Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood is going through a tough time, at the moment. After impressing with his goal-scoring prowess since the restart, Greenwood has witnessed a drop in form while seeing his name dropped from the Manchester United’s Premier League squad for a couple of matches. He has been dropped from the England national side as well.

The 19-year-old has managed to net just two goals so far for Manchester United in the 2020-21 season and there were reports that the Red Devils are growing concerned with Greenwood’s attitude and lifestyle with other reports suggesting the youngster is not getting enough sleep.

Greenwood and Phil Foden hit the front pages following summer escapades while on international duty with England and later, he was also affected by the passing of former Manchester City youngster Jeremy Wisten last month.

Now, it seems like Greenwood has took the help of social media to explain his current condition as he liked an Instagram post urging fans and media to leave him alone as he comes to terms with the passing away of Wisten.

The post reads: “‘Greenwood looks tired’ ‘Greenwood isn’t trying hard enough’ ‘Greenwood needs to fix up’.

“Mason Greenwood has just lost a close friend to suicide and has been endlessly attacked and abused by football fans and the media for months now, leave the kid alone.”

Greenwood ‘liking’ the post suggests he’s keen for fans and the media to lay off him for a while.

Earlier, Crystal Palace forward Andros Townsend urged Greenwood to see a sports psychologist in a bid to get rid of his problems.

“He needs players around him like Harry Maguire, experienced players who have been through it, to put their arm around him,” Townsend said on talkSPORT, per the Daily Mail.

“He needs his manager to stay by his side, which I know Ole probably will.

“He needs family and good friends around him, and the other thing is he needs to see a sports psychologist.

“Somebody who has spoken to other players in his position and who knows what's going on from the outside to help him through it.”

A total of 46 members of Spain’s civil guard have tested positive for COVID-19 after working on traffic control at the Vuelta a Espana cycling race, a source confirmed on Tuesday.

The rescheduled race, which concluded on Sunday in Madrid, took place under strict conditions to prevent riders and spectators from infections and its safety measures were praised by competitors.

The civil guard source said the officers, who had mild symptoms or none at all, were isolating in their residences.

But union Jucil criticised the organisation after 150 officers were allowed to travel across the country back to their homes before learning the results of the test, and called on the interior ministry to ensure the protocol was enforced.

The Vuelta, the final grand tour of the year, was shortened from its usual 21 stages to 18 and its start date switched from August due to the pandemic disrupting the cycling calendar.

The route, which was set to pass through the Netherlands and France, also had to be changed. Slovenian rider Primoz Roglic won the race for a second year in row.

Rohit Sharma continued to cement his legacy as one of the finest white-ball captains after leading Mumbai Indians to their fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy after defeating Delhi Capitals in the final of IPL 2020. Now, Indian captain, Virat Kohli is facing calls to hand over the white-ball leadership duties to Rohit Sharma after yet another disappointing season in the Indian Premier League with Royal Challengers Bangalore.

While Rohit has led Mumbai Indians to five IPL trophies, Kohli has failed to win one thus far, prompting calls for the Hitman to take over the captaincy duties of the national T20 side.

India are set to leave for Australia this week to start a two-week quarantine phase before playing three T20Is, as many ODIs and four Tests.

Following the IPL final, former India batsman Gautam Gambhir and ex-England captain Michael Vaughan said Sharma should take over as the national T20 captain.

"Rohit has won five IPL titles; he is the most successful captain in the history of the tournament," Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo.

"Going forward, it'll be a shame if he doesn't get India's white-ball (one-day) or just T20 captaincy."

Rohit has completely transformed Mumbai Indians since taking over the charge from Australian great Ricky Ponting in 2013, and all five of their trophies have come under his leadership.

Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore had bowed out in the playoffs in IPL 2020, after two bottom-placed finishes in the previous three editions.

Vaughan also backed Sharma to become India's T20 leader.

"Without question, Rohit Sharma should be the Indian T20 captain," he wrote on Twitter, describing him as a "fantastic man manager and leader".

"He knows exactly how to win T20 games. It would also give Virat a chance to take a breather and just be the player."
Vaughan said relieving Kohli of the captaincy was not "an admittance of failure", but rather "what is best for the Indian cricket team".

Meanwhile, Rohit is not part of India’s ODI and T20I sides for Australia as he is still ‘recovering’ from a hamstring injury that saw him miss four IPL matches.

The 33-year-old will be part of the four Tests, however, while Kohli will miss three of them as he is taking paternity leave after the opening match in Adelaide.

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League finished with the Mumbai Indians thrashing the Delhi Capitals by five wickets to clinch their fifth title on Tuesday.

AFP Sport looks at five things we learned from the Twenty20 tournament, which was played behind closed doors in the United Arab Emirates.

- 'Smiles back' -

Delhi coach Ricky Ponting admitted he was "sceptical" about the tournament going ahead during the pandemic, but in the event he said it was "extremely well run".

After a nearly six-month delay as India's coronavirus crisis grew, the 53-day tournament finally got under way in the United Arab Emirates, where it took place in strict bio-secure "bubbles" and at three empty stadiums.

Despite the unusual conditions, Mumbai Indians paceman Jasprit Bumrah said he was happy to be part of a tournament that brought the "smiles back" to cricket fans.

The teams, however, felt the strain of life in a bubble with Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli and England's Eoin Morgan both saying it can be mentally tough on players.

- Tale of two skippers -

Kohli and Rohit Sharma were both appointed IPL captains for their teams in 2013, but eight years down the line their leadership has met with contrasting results.

