Lewis Hamilton has been named the most influential black person in the United Kingdom after topping the Powerlist 2021. Hamilton bagged the prestigious award after winning the Formula One World Championship for a record-equalling seventh time.

The Powerlist honours the most powerful people of African, African-Caribbean and African-American heritage in the United Kingdom. And in the 2021 edition, the focus was on the two of the biggest themes of 2020 – COVID-19 and racial discrimination.

The independent judging panel of Powerlist 2021 looked upon the people who have "ability to change lives and alter events, as demonstrated over a protracted period of time and in a positive manner".

Lewis Hamilton bagged the award for not only his phenomenal driving skills or for being F1’s only black driver. Hamilton has been extremely vocal in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, especially since the death of George Floyd under police custody.

In June 2020, Hamilton asked his fellow F1 drivers to take a knee before races while launching The Hamilton Commission, aimed at increasing the number of black people in motor racing.

Besides talking passionately about the BLM movement, Hamilton also wore a T-shirt with ‘Black Lives Matter’ written on it. His face masks were also dedicated to the victims of racial injustice.

Australia’s World Cup-winning coach John Buchanan has recalled former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly as the leader who took the heated rivalry between India and Australia to a different level. Buchanan explained that the rivalry between India and Australia was only ‘developing’ when Ganguly was named the captain of the Indian team but turned his players into passionate bunch who could see that feared Aussie side eye-to-eye.

Buchanan also worked with Ganguly in the Indian Premier League for Kolkata Knight Riders. The former Australian coach said that he finds shades of Ganguly in current skipper Virat Kohli.

“Once Sourav took over, he instilled a different way of not only playing but also a different way of just conducting themselves against strong oppositions like Australia. It was a developing rivalry for sure, but Sourav was able to take it to another level. Like Ganguly, Kohli has done the same thing for the Indian team,” Buchanan told Sportstar.

India are set to take on Australia in a four-match Test series to conclude the two-month-long tour. Last time in 2018-19 tour, India, under the leadership of Kohli, defeated Australia for the first time.

“He (Kohli) has done an incredibly good job - irrespective of whether he is scoring runs or not. If we go back to 2019, [Cheteshwar] Pujara was the star of the series and Kohli made some contributions, so did [Ajinkya] Rahane... But Kohli’s real contribution is his leadership and captaincy and the way he instils greatness - not only to win games but also in finding a way to beat teams,” Buchanan added.

However, Buchanan feels that Kohli’s absence in the final three Tests will play a major role in determining the result of the much-awaited series.

“I think his absence in the final three Tests is going to play a pivotal part in the way the series plays out,” Buchanan opined.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) have announced the qualification process for cricket, which makes a historic appearance at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, scheduled from 28 July to 8 August.

In what is seen as a huge opportunity to turbo-charge the growth of the game, and take it to new fans, women’s cricket will be a part of the Commonwealth Games for the first time ever, and it will only be the second time that cricket will feature in it after a men’s competition was part of the Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.

The qualification process announced on Wednesday grants hosts England one spot while six other highest-ranked ICC Members in the CC Women’s T20I Team Rankings as of 1 April 2021 also qualify directly for the eight-team tournament, which will be held in a city that has an iconic cricket venue in Edgbaston.

The remaining place will be allocated to the winner of a Commonwealth Games Qualifier, the format and details of which will be announced in due course. The deadline for the Qualifier is 31 January 2022.

Since athletes from the Caribbean will be representing their countries and not the West Indies (as they are affiliated with the ICC), the winner of a designated qualifying tournament will decide which country gets to compete if the West Indies get a slot.

CGF President Dame Louise Martin and ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney emphasized on the potential of cricket in the Commonwealth Games while captains of leading teams said they were thrilled at the prospect of women’s cricket featuring in the Games.

ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney: "Cricket at the Commonwealth Games is a fantastic opportunity for us to continue to grow the women’s game globally. We are committed to accelerating this growth and maintaining the momentum we have created over the past few years, which most recently saw 86,174 fans packed into the MCG for the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020.

"I thank the Commonwealth Games Federation for their support and for making this possible. We share with them the vision of greater equality, fairness and opportunity in sport and I am sure Birmingham 2022 will go a long way towards us achieving our common objectives."

Commonwealth Games Federation President Dame Louise Martin: "We are absolutely delighted to have women’s T20 cricket debut at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

"Cricket has always been one of the Commonwealth’s most popular sports and it is so special to have it back at our Games for the first time since the men’s competition at Kuala Lumpur 1998, where true greats of the game including Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Sachin Tendulkar were on show. Now is the turn of the women and I can’t wait to see the next generation of stars like Heather Knight, Harmanpreet Kaur and Meg Lanning take centre stage.

"Birmingham 2022 will be a fantastic showcase for the women’s game and the unveiling of the qualification criteria today is an exciting and important milestone as we head towards what will be a spectacular competition at the iconic Edgbaston Stadium."

ICC Women’s Cricket Manager Holly Colvin: "We have worked closely with the CGF and ICC Members over the last year to confirm the qualification process. It’s fantastic that we are supporting opportunities for a Caribbean island and Commonwealth countries ranked outside the top seven to have the chance to qualify for this momentous event.

"It is a watershed moment for our sport as women’s cricket takes centre stage for the first time at the Commonwealth Games. It is a huge opportunity to show the skills, strength and talent of these female athletes to sports fans across the Commonwealth and attract a new audience to continue to break boundaries for a bright future.

"It is hugely exciting for cricket to be a central part of the sports programme where more medals are awarded to female athletes. Cricket will be staged in the heart of Birmingham, which is a vibrant, diverse city with a strong passion for cricket. We expect nothing less from the crowd supporting the women’s teams at Edgbaston."

England captain Heather Knight: "It’s incredibly exciting that we’re going to be taking part in the Commonwealth Games on home soil. It’s an event I’ve often watched and I never really imagined I’d be taking part so it feels really special.

