The International Space Station had a close shave on Thursday as it narrowly avoided crashing into a piece of space junk from a Russian anti-satellite weapons test. NASA confirmed that the ISS had to quickly maneuver in order to avoid the orbital debris. The space debris originated from an anti-satellite weapons test that ended up destroying the Soviet-era Cosmos 1408 satellite in November 2021. A rough estimate states that there were around 1500 pieces of debris from the incident.

"The crew was never in any danger and the maneuver had no impact on station operations," read a statement released by NASA about the avoidance maneuver. "Without the maneuver, it was predicted that the fragment could have passed within around a half-mile from the station."

This was not the first time that the ISS had to perform such avoidance maneuvers in the recent past as they had to avoid space debris in November and December of 2021. Any collision with space debris can result in massive damage to the system and also the astronauts inside the ISS.

Russian space agency Roscosmos posted a video on Telegram of the entire process as they used an uncrewed Progress 81 cargo ship to move the orbiting lab away from the path of the debris.

"I confirm that at 22.03 Moscow time, the engines of the Russian Progress MS-20 transport cargo ship carried out an unscheduled maneuver to avoid a dangerous approach of the International Space Station with a fragment of the Kosmos-1408 spacecraft," Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin said.

Narrow escape! International Space Station dodges space debris from Russian anti-satellite test

Chinese researchers caused a massive stir in the scientific community when they claimed that the “Sky Eye” telescope has picked up signals which they believed originated from aliens. However, that claim has now been questioned by an American researcher. Dan Werthimer, which works for Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) at the University of Berkeley, California and a co-author on the research project which first spotted the signal, believes that the signals are actually from “human interference”. The news about the signals coming from aliens was reported by a lot of media outlets after it appeared on the official newspaper of China's Ministry of Science and Technology.

The claim found more footing as the narrow-band radio signals found by the radio telescope are not found from natural sources, but Werthimer said they were most probably artificial signals.

"The big problem, and the problem in this particular case, is that we're looking for signals from extraterrestrials, but what we find is a zillion signals from terrestrials," Werthimer told Live Science.

"They're very weak signals, but the cryogenic receivers on the telescopes are super sensitive and can pick up signals from cell phones, television, radar and satellites — and there are more and more satellites in the sky every day. If you're kind of new in the game, and you don't know all these different ways that interference can get into your data and corrupt it, it's pretty easy to get excited."

Despite the claims by the authorities, the team of scientists have remained quite cautious in their approach and have keep the possibility open of the signals not being from alien sources.

"These are several narrow-band electromagnetic signals different from the past, and the team is currently working on further investigation," Zhang Tongjie, head scientist at the China Extraterrestrial Civilization Research Group at Beijing Normal University, said in the report. "The possibility that the suspicious signal is some kind of radio interference is also very high, and it needs to be further confirmed and ruled out. This may be a long process."

Alien signal or human interference? Researcher using 'Sky Eye' telescope explains

In a recently released photo of Mars by NASA, a self-proclaimed UFO expert has claimed to have spotted an unusual creature on the giant red planet. Share his discovery on the UFO Sightings Daily website, Scott Waring, a self-proclaimed alien researcher found something strange between the rock formations on the surface of the red planet. The Taiwan-based extraterrestrial expert claimed that it resembled an ‘elephant-like-creature’ and that its existence was concrete proof of life on Mars.

“Today, I found some interesting ancient alien artifacts in a Mars photo,” Scott Waring wrote on UFO Sightings Daily.

“The most outstanding artefact is a statue of an elephant-like creature with a short trunk. It is sitting down and turned looking to the left,” he said describing the features of this unknown creature in his June 10 report.

“There is also a huge face with thick lips, open mouth and a round nose, two eyes,” adding, “Proof of life on Mars, without a doubt.”

Waring’s observations came days after NASA’s Perseverance rover released photos of the Mars where several people spotted a ‘thermal blanket.