While Sharma bagged his fifth title for Mumbai Indians, an IPL crown still eludes Kohli's Bangalore.

After finishing bottom of the eight-team table last year, Bangalore made the play-offs this season, an achievement that didn't stop former Kolkata captain Gautam Gambhir calling for Kohli to step down.

But former India opener Virender Sehwag backed Kohli, saying the "captain is only as good as his team".

- 'Universe Boss' at 41 -

Chris Gayle, the ultimate big-hitter, wasn't introduced until midway through the tournament by Kings XI Punjab but he immediately injected life into their faltering campaign with some explosive batting.

The 41-year-old amassed 288 runs in seven innings, including two match-winning fifties. The left-hander went past 1,000 T20 sixes, extending his runaway record, with a heave over mid-wicket off Rajasthan Royals fast bowler Kartik Tyagi, 19.

The flamboyant Gayle, who modestly calls himself "Universe Boss", said his younger team-mates had urged him: "Don't retire."

- Speed guns -

Fast bowlers aren't often the heroes in T20 games in the sub-continent. But the UAE pitches gave the pacemen a chance to shine.

Delhi's Anrich Nortje bowled the fastest ball in IPL history at 97 mph, and fellow South African quick Kagiso Rabada finished as the leading bowler with 30 wickets.

Mumbai's pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult were second and third in the list of wicket-takers, with 52 scalps between them.

"I feel the conditions in the UAE have something for everyone," Rabada said.

- Indian talent -

Bangalore batsman Devdutt Padikkal made an impact as a confident opening partner to Australia's Aaron Finch, one of an an impressive brigade of young Indian players.

The 20-year-old left-hander was named emerging player of 2020 IPL after scoring 473 runs, with captain Virat Kohli praising his "class and efficiency".

Mumbai Indians batsman Ishan Kishan went better with more than 500 runs en route to lifting the trophy at 22 years of age.

Spinners Rahul Chahar (Mumbai), Ravi Bishnoi (Kings XI Punjab) and Kolkata quicks Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi also made their presence felt.

Brett Lee, the former Australia bowler now working as a commentator, said "Indian talent stood out".

Professional golfers are really good and Jon Rahm’s ridiculous shot at Augusta on Tuesday once again proves that. Rahm arguably pulled off one of the greatest shots of all time when it comes to golf as social media went crazy over the viral video.

Over the years, it has been a tradition to skip your shot off the water on No. 16 during practice rounds. While many would simply send their shots sinking into a pond, Rahm turned the pond to his advantage and pulled off a magical stroke, which left everyone stunned with many calling it ‘the greatest golf shots of all time’. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) successfully managed to hold the 13th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in the UAE as the lucrative T20 tournament concluded on Tuesday. Now, it is being reported that the BCCI is looking to hold IPL 2021 in India with a full-fledged mega-auction somewhere around early next year.

Multiple reports have suggested that the Indian cricket board has already informed the franchise to start preparing for the mega auction, which could be held early in 2021.

“The BCCI has told us to be prepared for an auction in a couple of months. Though it is not official, that they have asked us to be ready means they will go ahead as planned. Moreover, with a new team coming in, it makes sense to have an auction now rather than deferring it by a year,” a franchise official told The New Indian Express.

IN PICS | From Kishan's most 6s to Archer's most dots - The 'MOST' of IPL 2020

However, what comes as a big surprise that the board is also looking to include a new franchise for the upcoming edition. The ninth franchise in IPL will be from Ahmedabad with Sardar Patel Stadium (Motera) likely to be their home stadium.

Generally, at mega auctions, franchises are allowed to retain three players with option to use Right To Match (RTM) card on two more players. However, there is no clarity regarding the retention policy yet for the forthcoming mega auctions.

“The retention policy should continue even if a new team comes in because at this stage, it won’t be wise to have all players in the auction pool. Teams will have to compromise on brand value which is built on their star players,” said another franchise official.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals by five wickets in Dubai as the Rohit Sharma-led side lifted their fifth IPL trophy.

Moreover, with a new team coming in, it makes sense to have an auction now rather than deferring it by a year,” a franchise official told The New Indian Express. IN PICS | From Kishan's most 6s to Archer's most dots - The 'MOST' of IPL 2020 However, what comes as a big surprise that the board is also looking to include a new franchise for the upcoming edition.

IPL 2021 to be played with 9 teams, mega auction likely: Reports

An insatiable hunger to succeed, the willingness to put in the extra yards and extensive work on the nitty gritties culminated in an unprecedented fifth IPL title for Mumbai Indians, the players, who are responsible for Delhi Capitals' clinical demolition said on Tuesday.

Opener Quinton de Kock said after the final, "Mumbai have a great set up, so we've been able to move with the gym work and training and stuff. We're reaping the rewards today for it. It's a great feeling."

"I think this year because there were so many questions around Mumbai in general, whether we can win back to back, we put in extra effort. You can see it's paid off. We worked extra hard on the nitty gritties."

If last year's one-run win over Chennai Super Kings was an absolute cliffhanger, Rohit's fluent 68 made it an anti-climax with Mumbai Indians chasing the target of 157 in 18.4 overs.

"It's a great feeling. I've been here 11 years, fifth trophy. No one sees the planning and training, it's pressure playing for a franchise like this," MI veteran Kieron Pollard.

The West Indian swashbuckler added: "The amount of trophies, the amount of work, the amount of players who go on to play for their countries, I think we'll have to say so (that this is the best T20 franchise)."

