"You deserve the significant raise you need and other benefits," he stated, as the crowd cheered along. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called it a "historic" trip.

The Writers Guild of America announced Sunday night that after days of intense negotiations, the major film and television studios and striking writers had reached a tentative agreement. This move cleared the way to end the historic work stoppage that has halted production and rendered much of Hollywood immobile.

The strike was not expanded by Fain at Ford, where significant gaps are still there, which has offered important concessions after the strike started a week ago.

"As we have said for weeks, we're not going to wait around forever for fair contracts at the Big Three," said Fain, in a press briefing.

"We invite and encourage anyone who supports our cause to join us on the picket line, from friends and family all the way up to the president of the United States," stated Fain, as he extended an invitation which will further entangle the White House into a more politically treacherous issue.

"We're not done at Ford," Fain stated. However, "we do recognise that Ford is serious about reaching a deal. At GM and Stellantis, it's a different story," he said.&nbsp;

The strategy of UAW of slowly expanding its action is part of what Fain has called the "stand-up strike" -- an allusion to the landmark "sitdown" strike of UAW held in the 1930s which is aimed at maximising the bargaining leverage of the union because of the risk of additional plants to be taken down.

<h2>UAW adopts aggressive posture</h2>

Under the leadership of Fain, an aggressive posture has been adopted by the UAW in the talks as the companies have been accused of "corporate greed" and lambasting Big Three CEO salaries of more than $20 million each.

Fain has further shelved the convention of UAW of selecting one of the three companies as a strike target and not launching three independent series of talks which have kept the companies off guard.&nbsp;

We are talking about the one-day strike by the workers of a Sogo & Seibu store, who protested the sale of the retail firm to the US Fund Fortress investment group. Some 900 employees at its flagship Tokyo store began striking after talks with management broke down. This was the first strike at a major Japanese department store in the last six decades.

Following months of negotiations between Sogo &amp; Seibu management and the workers’ union, the strike, the first at a major Japanese department store in 61 years, took place amid a severe labour shortage in Japan.

In Japan, where wage and working-condition negotiations are often settled peacefully, strikes are incredibly uncommon.&nbsp;

Seven &amp; i apologised for the strike and assured the workers' union that negotiations would continue. The regular business hours were observed at other Seibu and Sogo department stores.

The takeover deal

The agreement would be finalised on Friday, Seven &amp; i announced, adding that it had asked Fortress to give “maximum consideration of Sogo &amp; Seibu’s business continuation and continuation of employment".&nbsp;

This, however, resulted in a reduction of Sogo &amp; Seibu’s sale value from the initially agreed 250 billion yen to 30 billion yen ($205 million).

As part of the agreement, Seven and i will also let go of the 91.6 billion yen in debt, which is more than half of the total sum it has lent to its unit.

Fortress said in a statement that it will collaborate with Seven &amp; i to help Sogo &amp; Seibu’s management keep its personnel “to the extent possible”.&nbsp;

It stated that it intended to refurbish Sogo &amp; Seibu’s outlets alongside partner Yodobashi for an investment of more than 20 billion yen.

The 11,500 members of the writers' guild walked out May 2, citing an impasse over pay, streaming residuals and other issues such as setting curbs on the use of artificial intelligence.

In its statement following Friday's meeting, the WGA said the AMPTP was willing to increase its offers on a "few writer-specific TV minimums and talk about AI" but did not indicate willingness to engage in screenwriters' issues and other proposals.

"In addition to a comprehensive response from the AMPTP on our proposals in all work areas, we will need to address issues arising from the strike, including a health care benefit extension and additional plan funding, reinstatement of striking writers, and arbitration of disputes arising during the strike," the WGA said.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said before the Friday meeting she was encouraged by the reopening of communication, as the Hollywood writers' and actors' dual strikes negatively impact the economy.

Members of the Screen Actors Guild also went on strike on July 14 after being unable to reach an agreement with the studios on a new three-year contract.

The work stoppage is taking a toll on florists, caterers, costume suppliers and other small businesses that support the entertainment industry.

Ahead of Friday's meeting, the writers and studios groups traded pointed statements.

The WGA's negotiating committee said it was time for the studios to abandon the tactics they used during the previous writers' strike in 2007-08, including allegedly spreading misinformation about the real impact of the strike.

"We challenge the studios and AMPTP to come to the meeting they called for this Friday with a new playbook," the WGA said in an email. "Be willing to make a fair deal and begin to repair the damage your strikes and your business practices have caused the workers in this industry."

