SpaceX is working on a top-secret project to build a network of spy satellites for the US, Reuters has reported, citing sources familiar with the program. Watch the video to know more.

Elon Musk's SpaceX is building a network of spy satellites for US intelligence: Report

SpaceX is building a network of hundreds of spy satellites under a classified contract with a US intelligence agency, five sources familiar with the programme said, demonstrating deepening ties between billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk's space company and national security agencies.

The network is being built by SpaceX's Starshield business unit under a $1.8 billion contract signed in 2021 with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), an intelligence agency that manages spy satellites, the sources said.

The plans show the extent of SpaceX's involvement in US intelligence and military projects and illustrate a deeper Pentagon investment into vast, low-Earth orbiting satellite systems aimed at supporting ground forces.

If successful, the sources said the programme would significantly advance the ability of the US government and military to quickly spot potential targets almost anywhere on the globe.

The contract signals growing trust by the intelligence establishment of a company whose owner has clashed with the Biden administration and sparked controversy over the use of Starlink satellite connectivity in the Ukraine war, the sources said.

The Wall Street Journal reported in February the existence of a $1.8 billion classified Starshield contract with an unknown intelligence agency without detailing the purposes of the programme.

Reuters reporting discloses for the first time that the SpaceX contract is for a powerful new spy system with hundreds of satellites bearing Earth-imaging capabilities that can operate as a swarm in low orbits, and that the spy agency that Musk's company is working with is the NRO.

Reuters was unable to determine when the new network of satellites would come online and could not establish what other companies are part of the program with their own contracts.

SpaceX, the world's largest satellite operator, did not respond to several requests for comment about the contract, its role in it and details on satellite launches. The Pentagon referred a request for comment to the NRO and SpaceX.

In a statement the NRO acknowledged its mission to develop a sophisticated satellite system and its partnerships with other government agencies, companies, research institutions and nations, but declined to comment on Reuters' findings about the extent of SpaceX’s involvement in the effort.

"The National Reconnaissance Office is developing the most capable, diverse, and resilient space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance system the world has ever seen," a spokesperson said.

The satellites can track targets on the ground and share that data with U.S. intelligence and military officials, the sources said. In principle, that would enable the US government to quickly capture continuous imagery of activities on the ground nearly anywhere on the globe, aiding intelligence and military operations, they added.

Roughly a dozen prototypes have been launched since 2020, among other satellites on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets, three of the sources said.

A US government database of objects in orbit shows several SpaceX missions having deployed satellites that neither the company nor the government have ever acknowledged. Two sources confirmed those to be prototypes for the Starshield network.

All the sources asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to discuss the US government program.

The Pentagon is already a big SpaceX customer, using its Falcon 9 rockets to launch military payloads into space. Starshield's first prototype satellite, launched in 2020, was part of a separate, roughly $200 million contract that helped position SpaceX for the subsequent $1.8 billion award, one of the sources said.

The planned Starshield network is separate from Starlink, SpaceX's growing commercial broadband constellation that has about 5,500 satellites in space to provide near-global internet to consumers, companies and government agencies.

The classified constellation of spy satellites represents one of the US government’s most sought-after capabilities in space because it is designed to offer the most persistent, pervasive and rapid coverage of activities on Earth.

"No one can hide," one of the sources said of the system’s potential capability, when describing the network's reach.

Musk, also the founder and CEO of Tesla and owner of social media company X, has driven innovation in space but has caused frustration among some officials in the Biden administration because of his past control of Starlink in Ukraine, where Kyiv’s military uses it for secure communications in the conflict with Russia. That authority over Starlink in a war zone by Musk, and not the US military, created tension between him and the US government.

A series of Reuters’ stories has detailed how Musk's manufacturing operations, including at SpaceX, have harmed consumers and workers.

The Starshield network is part of intensifying competition between the U.S. and its rivals to become the dominant military power in space, in part by expanding spy satellite systems away from bulky, expensive spacecraft at higher orbits. Instead a vast, low-orbiting network can provide quicker and near-constant imaging of the Earth.

China also plans to start building its own satellite constellations, and the Pentagon has warned of space weapon threats from Russia, which could be capable of disabling entire satellite networks.

Starshield aims to be more resilient to attacks from sophisticated space powers.