James Webb Space Telescope is all set to take humanity on a unique journey as the most advansed telescope takes steps towards becoming functional. The first full-colour images taken by humanity's fresh pair of 'eye in the sky' are soon going to be available to all.

NASA, European Space Agency (ESA) and Canadian Space Agency (CSA) are getting ready to release the pics. The images are going to be released next month.

July 12 is the big day!

The images will be released at 8 pm according to Indian Standard Time (10:30 am EDT).

James Webb Space Telescope has been undergoing a six month preparation period in which its instruments are being calibrated and its various mirrors are being carefully aligned to give us the best peek into the Universe.

The scientific community got a scare after a small meteoroid struck one of the mirrors of the telescopes in May. NASA has said that this created a small but noticeable effect on the data coming from the telescope. Realignment of the mirror was carried out.

In spite of the micro-meteoroid impact, NASA said the space telescope was “performing at a level that exceeds all mission requirements.”

This means that we may be in for a treat once first pictures from the telescope are released!

In the search for some form of microbial life on planet Mars, NASA's Perseverance Mars rover found human trash on the surface of the planet. During one of its scheduled inspections of the planet, the Mars rover spotted landing debris caught in a jagged rock.

Upon close examination, the trash was found to be a thermal material that the American space agency commonly uses in order to protect the Perseverance spacecraft from extreme temperatures when they have made their journey to Mars, plunging through the Martian atmosphere.

Mars has been favourite candidate of humankind to search for life just next door in our solar system. Martians attacking Earth has been a recurrent theme in movies and books. The theme is so popular that it almost appears that we secretly wish our planet to be invaded by Martians.

So how about an idea that someone is staring at us from the surface of the red planet? The idea sure sends a chill down our spine as it suggests that while we were busy understanding our neighbour by sending spacecrafts, someone (or something!) on the planet instead had its eyes at us.

Latest photograph clicked by European Space Agency (ESA) orbitter sure looks like it!

But thrill seekers among us need to hold their horses for a bit as this photo is of a massive crater on the surface of Mars.

That does not mean it doesn't look scary.

The crater is almost the shape of an eye and complete with a blackened region at the centre. The crater is 30 kilometres across and is located in a region in southern hemisphere of Mars. The region is named Aonia Terra.

This region on Mars features many craters formed due to massive impacts 4 billion years ago. At that time, the solar system was in its infancy and planets were being formed. These infant planets were being battered by huge space rocks that were roaming around in the newly forming solar system.

Earth was battered as well. But much of the evidence of such 'bombardment' was erased to to various natural processes that have been going on for billions of years.

Is someone looking at us from Mars? This creepy photo sure looks like it

Scientists have for the first time used satellite data to detect a major offshore leak of the potent greenhouse gas methane, according to peer-reviewed research.

The findings add a crucial tool to an expanding space-based arsenal for pinpointing previously invisible methane plumes from the oil and gas industry.

Fossil fuel operations globally emitted about 120 million tonnes of the planet-warming gas in 2020, nearly one-third of all methane emissions from human activity, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Also read | Climate talks test global resolve on warming

The new study in the journal Environmental Science and Technology Letters identified a plume from an oil and gas production platform in the Gulf of Mexico that spewed some 40,000 tonnes over a 17-day period in December.

The platform, near Campeche in southern Mexico, is in one of the country's biggest oil producing fields.

"Our results demonstrate how satellites can detect methane plumes from offshore infrastructure," senior author Luis Guanter, a professor at Valencia Polytechnic University, said in a statement.

"It opens the door to systematic monitoring of industrial emissions from individual offshore platforms."

Satellite-based methods for spotting methane leaks over land have developed rapidly in the last few years, training an uncomfortable spotlight on regulators and industry.

But equivalent techniques have been lacking for leaks from offshore oil and gas operations, which account for about 30 per cent of global production.

Huge short-term potential

Up to now, ocean water's capacity to absorb short-wave infrared radiation has limited the amount of reflected light reaching space-based sensors.