"It’s another fantastic opportunity for the game of cricket, with coverage live on the BBC, and the chance to reach the thousands of fans who like attending multi-discipline events.

"We can’t wait to be in Birmingham amongst all the other athletes, and we’re counting down towards 2022 – it’s going to be a huge year for us and for women’s cricket in general."

Australia captain Meg Lanning: "The women’s game has gone to another level over the past few years and its inclusion at the Commonwealth Games is a huge opportunity to take it further.

Cricket in Commonwealth Games: ICC announces qualification process

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday confirmed that England will make their first visit to Pakistan in 16 years to play two T20Is in Karachi on 14 and 15 October. England's tour to Pakistan next October will be for the first time since a 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan team bus.

England will arrive in Karachi on 12 October, and both the sides will depart for India on 16 October for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the end of the series.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the tour on Tuesday evening following last month’s invite by the PCB for a short tour in January 2021.

Due to the non-availability of its top stars during that period as they will be busy in international cricket, the ECB proposed the short tour in October in the lead up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which was welcomed by the PCB.

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan: “I am delighted to confirm that England will be touring Pakistan to play two T20Is in October 2021. This will be their first visit to Pakistan for 16 years and will open the door for both Test and white-ball tours in the 2022-23 season.

“The October 2021 T20Is will allow the leading England cricketers to access and examine the world-class arrangements we will put together, which will give them further encouragement and confidence to not only return in 2022-23 but also express their interest in the Pakistan Super League, which has grown to become one of the top leagues in the world.

“England’s visit to Pakistan for the 14 and 15 October 2021 T20Is will provide further lift to our passionate fans, both in Pakistan and across the globe. The nation has waited patiently for cricket to return sustainably to Pakistan and the 2021 tours by South Africa, New Zealand and England will only ensure international cricket is played uninterruptedly.

“The enhanced progress made over the last two years has been down to nurturing relationships with various cricket boards and international players, as well as building trust and confidence.

“The ECB’s confirmation further endorses Pakistan as safe and secure. Importantly, this announcement speaks volumes for the relationship that we have with the ECB and I would like to thank the ECB for their strong will and desire to make this short tour a reality.

“England’s visit in 2021 is an outcome of the PCB’s efforts and hard work to ensure Pakistan cricket continues to move in the right direction.”

ECB Chief Executive Tom Harrison: “It’s a real pleasure to announce that the England men’s T20I squad will be playing in Pakistan in October 2021. This will be first time since 2005 that an England team has toured Pakistan and, as such, it represents a significant moment for both nations.

“As was demonstrated this summer, we have a strong relationship with the PCB, and the ECB is delighted to be able to play our part in ensuring the safe return of international cricket to this wonderful nation of passionate cricket fans.

“As always, the safety and welfare of our players and staff will be paramount. We are working closely with the PCB to ensure all the necessary plans are in place, especially concerning the anticipated levels of security around the team, the proposed travel protocols and of course the situation regarding the fast-moving and ever-changing COVID-19 pandemic.

First time in 16 years! England confirm Pakistan tour in 2021

England football team head coach Gareth Southgate has called out the Premier League clubs for pressurizing players over their playing time with the national team. Southgate said that Premier League club managers are worried about player fatigue and injuries due to jam-packed schedule.

Southgate further said that the players are keen to play for their country but have been pushed in a “difficult situation” with their clubs. The hectic club fixture along with three matches in seven days for England is a tough task for players. England lost their last match 2-0 against Belgium, ending their hopes of reaching the Nations League final.

“They are under huge pressure from their clubs. That is going on in the background, for sure,” Southgate told reporters ahead of England’s final Nations League group match against Iceland.

England have already lost the likes of Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling as the duo picked up injuries on international duty. Ben Chilwell is also being assessed for a back issue. However, Southgate said that he understands the pressure Premier League managers are in as it is not a two or three clubs title race any more.

“We do not just have two or three clubs in the title race any more, we’re looking at six or seven clubs in England and there is huge pressure on every result,” he added.

England football team head coach Gareth Southgate has called out the Premier League clubs for pressurizing players over their playing time with the national team.

It manifests itself in different ways but that is what happens.” England have already lost the likes of Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling as the duo picked up injuries on international duty. Gareth Southgate: England players under massive pressure from clubs over playing time

With less than 24 hours away from a career-defining moment, LaMelo Ball bottled his excitement for the D-Day. The brevity of his answers to any and all questions didn’t give away anything until he was asked about why he should be the #1 pick. “I was born to be #1 pick,” asserted Ball. “Being the #1 pick definitely holds a lot to me.”

The youngest of the Ball brothers has been a journeyman even before getting drafted into the NBA. Having played professionally in the Australian NBL, Lithuania, competing at the SPIRE Institute in Ohio after leaving Chino Hills (Calif.) High School as a junior, Ball feels all the stops helped him become a better player. “I feel like when you go overseas, it’s a whole new different style of play; something that you can just add to the arsenal,” Ball said. “So, I feel like it helped me in that aspect.”

Ask him if it was a gamble to not have college experience and play professionally, Ball shrugs it off. “You could say it was a gamble, but for me, I already figured out what was gonna happen, me going there, what I was getting myself into,” said Ball.

In Detroit since March for Draft training, Ball conducted workouts with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, Charlotte Hornets and Detroit Pistons. The Timberwolves, Warriors and Hornets own the top three picks.

But his father LaVar Ball has other ideas as he wants LaMelo to play for the New York Knicks or Pistons. “He probably just likes the big market,” the 6ft 7in player said. “He raised me, taught me the game pretty much; everything I knew when I was little. So, I appreciate all that. It’s my pops, so he’s always gonna be involved.”

Ball’s brother Lonzo is a guard with the New Orleans Pelicans and was also the second pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. So, Ball knows the weight of expectations on his shoulder but isn’t too worried about it. “I am ok. No pressure, it is just basketball. I am cool,” said Ball.

