A gun battle erupted between Pakistan border forces and Afghan Taliban on the 6th of September. Both sides pinned the blame on each other for triggering the firefight which resulted in the shutdown of their busiest trade crossing. In a separate incident on the same day, Pakistan military claimed to have repelled a cross-border raid from Afghanistan by hundreds of Pakistan Taliban militants. Caretaker Pakistani foreign minister, Jalil Abbas Jilani, tried to diffuse the situation by claiming that the Chitral attack was an isolated incident and didn't have the sanction of the Afghan government. On Saturday, seven more terrorists were killed by the security forces in an intense exchange of fire in the Chitral district. Since Taliban's ascension to power in Kabul two years ago, Islamabad and Kabul have had frosty relations. Islamabad has accused Kabul of harboring militants carrying out attacks on Pakistani soil, a charge denied by Afghan Taliban.

There is no end to the nightmare for women in the Taliban's latest clampdown against Afghan women. Female students have been barred from leaving the country to study in the UAE. According to reports the Taliban-led regime stopped close to 60 young Afghan women from travelling to Dubai to pursue higher education.

The Taliban government has imposed a ban on women entering the Band-e-Amir National Park located in Afghanistan's Bamiyan province.

This decision, issued by Afghanistan's acting minister of virtue and vice, Mohammad Khaled Hanafi, has stirred controversy and raised questions about gender equality and freedom of movement in the country.

Reasons cited for the ban

Minister Hanafi justified the ban by citing instances where women allegedly did not adhere to the hijab, a traditional Islamic dress code, while inside the park.

He called upon religious leaders and security agencies to enforce the prohibition until a resolution could be reached, reported the BBC.

It's important to note that Band-e-Amir holds great significance as Afghanistan's first national park, established in 2009.

This breathtaking natural wonder, characterised by a cluster of lakes with unique geological features, attracts numerous tourists, including families, making the ban a significant impediment to many who wish to experience its natural beauty.

Different perspectives on the ban

Minister Hanafi emphasised that visiting the park for sightseeing was not obligatory, as reported by Afghan agency Tolo News. Meanwhile, religious clerics in Bamiyan contended that the women who violated the hijab rules were not local residents but rather visitors from other regions. Sayed Nasrullah Waezi, the head of the Bamiyan Shia Ulema Council, highlighted this distinction.

International and local reactions

Internationally, the ban has garnered attention and condemnation. Former Afghan MP Mariam Solaimankhil expressed her discontent through a poem shared on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, expressing hope for a future return. Fereshta Abbasi from Human Rights Watch criticised the ban, noting that it coincided with Women's Equality Day and viewed it as a blatant disrespect to Afghan women.

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, raised a pertinent question: Why is restricting women from visiting Band-e-Amir necessary to comply with Sharia law and Afghan culture? He pointed out that the Taliban has a history of implementing temporary bans on women's activities, such as their earlier prohibition from attending schools in December 2022.

This ban on visiting Band-e-Amir National Park is just the latest addition to a growing list of restrictions imposed on Afghan women since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021. Notably, it follows recent directives that ordered the closure of hair and beauty salons and barred women from sitting for national university entrance exams.

Reasons cited for the ban Minister Hanafi justified the ban by citing instances where women allegedly did not adhere to the hijab, a traditional Islamic dress code, while inside the park. Also read | Exclusive | Taliban couldn’t silence her: This exiled Afghan journalist is changing lives, one story at a time Different perspectives on the ban Minister Hanafi emphasised that visiting the park for sightseeing was not obligatory, as reported by Afghan agency Tolo News. Meanwhile, religious clerics in Bamiyan contended that the women who violated the hijab rules were not local residents but rather visitors from other regions. Sayed Nasrullah Waezi, the head of the Bamiyan Shia Ulema Council, highlighted this distinction. International and local reactions Internationally, the ban has garnered attention and condemnation. Also watch | What is it like to be a working woman in Afghanistan Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, raised a pertinent question: Why is restricting women from visiting Band-e-Amir necessary to comply with Sharia law and Afghan culture? He pointed out that the Taliban has a history of implementing temporary bans on women's activities, such as their earlier prohibition from attending schools in December 2022. This ban on visiting Band-e-Amir National Park is just the latest addition to a growing list of restrictions imposed on Afghan women since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021. Notably, it follows recent directives that ordered the closure of hair and beauty salons and barred women from sitting for national university entrance exams. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Just two years after the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, humanitarian assistance needs across the country have increased dramatically. Hem Kaur Saroya brings you the report on how insufficient funding is expanding the humanitarian response and putting parts of the afghan population in need of support at risk.

