Olympic chief Thomas Bach will visit Japan by mid-July, the IOC has announced, after he was forced to cancel a planned trip this month over virus restrictions.

International Olympic Committee vice-president John Coates said in a letter to officials published late Wednesday that Bach would arrive by July 12 -- less than two weeks before the virus-postponed Games are set to begin.

Bach had originally planned to visit in May, but was forced to scrap the trip with parts of Japan under a virus state of emergency.

He had planned to take part in the Olympic torch relay in Hiroshima, at the city's atomic bomb Peace Memorial Park. But virus restrictions mean the event was held without spectators.

Public sentiment is against the Games, with polls showing a majority of Japanese want the event delayed further or cancelled.

Organisers have outlined extensive virus countermeasures to keep the Games safe, including barring overseas fans for the first time ever.

But with Japan battling a fourth wave of infections, doctors' associations have warned that the healthcare system is already overstretched and the Games could add further stress.

IOC officials are currently hunkered with local organisers for three days of online talks that began Wednesday.

Bach announced in opening remarks that he believes more than 80 percent of athletes and team members staying at the Olympic village will be vaccinated by the time the Games open on July 23.

He also said the IOC was willing to bring extra medical personnel to reduce the burden on Japan's healthcare system.

Local media reported Thursday that the total number of people entering Japan from overseas for the Olympics and Paralympics would be halved, as organisers look to allay public anxiety over the Games.

Around 94,000, they said, would arrive from abroad -- including athletes, coaches, backroom staff, officials, IOC members, media and broadcasters -- down from an original estimate of 200,000.

Seven people have been placed under formal investigation for manslaughter in Argentina over the November death of footballing legend Diego Maradona, AFP has learned from a judicial source.

The accused -- who include Maradona's neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov and psychologist Carlos Diaz -- potentially face eight to 25 years in prison.

The indictment is based on findings by a board of experts into Maradona's death from a heart attack last year, a source from the San Isidro Attorney General's Office, which is leading the investigation, said Wednesday.

That report concluded that the footballing icon received inadequate medical care and was left to his fate for a "prolonged, agonizing period" before his death, which came just weeks after undergoing brain surgery on a blood clot.

"After so many injustices, the case has come full circle," the source told AFP.&nbsp;

The accused are prohibited from leaving the country and must appear ahead of an inquiry between May 31 and June 14.

The legal proceedings were prompted by a complaint filed by two of Maradona's five daughters against Luque, who they blamed for their father's deteriorating condition after the brain surgery.

Prosecutors believe Maradona's death was not the result of malpractice or negligent actions of his doctors, but that they knew the former soccer star would die and did nothing to prevent it.

The prosecutors obtained a series of messages and audio that show that the medical team were aware that Maradona was using alcohol, psychiatric medication and marijuana in the last months of his life.

Among the conclusions of the report, the medical board said that "the signs of life risk" shown by the former Napoli and Barcelona star were ignored, and that his care in his final weeks was "plagued by deficiencies and irregularities".

The recriminations and accusations over Maradona's death are taking place alongside another case, over his disputed inheritance, involving his five children, his brothers and Matias Morla, his former lawyer.

Maradona is an idol to millions of Argentines after he inspired the South American country to only their second World Cup triumph in 1986.

Ruben Dias has been named Football Writers’ Player of the Year for 2020-21. The 24-year old became the first defender to win the award since Steve Nicol in 1989. Dias also became one of only three players ever to win the award in their first season at a club, following Jurgen Klinsmann (1995) and Gianfranco Zola (1997).<o:p></o:p>

The Indian men’s cricket team is gearing up for the long tour of the UK, where the Virat Kohli-led side will not only play the ICC World Test Championship final but also a five-match Test series against England. However, the BCCI is in talks with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in a bid to tweak the much-awaited Test series and find a window for the postponed Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. <o:p></o:p>

IPL 2021 had to be postponed indefinitely after 29 matches as multiple COVID-19 cases emerged within the players and staff in the bio-secure bubble. With a packed international cricket calendar, the BCCI is still seeking a window for the remainder of IPL 2021. <o:p></o:p>

According to a report in The Times of India, the BCCI has held talks with the ECB to tweak the five-Test series and carve out a window for IPL 2021.

“BCCI and the ECB are in discussions to tweak the five-Test series. Details of those discussions aren’t public yet. There’ll be a good chance of a quid pro quo,” a source was quoted as saying by the Times of India.<o:p></o:p>

“Only if costs are escalating to a point where it starts affecting stakeholders, the BCCI will consider the UAE as the second option for the IPL. On that front, we aren’t even discounting the idea of hosting the IPL in Sri Lanka,” the sources added.