Guanter and colleagues overcame this problem with a new method for measuring solar radiation bouncing off the water's surface, called Sun-glint observation mode.

Methane is responsible for roughly 30 per cent of the global rise in temperatures to date.

While far less abundant in the atmosphere than CO2, it is about 28 times more powerful as a greenhouse gas on a century-long timescale. Over a 20-year time frame, it is 80 times more potent.

Methane lingers in the atmosphere for only a decade, compared to hundreds or thousands of years for CO2.

This means a sharp reduction in emissions could shave several tenths of a degree Celsius off of projected global warming by mid-century, helping keep alive the Paris Agreement goal of capping Earth's average temperature increase to 1.5 Celsius, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

Last year saw a record jump in the atmospheric concentration of methane, US government scientists reported in April.

Methane is generated by the production, transport and use of fossil fuels, but also from the decay of organic matter in wetlands, and as a by-product of livestock digestion in agriculture.

Scientists have for the first time used satellite data to detect a major offshore leak of the potent greenhouse gas methane, according to peer-reviewed research.

Also read | Climate talks test global resolve on warming The new study in the journal Environmental Science and Technology Letters identified a plume from an oil and gas production platform in the Gulf of Mexico that spewed some 40,000 tonnes over a 17-day period in December. The platform, near Campeche in southern Mexico, is in one of the country's biggest oil producing fields. "Our results demonstrate how satellites can detect methane plumes from offshore infrastructure," senior author Luis Guanter, a professor at Valencia Polytechnic University, said in a statement. "It opens the door to systematic monitoring of industrial emissions from individual offshore platforms." Satellite-based methods for spotting methane leaks over land have developed rapidly in the last few years, training an uncomfortable spotlight on regulators and industry. But equivalent techniques have been lacking for leaks from offshore oil and gas operations, which account for about 30 per cent of global production. Watch | New Zealand's new climate draft aims at countering Methane emissions Huge short-term potential Up to now, ocean water's capacity to absorb short-wave infrared radiation has limited the amount of reflected light reaching space-based sensors. Also read | We can’t drill our way to energy security Last year saw a record jump in the atmospheric concentration of methane, US government scientists reported in April. Methane is generated by the production, transport and use of fossil fuels, but also from the decay of organic matter in wetlands, and as a by-product of livestock digestion in agriculture. At last year's COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, more than 100 nations agreed under the Global Methane Pledge to reduce emissions 30 per cent by 2030. Climate: Offshore methane gas leak spotted from space

Space is a dangerous place. Anything can happen anytime. The recent incident with James Webb Space Telescope seems to have proved this. In only a few months after launch, the new space observatory of NASA has experienced its first noticeable micrometeoroid impact, media reports said. But the agency seems to be unfazed. On Wednesday (June 8), NASA announced that the next-generation observatory sustained some impact from small pieces of space debris for the first time. There is nothing to worry, the agency said, while adding that it will not impact the $10 billion observatory's schedule and scientific legacy.

In the statement, Lee Feinberg, Webb optical telescope element manager, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, said, "With Webb's mirrors exposed to space, we expected that occasional micrometeoroid impacts would gracefully degrade telescope performance over time. Since launch, we have had four smaller measurable micrometeoroid strikes that were consistent with expectations, and this one more recently that is larger than our degradation predictions assumed."

The telescope will still perform properly, NASA said. Paul Geithner, technical deputy project manager, NASA Goddard, said, "We always knew that Webb would have to weather the space environment, which includes harsh ultraviolet light and charged particles from the sun, cosmic rays from exotic sources in the galaxy, and occasional strikes by micrometeoroids within our solar system. We designed and built Webb with performance margin — optical, thermal, electrical, mechanical — to ensure it can perform its ambitious science mission even after many years in space."