All this might change a little bit though minutes after his name is announced. But Ball is ready to play the role that comes with being one of the most spoken about the prospect. “Pretty much whenever I get there, and [whatever] the coach asks me to do, I’m gonna do,” he said of his role with the team that drafts him.

For now, his typical day is about waking up, going to work out and shoot, get some breakfast, come back and stretch, go to the gym at around 6 PM, come back, eat while watching a movie and repeat it the next day. This routine may never be the same again after the 2020 NBA Draft.

NBA 2020 Draft: History, Stats and all the numbers you need to know

Masters records, emerging talent and the LPGA Tour's return feature in AFP Sport's golf talking points this week:

- Top rank, major hindrance -

Dustin Johnson secured his second major with a record-breaking 20-under-par total at the Masters, also breaking a cursed run for world number ones in majors.

Incredibly, Johnson was the first world number one to win any major since Rory McIlroy's victory at the US PGA Championship in 2014.

He was also the first player who was top of the rankings to win the Masters since Tiger Woods in 2002.

In fact, down the years being world number one has been almost a disadvantage in majors.

Johnson is only the fifth player since the world rankings began in 1986 to win a major while on top, joining Ian Woosnam, Fred Couples, Woods and McIlroy.

But while Woods managed it as number one for 11 of his 15 major victories, the others have only done it once each.

That means just 15 majors out of 139 since the rankings began have seen the world number one lift the trophy. And just four out of 128 if your name doesn't happen to be Tiger Woods.

- Im makes Asian history -

Im Sung-jae at just 22 years old crowned a remarkable debut at Augusta National with Asia's best finish in the US Masters, as the South Korean finished joint runner-up alongside Australia's Cameron Smith.

Im, the 2019 US PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, eclipsed countryman KJ Choi's third place in 2004 after closing with a final round of three-under-par 69 to finish 15-under, five strokes behind winner Dustin Johnson.

Im, who won The Honda Classic for his first PGA Tour victory in March, now has his sights set on becoming Asia's second major winner, after South Korea's YE Yang who lifted the US PGA Championship in 2009. Yang's best finish in the Masters was tied eighth in 2010.

"Finishing tied for second is unbelievable, and I'm proud of my game," said Im, who has broken into the world's top 20 for the first time.

He also joined some illustrious company in becoming the third-youngest player in history, after Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods, to finish in the top five at the Masters.

- LPGA back to the future -

If you thought that was it for majors in 2020 once Johnson had slipped on his green jacket, then think again. The Women's US Open is still to come on December 10 at the Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas.

Ahead of that the US LPGA Tour swings back into action this week after a break of almost a month with the inaugural Pelican Championship at Belleair in Tampa, Florida, marking a return to the area where the elite women's tour all began 70 years ago.

The first ever LPGA event was played in Tampa in January 1950, but the tour hasn't been back since the St. Petersburg Women's Open was played there in 1989.

On its return to its birthplace, world number one Ko Jin-young will finally be making her 2020 LPGA debut in a Covid-wracked year, having chosen to remain in South Korea and play the domestic KLPGA Tour during the pandemic.

Ko will be welcomed back by a field that is one of the year's strongest outside a major with other top 10 stars Kim Sei-young, Nelly Korda, Danielle Kang, Nasa Hataoka, Brooke Henderson, Minjee Lee and Park Sung-hyun all teeing up.

Johnson breaks a curse, Im on the rise: golf talking points

The crisis engulfing South African cricket was seemingly averted on Monday as the interim board of the country's governing body looked set to be appointed hours before England were due to fly to Cape Town for a limited overs tour.

Judge Zak Yacoob, chairman of the interim board of Cricket South Africa (CSA), said in a message sent to reporters that the body's members' council had made the decision to recognise the board after a weekend of uncertainty.

Yacoob said that the decision had been made on Monday afternoon and that there would be a meeting between the members' council –- representing the presidents of South Africa's provincial unions –- and the interim board on Monday evening.

Contacted by AFP, there was no immediate confirmation from CSA.

Yacoob's remarks followed a weekend of uncertainty during which the members' council reportedly initially refused to bow to pressure from sports minister Nathi Mthethwa, who has the power to withdraw government recognition of CSA as the controlling body of cricket in South Africa.

Mthethwa threatened to intervene directly unless the council reversed a decision, announced last Thursday, not to recognise the interim board.

Government interference would jeopardise South Africa's standing in the International Cricket Council, potentially putting international tours at risk, although it was reported locally that the England and Wales Cricket Board had been assured that the crisis would not affect the England tour.

The England team were due to fly to Cape Town on Monday evening for three Twenty20 internationals and three one-day internationals, starting on November 27.

The interim board was appointed last month after all the elected board members, including some who remain on the members’ council, resigned.

Their resignations brought to a climax a year of turmoil in the administration of South African cricket.

South African cricket crisis nears end as board set to be appointed

Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez scored as title-holders Algeria drew 2-2 in Zimbabwe Monday and became the third country to book a place at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Cameroon qualify automatically as hosts while Senegal secured a spot Sunday by winning in Guinea-Bissau thanks to a Sadio Mane goal.

Andy Delort and captain Mahrez gave the Desert Foxes a two-goal advantage in Harare that was halved just before half-time when Knowledge Musona netted.

Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi took off Delort and Mahrez as he made five second-half substitutions within 12 minutes, but the bold move backfired when Prince Dube equalised eight minutes from time.

Drawing ended the perfect three-win record Algeria took into a match played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus, but it guaranteed them a top-two finish in a section including Zambia and Botswana.

Zambia, hoping for a resurgence under Serb coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic, suffered a blow to hopes of accompanying Algeria from Group H when they fell 1-0 away to Botswana.

Mosha Gaolaolwe scored what proved the only goal in Francistown after just six minutes and it lifted Botswana to third, one point behind Zimbabwe.

