The Indian team on Thursday announced its playing XI for the first Test of the four-match Border Gavaskar Trophy with a couple of surprising picks. The day-night Test at the Adelaide Oval is set to be played between India and Australia from December 17 in what promises to be a thrilling pink-ball Test. However, some of the fans were irked by the calls taken by the Indian team management after the playing XI for the Adelaide Test was announced.

Prithvi Shaw and Wriddhiman Saha were picked over Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant and fans were left scratching their heads over the calls. Shaw has been out of form for some time now. Even though it would be harsh on the youngster to mix formats and judge his form, Shaw’s form in the two warm-up matches against Australia A suggested that he is struggling with his technique and confidence. His form in IPL and knack of finding different ways of throwing his wickets away has been questioned by pundits and fans.

On the other hand, Shubman Gill looked classy in the warm-up matches and scored a scintillating half-century in the pink-ball warm-up match against Australia A. Gill’s technique has been praised by many and given the bouncier conditions in Australia, his comfort of playing the ball on the up was seen as an added advantage. However, he will have to wait for his Test cap and is expected to be in the playing XI once Virat Kohli leaves for India after the Adelaide Test.

Where are Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant? Fans question Team India playing XI

Australia and India renew their fierce rivalry in a four-Test series that begins with a day-night game in Adelaide on Thursday.

India won a Test series for the first time Down Under when the sides clashed two years ago and Australia are determined to regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Here are five things to watch out for in the highly anticipated series:

- Kohli's lone shot -

India captain Virat Kohli will be desperate to make a winning contribution in his only chance of a Test victory against Australia this series -- he has decided to return home after Adelaide to be with his Bollywood actress wife, Anushka Sharma, who is expecting their first child.

After India lost 2-1 in the recent one-dayers, Kohli showed his importance to the side during the Twenty20 series victory. And pundits, including Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar, believe his departure will leave a "void" in the batting line-up.

But other India veterans have suggested Kohli's absence could enable a new star to emerge in the side, which will be led by vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane once Kohli leaves.

- Smith returns -

Steve Smith is playing down calls for him to become Australia's captain again, insisting he is just "excited" to feature in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy clashes after missing out two years ago.

The prolific 31-year-old batsman was left powerless on the sidelines as India won their first series in Australia in 2018-19 while he and David Warner served out bans for ball-tampering.

Smith, who amassed 774 runs, including three centuries as Australia retained the Ashes in England last year, said "I will do what is best for the team" despite former players such as Adam Gilchrist calling for him to step up for a second crack at the captaincy.

- Hard day's night -

Australia start as overwhelming favourites in the opening Test having never been beaten in their seven day-night matches to date, while Virat Kohli's India play their first overseas game under lights after their maiden pink-ball outing in Kolkata last year against Bangladesh.

India long resisted twilight encounters, but Tendulkar told AFP he believed their players would be ready having played warm-up games and had intensive net sessions with the pink ball this week.

"They would have studied how the Adelaide pitch plays during day-night Test match and what is the time to accelerate and go for runs," he said, adding the first daylight session each day could be the time for batsmen to cash in.

- Pitch battles -

India's fast-bowling attack, led by Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, are ready to fight fire with fire in Australia's own den.

The pacey pair shared five wickets as they bundled out Australia A for 108 and signalled their intent to enjoy bowling on wickets Down Under that are renowned for providing extra pace and bounce.

Australia's three-pronged attack of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood "can surpass any era" of quicks, according to former paceman Brett Lee, but India coach Anil Kumble countered that his attack was their equal. "We probably match our fast bowling to their fast bowling," he said.

- Send in the crowds -

Australia and New Zealand have been the first countries to welcome back spectators to cricket since the pandemic -- the Adelaide Oval will be half full for the first Test while 30,000 should be allowed into the Melbourne Cricket Ground for Boxing Day.

Indian cricket chief Sourav Ganguly tweeted a picture of a full house as New Zealand played a Test last week against the West Indies at Basin Reserve, Wellington, writing "the game needs this".

Australia and India renew their fierce rivalry in a four-Test series that begins with a day-night game in Adelaide on Thursday. India won a Test series for the first time Down Under when the sides clashed two years ago and Australia are determined to regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Here are five things to watch out for in the highly anticipated series: - Kohli's lone shot - India captain Virat Kohli will be desperate to make a winning contribution in his only chance of a Test victory against Australia this series -- he has decided to return home after Adelaide to be with his Bollywood actress wife, Anushka Sharma, who is expecting their first child. - Smith returns - Steve Smith is playing down calls for him to become Australia's captain again, insisting he is just "excited" to feature in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy clashes after missing out two years ago. - Hard day's night - Australia start as overwhelming favourites in the opening Test having never been beaten in their seven day-night matches to date, while Virat Kohli's India play their first overseas game under lights after their maiden pink-ball outing in Kolkata last year against Bangladesh. - Pitch battles - India's fast-bowling attack, led by Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, are ready to fight fire with fire in Australia's own den. - Send in the crowds - Australia and New Zealand have been the first countries to welcome back spectators to cricket since the pandemic -- the Adelaide Oval will be half full for the first Test while 30,000 should be allowed into the Melbourne Cricket Ground for Boxing Day. Indian cricket chief Sourav Ganguly tweeted a picture of a full house as New Zealand played a Test last week against the West Indies at Basin Reserve, Wellington, writing "the game needs this". But players, with a lucrative series on the line, will be wary of sticking to coronavirus prevention protocols after other tours were disrupted this month. Pakistan were banned from training under quarantine in New Zealand after eight players tested positive. Kohli, Smith, pace and pink balls: what to watch when Australia face India

