With the winter season approaching, it is estimated that about one in three children in Afghanistan will be affected by crisis-level hunger as the United Kingdom cut down on its aid for the Taliban-ruled country by approximately 60 per cent this year.

As per the latest figures released by the global hunger monitoring system Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), almost eight million children in the war-torn country will step into the new year without sufficient food and will have to live without ample winter clothing in freezing conditions.

The families are worried about the survival of their kids as last year the cold winter claimed the lives of at least 160 people in the country where the temperatures dropped to minus 37 degrees Celsius.

“Our homes are not usable, and we don’t know how we can survive this winter. The winter is approaching and it is too cold in these places. It will be covered with snow for weeks, the ways to travel will be blocked and these areas will be freezing,” the Independent quoted resident Aslam, who is the father of three currently living in a tent, as saying.

“Sometimes we don’t have bread to eat, and we sleep hungry. Seeing my child getting weak day by day and crying for food is devastating,” said Salma, a mother of a seven-month-old infant who had to rush her child to a clinic run by the UK-based humanitarian organisation according to the Independent.

We are afraid that the severe respiratory infections are highly likely due to prolonged exposure to dust storms, enclosed smoky shelters, other sick people, and extremely cold weather, as many families have travelled to Afghanistan in open, overcrowded trucks,” the Independent quotes him as saying.

According to the report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), the Taliban send women to prisons if they have no male relatives to stay with or if the male relatives are considered unsafe.

"The most-reported types of complaints of gender-based violence against women and girls lodged with the de facto police, prosecution units, and courts were murder, including murder perpetrated for reasons of so-called 'honour', rape, causing injury or disability, and depriving a woman of inheritance," the report said.

Why this measure by the Taliban?

Citing the Taliban, the UNAMA report said that women were sent to prisons for their protection “akin to how prisons have been used to accommodate drug addicts and homeless people in Kabul.”

"Some de facto officials reported that to protect survivors, they requested a commitment – in some instances, sworn statements – from the survivor’s male relations that they would not harm the survivor and also invited local traditional elders to witness family members making this guarantee," the report further said.

A fear of authorities

Many survivors of gender-based violence preferred seeking redress through traditional dispute resolution mechanisms because of fear of the de facto authorities, the UNAMA report said.

"The lack of clear delineation of responsibilities among the various de facto institutions on the handling of complaints of gender-based violence against women and girls and referrals between entities creates a gap in accountability for justice actors and makes it difficult for women and girls to know which entity to approach when they have a gender-based violence complaint," it said.

The UNAMA pointed out that an "absence of women personnel (in de facto institutions) and inherent cultural dynamics potentially inadvertently, and by default, discouraged and inhibited survivors from lodging complaints, contributing to survivors’ and/or at-risk women and girls’ lack of trust in the de facto justice system."

"There is no clear distinction by the de facto authorities between complaints of gender-based violence against women and girls of a criminal nature and those of a civil nature," the report further said.

Online abuse targeting politically active women in Afghanistan has significantly increased since the Taliban took over the country in August 2021. According to a report by the Afghan Witness on Monday (Nov 20), amid the increasing restrictions on women under the Taliban rule, social media platforms such as X emerged increasing vital spaces for women to express their views, establish communities, and campaign for their rights.

"Crucially, these platforms have enabled activists and members of civil society to communicate causes to an international audience," the report said. "But these digital spaces are not risk-free: this rise in women's online advocacy is accompanied by an increase in online abuse and harassment which is impacting women's online participation and – even worse – their lives," the report added.

The Afghan Witness collected and analysed more than 78,000 posts that politically targeted women between June 1, 2021 – December 31, 2021, and in the same period in 2022. The project also carried out interviews with Afghan women to gain deeper insight into the nature of the online abuse they experienced and how their lives were being impacted.

What are the findings?

As per the report, there was a 217 per cent increase in posts containing gendered hate speech and abuse terms and the names of prominent Afghan women from June-December 2021 and the same period in 2022.

The report pointed out that the abuse was overwhelmingly sexualised. More than 60 per cent of the posts last year contained sexualised terms used to target Afghan women, with an 11.09% increase in such terms from 2021 to 2022. Women told investigators "how they received direct messages including pornographic content, sexually explicit photos and threats of sexual assault, rape, and death," the report added.

