<p>The Swedish foreign ministry on Thursday said that the staff in Baghdad's Swedish embassy are "safe" after the building was set on fire by the protesters.</p>

<p>"We are aware of the situation. Our embassy staff (in Iraq) are safe and the ministry is in regular contact with them," stated the ministry, in an email.</p>

<p>The torching of the embassy was condemned by Iraq's foreign ministry which directed the security forces to identify those responsible.</p>

<p>"The Iraqi government has instructed the relevant security services to conduct an urgent investigation and take all necessary measures to uncover the circumstances of the incident and identify the perpetrators," said the ministry in a statement.</p>

US says Erdogan should not link joining EU to Sweden's NATO entry

<p>The southern Swedish city of Malmo, which sits 615 kilometres (about 380 miles) south of Stockholm and across from the Danish capital of Copenhagen, is going to host the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest from May 7 to May 11 next year, the Swedish organisers announced on Friday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 68th edition will be held at the Malmo Arena, the same venue that previously housed the music competition in 2012.</p>

<p>"Malmo is a creative city with a rich cultural life that can provide a music festival for the whole of Europe," said STV director general Hanne Stjarne.</p>

<p>"Malmo was eventually chosen as it met all the criteria," said executive producer Ebba Adielsson at Sweden's public broadcaster SVT.</p>

<p>Sweden’s third-largest city hosted the event in 1992 as well.&nbsp;In May, Sweden won this year’s contest in Liverpool, England, with the power ballad "Tattoo" by Swedish singer Loreen, who also won the 2012 Eurovision.</p>

<p>The host country usually is the winner of the previous year’s event, but 2022 runner-up Britain hosted this year on behalf of the winner, Ukraine.</p>

He added, “This is a threat to the strength of the alliance…is (also) very important for the security of the whole world.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kyiv is also expecting some “positive results or at least some steps towards the positive outcome” from the upcoming summit in Vilnius, said the Ukrainian president. Zelensky also said the “situation with the aggressor, with Russia depends on this,” as Moscow is “counting on the world to show weakness and disunity in the Alliance, and this cannot be allowed.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zelensky has won a pledge of support for Ukraine to join NATO “as soon as the war (with Russia) is over,” from the Czech Republic. Additionally, Slovakia said the question of Kyiv’s membership was “when,” not “if”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In order to induct a new country into the alliance, unanimous approval from members is needed. Turkey and Hungary, both current NATO members, have not yet given their approval for Sweden's bid. The countries have raised individual disputes with both, Stockholm and Brussels.</p>

<p>Turkey has not been happy over the Stockholm police's decision to grant permits for protests in which pages of the Quran were burned outside the Turkish embassy and mosques.</p>

<p>The last such protest took place on the first day of the Eid al-Adha religious holiday recently. The protests drew strong condemnation from across the Muslim world.</p>

<p>Fidan highlighted the incident as an example of Sweden failing to live up to commitments it made when it won Turkey's initial backing for its application in Madrid one year ago.</p>

<p>"Sweden's security system is not able to stop provocations. This is not bringing more strength but more problems to NATO," he said.</p>

<p>"In terms of strategy and security, when we are discussing Sweden's membership of NATO, it's a question of whether it will be a benefit or a burden."</p>

<p>The Swedish government has condemned the Quran burning as "Islamophobic".</p>

<p>However, the government added in a foreign ministry statement that Sweden had a &nbsp;"constitutionally protected right to freedom of assembly, expression and demonstration".</p>

At an extraordinary meeting, Saudi-based organisation of Oslamic cooperation called for collective measures to avoid future Quran burnings. Swedish police had granted Salwan Momika a permit in line with free speech protections. Authorities later said they had opened a probe over agitation against an ethnic group, noting Momika had burnt pages from holy book very close to the mosque. <p>Sweden’s foreign ministry, in a statement, said, “The Swedish Government fully understands that the Islamophobic acts committed by individuals at demonstrations in Sweden can be offensive to Muslims.” It added, “We strongly condemn these acts, which in no way reflect the views of the Swedish government.”</p>

<p>The condemnation comes days after the country’s police granted 37-year-old, Salwan Momika, an Iraqi citizen living in Sweden, a permit to protest outside a Stockholm mosque where he reportedly stomped on the Quran and burned several pages of the holy book.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The move has since drawn international condemnation from several countries which also summoned Swedish ambassadors to protest the incident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Swedish government, on Sunday also reiterated that the country has a “constitutionally protected right to freedom of assembly, expression and demonstration.” The officials also said that they have opened an investigation over “agitation against and ethnic group.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The burning of the Koran, or any other holy text, is an offensive and disrespectful act and a clear provocation. Expressions of racism, xenophobia and related intolerance have no place in Sweden or in Europe,” said the Swedish government.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>OIC calls for ‘urgent application’ of int’l law to prevent religious hatred</strong></h2>

<p>The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a group of 57 states which have a Muslim-majority population, held a meeting at its headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia about the incident which took place on Wednesday in Sweden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We must send constant reminders to the international community regarding the urgent application of international law, which clearly prohibits any advocacy of religious hatred,” said the OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha, on Sunday. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, the OIC has also urged the member states to “take unified and collective measures to prevent the recurrence of incidents of desecration of copies of the” Quran, said the statement released following the “extraordinary” meeting. The incident has also sparked protests in Baghdad in front of the Swedish Embassy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This also comes amid Turkey blocking Sweden’s NATO bid and months after Ankara suspended talks with Stockholm after a Danish right wing politician burned a copy of the Quran near the Turkish embassy in the Swedish capital, earlier this year.&nbsp;</p>
