Pakistan captain Babar Azam has advanced one place to reach second position in the ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings in Wednesday’s weekly update based on performances in the last two games of their four-match series against South Africa.

Babar’s superlative form had helped him replace India captain Virat Kohli at the top of the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings last week and this week’s update sees him make a strong 47-point surge to overtake Australia’s Aaron Finch in the T20I rankings after scoring 122 in the third match.

Though Babar is still 48 points adrift of top-ranked Dawid Malan of England, a three-match series against Zimbabwe from Wednesday presents the 26-year-old with another opportunity to move towards the top spot, which he had occupied till November last year.

Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad are set to lock horns at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday as the action in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 continues. While Punjab Kings got off to a winning start in IPL 2021, they have ended up losing their last two matches in the tournament. For Sunrisers Hyderabad, they are yet to win a match in the T20 tournament.

Punjab Kings have a steady playing XI but failing to capitalize on good starts have been a major issue with the KL Rahul-led outfit. Their overseas pacers have been on the expensive side as well, which is hurting the team even more. However, PBKS would be looking to start afresh on Wednesday.

Six ways to say goodbye: How English clubs announced Super League pull-outs

NBA chief Adam Silver applauded the outcome of the Derek Chauvin murder trial on Tuesday, saying justice had been served against the former police officer found guilty of killing unarmed Black man George Floyd.

In a joint statement with the National Basketball Players Association executive director Michele Roberts, the NBA chief said the league would continue to campaign for criminal justice and police reforms.

"George Floyd's murder was a flash point for how we look at race and justice in our country, and we are pleased that justice appears to have beens served," Silver and Roberts said.

"But we also recognize that there is much work to be done with the National Basketball Association and the National Basketball Players Association, together with our newly formed Social Justice Coalition, will redouble our efforts to advocate for meaningful change in the areas of criminal justice and policing," they added.

NBA players joined nationwide protests against Floyd's killing in Minneapolis in May last year, and the league later encouraged players to share social justice messages when the pandemic-interrupted season resumed.

The words "Black Lives Matter" were painted prominently on courts at games staged in the NBA's bubble in Orlando.

Meanwhile, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx WNBA teams both praised Tuesday's verdict in a joint statement.

"One year ago, George Floyd was murdered, causing unimaginable pain and trauma for his family, the Minneapolis community, and communities across the nation," the teams said.

"We are hopeful that today's decision will serve as a step forward, but it does not ease the physical and emotional pain that continues in an environment where systemic racism exists."

'Justice served': NBA, players praise Chauvin guilty verdict

Tokyo Olympics organisers may put off an announcement on how many fans can attend until June, media reported Wednesday, as surging coronavirus infections play havoc with preparations.

Organisers have already barred overseas fans from the pandemic-delayed Games, and were expected to announce an upper limit on domestic spectators sometime in April.

But Japanese reports said the decision was now likely in June, possibly just a month before the Games open on July 23. The move would further delay ticket sales, which were put on hold when the Olympics were postponed last year.

The organising committee said the timing of the decision needed to stay "flexible" as the coronavirus situation develops.

"We remain in discussions with the IOC and IPC (International Olympic Committee and International Paralympic Committee) and intend to reach a consensus on the direction to take," a Tokyo 2020 statement added.

Athletes may also face daily virus testing, rather than once every four days as originally planned, separate reports said.

Japan's sharp rise in cases is causing further disruption for the postponed Games, with a number of test events delayed, cancelled or moved abroad.

In the latest upheaval, an artistic swimming qualifying competition has been moved from Japan, organisers said, and spectators will reportedly be barred from an athletics event at the main Olympic stadium.

The artistic swimming qualifier was originally set to take place in Tokyo in March before being rescheduled to May 1-4, but will now be held in June at "a location to be defined, outside Japan", organisers said late Tuesday.

World swimming governing body FINA said in a statement that "challenges related to the international calendar and the necessary adaptation of the venue to the Olympic Games operations" were behind the decision.

FINA has already rescheduled a Diving World Cup event in Tokyo and moved a marathon swimming Olympic qualifier from Japan to Portugal, amid reported dissatisfaction over virus countermeasures.

Japanese media said Wednesday that an athletics test event -- which will double as a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet and feature athletes from overseas -- will be held without spectators.

Organisers were set to allow 20,000 fans into the May 9 meet, according to Kyodo news agency, but tougher restrictions imposed by the Tokyo city government this month have forced a rethink.

Virus restrictions are expected to be tightened further this week, with Tokyo and several other regions seeking a state of emergency to tackle rising cases.