Elder of the Pandya brothers, Krunal said: "It's the hunger. The way we went about the games, there was always 100 percent. A lot of credit goes to how we prepared. One month before we came, everyone knew their roles."

"Everyone was in good shape, just executing what they were doing in the nets."

Another MI star, Suryakumar Yadav attributed the success to preparation and following the proces.

"Preparations, processes and routine is important. The team just said one thing - we'll take care of this. You go and express yourself," Surykumar concluded

IPL 13: Hunger and working on nitty gritties did it, feel MI players

Unable to bet legally, tens of millions of Indian cricket fans have turned to fantasy games based on the Indian Premier League, which have exploited a loophole to create a billion-dollar industry.

Bolstered by foreign investment, Indian firms have invested heavily in the cash-for-points online games, despite fears that government regulation could put the new industry at risk.

Dream11 -- now the main sponsor for the IPL, which has its final on Tuesday in Dubai -- says it has more than 100 million users for its cricket, football and NBA platforms.

Users pay a fee, often less than 50 US cents, to join a contest that escapes India's ban on gambling because it's considered a game of "skill".

They register a team of favourite players and win points for their performances in IPL games, which can be turned into cash.

The number of fantasy games has mushroomed for this year's IPL, which is being held in the United Arab Emirates as India struggles with the world's second biggest coronavirus outbreak.

Despite the possibility of new regulations, the cash is rolling in, and industry players say the sector could grow to be worth billions of dollars.

- 'Still awaiting big money' -

When software engineer Amit Bhandari started playing Dream11's fantasy cricket two years ago, he never expected to get hooked on its promise of easy money.

"I am still awaiting my big-money day," said the 38-year-old, who called the habit "harmless" even though he hides it from his family, fearing disapproval.

The stigma is familiar to Vinit Godara, co-founder of MyTeam11, a fantasy platform launched in 2016.

In its early years, the company could not get a digital payment platform or a corporate bank account, due to worries about even a hint of betting in India.

Match-fixing scandals regularly hit cricket, and Godara has struggled to explain the difference between fantasy sports and illegal betting to customers.

But this year, Indian fans have seized on fantasy gaming, eager to escape the boredom of lockdown and encouraged by a marketing blitz featuring top stars such as Virat Kohli.

"The IPL has come as a boon for the fantasy gaming industry and we have observed a significant jump in user engagement," Godara told AFP.

Other platforms have also seen a surge in business.

"We are looking at crossing 80 million users by the end of the IPL," Sai Srinivas, co-founder of the Mobile Premier League app, told AFP.

The Games24x7 platform is predicting 900 percent growth in paid users from 2019 to 2020 because of "pent-up demand in the lockdown", co-founder Bhavin Pandya told AFP.

- 'No regulation' -

Foreign investors are eager to join in.

According to IndiaTech.org, a think tank, Indian fantasy platforms have attracted more than $200 million in foreign investment since 2018, including from US hedge funds such as Tiger Global and Chinese online giant Tencent.

Only 20 percent of an estimated 100 million Indian gamers pay to play on fantasy platforms, while the others stick to free games.

The companies see major growth ahead. Cheap phones and data will push the number of internet users in India from 700 million to nearly 975 million by 2025, according to data platform Statista.

But not everyone is happy. Advertising professional Adarsh Sharma said he has yet to take home any cash, despite playing intensely, and he is sceptical about testimonials claiming huge wins.

"I am voicing the (concerns) of thousands of participants," said the 40-year-old.

Other worries dog the industry.

"There is no regulation... and five or six states have banned different forms of online gaming including fantasy sports," Rameesh Kailasam, CEO of IndiaTech.org, told AFP.

For now, India's government appears content to play the game. The sector contributed more than $60 million in taxes in the last tax year.

But the environment remains unpredictable. Fantasy firms fear regulation or even an outright ban.

"We may end up choking another sunrise sector," Kailasam warned.

Dream ticket: fantasy games win big from cricket's IPL

Greg Clarke resigned as chairman of the English Football Association on Tuesday after making a serious of controversial statements to lawmakers that provoked outrage.

Clarke was earlier forced to apologise after he used the word "coloured" when referencing black players as he addressed the Digital, Culture, Media, Sport Committee about diversity issues.

The 63-year-old, who is a vice-president of world governing body FIFA, also attracted criticism for suggesting the lack of professional players in England from a South Asian background was due to "different career interests", comparing the situation to the IT department at the FA.

Clarke also described being gay as a "life choice" when quizzed over the lack of openly gay male players in England and said that young girls were often put off playing the game because they did not want to be hit hard by footballs.

"We can confirm that Greg Clarke has stepped down from his role as our chairman," the FA said in a statement.

"We would like to reaffirm that, as an organisation, we are absolutely committed to doing everything we can to promote diversity, address inequality and tackle all forms of discrimination in the game."

Clarke admitted his statements were unacceptable as the FA aims to become a more diverse organisation.

"My unacceptable words in front of Parliament were a disservice to our game and to those who watch, play, referee and administer it. This has crystallised my resolve to move on," Clarke said in a statement.

"I am deeply saddened that I have offended those diverse communities in football that I and others worked so hard to include."

The FA confirmed Peter McCormick will step into the role as interim chairman with the process of identifying and appointing a new chair to come in due course.

FA chairman Clarke resigns after 'unacceptable' comments

Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy plans to get out of his own way and use hard-earned grit to capture the long-sought Masters title that would complete a career Grand Slam.

