“It’s a wonderful feeling to have created some history. The guys really got stuck in, with the bat and the ball and in the field as well,” he added after the Port Elizabeth triumph.

Success in the series has lifted India above South Africa in the International Cricket Council’s one-day rankings and they retained their number one status in tests as well despite losing 2-1 to the South Africans last month.

“For now, 4-1 feels amazing. Obviously, the players put up some really good cricket to be in this position,” Kohli added.

The last match of the ODI series is in Pretoria on Friday.

“We want to win 5-1 but there might be a scenario to give a few (other) guys a chance,” Kohli said with the series won using only 12 of India’s 17-man squad.

Virat Kohli eyes World Cup glory after conquering South Africa

Heavily armed South African police raided the luxury home of the Gupta family on Wednesday as part of a probe into allegations the three brothers had corrupt links with President Jacob Zuma, who has been ordered by the ruling ANC to quit as head of state.

The raid marks a dramatic escalation in the pressure on Zuma and the political faction around him accused of milking state resources for their own ends. However, it remains unclear whether the 75-year-old will throw in the towel, or dig in deeper.

The early morning raid, which the police's elite Hawks unit said resulted in three arrests, took place amid reports Zuma was preparing to tell South Africa he was stepping down after nine years in office dogged by scandal and economic stagnation.

The SABC, South Africa's state broadcaster, said a Gupta family member was among those detained.

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba said Zuma would speak at 0800 GMT and satellite trucks were in position at Pretoria's Union Buildings, the seat of government. However, Zuma's office denied there had been any "official communication" of an impending address.

Adding to the confusion, a copy of an email, purportedly from deputy presidential communications director Shadi Baloyi, circulated on Twitter telling Pretoria police that plans for a "special media briefing" by Zuma at 0800 GMT at the Union Buildings had been cancelled.

"Kindly ignore my earlier request, as the briefing will not take place tomorrow," Baloyi wrote. Reuters was unable to confirm the email's authenticity and Baloyi did not answer her phone or respond to text messages.

Zuma's spokesman did not answer his phone.

'Crime scene'

The document was just one of the many dramas gripping Pretoria and Johannesburg, South Africa's political and commercial capitals, as the net closed in on Zuma and his allies.

Shortly after dawn, a dozen officers from the elite Hawks police unit sealed off a street leading to the Gupta mansion in Johannesburg's upscale Saxonwold suburb. One officer blocked access to Reuters, saying: "This is a crime scene."

Minutes later, an unmarked police van left the compound as residents applauded police officers and hurled abuse at security guards for the Guptas, who have been accused by South Africa's top anti-corruption watchdog of influence-peddling and swaying the appointment of cabinet ministers.

"Finally something is being done about it. These guys must get out of our country. They must leave us alone. They have done enough damage," said Tessa Turvey, head of the local residents' association, standing outside the compound's iron gates.

Police also raided the Guptas' Oakbay holding company in Johannesburg's Sandton financial district, according to a security guard outside the building.

On Tuesday, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) ordered Zuma to step down as president of the country, giving him no firm deadline but saying the party was sure he would comply and "respond" on Wednesday.

Zuma and the Guptas - a family of wealthy Indian-born businessmen - deny any wrongdoing.

A lawyer for the Gupta family said he could not comment on the raid because he had yet to see the search warrant.

Hawks spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi said the raid was part of a probe into influence-peddling allegations. The allegations are also the subject of a judicial inquiry on wider corruption involving the Guptas, dubbed "state capture" in local media.

"We're not playing around in terms of making sure that those who are responsible in the so-called state capture, they take responsibility for it," Mulaudzi said.

He declined to give details of what was seized or if the business premises of the Guptas, whose commercial empire stretches from mining to media, would also be raided.

'Disciplined member'

Signs of law enforcement mobilising against the Guptas - and by association Zuma - caused the rand to strengthen 0.5 percent against the dollar. The currency has tended to gain ground on any sign of Zuma's political departure approaching.

Zuma's silence has fuelled speculation of an increasingly desperate power struggle behind the scenes with deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, whose election to the head of ANC in December marked the beginning of the end of Zuma's tenure.

Besides his controversial relationship with the Guptas, who were born in India but moved to South Africa in the early 1990s, Zuma has 783 counts of corruption outstanding against him relating to a $2.5 billion state arms deal in the late 1990s.

Besides the pressure from the ANC, Zuma is facing a no-confidence motion in parliament brought by the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters. That motion is set for Feb. 22.

The ANC could throw its weight behind such a vote if Zuma, who has survived several no-confidence motions in the past, refused to heed its orders to resign. The entire Cabinet would have to step down if such a vote went through.

It`s been a collective effort to create history," Kohli said in the post-match conference.

You have to keep yourself in a good frame of mind, that`s what I`ve been doing," Sharma said after being crowned the man of the match.

The Virat Kohli-led side started the series on the front foot, winning the first three matches with comprehensive wins in Durban, Centurion and Cape Town.

However, India failed to maintain their triumphant run in the series as South Africa bounced back strongly to clinch a five-wicket win over the visiting side by the Duckworth-Lewis method in rain-hit and lightning-struck Pink fourth ODI in Johannesburg.

WION evening news brief, February 14, 2018

South Africa on Tuesday declared a "national disaster" over a drought that has ravaged parts of the country and threatened to leave the city of Cape Town without domestic tap water.