SpaceX successfully launched the Crew-8 mission in collaboration with NASA on Sunday from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA and SpaceX launched a crew of four to the International Space Station in the Dragon spacecraft, marking the third attempt after they cancelled it twice due to poor weather conditions. The launch marked SpaceX's eighth crew rotation mission in the ISS with NASA's Commercial Crew Program. NASA astronauts involved in the mission are Commander Mattew Dominick, Pilot Michael Barratt, and Mission Specialists Jeanette Epps and Alexander Grebenkin, a Russian Roscosmos cosmonaut. Barratt would be making his third visit to the ISS with this mission. The four-member crew will return to Earth in the fall. They will spend six months at the ISS. SpaceX used their "reusable, two-stage rocket" Falcon 9 to launch the Dragon spacecraft. After detaching from Dragon, the Falcon 9 will land at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. ALSO READ | 'Devil Comet' likely to make an appearance during total solar eclipse in April A few days ahead of the launch, the administrators discovered a small air leak at the space station. ISS Program Manager Joel Montalbano stated at a Crew-8 mission briefing, "It's not an impact to Crew-8, but I didn't want anybody to be surprised." At 10:53 pm on Sunday, the mission lifted off after the engineers concluded that a small crack on the hatch seal wouldn't be an issue in launching the mission. The mission crew members cheered on the ground as the first-stage booster separated from Dragon and the spacecraft moved towards space. The crew will perform over 200 science experiments at the ISS, often referred to as a "floating laboratory." These experiments are a part of the long-term mission to prepare humanity for long-term stays in space. One such experiment is taking stem cells to space to study their effects on degenerative disease. Another involves observing the cellular impact of microgravity and ultraviolet radiation on plants. Furthermore, the crew will test pressure cuffs on legs to check whether they help relieve health problems. Astronauts will also see whether microalgae can help remove carbon dioxide from the air, providing food and oxygen for them. In the last year, SpaceX undertook almost a hundred launches. Their next launch is the Transporter-10 mission. SpaceX's official website says, "Transporter-10 is SpaceX's 10th dedicated smallsat rideshare mission. There will be 53 payloads on this flight, including CubeSats, MicroSats, and a hosted payload." (With inputs from agencies)

Rocket company SpaceX has moved its state of incorporation to Texas from Delaware, CEO Elon Musk said Wednesday (Feb 14) in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

"SpaceX has moved its state of incorporation from Delaware to Texas! If your company is still incorporated in Delaware, I recommend moving to another state as soon as possible," Musk said on the platform.

The move comes after the billionaire founder and electric vehicle maker Tesla's CEO said earlier this month that he will hold a shareholder vote to move Tesla's state of incorporation to Texas, where it has its headquarters, after a Delaware judge invalidated his $56-billion pay package.

"The public vote is unequivocally in favour of Texas! Tesla will move immediately to hold a shareholder vote to transfer state of incorporation to Texas," Musk said on X earlier this month after holding a poll where 87 per cent of respondents voted "yes" for Tesla's change of incorporation.

Elon Musk's SpaceX was fined $3,600 this month following an incident at its Washington state site that nearly resulted in an amputation, as per inspection records reviewed by Reuters.

This fine comes amid broader concerns about the company's safety practices, highlighted in a Reuters investigation that uncovered hundreds of previously unreported injuries among SpaceX workers since 2014.

According to state inspection records obtained by Reuters, inspectors found safety violations at SpaceX's Redmond, Washington, site prompted by worker complaints.

These violations included a lack of a comprehensive safety program and inadequate communication of work rules.

The incident leading to the fine involved a worker's foot being crushed by a falling roll of material, described as a "near amputation" by inspectors.

SpaceX managers reportedly assured state inspectors that the incident was isolated and promptly addressed.

However, inspectors noted that the site lacked safety measures such as requiring employees to wear steel-toe shoes, despite handling increasingly heavy materials.

This violation was considered serious given the potential risk of injury.

One worker, whose identity was not disclosed in the report, expressed concerns to inspectors about safety practices at the Redmond site.

They highlighted the prioritisation of production speed over safety and alleged deliberate setup errors to boost production rates, suggesting a systemic issue in safety oversight.

SpaceX's history of safety incidents and regulatory fines underscores broader challenges in worker safety regulation.

Despite fines totalling over $50,000 in the past decade, experts suggest that fines pose minimal deterrents for major companies due to legal caps and chronic understaffing of regulatory agencies.