No need to panic? James Webb Space Telescope experiences micrometeoroid impact for first time

The Hubble Space Telescope has been crucial in charting out the universe and since its launch in 1990, the telescope has sent a huge number of pictures for NASA to study. Over the years, the pictures have helped NASA and a number of researchers to understand the universe much better and with time, the technology has also advanced by leaps and bounds. An international team of scientists have now released what is being considered as the largest near-infrared image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. It covers a huge amount of area, and the researchers believe that the image can help in understanding star-forming regions of the universe and extremely distant galaxies.

The researchers at the University of Toronto came up with a new technique known as Drift and Shift (DASH) to catch the image and according to their study, it was able to create an image almost eight times larger than the normal pictures taken by the Hubble telescope.

According to a paper to be published in The Astrophysical Journal, the technique helps the Hubble to take eight pictures per orbit instead of one picture resulting in a massive increase in data and the images are finally put together to create a panoramic view.

Scientists have spotted unusual radio waves about 1,300 light-years from Earth. This strange “pulse” is being emitted from a neutron star, which rotates extremely slowly, completing one rotation every 76 seconds. The team went through old data from that region of space and found similar signals had been emitted before but had been missed by previous research. They say that this neutron star has the characteristics of a "pulsar" or even a "magnetar." Pulsars are very dense and the remains of a collapsed giant star. They emit radio waves from their poles and can be measured from Earth as the star rotates.

Manisha Caleb, a lecturer at the University of Sydney and MeerTRAP team traced the strange pulse to the distant Cela-X 1 region of the Milky Way. It lasted for around 300 milliseconds. When they went further from that region, they found records of more pulses.

Scientists are now calling it PSR J0941-4046. They think it’s a new type of radio-emitting galactic neutron star.

The team, led by members of The European Research Council-funded MeerTRAP (More Transients and Pulsars) group at The University of Manchester, say it is a unique discovery as it resides in the neutron star graveyard where they do not expect to see any radio emission at all.

The discovery was made using the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa and published in the journal, Nature Astronomy.

Neutron stars are extremely dense remnants of a supernova explosion of a massive star. They can produce beams of radio waves which sweep around the sky as the neutron star spins, producing regular flashes like cosmic lighthouses.

Scientists have so far found 3000 of these in our own Galaxy. However, the new discovery is unlike anything seen so far. The team thinks that it could belong to the theorised class of ultra-long period magnetars with extremely strong magnetic fields.

“Amazingly we only detect radio emission from this source for 0.5% of its rotation period. This means that it is very fortuitous that the radio beam intersected with the Earth. It is therefore likely that there are many more of these very slowly spinning sources in the Galaxy which has important implications for how neutron stars are born and age,” Caleb said in a statement.

The search for nearby hospitable planets has been a long-time pursuit of scientists around the world and China has now proposed a new mission that can take an unconventional route to possibly achieve the goal. The mission, known as Closeby Habitable Exoplanet Survey (CHES), will be measuring the impact of orbiting planets on their nearby stars and in turn, try to understand if the planet has the potential to sustain life. The mission will be carried out by the help of a spacecraft that will be gathering the data and it will use a method called micro-arcsecond relative astrometry.

The telescope will calculate the masses of the exoplanets with the help of their reference stars.

"If we have to conduct a successful human spaceflight and sustain it in India, we need a strong pool of doctors to get involved in the Human Spaceflight mission. There are opportunities in not just emergency medicine, but also for doctors in other domains" said Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO). Addressing a gathering of Doctors from across medical domains and ISRO scientists, he touched upon how medical professionals could work together on Spacecraft design for India's highly-anticipated Gaganyaan(Human Spaceflight) mission.

Organised at the ISRO Headquarters in Bengaluru, the event Health-Quality Upgradation Enabled through Space Technology (Health-QUEST) was aimed at percolating best practices in ISRO’s quality domain into emergency healthcare and critical healthcare departments for reducing mortality rates.

