Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has called for a meeting with the head of the armed forces and the police to curb a surge in gang killings.&nbsp;

"We will hunt the gangs down and we will defeat them," Kristersson promised during a televised address on Thursday evening. The meeting is to be held on Friday.

The statement comes after bloody 12 hours that saw two men being shot dead in Stockholm&nbsp;and a 25-year-old woman losing her life in a home blast in a village north of the capital.

So far this month, 12 people have been killed in gang violence - the highest number since December 2019, stated Dagens Nyheter newspaper.

Micael Byden, the head of the armed forces, told the Swedish newspaper that he was ready to support police efforts.

It is unclear exactly how the military would get involved, but prior discussions suggest soldiers may take over some enforcement duties to free up officers' time to focus on combatting crime.

According to some critics, the proposed measures are superficial and only address the symptoms of violence rather than its underlying causes.

The recent surge in gang wars has been attributed to a conflict&nbsp;involving the Foxtrot network gang, which split into two rival factions after infighting.

The PM said Sweden had not seen anything like it before and that "no other country in Europe" was experiencing this kind of situation. He stressed that children and innocent bystanders were increasingly being caught up in violence across the country.

More than 60 people died in shootings in Sweden last year - the highest on record - and this year is set to be the same or worse.

A report published by the government&nbsp;in 2021 stated that four in every million inhabitants were dying in shootings each year in Sweden —compared with 1.6 people per million across Europe.

Sakariya Hirsi, head of Kollektiv Sorg, a group linked to Amnesty International, called for more action on child poverty and increased resources for youth clubs, community services and sports centres.

He said there was a lack of "concrete measures" in Mr Kristersson's speech "for those suffering from trauma and loss - especially children - whose grief and pain we as a society must bear and address".

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is set to face another trial towards the end of September, said Malmo's public prosecutor on Friday (September 15), as she has been charged with "resisting arrest" at a July protest.

This is less than two months after she was convicted and fined for the same offence.

The 20-year-old climate activist was fined 1,500 Swedish crowns ($134) by a Swedish court on July 24 for not calling off a rally after being ordered by the police. After the verdict, Thunberg and other activists from 'Reclaim the Future' environmental group, had blocked the road for oil trucks in Malmo harbour and were again forcibly removed by police.

"The protest was unauthorised and led to traffic being blocked. The young woman refused to obey police order to leave the site," said prosector Isabel Ekberg.&nbsp;

"This is therefore a case of refusal to comply."

Hours before the July rally, Thunberg was convicted by a Swedish court and also slapped with a fine for disobeying police orders at a previous rally at the same port on 19 June.&nbsp;

Thunberg admitted to the Malmo district court that she had not abided by the orders from the police to relocate, but also denied criminality, citing the necessity created by the "climate crisis."&nbsp;

According to news agency AFP, as per the charge sheet, Thunberg "took part in a demonstration that disrupted traffic" and "refused to obey police orders to leave the site".

"It's correct that I was at that place on that day, and it's correct that I received an order that I didn't listen to, but I want to deny the crime," Thunberg told the court when asked about the charge against her.&nbsp;

An 8-year-old Swedish boy made an amazing discovery earlier this month while strolling down a beach during a family vacation.

Bruno Tillema ended up discovering a 900-year-old Viking artefact, which he initially mistook as “some weird part from a house.”

“We were spending our summer vacation on Gotland [a Swedish island]," his father, Andreas Tillema, was quoted as saying by Newsweek.

"We had just given him a book about fossils, and because of that he was actively scanning the ground with his eyes," he added.

The father said that Bruno picked it up and kept walking casually until his mother noticed he held something in his hands.

When the mother looked at the artefact, she could not really believe her eyes.

<h2>Archaeologist confirmed discovery</h2>

The curious family later contacted an archaeologist, who later confirmed on a video call that “it was indeed an artefact.”

