Day 2: Ishant Sharma strikes twice to restrict South Africa to 335

Skipper Virat Kohli scored a fighting 85 to keep India afloat on the day two of the second cricket Test against South Africa, here today.

Kohli held together India's innings with a classy unbeaten 85 which came off 130 balls and was studded with eight boundaries.

Hardik Pandya (11 not out) was giving Kohli company at the crease as India reached 183 for five in 61 overs in their first innings at stumps in reply to South Africa's 335 all out.

The duo added 19 runs for the unbeaten sixth wicket.

The visitors, who are down 0-1 in the three-match series, still trail South Africa by another 152 runs.

Barring Kohli, opener Murali Vijay scored a gritty 46 off 126 balls before being dismissed by left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj.

When rest of the Indian batsmen looked in little discomfort against the South African bowling attack, Kohli was at his positive best as he played his drives and pulls with consummate ease from the onset.

Kohli, who faced flak because of lack of runs in the first Test and his selection decisions in the ongoing match, paced his innings to perfection and attacked the Protea bowlers when opportunity came his way.

Together with Vijay, Kohli added 79 runs for the third wicket as India crossed 100 in the 33rd over.

But South Africa got the breakthrough soon when Vijay was caught behind off Maharaj (1/53).

Kohli, meanwhile, scored his 16th Test half-century off 68 balls and was inclusive of seven boundaries.

The skipper also added 25 runs with Rohit Sharma (10) for the fourth wicket.

But Rohit once again fell cheaply, out lbw to Kagiso Rabada (1/33). The batsman went for review but was given out on umpire's call with the ball clipping the top of middle stump.

Lungi Ngidi (1/26) then had Parthiv Patel (19) caught behind in the 54th over to reduce India to 164 for five.

Patel had put on 32 runs with Kohli for the fifth wicket but became Ngidi's maiden Test wicket just as the innings started to look stable.

Pandya then joined Kohli in the middle and the duo managed to see off the remainder of the session without any further loss.

Earlier in the post lunch session, Vijay and KL Rahul (10) started watchfully against South Africa's pacers. They added 28 runs for the opening stand.

Rahul had looked rusty, particularly against Morne Morkel's (1-24) bounce, and only ended up returning a catch, which the bowler grabbed in a diving effort to the left.

Immediately on the next ball, Cheteshwar Pujara was run- out for his career's first golden duck as he set off on a suicidal run and failed to beat Lungi Ngidi's throw from mid- on.

Vijay too had a couple nervy moments against Vernon Philander but managed to survive the spell. He then settled down to aid Kohli in India's recovery.

India crossed 50 in the 16th over as Kohli looked in good touch from the very start. He set off with a flurry of boundaries and quickly outscored Vijay. The duo put on 50 runs off 101 balls.

Ngidi bowled a fiery first four-over spell on Test debut, egged on by the home crowd, but he couldn't etch out a breakthrough before tea.

This was after South Africa were bowled out for 335 runs (113.5 overs) in their first innings just before lunch. R Ashwin finished with 4/113 and Ishant Sharma took 3/46 as the Proteas lost their last seven wickets for 89 runs.

Starting from overnight 269/6, Faf du Plessis (63) and Keshav Maharaj (18) took their seventh wicket stand to 31 runs.

India wasted their last DRS review early in the day as Jasprit Bumrah (0/60) looked for an early LBW call against Maharaj.

Mohammed Shami (1/58) bowled a lively spell and got the breakthrough with Maharaj caught behind in the 99th over.

India made a double howler in the 104th over. First, Kagiso Rabada (on 1) was dropped at slip off Ashwin by Kohli. On the very next ball, Rabada (on 3) was again dropped by Pandya at point as Shami obstructed him whilst running in from short third-man.

South Africa then crossed 300 in the 106th over, while du Plessis reached his 17th Test half-century off 127 balls. In doing so, he put on 42 runs with Rabada (11).