The world number five from Northern Ireland said Tuesday he feels relaxed and in control of his game, but realizes he must seize the elusive green jacket in order to join one of golf's most exclusive clubs.

"I've hit it well over the past couple of weeks in practice up here," McIlroy said. "My game feels good.

"I feel as in control as I've been for a while and that adds to that relaxed feeling. You know that it's in there. It's just a matter of going out, just getting out of my own way and just playing with freedom."

A victory would put McIlroy, 31, alongside the only five men to win each major at least once in their careers -- Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen.

"The guy is as complete a player as there is," three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson said of McIlroy. "As well as smart, knowledgeable and works hard. So he'll win and complete the Grand Slam. He's too great a player not to.

"I would be shocked if he wasn't in contention with a great chance on Sunday... winning a Masters will happen. And when it does, I think he's going to win a few."

McIlroy appreciates the praise but knows it will take one of his greatest performances to make the prediction come true.

"Nothing's given in this game," McIlroy said. "I've always felt like I had the game to do well around here. It's just a matter of getting out of my own way and letting it happen.

"You have to go out and earn it. You can't just rely on people saying that you're going to win one. Greg Norman never did. Ernie Els never did. There are a lot of great people that have played this game that have never won a green jacket.

"It's not a foregone conclusion and I know that. I have to go out and earn it and play good golf. Nowadays, with how many great players there are, I need to play my best golf to have a chance."

It's his first Masters since becoming a father, with wife Erica giving birth to daughter Poppy in August and the Augusta National showdown delayed from April due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

- Failure made him gritty -

This will be McIlroy's sixth attempt to win the Masters with the career Slam at stake. He hasn't won a major title since 2013 and he didn't win his first until the 2011 US Open -- his first major after squandering a final-round lead at the Masters with a nightmare Sunday.

"My grit has come from my failures, and I don't have to look any further than this place in 2011," McIlroy said. "I learned a lot from that day. I learned a lot in terms of what I needed to be and didn't need to be.

"I needed to be myself. I didn't need to try to be like anyone else... Failure. You can't be afraid of it. You have to embrace the fact that you are going to fail at things, but you should learn from them.

"I've had a nice little bit of success in this game but I've failed a hell of a lot more than I've succeeded. And that is why I have succeeded, is because I went through those tough patches, and you need to. You need to go through those tough patches to learn. That's where I've got my persistence or grit from."

McIlroy admits he was slow to recover form after the pandemic break ended in June.

"There has been really good stuff in there, but there has been some lackluster stuff, too, lapses of concentration," he said. "They're still handing out trophies at the end of every week, so you may as well try and play as hard as possible for them."

Gritty McIlroy ready to earn Masters win and finish Slam

Brazil must confront a growing injury list that includes star forward Neymar as they resume World Cup qualifying this week, while Argentina are out to extend their perfect start at home to neighbours Paraguay.

Copa America champions Brazil host Venezuela in Sao Paulo on Friday chasing a third win in as many matches after launching their Qatar 2022 campaign with victories over Bolivia and Peru.

However, Brazil coach Tite will be without Neymar after the world's most expensive player injured his thigh while on Champions League duty with Paris Saint-Germain in Turkey last month.

Neymar, 28, bagged a hat-trick in a 4-2 win in Lima last time out to surpass Ronaldo as Brazil's second leading scorer in history. His tally of 64 goals leaves him 13 shy of Pele's record.

Despite his latest setback Neymar will still travel with the squad amid hopes that he may recover in time for the trip to Uruguay on November 17.

However, national team coordinator Juninho Paulista said Tite told PSG sporting director Leonardo that he "would never risk a player's health".

Defender Thiago Silva has tightened up the Chelsea defence since his arrival in England, but the 36-year-old has warned the crowded global fixture list is taking its toll on players.

"You have to keep endlessly reinventing yourself. We're losing players infected by Covid-19, or others who get hurt because we're playing too many matches. We're not machines," he said.

"We saw recent studies showing it's more than likely you get injured after four or five matches come one after another (every three days). It's very worrying for us."

While goalkeeper Alisson Becker and forward Gabriel Jesus return after injury, Brazil will also be without Casemiro, Philippe Coutinho and Fabinho.

Argentina, who began qualifying with narrow wins over Ecuador and Bolivia, are hoping Lionel Messi will be fit for both their games against Paraguay and Peru.

- Messi dealing with ankle knock -

The Barcelona forward is said to be nursing a sore ankle, leaving Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni considering his options if his captain is unavailable.

Paulo Dybala is again missing from the squad along with Sergio Aguero, although Angel Di Maria has been recalled for the first time in over a year.

Lautaro Martinez will likely start up front while super-sub Joaquin Correa could be rewarded for his winning goal in the altitude of La Paz.

Lucas Alario has also forced his way into contention after scoring seven goals for Bayer Leverkusen in his past four Bundesliga appearances.

Uruguay meet Colombia in Barranquilla on Friday attempting to bounce back from last month's 4-2 loss in Ecuador.

Luis Suarez is the joint leading scorer in qualifying with three goals, all of them penalties, carrying over his form from club level with Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde is out with a fractured shin and Maxi Gomez is absent due to a knee problem for Uruguay.

Argentine coach Gustavo Alfaro has vowed to put his "heart and soul into getting Ecuador to Qatar" after they failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

"Right now, Ecuador is more a handful of very good intentions than a (finished) team," Alfaro told FIFA.com.

"As I said before, the challenge is to convert hope into reality. I'm not here to manage a team but rather to win."