It's been two years since the Taliban took over Afghanistan and nearly twenty years of hard-fought progress in women's rights has been virtually erased. Women in the country have been wholly excluded from education, livelihood and public office. Today, Afghanistan’s women and girls are required to adhere to not only a strict dress code, they are not permitted to step outside their homes. Mohammed Saleh brings you a comprehensive report on the current situation on the ground.

'No invader will be allowed': Taliban celebrate two-year 'conquest' of Kabul

Two years since the Taliban stormed back to power in Afghanistan after 20 years of war against the United States and its allies, life has changed dramatically for many Afghans, particularly women.

Ahead of the August 15 anniversary of the fall of Kabul, four Afghans -- a businesswoman determined to keep her factory open, a farmer relieved by the war's end, a former Taliban fighter proud to serve the new government and a medical student forced to give up her studies -- told AFP how the changes have impacted them.

The entrepreneur working to keep her business afloat

Arezo Osmani was "terrified and sad" when the Taliban returned to power, promising the imposition of a stringent interpretation of Islam that has seen women barred from many avenues for work and education.

"I didn't leave my room for 10 days, I thought that everything was over for me, and that it was the same for all Afghans," said Osmani, 30, who started a company producing reusable sanitary pads in 2021.

"But when I went out and saw that people were still going about their lives, it gave me hope and I told myself that I had to stay here too," she said.

She shuttered her business, which had employed 80 women at its peak, amid the uncertainty that gripped the country in the wake of the Taliban takeover.

But she reopened its doors two months later as it was one of the few remaining places "where women could work".

Under the Taliban, women have been pushed out of most NGO and government jobs. Last month, beauty parlours -- another key source of income for women breadwinners -- were also shut down.

"We slowly adjusted to the conditions, and fortunately, as we are a company and work in the health sector, we were able to continue our work, I feel good now," she said.

But a reduction in NGO activity in the country under Taliban authorities has hit her business hard, she said. She still employs 35 women, but buyers are scarce.

"At the moment, we have no contracts, no buyers... if we are not able to sell the pads, it will be difficult to continue the work, but we are trying to stay on our feet," said the mother-of-two.

Despite the challenges, she is determined to do what she can for her country, its women in particular.

"Afghanistan and our society need people like us who stay," she said.

The farmer trying to make ends meet

Rahatullah Azizi is grateful for the improved security that has come with the end of the fighting. Now, as the 35-year-old tends his small farm in Parwan province, north of Kabul, he can "move around day and night without worries, thank God".

"There's been a lot of change" since August 2021. "Before it was war, now it's calm."

As a result of the armed conflict, around 38,000 civilians were killed and over 70,000 wounded between 2009 and 2020 alone, according to an annual report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

However, the father-of-two is still weighed down by worry.

Afghanistan's economy, already battered by decades of war, has been mired in crisis after billions of dollars in international aid were cut following the Taliban government's takeover.

Economic output has collapsed and nearly 85 percent of the country lives in poverty, according to the latest report from the UN Development Programme. Drought and locusts have also plagued the country's crops.

"People don't buy much of our produce any more," said Azizi, who farms just over one hectare of rented land.

"I used to sell seven kilos of tomatoes (15 pounds) for 200 afghanis ($2), but now I only sell that for 80 afghanis."

He used to earn an income from cereal crops, he said, but no longer.

"I now have just enough to eat, I can't put any money aside," added the farmer, who holds out hope he can send his children to university to get the education he never had.

The Talib fighter-turned-policeman

For 23-year-old Lal Muhammad, the return of the Taliban to power has brought more economic stability.

He joined the group four years ago when membership meant being a rebel fighter regularly away from home.