Despite the situation, Olympic organisers and local officials insist the Games can be held safely. They will unveil updated virus rulebooks later this month.

From the creation of the first continental club cups in the 1950s to the announcement of a private Super League, European football has been torn between its traditions and the big clubs' desire for more money.

1955: the launch as a private super league

While there had been cross-border club competitions, such as the pre-war Mitropa Cup, French newspaper L'Equipe kicked off modern European club competition when it suggested the creation of a Champion Clubs' Cup.

UEFA, the governing body of European football, initially wanted nothing to do with it and were prepared to let the clubs get on with it.

Global governing body FIFA, however, concerned that such a competition would flourish outside its official structures, pushed UEFA to jump on the bandwagon and give its approval.

The European Cup started in the 1955-56 season with clubs from 15 nations and the Saarland, a French protectorate in Germany. The entries did not include a club from England, which turned its nose up at the idea and refused to enter champions Chelsea.

Only seven of the 16 club were reigning national champions.

Some, such as Dutch champions Holland Sport and Scottish champions Aberdeen refused to take part and were replaced by other clubs from their leagues.

In some countries, the national champions were passed over in favour of more famous or better-connected clubs.

The following year, UEFA required each country to send its national champion.

The Champions Cup was quickly joined by the Intercity Fairs Cup, in which cities at first entered combined teams. It became the first European competition with more entries for the big countries as it evolved into the UEFA Cup and then the Europa League.

The Cup Winners Cup was founded in 1960 and lasted until 1999.

1991: More matches

The big clubs first got their way in the early 1990s.

For 1991-1992, UEFA agreed to introduce group stages to guarantee more matches.

In that season, after two knockout rounds, the last eight competed in two groups of four, with the winners, Barcelona and Sampdoria, qualifying for the final.

The following season, the competition was rebranded the Champions League.

From 1994-1995, the group stage was moved to the beginning of the tournament.

1997: More clubs

The big clubs scored a second victory in 1997 when runners up from nine of the biggest leagues were allowed to enter.

In 1999, up to four clubs were allowed from each country - in the first season Italy, Germany and Spain were the beneficiaries - and a second group phase was introduced for the round of 16.

That increased the number of matches and, therefore, revenue. It also reduced the risk of giant-killing upsets, but the predictability and meaningless matches late in the group stages also drained much of the drama.

The second group phase was abandoned in the 2002-2003 season but the first group phase was kept to weed out the real minnows while guaranteeing qualifiers at least six games.

2020: The 'Super' League

Despite the tremendous popularity of the competition, the big clubs forever want more.

Their solution is a closed or semi-closed European league, the 'Super League'.

The powerful European Club Association, dominated by the biggest clubs, was the first to brandish the threat.

That pressure prompted UEFA to come up with the proposed Champions League reform this week, with an initial phase of 36 clubs each playing 10 matches against different opponents.

While the majority of the ECA's 200 or so member and associate clubs are happy with the plan, 12, six from England and three each from Spain and Italy, have threatened to secede.

From the creation of the first continental club cups in the 1950s to the announcement of a private Super League, European football has been torn between its traditions and the big clubs' desire for more money.

From the creation of the first continental club cups in the 1950s to the announcement of a private Super League, European football has been torn between its traditions and the big clubs' desire for more money. 1955: the launch as a private super league While there had been cross-border club competitions, such as the pre-war Mitropa Cup, French newspaper L'Equipe kicked off modern European club competition when it suggested the creation of a Champion Clubs' Cup. The Cup Winners Cup was founded in 1960 and lasted until 1999. 1991: More matches The big clubs first got their way in the early 1990s. 1997: More clubs The big clubs scored a second victory in 1997 when runners up from nine of the biggest leagues were allowed to enter. 2020: The 'Super' League Despite the tremendous popularity of the competition, the big clubs forever want more. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on Tuesday criticised the closed format of the breakaway Super League as he said it is “not sport” if success is guaranteed.

City are one of 12 clubs to have signed up to the much-talked-about European Super League, alongside Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan.

The Super League would guarantee a sport for 15 founding members every season while removing the uncertainty of qualification and the risks to the revenue. However, it has come under severe scrutiny as experts say it is against the integrity of the sport.

IPL 2021: When will Hardik Pandya bowl again? Mumbai Indians' Mahela Jayawardene responds

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni on Monday admitted that his slow knock in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 match against Rajasthan Royals in Mumbai could have cost his side the game on another day. Dhoni played a cautious knock of 18 off 17 as the former Indian captain struggled to time the ball to perfection. He could manage only two boundaries and look adrift of his natural game.