"I have to admit that it'll be a disappointment if we're not at the next World Cup," he added, with his team playing away to Bolivia on Thursday.

Last year's Copa America runners-up Peru on Friday play Chile -- the country that won the tournament in 2015 and 2016.

Both nations are looking to breathe life into their qualifying bids in Santiago after collecting just a point from the opening two rounds.

'We're not machines': Injury-hit Brazil, Argentina resume World Cup qualifying

The West Indies cricket squad was rebuked Wednesday for repeatedly breaking Covid-19 isolation rules inside their team hotel in New Zealand, prompting health authorities to revoke their training privileges.

Cricket West Indies chief Johnny Grave said he was "bitterly disappointed" at the breaches, which he said had the potential to jeopardise the entire tour.

"They've let themselves down, let West Indies cricket down and potentially put the tour at risk and the New Zealand population at risk," the Antigua-based administrator told Kiwi reporters in a hastily arranged conference call.

The cricketers are undergoing a mandatory 14-day quarantine in Christchurch, but the health department said they had not abided by strict bio-security protocols requiring the squad to stay in two separate bubbles.

"Members of the team were confirmed to have repeatedly broken managed isolation rules," director-general of health Ashley Bloomfield said in a statement.

"Many of these incidents have been captured on CCTV and have also been reported by staff. The incidents include groups mingling and sharing food."

Bloomfield said the breaches all occurred within the hotel where the team is based during the quarantine period and there was no risk to the general public.

He said a special dispensation allowing the West Indians to train during quarantine had been revoked, adding: "It is a privilege to come here but in return, they have to stick to the rules."

Grave said the training ban was a "huge blow" but he agreed with the move, acknowledging New Zealand had worked hard to contain the coronavirus to a level where domestic life in the country is near-normal.

He was surprised his players had failed to follow the rules, saying they had experienced similar bio-secure bubbles touring England and competing in the Caribbean Premier League.

While such environments were challenging for players, Grave said they were the only way cricket could be played in the current environment.

"I am sympathetic, but at the same time I'm also bitterly disappointed," he said.

Grave said Cricket West Indies was launching an internal investigation and would interview all players to determine what occurred.

The health department said it would provide evidence to the probe and leave it to the governing body to determine if disciplinary action was needed against individual players.

New Zealand Cricket said it supported the health department's position and public safety remained its top priority when hosting overseas teams.

It said the West Indies were in their 12th day of isolation and, if all players were virus-free, they would depart Friday for Queenstown, where they have warm-up matches against New Zealand A.

The first of three Twenty20 international against the Black Caps is scheduled for November 27 at Eden Park, followed by two Tests.

The incidents include groups mingling and sharing food." Bloomfield said the breaches all occurred within the hotel where the team is based during the quarantine period and there was no risk to the general public. He said a special dispensation allowing the West Indians to train during quarantine had been revoked, adding: "It is a privilege to come here but in return, they have to stick to the rules." Grave said the training ban was a "huge blow" but he agreed with the move, acknowledging New Zealand had worked hard to contain the coronavirus to a level where domestic life in the country is near-normal. West Indies break Covid bubble rules in New Zealand

Cricket Australia (CA) is hoping crowd limits at stadiums can be relaxed for India’s blockbuster tour as COVID-19 restrictions ease across the country.

Australia has for weeks recorded just daily single digit new cases, with an outbreak in southern Victoria state quashed by a four-month lockdown.

Caps on stadium crowds remain, however, which could cost CA tens of millions of dollars in revenue.

Victoria is limiting crowds at the 100,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground to 25,000 per day during the Dec. 26 Boxing Day test, the second of the four-match series against India.

Test venues Adelaide Oval and the Sydney Cricket Ground are limited to about half-capacity, while Brisbane’s Gabba is capped at about 70%.

“We’re going to give all priority to safety but we’ll continue to work with the authorities to see if we can’t increase those capacities a bit as we move forward,” CA interim Chief Executive Nick Hockley told Australian radio station SEN on Tuesday.

CA last month reported a A$46 million deficit ($33.48 million) for the year to June 30, and projected a A$120 million dip in projected revenue for the 2020/21 period due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

India’s tour, which kicks off with a one-day international series starting in Sydney on Nov. 27, will provide a vital injection of revenue for CA despite the limited involvement of one of the biggest drawcards in Virat Kohli.

The India skipper will miss the last three tests to return home for the birth of his child.

“I think when the pregnancy was announced it was always on the cards and we have to respect the fact he wants to be there for the birth of his first child,” said Hockley.

The India players and staff will undertake a 14-day quarantine after arriving in Australia and be confined to a biosecure “bubble” during the tour.

They are expected to land in Australia on Thursday but Hockley said travel arrangements for their families had not been settled.

“We were always talking about a very limited number of families and we’re working through it,” said Hockley.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said on Tuesday there could be no "blank cheque" to bail out the English Football League (EFL) despite the financial crisis engulfing clubs.

The top-flight is in negotiations with the EFL over a financial package to ensure no sides go out of business due to the coronavirus pandemic, though an agreement has yet to be reached.

England's lower-league clubs, forced to play their matches behind closed doors, last month rejected an offer from the top-flight of a £50 million ($66 million) rescue package.

EFL chiefs said the bailout, which would have covered clubs in third-tier League One and fourth-tier League Two was insufficient and insisted outfits in the second-tier Championship should also be included in any offer.

"The Premier League has engaged and wants to seek resolution but there can't be a blank cheque or an underwriting of losses," Masters told lawmakers on the House of Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee.