To The Australian Public,<o:p></o:p>

We pride ourselves on our honesty. So it’s been disappointing to see that our integrity has been questioned by some journalists and past players in recent days in regard to the Cape Town Test of 2018.<o:p></o:p>

We have already answered questions many times on this issue but we feel compelled to put the key facts on the record again:<o:p></o:p>

We did not know a foreign substance was taken onto the field to alter the condition of the ball until we saw the images on the big screen at Newlands<o:p></o:p>

And to those who despite the absence of evidence, insist that ‘we must have known' about the use of a foreign substance simply because we are bowlers, we say this: The umpires during that Test match, Nigel Llong and Richard Illingworth, both very respected and experienced umpires, inspected the ball after the images surfaced on the TV coverage and did not change it because there was no sign of damage.<o:p></o:p>

None of this excuses what happened on the field that day at Newlands. It was wrong and it should have never happened.<o:p></o:p>

We’ve learned valuable lessons and we’d like to think the public can see a change for the better in terms of the way we play, the way we behave and respect the game. Our commitment to improving as people and players will continue.<o:p></o:p>

We respectfully request an end to the rumour-mongering and innuendo.<o:p></o:p>

It has gone on too long and it is time to move on.<o:p></o:p>

Cricket: Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood, Lyon clarify stance on allegations related to sandpaper gate

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic named a 26-man squad for Euro 2020 on Monday, comprising players who won silver at the 2018 World Cup and their younger peers and led by veteran Luka Modric.

"Our latest results were not the best, but I'm an optimist. Our first goal is to get out of the group," Dalic told reporters.

Croatia have been drawn in Group D, and will play England in London on June 13.

Dalic described that opening match as the toughest in the group stage as England "have good quality and we play at Wembley".

Croatia then travel to Glasgow where they will face the Czech Republic on June 18 and Scotland four days later.

"We have difficult opponents, but I believe in us. We are at our best when the going gets tough," Dalic said.

Captain Modric, 35, is among several players who took part in Croatia's wonderful run at the World Cup in Russia in 2018 where they beat England in the semi-final before losing 4-2 to France in the final.

That group of experienced players &nbsp;includes defenders Domagoj Vida, Dejan Lovren and Sime Vrsaljko, midfielders Mateo Kovacic, Marcelo Brozovic and Milan Badelj as well as attackers Ivan Perisic, Andrej Kramaric and Ante Rebic.

While expectations from the team at home are high, Dalic is cautious.

"The bar is set too high, our ambitions are not realistic," he said in an interview with Sportske Novosti daily Monday.

"We are still among the 10 strongest (teams) in Europe, but there are many candidates for the throne who are ahead of us."

Young players like midfielder Nikola Vlasic, forward Josip Brekalo and goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic bring a new energy, but they need time to reach their maximum, he said.

Dalic's squad includes also uncapped 19-year-old Dinamo Zagreb defender Josko Gvardiol.

The squad includes a stand-by list of eight players. It must be officially declared to UEFA by June 1 at the latest.

Football: Veteran Luka Modric to lead Croatia at Euro 2020

Leicester have little time to bask in the glory of winning the FA Cup for the first time as they face Chelsea again on Tuesday in a Premier League clash of huge significance for who makes next season's Champions League.

The Foxes are in pole position to join the already-qualified Manchester City and Manchester United in Europe's premier club competition as they sit third in the table with two games to go.

However, Chelsea and Liverpool know victories in their final two games will likely be enough for both to move above Brendan Rodgers's men into the top four.

Leicester lead the Blues by two points and are three clear of Liverpool, but face the toughest run-in with Tottenham to come on Sunday after their trip to Stamford Bridge.

"We knew we didn't have any favours in the fixtures," said Rodgers on Monday.

"Everything is still in our hands. The players have been absolutely brilliant up until this point. We've got European football, we've got two games now to arrive into the top four."

Despite the disappointment of missing out on his first trophy in English football, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel did not shy away from suggestions that Tuesday's clash is more important than the cup final in the context his side's season.

"When I stepped into this club the task was let's try everything to be in the top four, not let's try everything to win the FA Cup," said Tuchel.

"Because the FA Cup, as big as it is, does not bring you to Champions League football next season. It's top four that brings us there. Tomorrow is another huge game."

Chelsea's strength in depth could prove vital given the quick turnaround from Wembley's energy sapping clash in front of 22,000 fans.

Tuchel's men were the dominant side on Saturday after he introduced Kai Havertz, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ben Chilwell, Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud off the bench in the second-half and the German is likely to make a number of changes.

Liverpool have on paper the easiest run in of the Champions League contenders as they visit Burnley on Wednesday and host Crystal Palace on Sunday.

However, the Reds needed a stunning stoppage time winner from goalkeeper Alisson Becker to see off already-relegated West Brom on Sunday.

"We still need six points to be in the Champions League and then we can maybe sit back with a bit of satisfaction," said Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson.