India will look to close the gap with table-toppers Australia in the ICC World Test Championship points table after their first pink-ball Test in Adelaide on Thursday.

India are in third place in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's Test Team Rankings with 114 rating points, whilst Australia top the rankings with 116.46 rating points. New Zealand follow closely in second with 116.37 rating points.

New Zealand are very close to reaching the ICC World Test Championship final in 2021 after securing back-to-back innings victories against the West Indies. India will feel the pressure as the race to the World Test Championship final heats up.

Australia and India will fight it out in a four-Test series as the hosts look to build on their narrow lead at the top of the table. If New Zealand overcome Pakistan 2-0 in the two-Test series which starts on 26 December, they will finish on 420 points from five series.

That will leave India needing five wins or four wins and three draws out of their last eight Tests, which include facing Australia away and hosting England for a four-Test series beginning in February 2021. Depending on how India's series against Australia goes and New Zealand's series against Pakistan goes, Australia could build their lead at number one or make way for New Zealand at the top.

Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton is hoping to have his future sorted by Christmas now that the Formula One season is over.

The most successful driver in the history of the sport and his Mercedes team, winner of both titles for an unprecedented seventh year in succession, still have to sit down and put pen to paper.

Hamilton is otherwise out of contract in a few weeks’ time.

The issue, even if it looks a foregone conclusion, is the biggest question of several remaining to be answered around the paddock.

“I plan to be here next year. I want to be here next year,” said Hamilton, 35, after finishing third in Sunday’s Abu Dhabi finale.

“Us, as a team, have more to do together and more to achieve both in the sport but even more outside the sport I think. I hope we can begin discussions this week and hopefully get it tied up before Christmas.”

The Briton had put off talks while he focused on the championship and then COVID-19 got in the way, with Hamilton testing positive in Bahrain and going into 10 days of quarantine.

Team boss Toto Wolff said there was no concern.

“It is going to happen. There is no reason it shouldn’t happen now,” he told reporters.

“We’ll have this conversation. We always said that we will do it after the title was won and then the virus delayed us for another 10 days, two weeks and now we just have to sit down, maybe virtually or maybe live.”

Championship runners-up Red Bull must decide who is going to partner Sunday’s race winner Max Verstappen next season with Thai racer Alexander Albon the incumbent but Mexican Sergio Perez in the frame.

Team boss Christian Horner said Albon’s performance in Abu Dhabi was probably his “strongest collective weekend of the season.

“That now gives us a complete set of information to go away and analyse and work out what we are going to do. It’s not going to take too long,” he added.

Williams’s new U.S.-based owners Dorilton Capital have to decide the team’s leadership structure after ending the season under acting principal Simon Roberts.

“We’re working on that right now but I can’t say anything about it this weekend,” Roberts said in Abu Dhabi. “Lots of discussion with Dorilton and when we’re ready we’ll be able to announce how we intend to move forward.”

Ferrari are meanwhile looking for a replacement for CEO Louis Camilleri after he announced his sudden retirement last week for personal reasons.

Haas have private business with Russian driver Nikita Mazepin after condemning the posting of a video on his social media of a female passenger being groped in the back of a car.

“It is still in my pending tray,” said team boss Guenther Steiner.

Formula One, under the new leadership of Stefano Domenicali from January, has also an April 25 slot on the 2021 calendar to fill and no shortage of candidates for a date originally set aside for Vietnam’s now-postponed debut.

Barcelona will hold presidential elections on January 24 after the managerial committee which has run the club since Josep Maria Bartomeu's October resignation agreed on the date.

"The Management Committee has agreed to call elections for the club's presidency and Board of Directors. Voting will be held on January 24, 2021," the body said in a statement.

The final approval comes after Barca reached an agreement with the Catalan regional government two weeks ago.

Coronavirus concerns have made this the first time the club's elections have been decentralised, with 10 voting locations for Barca's 110,000 members dotted around Spain.

They can cast their vote at Barca's Camp Nou as well as in the cities of Girona, Tarragona, Tortosa, Lleida, Madrid, Valencia, Seville, Palma and Andorran capital Andorra la Vella.

Among the seven candidates for election is former president Joan Laporta, who made his candidacy official two weeks ago.

