Finally! Taylor Swift is bringing her Eras tour to Canada: Check details

Last weekend, in Downtown Seattle, Taylor Swift sang shake it off and her fans delivered. They did shake it off, causing an earthquake, rather a "Swift-quake" of magnitude 2.3.

Gravitas: Taylor swift fans cause earthquake of magnitude 2.3

The Taylor Swift's Eras Tour has been a monumental success but her Seattle concert led to things to a whole new level. Her devoted fans known as 'Swifties' caused an earthquake equivalent to a tremor that measures 2.3 on the Richter scale. This of course rivals the legendary Beast Quake of 2011.

Swifties cause 2.3-magnitude earthquake in Seattle Concert

In a surprising turn of events, Swifties, as the die-hard fans of pop superstar Taylor Swift are called, discovered their seismic powers during a thrilling Eras tour concert at Lumen Field in Seattle. After two consecutive nights of dancing and enthusiastic cheers, something extraordinary happened, reported CTV. Seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach, who was monitoring the region's seismic activity, made an astonishing revelation - the Swifties had caused seismic disturbances equivalent to a 2.3 magnitude earthquake, as per media reports. The news quickly spread, and the phenomenon was soon dubbed the "Swift Quake." But this was not the first time the city of Seattle experienced ground-shaking celebrations. Back in 2011, during a Seattle Seahawks game, fans erupted in jubilation after an impressive touchdown by running back Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch, causing a seismic event known as the "Beast Quake."

Interestingly, Caplan-Auerbach noticed that both the "Beast Quake" and the "Swift Quake" had left similar patterns on the seismometer. The enthusiastic fans had managed to create seismic signatures with their collective energy, proving that passion and excitement have the power to move the very ground beneath our feet.

Eager to explore this extraordinary occurrence further, Caplan-Auerbach compared the seismic data from both nights of the Swift concert. Astonishingly, she found that the duration of the shaking during Taylor Swift's performance was much longer than that of the "Beast Quake." The fans' rhythmic dancing, synchronised with the music, produced a continuous energy flow that reverberated into the ground, resulting in a much stronger seismic impact.

'Swift Quake'

As the news of the "Swift Quake" spread, it sparked curiosity and wonder among both scientists and fans alike. Chloe Melas, a CNN reporter who attended one of Swift's concerts, shared her firsthand experience of the awe-inspiring event. She described the sensation of feeling the ground tremble beneath her feet, an experience unlike anything she had encountered before. Even Taylor Swift herself was amazed by the incredible energy and thanked her Seattle audience for creating such a memorable weekend.

What is Swiftonomics?

Swifties' impact is more than just earth-shaking. It extends to economics too. Recently, it has been noticed by economists that globally famous singers like Swift and Beyonce can have an outsize impact on economics, leading many to believe that the said impact is big enough to sometimes reach levels serious enough for inflation concerns. Fans are willing to pay exorbitant amounts for the chance to see their favourite artists perform live, resulting in significant increases in recreation and culture prices in countries like the United Kingdom.

The ticket sales reach hundreds of millions. Augusta Saraiva, a Bloomberg reporter, introduced the term "Swiftonomics," which sheds light on the present economic dynamics of the live music scene, as revealed through Swift's influence.

Did Swifties cause an earthquake? Taylor Swift's Seattle concerts spark seismic activity

When it comes to Kanye West, the one thing that Taylor Swift can do is laugh. The entire world is aware of the infamous feud between Swift and West, and during her recent gig, the songstress gave the concertgoers a moment to laugh when she started singing the 2017 song ''Why We Can't Have Nice Things'' - the track that Taylor reportedly wrote about her fight with the rapper and forgiving him.

During her latest show at Lumen Field in Seattle, Swift started singing her famous track. However, what made the jam-packed crowd burst into laughter was when Swift started hilariously laughing on the stage.

While performing the diss track, Swift was not able to control her laughter as she said, indirectly hinting at her 14-year-long feud with West, ''And here's to you, cause forgiveness is a nice thing to do.''