India finally got the delayed breakthrough in the 111th over as Pandya held a smart catch off Ishant in the deep. Two overs later, Ishant also bowled du Plessis to change the course of the morning session again.

Ashwin then wrapped up the South African innings as Morne Morkel (6) holed out to long off.

Hardik Pandya (11 not out) was giving Kohli company at the crease as India reached 183 for five in 61 overs in their first innings at stumps in reply to South Africa's 335 all out.

Former captain Sunil Gavaskar today questioned India's team selection for the second cricket Test against South Africa, saying opener Shikhar Dhawan's "head is always on the chopping board".

India made three changes to their playing XI, with KL Rahul replacing Shikhar Dhawan and Ishant Sharma coming in for Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose three-wicket burst in the first morning of the opening Test rocked the hosts.
Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha was ruled out due to a strain and Parthiv Patel was included is his place.

Gavaskar said: "I think Shikhar Dhawan is the 'Bali ka Bakra' (scapegoat). His head is always on the chopping board. He just needs one bad innings and he is out of the team.

"I also don't understand why Ishant came in for Bhuvneshwar when he had taken three wickets on the opening day at Cape Town. Ishant could have replaced Shami or Bumrah but leaving him out, I don't understand."

South Africa were 78 for no loss at lunch on the opening day of the second Test match against India at the Centurion at the SuperSport Park, Centurion on Saturday.

Openers Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar had put on a spirited show and are batting on 51 and 26 runs respectively.

The hosts, who lead the three-match series 1-0, elected to bat after winning the toss.

"We are going to bat first again. It is usually very slow on day one and it takes to spin later on. The previous toss was touch and go but all the stats are in favour of the team batting first out here. The cracks could open up over the next few days and it could get difficult. It is still a big fight, two quality teams trying hard to win a Test match and we expect the same from India. There are a few things in the first Test we think we can improve upon. Lungi Ngidi is making his debut on his homeground. He's an exciting youngster and has a lot of pace and bounce. And that is the only change," the Proteas skipper said.

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Virat Kohli seems all prepared to give a tough challenge to the Proteas, especially after their loss in the first Test.

"It is a no brainer. We would've wanted to bat first as well. The pitch looks very different from what it looked a couple of days ago, all the grass has been taken off. It is more of a situation that's tricky out here, hopefully the bowlers will step up. Saha has a hammy niggle and we do not want to take a chance with him. KL Rahul comes in for Dhawan and Ishant comes in for Bhuvi to get some extra bounce," Kohli stated.

2nd Test: South Africa win toss, elect to bat first against India

After a 72 runs loss to South Africa in the first Test match, the Indian team management included Parthiv Patel and KL Rahul into the playing XI for the second Test, starting Saturday.

The management dropped wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha and opener Shikhar Dhawan.

It is also learnt that the conditions in Centurion may not aid swing bowling and therefore Ishant Sharma is considered in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, despite his six-wicket match haul and a gritty 25 in the first Test.

However, India skipper Virat Kohli on Friday clarified his position on the team's balance and composition, stating that opinions outside the dressing room will not influence the playing XI.

While addressing a pre-conference, Kohli said, "It looks likely a really lively pitch. Exactly what we expected it to be and we actually wanted it to be that way so that both teams are into the contest provided they play some good cricket. We are pretty happy to see the wicket how it behaved in Cape Town that gave us many opportunities to stay in the game and make comebacks whenever we were put under pressure also. Yeah look, this pitch will again test us to play our best cricket and that is something that we are looking forward to."

Dhawan's susceptible technique in bouncy and seaming conditions has been under the scanner and Rahul, who had hit his maiden Test hundred in Australia, is considered to be better equipped technically.

Parthiv last played against England and scored 195 runs in three Test matches, when Saha was injured.

Rahul, on the other hand, has till now played 21 Tests, scoring 1428 runs at an average of 44.62 with four hundreds and 10 half-centuries.

Today's game will be the last chance as if they lose, the series will be over, making it a familiar story for Indian cricket yet again.