Now, he is a police officer in the country's second-largest city, Kandahar, and earning a salary of around 12,000 afghanis ($142) per month -- "enough" for his family.

He's happy to have a regular wage, but said he "didn't dream of having cars or making money".

"My dream was to study and serve in the Islamic Emirate government. I'll stick with it till the end," said Muhammad, using the Taliban authorities' name for the government.

"Thank God they're back."

The Taliban movement, birthed in Kandahar in southern Afghanistan, controlled the country from 1996 to 2001.

"We are very happy. We don't have any problems, there is no war and no fighting," he said. "We are serving the Emirate and our people."

The ex-medical student searching for a new future

Hamasah Bawar once envisioned her future in Afghanistan in the medical field. Since the Taliban took over and barred women from universities, she only sees hope outside the country.

"The closure of universities was devastating, not only for me but all my classmates. We are broken and it's the worst thing we could have imagined happening to us, but it happened," said the 20-year-old resident of Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan.

"If a girl is educated, her whole family will be educated, if a family is educated, the whole society will be educated... If we are not educated a whole generation will be left illiterate," said the young woman, who had won an internship at a clinic quickly closed down under the Taliban government.

"Because I want a better future, for my education, I have no other choice but to leave Afghanistan."

Bawar said there was "a big difference" between the previous US-backed government and that of the Taliban, which has not been recognised by the international community.

"There used to be a lot of freedom, today we can't even go to the Blue Mosque (a famed shrine surrounded by gardens) for enjoyment... Most activities are banned for girls and women now."

Bawar's mother is a teacher at a primary school, the level at which girls' education now stops.

"It's not only what I want, all the girls and women of Afghanistan want their freedom back."

UN asks Taliban to reverse its course on treatment of Afghan women

Two years have passed since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, a sad day for many in the country. This period has witnessed significant changes in various aspects of Afghan society, be it governance or economy, or international relations.

The Taliban's takeover prompted a reevaluation of Afghanistan's standing on the global stage, with nations deliberating on diplomatic recognition and their respective approaches to engagement. Regional players, like India, also sought to navigate their positions, considering potential impacts on security dynamics and the broader stability of the South Asian region.

On the second anniversary of the Taliban's seizure of power, the world reflects on the multifaceted changes that have taken place within Afghanistan. While the full extent of these changes continues to unfold, one thing remains certain: the events of these past two years have left an indelible mark on Afghan society, politics, and its position in the global arena.

The fate of female students in Afghanistan's universities hangs in the balance as they await a pivotal decision from Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada.

Afghan women banned from attending universities

The ban on women attending universities, which was enforced in December of the previous year, had triggered international outrage.

This prohibition came on the heels of a prior restriction that prohibited girls from attending school beyond the sixth grade after the Taliban's resurgence in August 2021. Afghanistan is the only country in the world with such comprehensive bans on female education.

Nida Mohammed Nadim, Afghanistan's higher education minister, had justified the university ban by citing concerns over gender mixing and the alleged contradiction of certain subjects with Islamic principles. The directive, originating from Taliban leader Akhundzada in the city of Kandahar, was due to remain in effect "until further notice."

"We feel a burden to other societies," he said adding, "We were useful assets in Afghanistan". He also does not shy away from admitting that, at times, regret gnaws at him for leaving Afghanistan.

"At the bottom of our hearts, we feel we have lost so badly, we lost Afghanistan, we lost our dreams," he confessed.

Balki did his education in India and he was also the deputy chief of mission at the Afghan embassy in New Delhi.

"I was in India for 12 years," he reminisced as his tone softened. "I have done my study in India. I did my diplomatic career in India."

In the subcontinent, he found a sense of belonging, drawing parallels between Delhi and Kabul. The commonalities mostly were able to serve as a balm for his homesickness.

Nation's fall into Taliban's hands

August 15, 2021, marked a sombre turning point for Balkhi and his friends.

"It was as usual... I left my home for university to take classes," he recalled, a sense of normalcy threading through his words.

But the day's events quickly shattered that normalcy, he said. The city's atmosphere shifted dramatically, roads were blocked, and rumours of the Taliban's return circulated.