<h2>- Fans finally return -</h2>

Doors will be open to fans in the Premier League for the first time in 2021 for all 10 games over Tuesday and Wednesday.

Up to 10,000 supporters can attend or a maximum of 25 percent capacity as coronavirus restrictions across England were eased from Monday.

However, there may well be scenes of protest as well as celebration on their return.

Three of the Premier League six involved in the failed European Super League project -- Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea -- are at home this midweek.

The biggest protest is expected for United's clash with Fulham as supporters continue to vent their anger at the club's American owners, the Glazer family.

Liverpool's visit to Old Trafford on May 2 was postponed after supporters stormed the pitch, while more protests took place ahead of that fixture when it did take place last week.

"We've been waiting for a long, long time to welcome the fans back," said United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"It's never nice to see a club that is not united, fans with the team, so we're hoping that Tuesday is going to be a positive day that we move together."

We've got European football, we've got two games now to arrive into the top four." Despite the disappointment of missing out on his first trophy in English football, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel did not shy away from suggestions that Tuesday's clash is more important than the cup final in the context his side's season. "When I stepped into this club the task was let's try everything to be in the top four, not let's try everything to win the FA Cup," said Tuchel. "Because the FA Cup, as big as it is, does not bring you to Champions League football next season. It's top four that brings us there. Tomorrow is another huge game." Chelsea's strength in depth could prove vital given the quick turnaround from Wembley's energy sapping clash in front of 22,000 fans. - Fans finally return - Doors will be open to fans in the Premier League for the first time in 2021 for all 10 games over Tuesday and Wednesday. Up to 10,000 supporters can attend or a maximum of 25 percent capacity as coronavirus restrictions across England were eased from Monday. However, there may well be scenes of protest as well as celebration on their return. Football: Chelsea eye Leicester revenge with Champions League riches at stake

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has warned Sergio Aguero there will be no room for sentiment when he picks his team for the Champions League final against Chelsea later this month.

Aguero has announced he will leave City at the end of the season after 10 successful years with the Premier League champions.

The Argentina striker is City's all-time record goalscorer, but he may not have a fairytale farewell at the end of an injury-ravaged campaign in which he has been limited to just 18 appearances.

Aguero will miss Tuesday's match at Brighton with an adductor problem.

He could return for one last appearance at the Etihad Stadium against Everton on Sunday.

But Guardiola refused to give any guarantees the 32-year-old will feature in City's first Champions League final on May 29.

"I would say I would be cold," Guardiola said of his attitude towards selection. "I have to take a decision which is the best to win that game, so I have to be.

"If Sergio is fit he is going to help us, that is for sure, if he is going to help us score goals he is going to play, but it's the final of the Champions League. I have to take the decision that gives us the best chance of winning that game."

Guardiola suggested it would be a focused City side that faces Brighton, with places up for grabs in the final against Chelsea.

He admitted he can tell the difference around the club's training ground as his players try to persuade him they deserve to start in Porto.

"They listen a little bit more," he said. "It's a serious point what you say: they're not stupid. They want to play so they are nicer to me.&nbsp;

"Then I will make a selection and they will be who they are normally: grumpy, upset with me. That's normal!"

"I remember the starting XI at Barca was so clear. Here we rotate a lot and everyone can play. Still I'm not clear on the way we're going to play and who we are going to play.&nbsp;

"That's why I have to take a look over the next 10 days and then we'll take a decision."

Football: Guardiola warns Aguero over Champions League final berth

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has told the club he wants to leave at the end of the season, according to reports on Monday.

Kane is unhappy at Tottenham's lack of progress this season and is willing to leave after 12 years with the north London side, according to Sky Sports.

The England captain reportedly wants his future resolved before the delayed Euro 2020 starts on June 11.

Kane's contract with Tottenham has another three years to run and chairman Daniel Levy is known to be a tough negotiator, which could ruin the 27-year-old's hopes of a quick resolution.

Tottenham refused to be drawn into debating Kane's future in public as they focus on their final two Premier League games, with Europa League qualification in their sights.

"We won't be commenting - our focus is on finishing the season as strongly as possible. That's what everyone should be focused on," a club spokesman said.

Premier League champions Manchester City, Manchester United and Champions League finalists Chelsea have all been mooted as likely suitors for Kane, who has scored 32 goals in all competitions this term.

Paris Saint-Germain, managed by Kane's former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, and Spanish giants Real Madrid have also been linked with the striker.

Kane, a product of the club's youth academy, has scored 220 goals in 334 total appearances for Tottenham, establishing himself as one of the world's best forwards.

But he sparked speculation about a potential move earlier this season when he said it was "hard" to talk about his future.

He has regularly spoken about his desire to win trophies, but is yet to land one with Tottenham, who are without major silverware since the 2008 League Cup.