"Glad we scored 180, I thought we could have got more. The first six balls I played could have cost us in another game," Dhoni told host broadcaster Star Sports.

Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja spun a web around the RR batters as they scalped five wickets among themselves to defend the 188-run target. With the win, CSK jump to second place in the IPL 2021 points table.

Earlier, Faf du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu scored at a firing rate before Dwayne Bravo's 20 off 8 balls came handy in the death overs. For CSK, Faf top-scored with an innings of 33 while for Rajasthan Royals, Chetan Sakariya returned with three wickets.

However, CSK managed to post 188 after a late blitz by Dwayne Bravo and went on to win the match by an impressive 45-run margin. "Glad we scored 180, I thought we could have got more. The first six balls I played could have cost us in another game," Dhoni told host broadcaster Star Sports. For most people the lockdown year 2020, was all about adjusting to a new normal, but for 22-year old Nethra Kumanan, it was all about slogging twice as hard, with the same consistency every single day in Gran Canaria, Spain. Backed by a team of international experts and her very supportive parents, Nethra is gearing up for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, as the first Indian woman sailor to make it to the highest level of the competitive sport. She is competing in the Laser Radial class, where sailors single-handedly handle the boat and navigate the ocean, covering the shortest distance in the fastest possible way.

Her foray into the sport happened when their Chennai-based family put the two siblings - Nethra and her younger brother to every single summer camp under the sun, more than a decade ago. Singing, Bharatnatyam, arts & crafts, tennis, basketball, skating and kalarippayattu were the myriad list of things they tried, but eventually, it was sailing at the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association near the Chennai Port that caught the then kids’ fancy.

What began as an intense weekend sport for Nethra and her brother clearly proved to be much more, as she won the Nationals in 2013, following which her then-coach Pete recognized her potential to make it to the Asian games. Since then, there’s been no looking back. Nethra has represented India at the Asian Games 2014 and 2018, won a medal at the World Championships and now even qualified for the Olympics. After narrowly missing out on qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics, she started bridging the gap, improvising her technique and skills.

It was at the 2015 World Championship in Oman that she got to meet her current coach and two-time Olympian Tamas Eszes, under whom she has been training for the last one and half years.

On the expectations from Nethra at Tokyo this year, Tamas says that this is the beginning of her journey, as going to Tokyo and competing itself is a big step at the age of 22. “You have to compete in two or three Olympic Games to perform. A top 15 finish out of the 44 contestants is a good target. But the next Olympics is just 3 years away and we are expecting good results for 2024”, Tamas added.

Asked when what got her so deeply involved in sailing, Nethra says that she loves sailing for how it is a very complex sport that is all about decision making rather than a contest between strongest, fastest and toughest contenders. “The weather conditions are different every day and it’s about calculated and instant decision making. It is intelligence that works here, not aggression. For me, sailing is a certain amount of freedom that cannot be described in words”, she says hoping that many more people take up the lesser-known sport in India.

“I was around 12 years of age when I started sailing and the Tamil Nadu sailing club that I sailed with was extremely supportive and my father has been the greatest pillar of support, along with the sailing community and the sports authority,” Nethra told Zee Media when asked about the support and backing she received as an athlete in an expensive sport.

While Nethra has become the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics, it must be noted that 9 Indian men have also made it so far. Regarding the measures taken to ensure inclusivity in the male-dominated(in India) sport, Capt. Jitendra Dixit says that currently the ratio of women and men sailors is about 30-70, whereas they target to achieve a 40-60 by end of 2021. “Our aim is to get girls participation at 50% in sailing, as mandated by the IOC to all national authorities. Since sailing is very expensive, we have also waived off region and entry fee for girls” he told Zee Media.

However, sailing has remained largely a government-funded sport in India, with hardly any corporate sponsors. Officials say that the budgeting from the sports ministry has increased by 60-70% over the last few years, in addition to schemes like the Target Olympic podium scheme (TOPS) where sailors qualifying for Olympics are provided funds for foreign training, equipment, coaches and personal staff.

For Nethra’s father who has been always by her side, his biggest hope is that she does well and performs to her own satisfaction. “Whatever she wants, I hope she does that”, Kumanan smiles, as Nethra adds how much she is looking forward to her maiden Olympics.

Delhi Capitals (DC) are set to lock horns against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday as the action continues in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. In what will be the replay of last year’s final, MI and DC head into the much-awaited clash with two wins of their three matches played so far and will be looking to bag their third win of the T20 tournament.