"I realized that I was mistaken," Balkhi conceded and said that the Taliban's actions contradicted the narrative at the time that they have changed.

The extrajudicial activities in Afghanistan revealed the true face of Taliban 2.0.

Balkhi, whose writings are anti-Talibani, recognised soon enough that there is a threat to his life under the new regime.

He knew he had to leave.

Education is the key

For Balkhi, education was central to Afghanistan's progress.

Having served in the Ministry of Education during a time of security upheaval, he understood the pivotal role schools played in shaping the nation's future.

"Even in remote areas," he said, recalling the days before the Taliban made a comeback, "it was not the case" that girls were prevented from going to school. However, the Taliban's rise led to the closure of hundreds of schools, thwarting the progress he had strived for.

Hope in the face of uncertainty

Despite the dark clouds cast by the Taliban's return, Balkhi is optimistic about Afghanistan's resilience.

"I still believe that the Taliban could not long-last," he asserted, placing faith in the bravery of Afghan women who are resisting.

A cautionary message

Balkhi concluded his conversation with WION with a cautionary message to the world. "Afghanistan will be the unique case," he predicted, "where diplomatic ties will be formed with a terrorist group".

He urged the global community to "act jointly before it is too difficult to compensate". Mirwais Balkhi's journey, marked by hope, captures the intricate layers of a nation in turmoil.

As he navigates his new life on foreign soil, his thoughts often return to the country he still considers home. He yearns for the day when the shadows of despair will recede, and the light of progress will once again illuminate Afghanistan's path.

Mirwais Balkhi, a former Afghan education minister who fled his homeland two years ago in the wake of the Taliban's takeover, now lives in the United States. In the West, he and his friends, who also escaped Afghanistan in 2021, now grapple with depression. "We are all suffering the highest level of depression," Balkhi admitted to WION. His voice carried the weight of shared sorrow. He said that many who left Afghanistan, himself included, sought solace in Western and North American countries. However, he said the new surroundings cannot fully replace the sense of familiarity they left behind. Diplomacy to diaspora Engaging in a candid conversation with WION, Balkhi revealed that now in the West the feeling of "idleness" haunts him and his Afghan friends in exile. Afghanistan: Booksellers suffer as sales dip amid tax hike, Taliban ban on women's education

A day in the life of an Afghan women.

This is what I wished to write about when I started my research.

The idea occurred when planning my day, and at the same time writing a story on United Nations' reaction on the Taliban's increasing atrocities against women in Afghanistan.

I wanted to know and tell the world what a normal day now looks like, almost two years after Taliban's rule began again in 2021.

I reached out to a couple of young women in Afghanistan.

I was reading the UN's continuous commentary on what's going on in this part of the world.

About the horrific diktats and statistics that kept coming out after August 2021.

In September 2021, an order was issued banning girls from attending high school. In December 2022, women get barred from attending universities. On 24 December 2022, they were banned from working with NGOs in Afghanistan.

The assault on women's rights continues even now.

On June 24th this year, all salons across the country were given one month to close.

Now, reportedly the Taliban has banned girls over the age of 10 from attending primary school classes.

Unfortunately, it does not end here. There is an extensive list of other restrictions as well.

Gyms, Parks, cinema halls, fairs and most employment opportunities are out of reach of women.

Even for a few activities where women are allowed to step out of their house, a male figure is supposed to accompany them.

But talking to Aisha made me realise how there's so much more going on beyond numbers and diktats.

How each number had a story behind it.

Aisha tells me that before 2021, she was a person who walked under free skies.

She was a student pursuing law and teaching at a primary school at the same time.

Now, fear has gripped her life and dictates every action she takes.

Aisha had to drop out of her law degree and was banned from teaching at the school.

She has now changed her field to pursue a nursing course, the only one that Taliban has permitted for girls.

From a simple act of clicking a picture, to listening to songs, to even watching television, she cannot do anything with a relaxed mind, she says.

She says that there are certain streets she can't even go to for the fear of getting caught.

Caught for what, one might ask.

Well, for being a woman in Afghanistan, unfortunately.

Barred from undertaking any simple activity that humans like to take up.

At this point one might as well ask: so where are Afghan women and what do they do?