In a notice published in the government gazette, the department of cooperative governance said it had elevated the drought to a "national disaster" after reassessing its "magnitude and severity".

Cape Town is in the grip of a catastrophic three-year-long drought as sparse winter rains have failed to bring relief, and dam levels have dropped to dangerously low levels.

South Africa's second city is now facing the prospect of having to turn its taps off under a so-called "Day Zero" scenario to conserve the city's remaining water supplies.

On Tuesday, the predicted date for Day Zero was pushed back to June 11 after consumption cuts.

Rohit Sharma’s hard-fought knock of 115 took India to 274-7 from their 50 overs during the fifth ODI against South Africa here on Tuesday.

The South African bowlers, especially Lungi Ngidi (4/51), have brought the Proteas back into the game.

After winning the toss, South Africa put India to bat. Shikhar Dhawan (34 runs) was the first to depart, but Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli put up a 105-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

The Indian captain’s life at the field with the bat was short-lived as he departed for 36.

Ajinkya Rahane (8) was the next to follow Kohli after another confusion between the wickets. Despite losing wickets in quick succession, Rohit carried on showing his batting prowess and went on to score his 17th ODI ton, hitting 10 boundaries and 4 sixes in the run-up to his century.

South Africa will hope to chase down the total and stay alive in the series when they come out to bat.

The Men in Blue lead the six-match series by 3-1 and looking forward to winning the series

5th ODI: India beat South Africa by 73 runs, win series 4-1

South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) gave President Jacob Zuma 48 hours to resign as head of state on Monday after an eight-hour meeting of the party's top leadership, the SABC state broadcaster said.

Party leader Cyril Ramaphosa's motorcade left a marathon ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at 10:30 p.m. (2030 GMT) for Zuma's residence near the Union Buildings in Pretoria to deliver the message in person, the SABC said, citing sources.

His motorcade returned an hour later to the venue of the ANC meeting debating Zuma's fate.

The rand, which has tended to strengthen on signs Zuma could step down before his second term ends next year, extended its gains to 0.7 percent to the dollar on expectations Zuma was on his way out.

ANC officials and Zuma's spokesman could not be reached to comment.

Since Ramaphosa was elected party leader in December, Zuma has faced mounting calls from his party to end his scandal-plagued second term a year early.

The NEC meeting in a Pretoria hotel had all the ingredients for a showdown between Zuma stalwarts and those backing a swift transfer of power to Ramaphosa, the deputy state president.

Ramaphosa, 65, says he has held direct talks with Zuma over a transfer of power, and said on Sunday the meeting of the party's executive committee would be aiming on Monday to "finalise" the situation.

The party executive has the authority to order Zuma to step down as head of state, although there is domestic media speculation that he might yet refuse.

Zuma survived calls last year from within the NEC for him to quit.[L8N1IU0QO] But analysts say there is greater support for him to step down now.

His tenure as president officially runs until mid-2019 and he has not said publicly whether he will step down voluntarily.

The president is also facing a no-confidence motion in parliament set for Feb. 22, but has survived several similar attempts to oust him in the past.

His entire Cabinet would have to step down if the motion of no-confidence against him was successful.

Since becoming president in 2009, Zuma has been dogged by scandal. He is fighting the reinstatement of 783 counts of corruption over a 30 billion-rand (now $2.5 billion) government arms deal arranged in the late 1990s when he was deputy president.

Some within the ANC and the opposition say the Gupta family, friends of Zuma, have used their links with the president to win state contracts and influence Cabinet appointments. The Guptas and Zuma have denied any wrongdoing.

India's Bank of Baroda, which counts the Guptas as clients, has announced plans to exit South Africa, the central bank said on Monday.

After being knocked back in the 4th ODI, India will look to crush a South African revival before it becomes a threat to their pursuit of a maiden ODI series triumph.

The two sides will clash in the fifth one-dayer on Tuesday.

The Men in Blue lead the six-match series by 3-1 after winning the first in Durban by six wickets, the second in Centurion by nine wickets and the third in Cape Town by 124 runs.

South Africa bounced back by winning the rain-affected and lightning-struck Pink ODI in Johannesburg.

The hosts won by 5 wickets after the Duckworth–Lewis (DLS) method reduced the match to 28 overs with a target of target 202 from previous 289.

India's wrist-spinners versus South Africa's batting line-up is still the key contest going ahead in this ODI series.

However, the dual rain intervention affected India's momentum with both the bat and ball.

From Indian bowling side, there are still question marks over the fitness of Kedar Jadhav, who suffered a hamstring injury in Cape Town and missed the previous game.

A suspected poacher was mauled to death and eaten by a pack of lions close to the Kruger National Park in South Africa, police said Monday, adding that little was left of the victim's body.

The remains were found at the weekend in the bush at a private game park near Hoedspruit in the northern province of Limpopo, where animals have been poached in increasing numbers over recent years.

"It seems the victim was poaching in the game park when he was attacked and killed by lions. They ate his body, nearly all of it, and just left his head and some remains," Limpopo police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe told AFP.

A loaded hunting rifle was found near the body on Saturday morning. Police are trying to establish the victim's identity.

Police in Limpopo have roped in the Department of Home Affairs to assist in identifying the half-eaten body of a man who was killed by a pack of lions in Hoedspruit, outside Phalaborwa, at the weekend.

Police Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said: "We are still trying all other means, including the Home Affairs Department, to get his history, which may lead us to his residential place".

Lion body parts are used in traditional medicine.