This was the third loss in four group matches for 2012 African champions Zambia, who will host Algeria and visit Zimbabwe during the final two matchdays next March.

Uganda suffered a shock loss 1-0 away to South Sudan and Burkina Faso drew 0-0 in Malawi to miss out on chances to qualify from Group A.

Uganda-born Tito Okello condemned his country of birth to a first defeat in the section when he converted a first-half penalty in a qualifier marred by two red cards.

- Memorable South Sudan victory -

Khalid Aucho got a straight red to leave Uganda with 10 men for an hour while South Sudan substitute Abdallah Musa was yellow-carded twice and sent off during 15 minutes on the pitch.

Making the victory more memorable for South Sudan was the fact that they had to play the 'home' fixture in Kenya because the national stadium in Juba is being renovated.

Late goals from Percy Tau and Themba Zwane earned South Africa a 4-2 Group C win in Port Elizabeth over Sao Tome e Principe, who led, trailed and equalised before collapsing when reduced to 10 men.

Sao Tome, who are 110 places behind South Africa in the world rankings, lost Ivonaldo Mendes nine minutes from time when he was red-carded following a second caution with the sides level.

The minnows held on for six minutes before Belgium-based Tau gave South Africa the lead for the second time in the see-saw struggle and Zwane put the outcome beyond doubt.

Victory took South Africa to nine points, equal with Ghana but behind on head-to-head records. Sudan are the other contenders for a top-two place.

Gambia regained first place in Group D from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang-captained Gabon after winning the top-of-the-table clash 2-1 in Bakau.

Modou Barrow and Musa Barrow scored to put the Scorpions in control until a late goal from Bruno Ecuele Manga created a tense finish.

Cameroon are part of the qualifying competition to gain match practice and increased their Group F lead to six points after a 2-0 win in Mozambique with Vincent Aboubakar among the scorers.

In Manzini, eSwatini were eliminated and Congo Brazzaville strengthened a grip on second place behind Senegal after a 0-0 draw.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach on Tuesday said that athletes won’t be forced to get COVID-19 vaccinations ahead of the upcoming Tokyo Olympics but added that they should have it as a “demonstration of solidarity” with the Japanese.

Bach visited the Athletes’ Village on Tuesday before concluding his two-day Tokyo visit to the National Stadium.

“We will encourage athletes that whenever possible they have the vaccination because it is better for their health, and it is also a demonstration of solidarity with their fellow athletes and also the Japanese people,” said the German.

Bach, who was in his first trip to Japan since the decision to postpone the Tokyo Games in March, has spoken about the major impact a vaccine could have on the prospects of Tokyo hosting the Olympics in 2021.

More than 11,000 athletes are expected to land in Tokyo for the Games, which are scheduled to commence from July 23 with around thousands expected for the subsequent Paralympics.

However, when asked whether athletes would queue up to get the potential vaccine before the Tokyo Olympics, Bach sounded confident that this wouldn’t be the case.

“We made it clear from the very beginning that the first priorities are for the nurses, medical doctors and everybody who keeps our society alive, despite the coronavirus crisis,” Bach told reporters at the National Stadium.

The overhaul of players and staff at Mumbai City FC during the offseason saw the club recruit a familiar face in Indian football, with Sergio Lobera taking over the reigns as the club’s new Head Coach. The Spaniard will be looking to add the elusive Hero Indian Super League trophy to the club's cabinet and has expressed his full faith in the current balance and set-up of the squad ahead of the much-anticipated 2020-21 edition of the league.

Speaking ahead of Mumbai City’s season opener against NorthEast United which takes place on Saturday, Lobera addressed the media over a virtual press conference from the club’s bio-secure bubble in Goa on Tuesday afternoon. "I am very happy to be back here in India and very excited to be a part of the Mumbai City family. We have a great challenge ahead of us here, and with the current COVID-19 situation and living in the bio-bubble, I want such challenges because it makes us work closely and collectively in the best way,” he said.

“We have started training well in these past few weeks, and I am delighted to be working with this group of players who have been great in training. I am excited to see what each one of our players can offer to us, and if we can get our ideas through to them, it’ll be a great season for us and for our fans,” added the 43-year-old.

Having been a former assistant and a youth coach at FC Barcelona, Lobera is known to follow an attractive brand of football, and the Head Coach reckons he is aiming to bring the same brand to Mumbai City. “You know what my idea of playing is, and I followed the same at three seasons at FC Goa. It is important for me that spectators enjoy the football that we play – of course, winning the matches is important, but I also believe in having my team play an attacking brand of football where we are also able to create a balance. I want my team to be able to play beautiful, possession-based football, and also close down teams to quickly win back possession,” said the Spaniard.

When asked about how the City Football Group has helped him settle at the club, and what kind of support they provide, Lobera said he has been fortunate to have received help pertaining to a lot of areas. “The benefits of having the CFG advise us are plenty - the advice we get and the support is very important for me. I think there are a lot of people with great football knowledge at CFG, and as a coach, you can improve when you work with such people. I speak every day with different departments, who provided us with a lot of things including analysis, and the different learnings from their 10 teams around the world, especially lessons learnt under these unique circumstances,” expressed the Head Coach.

“We are working together with big ambitions and also keeping our long-term plans in mind. In my 25-year career, I have worked at some great clubs including Barcelona, but I can tell you that I have never worked before in this way and it is amazing to be working with Mumbai City and CFG," added Lobera.

Asked to comment on the make-up of the squad, Lobera expressed satisfaction at being able to assemble a good squad ahead of the 2020/21 season. “I am very happy with the team I have. I think we have special players and I am trying to get the players to play in our style and hopefully, we can perform when the season gets underway. In my team, I obviously want players who want to win everything, but my focus is on playing beautiful football, with the final objective being - to win the matches,” said Lobera.

Also commenting on having the option of five substitutes in a game, Lobera said he was pleased that he can influence more matches through the substitutions. “In my opinion, it is good to have five substitutes. It means when you can do more changes, you can influence and change the direction of the game. It is a good option."

