Christopher Nolan has expressed his concern for Artificial Intelligence and how badly it's going to impact the world. Nolan's next Oppenheimer is set to hit the theatres soon and recently during the New York screening, the director got candid about artificial intelligence as he compared it with his new thriller, which is based on a biography titled, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

During the panel discussion following a preview screening of the movie in New York, Nolan weighed in on Artificial Intelligence and its terrifying possibilities.

“The rise of companies in the last 15 years bandying words like an algorithm — not knowing what they mean in any kind of meaningful, mathematical sense — these guys don’t know what an algorithm is,” Nolan shared at the screening, per Variety. 
 
The director continued, “People in my business talking about it, they just don’t want to take responsibility for whatever that algorithm does.”

The panel included Nolan, Dr Thom Mason (Los Alamos National Laboratory director), physicists Dr Carlo Rovelli,&nbsp;Dr&nbsp;Kip Thorne, and author Kai Bird, who co-wrote American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.

Addressing the ongoing strike of actors and writers, Nolan said, “With the labour disputes going on in Hollywood right now, a lot of it — when we talk about AI, when we talk about these issues — they’re all ultimately born from the same thing, which is when you innovate with technology, you have to maintain accountability.''

During the discussion, Todd asked the panel, ''Do you think we’ll keep re-examining Oppenheimer? As our understanding of quantum physics continues, as our taming of the atom continues.''

“I hope so,” Nolan stated. “When I talk to the leading researchers in the field of AI right now, for example, they literally refer to this — right now — as their Oppenheimer moment. They’re looking to history to say, ‘What are the responsibilities for scientists developing new technologies that may have unintended consequences?'”

During the London premiere of the movie, the entire cast of the movie walked out, showing solidarity for their fellow actors and the strike.&nbsp;

Explaining the absence of the actors, the director told the audience, "I have to acknowledge the work of our incredible cast, led by Cillian Murphy."&nbsp;

He added, "The list is enormous. Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek, and so many more. And we have to acknowledge, you've seen them here earlier on the red carpet, unfortunately, they're off to write their picket signs for what we believe to be an imminent strike by SAG, joining my guild, one of my guilds, the writers' guild, in the struggle for fair wages for working members of their union, and we support them."

The Hollywood actors' strike kicked off on a sweltering Friday morning in Los Angeles, just over 24 hours after contract talks collapsed with studios.

Several hundred actors swelled the ranks of picketing television and movie writers, who have been pounding the palm tree-lined sidewalks outside Netflix, Warner, Paramount and more for well over two months already.

"No contracts? No actors! No wages? No pages!" went the chants, as organisers from both unions begged strikers to keep hydrated and stay off the roads, where passing cars and trucks blared their horns in support.

"It's a wonderful celebration of workers. This is more than an entertainment industry labor strike -- it's all of labor, all over the country and the world," said "Titanic" star Frances Fisher, 71.

"I have no sets to build without actors," read one slogan.

Both of those guilds re-negotiate their own contracts with studios next year.

"If they need to walk off the job, then we're going to be there to support them too," said Frank, the writer.

In the United Kingdom, the travel plans of thousands of travellers are set to be affected as nearly a thousand airport workers at Gatwick Airport in England strike over pay issues.

On Friday, the trade union Unite announced that almost a thousand airport workers at four firms will strike for a period of eight days, during what is slated to be the busiest summer period since the coronavirus pandemic.

<h2>The looming strike</h2>

Airport workers, including baggage handlers and ground staff, will begin the strike from Friday, July 28th. The first strike will last till Tuesday, August 1st. Following this, they will once again strike from Friday, August 4th to Tuesday, August 8th.

The strike will affect multiple airlines including the British Airways, EasyJet, Ryanair, Tui, Westjet and Wizz, said the union.

<h2>How will it affect travel</h2>

As per Unite, disruptions, delays and cancellations were "inevitable". Right now, the strike is planned but can be avoided.

BBC reports that if it does go ahead, the strike will put pressure on the aviation industry as it deals with potential air traffic control strikes and restricted airspace over Ukraine due to the ongoing Ukraine war.

The union has been pushing for a pay rise for its members for months. In June, Unite had previously called off strike action by security staff at the Heathrow Airport which happens to be Britain's busiest airport, after securing a new deal.

From July 18th, around 100 airport security staff and technicians at the Birmingham Airport are set to walk off.

In Italy, an air traffic strike is planned to start July 15th, which Ryanair Airlines as per BBC said is expected to cause cancellations and disruptions.