During Kane's time in Spurs' first team, they have lost in the 2019 Champions League final against Liverpool and been beaten in two League Cup finals, including this season's against Manchester City

Tottenham are currently without a permanent manager following Jose Mourinho's dismissal last month.

With caretaker boss Ryan Mason in charge, Tottenham will qualify for the Europa League if they win their final two games of the Premier League season.

Gloucestershire wicketkeeper-batsman James Bracey and Sussex seamer Ollie Robinson have been called up to the Test squad for the first time. Both have been in impressive form during the early stages of the&nbsp;County Championship. Bracey has scored 478 Championship runs so far in this campaign at an average of 53, while Robinson has taken 29 wickets at an average of 14.

Both are familiar with the England set-up, having toured as reserves during England’s winter Test programmes in Sri Lanka and India. They were part of the extended squads during last summer’s behind closed doors Test series against West Indies and Pakistan, respectively.

There is a recall for Somerset all-rounder Craig Overton, who last featured for England in a Test match in September 2019 against Australia at Emirates Old Trafford – he will be looking to add to his four Test caps.

Multi-format players Moeen Ali, Jonathan Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran and Chris Woakes are rested after completing a quarantine period following the cancellation of the Indian Premier League earlier this month. They will spend some time resting before joining up with their respective counties in due course.

Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes (fractured finger) and Sussex seamer Jofra Archer (right elbow) were not considered for selection.

Stokes is progressing well from his fractured left index finger and is set to return to action next month for Durham in the Vitality Blast competition.

Archer is to meet with a medical consultant later this week to determine the seriousness of his right elbow soreness.

England Men’s Head Coach, Chris Silverwood, said:

“The summer of Test cricket will be fascinating. Playing the top two teams in the world, in New Zealand and India, is perfect preparation for us as we continue to improve and progress towards an Ashes series in Australia at the back end of the year.

“With several players not available through injury or being rested for the New Zealand series, it is an opportunity for us to reward those who have been on the fringes of England squads over the past 12 months.

“James Bracey and Ollie Robinson deserve their call ups to the Test squad. They have been consistent performers in the County Championship this season and over the past 18 months, have excelled for the Lions on the field and in the various camps they have been involved in.

“Having spent all winter and last summer in the company of our established Test players, they have immersed themselves in preparing and understanding what it takes to play at this level. The environment and culture will be something they are used to, and should they be in a position to make their Test debuts, they will be ready to showcase their skills.

“They are both resilient characters and have demonstrated to me, the captain and coaches that they have the desire, temperament and the ability to continually improve to give themselves every chance of succeeding on the international stage.”

In respect of those players injured and rested, Silverwood, added:

“Jofra Archer is to see a consultant this week to understand the severity of his right elbow injury. He struggled in Sussex’s Championship fixture last week and he wasn’t able to bowl on the final two days of the match. We need to get this resolved once and for all to give him the best chance of being fully fit as we build up to an intense winter, which will include a T20 World Cup and the Ashes. We need him firing in all formats of the game.

“Ben Stokes is making excellent progress following his fractured left index finger sustained last month in the Indian Premier League. If he continues to improve without any impact on his rehabilitation, we could see him return next month for Durham in the Vitality Blast competition. We will assess him again towards the end of this month.

“As for the players who have just come out of quarantine after the cancelled IPL, we felt it necessary for them to have an extended break. We need them to recharge mentally. We will then take a view when they return to cricket. It will mean that they will get some competitive matches with their respective counties either in the&nbsp;County Championship or the Vitality Blast next month. We will work closely with each individual on when they are likely to play again.

“This is the start of our international summer and an exceptionally long winter, so we are mindful that we need the players ready both physically and mentally. Understanding players needs are paramount in our planning and something that will continually develop across the year leading into the World Cup and Ashes campaigns.”

Cricket: Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer miss out as England announce squad for Test Series against New Zealand

Tottenham Hotspur icon Harry Kane has not mentioned anything about wishing to leave the Premier League side, said caretaker manager Ryan Mason on Tuesday.

Mason was responding to questions over media reports on Monday that Kane's patience had finally broken at the lack of silverware and he wanted to move to a more competitive club.

Mason was adamant at his press conference on the eve of their penultimate league game with Aston Villa that the topic had not been raised by Kane.

Kane and Mason go back a long way having been team-mates at Spurs till 2016 when the latter left.&nbsp;

"No, not that I'm aware of," said Mason when questioned whether Kane has asked to leave.

"All of my conversations with Harry have been about the game. All these conversations, I am not so sure. I don't know.

"I speak to Harry pretty much every day.

"He's excited along with me about (Wednesday's game against Aston Villa). Our only discussions have been about the game tomorrow. We're looking forward to tomorrow."

Mason confirmed that Kane, who is in contention for a third Premier League Golden Boot, will start against Villa on Wednesday in front of 10,000 home fans.