Poachers also often target rhinoceroses in South Africa's game parks to feed a booming demand for rhino horn in China, Vietnam and other Asian countries, where it is believed to have medicinal qualities.

Indian bowlers continued their stellar show as Jasprit Bumrah restricted South Africa's lead to a bare minimum with his maiden five-wicket haul, keeping the visitors in the contest after an engaging second day's play in the third and final cricket Test.

In reply to India's 187, South Africa didn't fare any better being all-out for 194 in 65.5 overs with their lead being an insignificant seven runs. The Indian top-order showed more application as they were 49 for 1 at stumps with an overall lead of 42 runs.

Murali Vijay (13 batting, 49 balls) was in the company of KL Rahul (16 batting, 38 balls). The team management wanted to shield Rahul from the new ball bowlers by sending Parthiv Patel (16) to open the innings but the plan didn't work as he quickly removed by Vernon Philander.

Rahul-Vijay left the ball well and showed more patience than the first innings as they batted out 12 overs.

They added 32 runs for the second wicket, running judiciously between the wickets and hitting 3 boundaries together.

On a pitch that is offering extensive lateral movement, a target of 175 could prove to be a match-winning for India.

Playing only his third Test match, Bumrah polished the lower-middle order with figures of 5 for 54 in 18.5 overs ably complemented by Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3/44 in 19 overs).

While Bumrah's maximum victims were at the rear of the Proteas innings, Bhuvneshwar inflicted the early damage including a beautiful indipper that knocked back AB de Villiers' (5) middle-stump.

Hashim Amla (61, 121 balls) batted with grit and determination and was given good support by nightwatchman Kagiso Rabada (30) during the first session when they had added 64 runs for the third wicket.

This was after Bhuvneshwar had removed Dean Elgar with a beauty, a delivery that pitched on the leg-middle, induced him to go for a drive and got an edge.

However, Amla got good support from Rabada, who frustrated the Indian bowlers for a good 114 minutes during the first session of the day.

Amla also added 44 runs for the seventh wicket with Vernon Philander (35), who unleashed a flurry of strokes as the home team crossed the 150-run mark in the 56th over.

Amla then gifted his wicket away, flicking straight to Hardik Pandya at deep square leg off Bumrah in the 60th over much to Indian team's delight.

It was the least threatening delivery that the batsman had faced in his grinding 121-ball knock.

Philander though continued his attacking ways and in all, he hit five boundaries during his 55-ball stay. He was next to go, out caught pulling Mohammed Shami (1/46) as Bumrah completed a running catch in the deep.

Andile Phehlukwayo (9) and Morne Morkel (9*) pushed the score past India's 187-marker before Bumrah wrapped things up in the 66th over.

He trapped Phehlukwayo leg before off a full toss and two balls later Lungi Ngidi (0) was caught behind as Parthiv Patel completed a fine diving catch to his left.

Bumrah had previously struck twice in the middle session as South Africa reached 143 for 6 at tea.

Post lunch, India made a hectic start to the second session as Ishant Sharma (1/33) had a loud appeal for lbw against De Villiers (5) turned down on the very fourth ball. The visitors didn’t opt for DRS, which the replays showed to be a mistake with 'three reds'.

South Africa crossed 100 in the 40th over but lost another wicket quickly as Bumrah bowled Faf du Plessis (8), out shouldering arms to an off-cutter.

In between though, Amla got another two lbw reprieves to go with the one in morning session.

First, in the 35th over, he was (on 33) was deemed not out off Bhuvneshwar even as the ball seemed to be clipping the leg stump. The decision stayed in his favour on umpire's call.

In the 41st over then, Amla (then on 41) was adjudged lbw off Kumar once again. But the batsman referred DRS and the ball was missing off-stump, so he got another life.

He used this to hold the South African innings together and scored his 37th Test half-century off 98 balls.

Amla added 18 runs with Quinton de Kock (8) who had a couple flashy boundaries to his credit. He was soon caught behind off Bumrah as South Africa were reduced to 125/6.

India's fight-back though was cut short as Philander added 18 runs with Amla until tea.

This was after nightwatchman Kagiso Rabada (30 runs, 84 balls, 6 fours) played out 114 minutes of the morning session as South Africa had reached 81/3 at lunch.

India vs South Africa, 3rd Test: Jasprit Bumrah's maiden five-for helps visitors take edge on day 2

Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla frustrated India with an unbeaten 64-run stand, taking South Africa to 69 for one at lunch on a pitch that appears to have become less threatening in the third and final Test here.

The hosts need another 172 runs to win.

At the break, Amla was batting on 27 runs (61 balls, 4 fours) while Elgar was unbeaten on 29 runs (100 balls, 3 fours).

This was after play was delayed due to heavy morning rains in Johannesburg. The team arrived on schedule at the Wanderers but had to wait for better conditions for play to resume.

The umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould had two inspections at 10 am and 10.30 am (local time). After the second inspection, they were happy enough to allow play to resume 30 minutes later.
Finally the game began at 11 am local time, with all three sessions rescheduled, after an hour's delay. The morning session was 90 minutes long.

Starting from their overnight score of 17/1, South Africa made steady progress. Jasprit Bumrah (0-20) completed his over from last evening, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar (0-20) and Mohammed Shami (1-15) started off proceedings properly.

Elgar encountered a couple hairy moments once again, against Bumrah in particular, but settled down shortly enough. He shrugged off whatever happened last evening and looked more confident as the session went on.