Notably, even the best healthcare systems in the world have an error rate of 8-10 per cent, whereas the aerospace industry and rocketry operate at zero per cent error, as even the most minor error can prove catastrophic. Speaking at the event, Dr Alexander Thomas, president, Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI), emphasised the importance of absorbing and implementing the stringent safety standards of the aerospace industry in the healthcare sector (particularly in the hospital emergency wards, accident wards and critical care units).

Listing out the areas of cooperation between ISRO and the Indian healthcare sector, he touched upon geo-mapping of accident and emergency care centres across the country, in order to have accurate information on the type of services and level of care available in the healthcare facilities. Need a strong pool of doctors to collaborate with Human Spaceflight Programme: ISRO Chairman Somanath

The plans to build a civilisation or at least a colony on the Mars or Moon has been a long-time idea for both scientists and entrepreneurs. While the idea has always existed, the logistics have been the main problem, but it seems that we may have a major solution. A new set of experiences have revealed that a combination of dust from moon or Mars and saltwater can be create the perfect material to create buildings in space. In order to produce the desired product, the mixture needs to be heated at a high temperature so that they create a solid structure mimicking a brick.

The observation was made by Ranajay Ghosh and his team at the University of Central Florida. They conducted an experiment to see if regolith – dust from moon rocks – can be used to create a sturdy structure. However, the problem will be finding the heat source in order to bake them properly.

This is the not the first paper to suggest this phenomenon as research published in Materials Today Bio said that blood can actually be used as a binding agent to create structures with space dust.

How to make buildings in space? Dust from the Moon and Mars can help

In the hope of grabbing the attention of aliens, scientists are planning to send illustrations of human body parts to space.

According to Soch Fact Check, NASA is not working on a broadcast to launch images of naked humans into space. There have been misleading reports earlier which suggested that the experiment is being conducted at the behest of the US space agency.

Moreover, this experiment is not being funded by NASA. It appears to have stemmed from a study recently published in arXiv — an online database of non-peer-reviewed publications — about a hypothetical means to send a message to potential alien lifeforms somewhere in the Milky Way galaxy.

The proposal, "A Beacon in the Galaxy" (BITG), was presented by 11 researchers from a range of institutions, including NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The scientists believe that a proper contact can be established with another life form, which has been tried and failed for 150 years, by sending a pixelated illustration of a naked woman and man waving “hello”, in an attempt to look inviting.

Apart from the pixelated illustrations, the scientists have also included a portrayal of gravity and DNA.

The scientists believe a binary-coded message is most likely to be understood by aliens.

“Though the concept of mathematics in human terms is potentially unrecognizable to extra-terrestrial intelligence, binary is likely universal across all intelligence,” the scientists said in their official project document.

“Binary is the simplest form of mathematics as it involves only two opposing states: zero and one, yes or no, black or white, mass or empty space.”

They added, “The proposed message includes basic mathematical and physical concepts to establish a universal means of communication followed by information on the biochemical composition of life on Earth, the Solar System’s time-stamped position in the Milky Way relative to known globular clusters, as well as digitized depictions of the Solar System, and Earth’s surface.

Notably, this isn’t the first that scientists have tried to beam naked pictures of humans into space.

The Pioneer 10 in 1972, and the Pioneer 11 in 1973—missions both contained illustrations of naked humans attached to their antennas, ready and waiting for any aliens that may like a little peep.

Note: The original version of the story 'NASA will launch naked pictures of humans to space to attract aliens' have been amended to rectify an erroneous impression which suggested that the US space agency was sending images of human body parts. Necessary changes have now been made to reflect the updated information.

James Webb Space Space Telescope may be humanity's future 'eye in the sky' but good ol' Hubble telescope still has a place in our hearts. Hubble has faithfuly relayed images of distant stars and galaxies to Earth for three decades. The space telescope does not cease to make us awestruck, amused and appreciate the endless beauty of the cosmos.

Latest image clicked by Hubble is such. While it may not be as exciting as a colliding galaxy, exploding star but this image tells us about our future.

