the last decade. Since 1970, the cumulative thickness of glaciers lost is around 30 metres.

The report stated that there has been a record increase in sea levels by an average of 4.62 millimetres every year between 2013 and 2022, which is double the speed at which it was increasing between 1993 and 2002.

The UN said that record high temperatures were also recorded in the oceans where almost 90 per cent of the heat, which remains trapped on Earth due to the greenhouse gases, finally ends up.

Glaciers melting at dramatic speed Emphasising the melting glaciers, the WMO stated, “Antarctic sea ice fell to its lowest extent on record and the melting of some European glaciers was, literally, off the charts.” The glaciers of the world lost their thickness by more than 1.3 metres between October 2021 and October 2022, which is much larger compared to the average decrease over the last decade. Since 1970, the cumulative thickness of glaciers lost is around 30 metres. The report stated that there has been a record increase in sea levels by an average of 4.62 millimetres every year between 2013 and 2022, which is double the speed at which it was increasing between 1993 and 2002. The UN said that record high temperatures were also recorded in the oceans where almost 90 per cent of the heat, which remains trapped on Earth due to the greenhouse gases, finally ends up. However, the IMD in its latest tweet predicted a relief in the plains of northwest India including Punjab, J&amp;K and Himachal Pradesh.&nbsp;The Twitter post read, "Latest Satellite and radar observations show the movement of an intense convective cloud mass across Punjab, Haryana, J&amp;K, Himachal Pradesh leading to favourable conditions for light to moderate rainfall with occasional intense spells along with isolated Thunderstorms, lightning."&nbsp;

The weather department on April 18, issued an orange alert in Bihar, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh after&nbsp;recording temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Punjab and Haryana:

Punjab's Bhatinda recorded a maximum temperature of 41 degrees Celsius, while Amritsar and Patiala recorded 36.6 and 41.2 degrees Celsius respectively.&nbsp;

Haryana's Hisar in this sizzling heat reached a maximum temperature of 41.4 degrees.&nbsp;

Delhi:

Hot weather has been persisting over the national capital, with some weather stations recording the maximum temperature at least five degrees Celsius above normal.&nbsp;

However, IMD on Wednesday said that Delhi might see some relief as cloudy weather prevails.&nbsp;

The state's chief minister earlier instructed all schools to avoid student assemblies during day time.&nbsp;

Bihar:

Bihar's capital Patna recorded the maximum temperature at 44.1 degrees Celsius, marking the highest this season. While the Sheikhpura district was the hottest on Tuesday at 44.4 degrees Celsius, followed by 43.2 degrees in Jamui, Nawada and Rhotas.

The IMD on Tuesday issued an orange alert for two days in Patna, Banka, Aurangabad and several other districts. Besides, a yellow warning was also issued for Begusarai, Gaya, Arwal, Bhojpur and Munga.

Amid recording such high temperatures, the Patna District Magistrate Chandra Sekhar Singh in an order issued to schools instructed them to prohibit academic classes, including pre-schools and Anganwadi centres after 10:45 am.&nbsp;

West Bengal:

With recording rising temperatures, Mamta Banerjee, West Bengal's Chief Minister last weekend instructed all educational institutions to remain closed in&nbsp;the next&nbsp;week&nbsp;amid "severe" heatwave conditions. She also said that&nbsp;children have been complaining of headaches and other health issues after coming from school for a few days.&nbsp;

Schools in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district administration will remain shut for three days amid the state's temperature soaring above 37 degrees Celsius and touching 40 degrees in some states, PTI reported.&nbsp;
