South Africa slipped into recession in the final three months of 2019, the country's statistics bureau said on Tuesday, the third contraction to hit the economy since the end of apartheid in 1994.

The weak performance adds pressure on President Cyril Ramaphosa's administration which has been struggling to keep his election pledge to revive economic activity.

Instead, South Africa remains dogged by high and rising debt, low growth and soaring unemployment.

Gross domestic product fell by 1.4 percent in the fourth quarter, after dropping by 0.8 percent in the previous three months, Statistics South Africa said.

This took growth in Africa's most industrialised country for all of 2019 to just 0.2 percent, its lowest reading since the global financial crisis in 2009.

Weak agriculture output and transport were the main drags on growth, StatsSA said, followed by construction, mining and manufacturing, which outweighed positive contributions from finance and government spending.

Seven of the nation's 10 economic sectors contracted in the fourth quarter, StatsSA said.

"Finance, mining and personal services managed to keep their heads above water, but this was not enough to prevent the economy from sliding into its third recession since 1994," it remarked.

Australia opener David Warner is braced for a hostile reception but hopes fans will show "respect" as he and Steve Smith return to South Africa for the first time since the 'Sandpapergate' ball-tampering scandal that rocked world cricket.

They have since resurrected their careers and are all but forgiven at home, with Warner this week winning a vote by players, officials and media to claim Australian cricket's highest honour, the Allan Border Medal&nbsp;with Smith placed second.

But both players were constantly booed and jeered during last year's one-day World Cup and Ashes series in England, and they are expected to receive similar treatment in South Africa.

"For me personally, it won't be hard at all," Warner told Sydney radio station 2GB this week. "I just go there and I've got a job to do and that's to score runs and win games for Australia and put us in a good position."

Australia will be using the tour to fine-tune preparations for the T20 World Cup on home soil in October -- the only major cricketing trophy the men's team has yet to win.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade and all-rounder Mitch Marsh, who last played limited-overs internationals in 2017 and 2018 respectively, returned to the squads, led by Aaron Finch.

England were cruising towards victory after Jason Roy's explosive 70 from 38 balls and captain Eoin Morgan's 52 from 34 balls. It looked like England's game when they needed 7 runs off 7 balls with five wickets in hand and their in-form skipper on-strike. But English skipper's dismissal on the final ball for of the 19th over was a game-changing moment for England. Is that #1 even a surprise? 🙄 Anyway. congratulations, @DaleSteyn62 on becoming 🇿🇦's leading T20 wicket-taker 👏 Take a bow! #ProteaFire #SAvENG pic.twitter.com/IsJhT5OBjY — Cricket South Africa (@OfficialCSA) February 12, 2020 × “It was quite interesting towards the end there, but we knew if we stuck to our basics as a bowling unit we could end up winning,” South Africa captain Quinton de Kock said. Lungi Ngidi was adjudged the Player of the Match, after scalping 3 crucial wickets in the game and the thrilling final over. England has been dominating in this tour, they won the Test series against South Africa (3-1), and they drew the ODI series as one of the matches was abandoned due to rain.

A <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/significance-of-may-10-in-south-africa-when-democracy-trumped-racial-discrimination-217572">South African</a> court issued an arrest warrant for former president <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/former-south-african-president-jacob-zuma-faces-court-on-corruption-charges-255976">Jacob Zuma</a> on Tuesday after he skipped court on grounds of needing medical treatment, but the judge stayed the warrant until his corruption trial resumes on May 6.

Zuma's lawyer presented the judge with a sick note from what he said was a military hospital, but Judge Dhaya Pillay questioned whether the note was valid, as there was no medical number showing if and where the doctor was certified.

"I don't even know if he&nbsp;is a doctor. There is nothing to suggest that he is," she said, before issuing the warrant.

Dan Mantsha, Zuma's lawyer, said that he was abroad for medical treatment, without saying where. Local media have suggested he is in Cuba, although it was not immediately possible to verify this.

Zuma, president from 2009-2018, had previously applied for a permanent stay of prosecution but the court in Pietermaritzburg threw out his appeal in November.

He is accused of accepting 500,000 rand&nbsp;annually from Thales in 1999, in exchange for protecting the company from an investigation into the deal.

Thales, known as Thompson-CSF at the time, has said it had no knowledge of any transgressions by any of its employees in relation to the award of the contracts.

The National Prosecuting Authority initially filed the charges against Zuma a decade ago, but set them aside shortly before he successfully ran for president in 2009. Following appeals and lobbying by opposition parties, the NPA reinstated the charges in March 2018.

As it turns out, we all have a bit of Neanderthal in our DNA, CNN reported.

According to a new study, even Africans, who were perceived as having no links to our extinct human relative.