It’s official: Taylor Swift has more No. 1 albums than any woman in history

Taylor Swift never ceases to amaze her critics and fans alike. The pop star made another record with Speak Now (Taylor’s version) as she has now become the first living artist in nearly 60 years who has four albums simultaneously in the top 10 Billboard 200 chart. All her albums, Midnights, Lover, Folklore, and Speak Now have joined the top 10 Billboard chart. Her newest album sits pretty at number 1.

Prior to this, the only other artist who achieved this feat was Herb Alpert in 1966. He did it with albums – Going Places, Whipped Cream & Other Delights, South of the Border, and The Lonely Bull. Following Prince’s death in 2016, the star had five albums in the top 10 — The Very Best of Prince, Purple Rain, The Hits/The B-Sides, Ultimate, and 1999.

Meanwhile, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) marked Taylor Swift’s 12th No. 1 album on Billboard’s chart and her third re-recorded and re-released album. The album is a hit and features some of her best works like “Mine,” “Dear John,” “Back to December” and “Ours.”

Taylor Swift released Speak Now (Taylor's Version) on July 7

At the time of releasing the album, Taylor Swift took to social media to announce that it will drop on July 7. She had then captioned the excited post: “It’s here. It’s yours, it’s mine, it’s ours. It’s an album I wrote alone about the whims, fantasies, heartaches, dramas, and tragedies I lived out as a young woman between 18 and 20.”

She continued, “I remember making tracklist after tracklist, obsessing over the right way to tell the story. I had to be ruthless with my choices, and I left behind some songs I am still unfailingly proud of now. Therefore, you have 6 From The Vault tracks! I recorded this album when I was 32 (and still growing up, now) and the memories it brought back filled me with nostalgia and appreciation. For life, for you, for the fact that I get to reclaim my work. Thank you a million times, for the memories that break our fall.”

From Pink to Coldplay, Bruce Springsteen to Drake, and SZA to The Weeknd, stadiums across the United States and beyond are setting the stage for what's poised to be the biggest year for live music on record.

"I have never seen as many artists out at the same time, in the same space," Stacy Merida, a professor at American University who studies the business of music, told AFP.

Madonna -- who in the early 1990s created the contemporary tour as we know it, with elaborate sets and costumes -- was set to embark on a career-spanning tour in mid-July but postponed it due to illness.

The 64-year-old is slated to start her European leg of shows in October and reschedule the North American concerts for later dates.

So it's the 33-year-old Swift who is now within striking distance of the billion-dollar mark, with 106 current dates on her "Eras" tour.

Odds are also favouring Beyonce as she commences the North American leg of her "Renaissance" tour.

If either cross the history-making line, they'd jump past Elton John.

His just-ended "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour, which began in 2018, had grossed more than $910 million as of June 18, a few weeks before his final show in Stockholm on July 8, according to Billboard Boxscore.

John had surpassed the previous record-holder, Ed Sheeran's 2017-2019 "Divide" tour, which nabbed $776 million.

Part of the current boom comes from increased ticket prices: Sheeran charged just under $100 for "Divide," according to tracker Pollstar, but played well over 200 shows.

Tickets for Bey and Tay are averaging out to be more than double that, for basic seats.

Live Nation, which in 2010 merged with Ticketmaster, says it's already sold 100 million tickets for 2023 concerts -- more than it sold for the entire year of 2019.

The company posted $4.4 billion in revenue during this year's second quarter, promoting some 12,500 concerts to 33.5 million fans.

"With most of the world fully re-opened, it's clear that concerts remain a high priority for fans," Live Nation said in its most recent earnings report.

- Ticketing grumbles -

But while demand has soared, it's not without much grumbling over the privileged position of Live Nation and Ticketmaster.

For years, concertgoers have complained of hidden fees, soaring costs, rampant scalpers and limited tickets due to presales.

The issue reignited earlier this year after botched sales for Swift's tour wreaked havoc, prompting a congressional hearing over purported anti-competitive practices and ardent calls for the company to be broken up.

That possibility doesn't appear on the horizon, and ticket prices keep climbing in the meantime -- and fans keep paying.

"The vertical integrated monopoly really has a lot of ripple effects in terms of prices," said Andrew Leff, a music industry veteran and attorney who teaches at the University of Southern California.