The photo shows an elliptical galaxy called NGC 474. It is 100 million light-years away from Earth. It is about two and a half times larger than Milky Way Galaxy. The galaxy may not have a beautiful spiral structure like our own galaxy. It just looks like a wisp or smokey haze. But studying NGC 474 galaxy is vital because it gives us glimpses of our on future.

As much as we love our Milky Way Galaxy, it is on collision course with an even bigger galaxy. Andromeda galaxy is racing towards Milky Way at an unimaginable speed.

We can breathe a little sigh of relief though because the galactic collision will take place billions of years from now. This collision of galaxies may not be as apocalyptic as movies have us believe. But immense gravities of Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies will tear material out from the cosmic dance partners. After a merger process that will last billions of years still, both galaxies will lose their spiral shapes and the resulting 'Milkdromeda' galaxy will have an elliptical shape just like NGC 474 which Hubble has clicked!

American aerospace giant Boeing's Starliner capsule was heading for the International Space Station Thursday, in a critical uncrewed test flight that followed years of failures and false starts.

The spacecraft encountered some propulsion troubles early in its journey, with two thrusters responsible for orbital maneuvering failing for unclear reasons but NASA officials said the mission remained on track.

The Orbital Test Flight 2 (OFT-2) mission blasted off at 6:54 pm Eastern Time (2254 GMT) from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with the spaceship fixed atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket.

Its success is key to repairing Boeing's frayed reputation after the first bid, back in 2019, failed to dock with the ISS due to software bugs one that led to it burning too much fuel to reach its destination, and another that could have destroyed the vehicle during re-entry.

A second try was scheduled in August of last year, but Starliner was rolled back from the launchpad to address sticky valves that weren't opening as they should, and the capsule was eventually sent back to the factory for fixes.

At a post-launch press conference, senior NASA official Steve Sitch said: "Overall, the spacecraft is doing really well," but he also flagged two anomalies that engineers were now working to understand.

The first was that two out of 12 orbital maneuvering and attitude control (OMAC) thrusters located on Starliner's aft side had initially fired but then shut down, forcing a third to take up their slack.

The second issue was that a device known as a sublimator responsible for cooling the spacecraft was initially slow to get started.

NASA is looking to certify Starliner as a second "taxi" service for its astronauts to the space station, a role that Elon Musk's SpaceX has provided since succeeding in a test mission for its Dragon capsule in 2020.

Boeing's Starliner encounters propulsion problems on way to ISS

NASA's InSight lander is headed for a dusty demise. Spacecraft is losing power due to dust on its solar panels. However, NASA will keep using the spacecraft’s seismometer to register marsquakes until the power peters out, likely in July.

NASA Mars lander's mission coming to an end, but why?

Our planet is running out of resources and saying that would be considered an understatement now but the quest for modernization and to meet ever-growing human population more resources are needed now but our world has only finite number of reserves. The shortage of precious metals especially those required for making items like computers, cell phones and batteries are already affecting the production lines as well as global supply chains.

How feasible is mining in Space?

The resource hungry humanity is now aiming for space. The US, China is leading the hunt as asteroid mining may soon become a reality.

Aurora borealis is a beautiful dance of light across the sky. If you want to observe this brilliant natural wonder, you have to go to countries near the North Pole, Scandinavian countries preferably.

But do you know that as the aurora dances across the sky it produces a ghostly sound. An investigation into this suggests that this eerie sound is produced even aurora isn't visible in the sky.

This sound associated with the aurora has been mentioned in regional folktales and accounts shared by the local population.

Unto Laine, ac acoustics engineer from Alto University in Finland has been able to record these ghostly sounds. At EUROREGIO/BNAM2022 Joint Acoustics Conference in Denmark, Laine presented his findings.

"This cancels the argument that auroral sounds are extremely rare and that the aurora borealis should be exceptionally bright and lively," Laine says.

These sounds are apparently produced even when aurora isn't visible.