"He starts tomorrow because he is our best striker and he is one of the best strikers in the world," Mason said.

"I have been consistent, I am here for the next two games and that is my main focus in preparing a football team and winning a game of football.

"Hopefully we can do that and Harry can get on the scoresheet.

"They'll love seeing him play. He loves the club, he's been here from a very young age, come through the system.

Former Australia skipper Ian Chappell has said that Cameron Bancroft’s latest statement on the infamous sandpaper-gate scandal would decrease his chances of being in the reckoning for Australia selection. Bancroft, in a recent interview, had hinted that the Australian bowlers might have known about the ball-tampering during the 2018 Newlands Test against South Africa.<o:p></o:p>

Nitish Rana has created a space for himself in both the domestic circuit and the Indian Premier League for Delhi and Kolkata Knight Riders respectfully and the southpaw feels he is ready for international cricket as he waits to get his “reward” when the Indian team is selected for July’s tour of Sri Lanka.<o:p></o:p>

India will be without their first-team players as most of them will be engaged in the three-and-a-half-month-long tour of England. <o:p></o:p>

Rana said that he has a strong feeling that his name would be called up for the Sri Lanka tour while adding he has performed well in last three years in the limited-overs circuit.<o:p></o:p>

"It is there at the back of my mind that my name should come (in the squad) and I am prepared for that because I feel my name would come," Nitish told PTI in an interview when asked whether he is hoping for a call-up.

Rana has amassed 2,266 runs in 38 First-Class matches and averages over 40. With India set to play Sri Lanka in a limited-overs series consisting of three T20Is and as many ODIs, the Men in Blue would have their white-ball specialists travelling to the island nation.

Rana, who scored 201 runs from seven matches in the currently-suspended IPL also reflected on the season.<o:p></o:p>

"To be very honest, from the last 3-4 years, it has been a pattern for me that I start the season well, in mid-season, I have 2-3 flop innings and then at the end of the season I play 1-2 innings well.<o:p></o:p>

"So always, the total (runs) scored are in between 330-400," he said.<o:p></o:p>

However, inconsistency has always been lined with Rana and his batting. But the left-handed batsman said that he has worked upon the aspect. <o:p></o:p>

"I added many skills mentally in my game and normal life. I felt that in the last 2-3 years, I used to become very happy that I am performing well and it should continue, but the hunger to score runs used to finish.<o:p></o:p>

"...my coaches said a hungry Nitish Rana should stay alive, it will make you consistent," he elaborated.<o:p></o:p>

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez on Monday named a 26-member squad for the Euro 2020 as he included Axel Witsel but omitted Marouane Fellaini.<o:p></o:p>

Notably, Witness underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon in January and has resumed running just a few days ago. While he is expected to be fully fit by the time Euro 2020 starts, his availability for the June 11-July 11 tournament is still in doubt. <o:p></o:p>

"With a squad extended to 26 (instead of 23), I can take this risk (on Witsel), he's a unique player," said Martinez.<o:p></o:p>

Whereas Fellaini has not been called up from international retirement after last playing for Belgium in the FIFA World Cup 2018, following which he left for China.

The ICC has concluded its investigation into the documentary programme ‘Cricket’s Match Fixers’ broadcast by Al Jazeera on May 27, 2018. No charges will be bought under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code against any of the five Participants to the Code who featured in the programme due to insufficient credible and reliable evidence.

The comprehensive investigation focused on three main areas: the claims made by the programme, the suspects who were part of it and how the programme gathered evidence.

The programme alleged that two matches were fixed: India v England in Chennai in 2016 and India v Australia in Ranchi in 2017.

To assess whether the passages of play highlighted in the programme were unusual in any way, the ICC engaged four independent betting and cricketing specialists to analyse the claims. All four concluded that the passages of play identified in the programme as being allegedly fixed were entirely predictable, and therefore implausible as a fix.

All five Participants to the Code who featured in the programme have been interviewed by the ICC Integrity Unit and there is insufficient evidence based on the normal thresholds applied through the Code to lay any charges.

Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager – Integrity said: “We welcome the reporting of alleged corrupt activity within cricket as there is no place for such conduct in our sport, but we also need to be satisfied there is sufficient evidence to sustain charges against Participants. In the case of the claims aired in this programme, there are fundamental weaknesses in each of the areas we have investigated that make the claims unlikely and lacking in credibility, a viewpoint that has been corroborated by four independent experts.

“On the basis of the programme, the Participants to the Code who were filmed appear to have behaved in a questionable manner, however, we have been unable to assess the full context of the conversations that took place beyond what was seen on screen versus what the Participants claim actually happened. This combined with the absence of any other credible evidence means there are insufficient grounds to bring charges under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code

“Should any new substantial evidence come to light I will re-examine the case. But at present, I am comfortable with the conclusion of the investigation and the thoroughness with which it was undertaken.”