In 2010, evidence proved that our ancestors copulated with Neanderthals. This was done based on data from the bones of the Stone Age, dating back to 40,000 years.

The research found that modern Asians, Europeans, and Americans inherited about 2 per cent of Neanderthal genes. This did not include Africans.&nbsp;

As research becomes more detailed, more information continues to drop in. Researchers at Princeton University claim that Africans indeed have Neanderthal DNA.

"This is the first time we can detect the actual signal of Neanderthal ancestry in Africans," said Lu Chen, a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton's Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics (LSI) to CNN.&nbsp;

"Our results show this history was much more interesting and there were many waves of dispersal out of Africa, some of which led to admixture between modern humans and Neanderthals that we see in the genomes of all living individuals today", Akey told CNN.

According to them, modern humans left Africa about 200,000 years ago and bred with the Neanderthals.

Over time, this group then moved back to Africa, introducing the Neanderthal ancestry to Africa.

All modern humans possess Neanderthal DNA: Study

The environment of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions-blogs/how-social-media-saved-sudans-starving-lions-277278">South Africa</a> was transformed into a land of fire due to the huge massive amounts of lava flowed across the landscape approximately 183 million years ago during the early part of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/the-front-runner-actor-mamoudou-athie-joins-jurassic-world-3-cast-256602">Jurassic</a> Period.&nbsp;

The research was published on Wednesday in&nbsp;the science and medicine&nbsp;journal called ''PLOS&nbsp;One''.

Scientists described fossil footprints which revealed&nbsp;that dauntless&nbsp;dinosaurs and other animals managed to inhabit the semiarid region of South Africa called Karoo during the time period&nbsp;between the volcanic eruptions.

They&nbsp;were termed as ''karoo firewalkers'' by Emese Bordy, a&nbsp;geologist from&nbsp;the University of Cape Town.

They were some of the last animals known to have lived in this inhospitable region before it ultimately was engulfed by molten rock.

The researchers found a sandstone layer on a farm in the centre of South Africa with five fossils trackways that were left by at least three different animals that walked across the moist sandy banks of a stream.

One was a relatively small two-legged meat-eating dinosaur, another was a similarly small four-legged apparently plant-eating dinosaur and the third may have been a primitive mammal.

"The properties of the sandstone allow us to tell that the tracks were deposited in seasonal streams that run during flash flood events," he added.

"This story helps us change the way we see life in stressful and hostile environments, and thus improves our understanding of the history of life on Earth," he reported.

&nbsp;During this time, there were major extinctions of species, especially in the oceans, caused mostly by gases emitted from immense lava flows that poured onto the land surface in South Africa. Even as it incinerated the landscape, the lava flows changed the chemistry of the atmosphere and seas.

Fossil footprints, in the absence of skeletal fossils, sometimes offer the only evidence that animals were present in an ancient environment. The sandstone containing the tracks was sandwiched in between layers of volcanic rock, revealing a picture of a functioning ecosystem that survived despite threats of devastation from further eruptions.

"The&nbsp;lowest&nbsp;recorded fatalities in&nbsp;2019&nbsp;at 51 shows that there's a possibility of a fatality-free mining industry and that's what we are striving for," the ministry cited Minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/south-africas-troubled-anc-meets-to-elect-new-leader-26911">Gwede Mantashe</a> as saying in comments posted on Twitter.

A poor safety&nbsp;record&nbsp;has contributed to slower investment at some&nbsp;South&nbsp;African&nbsp;mines in recent years, along with depressed commodities prices and rising labour and power costs.

Nineteen people died in gold&nbsp;mines last year, 19 in platinum&nbsp;mines, seven in coal&nbsp;mines and six in other types of&nbsp;mine, the ministry said.

South African woman makes landmark Mount Everest summit

A South African man is on the verge of breaking his own Guinness World record as he has been sitting in a barrel at the top of a poll for more than two months.&nbsp;

Vernon Kruger, 52-year-old, set the previous world record in 1997. He will spend 67 days in the barrel by Monday and plans to carry on despite his team's disapproval. &nbsp;

Krugel said that sleeping in the barrel, which is placed in the South African town of Dullstroom, is not very easy.&nbsp;

"It's a very small place to curl up in and I have to lie in a foetal position," said Krugel who also works as a driver.&nbsp;

The 52-year-old washes twice a week in a small basin and his arrangement in the barrel also includes a drainage system.&nbsp;

Kruger is surviving on food hoisted up by his team in a wicker basket.

He said that the idea first came to his mind whilst climbing a palm tree during a vacation on an island.

"Somebody said... why don't you break the record for sitting in a tree? First it was a joke and then I got it dare from my friends to actually do it," Kruger added.