"If you're Ticketmaster and you can charge anything you want and you don't have any competition, and a demand for Taylor Swift or Beyonce comes along, that's simple supply-and-demand economics," he told AFP.

"They can charge whatever they want -- which is what they do."

- 'Beyonce blip' -

And according to Leff, the concert boom isn't necessarily seeing its benefits trickle down to smaller acts.

"There's really two music industries," he said. "There's the music industry for the one percent and the music industry for the 99 percent."

"Unless you're playing in front of 500 people or more every night, you're probably not even breaking even."

It's an all too familiar story: Touring doesn't come cheap, and it's a lifeline for artists whose royalties from streaming notoriously make the tiniest of dents.

But with everyone back on the road trying to make up lost revenue from the pandemic years, there's competition for everything from venues to tour buses.

Last fall, the indie artist Santigold was among the first to speak out on the challenges facing performers like her -- and canceled her tour, saying she was "simply unable to make it work," not least due to inflation and competition in a saturated market.

Meanwhile, recent data from research company QuestionPro suggests Swift's tour could generate some $4.6 billion in consumer spending in the United States alone, pumping dollars into local economies including hotels and restaurants.

And Queen Bey's "Renaissance" tour caused a "Beyonce blip" when she performed in Stockholm in May, driving up Sweden's inflation about 0.2 percentage points.

"Beyonce's start of her world tour in Sweden seems to have colored May inflation," said Michael Grahn, chief economist for Sweden at Danske Bank, at the time.

Hot Tour Summer sees Taylor Swift, Beyonce eye $1 billion mark

Taylor Swift is the latest artist to have objects thrown at her during a concert. Swift, who is currently on The Eras Tour, received a few friendship bracelets from fans as she exited backstage at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Saturday. Just that the bracelets were thrown at her.

Swift, seemingly ducked as they were tossed her way from above and her security immediately came in front of the stage urging fans to stop as they tried to catch them.

Right before the bracelets were thrown, Swift could be seen in the video waving at fans shortly after finishing off the show with her hit song 'Karma' from her latest album.

Fans online criticised the moment after it was shared on Twitter. "The security guards were BLOCKING," one user wrote. "They deserve a raise."

"Seriously people need to stop throwing stuff. Idc if it's a friendship bracelet that weighs less than a pound. They act as though Taylor Swift is gonna pick it up off the floor and ask them to be besties on the spot. It's just very disrespectful."

"please stop throwing stuff at the artists," another user wrote. "if you are a real fan in your right mind, your priority is their safety and not get hurt. this should not be normalized."

One wrote, "I just hope that someday this trend of throwing stuff at entertainers don't get them hurt."

Similar incidents faced by other artists

This is not the first time that things have been thrown at an artist during a concert. Harry Styles, Kelsea Ballerini and Ariana Grande have all been hit with items thrown onstage during their performances.

Adele have even given fans an expletive-filled warning about throwing items at her.

"Have you noticed how people are like forgetting f---ing show etiquette at the moment because [they're] throwing s--- on stage? Have you seen them?" Adele said while onstage during her Las Vegas residency.

"I f---ing dare you. Dare you throw something at me and I'll f---ing kill you," the pop star warned.

There has been a lot of conversation about the dangers of objects being thrown at artists in recent months after pop star Bebe Rexha was hit in the face with a phone while performing in June. The singer was hospitalised after the incident.

Days later, she shared photos of her injury on social media showcasing a cut near her eyebrow and a black eye. "I'm good," she assured fans.

"They deserve a raise." "Seriously people need to stop throwing stuff. Idc if it's a friendship bracelet that weighs less than a pound. They act as though Taylor Swift is gonna pick it up off the floor and ask them to be besties on the spot. It's just very disrespectful." "please stop throwing stuff at the artists," another user wrote. "if you are a real fan in your right mind, your priority is their safety and not get hurt. this should not be normalized." One wrote, "I just hope that someday this trend of throwing stuff at entertainers don't get them hurt." Similar incidents faced by other artists This is not the first time that things have been thrown at an artist during a concert. Taylor Swift runs off the stage after facing malfunction during Cincinnati gig. Here's what happened

High-profile music tours are making a comeback in the post-pandemic era, and pop icons like Taylor Swift and Beyonce are no longer just well-known artists and entertainers. These musicians have matured into economic forces with the ability to considerably impact consumer purchasing in the cities where they perform.