At the other end, Amla looked ever solid. He left the ball well and looked to score whenever the opportunity presented itself.

India gave away too many quick runs early on in the session, not helped by uneven bounce as they conceded 9 extras in the first hour of play. But later they tightened up the scoring.

Bumrah and Shami were guilty of getting carried away and bowling a tad shorter, even if they didn?t concede too many runs. They didn?t hit the length enough, where the uneven bounce truly lies on this pitch, and didn?t really attack the batsmen enough.

Kumar and Ishant Sharma (0-10) managed to keep things quiet though, even as Amla and Elgar built their gritty partnership.

South Africa crossed 50 in the 22nd over, while their 50 -partnership came off 125 balls. They made good use of heavy roller in the morning, which might have sedated the pitch somewhat.
To their discredit, India didn?t even create a single half-chance for getting a breakthrough this morning.

On day one, India were bowled out for 187 runs in their first innings after opting to bat. Virat Kohli (54) and Cheteshwar Pujara (50) scored contrasting fifties while Kagiso Rabada finished with 3-39.

On day two, Jasprit Bumrah (5-54) picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket as South Africa were bowled out for 194 in their first innings. Hashim Amla scored 61.

On day three, brave knocks from Virat Kohli (41) and Ajinkya Rahane (48) carried India to 247 in their second innings before play was halted early on account of dangerous pitch.

South Africa have already won the three-match series with a 2-0 lead after winning the first Test in Cape Town by 72 runs and the second Test in Centurion by 135 runs.

India dismissed second innings of Proteas at 177 runs and clinched a 63-run win at Johannesburg.

At tea, South Africa were 136 for the loss of three wickets and eye a series whitewash while chasing 241 against India.

A 64-run partnership between Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla frustrated the opponents, before Ishant Sharma struck and ended Amla's stellar innings at 52.

He also sent Faf du Plessis back to the pavilion without letting him cause any serious damage.

Bumrah too took two crucial wickets of AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock, further helping India inch India closer to a single match.

Later, Shami took advantage of new players being on the crease and quickly dismissed Vernon Philander and Andile Phehlukwayo, bringing the Men in Blue to the driver's seat.

Starting from their overnight score of 17/1, South Africa made steady progress. Jasprit Bumrah (0-20) completed his over from last evening, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar (0-20) and Mohammed Shami (1-15) started off proceedings properly.

Day 4: India crush South Africa to win 3rd Test by 63 runs

India is ranked second only to South Africa as the cheapest country to live or retire, according to a recent survey of 112 countries.

The survey by GoBankingRates ranked nations on the bases of four key affordability metrics provided by online pricing database Numbeo. The metrics are: Local purchasing power index, rent index, Groceries index, and Consumer price index.

With the second lowest rent index among the 50 cheapest countries (after neighbour Nepal), living in India can be cheaper compared to most of the countries.

India also has some of the lowest prices for consumer goods and groceries, with typical monthly expenses for these priced around USD 285 for a single person living in Kolkata.

The survey says that India, home to 1.25 billion residents, is the most populous among the 50 cheapest countries. Its major industries include textiles, chemicals and food processing. India also has a relatively high local purchasing power in the major cities that were surveyed.

India's local purchasing power is 20.9 per cent lower, rent is 95.2 per cent cheaper, groceries are 74.4 per cent cheaper, local goods and services are 74.9 per cent cheaper, the survey said.

India is cheaper than its neighbouring countries like Colombia ranked at 13, Pakistan (14), Nepal (28), Bangladesh (40).

The local purchasing power index measures the relative purchasing power of a typical salary in that country, compared to New York City. A lower purchasing power buys fewer goods, while a higher purchasing power buys more.

While the rent index compares typical rental prices in the country to New York City, the groceries index holds a similar comparison for typical grocery prices.

The consumer price index compares costs of local goods and services - including restaurants, groceries, transportation and utilities ? to New York City.

According to the survey, even among the 50 cheapest countries, rent is at least 70 per cent cheaper than in New York City, groceries are at least 40 per cent cheaper, and consumer goods and services cost less by 30 per cent or more. Local purchasing power does vary greatly among these cheap countries, however.

South Africa has topped the survey as the cheapest country to live or retire. Being the world's largest producer of platinum, gold and chromium, goes far to enrich the country and its economy. This resulted in a local purchasing power that is significantly higher than what New Yorkers face, which is the most favourable factor that helps South Africa top the list.

Along with a higher local purchasing power, South Africa also offers lower prices on consumer goods and groceries, and rent costs that are typical of the 50 cheapest countries. In the major city of Cape Town, for instance, monthly expenses total just under USD 400 while the average rent costs are reflected by the typical price to rent a one-bedroom in Durban of around USD 280 a month.

Among the most expensive countries in the survey are Bermuda (ranked 112), Bahamas (111), Hong Kong (110), Switzerland (109) and Ghana (108).

India cheapest country to live in after South Africa: Survey

Virat Kohli once again stood for his team and kept India afloat against South Africa on Day 1, after the openers failed to contribute anything.

The Indian skipper smashed a gritty 54 runs off 106 balls to reach his 16th Test half-century.

However, the right-handed batsman was caught out by AB de Villiers of Lungi Ngidi, soon after his century.

Along with Pujara, whose individual contribution is very low if compared to the balls he has played, stood shoulder to shoulder with his captain.

The two played attentively to take India's total from 13 to 97 without losing any further wicket and building an 84-run partnership.

