<h2><strong>What prompted this switch?</strong></h2>

<p>According to the Swedish minister for schools, Lotta Edholm, the move has been long overdue, since lawmakers and experts in the country have questioned if their hyper-digitalised approach to education has proven detrimental to children and led to a decline in basic skills.</p>

<p>Edholm, a part of the centre-right coalition government, who took office nearly a year ago has long been critical of this all-out embrace of technology. He announced last month that the government has sought to reverse the national agency for education’s decision to make digital devices mandatory in preschools.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Sweden’s students need more textbooks,” said the Swedish minister back in March. However, he has planned to take one step forward and end digital learning for children under age six, the ministry has told the AP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rapid adoption of digital learning tools also drew concerns from UNESCO which called for an “urgent call for appropriate use of technology in education”. The United Nations agency said that countries should speed up internet connections at schools but warned them to use it in a way that never replaces in-person and teacher-led instruction.</p>

<h2><strong>PIRLS report</strong></h2>

<p>A report by the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS)&nbsp;also highlighted that while Swedish students score above the European average for reading ability, it was the international assessment of fourth-grade reading levels that showed a decline among the country’s children between 2016 and 2021.</p>

<p>While multiple factors have affected this decline including the COVID-19 pandemic and a growing number of immigrant students who don’t speak Swedish as their first language, experts noted, the overuse of screens during school might have caused students to fall behind in core subjects.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“There’s clear scientific evidence that digital tools impair rather than enhance student learning,” Sweden’s Karolinska Institute said in a statement, last month addressing the country’s national digitalisation strategy in education.</p>

<p>It added, “We believe the focus should return to acquiring knowledge through printed textbooks and teacher expertise, rather than acquiring knowledge primarily from freely available digital sources that have not been vetted for accuracy.”</p>

<p>Catarina Branelius, a teacher at Stockholm’s Djurgardsskolan elementary school said that even before the issue went national she would only allow students to use technology for certain parts of the lessons. “I use tablets in math and we are doing some apps, but I don’t use tablets for writing text,” Branelius told AP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Students under age 10 “need time and practice and exercise in handwriting…before you introduce them to write on a tablet,” said the teacher.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Is it just about helping children?</strong></h2>

<p>Liveon Palmer, a third grader and one of Branelius’ students told the news agency, “I like writing more in school, like on paper, because it just feels better, you know.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the issue remains hotly debated, not everyone is convinced that the shift is being made exclusively for the students as criticising the effects of technology is “a popular move with conservative politicians,” said Neil Selwyn, a professor of education at Monash University.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “The Swedish government does have a valid point when saying that there is no evidence for technology improving learning, but I think that’s because there is no straightforward evidence of what works with technology.<br />

<p>EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, speaking to reporters during a meeting in Cadiz, Spain, asserted that Brussels was exerting continuous efforts to secure the release of the 33-year-old individual, reported AFP.</p>

<p>The previous day, Sweden had partially corroborated a report by The New York Times regarding the detention, disclosing that a Swedish citizen in his thirties had been held in Iran since April 2022. However, Borrell provided further details by confirming the detainee's identity and his affiliation with the EU diplomatic service.</p>

<p>Borrell stated, "I would like to address a specific case, if you permit me, the situation of Mr. Floderus. He is a Swedish national who was employed by the European Union and has been unlawfully detained in Iran for the past 500 days." He emphasised that he, along with his team at all levels, the European institutions, and in close coordination with the Swedish authorities, had been actively urging the Iranian authorities to release&nbsp;Floderus.</p>

<p>Iran had announced in July of the previous year that it had apprehended an individual on suspicion of espionage, just two weeks after a Swedish court sentenced an Iranian citizen to life imprisonment for his involvement in the 1988 mass executions of thousands of Iranian regime opponents. A Stockholm court had found Hamid Noury, a former Iranian prison chief, guilty of "aggravated crimes against international law" and "murder."</p>

<p>He added, “The proposal will thus make it punishable to, for example, in public burn a Quran, Bible or Torah.” This also comes after Denmark recently ramped up security following backlash over a spate of Quran burnings in recent months.</p>

<p>Hummelgaard also called Quran burnings a “fundamentally contemptuous and unsympathetic act” that “harms Denmark and its interests”. In line with this, the proposed legislation will be included in chapter 12 of Denmark’s penal code, which covers national security.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Stockholm's foreign minister and a diplomatic source released a statement on Thursday saying that an attacker threw a Molotov cocktail at Sweden's embassy in Beirut following recent incidents involving burnings and desecrations of Islam's holy book Quran.</p>

<p>"The Danish government will therefore explore the possibility of intervening in special situations where, for instance, other countries, cultures, and religions are being insulted, and where this could have significant negative consequences for Denmark, not least with regard to security," he said.</p>

<p>"This must of course be done within the framework of the constitutionally protected freedom of expression and in a manner that does not change the fact that freedom of expression in Denmark has a very broad scope," the Danish foreign ministry said in a statement.</p>

<p>According to the local governor’s office, the attack was carried out by a “mentally disabled” person in the Konak district at 0945 GMT, reported AFP news agency. However, the alleged attacker did not make it to the consulate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement, the governor’s office in Izmir said the Turkish citizen was from the eastern province of Agri and has been apprehended. An investigation into the incident is underway, it said.</p>