Aisha tells me that she sits at her home all the time on most days.

For a few hours that she goes out, her mother fears if her daughter will even return home or not.

It makes me think of how years of progress of working, raging and fighting for women's rights, is getting washed away with each day that these women spend locked up in their own homes.

I realised that, in a world where going to school, work and even a park has become a dream, Aisha does not have 24 hours.

Her days now belong to Taliban.

But slowly, feeble voices are rising.

Women staged protests against the Taliban's latest decree to ban salons.

Every now and then, when Taliban tries to tighten its grip around women's freedom, few voices do rise up to nothing but reclaim their days back.

Here is hoping that, one day, Aisha will reclaim her days.

And do things she wishes to do, in every 24 hours.

No country for Afghan women: How Taliban took away Aisha's days

It was on August 15, 2021 that the Taliban toppled the government of Ashraf Ghani and took control of Afghanistan. In a single night, the south Asian country was plunged into a whirlwind of unsettling change. Gun-wielding Taliban members stood sentinel at street corners, while women remained locked indoors, quivering with fear.

“That day and now, nothing has changed,” says Zahra Joya, an Afghan journalist at the helm of a news agency Rukhshana Media, who, along with her family, was airlifted out of Afghanistan in the gripping and tumultuous closing phase of the evacuation by the UK government.

Hundreds of Afghans crowd the interior of a US Air Force C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft, as it carries them from Kabul, Afghanistan to Qatar on August 15, 2021. Picture credits: Reuters

Today, Joya is a journalist in exile, deftly steering her news agency from afar. “My colleagues in Afghanistan are all in hiding. They all had to change their names and identities to be able to practice journalism.” Joya told WION.

Her topmost priority lies in the safety of her colleagues at Rukhshana Media.

“Women in Afghanistan are carrying the heavy burden of the Taliban's deeds,” Joya adds.

In her formative years, schooling options for girls were scarce in her village.

Undaunted, Joya embraced a unique path, disguising herself as a boy for almost five years to claim her education.

“Every day, I'd walk for two hours to get to school, and another two hours to return,” she recalls.

“I was fortunate, my parents stood by me. In fact, my father and my uncle were the ones who came up with the idea of dressing me like a boy, and I insisted on being addressed as Mohammad,” she says.

In Joya's school, walls and chairs were absent, replaced by the embrace of trees and the grounding of the earth. But the fervour for learning had kindled within her an ember from the very start.

Joya has been a journalist for almost a decade. Starting from local news, she delved into investigative reporting in Kabul. Originally eyeing a career as a prosecutor, a university friend's suggestion led her to a brief stint at a local newspaper. In a matter of days, her intrigue transformed into an unbreakable bond.

In 2020, when Joya founded her all-women newsroom, she drew inspiration to name it after Rukhshana, a 19-year-old Afghan girl who fled a forced marriage and was stoned to death by the Taliban.

“Rukhshana died because of the Taliban's extremist view. Following her, countless other women lost their lives due to the Taliban and its dogmatic ideology. I named my newsroom 'Rukhshana' to ensure that we remember the woman who lost her life due to the Taliban's extremism and brutality towards women,” Joya explained.

In the year 2022, Joya was named one of Time magazine’s Women of the Year for her reporting on women’s lives in Afghanistan. Angelina Jolie interviewed Joya for Time's Women of the Year feature. She appeared in the magazine alongside profiles of human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, Olympian Allyson Felix, and poet Amanda Gorman.

Zahra Joya being interviewed by Angelina Jolie for Time's Women of the Year feature 2022. Picture credits: YouTube screengrab

While she is grateful and humbled by all the recognition and praise, a thread of profound introspection runs through her.

“When I think about these awards and recognition, it makes me feel the power of a girl, education, and hard work. But everything dulls down in comparison to what is happening on the ground in Afghanistan. When I see girls denied basic fundamental rights, it breaks my heart,” she says.

Zahra Joya, reporting on women's stories in Afghanistan from her asylum-seeking location in London, was honoured with the Changemaker Award by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2022, as part of the Goalkeepers Global Goals Awards.
Through Rukshana Media, Joya envisions a platform that amplifies the voices of Afghan women, those marginalised to silence and excluded from public discourse.