It looked like an animal's head, adorned with intricate details. Later, they contacted the local administrative authority, Länsstyrelsen, who promptly dispatched a team of three archaeologists to examine the location.&nbsp;

"Both buckles are made of bronze and belong to costumes from the late Iron Age or early Viking Age," Therese Lindström, cultural environment manager at the County Administrative Board in Gotland County, said in a statement.&nbsp;

"Buckles designed as animal heads are usually associated with Gotland women's graves, while ring buckles are found in both men's and women's graves," he added.

It is strongly suspected that the burial site had been previously disturbed, causing the buckles to surface as the soil was ploughed.

The rapid adoption of digital learning tools also drew concerns from UNESCO which called for an “urgent call for appropriate use of technology in education”. The United Nations agency said that countries should speed up internet connections at schools but warned them to use it in a way that never replaces in-person and teacher-led instruction.

<h2>PIRLS report</h2>

A report by the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS)&nbsp;also highlighted that while Swedish students score above the European average for reading ability, it was the international assessment of fourth-grade reading levels that showed a decline among the country’s children between 2016 and 2021.

While multiple factors have affected this decline including the COVID-19 pandemic and a growing number of immigrant students who don’t speak Swedish as their first language, experts noted, the overuse of screens during school might have caused students to fall behind in core subjects.&nbsp;

“There’s clear scientific evidence that digital tools impair rather than enhance student learning,” Sweden’s Karolinska Institute said in a statement, last month addressing the country’s national digitalisation strategy in education.

It added, “We believe the focus should return to acquiring knowledge through printed textbooks and teacher expertise, rather than acquiring knowledge primarily from freely available digital sources that have not been vetted for accuracy.”

Catarina Branelius, a teacher at Stockholm’s Djurgardsskolan elementary school said that even before the issue went national she would only allow students to use technology for certain parts of the lessons. “I use tablets in math and we are doing some apps, but I don’t use tablets for writing text,” Branelius told AP.&nbsp;

Students under age 10 “need time and practice and exercise in handwriting…before you introduce them to write on a tablet,” said the teacher.&nbsp;

Liveon Palmer, a third grader and one of Branelius’ students told the news agency, “I like writing more in school, like on paper, because it just feels better, you know.”&nbsp;

While the issue remains hotly debated, not everyone is convinced that the shift is being made exclusively for the students as criticising the effects of technology is “a popular move with conservative politicians,” said Neil Selwyn, a professor of education at Monash University.&nbsp;

He added, “The Swedish government does have a valid point when saying that there is no evidence for technology improving learning, but I think that’s because there is no straightforward evidence of what works with technology.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, speaking to reporters during a meeting in Cadiz, Spain, asserted that Brussels was exerting continuous efforts to secure the release of the 33-year-old individual, reported AFP.

The previous day, Sweden had partially corroborated a report by The New York Times regarding the detention, disclosing that a Swedish citizen in his thirties had been held in Iran since April 2022. However, Borrell provided further details by confirming the detainee's identity and his affiliation with the EU diplomatic service.

Borrell stated, "I would like to address a specific case, if you permit me, the situation of Mr. Floderus. He is a Swedish national who was employed by the European Union and has been unlawfully detained in Iran for the past 500 days." He emphasised that he, along with his team at all levels, the European institutions, and in close coordination with the Swedish authorities, had been actively urging the Iranian authorities to release&nbsp;Floderus.

"This matter is of utmost importance to us, and we will not cease our efforts until Mr. Floderus is freed."

Iran had announced in July of the previous year that it had apprehended an individual on suspicion of espionage, just two weeks after a Swedish court sentenced an Iranian citizen to life imprisonment for his involvement in the 1988 mass executions of thousands of Iranian regime opponents. A Stockholm court had found Hamid Noury, a former Iranian prison chief, guilty of "aggravated crimes against international law" and "murder."

In a press conference, Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard said that the government will propose legislation that will prohibit the “inappropriate handling of objects with essential religious significance for a religious community.”&nbsp;

He added, “The proposal will thus make it punishable to, for example, in public burn a Quran, Bible or Torah.” This also comes after Denmark recently ramped up security following backlash over a spate of Quran burnings in recent months.