DC would be wary of their record against Mumbai Indians. In IPL 2020, it was all Mumbai Indians when the two sides met. With a head-to-head record of 16-12 favouring Mumbai Indians, the defending champions head into the match as hot favourites. MI had defeated DC four times in IPL 2020 including the final.

While Delhi come into the clash after a win against Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians thumped Delhi Capitals in another tactical masterclass in Chepauk. Both DC and MI are in good form and have arguably the two strongest squads in IPL 2021.

Liverpool midfielder James Milner said on Monday he hopes a European Super League (ESL) does not happen despite his club being one of 12 teams to sign up to a breakaway.

The English champions have teamed up with Premier League rivals Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal for the proposed 20-team competition.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan are the other founder members of the plan.

However, speaking after Liverpool's 1-1 draw at Leeds in the Premier League, Milner joined governments, governing bodies, fans and other players to criticise the proposals.

"There is a lot of questions. I can only say my personal opinion, I don't like it and hopefully it doesn't happen," said Milner, who was Liverpool skipper for the fixture in the absence of the injured Jordan Henderson.

Fans from both clubs protested outside Elland Road before kick-off with the plans fiercely criticised by supporters' groups as a cynical attempt by club owners to make more money.

"For the same reasons everyone else has been talking about it," added Milner on why he was against the plans.

"It's been difficult, we've had a game we're trying to prepare for, but I can only imagine what has been said and agree with most of it.

"Players obviously have no say, so the welcome we got to the ground tonight felt a bit unjust. We are here to play football and have no control over it."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he was also not consulted by the club's American owners and criticised plans for the competition's proposed format.

Under the proposals, 15 founder members would compete in tournament every year without having to qualify.

Liverpool are in danger of failing to qualify for next season's Champions League as they sit sixth in the Premier League, behind Leicester and West Ham, two clubs excluded from the plans.

"One thing I understand and that people think is not right is the competitiveness, I get that," Klopp told Sky Sports.

"I like the fact that West Ham might play Champions League next year. I don't want them to, because I want us to be there, but I like that they have the chance."

Klopp was previously quoted as saying "I hope this Super League will never happen" and questioned whether fans' interest would be maintained by watching Liverpool face the likes of Real Madrid every year.

In 2019, the German said: "For me, the Champions League is the Super League, in which you do not always end up playing against the same teams.

"Why should we create a system where Liverpool faces Real Madrid for 10 straight years? Who wants to see that every year?"

Klopp admitted his preparation for Monday's game had been disturbed by the news breaking late on Sunday.

But he said he would not resign over the plans.

"My opinion didn't change," he said when asked about his previous comments on a Super League.

"I am here as a football coach and a manager. I will do that as long as people let me do that.

"I feel responsible for the team, for the club and for the relationship we have with our fans. It's a very tough time I'm sure, but I will try to help to sort it somehow."

Liverpool could face sanctions from the Premier League for being involved in the breakaway, while players face the possibility of being banned from representing their national teams.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin described the breakaway as a "disgraceful self-serving proposal from a select few clubs purely fuelled by greed".

'Hopefully it doesn't happen' - Liverpool captain Milner against Super League

As former champion Ashleigh Barty prepares for Roland Garros on May 30, the Australian brushed off any regrets about missing the French Open last year.

She won her only major singles title in Paris in 2019 but after the 2020 event was postponed to September/October she chose not to attend due to issues related to the pandemic.

"It's a long time since I've played at the French Open," she said in Stuttgart on Monday, ahead of her first match on European clay in almost two years.

In her absence the 2020 women's Roland Garros title was won by Iga Swiatek.

The Polish teenager burst onto the tennis scene when she claimed the French crown, defeating then world number six Sofia Kenin in the final.

But Barty said 2021 would be an all round reset.

"It's a fresh start, a fresh start for everyone at that event."

She made clear that her approach was also practical.

"It's a fresh tournament, and it's a new opportunity."

The 24-year-old Barty and American Jennifer Brady crushed American pair Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria 6-3, 6-1 in the Stuttgart doubles round of 16 on Monday.

Barty received a bye to the singles second round, where she will face one of two Germans, either Laura Siegemund or Mona Barthel.

After Stuttgart she plans to play on clay in Madrid and Rome before Roland Garros.

She opened her clay-court season by reaching the quarterfinals in Charleston, South Carolina, at the start of the month.

Even though she skipped much of last season, she is ranked No. 1 in the world and won the hard-court Miami Open which preceded Charleston, but she was cagey about her form.

"From the outside it's judged on results, which can be accurate," she said.

"There have been times I've felt I've been in great form but haven't been winning matches and vice versa. Other ones when I haven't been able to find anything close to the middle of the racket but you find a way through matches."