After losing three wickets, India's score stands at 104 for the loss of three wickets after 49 overs.

Opener M Vijay once again got off to a wrong start with Vernon Philander striking early.

Whereas, KL Rahul once again touched a ball that was pitched slightly outside off and gave an easy catch behind the wickets to Quinton de Kock.

India on Wednesday won the toss and opted to bat first at the Wanderers Stadium.

After losing two consecutive Test matches, India is playing very cautiously to avoid a series whitewash.

Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane, who did not play the first two Tests was recalled on the strength of a strong record in overseas Tests.

Dinesh Karthik was flown in as a replacement for injured wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha and could play at the expense of Parthiv Patel, who had a poor game with the gloves in the second Test at Centurion.

Opener Murali Vijay and skipper Virat Kohli showed lot of grit on a treacherous track as India reached 100 for 4 against South Africa at lunch on the third day, thereby extending their overall lead to 93.

Vijay was out at the stroke of lunch when Kagiso Rabada's yorker cleaned him up after he showed a lot of patience scoring 25 off 127 balls during his three hour and 14 minutes vigil at the crease.

Kohli as usual showed his class with some crisp on drives as he reached 27 off 49 balls at the break having added 43 runs for the fourth wicket after KL Rahul (16) and Cheteshwar Pujara (1) were dismissed early in the morning.

However, the talk of the morning was about the uneven bounce of the Wanderers track with some of the cracks on good length and short of it opening up.
With deliveries rearing up and keeping low from the same spot from the Corlett Drive End, it became difficult for the batsmen with on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould inspecting a few spots on the track.

First, Kohli was hit on the right hand in the 31st over.

Then, Vijay was hit on the left hand in the 35th over. Kagiso Rabada (1-31) was the bowler on both occasions.

At the second instance, the umpires and both captains had a long chat in the middle as well.

Michael Holding on air called it a pitch which he rated as "2 out of 100" and called for ICC sanction.

In fact the former West Indies paceman went ahead and felt that some of the batsmen could be seriously hurt as everyone does not have the technique and big heart like Kohli.

"I understand Virat Kohli wants to play but not everyone can handle what he can," said Holding.

In the morning Rahul (16) chased one off Vernon Philander (2-21) and was caught at the second slip.

Three overs later, India were reduced to 57/3 as Cheteshwar Pujara (1) was caught at second slip too, this time off Morne Morkel (1-13). The ball just reared up off length and took the bat's shoulder and Pujara could do nothing about it.

This brought Kohli and Vijay together, and the duo batted out 18.5 overs. Initially, they went through a tough passage with a lot of plays and misses.

Kohli (on 4) got a life, when Aiden Markram couldn't latch on to a tough half-chance at short leg off Morkel. The ball was hit straight to his hands but the reaction time was too short to make it a proper chance.

The Indian skipper then settled down and opened up to play a few more attacking shots. Vijay was down for the grind too and, for the first time in the series, held up one end for India in really tough conditions.

India crossed 100 in the 40th over. Five balls later, Rabada got the breakthrough the Proteas were looking for.

After fending length balls on a tough pitch, Vijay was bowled off a yorker that took an inside edge, ricocheted off his backfoot and onto the stumps.

India vs South Africa, 3rd Test: Vijay, Kohli extend India's lead on a treacherous track

Indian cricket team, who is on the tour of South Africa to play three test matches, six One Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals, have already lost the Test series by 2-0.

Despite two consecutive loss to Proteas, few Indian players skipped a day of the training session for a small jaunt to the jungle safari in South Africa.

Although their location is not certain, but as per media reports, they went to Mabula game reserve which is located just two-and-a-half hours' drive from Johannesburg. It is said to be one of South Africa’s finest private game reserves, which is owned by absconding Indian businessmen Vijay Mallya.

He owns 99.5 per cent stake in the 25,000-acre game reserve, for which he paid $6 million.

The third and the final Test match is scheduled to be held in Johannesburg and will start from January 24

The Indian cricketers even shared images on social media with Lion and Cheetah from their excursion. Ravindra Jadeja posted a picture on Instagram quoting, "Sher ! Sher Hota hai, Chahe Sasan gir mein ya Jobourg mein..Pinjare Mein Sher ko bahut log pathar marte hain, Asli Mard Saamne Khadde Hote Hain." × Opener batsman KL Rahul, who was roped in place of Shikhar Dhawan for the second Test, also posted a picture with Cheetah quoting, "Just a Lion and a Cheetah chilling." × Seamer Umesh Yadav posted a video of giraffes from Pilanesberg National Park & Game Reserve and quoted, "Wildlife safari#pilanesberg#great fun." × Indian pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, too posted a picture and quoted, "Never become sad when life pulls you back, because lion also takes one step back when he wants to go for a long jump. Despite Test loss, Indian players prefer to hang out with their wives than practice

A constructive 32 runs partnership between Skipper Virat Kohli and batsman Cheteshwar Pujara helped India sail through the loss of early two wickets.

Within half an hour of day one, India lost both its openers Murli Vijay and KL Rahul at 8 and 0 respectively, in the third and final Test match against South Africa.

It was after that Pujara and Kohli played defensive and continued to take the attack of South African seamers.

Pujara, who spent over 30 minutes on crease did not open his account. He had faced 51 balls but his contribution was zero.

Whereas Kohli, played along with the ball to help India keep the scorecard ticking.