Laporta was at the helm from 2003-2010, a period which included four La Liga titles and two Champions League triumphs.

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli said Monday the Italian champions were awaiting an answer from Argentina forward Paulo Dybala on a contract offer which would make him "among the 20 highest paid footballers in Europe".

Dybala scored his first Serie A goal in five months on Sunday during a 3-1 win over Genoa, telling journalists afterwards he had received no news on an extension to his current deal which expires in June 2022.

"So many things that aren't true have been said in relation to my contract," he said.

Agnelli insisted on Monday the 27-year-old, who suffered with coronavirus for six weeks earlier this year, "has already received an offer that places him among the 20 highest paid in Europe".

"We are calmly awaiting an answer," Agnelli said during an awards ceremony in Turin.

"The positive news is the return to scoring. Paulo had a tough time after the coronavirus, with a slow recovery.

"I was delighted to hear his declaration of love for Juve, it's reciprocated. We see Paulo as a future captain of the team. Already now he often wears the armband.

"He knows he has the offer, we are waiting serenely for an answer."

Dybala joined Juventus from Palermo in 2015 and has scored 97 goals for the club, winning eight major trophies, including five Serie A titles.

He has often been linked with a move away in recent months and was reportedly close to signing for Premier League sides Manchester United and Tottenham last year.

"We are also waiting for one (response) on the pitch, his ambition is to be among the top five (players) in the world, and we want to support him. He is still not there and he knows this," added Agnelli.

Lionel Messi to PSG? French club tell stores to be ready for blockbuster announcement

Mikel Arteta insists he is strong enough to cope with the pressure of Arsenal's dismal run as the Gunners boss dismissed their recent struggles as merely a "blip".

Arteta has faced calls for his sacking after Sunday's 1-0 home defeat against Burnley condemned Arsenal to their worst start to a season since 1974.

Arsenal have lost their last four home league games -- their worst sequence since 1959 -- and another defeat at the Emirates Stadium against in-form Southampton on Wednesday would pile further pressure on Arteta.

The Spaniard was given a vote of confidence by Arsenal technical director Edu on Monday, but Arteta admitted he had to shoulder the responsiblity for the team's five-match winless run in the league.

Adamant he still retains the backing of his players, Arteta told reporters on Tuesday: "My feeling is yes but this is a question for them obviously.

"When I see the reaction and the way they try, there's not one bit that worries me that they're not trying their best, that's for sure.

"And in terms of Edu and (Manchester City manager) Pep (Guardiola), they obviously showed their appreciation, because in good moments it's very easy.

"In difficult moments when you have people like them giving you support and two people that know very, very well what we've been through here, obviously it's much appreciated."

- 'Take the bullets' -

Languishing in 15th place after seven defeats in their first 12 league games, Arsenal are closer to the relegation zone than the top four.

Arteta is not concerned that Arsenal now face an unthinkable relegation battle and is confident that results will turn soon.

"I want to think that we are in a blip, losing football matches makes me believe that but we need to start to win," he said.

"But this is our reality right now and we have to face it and we have to face it being brave, fighting and no one giving up or anything.

Granit Xhaka's needless red card for grabbing Burnley's Ashley Westwood around the neck played a key role in Arsenal's latest flop.

Angry Arsenal fans have called for the volatile Swiss midfielder to be sold, but he retains Arteta's support for now.

Asked if Xhaka had apologised to Arteta and his team-mates, the Arsenal boss said the matter had been resolved "internally".

"He has had tough times here and he's not the only one, there's a lot of players that have had rocky moments.

"But what I can say about Granit is that his professionalism and his commitment with the club and with his team-mates is maximal.

"He knows and we all know that he had a moment where he's lost it and I know the reason why. But what I cannot do is just throw everything that he has done away because he's made a mistake."

Mikel Arteta insists he is strong enough to cope with the pressure of Arsenal's dismal run as the Gunners boss dismissed their recent struggles as merely a "blip".

"In difficult moments when you have people like them giving you support and two people that know very, very well what we've been through here, obviously it's much appreciated." - 'Take the bullets' - Languishing in 15th place after seven defeats in their first 12 league games, Arsenal are closer to the relegation zone than the top four. Arteta is not concerned that Arsenal now face an unthinkable relegation battle and is confident that results will turn soon. "I want to think that we are in a blip, losing football matches makes me believe that but we need to start to win," he said. "Because just dropping and dropping down the table is not the situation we want to be in. "But this is our reality right now and we have to face it and we have to face it being brave, fighting and no one giving up or anything. Former Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim apologised to a teammate Tuesday after an angry confrontation during a Twenty20 tournament.

The 33-year-old wicketkeeper turned on Nasum Ahmed after the two nearly collided while going for a catch.

Mushfiqur made the catch, but then shied as if to throw the ball at Nasum, or land a blow.

He faced a storm of social media criticism for his behaviour during the Bangabandhu Twenty20 Cup game between his Beximco Dhaka side and Fortune Barishal.