Bengal batsman Abhimanyu Easwaran is set to embark on a three-and-a-half-month journey to the UK after being named in the standby for the ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand and a five-match Test series against England. <o:p></o:p>

The 25-year-old has been knocking on the doors of the senior national team for a few seasons now. Having scored an impressive 861 runs in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season, Easwaran caught the eyes of the national selectors and has been a constant part of the India ‘A’ side. The elegant right-handed batter was also among the standbys when England played a four-Test series in India earlier this year. <o:p></o:p>

In an interaction with WION, Abhimanyu Easwaran shared his experience of rubbing shoulders with the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, the upcoming tour of England, Abhimanyu Cricket Academy, his experience in Red Bull Campus Cricket and much more.

<o:p></o:p>

“It was an amazing experience. I was able to learn so much from the senior members of the side, sharing the nets, having practice sessions together. It was an education for me. The intensity with which Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma or other senior members of the team train, is unbelievable. You learn a lot by simply watching them go about their business in nets. I feel it is about learning as much as possible and become a better version of yourself,” Easwaran told WION in an interview.

When asked whether he had any one-on-on discussion with Kohli or other senior members of the squad, Easwaran said: “Yes, I did have a conversation with Virat Kohli. It was more personal as in how he approaches a practice session or a match, how he adjusts to different match scenarios and other mental aspects of the game. His confidence rubs off on others and I could feel it.”

<o:p></o:p>

“I had a good chat with R Sridhar (India’s fielding coach) and attended his training sessions with utmost focus. I learned a lot by watching Ajinkya Rahane, who focuses with the same intensity on fielding as much as he does on batting, so it was brilliant learning for me,” Easwaran, the skipper of the Bengal Ranji Trophy team, added.<o:p></o:p>

The 25-year-old has a cricket academy named after him in Dehradun. Easwaran gets his love for cricket from his father - RP Easwaran – who took the charge even before the talented batsman was born. Manoj Rawat and Nirmalya Sengupta were hired as personal coaches for Abhimanyu, traveling with him to matches to observe and monitor his growth. Even the great Ramakant Achrekar, Roger Binny and Arshad Ayub have worked with Easwaran in small capacities.

Ahead of the gruelling tour of England, and a time, when parts of India are reeling under complete or partial lockdowns, Easwaran is spending his time in Dehradun while gearing up for the much-awaited series. &nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

“Credit to my father, he is really passionate about cricket and built the academy even before I was born. The facilities are good and I can completely focus on my game here. In normal days, I hardly get time to be there but now, I am practicing on different aspects of my game and using the facilities as much as I can,” Easwaran quipped.

<o:p></o:p>

A major part of Easwaran’s rise was featuring for his college, Umes Chandra College in Red Bull Campus Cricket. Easwaran added that playing Red Bull Campus Cricket provided him a major confidence boost while giving him access to competitive, well-organised&nbsp;cricket tournaments.

<o:p></o:p>

“It was a delightful experience. To have a well-organised tournament at such a young age was crucial to my development. It was great to rub shoulders with players from across the country. I feel, such tournaments are important in a youngster’s development and Red Bull has done a great job in providing that platform to all,” Easwaran said.

'Virat Kohli's confidence, energy rub off on others': Abhimanyu Easwaran to WION

More than 80 per cent of Japanese oppose hosting the virus-postponed Olympics this year, a new poll showed on Monday, underlining public antipathy less than 10 weeks before the Tokyo Games.

The latest downbeat survey comes after Japan expanded a coronavirus state of emergency Friday as the nation battles a fourth wave of infections.

The surge in cases has put pressure on the country's healthcare system, with medical professionals repeatedly warning about shortages and burnout.

The weekend poll by the Asahi Shimbun daily found 43 per cent of respondents want the 2020 Games cancelled, and 40 per cent want a further postponement.

Those figures are up from 35 per cent who backed cancellation in a survey by the paper a month ago, and 34 per cent who wanted a further delay.

"I am one of those in the 80 per cent. I think the Olympics should be postponed. Is it that difficult to postpone it?" passer-by Sumiko Usui, 74, told AFP in Tokyo.

Takahiro Yoshida, 53, also expressed doubts over the event, which involves thousands of overseas athletes, officials and media.

"In my honest opinion, it will be difficult to hold the Games... Athletes from overseas must be worried as well,&nbsp;because&nbsp;Japan's coronavirus&nbsp;situation is bad," he said.

"I want to see it happen, but it will probably be difficult when you think about the bigger picture."

Only 14 percent support holding the Games this summer as scheduled, down from 28 percent, according to the Asahi poll of 1,527 replies from 3,191 telephone calls.

If the Games go ahead, 59 percent of respondents said they want no spectators, with 33 percent backing lower fan numbers and three percent a regular-capacity Games.