Researchers have also identified where exactly these sounds come from in the atmosphere. It was found that these sounds are produced at the altitude of about 70 to 100 metres. Such a low altitude has surprised scientists since aurora results from interaction of solar particles with Earth's magnetic field very high up.

There is no shortage of theories regarding UFOs or Unidentified Flying Objects, and it has always been associated with the idea of alien spacecrafts. However, it is no longer just conspiracy theories as two top defense intelligence officials will be testifying in front of a House Intelligence subcommittee about the information that the government currently possesses about UFOs.

This is the first public hearing concerning UFOs in almost 50 years and this comes almost a year after a government report which contained 140 instances of "unidentified aerial phenomena" which were reported by the US military pilots since 2004. However, there is a slight twist to the story.

The motive of this hearing has more to do with national security than alien life.

There were a few reports of flying objects which showed speeds and movements beyond existing technologies, but the overall focus will remain on increasing security as well aviation safety.

While the possibility to alien activity was not completely denied, the report focused more on the possibility of some secret technology which was developed by other countries.

According to AFP. the report, which was compiled by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and a Navy-led task force the Pentagon formed in 2020, will be examined once again.

The mysteries of the universe continue to fascinate scientists all around the world and one of the major points of contention over the years have been the placement of the galaxies all around the cosmos. While the existing theories suggest that there is no pattern when it comes to the various galaxies, a Vice report said that a new study shows that small galaxies create disk-like structures around their host galaxies which allows them to maintain a certain structure in their entirety.

Two researchers from the University of Nottingham have suggested that the smaller galaxies are creating ‘invisible walls’ out of a new class of particles called symmetrons and that is the maintaining the core structure of all the massive bodies existing in the universe. The study is mainly based on dark matter, but no previous study suggests this kind of behaviour from any dark matter.

The study states that the smaller galaxies are reacting to the gravitational pull of the bigger galaxies and as a result, that allows them to stay in a proper orbit. However, the new observations in the study can finally answer the question of why they sometimes create unusual orbits for themselves.

Also read | Russian invasion will have grave consequences, says Ukrainian minister Senik Two researchers from the University of Nottingham have suggested that the smaller galaxies are creating ‘invisible walls’ out of a new class of particles called symmetrons and that is the maintaining the core structure of all the massive bodies existing in the universe. Gold is the most sought-after precious metal in the world. Sure there are metals rarer than gold but the yellow metal has enticed humankind for more than a millennium.

So how about a star made of gold? The concept is certainly novel for us dwellers of solar system which has hydrogen-helium-based star.

So this 'gold standard' star is named HD 222925. It is 1,460 light-years away from Earth. It's not completely made of gold but large number of elements. Scientists have been able to find 65 separate element in this star. That's the maximum number of elements found in a single object outside solar system. The star is at the end of its life as a red giant.

"To the best of my knowledge, that's a record for any object beyond our Solar System. And what makes this star so unique is that it has a very high relative proportion of the elements listed along the bottom two-thirds of the periodic table. We even detected gold," said astronomer Ian Roederer of the University of Michigan.

"These elements were made by the rapid neutron capture process. That's really the thing we're trying to study: the physics in understanding how, where and when those elements were made."

The Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) successfully completed the maiden static test fire of its 'HS200' rocket booster at 7:20am on Friday at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. This booster is a modified, human-rated version of the existing "S200" booster that is used on the Indian space agency's heaviest rocket, the GSLV Mk3. Friday's test is in line with the human-rating process, where the agency modifies the GSLV Mk3 rocket and its components for carrying astronauts. Simply put, the GSLV Mk3 rocket is a cargo hauler, meant to take satellites to space. It is now being modified and tested to be safe and suitable for carrying humans to space as part of India's Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight Programme.

According to Dr Nair, their teams had been working on making changes to the S200 rocket booster since 2019 and had improvised on small components such as ignitors, digital control electronics, and even went on to develop ISRO's largest electro-mechanical actuators. In this case, the electro-mechanical actuator will be used to steer the S200 booster's thrust and eventually the rocket's travel by adjusting the nozzle's direction. Friday's ground test involved the static firing of one solid booster for a duration of 135 seconds.