Concert economics explained: Can pop stars power inflation?

Music concert ticket prices, particularly for globally known artists like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, have surged to unprecedented levels, catching the attention of economists who are witnessing their impact on inflation, a Reuters report said. Fans are now shelling out enormous amounts of money to attend live music events featuring renowned artists like Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, and Beyoncé, whose impact on national inflation figures was previously overlooked. "People are willing to splurge because they know they will get quality content, plus who knows when or if she'll do another tour after this one," Mario Ihieme, a devoted Beyoncé fan from London, told Reuters.

Fans are willing to pay exorbitant amounts for the chance to see their favourite artists perform live, resulting in significant increases in recreation and culture prices in countries like the United Kingdom.

Did Beyoncé inadvertently cause inflation in Sweden?

Earlier this month it was reported that Beyoncé was single-handedly responsible for inflation in Sweden. When the singer kicked off her world tour in Sweden last month, it created such a frenzy of demand for hotels and restaurant meals that it had a noticeable impact on the country's economic statistics.

However, experts debate the extent to which concert prices can affect overall inflation, considering that entertainment costs represent a smaller portion of consumer spending compared to essential expenses like housing and food.

"I wouldn't solely blame Beyoncé for the high inflation rate, but her performance and the global demand to see her perform in Sweden seemingly added a little to it," economist Michael Grahn told the BBC.

Are music concerts really back after abatement of COVID-19 effect?

Despite the financial strain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, fans are showing their unwavering enthusiasm for live music experiences. The music industry has experienced a significant boost in ticket sales and prices as lockdowns around the globe were lifted, suggesting a robust recovery as people eagerly embrace the opportunity to come together and enjoy unforgettable live experiences post-pandemic.

Surging concert ticket prices spark inflation concerns as fans splurge on Beyoncé and Taylor Swift

Now as high-profile music tours make a comeback in the post-pandemic World pop icons like Taylor Swift and Beyonce are no longer just music or entertainment figures. These music artists have transcended themselves into economic phenomena capable of majorly affecting consumption in the cities they choose to tour take a look.

A little over a week back it was announced that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry organisation Archewell had mutually parted ways with Spotify and ended its contract with the audio streaming app. Now latest reports claim that Taylor Swift had apparently rejected an offer to feature in Markle's podcast which is now defunct.

News reports claim that Markle had personally written to Swift requesting her to feature on the podcast but the singer rejected the offer via a representative, states a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The Sussexs and their multi-million deals

The report also throws light on the relationships the Duke and Duchess have curated in Hollywood since their departure as senior members of the royal family in 2020. The couple since then has established their nonprofit organisation Archewell and signed multi-million dollar deals with Netflix and Spotify the same year.

The first production since their deal with Netflix was the documentary Harry & Meghan which premiered on December 2022.

According to the report, employees felt that the documentary was critical for continuing the relationship with Netflix.

While the documentary did well on the streaming app, their second project, Live to Lead, which debuted weeks later, failed to reach Netflix's top 10. Their children's programme, Pearl, was previously scrapped by the streaming service.

The couple has several projects in the works with the platform, though insiders have told Wall Street Journal that Netflix will likely not renew their deal which expires in 2025.

Things with Spotify also did not turn out the way the streaming service had initially envisioned. While Markle's podcast Archetypes was an immediate hit, with the podcast featuring special guests Serena Williams, Mariah Carey and Mindy Kaling in the first three episodes, the officials were not happy about Prince Harry's non-involvement.

The initial deal with Spotify reportedly included "each of the Sussexes voicing and being directly involved in a podcast."

Despite their success, their work was reportedly not without flaws. People who worked for the couple stated that the couple was not experienced in the podcast space and lacked direction. They also underestimated the amount of work it would take to produce content.

Meanwhile, it is a well-known fact that both Spotify and Netflix had been cutting costs – and content – and sources feel the axe on the Harry and Meghan's deal came for similar reasons. They also feel that the streaming giants felt that the couple had not been producing as much as they had expected.