3rd Test: Kohli-Pujara construct 32 runs partnership to take India 45/2 at lunch

After losing the Test series against South Africa, Indian skipper has come under the radar of many cricket spectators and critics. So many questions have been raised about Virat's decisions, team selection process and game strategies.

The Indian batting line in both the previous matches suffered some serious damage. Although, Indian skipper Virat Kohli scored a massive 153 runs in the first innings of the second Test.

In a recent interview, he hailed his bowlers, who have claimed 20 wickets in both Tests so far and said to rectify the errors in the final Test.

On one hand, Kohli looks confident and prepares for the final Test, on the other veteran cricketers have unconventional comments on his captaincy and decision making.

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag said in a sports-related show that other team members must point out Virat's mistakes on the field.

In every dressing room, players share their views and help the captain to avoid it but there is no one in the Indian squad who can challenge Kohli's selection decision.

Unsurprisingly, Kohli would want from his team to score runs and produce results but there is need to sit together and talk about the issues. Teamwork is important and every player has to contribute to tackling situations like these.

Sehwag thinks Virat must be getting advice from the coach but he is not implementing it on the field, he is expecting a lot from his team and this high expectation is affecting his captaincy, further his own game.

Recently, Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith raised serious questions on Indian skipper Virat Kohli's leadership capabilities, saying he lacks the patience required for a leader to raise the overall level of his team.

Smith, who was speaking at a sports-related event organised by South African media house wondered if Kohli was the right choice for the captaincy in the longer run for Indian cricket.

Before that former Indian team captain, Sunil Gavaskar also expressed his views on the performance of Indian cricket team. He said that MS Dhoni's advice in the dressing room would have been invaluable."I would have actually liked him to maybe give up captaincy and still stay in the team as wicketkeeper-batsman," Gavaskar said.

Kohli's teammates should point out his mistakes: Virender Sehwag

The play was called off because of a dangerous pitch at Wanderers Stadium on Friday after South African batsman Dean Elgar was hit on the grille of his helmet by a short ball.

Umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould had consulted earlier because of unusual bounce and deviation on a pitch which former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar described as "dangerous".

After Elgar was struck late in the afternoon by a sharply lifting delivery from India's Jasprit Bumrah, match referee Andy Pycroft joined the umpires on the field and the third day of the third and final Test was halted.

South Africa, set 241 to win, were 17 for one.

Only two Test matches have previously been abandoned because of dangerous conditions.

In January 1998, England were 17 for three against the West Indies at Sabina Park in Jamaica when the umpires stopped play because of a hazardous pitch.

And a match between the same two teams in Antigua in February 2009 was called off after 10 balls because a soft outfield was regarded as dangerous for bowlers and fielders.

India seize control

Indian captain Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane had set an attacking example as India took control of the match, scoring 247 in their second innings.

Umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould called off play after they were joined on the field by match referee Andy Pycroft.

The captains and match officials met after the stoppage and the only official word was that play had been called off for the day.

There had been suggestions during the day that play might be halted because of a dangerous pitch but with India having completed their innings any decision to abandon the match was always likely to be controversial.

It became clear that demons remained in the pitch when Mohammed Shami had Aiden Markram caught behind in the second over and Bhuvneshwar Kumar hit Elgar with a painful blow on the right hand in the next over.

The delivery which dismissed Markram lifted and seamed away, while the ball which struck Elgar lifted sharply off a good length.

The pitch was the subject of intense discussions by the umpires and a meeting in match referee Pycroft's office, attended by groundsman Bethuel Buthelezi and local officials, during the lunch break, when India were 100 for four.

There were areas on a good length on both ends of the pitch where the bounce was unpredictable.

Kohli and Rahane added 34 in quick time after lunch before a good spell by Kagiso Rabada, who bowled Kohli for 41 and then caught Hardik Pandya off his own bowling, reduced India to 148 for six.

But with the ball going softer, Rahane and Kumar, followed by Shami, attacked some wayward bowling. India's last four wickets added 99 runs -- crucial in a low-scoring match.

The innings was marked by good running between the wickets, while the lower order batsmen went for their shots, to the frustration of the South African bowlers.

Rahane, who was not selected for the first two Tests, made his runs off 68 balls and hit six fours in a courageous stand given the conditions.

After his partnership with Kohli set the tone for the afternoon, he and Kumar added 55 for the seventh wicket, with Kumar going on to score 33 to complete a series where he made useful contributions in each of his four innings.

With India already in a good position, Shami swung hard after Rahane had been dismissed, hitting two sixes in an innings of 27 off 28 balls.

Rabada, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel each took three wickets amid generally inconsistent bowling.

Dropped catches also weighed heavily. Elgar put down a straightforward catch at gully off Morne Morkel when Kumar had 15 and the total was on 178, then Rahane was dropped at deep point by Andile Phehlukwayo off Kagiso Rabada when he was on 38 and the total was 180.

South Africa were 136 for three in their second innings while chasing 241 against India at tea on the fourth day of the third and final cricket Test, here today.

Dean Elgar (61 not out) and Faf du Plessis (0) were at the crease at the break with South Africa still needing 105 runs for a win with seven wickets in hand.

Earlier, the partnership between Elgar and Hashim Amla frustrated India with an unbeaten 64-run stand, taking South Africa to 69 for one at lunch on a pitch that appears to have become less threatening in the third and final Test here.

Finally, the game began at 11 am local time, with all three sessions rescheduled, after an hour's delay.