UK: Pay issues strike again, 950 ground workers at Gatwick airport set to stage eight-day protest

The Screen Actors Guild, a Los Angeles-based union representing 160,000 Hollywood actors, on Thursday (July 13) called a strike action, initiating the largest shutdown in Hollywood in the past four decades. Following the strike, notable stars Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt left the premiere of Oppenheimer, confirmed its director Christopher Nolan.&nbsp;

Leaders of the British Medical Association (BMA) have called on the government to return to negotiations to resolve the ongoing dispute.

The Guardian reports that Dr Robert Laurenson and Dr Vivek Trivedi, leaders of the BMA, emphasised that the strike could be called off if the UK government followed the example of the Scottish government and dropped their "nonsensical precondition" of not engaging in talks during strikes.

He said above 5 per cent wasn’t realistic - Scotland proved him wrong. He refused to even acknowledge the concept of pay restoration - Scotland proved this is not only possible but essential."

Criticising the inflexible stance taken by the Prime Minister and the Health Secretary&nbsp;Steve Barclay, they stated that talks need to be resumed and argued that the UK government's refusal to engage in dialogue with junior doctors in England, despite strikes being planned, goes against the norms of industrial action.

Expressing their frustration with the government, they said, "The complete inflexibility we see from the UK government today is baffling, frustrating and ultimately destructive for everyone who wants waiting lists to go down and NHS staffing numbers to go up."

Further, they pointed out that the UK government has missed several opportunities to provide a credible offer and bring an end to the industrial action by junior doctors.

They emphasised that while there are differences between the positions of junior doctors and the governments of England and Scotland, "the UK government has far more financial freedom to give doctors what they deserve."

<h2>How the strike will affect patients</h2>

As per Saffron Cordery, Deputy Chief Executive of NHS Providers, the disruption caused by strikes is not only affecting patients but is also eroding the relationship between trust leaders and their staff.

Cordery emphasised the growing risk of delaying treatment for thousands of patients and the strain it places on already overstretched services, making it harder to reduce waiting lists.

As per Barclay the BMA's pay demand of 35 per cent or more is "unreasonable" and inflationary.

"We were in discussions about pay and a range of other measures to improve the working lives of junior doctors until their representatives collapsed the negotiations by announcing further strikes. A pay demand of 35 per cent or more is unreasonable and risks fuelling inflation, which makes everyone poorer."

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, at least three Palestinians have been killed, and over 20 others have sustained injuries during the ongoing raid.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) stated that its objective is to target "terrorist infrastructure in the Jenin area." It emphasised its determination to combat terrorists who exploit the Jenin Camp as a hiding place, labelling it a "terrorist stronghold."

According to Lt Col&nbsp;Richard Hecht, an army spokesperson who spoke to the Associated Press,&nbsp;the military operation commenced shortly after 1 am&nbsp;with an airstrike targeting a building that militants were utilising for planning attacks. The primary objective of the operation, as stated by Hecht, was to eliminate and seize weapons.

"We're not planning to hold ground.&nbsp;We're acting against specific targets," he said.

The Jenin Battalion, a military coalition comprising armed members from Palestinian groups Fatah, Hamas, and Islamic Jihad, declared its resolute opposition to the occupation forces. It pledged to unite across factions and military formations, vowing to confront the Israeli army until its last breath and bullet.

The incident is under investigation by relevant authorities," the airline said in an official statement.

In a similar incident, an IndiGo aircraft was grounded at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi after it experienced a tail strike during its landing on June 11. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) provided details about the incident, stating that the IndiGo A321-252NX (Neo) aircraft, registered as VT-IMG, was operating flight 6E-6183 on the Kolkata-Delhi sector when the tail strike incident took place during landing at Delhi, reported Live Mint.

The statement stated, “On 11th June, IndiGo A321-252NX (Neo) aircraft VT-IMG while operating flight 6E- 6183, sector Kolkata - Delhi was involved in a tail strike while landing at Delhi. The flight was uneventful till approach to land at Delhi. During approach on runway 27, the crew felt that they floated longer than normal and initiated a go-around."

A tail strike occurs when the tail or empennage of an aircraft collides with the ground or any stationary object during take-off or landing, according to Boeing.com.

The airline staff told the stranded couple that the next available flight will be on Monday, April 17. James Digance, aged 75, and his 74-year-old wife Margaret Digance were then given a room to stay in a hotel opposite the airport by EasyJet. 
 