Bangladesh's most capped player was fined by the match referee after the game.

"First of all... I would like to apologise to all my fans and spectators regarding the incident that happened yesterday," Mushfiqur wrote on his Facebook page.

"I have already apologised after the game to my fellow team-mate Nasum.

"I am a human being above all and the gesture that I have shown was not acceptable. I promise it won't be repeated."

The post was accompanied by a photo of Mushfiq and Nasum.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board fined Mushfiqur a quarter of his match fee.

"We considered his track record, which is good,” said match referee Roqibul Hasan, "but he was warned that if the act is repeated he would be in trouble,".

Beximco Dhaka won the game by nine runs to qualify for the December 18 final of the tournament.

Sticking to the original plan before the Tokyo Olympics was postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisers on Tuesday said that the Olympic flame will still visit Japan’s 47 prefectures during the traditional torch relay starting on March 25.

The torch relay was scheduled to commence in March 2020 but the International Olympic Committee and the Japanese government took the unprecedented decision to postpone the Games.

With concerns surrounding the rising cases in Japan and COVID-19 restrictions in the country, organisers on Tuesday announced that the 121-day tour, which starts in Fukushima and ends in Tokyo’s National Stadium during the Games opening ceremony on July 23, will go ahead as scheduled.

The announcement by the organisers came after a poll by NHK broadcaster showed a third of Japanese locals wanting the Tokyo Games to be scrapped amid fears that foreign visitors may cause a further spike in coronavirus cases.

"We want to make sure that everyone's health is secure -- the spectators, the torchbearers, the officials and the citizens in the local areas," said Tokyo Games Vice-Director General Yukihiko Nunomura.

"We want the runners to smile and we want the spectators to smile as they welcome the torch. We want to generate excitement so that people really feel that the Tokyo Olympics are coming."

With Japan battling the third wave of infections, the NHK poll, conducted from December 11-13, showed 32 per cent of respondents wanting the Tokyo Olympics to be cancelled entirely.

Only 27% said they should go ahead as scheduled and 31% favoured another delay.

To mark 100 days until the start of the tour, Tokyo Skytree, the tallest tower in the world was illuminated on Tuesday.

Organisers said the full relay route would be announced in February.

Former Australian captain Allan Border has acknowledged the contribution of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in breaking the ice between Indian and Australian players while cooling down the tempers that used to flare on the pitch.

Australia and India are set to take on each other in a four-match Test series starting Thursday at the Adelaide Oval. Border, while speaking during a media interaction, said that there was a clash of cultures earlier but the rivalry was always competitive while adding that IPL ended that barrier between players.

“I think Sunny (Sunil Gavaskar) talked about (in a media article) that there was always a little bit of clash, clash of cultures between Australians and Indians. We play the game a certain way, we are brought up to play the game in an aggressive manner. We use swear words a lot in our natural conversation without meaning anything by it. Whereas in India, sometimes the players used to take offence with the way we were,” Border said.

“That clash of cultures has been addressed in recent times because of the IPL. Because you have got Australians and South Africans and Indians, the different cultures playing in one franchise you get to know each other a lot better. The appreciation is what makes different people tick when you are in the same dressing room compared to opposing dressing rooms. I think that has helped the Indians and Australians and the way, the mannerisms out in the field. But don’t mistake the smiling assassins (Tim Paine’s Australians). They will be friendly alright but they will be keen to be the Australian boys because they really rate this series very highly,” added Border.

The former Australian admitted that Virat Kohli perfectly represents the changing face of Indian cricket, backing Greg Chappell’s comments of Kohli being the most Australian non-Australian. Border said Kohli’s involvement in the game sets him apart from his peers and added that he likes Kohli’s passion on the field.

“We just love the way he plays cricket. You can see in his body language out on the ground. He lives and breathes every minute. He is out there, he just loves it. There is a bit more chat out on the ground. He talks to his own players and opposition. He is in the contest more so than the other Indian players we have seen in the past,” said Border before describing the new Indian cricketer.

“What we talk in this country is about the new Indian cricketer. He has got tattoes. Married to a Bollywood actress. He is a very feisty competitor and not to say that other Indians aren’t like that. But he just wears his heart on the sleeve. I suppose he tends to play cricket like some of us tend to. He is very much liked in these shores. He is a seriously good player — that is obviously there, but I like that passion he brings to the game,” added Border.

Warne vs Tendulkar, 'Monkeygate': 5 classic Australia vs India encounters

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has picked his Aussie playing XI for the Adelaide Test against India, starting from December 17. With Australia struggling to field their best XI due to injuries, Ponting has come up with a strong yet interesting playing XI with a surprise pick to replace the injured David Warner.

Ponting was known for his aggressive captaincy and brave calls on the field and that reflects on the Australian playing XI he picked for the Adelaide Test against India. The former Aussie skipper has backed out-of-form Joe Burns to open the innings while coming up with the interesting suggestion to pick Matthew Wade as his partner.