<h2>- Mass vaccinations -</h2>

For months, polling has found a majority in Japan oppose holding the Games this summer.

A separate poll by Kyodo News published Sunday showed 59.7 percent back cancellation, though further postponement was not listed as an option.

Olympic organisers say tough anti-virus measures, including regular testing of athletes and a ban on overseas fans, will keep the Games safe.

But the Kyodo poll found 87.7 per cent of respondents worry that an influx of athletes and staff members from abroad may spread the virus.

Asked about the polls, government spokesman Katsunobu Kato said the government would "make efforts so that the Japanese people understand the Tokyo Games will be held in a safe and secure manner".

"We need to give explanations on details of the concrete (coronavirus) measures," he said, insisting that the Games would not put further pressure on medical services.

Japan has seen a smaller Covid-19 outbreak than many countries, with fewer than 11,500 deaths so far. But the government has come under pressure for its vaccine rollout.

The Kyodo poll found 85 per cent of respondents considered the rollout slow, with 71.5 per cent unhappy with the government's handling of the pandemic.

Thousands of slots were snapped up on Monday as online bookings opened for two mass vaccination centres which will deliver up to 10,000 shots a day in Tokyo and 5,000 in Osaka, initially to the elderly.

All 25,000 available slots were already booked up in Osaka, the centre said, while around 21,000 reservations were made in Tokyo.

Over 80 per cent in Japan oppose Olympics this year: poll

The infamous Sandpaper Gate has again become the talk of the cricketing world since the fresh revelations by Australian batsman Cameron Bancroft who suggested that bowlers were aware of the ball-tampering episode. Now, David Warner’s manager James Erskine has opened up on the investigation process while slamming Cricket Australia for handling the matter badly.<o:p></o:p>

Erskine has revealed that the investigation was completed without even interrogating all the players while saying that the whole truth will come out while claiming he knows everything about the episode. &nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

"The report that was done, they didn't interview all the players. The whole thing was so badly handled, it was a joke. But eventually, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, will come out and I know the whole truth. But it doesn't serve any purpose because the Australian public over a period of time got to dislike the Australian team because they didn't behave particularly well," Erskine told Sydney Morning Herald. <o:p></o:p>

Erskine accepted that what Steve Smith, David Warner and Bancroft did was wrong but the punishment didn’t fit the crime, hinting that the 12-month ban for Smith and Warner, and nine-month suspension of Bancroft was harsh.

"There is absolutely no doubt that Smith, Warner and Bancroft were treated despicably. The fact of the matter is they did the wrong thing but the punishment didn't fit the crime. During the Newlands Test against South Africa in March 2018, Bancroft was caught on the camera trying to alter the condition of the ball using a sandpaper gate. The infamous Sandpaper Gate has again become the talk of the cricketing world since the fresh revelations by Australian batsman Cameron Bancroft who suggested that bowlers were aware of the ball-tampering episode.

The infamous Sandpaper Gate has again become the talk of the cricketing world since the fresh revelations by Australian batsman Cameron Bancroft who suggested that bowlers were aware of the ball-tampering episode. Now, David Warner’s manager James Erskine has opened up on the investigation process while slamming Cricket Australia for handling the matter badly. Erskine has revealed that the investigation was completed without even interrogating all the players while saying that the whole truth will come out while claiming he knows everything about the episode. Erskine accepted that what Steve Smith, David Warner and Bancroft did was wrong but the punishment didn’t fit the crime, hinting that the 12-month ban for Smith and Warner, and nine-month suspension of Bancroft was harsh. Sandpaper Gate was badly handled, it was a joke: David Warner's manager opens up on ball-tampering scandal

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is super excited, and it’s all for Allison Becker. And the lanky Indian custodian doesn’t mind doing a Becker sometime soon.

Allison Becker, the Liverpool FC goalkeeper came off his line to head home the match-winner against West Bromwich Albion, the 2-1 victory keeping Liverpool’s chances of making it to the UEFA Champions League alive.

“I just can’t stop watching his header again, and again. Maybe it just happened – the ball fell in place and out of pure commitment he glided the ball – and what a header! But if he is doing that regularly in practice, then we have to admit that he is extra special,” Gurpreet told AIFF.&nbsp;

So does Gurpreet want to emulate Allison?

“Not that I am desperate to do it, and I hope that I don’t have to do it ever. Obviously, there have been quite a few times that I have gone up for my club Bengaluru FC, and also during my stint with previous clubs,” he mentioned.

“But if the team requires it as per the situation, who knows? But I would rather leave it to Sunil Chhetri. He is much better at it than me. I have to work on me attacking the ball, and on my heading. But I don’t mind it,” the Indian goalkeeper added.