India vs South Africa 2nd Test: KL Rahul, Parthiv included, Ishant replaces Bhuvneshwar

India surged back into contention against South Africa after two run outs late on Saturday, including the key wicket of Hashim Amla, saw the hosts slip to 269 for six at the close on the opening day of the second test.

South Africa had seemed set for a big first innings total when they reached 246 for three but some brilliant fielding and poor decision making combined to rattle their middle order and leave the honours even after the first day.

Home captain Faf du Plessis is not out on 24 and will resume his innings on Sunday with Keshav Maharaj (10) on a slow wicket that is expected to quicken over the next few days.

Amla looked in total control of his innings and struck 14 fours in his 82 before being called through for a risky single by Du Plessis.

The bowler, Hardik Pandya, reacted quickly though and his speed to the ball, swivel and quick release to the bowlers’ end found Amla two feet short.

Quinton de Kock was then out for a first ball duck, caught at slip by India captain Virat Kohli off the bowling of hard-working spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (3-90), who sent down an impressive 31 overs on the opening day.

The hosts` misery was compounded when Vernon Philander was also out without scoring, charging down the wicket for a run as Du Plessis screamed at him from the non-striker`s end to stop. Both players ended up on the same side of the wicket.

The poor half-hour undid the excellent work of opener Aiden Markram earlier as he compiled an eye-catching 94 before being caught by wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel off Ashwin, denied a third test century in seven innings.

Dean Elgar (31) was Ashwin’s other victim, while impressive seamer Ishant Sharma (1-32) induced an edge from the dangerous AB de Villiers (20) onto his own wicket.

The wicket has also shown some variable bounce already and is expected to break up on days four and five.

South Africa have selected uncapped seamer Lungi Ngidi as a replacement for the injured Dale Steyn, the only change to their side from the 72-run first test victory in Cape Town.

India made three changes as opener Lokesh Rahul, Patel and Sharma replaced Shikhar Dhawan, Wriddhiman Saha and Bhuvneshwar Kumar respectively.

Allan Donald, VVS Laxman surprised over Bhuvneshwar Kumar's omission

Outplayed in the opening Test, India will have to resolve a few selection puzzles and respond better to the sharp bounce when they square off against a redoubtable South Africa in the do-or-die second Test, starting in Pretoria on Saturday.

India’s record of nine consecutive series victories will be on the line from tomorrow after the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series by registering a 72-run win in the first Test in Cape Town.

It is only the second match in India’s 12-Test long overseas schedule in 2018-19, and already they are faced with a must-not-lose situation in a bid to keep this series alive.

Surrendering a 2-0 lead to South Africa will not dent their No 1 ICC Test ranking, but that will be of little consolation when the post-mortem of the performance is done back home.

In order to get this Test off on the right foot, the Indian team management will be looking to get their selection on the money.

On Thursday, 48 hours before the first ball is bowled, Team India held an intense practice session at Supersport Park, which lasted just under four hours.

The usual suspects went about their job in a predictable manner. Cheteshwar Pujara practiced catching at first slip; Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma batted in tandem at the nets, while Ajinkya Rahane stood a mute spectator for a major part of this session.

He did face some throw-downs from assistant coach Sanjay Bangar towards the end, as did Shikhar Dhawan, but neither of them faced any real fast bowling.

KL Rahul, Murali Vijay and Pujara batted in adjacent nets, followed by Kohli and Rohit, and then Hardik Pandya and Wriddhiman Saha, pointing to another five-batsmen line-up.

It is in keeping with the team management’s belief that this was the optimal choice for the first Test, never mind a lack of practice or collapsing for 135 in the second innings.

KL Rahul or Shikhar Dhawan?

Rahul for Dhawan is the obvious change. Overall, the latter averages 43.72 overseas in 19 Tests, a touch more than his career average of 42.62 (29 matches).

Take into consideration his record in Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa in singularity, and this comes down considerably to 27.81 (11 Tests).