"We believe our proposal is appropriate and goes to the heart of the problem and is in line with government policy on how it deals with other sectors.

"We believe we are stepping up and helping the pyramid of football. We have yet to reach an agreement with Rick (EFL chairman Rick Parry) but I am confident we can do that."

Masters said the Premier League could make money available immediately to ensure clubs "don't suffer distress or get to the point of administration".

"We are huge supporters of the pyramid and understand its importance," he added.

Parry said he hoped a deal could be agreed by the end of the month.

Asked by committee chairman Julian Knight whether that would be the case, Parry replied: "I think now we have a commitment that the Championship is going to be embraced we can move forwards. We sincerely hope so.

"We would very much like to come to a deal with the Premier League."

Masters confirmed the Premier League would be "changing direction" away from the controversial decision to broadcast several games behind an additional paywall.

"We took a decision to move to pay-per-view and now we are reviewing that decision," Masters said.

"We have listened to feedback, we will be changing direction and moving away from it and taking another step that will see us through lockdown, the Christmas period and into January. I can't announce what it is."

Formula One unveiled a 23-race calendar for 2021 on Tuesday, its biggest ever, but the Vietnamese Grand Prix has been dropped.

The season will start in Australia on March 21 and will include the first ever race in Saudi Arabia on November 28 before the season ends a week later in Abu Dhabi.

Vietnam was to hold a street race on April 25 but doubts about the event arose after Nguyen Duc Chung, who was Hanoi's mayor and a major supporter of the event, was arrested on corruption charges in August. In the calendar unveiled on Tuesday, the race slot was left vacant.

F1's 2020 season was heavily disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic but is eventually being run over 17 races, with reigning champion Lewis Hamilton on course to win the title for the seventh time.

Spectators have been barred from most races this year but organisers said they expect fans to return next year.

"The plans for 2021 have involved extensive dialogue with all promoters and their local and national authorities at a time of ongoing fluidity related to the global pandemic," F1 said in a statement.

"As we have said before, we expect fans to return for the 2021 season and for the calendar to look similar to the originally planned 2020 season."

Saudi Arabia said last week it was holding a race for the first time, an announcement that is likely to spark fresh accusations from human rights groups that the kingdom is using high-profile sports events to "wash" its human rights record.

The Netherlands, home to the popular Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, gets a race a year earlier than originally planned with a September 5 slot in the coastal town of Zandvoort. It will be the first Dutch grand prix since 1985.

Vietnam signed up for Formula One hoping the glamour of the sport could reflect the country's economic lift-off and reshape Hanoi's staid image, much as it has done for Singapore which will again host a race next year.

The communist nation inked a 10-year deal with Formula One in 2018 with state media saying hosting the race would cost the country $60 million per year.

The fee has been picked up in full by the country's largest private conglomerate, VinGroup, which had been hoping to dazzle with a night race.

But its 2020 race was cancelled due to concerns that teams and fans coming from overseas could spark a new outbreak of Covid-19 and the corruption scandal surrounding Nguyen Duc Chung now threatens the future of the event.

"Without Chung, the future of the race is gloomy. It might not happen," a source close to the race told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Babar Azam has been appointed as Pakistan Test captain, which now makes him the captain across all three formats. His first assignment will be to captain Pakistan in the ICC World Test Championship fixtures against New Zealand, which will be played in Mount Maunganui and Christchurch from 26-30 December and 3-7 January, respectively.

Babar replaces Azhar Ali, who last captained Pakistan against England this summer.

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani confirmed the appointment following a meeting with Azhar Ali on Tuesday evening in which he also thanked him for his contributions as a captain. The PCB Chairman subsequently spoke with Babar Azam following his side’s eight wickets in the third T20I against Zimbabwe and congratulated him on his appointment.

Ehsan Mani: “I want to thank Azhar Ali for stepping up last year by captaining the side in what was a historic first home Test series in over a decade. I believe Azhar still has a lot of cricket left in him and Pakistan cricket can continue to make the best use of his experience and knowledge as specialist top-order batsman moving forward.

“Babar Azam was identified at a very young age as a future leader and as part of his progression and development, he was appointed white-ball captain last year. With his consistent performance and leadership skills, he has demonstrated that he is ready to take on the additional responsibilities of a captain.

“As we are looking into the future, it is appropriate that we appoint him the captain now so that he continues to grow stronger with every match. I wish Babar all the best and remain optimistic that he will help Pakistan cricket make an upward movement across all formats not only through his performance but also with his positive attitude and result-oriented approach.”

Kiwi speedster Trent Boult gave a rousing start to Mumbai Indians in the final of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 against Delhi Capitals on Tuesday as the left-arm speedster dismissed Marcus Stoinis off the first delivery of the match. With the dismissal, Boult surpassed the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Zaheer Khan and Praveen Kumar to achieve a new record in IPL.

Boult, with the wicket of Stoinis, has the most wickets in the first over of an IPL season. Boult has picked up eight wickets in the first over of IPL 2020. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is next in the list with six wickets in IPL 2016 whereas Zaheer Khan had five first-over wickets to his name in IPL 2012. Praveen Kumar had five first-over scalps in IPL 2013.

Zaheer Khan - 5 in 2012

Praveen Kumar - 5 in 2013

Despite losing Marcus Stoinis in the very first delivery of IPL 2020 final, Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane continued with the run-flow. But it was Boult again who dismissed Ajinkya Rahane in what was a soft dismissal. After losing two wickets within three overs of the match, Delhi Capitals must focus on rebuilding their innings or else it might be the fifth IPL trophy for Mumbai Indians.

Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer on Tuesday won the toss and elected to bat first against Mumbai Indians in what promises to be a cracking final of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 at the Dubai International Stadium.

While Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals have faced each other thrice in IPL 2020, the Mumbai outfit has come out victorious in each occasion. However, Mumbai Indians have never won the final of IPL when batting second and that could be the reason behind DC opting to bat first.

“We'll bat. It really worked out pretty well in the last game. When you have a really good total on the board the bowling gets a lot of confidence. The team atmosphere is really motivated, we are in a good mood and have to enjoy the day. We are sticking with the same team,” Iyer said at the toss.

The team atmosphere is really motivated, we are in a good mood and have to enjoy the day. We are sticking with the same team,” Iyer said at the toss. Before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, Mumbai Indians traded Kiwi speedster Trent Boult from Delhi Capitals and the move has reaped rich rewards for the four-time IPL winners with the left-arm pacer being lethal with the ball throughout IPL 2020.

Boult will be up against his former side in the final of IPL 2020 on Tuesday with MI targeting their fifth IPL trophy. Ahead of the much-awaited summit clash between MI and DC, Rohit Sharma said Mumbai Indians were ‘lucky’ to have signed the best new-ball bowler.

Rohit said that Mumbai Indians wanted someone who would scalp those wickets in the powerplay and Boult has delivered it tremendously during the course of IPL 2020.

"We always wanted somebody who could get those wickets for us early in the powerplay with the new ball. We looked across the world and, obviously, it is a no-brainer that he is the best bowler with the new ball when it comes to swinging the new ball back into the batsmen, and to a left-hander taking the ball away. He is the best in the business,” Rohit said.

Australian great Steve Waugh on Tuesday said he was disappointed that Virat Kohli will miss three Tests against Australia to be at the birth of his first child after being granted paternity leave by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While Waugh was disappointed by Kohli missing three of the four Tests against Australia, former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan said people need to respect Kohli’s decision and appreciate that there is life beyond cricket.

The Indian skipper and his Bollywood superstar wife Anushka Sharma are expecting their first child in January with Kohli returning back to Indian from Australia after the first Test in Adelaide, which commences on December 17.

Kohli’s absence has come as a huge blow to broadcasters and cricket authorities are already feeling the effects in a pandemic affected year.

"I'm a little bit disappointed he's not going to be there -- and a bit surprised," former skipper Waugh, who played 168 Tests, told AFP.

"This was really shaping up as one the key series of his whole career after he's achieved just about everything. But obviously family comes first."

"It's a bit like a couple of years ago when India won without (David) Warner or (Steve) Smith in the side," he said.

"You really want to win against the best possible opposition, particularly when this is like the heavyweight title fight."

Whereas Irfan Pathan is of the view that people should understand that family is important and there is life beyond cricket. However, he admitted that Kohli not being there with the team will have a huge impact on Team India. Irfan further backed Rohit Sharma to lead the side in the Test series, in the absence of Kohli, as he said that Rohit is a proven leader.

“Virat Kohli not being there will have a huge impact on the team but you have to respect his decision. We have to accept and appreciate life beyond cricket, family is very important.

“On the field, it is bound to make a massive difference and it is very tough for anyone to fill his shoes. The way he has performed over the years and in all conditions.

“Nothing against Rahane but Rohit has to captain. He is a proven leader and has the required experience. His role as an opener will be equally crucial. He is the guy you want to play in Australia. I remember ODI series in 2008 and he was new but did quite well on Australian pitches. He will be raring to go after the injury,” Irfan Pathan told PTI.

Mumbai Indians will be taking on Delhi Capitals in the final of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 at the Dubai International Stadium on November 10 (Tuesday). Panesar further picked Kagiso Rabada to win the Purple Cap race as the South African speedster goes head-to-head with Jasprit Bumrah to become the highest wicket-taker of the tournament. Ahead of the match, Rabada has 29 scalps to his name in IPL 2020 whereas Bumrah is on 27 wickets.

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp united to fight for a U-turn to the Premier League's three-substitution rule after Manchester City and Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

A share of the points between the sides that have combined to win the title for the past three seasons leaves Liverpool in third just a point off the top, while City sit five points further back in 11th but with a game in hand.

A flying start from Liverpool was rewarded with Mohamed Salah's 13th-minute penalty, but Gabriel Jesus levelled for Guardiola's men before City captain Kevin De Bruyne pulled a penalty wide three minutes before half-time.

After a pulsating first 45 minutes, the tempo eased off in the second with Liverpool suffering an injury blow when Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced off with a calf problem.

Guardiola and Klopp have been outspoken advocates of the use of five substitutes, which was used in the Premier League at the end of last season and is being used in all other major leagues in Europe and the Champions League this season.

However, the Premier League's top teams lost a vote for it to remain for the 2020/21 season with fears it only serves to benefit the clubs with bigger squads.

"We speak about how we have to fight again and again about five substitutions," said Guardiola when asked about the subject of his post-match conversation with Klopp.

Klopp's brave team selection with Diogo Jota joining Roberto Firmino, Salah and Sadio Mane in a front four was rewarded with a blistering start from the defending champions.

"All around the world there is five substitutions. Barcelona expect Ansu Fati to be out for four months after the club confirmed the 18-year-old underwent surgery on his knee injury on Monday.

Fati had the operation after tearing the internal meniscus of his left knee during Barca's 5-2 win over Real Betis on Saturday.