Lobera also added that his focus will also be on improving the Indian players. “We need to work in all the directions. We have some amazing players who have had great careers, but the most important is to improve the level of the Indian players. For me, as a coach, I need the help of foreign players to improve the Indian players. It’s impossible to win a trophy if the Indian players aren't at the level, and it is also impossible to win when your foreign players do not gel with the Indian players. So as the coach, I need my foreign players to play a big role on and off the pitch."

Adding that playing without their supporters is difficult, Lobera said, “We still feel they are here. Today, with social media and with regular interaction with our fans, we do feel closer to them and hopefully, we can make them happy with our performances."

Lobera was also appreciative of ISL’s decision to have more teams this season. He said, “It’s good if the ISL improving a lot in the last seasons. It’s good playing new teams in the league. It means we need to play against 10 teams and with all the teams having good players."

Dismissing talks of his team being the favourites, Lobera said, “In my opinion, it is going to be the most difficult and competitive season till now. I want to respect all teams, and obviously, if I say we are favourites, maybe it’s not respecting the other teams and maybe it is not true. We have some great teams who have great players and have won the titles. Our dream is to work hard and to try to finish in the best position that is possible, and the best position is number one. We need to keep working and at the end of the season, we will see.”

Signing off, Lobera added that he reckons the season opener against NorthEast United “will be a difficult game”, but his team “needs to manage this situation and try to prepare in the best way possible and start strongly”.

It’s impossible to win a trophy if the Indian players aren't at the level, and it is also impossible to win when your foreign players do not gel with the Indian players. So as the coach, I need my foreign players to play a big role on and off the pitch." Adding that playing without their supporters is difficult, Lobera said, “We still feel they are here. Today, with social media and with regular interaction with our fans, we do feel closer to them and hopefully, we can make them happy with our performances." Lobera was also appreciative of ISL’s decision to have more teams this season. He said, “It’s good if the ISL improving a lot in the last seasons. It’s good playing new teams in the league. It means we need to play against 10 teams and with all the teams having good players." Dismissing talks of his team being the favourites, Lobera said, “In my opinion, it is going to be the most difficult and competitive season till now. I want to respect all teams, and obviously, if I say we are favourites, maybe it’s not respecting the other teams and maybe it is not true. We have some great teams who have great players and have won the titles. Our dream is to work hard and to try to finish in the best position that is possible, and the best position is number one. We need to keep working and at the end of the season, we will see.” Signing off, Lobera added that he reckons the season opener against NorthEast United “will be a difficult game”, but his team “needs to manage this situation and try to prepare in the best way possible and start strongly”.

Uruguay's top goal scorer Luis Suarez has tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss their World Cup qualifier against Brazil, local football chiefs said on Monday.

The positive test also means Suarez will miss his club Atletico Madrid's La Liga outing against Barcelona, which would have been the first time he ran out against his former team.

"Tests have been carried out on all the members of the national team, with the result that the players Luis Suarez (and) Rodrigo Munoz and the official, Matias Faral, have tested positive for Covid-19," the Uruguayan football federation said in a statement.

All three are "in good health", it added. They join defender Matias Vina, who tested positive on Saturday after Uruguay's 3-0 win over Colombia in Barranquilla.

Uruguay, who have not beaten Brazil since 2001, host the Brazilians (minus an injured Neymar) in Montevideo on Tuesday.

Brazil top the round-robin South American qualifying group for the 2022 finals in Qatar with nine points from three games, Argentina are on seven, Ecuador on six and Uruguay on six points.

Top-ranked Dustin Johnson won the Masters in record-smashing fashion on Sunday, capturing his second major title with the lowest total score in Augusta National history.

The 36-year-old American, known for keeping his cool on the course, was in tears after winning the green jacket only an hour's drive from where he grew up.

"It's a dream come true," a crying Johnson said. "As a kid I always wanted to become a Masters champion. It's just incredible.

"I never have this much trouble gathering myself. On the golf course I'm good at it."

No one in Masters history was better as Johnson, whose other major victory came at the 2016 US Open, fired a four-under-par 68 to finish on a Masters record 20-under-par 268.

That was good enough for a five-stroke triumph over South Korean Im Sung-jae and Australian Cameron Smith with third-ranked American Justin Thomas fourth on 276.

Johnson's score in relation to par matched the lowest in major history and smashed the old 72-hole Masters mark of 18-under 270 set by Woods in 1997 and matched by Jordan Spieth in 2015.

It was an incredible turnaround for a player who missed his planned Masters tuneups after contracting Covid-19 last month, returning only last week with a runner-up effort in Houston.

Johnson, who began with a four-shot edge, had never converted a 54-hole major lead into a title, stumbling at the 2010, 2015 and 2018 US Opens and in August's PGA Championship, where he settled for a runner-up spot.

That hex ended Sunday, but not without some early drama as Johnson's lead fell to one.

Johnson made back-to-back bogeys at the fifth and par-3 sixth, ending a run of 33 bogey-free holes, to leave Im one back.

"They weren't bad shots," Johnson said. "I didn't let it bother me too much. At six I made a birdie and that got me back."

Im fell back with bogeys at six and seven, Johnson also birdied the par-5 eighth and never looked back.

"I was nervous all day," Johnson said. "I could feel it. The Masters to me was the biggest. It still feels like a dream. I'm proud of the way I handled myself and finished off the golf tournament."

Johnson, the first reigning world number one to grab the green jacket since Tiger Woods in 2002, was denied the usual champion's roars from spectators as no fans were allowed due to the Covid-19 pandemic that postponed the event from its usual April slot.

- 'Amazing ability' -

After overcoming his early wobble, Johnson was unflappable with deadly accuracy and consistency, his birdie streak from 13 through 15 lifting his week to historic status.

"DJ has just an amazing ability to stay calm in tough moments," Woods said. There's no one more suited to that, I think, than DJ."