<p>A report by the state broadcaster TRT said that the wounded woman, identified as the secretary at the diplomatic mission, was in critical condition. The attack took place outside Sweden’s honorary consulate, according to local media reports.&nbsp;</p>

Shooting attack at Swedish consulate in Izmir seriously injures Turkish staff member: Reports

<p>Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson vowed to introduce new measures to tighten border control as he claimed that the “outsiders” are exploiting the country’s freedom of express laws to stage Quran burning protests and spread “hate messages”.</p>

<p>Addressing the media in Stockholm on Tuesday (August 1), hours after two Iraqi men were allowed to set fire to Islam's holy book outside the Swedish parliament, Kristersson said such acts were “dragging Sweden into international conflicts”.</p>

<p>“As everyone knows, we have a complicated security situation both in and around Sweden,” Kristersson said, reports Politico.</p>

<p>“We are in daily contact with the Swedish intelligence services at the moment. That’s how serious we think the situation is.”</p>

<p>A final decision on stringent border law will be made Thursday, Swedish broadcaster SVT reported.&nbsp;This new law is expected to give police expanded powers to conduct identity checks as well as vehicle and body searches at Sweden's borders.</p>

<h2><strong>Tighter screening at border</strong></h2>

<p>“People with very weak links to Sweden should not be able to come to Sweden to commit crimes,” Kristersson said, adding that electronic border surveillance will also be expanded.</p>

<p>The PM said that Swedish security experts have expressed concerns that such continued protests could trigger serious threats, "from individuals within the violent Islamist milieu."</p>

<p>For that reason, it is "extremely important" to stop those individuals perceived as threats from entering the country, Kristersson said.</p>

<p>Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer, who appeared alongside Kristersson, said, "Border controls are a measure that gives us the conditions to identify people coming into Sweden who could represent a threat to security."</p>

<p>While Stromme ruled out sweeping changes to hate speech laws, Kistersson said that the government was considering changes that would allow police to prevent Quran burnings if they posed a national security threat.</p>

<p>“We are drawn into conflicts in our countries where individuals have a legal right to speak,” Kristersson said.</p>

<p>Condemning the recent anti-Islam statements, Kristersson warned that people were using Sweden as a stage to spread hateful messages. “Not all that is legal to say is appropriate to say,” he said.</p>

<p>Both countries said they were examining ways to legally limit such acts in a bid to de-escalate tensions.</p>

<p>The remarks come in response to a special session called by the Organisation of Islamic Council, representing 57 countries, on Monday where they condemned the burnings as “despicable acts of aggression” and calling on the UN to intervene.</p>

<p>In a 35-point action plan, the organisation called on the UN secretary general to appoint a special rapporteur on combating&nbsp;Islamophobia&nbsp;and urged all governments to fully implement existing laws or adopt new legislation if needed, citing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.</p>

However, the judge said that she was still liable and fined&nbsp;her 1,500 kronor ($144) plus an additional 1,000 kronor to the Swedish fund for victims of crime.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 20-year-old climate activist appeared in court on Monday in the southern Swedish city of Malmo after 11 am (0900 GMT).</p>

<p>According to news agency AFP, as per the charge sheet, Thunberg "took part in a demonstration that disrupted traffic" and "refused to obey police orders to leave the site".</p>

<p>"It's correct that I was at that place on that day, and it's correct that I received an order that I didn't listen to, but I want to deny the crime," Thunberg told the court when asked about the charge against her.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the short trial, the court however found that Thunberg was still liable for her conduct and slapped her with a fine of 1,500 kronor ($144) plus an additional 1,000 kronor to the Swedish fund for the victims of crime.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rally, which was organised by the environmental activist group "Ta tillbaka framtiden" (Reclaim the Future), tried to create an obstruction on the entrance and exit to the Malmo harbour in order to demonstrate against the use of fossil fuel.</p>

<p>"We choose to not be bystanders, and instead physically stop the fossil fuel infrastructure. We are reclaiming the future," Thunberg said in an Instagram post at the time.</p>

<p>Thunberg shot to global fame after starting her "School Strike for the Climate" in front of Sweden's parliament in Stockholm at the age of 15.</p>

<p>She founded the 'Fridays for Future' movement which very soon became a worldwide phenomenon.</p>

<p>In addition to the climate strikes, the 20-year-old activist regularly reprimands world leaders and governments for not taking appropriate measures to tackle climate change.</p>

<p>Six members of the organisation would be appearing in court in Malmo, she said.</p>

<p>"We young people are not going to wait but will do what we can to stop this industry which is burning our lives," she said, explaining the group's plans for continuing civil disobedience.</p>

Reports quoting Momika said that the primary purpose of the refugee was to bring the spotlight on freedom of speech.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A planned protest was organised on the same day when Momika staged another protest in Stockholm. This time, he stomped on and kicked the copy of the Muslim holy book in front of Iraq's embassy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its "strong condemnation and denunciation of the repeated and irresponsible actions of the Swedish authorities by granting some extremists official permits authorizing them to burn and desecrate copies of the Holy Quran."&nbsp;</p>