He will miss the majority of the rest of the season but could return for the run-in and will hope to be fit again in time to play for Spain in next summer's European Championship.

Barca's chances in La Liga and the Champions League have been dealt a blow by Fati's injury, given the forward had emerged as one of Ronald Koeman's most exciting players.

Fati has already scored five goals and provided two assists in his 10 appearances this term.

"Ansu Fati has been operated on successfully by Dr. Ramon Cugat for the injury to the internal meniscus of his left knee under the supervision of the Club's medical staff. The player will be out for approximately four months," Barcelona said in a statement.

Argentine football great Diego Maradona is progressing well after brain surgery on a blood clot and could be discharged this week, his doctor said Monday.

Maradona, 60, underwent surgery last Tuesday to remove a clot lodged between his brain and skull.

"Diego is in the mood to leave, and we are evaluating the discharge that could be tomorrow or probably Wednesday, we have to see the clinical parameters, but the progress is very good," Leopoldo Luque told reporters.

Maradona, who went into isolation two weeks ago after one of his bodyguards displayed coronavirus symptoms, had looked unwell during a brief appearance on October 30 at his 60th birthday celebration at the stadium of Gimnasia y Esgrima, the Argentine Primera Division team he coaches.

He seemed to have difficulty walking and did not hang around to watch his side's match.

The following Monday, he was taken to hospital in La Plata, where the club is based, suffering from symptoms of anemia and dehydration.

Tests revealed the blood clot, after which Maradona was transferred to a specialist clinic in the capital.

Since his surgery, he has progressed well, although Luque had revealed Thursday that Maradona was receiving intensive treatment and sedatives for withdrawal symptoms. This treatment began to be scaled back on Monday.

Luque also played down a rumor cited by local press about the presence of a Covid-19 patient in the clinic.

"Covid is everywhere, there is nothing here that there is not elsewhere, and the care and protocols are followed to perfection," he said.

Luque also avoided specifying where Maradona will recuperate once he is discharged.

"We will discuss these issues when the time comes, we will discuss them together with the family. We all agree to take Diego forward," he said.

Maradona has been admitted to hospital three times in the last 20 years for serious health issues -- two of which were potentially fatal -- due to his drug and alcohol addictions.

Now free of drugs, Maradona remains dependent on alcohol.

Last week, his doctor had said the football star would require prolonged treatment in a clinic with different specialties than the current one.

Maradona's daughters Dalma, Giannina and Jana visit him daily at the clinic.

His oldest son, Diego Jr, who lives in Italy, announced last Thursday on social media that he had tested positive for Covid-19 and therefore would not be able to travel to Buenos Aires.

Delhi Capitals on Sunday defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 17 runs in the Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League, played in Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. With the win, DC seal their place in the final of IPL 2020 where they will face defending champions Mumbai Indians on November 10 in Dubai. Delhi Capitals successfully defended 188-run total on the scoreboard and were almost at the top of Sunrisers Hyderabad during the course of the match.

After opting to bat first, Delhi Capitals were off to a fine start courtesy Shikhar Dhawan and his new opening partner Marcus Stoinis as the duo stitched an 86-run opening stand. While Stoinis perished for 38, Dhawan continued the run-flow and scored a crisp 78 off 50 deliveries. DC skipper Shreyas Iyer continued his cold form of run as he scored a 20-ball 21. However, it was due to Shimron Hetmyer’s late flourish that Delhi Capitals went on to post 189/3 in 20 overs. The West Indian southpaw hammered a blistering 22-ball 42 not-out.

While it was not the perfect outing for SRH bowlers, T Natarajan impressed with the ball and his yorkers as he conceded 32 off his four overs. Rashid Khan, as usual, was terrific with the ball, conceding 26 off his four-over quota.

Chasing 189, Sunrisers Hyderabad lost David Warner for 2 as Kagiso Rabada cleaned him up with a peach of a delivery. Manish Pandey and Priyam Garg hung around for a bit and played some great strokes but the duo was dismissed for 21 and 17 respectively.

Even Jason Holder was dismissed for 11 by a clever Axar Patel. However, an in-form Kane Williamson showed his class and went on to smash a terrific half-century to take the game deep.

Young Abdul Samad partnered Kane Williamson perfectly to help SRH remain in the game while scoring some attractive strokes but failed to take them over the line. Kagiso Rabada was too hot too handle for SRH’s lower-middle order as DC sealed a good win to set-up the final with MI.

Manchester United eased some pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the Red Devils defeated Everton 3-1 on Sunday. Solksjaer had been under the pump due to United’s lacklustre start to the season as they hit a new low after their shock defeat in UEFA Champions League against Istanbul Basaksehir in the midweek.

With three wins in seven Premier League matches, United are still in the bottom half of the Premier League table but defender Harry Maguire feels Solskjaer and United don’t deserve so much criticism.

Insisting United's critics resent the club's past success, Maguire said: "At this club one thing I've noticed in my time here - I've been here a year and a half - is we are the most talked-about club in the world.

"Why? Because we are the biggest club in the world. People don't want us to do well. Why? Probably because of the success we've had in the past.

"We have to live up to that, we have to react to it and don't let the negatives get into our bubble inside the training ground. Sometimes it is difficult for the lads."

Speaking after the match in a video posted on Manchester United's Twitter account, Maguire added: "We reacted well to two poor results. We felt we were on the right track after Leipzig (a 5-0 win) and we let ourselves down against Arsenal (last Sunday).

"It wasn't good enough as a performance. In the week again we gave them a soft goal and found it too hard to create chances to come back.