Continuing his team, Ponting picked the likes of Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith at number three and four respectively before naming Travis Head, Cameron Green (if passed fit) and skipper Tim Paine. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon complete Ponting’s Australia XI for Adelaide Test.

“I’ll have a lot of messages and suggestions coming my way that he (Burns) hasn’t scored enough runs to stay in the side, but I’m keeping him in there. 40 in his last Test innings, he’s made four-Test match hundreds, averages almost 40 – I’m sticking with him and showing some faith,” Ponting told 7Cricket.

Ponting added, "What I am doing is moving Matthew Wade up to the top of the order. It gives a left-hand, right-hand combination. We saw last time India were out here, when we had two left-handers in our top order, the Indian bowling attack absolutely dominated the two lefties. I know I’ll cause a bit of a stir here, but that’s the way I’d go," stated the former right-handed batsman.

Giving a major headache to already injury-hit Australian squad, Steve Smith on Tuesday missed the major batting session ahead of the first Test of the four-match Border-Gavaskar series in Adelaide against India. Smith walked off the field after completing a couple of stretching and running drills and headed to the dressing room in some discomfort.

While the other Australian batsmen enjoyed a good batting session ahead of the series opener, Smith walked off to the dressing room with physiotherapist David Beakley to receive a “back rub” after suffering from lower-back soreness. The Aussie ace would not be training on Tuesday.

However, he is not believed to be in doubt for the Adelaide test and is expected to be back in the nets session tomorrow.

Smith has been among the runs since returning back from the one-year ban. He had defied all the odds to pile mammoth runs in the Ashes 2019 and has since carried on scoring runs in both red-ball and white-ball cricket.

In the recently concluded ODI and T20I series against India, Smith looked in great touch and is expected to be the backbone of the Aussie batting unit in the much-awaited Test series against India. He had scored consecutive 62-ball centuries in ODIs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Smith had revealed that second of those centuries came after he spent the morning of the match suffering from nausea and dizziness – for which he was treated hours before play started.

Australia are already without the likes of David Warner, Will Pucovski, Sean Abbott due to injuries.

There are further doubts over the participation of Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc with the latter having just joined the squad after a family illness.

TRENDING: WATCH: Mushfiqur Rahim loses cool, almost hits teammate during Bangabandhu T20 Cup Smith had revealed that second of those centuries came after he spent the morning of the match suffering from nausea and dizziness – for which he was treated hours before play started. Australia are already without the likes of David Warner, Will Pucovski, Sean Abbott due to injuries. There are further doubts over the participation of Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc with the latter having just joined the squad after a family illness.

Four times Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel bowed out of Ferrari on Sunday with one last, slightly wobbly, song of thanks over the radio in Italian and a large trophy as a parting gift.

The German, who had hoped to emulate boyhood hero and Ferrari great Michael Schumacher when he arrived at Maranello, finished 14th in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and one place behind team mate Charles Leclerc.

“Grazie Seb,” was written on a pit board as the team assembled for a group photo accompanied by a large Champions League-style trophy celebrating Vettel’s 14 wins in six years in Italy.

Vettel, who is joining Aston Martin (the renamed Racing Point) next season, ranks third on the list of Ferrari’s all-time winners and is the most successful not to win a championship with them.

He also notched up 12 poles and 55 podiums for the Italian team as well as 14 fastest laps.

“It was an emotional day with the mechanics waving goodbye on the grid. I felt there was a different dynamic and tension there,” the German, who won his titles with Red Bull from 2010-13, told reporters.

“I am sad for the guys, I will miss them but also happy to embark on a new journey.”

After the race he gave a farewell rendition of ‘Azzurro’, a popular 1960s song by Adriano Celentano, on his slowing down lap.

“Every time I was really excited for some reason (at Ferrari) I started to sing and I think it was a nice way for one last time to sing again,” he said.

“I changed the lyrics so I hope I don’t get in trouble with copyright. I think it was a good way to express my gratitude for the team.”

Vettel said the trophy took him by surprise: “I’ve never finished P14 before and got a trophy so it was definitely a nice memory.”

He added that he had no regrets, but would miss the many friends he had made.

“I have learned so much from this team and they have given me so much. I am very grateful for that,” he said.

The pandemic-hit 2020 season, with Ferrari slumping to sixth overall and their worst performance in 40 years, was a poor reflection on the great times they had together, he added.

“I think nothing about today should get mentioned,” said the 33-year-old, whose lows have been more frequent than the highs of late.

“I think it was quite a bad and poor race from us but I enjoyed it.”

Lewis Hamilton wrapped up the Formula One season in Abu Dhabi on Sunday with his 165th podium finish and the after-effects of COVID-19 making themselves felt on his aching body.