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a major SpaceX contractor, has not commented on the recent incident or the broader safety concerns.

US billionaire Elon Musk on Sunday (Feb 11) shared plans to relocate one million people to Mars, without providing any timeline for the same. Reacting to a post on his social media platform X, Musk wrote, “We are mapping out a game plan to get a million people to Mars."

He also hinted at creating a local, self-sustained ecological system on Mars that could survive without any support from Earth. "Civilisation only passes the single-planet Great Filter when Mars can survive even if Earth supply ships stop coming," the US billionaire added.

He said this in response to a post which said “Starship is the largest rocket ever built and it’ll take us to Mars”.

Musk also said a day will come when a trip to Mars will be taken as a flight to another country in modern times.

This comes after Musk, who is also the founder of company SpaceX, last week said that Starship should be able to make it to the moon in less than five years. Musk boasted that the SpaceX Dragon spaceship will take humans to the furthest they have been from Earth in over half a century. He said in January that SpaceX will be able to send humans to the Moon within the next eight years.

Elon Musk reveals ‘game plan’ to shift a million people to Mars

Russian forces in occupied Ukraine are using terminals of Elon Musk’s satellite internet service Starlink, said Kyiv’s main military intelligence agency, on Sunday (Feb 11). The allegation by Ukrainian forces also comes amid media reports that Russia has been receiving Starlink internet terminals via an intermediary in the Middle East amid the ongoing war.

‘Systemic nature’

“Cases of the Russian occupiers’ use of the given devices have been registered. It is beginning to take on a systemic nature,” the Ukrainian defence ministry’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) quoted spokesman Andriy Yusov as saying.

In its post on Telegram, GUR also posted an audio clip of what it said was an exchange between two Russian soldiers that was intercepted by its forces, claiming it as proof of Starlink’s “systemic” use in the Russian-occupied territory.

The Ukrainian intelligence agency said Starlink terminals are being used by Russia’s 83rd Air Assault Brigade, which is fighting near the embattled towns of Klishchiivka and Andriivka in the partially occupied eastern region of Donetsk.

The Starlink terminals were rushed to help Ukraine during the initial days of the Russian invasion in February 2022 and have played a significant role in Kyiv’s battlefield communications.

Following media reports last week, Musk’s aerospace company, SpaceX, has said that it does not do any business with Russia’s government or military.

How is Russia accessing Starlink?

Starlink is the world’s first and largest satellite constellation which involves more than 2,000 satellites orbiting the Earth in communication with thousands of terminals on the ground to deliver broadband internet.

The audio clip which GUR posted on Telegram as evidence is said to be an exchange between two Russian soldiers discussing setting up the Starlink terminals. However, the Ukrainian agency did not say how Moscow’s forces were able to procure the terminals or if they were from another country or taken from Kyiv’s forces.

A report by Newsweek, an American weekly news magazine, citing a Ukrainian journalist and soldier said Russia’s military began delivering Starlink terminals en masse in occupied territories, referring to four regions of Ukraine that were illegally annexed by Russia in 2022 – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

SpaceX responds to reports

In response to the media reports last week, Starlink, in a statement on X said, “Starlink is not active in Russia, meaning service will not work in that country. SpaceX has never sold or marketed Starlink in Russia, nor has it shipped equipment to locations in Russia.”

“If SpaceX obtains knowledge that a Starlink terminal is being used by a sanctioned or unauthorized party, we investigate the claim and take actions to deactivate the terminal if confirmed,” it added.

SpaceX launches nasa's pace satellite to study earth's oceans, air and climate.

NASA launches new climate mission to study ocean

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) mission was successfully launched on Thursday (Feb 8).