Johnson's four total bogeys were the fewest of any Masters champion.

Im had the lowest score for any Masters newcomer but couldn't become the first debut winner since 1979.

"My goal was to make the cut," Im said through a translator. "To finish tied for second is unbelievable."

Smith closed on 69, becoming the first Masters player to shoot all four rounds in the 60s.

"That's cool," he said. "A lot of good around here this week."

Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, needing a green jacket to complete a career Grand Slam, shot 69 to share fifth on 277 but never threatened Johnson.

- Woods horror show -

McIlroy, unable to recover from a first-round 75, took some solace after a sixth failed attempt to complete the career Slam.

"I didn't have a great start but over the last 54 holes, only two bogeys, a lot of great golf in there," McIlroy said. "Not overthinking it as much could be the key for me."

Woods, a five-time Masters winner and 15-time major champion, found Rae's Creek three times on his way to a septuple-bogey 10 at the par-3 12th, his worst score ever on a major hole. He responded with birdies on five of the last six holes to close on 76 and finish on 287.

"Hit a few too many shots than I wanted," Woods said. "Had a lot more experiences there in Rae's Creek."

Germany's Bernhard Langer, at 63 the oldest to make any Masters cut, shot 71 to finish on 285, one stroke better than US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, who closed on 73 and never threatened to overpower Augusta, nagged by dizziness.

"I've got to fix this dizziness," he said. "I've got to get healthy first and foremost."

Tearful Johnson captures Masters for second major title

Rafael Nadal launched his bid for a first ATP Finals trophy in style on Sunday, taming in-form Andrey Rublev in straight sets in London after Dominic Thiem beat Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The Spanish world number two, chasing the biggest prize missing from his glittering resume, barely broke sweat as he outclassed the Russian debutant 6-3, 6-4 at the empty O2 Arena.

Earlier, US Open champion Thiem avenged his defeat by Tsitsipas in the championship match last year, beating the Greek sixth seed 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-3.

Nadal, who last month equalled Roger Federer's record of 20 Grand Slams by winning the French Open, has won 86 titles but just one of those has come on an indoor hard court.

His record at the eight-man elite event pales in comparison with his main rivals. Federer, who is absent with injury, has won it a record six times and Novak Djokovic has triumphed five times.

Nadal, 34, and Rublev both held serve comfortably in the early stages of their Group London 2020 round-robin match.

But the Spaniard, who was comprehensively outserving his 23-year-old opponent, made his move in the sixth game, breaking the Russian, who hurled his racket to the ground in frustration, and wrapping up the set with the minimum of fuss.

Rublev, who has won a tour-leading five titles during the coronavirus-interrupted 2020 season, was broken again in the first game of the second set, leaving him with a mountain to climb.

The seventh seed upped his first-serve percentage but it was too little too late.

Nadal did not face a break point in the entire 77-minute match.

"Always the first match is very tricky," said Nadal. "Every match is difficult when you're playing against the best of the best so it's a positive start for me, very happy."

"I think my serve worked very well tonight so that's a bit of help always on these surfaces," added the two-time finalist.

"I had my few chances on the return and I converted."

The French Open champion said winning in straight sets was a big confidence boost ahead of his "super-difficult match" against Thiem on Tuesday.

The Spaniard has qualified for the ATP Finals for a record 16 consecutive years but has been forced to withdraw on six occasions.

A combination of injuries and his preference for other surfaces has counted against him but his greater freshness as a result of a shorter season may boost his chances this year.

- Thiem revenge -

In the opening match on Sunday, Austria's Thiem missed a clutch of break points against Tsitsipas but battled back from 4-1 down in the first set tie-break to take the lead.

The defending champion broke early in the second set to level the match and appeared to have the momentum but Thiem rallied impressively, earning a break with a delicately dinked forehand in the second game of the decider, which proved decisive.

"I think the level was higher last year," said Thiem.

"We were both in great shape last year in the final, we wanted that title 100 percent. The atmosphere was insane last year in the final and today was a little bit different."

Earlier, Novak Djokovic received the ATP Tour No. 1 trophy after finishing the year at the top of the rankings for a record-equalling sixth time.

The top seed, who is competing in Group Tokyo 1970 alongside Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Diego Schwartzman, plays his opening match on Monday.

The O2 Arena is hosting the ATP Finals for the 12th and final season before the year-end championships moves to Turin next year.

The seventh seed upped his first-serve percentage but it was too little too late. Nadal did not face a break point in the entire 77-minute match. "Always the first match is very tricky," said Nadal. "Every match is difficult when you're playing against the best of the best so it's a positive start for me, very happy." "I think my serve worked very well tonight so that's a bit of help always on these surfaces," added the two-time finalist. "I had my few chances on the return and I converted." The French Open champion said winning in straight sets was a big confidence boost ahead of his "super-difficult match" against Thiem on Tuesday. The Spaniard has qualified for the ATP Finals for a record 16 consecutive years but has been forced to withdraw on six occasions. A combination of injuries and his preference for other surfaces has counted against him but his greater freshness as a result of a shorter season may boost his chances this year. - Thiem revenge - In the opening match on Sunday, Austria's Thiem missed a clutch of break points against Tsitsipas but battled back from 4-1 down in the first set tie-break to take the lead. The atmosphere was insane last year in the final and today was a little bit different." Earlier, Novak Djokovic received the ATP Tour No.

Lewis Hamilton has joined Michael Schumacher as the most successful driver in Formula One's history - yet despite all the acclaim, the seven-time world champion divides opinion.

With 20.6 million Instagram followers Hamilton is by a country mile the most popular member of the Formula One grid, supported by an army of loyal fans known as 'Team LH'.

"The greatest sportsman this country has ever produced - no doubts," tweeted former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand after Hamilton crossed the finish line in Istanbul on Sunday.

Yet Hamilton's rise to F1 legend status has been accompanied by articles in his homeland exploring the same question - 'why is he disliked?'