Lewis Hamilton wrapped up the Formula One season in Abu Dhabi on Sunday with his 165th podium finish and the after-effects of COVID-19 making themselves felt on his aching body. The seven-times world champion, who missed last weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain after contracting the new coronavirus, said the race had been a physical challenge and he was glad it was over. “Considering the past couple of weeks I’ve had I’m really generally happy with the weekend,” the Mercedes driver, who clinched his record-equalling seventh title in Turkey last month, told reporters. “That was a really hard race for me, physically. All year, physically I have been fine but today I definitely wasn’t. So, I’m just glad it’s over.” Hamilton finished third in a processional race, behind second-placed team mate Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull’s winner Max Verstappen. The most successful driver in the history of the sport had said on arrival in Abu Dhabi that he was not 100%, still feeling the effects of the virus in his lungs. Asked whether that had impacted on the race, Hamilton said it had. “Massively. I don’t think I’ve ever been so blown. My body is not feeling great,” he said. “But look on the bright side: I made it through and you know, I didn’t think any time last week I would be here so I am truly grateful for my health and to be alive. “Looking forward to recovering over the next period of time we have and getting back into training and get my body back to where I know it should be.” Third place meant Hamilton, who also started third, was unable to add to the 11 wins he has celebrated this season -- equalling the most he has ever won in a single year.

Hurting Hamilton wraps up the season with pain and a podium

Tottenham and Liverpool remain tied at the top of the Premier League after both were held to 1-1 draws at Crystal Palace and Fulham respectively, while Pierre-Emerick Aubamyeng's own goal condemned Arsenal to another shocking home defeat, going down 1-0 to Burnley on Sunday.

Leicester took advantage of slip ups by the top two to close to within one point of the leaders as James Maddison scored twice in a 3-0 rout over Brighton and Southampton are up to fourth as they also comfortably saw off Sheffield United 3-0.

Liverpool and Tottenham face each other at Anfield on Wednesday and, after Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United failed to win on Saturday, they both missed the chance to open up a gap at the top in the title race.

The champions needed a Mohamed Salah penalty 11 minutes from time to avoid an embarrassing defeat at Fulham after a dreadful first-half performance left Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp seething on the touchline.

"We needed half an hour to get our feet in the game, that's why I shouted a bit at them," said Klopp.

"I think in the first half an hour we could have lost the game, in the last 60 minutes we should have won it. In the end we get a point and that's it."

Bobby DeCordova-Reid's thunderous finish into the far corner to take the lead was no more than Scott Parker's side deserved as the returning Alisson Becker kept Liverpool in the game before the break.

Liverpool dominated the second-half to pin Fulham back, but needed a penalty to salvage a point when Aboubakar Kamara was penalised for handling Georginio Wijnaldum's free-kick.

Salah slammed the penalty low and just beyond the grasp of Alphonse Areola, but Fulham comfortably saw out the final 10 minutes to the delight of 2,000 fans at Craven Cottage.

- Tottenham pegged back -

Palace could also count on the return of fans to Selhurst Park for the first time in nine months to inspire a second-half fightback against Tottenham.

Harry Kane opened the scoring thanks to a goalkeeping howler from Vicente Guaita as he misjudged the England captain's long-range effort.

Spurs then sat on their lead and failed to hold out for a sixth consecutive Premier League clean sheet when Hugo Lloris failed to hold Eberechi Eze's free-kick and Jeffrey Schlupp swept home the rebound.

"We lost two points," said Spurs coach Jose Mourinho. "From 45 to 75 minutes we couldn't play or build from the back and we made lots of mistakes."

Guaita then redeemed himself with a pair of outstanding saves to deny Kane and Eric Dier as Spurs suddenly found their attacking thrust again after the equaliser.

At the other end of the table, Arsenal are now just five points above the relegation zone after a self-inflicted defeat to Burnley.

Granit Xhaka's needless red card for grabbing Ashley Westwood by the throat turned the game in Burnley's favour before Aubameyang flicked Westwood's corner into his own net 17 minutes from time.

"Again we throw the game away with a silly red card," said Arteta, who described Nicolas Pepe's sending-off against Leeds last month as "unacceptable."

"It's the same word (unacceptable) and in these conditions, where we are not winning football matches, even worse."

The Gunners failed to score from open play for the seventh time in eight games as Burnley held on for their first ever win over Arsenal in the Premier League to move out of the relegation zone.

- Leicester, Southampton impress

Leicester edged out Southampton for the performance of the weekend as the Foxes blew Brighton away inside 45 minutes at the King Power.

Maddison was back to his best after a series of injury problems with two brilliant finishes either side of Jamie Vardy's 12th goal of the season.

Southampton are just two points off the top and face troubled Arsenal next as goals from Che Adams, Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond wrapped up their fifth victory in the last seven games.

"I don't see any reason why we shouldn't continue what we're doing at this moment," said Southampton manager Ralph Hassenhuttl."

Bottom of the table United remain without a win this season, having lost 11 of their 12 games to leave them staring relegation in the face.

Leaders Tottenham, Liverpool held, Arsenal beaten by Burnley

Lionel Messi saved Barcelona from another embarrassing result by scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over lowly Levante, while Real Sociedad returned top of La Liga on Sunday.