Did Taylor Swift reject Meghan Markle's offer to feature in her podcast?

Singer Rina Sawayama seemingly took a major dig at Matty Healy while performing at Glastonbury Music Festival in Somerset, England on Saturday (June 24). The 32-year-old reportedly dedicated her song "STFU" to The 1975 frontman.

Before going in on the first verse, she said, "I wrote this because I was sick & tired of these micro-aggressions. This goes out to a white man that watches Ghetto Gaggers & mocks Asian people on a podcast. He also owns my masters! I've had enough!"

Rina then launched into a power-packed and passionate performance.

Here the singer was seemingly referring to Healy's statements on a February episode of The Adam Friedland Show that has since been removed from Apple and Spotify. The episode had Healy and other hosts making racist jokes about rapper Ice Spice, where they mockingly imitated Chinese and Hawaiian accents. Healy also joked about watching "Ghetto Gaggers" pornography.

Pop icon Taylor Swift has revealed her plans for the highly anticipated Eras tour, which will take her to various international destinations in 2024. The singer has confirmed nine shows in the UK, treating fans in Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff, and London to unforgettable concerts, the BBC reported. Swift might also be taking the headline slot at Glastonbury's final night as per reports, a position she unfortunately missed in 2020 due to the pandemic. This left thousands of disappointed fans unable to secure seats.

As per Billboard, the US leg generated a staggering $591 million (£464 million) in estimated ticket revenues.

To take on the journey through time with the icon on her epic Eras Tour, 73,117 fans flocked to the concert on Saturday and helped Swift hit an impressive milestone.

Swift is all set to release "Cruel Summer" as her next single. The 33-year-old initially planned to release the song in 2020. However, it got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The song first featured on her 2019 album Lover.

Talking about the song release at her Pittsburgh concert on Saturday (June 17), Swift said, "So basically, Cruel Summer was on the Lover album. That album came out four years ago. And I just need to let you know something. That song was my pride and joy on that album. That was my favourite song."

She added, "You have conversations before the album comes out and everyone around weighs in on what they think should be singles and I was finally about to have my favourite song become the single off of Lover. I’m not trying to blame the global pandemic that we had but that is something that happened that stopped Cruel Summer from ever being a single."

Talking about the song release at her Pittsburgh concert on Saturday (June 17), Swift said, "So basically, Cruel Summer was on the Lover album. That album came out four years ago. And I just need to let you know something. That song was my pride and joy on that album. That was my favourite song." She added, "You have conversations before the album comes out and everyone around weighs in on what they think should be singles and I was finally about to have my favourite song become the single off of Lover. I’m not trying to blame the global pandemic that we had but that is something that happened that stopped Cruel Summer from ever being a single." Did Diljit Dosanjh and Taylor Swift dine together in Vancouver?

Taylor Swift and Matt Healy's brief romance is reportedly over. The two musicians have called it quits, reported TMZ. The two had never publicly confirmed their relationship but were linked romantically till a few weeks back.

Earlier this year, Taylor Swift ended her 6 year-long relationship with Joe Alwyn. Soon after, Matt Healy was spotted at Swifts Nashville concerts that followed. Since then, the two have spotted together numerous times and seemed inseparable.

The whirlwind romance was clearly not for keeps and sources close to Swift stated that she was not ready to commit and was still adjusting to a life without Joe. The two reportedly were not serious.

Reports state that Swift and Matt Healy parted ways amicably. The two realised that they weren't compatible and decided to part ways.

Last weekend, Matt Healy reportedly kissed a security guard. This stunt was typical of the singer. He had often kissed random concertgoers while performing in the past.

Swift and Healy have known each other since 2014 and have been linked romantically earlier although Healy had refuted the rumours back then and said that it would be “emasculating” to date Taylor Swift.

While Swift is mum about her split, her fans- Swifties- seem to be celebrating. The singer's loyal fan base was never too happy with Healy's closeness to Swift in recent weeks. They have called out Healy's controversial past. His comments have often been racist, Islamophobic, and antisemitic. While the singer has apologised and insisted that he was simply joking, Swifties has never approved of him.

Some of the Swifties took to social media and wrote celebratory messages as the news of the split came to light.