Just as in Schmacher's all-conquering era with Ferrari, Hamilton and Mercedes have become victims of their own success.

Mercedes are accused in the court of public opinion of being too good and turning the sport into a tedious procession -- they have won the last seven constructors titles and Hamilton has won the last four world drivers titles.

Hamilton tackled the issue last season.

"It's not how F1 should be, but it is what it is right now and it has been like that in the past," he said.

"But it is not our fault these guys are good at their jobs."

For The Times' Rebecca Clancy, Hamilton's decision to move to first Switzerland and then Monaco -- in part to pay less tax -- was at the heart of any anti-Hamilton sentiment.

Another obstacle for some British F1 fans was the support of the once mighty McLaren team which powered him to his first title in 2008.

"Britons like underdogs," explained The Sun.

- 'Hypocrisy' -

For The Daily Telegraph, the 'Marmite' factor (love him or loathe him) stems from the fact that "Hamilton's tastes may not always sit perfectly with the traditional motor racing community".

Celebrity friends, extravagant fashion sense, 'bling' jewellery, plentiful tattoos, his spiritualism, reactions which sometimes appear over the top, the negative picture he paints of his hometown Stevenage, his Anglo-American accent -- all have been used as ammunition by his detractors.

His 'detached' manner also fires up his critics.

"It's not in the tradition of British sporting heroes to be so removed," wrote the Daily Mail's F1 reporter, John McEvoy.

For some, it was Hamilton's conversion to all things green and veganism in 2017 that jarred, coming from someone who criss-crosses the globe in a private jet -- since sold -- and spends much of his time behind the wheel of gas-guzzling F1 machines.

McEvoy wrote in the Mail in July: "The chief accusation against Hamilton is one of hypocrisy on several fronts.

"Many F1 insiders have heard enough of Hamilton's self-righteous preaching."

F1's first black driver has this season pressed for greater diversity in the paddock, a stance sparked by his vocal support for the Black Lives Matter movement. He spoke out about the killing of George Floyd when no one else in his sport would and won widespread support for his stance.

But some observers have noted that his tone can sometimes be perceived as preaching and "can rub people the wrong way".

His critics might not agree, but for many, like fellow British driver Lando Norris, Hamilton should be honoured, not criticised.

"There is only one other person in the whole world who has achieved what he has – and that's Michael Schumacher," the McLaren rookie said.

"He has led the way in many aspects – on the track, but also off it.

"A lot of athletes who have done such things in other sports have got knighthoods so I see no reason why he shouldn't.

"It's a good thing for kids who want to get into racing or who don't know much about racing to be inspired by him and, obviously, try to achieve similar things."

Lewis Hamilton: The world champion some find hard to like

Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer can make history Tuesday by clocking up a record 96th appearance in goal for Germany in a Nations League game against Spain.

Neuer equalled Sepp Maier's record of 95 appearances for a Germany goalkeeper, set in 1979, in Saturday's 3-1 win over Ukraine in Leipzig.

He can claim the record outright when Germany play Spain on Tuesday to decide their Nations League group.

"It's about time. It's 41 years since I set the record and I congratulate him," Maier, 76, told DPA last week.

At the age of 34, Neuer has given no hint of retirement.

Maier is tipping him to rack up a century of appearances for Germany with seven months to go before their opening match of the postponed Euro championships against world champions France in Munich.

Maier asked why Neuer should hang up his gloves: "There is nothing wrong with him."

The Bayern stopper proved he remains at his best by hoisting the Champions League trophy for the second time last August in Lisbon, having also won the 2013 final in London with the Bavarian giants.

Neuer made his international debut in 2009, became Germany's first-choice 'keeper the following year and has kept 41 clean sheets in his 95 appearances.

Over the last decade, he has reinterpreted the position like Russia's Lev Yashin did in the 1960s or France's 1998 World Cup winner Fabien Barthez achieved in his era -- Maier is as known for his dominant presence in goal as much as his ability to leave the penalty area and act as an extra defender.

- Outfield skills -

Such confidence is backed by a skillset which promoted Pep Guardiola when he was Bayern coach to consider using him as an outfield player.

"I remember when Pep Guardiola seriously considered the idea of putting him in midfield for a match. I could only dissuade Pep with great difficulty," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed in February.

In his youth, Neuer once sprinted out of his box to score with a spectacular bicycle kick in a junior match for his then club Schalke.

"As an outfield player, he could easily have played in the third division," insists Germany's goalkeeping coach Andreas Koepke.

"He anticipates well, his reflexes are remarkable and he has this unbelievably assured aura.

"All together, you can say he has raised the role of goalkeeper to a higher level."

Neuer has lifted every trophy available to him.

Since joining Bayern from hometown club Schalke in 2011, Gelsenkirchen-born Neuer has won eight Bundesliga titles.

He shut out the normally lethal partnership of Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain as Germany beat Argentina to win the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil.

It was a crowning moment for Neuer, who was voted the world's best goalkeeper four straight times between 2013-2016.

This year, he was voted Europe's best keeper for the fifth time.

He has captained Germany since 2016 and even with Barcelona star Marc-Andre ter Stegen in good form, Neuer has made the national Number One shirt his own.

And it was telling that when head coach Joachim Loew decided last year to retire most of his 2014 World Cup-winning veterans, only Toni Kroos and Neuer were retained.

Safe-hands Neuer set to make history as Germany's record 'keeper

Olympic chief Thomas Bach said Monday he is "very, very confident" that spectators will attend next year's Tokyo Olympics, as he kicked off a Japan trip to boost momentum for the pandemic-postponed Games.

Spiralling infections and new lockdowns around the world have renewed scepticism that the massive international event will be possible if the pandemic is not under control by opening day, now scheduled for July 23, 2021.

But organisers and Japanese officials have insisted that they can hold the event, and are drawing up a raft of coronavirus countermeasures intended to make the Games safe even if the pandemic is not over.