South Africa's SABC state broadcaster reported on Monday that Jacob Zuma had agreed to resign as head of state, citing sources, but the embattled leader's spokesman quickly dismissed this as "fake news".

The rand, which had gained as much as 1 percent on expectations Zuma was on his way out, surrendered some of its gains after the rebuttal by the spokesman but remained 0.5 percent stronger on the day to the dollar.

Standing outside a meeting of the top leadership of the ruling ANC, SABC correspondent Tshepo Ikaneng cited "authoritative sources" saying 75-year-old Zuma had agreed to step down and formalities on how to tell the nation were being discussed. The broadcaster also tweeted the report on its Twitter handle @SAfmnews.

He provided no further details in his brief live broadcast - the first reports that Zuma might be throwing in the towel after repeated calls from his party to end his scandal-plagued second term a year early.

Zuma's spokesman, Bongani Ngqulunga, denied the reports in a text message, describing them as "fake news".

The meeting of the ANC's decision-making National Executive Committee (NEC) in a Pretoria hotel had set the stage for a decisive showdown between Zuma stalwarts and those backing a swift transfer of power to new party leader and current Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa, 65, says he has held direct talks with Zuma over a transfer of power and said on Sunday the meeting of the party's executive committee would be aiming on Monday to "finalise" the situation.

The party executive has the authority to order Zuma to step down as head of state, although there is some domestic media speculation that he might resist this.

Zuma survived calls last year from within the NEC for him to quit. But analysts say there is greater support for him to step down now.

Zuma's tenure as president officially runs until mid-2019 and he has not said in public whether he will step down voluntarily.

Zuma is also facing a no-confidence motion in parliament set for February 22 but has survived several similar attempts to oust him in the past.

The Guptas and Zuma himself have denied any wrongdoing.

India's Bank of Baroda, which counts the Guptas as clients, has announced plans to exit South Africa, the central bank said on Monday.

Ramaphosa has put the focus on rooting out corruption and revitalising economic growth since defeating Zuma's preferred successor, Zuma's ex-wife Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, in the ANC leadership race.

State broadcaster says South Africa's Zuma agrees to go, spokesman denies

The Bank of Baroda, which counts the Guptas as clients, has pulled the plug on its South African business, citing a strategic shake-up to slim down in international markets.

The Bank of Baroda's South African division was thrust into the spotlight two years ago when it agreed to take on the Guptas after corporate South Africa, including all four major banks, turned its back on the family's businesses due to reputational risks.

The Guptas, a trio of Indian-born brothers, have been accused by the South African public anti-graft watchdog of using their friendship with President Jacob Zuma to influence policy decisions.

Zuma and the Guptas deny any wrongdoing. The Guptas and their companies have not been charged with any crime and they say they are the victims of a politically motivated witch-hunt.

The Bank of Baroda said on Monday it would shut its doors in South Africa at the end of March as part of a plan to rationalise its branches in international markets.

"The branch will stop taking new / incremental deposits and disbursing loans with effect from 1st March 2018," it said in a statement.

The South African Reserve Bank said it was in talks with the bank to ensure its "orderly withdrawal from South Africa so that no depositor is disadvantaged".

The Bank of Baroda has about 3.9 billion rand ($325.99 million) worth of assets in South Africa, significantly smaller than 1.2 trillion rand and 979 billion rand at Standard Bank and FirstRand, respectively.

"The business in South Africa is not very significant and will not have any major impact on the financials of the bank," the parent company said in an emailed response to Reuters.

Separately, a source with knowledge of the decision said in addition to strategic shake-up, the Gupta scandal was among the reasons for the company's decision to quit South Africa.

The Bank of Baroda's decision will deal another blow for Gupta-owned Oakbay Investments, which has interests in mining, hotels, computers and engineering, one industry source said.

"It was inevitable for Bank of Baroda to pull the plug," the industry source said.

Oakbay Investments was not immediately available for comment on Monday.

Between December 2015 and April 2016, all four major South African banks - Standard Bank, Nedbank, Barclays Africa and FirstRand - terminated the accounts of companies controlled by the Guptas, citing reputational risk.

In September, Oakbay lost a court bid to stop Bank of Baroda from closing its accounts.

South Africa's ruling ANC party met on Monday to "finalise" the departure of scandal-tainted President Jacob Zuma, who has refused to resign, as opposition parties called for early elections.

ANC chief Cyril Ramaphosa, the president-in-waiting, has been locked in confidential talks with Zuma that have pitched the country into political uncertainty.

"We know you want this matter to be finalised," Ramaphosa said at a party rally in Cape Town on Sunday to rapturous cheering, vowing to tackle corruption that has tarnished Zuma's government.

Zuma has clung to power after rejecting a request by his party's senior officials to resign more than a week ago.

South African opposition parties on Monday called for early elections as the ANC grappled with its high-stakes leadership battle.

"We must proceed to the dissolution of parliament... subsequent to that, we move on to an early election," Democratic Alliance (DA) party leader Mmusi Maimane told reporters, speaking alongside several opposition parties.

The ANC's powerful 107-member national executive committee (NEC) met at a hotel outside Pretoria on Monday afternoon.

The committee could recall the president from office, though he would be under no constitutional obligation to obey the order.

If Zuma refuses, he could be ousted via a parliamentary vote of no-confidence within days.

"We know you want closure," Ramaphosa said on Sunday. "Because our people want this matter to be finalised, the NEC will be doing precisely that."