Hummelgaard also called Quran burnings a “fundamentally contemptuous and unsympathetic act” that “harms Denmark and its interests”. In line with this, the proposed legislation will be included in chapter 12 of Denmark’s penal code, which covers national security.&nbsp;

The Danish government has also&nbsp;rejected protests by the opposition parties which said that the proposed legislation would infringe on free speech.

“I fundamentally believe there are more civilised ways to express one’s views than burning things,” said the Danish justice minister. Once passed, the violation of the law would be punishable by fines or up to two years in prison, Hummelgaard said.&nbsp;

Both Sweden and Denmark have ramped up border security after a series of Quran-burning protests and the backlash in early August and while Copenhagen ended the measure, on August 22, Stockholm continues to enforce it.

Denmark government to propose legislation banning Quran burnings: Justice minister

Stockholm's foreign minister and a diplomatic source released a statement on Thursday saying that an attacker threw a Molotov cocktail at Sweden's embassy in Beirut following recent incidents involving burnings and desecrations of Islam's holy book Quran.

"We confirm that there was a Molotov cocktail thrown at the facade of our embassy last evening, which did not explode," a diplomatic source at the embassy said, requesting anonymity as they were not authorised to talk to the media.

The "perpetrator managed to run away", the source added.

Tensions have escalated between Sweden and Muslim countries after several protests involving public desecration of the Quran were reported in the Swedish capital Stockholm.

Lebanon witnessed demonstrations at mosques, while the chief of the pro-Iran Shiite Muslim group Hezbollah called for the Swedish ambassador to be removed from his position.

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said&nbsp;"it was sheer luck that no one was injured" in Wednesday's attack and that staff were safe.

"The incident is currently being investigated," he said in a statement on Thursday, noting that "Lebanese authorities have an obligation under the Vienna Convention to protect diplomatic missions".

Late last month, two Iraqi men had set a copy of the Quran alight outside the Swedish parliament in Stockholm.

Salwan Momika and Sakwan Najem allegedly kicked and stomped on the holy book, then proceeded to set its pages on fire before slamming it shut, just like in a protest outside Stockholm's main mosque in late June. It had sparked outrage and condemnations across West Asia.

The same duo was also involved in a protest outside Iraq's embassy in Stockholm on July 20. On that day, they stomped on the holy book but did not burn it.

Sweden: 100 detained, over 50 injured as riot breaks out over Eritrean festival

A Turkish employee was seriously wounded on Tuesday (August 1) in an armed attack at Sweden’s honorary consulate in the western province of Izmir, Turkey, as per local officials and media reports. The attack comes amid a rise in tensions between the two countries and a day after the most recent Quran-burning incident in Sweden’s capital Stockholm.&nbsp;

<h2>About the attack</h2>

According to the local governor’s office, the attack was carried out by a “mentally disabled” person in the Konak district at 0945 GMT, reported AFP news agency. However, the alleged attacker did not make it to the consulate.&nbsp;

In a statement, the governor’s office in Izmir said the Turkish citizen was from the eastern province of Agri and has been apprehended. An investigation into the incident is underway, it said.

A report by the state broadcaster TRT said that the wounded woman, identified as the secretary at the diplomatic mission, was in critical condition. The attack took place outside Sweden’s honorary consulate, according to local media reports.&nbsp;

Addressing the media in Stockholm on Tuesday (August 1), hours after two Iraqi men were allowed to set fire to Islam's holy book outside the Swedish parliament, Kristersson said such acts were “dragging Sweden into international conflicts”.

“As everyone knows, we have a complicated security situation both in and around Sweden,” Kristersson said, reports Politico.

“We are in daily contact with the Swedish intelligence services at the moment. That’s how serious we think the situation is.”

A final decision on stringent border law will be made Thursday, Swedish broadcaster SVT reported.&nbsp;This new law is expected to give police expanded powers to conduct identity checks as well as vehicle and body searches at Sweden's borders.

“People with very weak links to Sweden should not be able to come to Sweden to commit crimes,” Kristersson said, adding that electronic border surveillance will also be expanded.