On South African soil alone, this plummets further to 18.00 in three Tests without a single half-century. His highest is 29 on the 2013-14 tour.

These figures are worrisome in themselves, let alone Dhawan’s poor shot selection in both innings of the first Test.

Rahul, in comparison, allows for more solidity at the top given that he is comparatively a more technical batsman.

Alternately, the Rohit-Rahane conundrum isn’t as simple.

The Indian skipper spelt out that this particular selection was based on form.

Despite Rohit’s twin failures - 11 and 10 - in Cape Town, it doesn’t make any sense for the think-tank to reverse this decision after just one match.

The other conundrum is regarding bowling attack. Hardik Pandya is a shoe-in after his previous showing, and it only leaves Kohli with four spots to play with.

This is where the pitch comes in. On Thursday, the track seemed a hard and bouncy one with only a little sprinkling of green grass, quite unlike the one at Newlands.

There is a school of thought that a track replicating the one in the first Test could have seen India dropping the spinner altogether.

Instead, the good bounce and lack of lateral movement might just play well for batsmen on both sides. It would surely bring in the spinner as the match progresses.

As such, it remains to be seen if Kohli changes his pace combination. On Thursday, Umesh Yadav batted and bowled in the nets with vigour.

Ishant Sharma, having recovered from illness, looked sharp as well. The duo has played 115 Tests, yet could again lose out to the one-match old Jasprit Bumrah if India retains their attack.

In comparison to the pensive Indian camp, South Africa seemed at ease as they went about practicing for the second Test.

The hosts’ only selection issue is in finding an apt replacement for the injured Dale Steyn. Youngster Lungi Ngidi is a contender to make his Test debut on home-soil, allowing the Proteas to replicate the four-man pace attack from the previous game.

Even so, all-rounder, Chris Morris is more likely to get the nod. South Africa are comfortable fielding a three-plus-one frontline attacking formula, yet Morris’ inclusion helps beef up both their batting and bowling.

India: Virat Kohli (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Parthiv Patel.

Centurion Test: Jittery India aim to stay afloat against daunting South Africa

If India were hoping for a reprieve from fast and bouncy South African wickets in the second Test match starting on Saturday, they will not find it in Pretoria, a ground where the home side have a formidable record.

South Africa romped to a 72-run victory in the first Test of the three-game series at Newlands in Cape Town on Monday, a match that effectively needed just three days to be completed with one lost to rain.

The Pretoria wicket is likely to be similar, with perhaps not the same sideways movement of Newlands, and will provide another Test of the Indian batsmen's bravery against a seam bowling barrage.

Vernon Philander looked at times unplayable in Cape Town, while the new leading bowler in Test cricket, Kagiso Rabada, brings plenty of pace, fire and skill. He took 13 wickets in a Test against England at the venue two years ago.

Morne Morkel will be the third seamer, with Chris Morris likely to play in place of the injured Dale Steyn. He will also strengthen the batting.

There have been murmurings that South Africa may even select a fifth seamer and leave spinner Keshav Maharaj on the sidelines, with Duanne Olivier, Andile Phehlukwayo and uncapped Lungi Ngidi in the squad to offer that option.

"In this series and for the rest of the summer, we will be looking to see how best we can fit four fast bowlers into whatever formula we come up with," South Africa coach Ottis Gibson told reporters this week.

"When you are playing at home, you must play to your strengths. If you want to beat the best team in the world, which India are, then maybe we have to do something slightly different to what we've done in the past.

"We have to get stuck in and be tough with the bat and the ball; get in their faces a bit and use our physicality in terms of our pace.”

SHOW INTENT

India know what is coming and their success will be determined by how they handle the threat.

They managed a match aggregate of 344 over their two innings in Cape Town and captain Virat Kohli has told his batsmen to take the attack to the home side.

"We need to have intent because of the kind of bowling attack they have,” Kohli said.

"You need to find the perfect balance to do well in South Africa, especially where there is more bounce. You cannot be casual at the same time you cannot have loose shots also."