Messi struck with 14 minutes remaining of a lacklustre display from Barca at the Camp Nou which will do little to ease fan fears following their 3-0 hammering at the hands of Juventus midweek.

Ronald Koeman's side are still way off the pace in the title race, nine points behind Sociedad who reclaimed first place despite only drawing 1-1 with Eibar.

Barcelona do however have two games in hand on the Basque outfit.

Atletico are level on 26 points with Sociedad and also have two games in hand while Real Madrid are now just three points behind the leaders having played one less after beating their local rivals 2-0 on Saturday.

Villarreal are four points off the lead in fourth after drawing 1-1 at Real Betis, who are one point behind Barca in ninth.

"The team is working well, they gave the maximum," said Koeman.

"We still lack a little confidence in ourselves, in our game, but we had a lot of chances, and I have nothing to say about the attitude of the players in this match."

Barca managed to force several saves from Aitor Fernandez, with the Levante goalkeeper doing particularly well to push away a stinging shot from Martin Braithwaite in the 16th minute and Antoine Griezmann's header five minutes later.

However the best chance of the opening period fell to Jorge de Frutos in the 12th minute, the Spaniard somehow shooting straight at Marc-Andre ter Stegen after the ball broke kindly for him right in front of goal.

- Messi saves day -

Barca continued to dominate possession in the second half but if anything looked less threatening, with Fernandez being called into action largely for shots that were hit straight at him.

However with Levante looking more comfortable than a side of their level should at the Camp Nou, Messi saved his team with a clinical finish off the post after collecting Frenkie de Jong's pass.

It was hardly the sort of display to honour Sergio Busquets' 593rd appearance for the club, which takes him level at fourth of all time for matches played for Barca alongside Carles Puyol.

However the three points are a boost ahead of the visit of Sociedad on Wednesday, which is then followed up by another home clash with Valencia on Saturday.

Earlier Ander Barrenetxea gave Real Sociedad the lead in San Sebastian with a thumping strike in the 20th minute, but Sergi Enrich turned home with 25 minutes remaining to send his team 10th on 15 points.

Sociedad would have had a bigger gap between them and Atletico had Igor Zubeldia's 80th-minute tap-in not been ruled out by VAR for an extremely tight offside.

Sunday's draw was Sociedad's sixth in as many games in all competitions, and came after another 1-1 draw at Napoli on Thursday which saw them squeeze into the last 32 of the Europa League.

Granada won 1-0 at Elche in Sunday's other match, a win that keeps them one point ahead of Barcelona.

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his 100th game for Juventus with a pair of penalties in a 3-1 success over Genoa on Sunday, as the champions closed the gap on Serie A leaders AC Milan who were held at home against Parma.

French defender Theo Hernandez's brace rescued a point at the death for AC Milan who came from two goals down to draw 2-2 in the San Siro.

Milan's lead on second-placed Inter was cut to three points after Antonio Conte's side staged a 3-1 comeback win at Cagliari.

Napoli, in third, are a further point adrift after beating Sampdoria 2-1, equal on points with nine-time reigning champions Juventus.

Playing without injured top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Milan had looked set for their first league defeat this season.

Hakan Calhanoglu rattled the woodwork three times with Brahim Diaz also hitting the post for the hosts before Hernani put Parma ahead after quarter of an hour.

The Brazilian midfielder then set up Jasmin Kurtic for the second after 56 minutes.

But two minutes later Hernandez headed in off a Calhanoglu corner with the French defender adding a second in injury time off a rebound.

"It wasn't the best night but we had the quality to bring home an important draw which boosts our self-esteem," said coach Stefano Pioli.

"While Ibra gives us a lot of presence, we did well even without him. We have shown strength, especially psychologically, it's a step forward."

Chasing a first league title since 2011, Milan are unbeaten in the first 11 matches of a Serie A season since the 2003/2004, when they also won the 'Scudetto'.

In Genoa, Juventus were boosted after their 3-0 Champions League win in Barcelona, with Paulo Dybala getting his first goal this season.

Stefano Sturaro levelled for the hosts after an hour.

But Nicolo Rovella's foul on Juan Cuadrado allowed Ronaldo to slot in his first penalty after 78 minutes with the second coming a minute from time after goalkeeper Mattia Perin brought down Alvaro Morata.

Genoa sink to second from bottom of the league.

Former Cagliari player Nicolo Barella volleyed in the equaliser after 77 minutes with Danilo D'Ambrosio coming off the bench to immediately nod in a second with six minutes to go.

Napoli got their first win in their newly named Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, renamed after the Argentina legend who led the club to their only league titles in 1987 and 1990 and the UEFA Cup in 1989.

Jakub Jankto put Sampdoria ahead in the 20th minute, but Hirving Lozano came off the bench in the second half to spark a Napoli revival.