"It's important not to be completely results driven when you're thinking of your form."

Roland Garros is starting a week later than originally scheduled.

"It's cut into a week of the grass-court season which is very short already," Barty said.

"I don't think a week preparing into Wimbledon will make a huge difference to those in the main draw."

Barty, who is from Queensland, took a break last year to avoid travelling during the pandemic.

She has in the past talked of homesickness, and moving between north American and European due to the season is keeping her far from home.

"Part and parcel of travelling is being comfortable away from home or as comfortable as you can be," she said.

"Obviously I'm a homebody. I love being at home with my family," she said, adding that she tries to speak to them as much as possible.

"Technology is a wonderful thing," she said.

"I love what I do. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to do what I love in the current situation in the world."

I love being at home with my family," she said, adding that she tries to speak to them as much as possible. "Technology is a wonderful thing," she said. "I love what I do. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to do what I love in the current situation in the world."

Barty sees Roland Garros return as a 'fresh start'

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will host a meeting of football chiefs and fans' representatives on Tuesday as they consider what action to take over the proposed European Super League.

It comes as FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the world governing body "disapproves" of the widely condemned breakaway competition, which has triggered threats of legal action and punitive measures.

Twelve powerful clubs -- six from England, and three each from Spain and Italy -- have signed up for the Super League, which offers guaranteed spots for its founding members and billions of dollars in payments.

The English clubs, the Premier League's so-called 'Big Six', are Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham.

It has prompted a furious reaction from fans and officials, with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin saying it was motivated by "greediness, selfishness and narcissism", and Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp saying its closed nature was "not right".

It is understood the Premier League has called its other 14 clubs to an emergency shareholders' meeting on Tuesday, to which the Big Six have not been invited.

Johnson told fans he would do everything he can to give the European Super League a "straight red" card.

Writing in the Sun newspaper, he said he was "horrified" at the implications for clubs up and down the country, which had a "unique place" at the heart of their communities.

In a direct message to fans, he said: "It is your game -- and you can rest assured that I'm going to do everything I can to give this ludicrous plan a straight red."

Protests took place outside Manchester United's Old Trafford ground and Liverpool and Leeds fans gathered outside Elland Road before their Premier League match on Monday to voice their opposition.

- Threat to grassroots -

Prince William, the English FA's president and grandson to Queen Elizabeth II, also shared his concerns over the proposed new competition.

"Now, more than ever, we must protect the entire football community -- from the top level to the grassroots -- and the values of competition and fairness at its core," he tweeted.

The English clubs joined forces with Spanish giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid as well as Italian trio Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan to launch the Super League.

Five more clubs will qualify annually for the 20-team, midweek competition, in which two groups of 10 will precede two-legged quarter- and semi-finals and a one-off final. The competition is due for launch "as soon as is practicable".

It constitutes a serious threat to UEFA, who together with the English, Spanish and Italian football authorities said the Super League clubs could be banned from domestic and European competition.

The breakaway announcement came just hours before UEFA announced a new, 36-team format for the Champions League, which had been conceived to placate the continent's biggest clubs.

Britain's culture and sports secretary Oliver Dowden has raised the possibility of invoking competition laws to block the Super League.

Competitions watchdog the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) told AFP it would study the details of the plan.

"The proposals for a European football super league have attracted high levels of public interest," a spokesman said.

"It is a complex area and we will be carefully considering any competition concerns relating to these proposals.”

British PM vows to show Super League 'red card' ahead of meeting with football chiefs

Plans for a Super League announced by 12 of European football's most powerful clubs plunged the game into an unprecedented crisis on Monday as the UK government threatened to invoke competition law to block a breakaway.

Six Premier League teams -- Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur -- joined forces with Spanish giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid as well as Italian trio Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan to launch the competition.

They plan to leave the UEFA-sanctioned Champions League and start their new tournament "as soon as possible", with plans for three more founding members to join and five other clubs to be invited annually.

The competition threatens to completely upturn the world's biggest sport and leaves the prestigious Champions League -- itself the fruit of the last major shake-up in European football in 1992 -- facing an uncertain future.

Britain's culture secretary Oliver Dowden said the English clubs could find themselves subject to a formal review under British anti-trust law, which prevents the formation of monopolies or corporate cartels.

"We will put everything on the table to prevent this from happening," the minister said, vowing a "very robust response".

The breakaway announcement came just hours before UEFA announced a new format for the Champions League, which had been conceived to placate the continent's biggest clubs.