South Africa have a dominant record in Pretoria, with 17 wins and three draws in their 22 Tests. Four of their last six victories have been by an innings, including against India in 2010, and the other two by more than 200 runs.

South Africa has the continent's largest railway network, but it has been plagued by mismanagement and under-investment that has seen train use dwindle despite it being the cheapest form of public transportation.

In a report, the government's Rail Safety Regulator (RSR) said that, in the 2016/17 financial year, 495 people lost their lives on the country's railways and 2,079 were injured. The death toll was up 5 percent from the previous year.

South Africa train collision injures 200 people

When the third day of Cape Town Test was called off on 7th January due to rain, my Cricket freak cousin called me and told: “I have a feeling that when game resumes on fourth day, Indian pacers can wrap up South African quickly”. His prediction was based on favourable conditions for pacers post drizzle and little tendency of imploding which South Africans carry. There seemed a merit in his views and we opined that in case Indians restrict South Africa within 200, India stands a chance.

One hour after the commencement of game on the fourth day of the Cape Town Test, it looked that things were actually going the way my cousin predicted. South African collapsed even quicker than expectations. From 52 for no loss, they were bundled out for 130. It was a huge effort by Indians.

India’s victory at Kolkata 2001 and Adelaide 2003 started playing in my mind when South African batting line-up was collapsing in second innings. When India started chasing 209, the match was heavily tilted toward India. The absence of Dale Steyn added to the woes of South Africa. When the score was 30 for no loss, it looked that this special team of Virat Kohli will continue the winning streak.

But then they collapsed.

Instead of Kolkata 2001 and Adelaide 2003, in the end, it turned out to be an imitation of Bridgetown 1997, when India chasing 120 collapsed at 81 in fourth innings.

Indians per se had their moments in the Test, which was completed in less than three days (omitting the washed out day) but in the end better team won.

This was a sort of reality check for number one Test side in ICC ranking and for a team who has been on a roll for quite some time now. It’s simple - You piled up runs in sub-continent but what if situation upped the ante; you collapse.

Indians need to fix problems very soon. Things started going wrong right from the beginning. Ravinder Jadeja ruled out for the Test, which was a blow considering the number of right-handed batsmen in the South African line-up. Remember his 6 wickets haul at Durban in 2013.

The real problem, however, was the selection of playing eleven out of the available lot. Leaving KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane on the bench and picking Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma is not at all convincing. Rahane’s recent failures notwithstanding, you cannot take a batsman lightly who has Test hundreds at Lords and Melbourne Cricket Ground under his belt. Shikhar and Rohit have nothing to boast about their overseas Test credentials, and if you are playing with five batsmen only then you need to pick the five with the best records. At the top of it, Dhawan’s abysmal slip catching has put a serious question mark on his Test credentials.

Vijay’s tentativeness at the top of the order was baffling and made things worse. He as such is a Test opener with solid temperament but looked tentative at Cape Town.

Indians let South African off the hook from the pressure situation. During the first session when South Africa was 12 for 3, India was on top but then a deluge of runs by South Africa turned the situation.

The bottom line is that Indians need to fix glitches in the selection of playing eleven and the difficulties of its batsman in front of pace bowling. The ODI/T-20 mindset will not work. As Gavaskar once explained, at Test level you need to respect bowlers for what they are and for sure once you are settled, you can dictate.

All is, however, not lost.

India has its takeaway from the match in form of all-round abilities of Hardik Pandya & Bhuvneshwar Kumar and spirited Test debut of Bumrah. Pandya’s blazing knock in the first knock and rock sold temperament of Bhuvi while batting in both innings is a clear silver lining. With Pandya, Ashwin, Saha and Bhuvi down the order, five batsmen strategy also looks fine.

Moreover, it is not always easy to play a Test outside the subcontinent without a warm-up match and sufficient match practise. But course correction needs to be quick as this is a Three Test series and comeback has to be immediate.