The couple was helped by a kind Polish man in booking new flight tickets. However, the new flight tickets cost them a whopping £1,318 ($1,640) and they had to travel via Frankfurt, Germany to reach Edinburgh on the afternoon of April 15.

EasyJet put us and a number of other passengers up for the night at the Garden Hilton, but this was not without difficulty as the staff at the hotel had to contact easyJet for the vouchers. We had to get back for our granddaughter's birthday party on the 16th so Edy booked us flights from Krakow to Frankfurt and then to Edinburgh from her tablet.''

EasyJet issued an apology for the inconvenience caused and stated that the arrangements were made by them for the couple's return the next day. However, the couple had already made alternative plans. 
 
Digance stated that he was ''fully expecting compensation'' from EasyJet the next morning after their flight was cancelled. However, the company declined their request due to the 'exceptional circumstances' of the lightning strike. The complainant is now demanding EasyJet to cover the cost of the flight which the couple rearranged.

Scottish old couple demands compensation after lightning strikes flight

International Distributions Services, parent of British postal group Royal Mail, said Thursday it had sunk into an annual loss following mass strike action at the former state monopoly.

IDS reported a loss after tax of £873 million ($1.1 billion) in the 12 months to the end of March against a net profit of £612 million in 2021/22.

Revenue dropped five per cent to £12 billion.

"Quality of service has been significantly affected by industrial action and high levels of absence," said Keith Williams, independent non-executive chair at IDS.&nbsp;

"I am sorry that we have not delivered the high standards of service our customers expect. Improving quality of service is our top priority," he added.

Shares in IDS traded down 0.7 per cent in London midday deals.

The results update comes after Royal Mail last week confirmed the upcoming departure of its chief executive.

Simon Thompson will leave at the end of October, following criticism by UK lawmakers on the recent performance at Royal Mail.

The company had been blighted in its last financial year by industrial action, with thousands of workers protesting over wages failing to keep pace with soaring inflation.

Thompson axed 10,000 Royal Mail jobs last year, or about seven per cent of its workforce, blaming the move partly on the strikes.

Royal Mail finally agreed a deal with union bosses in April, which includes a 10-per cent pay rise for staff over three years.

Britain's annual inflation rate remains stubbornly above 10 per cent, prolonging a cost-of-living crisis for millions of people.

Set up more than 500 years ago, Royal Mail has experienced some of its most turbulent times during the past decade, particularly following its controversial privatisation in 2013.

The firm's core letters business has been ravaged as consumers increasingly go online to communicate.

However, it enjoyed booming demand for parcel deliveries during Britain's Covid lockdowns -- and played a vital role delivering test kits and protective clothing in the pandemic.

What is the strike about?

The strike planned by the junior doctors would be the latest one in a wave of walkouts by public sector workers who are demanding pay hikes to offset inflation that has exceeded 10 per cent in the UK. The country is also in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis as prices for basic commodities from food to fuel have significantly increased.&nbsp;

This has left many struggling to pay bills as union wages have fallen in real terms over the past decade, across many sectors including healthcare. The four-day walkout by junior doctors will start at 6:59 am (local time) on Tuesday and will continue till 6:59 am (local time), Saturday.&nbsp;

The junior doctors have demanded a 35 per cent pay raise to “reverse the steep decline” they have faced after years of below-inflation pay rises, if granted it would add 20,000 pounds ($24,842) a year to pay packets. They have also sought “full pay restoration” after witnessing a real-term pay cut of 26 per cent since 2008-9, as per the British Medical Association (BMA).

‘Significant’ impact of these strikes sparks concerns

The plan&nbsp;has since sparked fears among NHS leaders and senior clinicians that the strike will lead to the cancellation and postponement of hundreds of thousands of operations and appointments. This has also led hospital trusts to accelerate the discharge of the fittest patients and cancelled the leave for non-striking doctors, reported the Guardian.&nbsp;

“The impact is going to be so significant that this one is likely to impact patient safety, and that is a huge concern for every health care leader,” Dr Layla McCay, policy director at the NHS Confederation told BBC Radio 4. The walkout also follows a three-day strike last month by doctors early in their career that led to 175,000 appointments and procedures being postponed.

Therefore, in a bid to tempt junior doctors whose pay is 14 pounds ($17) an hour, some hospital trusts have increased the rates for locums with one offering up to 50 per cent over the normal locum rate, reported the Guardian citing a rate card sent to staff and posted online by the BMA.&nbsp;