“I wanted to show that women, especially women from an ethnic minority like me, could be active in public life. Our goal is to create conversation around Afghan women. Most of the time in my country, women are so silenced that they do not find opportunities to discuss their problems and worries. The Afghans are tired of their war. I really hope one day my country is a peaceful place for everyone, including outsiders who can enjoy the beauty of my homeland,” she says.

Picture credits: Reuters Today, Joya is a journalist in exile, deftly steering her news agency from afar. Picture credits: YouTube screengrab While she is grateful and humbled by all the recognition and praise, a thread of profound introspection runs through her. Picture credits: X (previously Twitter) Through Rukshana Media, Joya envisions a platform that amplifies the voices of Afghan women, those marginalised to silence and excluded from public discourse. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

They’re hunting down the Taliban for being deficient in faith. They’re eliminating Pakistani Islamists for not being Islamic enough and they aim to establish a caliphate in India. They identify themselves with the historical region of Khorasan, which was once an ancient caliphate. Who are these militants and what do they want? Is this the resurgence of Islamic State, which the West claimed to have decimated several years ago? Footage courtesy: AFP/ANI Watch Game Plan with Shivan Chanana

Pakistan threatens to take military action in Afghanistan if Taliban fail to keep terror groups on leash

Two days back, the world saw the Taliban burn musical instruments worth thousands of dollars in the western Herat province of Afghanistan, calling the art form a major reason for causing “moral corruption".

The torching of musical instruments added to the list of atrocious measures taken by the rulers of Afghanistan in the past few months, as the deafening silence of the world leaders continued to screech the ears of Afghanis waiting with hopeful eyes for a new dawn.

Amid the escalating crackdown by the Taliban, the founder of the country's only music school, Afghanistan National Institute of Music, and ethnomusicologist Dr Ahmad Naser Sarmast said that the Taliban have been carrying out a “genocide” of the music.

“Destroying and burning musical instruments are part of music's genocide carried out by the Taliban and is a crackdown on the musical rights, artistic freedom and cultural rights of the Afghan people by the terror group. They are not just burning the musical instruments, in fact, the people of Afghanistan and musicians have been deprived of all five musical rights as identified by the International Music Council (IMC),” Dr Sarmast said while speaking to WION.

Fleeting happiness, darkening future

The bonfire of musical instruments included a guitar, a harmonium and a tabla along with amplifiers and speakers, as seen in the images posted online.

Speaking about the dying hope of youth in Afghanistan, the ethnomusicologist said, “Afghan children and youth have been deprived by the Taliban of their basic human and music rights to learn music and chase their dreams of becoming a musician and to make a name for themselves through the beauty of music. The only music school in the country, Afghanistan National Institute of Music, which is often called the happiest place in Afghanistan, is shut down though it operates in Portugal.”

Keeping Afghan music alive

Dr Sarmast, who is recognised and respected internationally for his educational work in Afghanistan, has been living in Portugal and running his institute there after surviving a suicide bomb blast in which he lost his hearing ability.

Explaining why it is important to keep Afghan music alive and thriving, the music saviour said, “Music always was an integral part of Afghan culture, social life and identity. In the 20 century, music played a significant role in keeping the Afghans united while promoting important messages of social and political importance at far distances of the country with the help of radio broadcasting and recording industry.”

'Tyrants fear the ability of artists to unify people'

Speaking about why culture comes under the hammer when tyrants take over the seat of power in nations, Dr Sarmast said, “The oppressive regimes and tyrants are afraid of the power and abilities of arts and artists in unifying people and spreading the messages of resistance and unity among the people in their struggle for freedom.”

Expressing his dismay at no united action taken by the music fraternity for reinstating the music rights of Afghanis, he said, “While there is a lot of sympathy from the music community for the total denial of the music rights of the Afghans by the Taliban, until now there has not been a united action taken to demand the restoration of music rights and lifting of the ban on music in Afghanistan.”

Several restrictions have been imposed by the Taliban in Afghanistan in the past two years under their strict interpretation of Islamic law which is being perceived by the world as a denial of basic human rights to the citizens.