"We are putting really a huge tool box together in which we will put all the different measures we can imagine," Bach said, after meeting Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga for talks that began with the two masked men fist-bumping for the cameras.

"This makes us all very, very confident that we can have spectators in the Olympic stadia next year," added Bach, who heads the International Olympic Committee.

The Olympic chief also pledged that the IOC would "undertake great efforts" to make sure as many participants and spectators as possible are vaccinated before arriving in Japan, if a vaccine is available by next summer.

Bach, on his first trip to Tokyo since the Games were postponed in March, is hoping to convince athletes, Japanese citizens and Olympics sponsors that the Games can be held safely next year.

Polls show a majority of Japan's public believe the Games should be postponed further, or cancelled altogether.

And more than 60 percent of domestic sponsors have yet to commit to extending their contracts for another year, domestic media reported this weekend.

He told Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike the IOC was committed to ensuring "a safe environment for the participants of the Games, but also the Japanese people".

Koike said Bach's visit would "be an encouragement for the Japanese people, Tokyo residents, volunteers, children and above all athletes".

- 'Light at end of tunnel' -

There are glimmers of hope for organisers and Japanese officials, who have insisted a further delay is not on the table, and that cancellation is not being discussed.

News last week of positive results in a late-stage vaccine trial were welcomed by Tokyo 2020 officials as a "relief", though organisers cautioned that they will continue to prepare measures to hold the Games even without a vaccine.

And Tokyo this month successfully staged a four-nation gymnastics competition, its first international sporting event during the pandemic, hailed as proof the Games are possible.

In a possible preview of the restrictions Olympic athletes may face, gymnasts from the United States, China and Russia travelled on charter planes and were restricted to designated hotel floors, assigned buses and competition venues.

Athletes had to isolate themselves before coming to Japan, and test negative 72 hours before arrival. They were also tested every day after their arrival.

Spectators at the event had to wear face masks, sanitise their hands and undergo temperature checks, and were told not to shout or cheer.

A coronavirus taskforce of Japanese government officials and Olympic organisers has proposed measures including limiting athlete movement and banning cheering in venues. Final decisions on rules are not expected before next spring.

Bach said during a ceremony Monday he remained convinced Tokyo "continues to be the best prepared Olympic city".

Japan's government has maintained a steadfastly upbeat position on the prospects for the Games, with Suga reiterating Monday that they would go ahead and serve "as proof that mankind overcame the virus".

"Together we can make this Olympic Games and the Olympic flame the light at the end of the tunnel that we are all in during this coronavirus crisis," added Bach.

IOC's Bach 'very confident' Tokyo Olympics will have fans

Tottenham Hotspur striker Son Heung-min has been confined to his room when not training after six of his South Korea team-mates tested positive for Covid-19 on international duty in Austria, officials said Monday.

Although Son, 28, tested negative, he and the rest of the squad have been told to stay in their hotel rooms in Vienna, unless they are training.

Despite the positive cases, South Korea played Mexico on Saturday, losing 3-2, and are due to face Qatar on Tuesday, depending on the results of a new round of testing.

Kwon Chang-hoon, Lee Dong-jun, Hwang In-beom, Na Sang-ho, Kim Moon-hwan and goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo have all tested positive for the virus, the Korea Football Association confirmed to AFP.

The Qatar game will go ahead if at least 13 players are Covid-free in the latest test results, which are due later on Monday, an official said.

Several international footballers have tested positive for the virus in the last week, including Liverpool star Mohamed Salah and Republic of Ireland midfielder Alan Browne.

On Saturday, Son, the most prolific Asian player in Premier League history, set up Hwang Ui-jo's opener before Mexico ran away with it, scoring three goals in quick succession in the second half. Kwon Kyung-won reduced the deficit late on.

Sudden restriction to curb the outbreak of COVID-19 in South Australia has complicated preparations for India’s tour of Australia with Test captain Tim Paine reportedly forced into self-isolation and questioned being raised over his availability for the pink-ball Test in Adelaide.

Australian health and cricketing authorities on Monday said it was too early to predict what the sudden spike of virus cases around Adelaide would mean for India’s tour, which is set to kick-start on November 27.

Kohli-led Team India is scheduled to play three ODIs, as many T20s in Sydney and Canberra before travelling to Adelaide for the first Test on December 17-21.

Adelaide has become the epicentre of Australia’s effort to curb the pandemic with 17 cases linked to an outbreak in hotel confinement.

Australia virus cluster raises question marks over India cricket tour

Australian vice-captain Pat Cummins has said that Virat Kohli’s absence after the first Test match in Adelaide “make a bit of difference” but he was “unsure” if it could be the deciding factor in the much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Cummins further said that India always finds some incredible batsman, outside the team, waiting for his opportunity.

Kohli is set to miss the last three Tests of the four-match series after being granted paternity leave by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Kohli’s wife and Bollywood star Anushka Sharma are expecting their first child in early January.

Cummins, echoing his team-mate Nathan Lyon’s views, said that the players haven’t spoken about Kohli’s absence too much while adding he is not sure that it will be a deciding factor in the series.

"To be honest, as a captain, obviously he’ll be missed but the Indian cricket side always finds some incredible batsman, who outside the team, just waiting for an opportunity, so maybe that new opportunity will be the beginning of someone else’s career," he said in a media interaction on Monday, 16 November.

"It might make a bit of a difference. I am not sure it’s gonna be a deciding factor in the series but to be honest, us players haven’t spoken too much about it," Cummins said in a media interaction on Monday.

In the 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India created history as they defeated them 2-1, for the first time on their home soil. In the absence of Steve Smith and David Warner, India dominated all three departments of the game to successfully clinch the series Down Under.

"We have got a lot to prove. India played really well here a couple of years ago. We as an Aussie cricket team, and as long as I have grown up watching them play, pride ourselves on winning at home, especially Test matches. So to lose that one, I feel like we have to make amends this summer," said Cummins.