- Champions League reform -

European football's governing body is pressing ahead with the new format from 2024 onwards, which will see the number of clubs involved increase from 32 to 36 with each team guaranteed 10 games.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin lashed out at the breakaway plan, calling it a "disgraceful self-serving proposal from a select few clubs purely fuelled by greed".

The Slovenian added that European member associations were "all united against this nonsensical project" and said players involved would not be allowed to play for national teams, effectively banning them from taking part in European Championships and World Cups.

However, organisers of the Super League said they would file a motion "before the relevant courts" to stop players being banned and "ensure the seamless establishment and operation" of the competition, according to a letter seen by AFP, addressed to Ceferin and FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.

The breakaway league is being backed by US investment bank JPMorgan, which confirmed to AFP that it was "financing the deal".

The founding clubs will share 3.5 billion euros ($4 billion, £3 billion) for infrastructure investment and to offset pandemic costs, and are expected to receive a further 10 billion euros in "solidarity payments" over the life of the initial commitment -- much more than in the current Champions League.

The 15 eventual founders will be guaranteed to play each year in a competition intended to take place in midweek, allowing clubs in theory to continue participating in domestic leagues.

"One thing I understand and that people think is not right is the competitiveness," said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who confirmed he was not consulted on the proposals.

- Bayern not in favour -

The absence of French and German teams from the founding members is notable, despite Bayern Munich and Qatar-owned Paris Saint-Germain reaching last season's Champions League final.

Bayern have distanced themselves from the project, with chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge saying: "We are convinced that the current structure in football guarantees a reliable foundation."

However, a source close to the 12 founding clubs told AFP "at least two French clubs" are set to be involved every year.

The reaction from fans and pundits across Europe has been furious.

"It's the death of football... Football is based on the concept of competitive balance, sporting competition and qualifying on merit," Tim Payton, head of the Arsenal Supporters Trust, told AFP.

Supporters from both Leeds and Liverpool protested outside Elland Road ahead of Monday's Premier League match.

Players have also voiced their disapproval.

"I can only say my personal opinion, I don't like it and hopefully it doesn't happen," said James Milner, who captained Liverpool on Monday.

- FIFA's 'disapproval' -

Under the plan, two groups of 10 will play each other home and away, with the top three qualifying for the quarter-finals. The fourth and fifth-placed teams would play off for the two remaining spots.

Then the competition would adopt the same two-leg knockout format used in the Champions League before a single-leg final in May.

World governing body FIFA expressed its "disapproval" and called on all parties "to engage in calm, constructive and balanced dialogue".

The Premier League, the richest in Europe, issued a furious statement to say "the concept of a European Super League would destroy" the dream that any team could "climb to the top and play against the best".

The powerful European Club Association said it "strongly opposes" the plans after its own chairman, Juventus supremo Andrea Agnelli, stepped down.

Having been heavily involved in negotiations with UEFA over a new Champions League format, Agnelli came in for stinging criticism from Ceferin.

"I've never seen a person that would lie so many times, so persistently as he did. It's unbelievable," Ceferin said.

But Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez, who was announced as the first Super League president, said the breakaway reflected the big clubs' wishes.

"Football is the only global sport in the world with more than four billion fans and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires," he said.

'Self-serving' Super League opens unprecedented conflict in European football

Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw away to Leeds United on Monday in a match overshadowed by the furious response to the Merseysiders' planned involvement in a breakaway European Super League (ESL).

A draw left sixth-placed Liverpool two points adrift of fourth-placed West Ham in the Premier League.

The Reds opened the scoring before the interval through Sadio Mane only for Diego Llorente to equalise with his first Leeds goal, a header from a corner, three minutes from time.

The top four in the Premier League come the end of the season are usually the four English clubs guaranteed a place in next term's UEFA Champions League.

But even if six-times European champions Liverpool finish in the top four, they may well be banned from the tournament given they are on a collision course with UEFA, the continent's football governing body, after emerging as one of 12 teams who have established plans to form the ESL.

Under the proposals, 15 founder members would compete in the 20-team tournament every year without having to qualify.

Supporters from both Leeds and Liverpool protested outside Elland Road prior to kick-off, while a banner in the stand said: "Earn it on the pitch. Football is for the fans."

Leeds players also wore T-shirts before the game carrying similar messages, while a plane flew overhead trailing the message "#SayNoToSuperLeague".

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who had previously spoken out against the creation of a Super League, struggled to justify the his club's participation in the proposed new competition during a pre-match interview with Sky Sports.

"One thing I understand and that people think is not right is the competitiveness, I get that," he said.