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) mission was successfully launched on Thursday (Feb 8). A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the PACE spacecraft blasted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station’s Space Launch Complex 40. In a post on X, NASA said, "Today we put the PACE in space! The newest NASA Earth-observing satellite launched on Feb 8 at 1.33 am ET." "Separation confirmed—PACE is now flying free from its SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. We’ll be keeping PACE with the NASA Earth spacecraft throughout its mission as it studies our ocean and clouds," NASA said in a separate post. What is PACE? According to NASA, PACE will study ocean health, air quality, and the effects of a changing climate for the benefit of humanity. "The satellite’s hyperspectral ocean colour instrument will allow researchers to measure oceans and other waterbodies across a spectrum of ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared light," NASA said in a statement. "This will enable scientists to track the distribution of phytoplankton and – for the first time from space – identify which communities of these organisms are present on daily, global scales. Scientists and coastal resource managers can use the data to help forecast the health of fisheries, track harmful algal blooms, and identify changes in the marine environment," it added. Also read | Moon's serene facade is hiding a turbulent reality, reveals NASA-funded research The PACE spacecraft carries two polarimeter instruments, Hyper-Angular Rainbow Polarimeter #2 and Spectro-polarimeter for planetary exploration. These instruments will detect "how sunlight interacts with particles in the atmosphere, giving researchers new information on atmospheric aerosols and cloud properties, as well as air quality at local, regional, and global scales," the statement said. Separation confirmed—PACE is now flying free from its @SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. We’ll be #KeepingPACE with the @NASAEarth spacecraft throughout its mission as it studies our ocean and clouds. pic.twitter.com/dhPgQSuPCM — NASA (@NASA) February 8, 2024 × Karen St. Germain, director of the Earth Science Division, Science Mission Directorate at NASA, said that the mission will profoundly advance knowledge of the ocean's role in the climate cycle. "As an open-source science mission with early adopters ready to use its research and data, PACE will accelerate our understanding of the Earth system and help NASA deliver actionable science, data, and practical applications to help our coastal communities and industries address rapidly evolving challenges," Germain added. 'PACE will help us learn like never before' Reacting to the mission's successful launch, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said that PACE "will help us learn, like never before, how particles in our atmosphere and our oceans can identify key factors impacting global warming." The mission is being managed by NASA Goddard, which also built and tested the spacecraft and the ocean colour instrument. “Missions like this are supporting the Biden-Harris Administration’s climate agenda and helping us answer urgent questions about our changing climate,” Nelson added.

The world's wealthiest person has previously smoked marijuana in public and has said that he has a prescription for ketamine. People close to Musk, 52, said his drug use is ongoing, especially his consumption of ketamine, and that they are concerned it could cause a health crisis, the WSJ report said. SpaceX and Tesla officials upset over Elon Musk's alleged drug use

Elon Musk has responded to media reports claiming that the billionaire had been observed taking drugs by people around him and that it had affected his work. Musk took to his social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) and said "not even trace quantities" of drugs were found in his system.

The Tesla founder was responding to an excerpt from the Wall Street Journal report where the publication questioned Musk's behaviour after smoking marijuana at Joe Rogan's popular podcast show in 2018. The report added that Musk's conduct had resulted in employees at SpaceX being randomly tested for drugs.

"After that one puff with Rogan, I agreed, at NASA’s request, to do 3 years of random drug testing. Not even trace quantities were found of any drugs or alcohol," said Musk.

'That one puff with Rogan': Elon Musk responds to drug use claims amid backlash

Rocket and satellite maker SpaceX sued a US labour board on Thursday (Jan 4) while blocking its case in which the company was accused of illegally firing employees. The employees, who lost their jobs, were reported to have sent a letter to company executives in which they called its CEO Elon Musk, “a distraction and embarrassment”.

In a lawsuit which was filed in the federal court of Brownsville, Texas, it was claimed by Space X that the structure of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which had filed a complaint against the company on Wednesday (Jan 3) - violates the constitution of the United States.

The NLRB alleged that federal labour law was violated by Space X by firing eight workers in 2022 after they signed a letter in which they accused Musk of making sexist comments, which were against the company policies. The case is set to be headed by an administrative judge as well as a five-member board, which was appointed by the US president. The decision of the board can be appealed in federal court.

In its lawsuit, SpaceX claimed that because federal law only permits the removal of administrative judges on the basis of a cause and not at will, the structure of NLRB is unconstitutional. The lawsuit is aimed at blocking the NLRB case from moving forward.

Recently, SpaceX utilised a similar tactic for blocking an administrative case by the US Department of Justice, which had claimed that the company illegally refused to hire asylum recipients and refugees.

The judge said that, as per the US constitution, the president and not the attorney general appoints the administrative judges at the justice department.

The NLRB is already dealing with a similar lawsuit filed by a Starbucks employee who opposed the unionisation of the store in New York where she was employed. In October, the board was sued by the worker after it denied her petition for an election so that the union could be dissolved.