Lozano got his head to a Dries Mertens cross seven minutes after the break with the Mexican international then crossing for Andrea Petagna to nod in the winner with 22 minutes remaining.

Roma got back to winning ways with an emphatic 5-1 victory at Bologna.

All six goals came in the first half at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara.

With cricket getting back to its feet post the COVID-19-enforced break, Bangladesh is currently hosting the Bangabandhu T20 Cup. After 20 matches, four teams out of five, qualified for the playoffs with Beximco Dhaka and Fortune Barishal locking horns in the eliminator on Monday in Dhaka.

Even though the Mushfiqur Rahim-led Dhaka won the match by nine wickets, the Bangladesh wicket-keeper was in the limelight for wrong reasons as he lost his cool at his teammate Nasum Ahmed. The controversial incident took place in the 17th over when Barishal needed 45 runs off 19 deliveries.

With Afif Hossain looking in good touch, the southpaw tried to bag a boundary off the final delivery of the over. However, he miscued his stroke and lobbed the ball in the air. Mushfiqur Rahim ran for the catch along with the fine-leg fielder Nasum Ahmed. There seemed to be a bit of miscommunication as the duo almost collided but Mushfiqur managed to get hold of the ball.

Cricket season ended for the West Indies with an innings and 12-run defeat to New Zealand in the second Test on Monday. The West Indies skipper Jason Holder, after the crushing series defeat, feels that it will be a much-needed break for some of the players who have suffered a tough year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the win, New Zealand moved closer to the numero uno spot in Test cricket for the first time in their history. Praising every individual who played a part in bringing cricket back to the ground, Holder said it has been a tough year for many including him personally as he added that he hasn’t been home for six months.

"Man, it's tough. It was a tough year. Credit to every individual who would have sacrificed their health, and the risk of travelling around the world in this pandemic," ESPNcricinfo quoted Holder as saying.
The Windies all-rounder also touched upon the challenges of playing in the bio-secure bubbles. He said that being isolated into a room is one of the toughest things a person can go through.

With pay-cuts in place due to disruption in cricket calendar, some of the players have been playing non-stop cricket in different T20 tournaments taking place in different parts of the world besides playing the international bilateral series as well.

Notably, the West Indies were one of the first two resume cricket after COVID-19-enforced break as the Caribbean outfit travelled to the United Kingdom to play a three-match Test series against England.

"It has been a tough year. Not just for the team but I know for me personally it has been tough. I haven't seen home in six months now. I have been going non-stop. We have had pay cuts. It is a situation where you are still looking to make a living, still looking to make use of every opportunity you get. But, having said that, going from bubble to bubble and being isolated into a room -- sometimes, as I have said before, the room just gets smaller and smaller by the second," Holder explained.

"I know a few of the guys have got tired minds. We've been on the road for a little while. It would be good for the guys to get home for Christmas, spend some time with their families; hopefully, some of them get there in time for Christmas, because I think you've got to do a quarantine, some players have to do a quarantine going back home. It will be a much-needed rest for some players to just refresh and come back," he added.

Holder, despite staying six months away from his family, will head over to Australia to participate in the ongoing Big Bash League for Sydney Sixers in what will be a three-game stint for the Windies all-rounder. He will then move to Bangladesh with the West Indies squad in January.

"We have got a short turnaround. I head over to the Big Bash after this and then we've got a tour of Bangladesh in early January. Not much time in between, but we will see how it goes. I don't know [when I will be home next]. At this point, I really don't know. But I am still enjoying it. Still enjoying moving around. I am trying to make use of every opportunity I get and hope it works out for me," Holder said.

In what comes as another blow to the Australian cricket team, pace bowler Sean Abbott has been ruled out of the first Test against India, scheduled to be played in Adelaide from Thursday, due to calf injury. All-rounder Moises Henriques has been added to the Australian squad, after recovering from a mild hamstring strain.

Abbott will continue to recover in Sydney and join the Aussie squad before the second Test in Melbourne starting on December 26.

Abbott was expected to be part of the day-night Test if Mitchell Starc, who has been away from the squad due to family illness, was not considered match fit.

Abbott is the third casualty for the Australian side with openers David Warner and Will Pucovski both unavailable for the Adelaide Test.

Earlier, in-form all-rounder, Cameron Green gave a major scare to the Aussie side after he was stuck on the head while bowling in an Australia ‘A’ match against India last week.

Notably, Henriques was not part of the Australia ‘A’ matches due to hamstring strain after returning to the national team in the limited over series against India.

Meanwhile, Green is likely to be part of the Adelaide Test and medical experts are continuing to monitor the youngster before the much-awaited match.

With Warner and Pucovski out with injuries and Joe Burns going through a poor run of form, it would be interesting to see what combination Australian team picks for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener.

Australian head coach Justin Langer was spotted taking a look at the Adelaide pitch on Sunday as the former Aussie opener shadow batted a bit to get into the groove of the Test series.

The pink-ball Test will be the first such match between Australia and India.