The AMPTP called the WGA rhetoric "unfortunate."

"Tomorrow's discussion with the WGA is to determine whether we have a willing bargaining partner," the AMPTP said in a statement, adding "Our only playbook is getting people back to work."

Previously, the group said it had offered writers generous increases in compensation, and put forward improvements in the residuals paid to writers for making their movies and TV shows available on streaming services.

The twin job actions by writers and actors are rippling broadly through the entertainment industry, halting most work on scripted series for the fall TV season as well as film production.

Fox is expected to announce that television's Emmy Awards will be rescheduled to air in January due to the strikes, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing a person familiar with the plans.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros Discovery warned investors Thursday that uncertainty over the dual strikes could delay film releases and impact its ability to produce and deliver content.

Regional governor Serhiy Lysak, taking to the Telegram messaging app, said that the injured were being treated at home. Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov said that this was the third time the SBU security service building was targeted by Russia. The two buildings were empty - the residential building had no one inside it because it just got completed and units were being put up for sale.

"Part of the apartment building was destroyed. It was not even yet in use and there weren't many people there. A few people were trapped but are now out. The security service building is partially destroyed,” he added.

<h2>'Russian missile terror again'</h2>

In the videos shared on social media, smoke was seen billowing from the residential building's top floors, which were&nbsp;badly damaged. President Volodymyr Zelensky said, "Dnipro. Friday evening. A high-rise building and the Security Service of Ukraine's building were hit. Russian missile terror again". 
 
"All necessary services are on site... We keep the situation under control. We will do everything to bring Russia to full punishment for aggression and terror against our people,” he added. 
 
On Friday, Russia said that two Ukrainian missiles were intercepted over its southern Rostov region, which was bordering Ukraine. It stated that the falling debris had wounded at least a dozen people in the city of Taganrog.

As per a Reuters report quoting&nbsp;the union's schedule, employees at the Rugeley facility will walk out on August 3rd and 4th, while those at the Coventry centre will take action on August 4th and 5th.&nbsp;

<h2>Amazon responds to looming strikes</h2>

The strikes are aimed at drawing attention to the concerns over wages and benefits at the company. However, in response to the looming strikes, Amazon defended its stance on employee compensation.&nbsp;

An Amazon spokesperson highlighted the recent pay increases, stating, "In less than a year, our minimum pay has risen by 10 per cent and by more than 37 per cent since 2018."

The company, as per Reuters, asserted that it regularly reviews its pay structure to ensure competitive wages and attractive benefits for its workforce.&nbsp;

The forthcoming strike is not an isolated incident. In June, the GMB trade union reported that Amazon workers in Coventry, who had already conducted several walkouts since January, voted in favour of extending industrial action for an additional six months.&nbsp;

The dispute in England adds to the ongoing debates surrounding workers' rights and corporate responsibility. Also in August, nearly a thousand airport workers at Gatwick Airport in England are set to strike over pay issues.&nbsp;

Around 950 airport workers working at four firms — ASC, Menzies Aviation, GGS and DHL Services — which provide services like baggage handling, ground handling and check-in work, to multiple airlines including the British Airways, EasyJet, Ryanair, Tui, Westjet and Wizz will be on strike starting tomorrow (Friday, July 28th). The first strike will last till Tuesday, August 1st. Following this, they will once again strike from Friday, August 4th to Tuesday, August 8th.

As a result, it has been difficult for the oil industry to import oil, whose prices have been increasing since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Italy’s Health Minister Orazio Schillaci stated that they will activate information line concerns about deaths that are occurring from heat-related illnesses. A man, who was in his 60s, lost his life in a heat-related illness after he fainted in his bakery near the northern city of Padua, and last week, a 44-year-old road worker died in Milan.&nbsp;

“You can protect yourself against the heat in a major way by drinking lots of water, opting for a diet based on vegetables and fresh fruit and avoiding excessive consumption of fatty foods and alcohol,” said Schillaci. “Special attention should be paid to the most fragile, elderly and children," he added.&nbsp;

Stellantis, the carmaker, stated that the situation in the Pomigliano d’Arco plant near Naples was monitored by them after workers were freed early on Tuesday because of too much heat. Workers employed by battery maker Magneti Marelli said that they will hold an eight-hour strike at a plant in Sulmona, in the central Abruzzo region. The unions issued a statement saying that the “asphyxiating heat is putting the lives of workers at risk”.