An impact on mental health

Women were also targeted with narratives of prostitution and promiscuity. The abuse was not just sexualised. The report also revealed that politically engaged Afghan women were targeted with religious, political, and ethnic abuse.

"When Afghan women took to the streets to protest for their rights, investigators detected a surge in abuse online, with female protesters and campaigners often the main targets," the report added.

Some of the women targeted said that their online and offline worlds were intertwined, adding they avoided real-life interactions as they feared their physical safety was at risk.

The abuse also impacted mental health, with women saying they felt fear, anxiety, stress, and low self-esteem. Their family relationships were also impacted, with concerns that online abuse could lead to “inter-familial violence”.

Caretaker PM Kakar has alleged that 15 suicide bombings in recent months were carried out by Afghans and that they have also clashed with Pakistani security forces. In an unusually strongly worded statement, Kakar said that there were terrorist havens inside Afghanistan and militants were being facilitated there. After backing Taliban for years, Pakistan now claims 60 pc rise in terror from Afghanistan

Afghanistan's Taliban rulers have rebuked Pakistan over its expulsion of undocumented migrants.

Taliban warns Afghanistan about Pakistan expulsion

Tens of thousands of Afghan refugees who fled the Taliban in 2021 scrambled to leave Pakistan on Tuesday, hours before the end of a deadline after which Islamabad plans to arrest or deport undocumented immigrants, a move that has drawn international criticism and fears of a humanitarian crisis.

Undocumented Afghans being detained in Pakistan, over 300 migrants arrested in Karachi

Pakistan has begun a nationwide crackdown on undocumented immigrants, potentially impacting nearly two million people, particularly Afghan nationals residing in the country.

This decision has led to tens of thousands of Afghan migrants attempting to leave Pakistan, fearing arrest or forced expulsion.

The move comes as Pakistan's Interior Ministry announced that all foreign nationals living in the country without legal status had 28 days to leave voluntarily or face deportation.

November 1 was set as the last day for undocumented immigrants to leave Pakistan.

Targeted measures and growing exodus

In response to this announcement, there has been a surge of Afghan refugees heading towards the border crossings, desperately seeking to repatriate to Afghanistan and evade potential deportation.

This exodus has been particularly notable in Karachi's Sohrab Goth area, one of Pakistan's largest Afghan settlements.

Here, a bus service operator told Reuters that he had increased the frequency of services to cope with the escalating departures.

Prior to this announcement, he operated only one bus per week, but now, the demand has surged, requiring four to five buses per week.

What are the reasons behind the forced exodus

The decision to crack down on undocumented immigrants, particularly Afghan nationals, is multifaceted.

Pakistan has faced an upsurge in terror attacks, with the government linking a significant number of these attacks to Afghan nationals.

The rising number of terrorist incidents prompted the Pakistani government to address the issue. The interior ministry issued the ultimatum for all undocumented migrants to leave voluntarily or face deportation.

Pakistan has reported a total of 24 suicide attacks in the country since the beginning of the year, with 14 of these attacks being attributed to Afghan nationals.

Data from the South Asian Terrorism Portal reveals that the country has experienced 418 terror attacks in the current year, an increase from the previous year's total of 365 attacks.

This rising threat has raised concerns about Pakistan's security.

Additionally, the Pakistani government has accused the Taliban government in Afghanistan of providing safe haven to militant groups responsible for these attacks.

The Pakistani Taliban (TTP), in particular, has been cited as an organization that enjoys the Taliban's support in Afghanistan. This situation has led to strained relations between Pakistan and the Afghan government.

Economic challenges and job displacement

While security concerns have driven the crackdown, Pakistan is also grappling with its most severe economic crisis.

The country is experiencing soaring inflation, with rates reaching as high as 31.4 per cent, leading to a significant increase in the cost of essential goods and food items.

In this context, many Pakistanis believe that Afghan nationals are taking away job opportunities, exacerbating unemployment and economic hardships.

Pakistan hopes that by deporting nearly two million Afghan nationals, it can alleviate unemployment and provide a boost to the country's economy.

This measure is part of Pakistan's broader strategy to address its economic challenges and political objectives, with the deportation of Afghan nationals serving as both a security and economic move.

Some experts also suggest that Pakistan's action aims to exert pressure on the Afghan government in Kabul, seeking to compel it to meet certain demands and take measures to contain the activities of militant groups that pose a threat to Pakistan's security.