"Reducing chamber pressure, ensuring it is proof-leak, robust, and achieve higher margins, etc., are some of the changes we made to the S200 to increase its reliability as part of the human-rating process," Dr Nair said when queried about the difference between the existing S200 and the human-rated version. He also added that nearly 700 parameters (such as chamber pressure, thrust, shock, vibration, etc.) were monitored during the test and that everything turned out perfect. However, he said that the entire set of data would have to be closely examined to determine if another test of the same booster would be required.

Are we alone in this vast cosmos? if not, then how and when would we contact an extraterrestrial being. Given the vastness of the universe, there is little doubt that there are indeed other intelligent life forms out there but perhaps they also might be asking the same questions how to contact other civilizations.

Reaching out to the aliens: Astronomers to relay message in space

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has plans to build a pair of identical satellites dubbed 'Disha' to study the upper atmosphere. While placed in low earth orbit (nearly 500km above the earth's surface), the spacecraft is meant to study the physics and chemistry of the upper atmosphere, including the distribution of temperature, density, and chemical constituents, and the chemical reactions that occur there. ISRO officials revealed this at a National Meeting on Aeronomy Research, themed "Science of Near-Earth Space and its Applications".

Elaborating on the significance of a mission such as Disha, Dr Shantanu, Scientific Secretary, ISRO, said that the upper atmosphere was the first region of space to feel the wrath of the sun, before it percolates down to lower altitudes. He added that the mission's scientific objective is to perform space weather studies and solar-terrestrial interactions, so as to have advance warning regarding critical space-based weather events. "Once such warnings are available, we can take preventive action to safeguard our space assets." Disha will be a twin satellite aeronomy mission where both satellites carry similar payloads. However, the Disha H satellite will be placed at an 85-degree high inclination from the earth's equator, whereas the Disha L satellite will be placed at a 25-degree low inclination, "he explained.

Speaking at the event, Dr Somanath, Chairman, ISRO, emphasised the need for space-based observations such as Disha. He pointed out that ISRO had sounding rockets (small rockets that carry light payloads to conduct upper atmospheric experiments) that could reach up to 500km in space. However, he indicated that sounding rockets only offered a very short-term observational capability, as opposed to the long-term presence and observation capability of dedicated satellites in orbit. He urged the participating scientists to look at upper atmospheric research and how the benefits and findings from the same can be used for the benefit of India. Making a mention of the information gained from global missions. He urged his scientists to ponder over what ISRO's contribution was towards global knowledge and work towards contributing more.

While placed in low earth orbit (nearly 500km above the earth's surface), the spacecraft is meant to study the physics and chemistry of the upper atmosphere, including the distribution of temperature, density, and chemical constituents, and the chemical reactions that occur there.

NASA has detected a monster marsquake on Earth's neighbour. We already know that the red planet experiences quakes regularly. But this one, detected by NASA's InSight Mars Lander is mother of them all.

The marsquake was of 'magnitude 5 temblor'. It took place on May 4, 2022. The marsquake took place on 1222nd Martian day of the InSight lander's mission, said NASA in a press release.

Last most intense marsquake was of the magnitude 4.2 and it took place on August 25, 2021.

The latest 'monster' marsquake would be a medium-sized quake if it took place on Earth but on Mars, it is close to the "upper limit of what scientists hoped to see on Mars during InSight’s mission" said NASA.

“Since we set our seismometer down in December 2018, we’ve been waiting for ‘the big one,’” said Bruce Banerdt, InSight’s principal investigator at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which leads the mission. “This quake is sure to provide a view into the planet like no other. Scientists will be analyzing this data to learn new things about Mars for years to come.”

NASA's InSight lander landed on Mars in 2018. It has a very sensitive seismometer. Till now, InSight has recorded more than 1300 marsquakes.