Allison’s goal was the first Premier League goal of the season by a goalkeeper. In his 128 competitive matches for Liverpool, the Brazilian goalkeeper had just one touch inside the opposition box and that turned into a goal. Of the six goalkeepers to have scored a goal in Premier League history, Alisson was the first to find the net with a headed finish.

Alisson was the scorer of Liverpool's 38th winning goal in the 90th minute of a Premier League game; 13 more than any other team in the competition's history.

“For a modern-day goalkeeper, the importance of being good with your feet is paramount. Gone are the days when a goalkeeper was just a shot-stopper,” Gurpreet, an Arjuna Awardee, further said.

“Personally, it was an exciting challenge to undergo the transition phase. When I started professionally, the trend was more to save shots. The first instructions which I received were to kick the ball back to where it came from. But it’s changed now,” the first Indian player to feature in a Europa League (for Norwegian side Stabaek FK) match expressed.

“The goalkeeper needs to initiate the attack, help the team build up on the possession. His distribution has to be impeccable. However, I am still a student of the game and working on the same. There is a long way to go,” he added.

“And now I know, a goalkeeper needs to head it perfectly too,” he concluded.

Won't mind pulling off an Alisson Becker if required: Gurpreet Singh Sandhu

Barcelona became the first Spanish side to win the women's Champions League with a stunning performance to thrash Chelsea 4-0 in Gothenburg on Sunday.

The La Liga champions scored all four goals inside 36 minutes as a Melanie Leupolz own goal, Alexia Putellas's penalty and simple finishes from Aitana Bonmati and Caroline Graham Hansen killed the game as a contest.

Barca have romped to the Spanish title with a 100 percent record after 26 games in La Liga, boasting a 123 goal difference.

"Congratulations, champions, you are unstoppable," tweeted Barcelona president Joan Laporta.

"You are a reference. You are an example. You are one of the big reasons that make Barca more than a club. You moved us with your magnificent victory."

Chelsea had been on course for a quadruple, but even the big-spending English champions were no match for the Catalans' speed of thought and movement.

"Today was difficult because the game was over before it began," said Chelsea manager Emma Hayes.

"We will learn from because this is the next step up. I thought we showed some naivety at times.

"We're not quite European champions yet, but we are the second best team in Europe and I'll take that as a step in the right direction."

The Blues were rocked after just 33 seconds when after Lieke Martens's shot came back off the crossbar, Fran Kirby's attempted clearance looped into her own net off the unlucky Leupolz.

Chelsea had the chance to hit back immediately as Pernille Harder, who cost a world record transfer fee when she arrived in London from Wolfsburg in September, fired over from close range.

Jenni Hermoso pulled another big chance wide for Barca before Harder was denied again by a last-ditch tackle in an end-to-end start.

But Chelsea were shell-shocked once Hermoso went down under Leupolz's challenge and Putellas confidently slotted home the spot-kick.

A brilliant team move made it 3-0 as Martens fed Hermoso, who drilled a pass into the path of Bonmati and she beat Ann-Katrin&nbsp;Berger from close range.

Martens was toying with Chelsea right-back Niamh Charles and the Dutch international laid the fourth on a plate for Hansen to tap into an empty net.

Two years ago it was Barca who found themselves 4-0 down after just 30 minutes against a dominant Lyon side in the Champions League final in Budapest.

"We deserve it. It has been a lot of work since the final in Budapest. We had a goal to get back to the final and win it and we've done it," said Bonmati, who won player of the match.

The French giants had won this competition for the past five seasons, but their reign was ended by Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals, who were then eliminated by Barcelona in the last four.

Chelsea will be hoping to show similar resilience to come back and win the competition for the first time as they missed out on becoming the first English side to become European champions since Arsenal in 2007.

Sam Kerr missed a number of chances to pull a goal back for Hayes's women in the second-half.

But Barca could afford the luxury of withdrawing Hansen and Hermoso as they cruised towards the title and set a new record winning margin in a women's Champions League final.

In what comes as a huge blow to England, pacer Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against New Zealand starting in June. <o:p></o:p>

Archer recently returned to action in the County Championship for Sussex against Kent but could manage just five overs in the second innings. The England speedster felt pain in his right elbow when bowling and missed the action in the final two days of the match.<o:p></o:p>

The England and Sussex medical staff will now seek guidance on Archer’s elbow situation. The pacer will see a medical consultant later this week to determine the next course of action.

Archer’s elbow issue has been troubling him for many months now. The pacer missed action in India’s home Test series against England. He further underwent surgery on his finger but that is not related to the current injury concerns around Archer. <o:p></o:p>

Archer has been one of the mainstays of the England pace bowling department and has been seen pairing up with the likes of Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Mark Wood among others as England continue to adhere to its rotation policy keeping the hectic cricket schedule in mind. England, besides playing a bunch of bilateral series, are scheduled to play the T20 World Cup later this year before shifting the focus to the much-awaited Ashes.