Significantly, no clubs from Klopp's native Germany are involved, with European giants Bayern Munich making clear Monday they were happy with football's "current structure".

Klopp appeared to have more in common with Bayern than his own employers when he added: "I like the fact that West Ham might play Champions League next year. I don't want them to, because I want us to be there, but I like that they have the chance."

Six Premier League teams -- Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur -- joined forces with Spanish giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid and Italian trio Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan to launch the competition.

At Elland Road, Klopp recalled Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota, with star striker Mohamed Salah on the bench.

Jota was involved as Liverpool broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, picking out the run of Trent Alexander-Arnold before the full-back volleyed a first-time ball across the edge of the box for Mane to ease into Leeds' net.

Only a superb block from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson denied Patrick Bamford but Leeds had their equaliser when Llorente headed in Jack Harrison's in-swinging corner in the 87th minute.

Liverpool and Leeds share spoils amid Super League protests

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said on Tuesday that no club will be thrown out of the Champions League for joining a proposed European Super League (ESL).

On Monday, six Premier League teams -- Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur -- joined forces with Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid and Italian trio Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan to launch the planned competition.

They have decided to break away from the UEFA-sanctioned Champions League and start their new competition "as soon as possible", with plans for three more founding members to join and for five other clubs to be invited annually.

Perez claimed Paris Saint-Germain have not been invited.

UEFA said sides in the tournament will be unable to compete in their future competitions, with Perez' Madrid as well as City through to this year's Champions League last four.

"They are the threats of someone who confuses monopoly with property," Perez, who has been named ESL president, said on television programme El Chiringuito.

"Madrid will not be kicked out of the Champions League, definitely not. Nor City, nor anyone else."

He added: "It's not going to happen. I don't want to get into the legal reasons but it's not going to happen. It's impossible."

European football's governing body also said players could be stopped from featuring for their countries too.

"Any player can be totally calm because that is not going to happen," 74-year-old Perez said. "UEFA is a monopoly and it also has to be transparent. UEFA does not have a good image in its history. It has to be open to dialogue and not threatening," he added.

Earlier Perez claimed the move had been made to save the sport.

"Football has to keep changing and adapting to the times. Football is losing interest. Something must be done," Perez said. "Football is the only sport that is global. Television has to change to adapt to the times. We have to think about why 16-24 year-olds are no longer interested in football.

"There are poor quality matches and there are other platforms for entertainment. Football has to change.

"A group of clubs from some European countries want to do something to make this sport more attractive worldwide," Perez added.

He said the coronavirus pandemic had accelerated the need for change and clubs cannot afford to wait for UEFA's proposed Champions League reforms.

"The new Champions League is supposed to start in 2024," said Perez. "In 2024, all the clubs will be dead."

Perez claimed the new league would also help smaller clubs. "They have said it is a league for the rich and it's not true. It's a league to save football," he said.

"The money goes to everyone, it is a pyramid. If those above have money, it trickles down.

"There are 15 teams that generate value and five will enter on sporting merit. It is not closed. It is open. We have never thought of a closed league."

'Madrid will not be kicked out of Champions League': ESL chief Perez

The European Commission vice-president for promoting the European way of life conceded Tuesday that Brussels cannot act against plans for a new football Super League, despite condemning it forcefully.

Asked in an interview with Italy's Il Messaggero newspaper what the Commission might do to block the project, Margaritis Schinas said: "Look, this is not the responsibility of the Commission.

"Europe has for years recognised the right of (football) federations and UEFA to decide independently. It is they who will have to find solutions to this problem."

Schinas had on Monday joined a chorus of condemnation of plans by 12 of Europe's most powerful clubs to form a breakaway league.

"We must defend a values-driven European model of sport based on diversity and inclusion," he said on Twitter.

"There is no scope for reserving it for the few rich and powerful clubs who want to sever links with everything associations stand for: national leagues, promotion and relegation and support to grassroots amateur football.

"Universality, inclusion and diversity are key elements of European sport and of our European way of life."

Super League 'not the EU's responsibility': official

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Tuesday there is "no doubt whatsoever" that football's world governing body "disapproves" of the proposed European Super League (ESL) and that clubs involved could face "consequences".

Twelve major clubs launched plans Monday for a new breakaway league which would drastically change the landscape of the world's most popular sport.

"At FIFA we can only and strongly disapprove the creation of the Super League, of a Super League who is a closed shop, a breakaway from the current institutions, from the leagues, from the associations, from UEFA, and from FIFA," Infantino told a UEFA congress in Switzerland.

"There is no doubt whatsoever of FIFA's disapproval for this."

Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are the six English clubs involved, together with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid from Spain and Italian trio Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan.

UEFA has said the teams would be banned from domestic and other European competitions, including the Champions League.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, the head of the new ESL, has insisted that would be "impossible", but Infantino threatened action as FIFA took a stronger stance than it did with its initial statement when the news first broke.

"It is our task to protect the European sport model, so if some elect to go their own way then they must live with the consequences of their choices," said Infantino.

"They are responsible for their choices.

"Either you're in or you're out. You can't be half in and half out. Think of it, this has to be absolutely, absolutely clear."

"There is no doubt whatsoever of FIFA's disapproval for this." Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are the six English clubs involved, together with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid from Spain and Italian trio Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan.

'No doubt' that FIFA 'disapproves' of Super League: Infantino

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Monday continued their winning run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as they defeated Rajasthan Royals by 45 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. CSK now have two wins in three matches after starting their IPL 2021 campaign with a defeat.

Opting to field first, Rajasthan Royals invited Chennai Super Kings to bat. While CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad fell for a watchful 10 off 13, Faf du Plessis (33) and Moeen Ali (26) stitched a partnership to steady the innings. Suresh Raina managed a brief stay at the crease and ended up with 18 while Ambati Rayudu scored a brisk 27 off 17. However, CSK failed to accelerate after 15 overs with Ravindra Jadeja (8), MS Dhoni (18) departing cheaply. But courtesy of some fine hitting by Sam Curran (13 off 6) and Dwayne Bravo (20 not-out off 8), CSK posted a competitive 188/9 in 20 overs.

Chasing 189, which seems chase able in Mumbai, RR lost opener Manan Vohra for 14 while skipper Sanju Samson was dismissed for one. All-rounder Shivam Dube continued his torrid run of form and scored 17 off 20. Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea will likely be banned from this season's Champions League semi-finals, UEFA executive committee member Jesper Moller told broadcaster DR on Monday.

"The clubs must go, and I expect that to happen on Friday. Then we have to find out how to finish (this season's) Champions League tournament," said Moller, who is the head of the Danish FA.

"There is an extraordinary executive committee meeting on Friday," he said.

Moller's comments came shortly after UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said he wanted bans on the rebel clubs to be imposed.

"We're still assessing with our legal team but we will take all the sanctions that we can and we will inform you as soon we can," he said. "My opinion is that as soon as possible they have to be banned from all our competitions and the players from all our competitions," Ceferin told reporters.

The trio are part of the 12 clubs who announced on Sunday they were setting up a breakaway European Super League as a rival to UEFA's Champions League.

Real Madrid are due to face Chelsea and Manchester City are drawn against Paris St Germain - who have not signed up to the breakaway league.

Real Madrid, Chelsea and Man City could face Champions League semi-final ban: UEFA official

The UEFA executive committee on Monday approved the Champions League reforms, including a brand new ‘Swiss model’ format, which will come into place in the year 2024. As a part of wholescale changes into the UCL, the European competition will consist of 36 instead of the current total of 32.

The development comes after 12 elite football clubs formed a Super League with three more clubs expected to join as co-founders in what will be a 20-team league format tournament among the top European clubs. The move has created an ugly storm on social media as football fans continue to express their outrage on the matter.

The new format -- which will see all 36 clubs brought together into one pool instead of the current system of four-team groups -- was approved at an executive committee meeting of European football's governing body in Switzerland.

Punjab Kings scored 195 but Delhi Capital overhauled them in style with ten balls to spare. DC opener Shikhar Dhawan seemed to have a few tricks left as he scored a majestic 92 off just 49, dominating the bowling.

As Michael Vaughan said on Cricbuzz Live during the post-match analysis, " He knew what the ball was going to do...that's what great T20 players can do. They can think ahead of the bowler….brilliant batting.”

Talking of Dhawan, Joy Bhattacharya added, " If you look at the chase,195 is a chase but he never lets it go out of reach. He accelerated so well. He manipulated the fielders as beautifully as Brian Lara. It was like a chess game out there. He was so far ahead of them.”

Both Vaughan and Joy Bhattacharya were not comfortable with KL Rahul scoring 61 off 51 balls.

As Joy explained, "61 runs off 51 balls is just a strike rate of 120. If your set batsman is scoring at 120 then what chance do other batsmen have? Rahul cannot afford it. If you hit a six you do not rotate strike. If you get a chance, hit another six.”

As Vaughan put it, “To be brutally honest, Punjab should have scored 220-25 on that pitch. Even then they may have lost but they did fall short. Be brave, T20 cricket is a game for the madman."