Virat Kohli and boys need not have their shoulders down though. Winning and losing is part of the game; what really matters is that how you compete and team India can draw consolation out the fact that that they ended up better than expectations from a situation when they were 7 down at 92 in first innings in reply of 286 but they missed the final punch.

With bowlers doing their job well, a lot would depend on how Kohli, Pujara and Vijay perform in the remaining two Test matches as these three have the proven credentials for such situation.

Now that the actress is back in the tinsel town, she returned to her next film with Shah Rukh Khan, "Zero" to resume shooting. What left her by surprise was the welcome she received at the set. The set was decorated with flowers, pink and purple and all shades beautiful with adorable images from her wedding and. There were also makeup and brushes involved in the setup that made a perfectly coordinated scene. She also got a note that reads: “Great to be back on set... Thank you for this floral welcome guys!! Lots of love.” The actress shared a picture of herself smiling after being received in this manner by her team. They say - Back to one! In this case ill say - Back to Zero ????!! The first innings for India was quite unfortunate when bowlers did their bit by holding the South African side for 286 but the India batting order was shattered by the Proteas pacers when Indian side somehow saved the follow-on.

The top batsmen and stars of Test cricket could not perform, only Hardik Pandya went on the thrilling counter-attack by scoring 93 crucial runs for his team but missing an elusive century. He also took 2 quick wickets of Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar before the wrap-up of the second day of the first Test against South Africa.

When all the batsmen were falling into the trap of South African bowlers then Hardik found a determined ally in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, together they made a partnership of 99 runs. He also denies the talk of pitch behaviour and additional swing by playing some handsome strokes.

As the 3rd-day play was called off due to the heavy rains. Now, Indian bowlers have less time to strike again because fewer overs now, around 200 overs are left in the game. Though, the rain proved to be a salvation for India side. If the Proteas had taken a huge lead on Day 3 then it would have become impossible for India side to save the game from there.

Hashim Amla and Kagiso Rabada will continue their game on day 4 as the weather reports say zero precipitation and a bright sunny day to have a game of cricket.

India vs South Africa: India under pressure on Day 4

Riding on Vernon Philander’s six-wicket haul, South Africa defeated India by 72 runs on Day 4 of the first test in Cape Town, on Monday.

With this win, the Proteas go 1-0 up in the three-Test series against India.

India's batting order once again fell victim to South Africa's pace attack in the second innings after skipper Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were dismissed in quick succession.

After 29 overs, India's score stood at 82/7 at tea, with 126 more runs required to win the first Test.

The first innings star Hardik Pandya was also dismissed by Rabada, after facing just five balls.

Earlier, openers Murli Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan and C Pujara were also sent back to the pavilion without causing any much damage, scoring 16, 13 and 4 runs respectively.

However, the bowling attack was at its ever best on a foreign soil after they reduced the South African team to mere 130 runs on Day 4 of the first Test match on Monday.

Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah struck early on Monday to take three wickets each while Bhuvneshwar Kumar claimed two as South Africa were bowled out in their second innings.

They lost 8 wickets and scored just 65 runs in this session, after resuming the day 2 play at 65/2.

The Proteas lost five wickets in quick succession with their score once reaching 95/6 after 34 overs.

India dismissed the opposite team quickly in a bid to salvage any chances of a result.

They now need 208 runs to win this match, after conceding a first inning lead of 79, in remaining one and a half day

The day three play was called off after heavy rainfall continued to lash Cape Town on Sunday.

After morning session was washed out, it was assumed that the teams could resume before the scheduled tea interval, as the rain stopped. But it was for less than half an hour.

India 135 all out, South Africa win 1st Test by 72 runs

In a major setback for South Africa, Dale Steyn will not bowl for his team in the remaining first Test match and is likely to miss the remaining series against India also, due to the heel injury he suffered.

However, he can bat for his team if required.

The right-arm pacer had injured his left heel on the second day of the first test match at Newlands, Cape Town.