SpaceX files case against US agency over accusation of firing workers critical of Musk

Elon Musk's SpaceX is facing scrutiny from the US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for wrongfully terminating eight employees, who circulated a letter criticising the CEO, calling him a "distraction and embarrassment".

The allegation against SpaceX

A regional official with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has charged SpaceX with violating the workers' rights to join forces and advocate for better working conditions, a fundamental right protected by federal labour law.

In a letter circulated by the employees in June 2022, they focused on Musk's posts on X, formerly Twitter, since 2020, some of which were deemed sexually suggestive.

Also read | Mask mandate reinstated in New York City hospitals as COVID-19 cases rise

The missive contended that Musk's statements clashed with the company's policies on the diversity and workplace ethics, and prompted SpaceX to condemn CEO Elon Musk's behaviour.

The NLRB complaint goes beyond the terminations, accusing SpaceX of subjecting employees to interrogations about the letter, disparaging those involved, and issuing threats of termination for similar activities.

As per Reuters, SpaceX is yet to comment on these allegations.

What if SpaceX is found guilty?

SpaceX now has the option of settling. However, if it chooses to not settle, the case will be heard by an administrative judge, with the hearing scheduled for March 5. If the NLRB finds that the job terminations violated labour law, it can order reinstatement of the fired employees and grant them back pay. Furthermore, if the rocket and satellite maker is found in violation, it could also face steeper penalties in future cases before the board.

Toxic culture towards women

Deborah Lawrence, one of the terminated employees, said that SpaceX has what she describes as a "toxic culture," particularly towards women. She emphasised that they wrote the open letter "to leadership not out of malice, but because we cared about the mission and the people around us."

This development is not an isolated incident in Elon Musk's 'questionable' business practices. In November, Reuters reportedly unveiled over 600 previously unreported workplace injuries at SpaceX, ranging from crushed limbs to electrocutions. Musk's other ventures, including X (formerly Twitter) and Tesla, have also faced their share of labour disputes and allegations of discrimination, and illegal firings.

The US has accomplished another milestone in space exploration. This time a top SpaceX Falcon heavy US military's secretive X 37b Robot space plane blasted off from Florida. More in our report.

US launches secretive X-37-B robot spaceplane from Florida

SpaceX's Falcon Heavy, the highly secretive rocket, blasted into space carrying the US military's clandestine X-37B drone to a research mission.

The eagerly anticipated lift-off happened after weeks of delays. It unfolded at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 8:07 pm Eastern Time (0107 GMT Friday). A real-time live stream of the launch was shared on SpaceX's website.

Where is the spacecraft headed?

A veil of secrecy surrounds the uncrewed and autonomously functioning X-37B spacecraft, and it is unknown where exactly it is headed on its seventh mission.

The Pentagon has shared minimal insights into the spacecraft and its latest endeavours. Initially, it was scheduled for launch on December 7.

In its statement, SpaceX only referred to it by the Pentagon's mission code name — USSF-52, and said "Falcon Heavy launched the USSF-52 mission to orbit from Launch Complex 39A."

What do we know about the heavily secret mission?

While the Pentagon remains tight-lipped about the specifics, it did disclose that the X-37B's seventh mission involves "multiple cutting-edge experiments."

Last month, the US Department of the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office in a statement said: "These tests include operating the reusable spaceplane in new orbital regimes, experimenting with future space domain awareness technologies, and investigating the radiation effects on materials provided by NASA."

Significantly, this marks the first time the X-37B has hitched a ride on the Falcon Heavy, renowned as one of the most powerful operational rockets, capable of ferrying payloads up to 26,700 kilogrammes (around 58,900 pounds) into the depths of space.

As per AFP, the X-37B US space drone resembles a downsized version of the now-retired manned space shuttles and has dimensions akin to a small bus. With a length of 30 feet (nine meters) and a wingspan of 15 feet (4.57 m), it harnesses solar panels for propulsion. Previous missions of the X-37B have involved conducting tests for NASA, including an exploration of the impact of radiation on seeds and other materials.

The Falcon Heavy's launch comes just two weeks after China deployed its enigmatic robotic space plane, Shenlong on December 14.

According to China's state news agency, Xinhua, "During this period, reusable technology verification and space science experiments will be carried out as planned to provide technical support for the peaceful use of space."