The PM said that Swedish security experts have expressed concerns that such continued protests could trigger serious threats, "from individuals within the violent Islamist milieu."

For that reason, it is "extremely important" to stop those individuals perceived as threats from entering the country, Kristersson said.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer, who appeared alongside Kristersson, said, "Border controls are a measure that gives us the conditions to identify people coming into Sweden who could represent a threat to security."

Thunberg admitted to the Malmo district court that she had not abided by the orders from the police to relocate, but also denied criminality, citing the necessity created by the "climate crisis." However, the judge said that she was still liable and fined&nbsp;her 1,500 kronor ($144) plus an additional 1,000 kronor to the Swedish fund for victims of crime.&nbsp;

The 20-year-old climate activist appeared in court on Monday in the southern Swedish city of Malmo after 11 am (0900 GMT).

According to news agency AFP, as per the charge sheet, Thunberg "took part in a demonstration that disrupted traffic" and "refused to obey police orders to leave the site".

"It's correct that I was at that place on that day, and it's correct that I received an order that I didn't listen to, but I want to deny the crime," Thunberg told the court when asked about the charge against her.&nbsp;

<h2>'My actions are justifiable,' says Thunberg</h2>

Thunberg, citing the need created by the "climate crisis", said she had acted out of necessity. &nbsp;

"My actions are justifiable," Thunberg told the court. "I believe that we are in an emergency that threatens life, health and property. Countless people and communities are at risk both in the short term and in the long term."

After the short trial, the court however found that Thunberg was still liable for her conduct and slapped her with a fine of 1,500 kronor ($144) plus an additional 1,000 kronor to the Swedish fund for the victims of crime.&nbsp;

The rally, which was organised by the environmental activist group "Ta tillbaka framtiden" (Reclaim the Future), tried to create an obstruction on the entrance and exit to the Malmo harbour in order to demonstrate against the use of fossil fuel.

"We choose to not be bystanders, and instead physically stop the fossil fuel infrastructure. We are reclaiming the future," Thunberg said in an Instagram post at the time.

Thunberg shot to global fame after starting her "School Strike for the Climate" in front of Sweden's parliament in Stockholm at the age of 15.

She founded the 'Fridays for Future' movement which very soon became a worldwide phenomenon.

In addition to the climate strikes, the 20-year-old activist regularly reprimands world leaders and governments for not taking appropriate measures to tackle climate change.

Environmental activist group 'Reclaim the Future' said that despite the legal pressure, the group will be determined and make efforts to stand up to the fossil fuels industry.

"If the court chooses to see our action as a crime it may do so, but we know we have the right to live and the fossil fuels industry stands in the way of that," group spokesperson Irma Kjellstrom told AFP.

Six members of the organisation would be appearing in court in Malmo, she said.

"We young people are not going to wait but will do what we can to stop this industry which is burning our lives," she said, explaining the group's plans for continuing civil disobedience.

Another major protest happened on Thursday when protesters stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad and set it on fire. Thursday's protest in Baghdad was organised by supporters of religious leader Moqtada Sadr who were angered by the desecration of Quran in Sweden.&nbsp;

Iraq severed its diplomatic ties with Sweden.

A planned protest was organised on the same day when Momika staged another protest in Stockholm. This time, he stomped on and kicked the copy of the Muslim holy book in front of Iraq's embassy.&nbsp;

In a statement, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its "strong condemnation and denunciation of the repeated and irresponsible actions of the Swedish authorities by granting some extremists official permits authorizing them to burn and desecrate copies of the Holy Quran."&nbsp;

Speaking in the same vein, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said that Sweden’s ambassador to Tehran had been summoned. “We strongly condemn the repeated desecration of the Holy Quran and Islamic sanctities in Sweden and hold the Swedish government fully responsible for the consequences of inciting the feelings of Muslims around the world,” Kanani said, reported Dawn news portal.&nbsp;

The Quran burning incident and the following protests have affected diplomatic ties between the Iraq and Sweden. The government ordered the Swedish ambassador to leave the country and called back its envoy from the capital Stockholm.