Minutes before lunch, Steyn landed awkwardly in the footholds, and then stopped, fiddled with his shoe and tossed the ball to Vernon Philander, who later completed the over.

The 34-year-old part-walked, part-jogged off the field and was immediately taken for scans, which revealed the extent of the damage.

Later, team manager Mohammed Moosajee confirmed that Steyn would not bowl again in the match.

"As we all know that during Dale's 18th over, during his delivery stride, he unfortunately landed awkwardly in the footholes. This caused a significant strain to the foot, leading to tissue damage on the underside of the foot in the heel area," Moosajee said.

He further informed that Steyn would need an estimated recovery time of four to six weeks to be back in the game.

"He is unlikely to bowl in this Test match, because the recovery period for this could be anything from four to six weeks which means he could be out for the series. But what we will do is get one of the leading ankle surgeons to have a look at him tomorrow to give us an opinion."

Steyn has taken two wickets so far in the first Test. The Proteas have been dominating the proceedings so far with 142 runs lead.

The third day of the test match did not start due to heavy showers and is unlikely to resume today.

Heel injury restricts Dale Steyn from bowling in first Test, likely to miss series

The first Test match against South Africa saw many dramatic scenes.

India started the day well with Bhuvneshwar Kumar wrecking the top batting order but finished it at a disappointing position after South Africa overcame the early losses and managed to put a total of 286 on the scorecard.

The match, where India was once seen at the driver's seat, soon shifted to the Proteas side when AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis struck a partnership of 114 runs.

Even after their dismissal, VD Philander, Q de Kock and KA Maharaj made a good contribution with their bats.

Then the South African pacers struck.

The ferocious bowlers too trashed the Indian top batting order in reply by taking three quick wickets and made the Indian team crawl at 28 for three at end of the day.

Vernon Philander had Murali Vijay caught at gully and four balls later Dale Steyn, playing his first Test match in more than a year, caught Shikhar Dhawan.

The biggest and most crucial wicket of skipper Virat Kohli was taken by Morne Morkel. He edged to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock after making just five runs.

A lot was expected from the skipper but he failed to produce results in the 1st innings of the first Test match.

This is another soft dismissal which has hit Indian team hard. Kohli fell into the same trap of Morne Morkel.

Yesterday was the third time when Morkel had seen Kohli off. Around 63.6 per cent of dismissals of Virat against South Africa is caught behind as he fails to judge the swing of the ball.

Combination of pace and swing often stuns Kohli and the bowlers deceive him by bowling far away from the wickets.

This has caused him out many times in the hands of men standing at slip position.

Kohli's tendency is to play mostly in the 'V' area. But the problem comes when a ball is just short of a good length (outside off) on a sharp bouncy pitch, likewise, the pitch of Newlands.

India's tour of England in 2014, is an example when in 6 out of 10 test innings he was caught out exactly the same way.

With an average of 44.38, Kohli's performance is comparatively poor in away series than performances in home series.

The stats reflect that Kohli is much comfortable playing in India, but in the foreign lands, his performance is affected due to adverse conditions and pitch behaviour.

Despite having a wonderful overseas record in limited overs, Kohli fails to score centuries on the green pitches in Test cricket.

For Example India's tour of Australia in 2014-2015, Kohli scored 4 centuries in 3 different cricket grounds but not in Brisbane, because it was the only green wicket in that series similar to the Cape Town's pitch.

Not to forget Tendulkar's innings in 1992 on the tour of England when every Indian batsman was struggling to score, Sachin at such young age scored two brilliant century.

Talking about the current series, Indian side needs to revamp their strategy to tackle South African.

India vs South Africa: Will Virat's jinx of not performing on green pitches to continue?

It was a sad day for Virat Kohli when he was bowled out after scoring just five runs against South Africa on Friday.

India lost three wickets in the first 11 overs they played making only 28 runs on Day 1.

However, as soon as the Indian cricket team captain got out, Twitter made Anushka Sharma its target and blamed her for Virat's on-field performance.