Down to a vote?

Political analyst Somadoda Fikeni said the committee was split.

Some members facing corrupt allegations while serving under Zuma are "not fighting for a principle or the ANC, it will be the basic instinct of self-preservation," he told eNCA television.

"They will strive for consensus, but if that fails, it will go to a vote," he warned. "The pressure is so much, it has to be the final decision for the ANC leadership. If they fail to do so, they will have surrendered the initiative."

Zuma's presidency has been marred by corruption scandals, slow economic growth and record unemployment that have fuelled public anger.

The stalemate over Zuma's departure has left Africa's most developed economy in limbo, with a series of public events cancelled last week including Thursday's State of the Nation address to parliament.

Sunday's rally was part of ANC celebrations marking 100 years since Nelson Mandela's birth -- as well as efforts by Ramaphosa to try to revive the party's tainted reputation ahead of next year's general election.

His speech marked the 28th anniversary of the address Mandela gave in the same location after being released from prison in 1990.

It is understood that a key sticking point in the negotiations is the potentially ruinous legal fees Zuma is facing from prolonged court battles against multiple criminal cases.

He is also reportedly seeking legal protection for his family and other associates who have been involved in controversial deals.

The ANC has insisted there will be no delay to the budget, which is due on February 21.

Zuma has not spoken publicly since being asked to resign by senior ANC officials on February 4.

In 2008, his supporters pushed out then-president Thabo Mbeki over allegations of abuse of power.

Under Zuma, the ANC won less than 54 per cent of the vote in local elections in 2016 -- its worst electoral performance since coming to power with Mandela at the helm in 1994.

South Africa to launch new notes to honour Nelson Mandela's centenary

India captain Virat Kohli has rued his team's misfortune but admitted that South Africa were the deserving winners as they showed a lot of character during their five-wicket win in the fourth ODI here.

With their tail up in the series following a 3-0 lead, India went into yesterday's game as favourites but twin weather breaks coupled with a few missed chances brought a halt to their rampaging ODI run as South Africa kept the series alive.

"In hindsight, you have to give credit to South Africa. I think they played with a lot of character, in the end, they pulled through, they deserved to win," Kohli said after last night's weather-hit and curtailed ODI.

"They are a quality side, we expected them to play quality cricket and they played well. We know we'll have to be at the top of our game to get another win under our belt and we'll work extremely hard for that," he added.

Opting to bat, Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli were going great guns before lightning first stopped play when the visitors were placed at 200 for 2. Although no overs were cut, India lost the momentum and only finished at 289 for 7.

Another rain break later, during South Africa's innings, forced the match to be reduced to 28 overs with the hosts set a revised target of 202.

Kohli also noted how conditions had worked against his team as India scored just 89 in 16.3 overs after the first break of play.

"After the break when Shikhar and Jinks (Ajinkya Rahane) came off the wicket played a bit differently, it wasn't as good to bat after the break," he said.

"After the lightning break the guys felt with the weather getting cooler, the wicket got faster in the evening, and that continued through the innings, so I don't think the guys quite settled in in the later half."

Kohli felt the curtailment of the match helped South Africa.

"The game getting shorter probably worked in their favour, they had to hit regardless of what the situation was. If it was a full game you never know," he said.

"It was more like a T20 game where you have to go after the bowlers and it can get difficult when people get into a groove and when a side has momentum it can be very difficult to stop them."

The India skipper also gave credit to South Africa for the way they went about their run chase.

"Especially Miller and their wicketkeeper batted very well when we got AB I thought we were in the game, but those two guys took the game away from us," he said.

"(After the second break in play) the ball was getting a little wet, but I won't say it was too wet. The wicket was good to bat on. Our spinners were getting a little bit of turn but South Africa took their chances and it came off.

"They improvised really well and it came off for them, they showed real character, they showed guts, they tried a few things and they deserved to win," Kohli added.

The Indians also had themselves to blame as David Miller was given two lives -- a dropped catch in the deep and then was bowled off a no-ball off Yuzvendra Chahal when he was on 6 and 7 respectively. He went on to make 39 off 28 balls.

"We did not grab our chances. You have to take your chances in this game, no balls are a fine line as well. We did not deserve to win, that's the way the game goes," Kohli said.

"No balls are always something that hurts you as a team but you can't be too hard on the boys. They try their best out there in the middle and mistakes do happen," he added.

South Africa`s ruling African National Congress (ANC) will convene a special meeting of its decision-making executive on Monday, its spokesman said, amid mounting pressure on President Jacob Zuma to step down.

The ANC called off a similar meeting scheduled for last Wednesday to discuss Zuma`s future after the president and party leader Cyril Ramaphosa agreed to hold talks for a transition of power.

The party has only said that those talks were "constructive".

Zuma, South Africa`s most controversial president since the end of white-minority rule in 1994, has been in a weakened position since he was replaced as ANC leader by Deputy President Ramaphosa in December.

Zuma, who no longer holds a top position in the party, has not said whether he will resign voluntarily before his second term as president ends in the middle of next year.

ANC spokesman Pule Mabe could not say whether Monday`s special meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) would discuss Zuma`s political future.

NEC is a key ANC decision-making body that has the power to instruct Zuma to resign.

"We do have a meeting tomorrow, we are unable to speak about the agenda at this stage," Mabe said on Sunday.

A senior ANC source told Reuters the meeting was scheduled to take place at 1200 GMT in Pretoria on Monday.