However, Kruger found out that an Indonesian man already has a record of sitting in a tree for 28 days.&nbsp;

Kruger then dumped this idea and started to work on "pole sitting" as suggested by his friend.&nbsp;

He sat for 64 days "on pole" to break an earlier record of 54 days.&nbsp;

Overcoming cramps and back pains, Kruger reattempted this task more than two decades later.&nbsp;

"It does get a bit frustrating up here especially because I can't do many things for myself," he added. "I need to rely on other people for absolutely everything."

"Vernon is not coming down when he breaks his record," said Fiona Jones, the organiser of the act. "He's going to stay a little longer."&nbsp;

Pole is 'sweet home' for South African man seeking to break own world record

Opener <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-drop-bairstow-from-test-squad-for-new-zealand-series-251553">Dominic Sibley</a> struck a career-best unbeaten 85 as England seized control of the second Test against South Africa at the close of the third day at Newlands on Sunday, grinding down their hosts ahead of a fourth-innings victory charge.

The tourists reached 218 for four at stumps, a lead of 264 that already looks substantial with two full days remaining, and potentially provides an excellent chance to level the four-match series.

Sibley put on 116 for the third wicket with captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-captain-joe-roots-year-of-frustration-as-england-falter-in-test-arena-270931">Joe Root</a> (61), before the latter steered Dwaine Pretorius to Faf du Plessis at slip late on.

Nightwatchman Dominic Bess gloved a leg-side delivery from Anrich Nortje (2-36) to end the day.

Sibley will seek to take the game further away from South Africa with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-stokes-and-broad-bicker-as-england-end-first-test-with-a-loss-270971">Ben Stokes</a> on day four with England's travelling fans in full voice in Cape Town.

"We’ve done really well – the performance with the ball yesterday and today we have shown some real grit with the bat," England seamer James Anderson told reporters.

"It is hard to say what is a good target to set. If the wicket is as flat as it was today, we would want 350 plus as a minimum.

"But if it starts to deteriorate, then we feel in the game right now. Whatever we post we will have to bowl well."

Sibley’s previous best in Tests was 29 and he showed impressive patience and concentration to see off the new ball and then accumulate his runs by waiting for the right opportunities to score.

He took 140 balls to reach his 50 and batted for almost the full day, which allowed Root to score more freely at the other end.

South Africa’s other two wickets in England’s second innings were that of Zak Crawley (25), who edged Kagiso Rabada to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, and Joe Denly (31), caught at long leg attempting a hook off Nortje.

It was, at times, a war of attrition that the visiting side won with risk-free, smart&nbsp;cricket.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/james-anderson-becomes-fifth-bowler-in-this-decade-to-take-wicket-on-first-ball-of-test-270372">Anderson</a> took five wickets and Stokes an England record five catches as they made short work of wrapping up the South African first innings, bowling the hosts out for 223.

Anderson (5-40) knocked over Rabada (0) with the first ball of the day and completed his England record 28th Test five-wicket haul when Nortje (4) edged to Stokes at slip for the all-rounder to take his fifth catch of the innings.

It is the joint-most by any player in Test&nbsp;cricket&nbsp;and the 12th time a fielder had taken five catches in an innings, but a first for England.

South Africa won the first Test in Pretoria by 107 runs.

Cricket: Sibley, Root put England in command of second Test

In an age of sports science, expert physical conditioning and meticulous planning, watching Test cricketers clumsily kick a soccer ball around as they&nbsp;warm&nbsp;up&nbsp;defies&nbsp;belief.

Not only because they look as if they are going hurt themselves, but because that is often what happens as their child-like enthusiasm for a kick-about clash with the tenets of professional sport.

The latest casualty is <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/rory-burnss-maiden-test-century-frustrates-australia-240333">Rory Burns</a>, England's opening batsman who top-scored in the first Test against South Africa but who will now return home with a serious ankle injury, missing out on the rest of the four-match series.

He hurt ligaments on Thursday trying to kick the ball away as his captain Joe Root bore down on him.

It came only 24 hours after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/new-zealand-draw-second-test-with-england-win-series-265850">Ollie Pope</a> had taken angry exception to a crunching tackle from teammate Matt Parkinson that in a real game of football might have earned the leg spinner a red card.

"If you look at what football does, the benefits from a psychological and fun point of view are outstripped by the dangers from it, but we will discuss that. I am not coming in with an iron rod right now," said Ashley Giles -- a year ago when he was appointed the new England director of cricket.

But <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-archer-may-miss-test-against-south-africa-271563">England</a> have now added yet&nbsp;another&nbsp;name to a growing list of soccer casualties.

Just over a year ago, Jonny Bairstow lost his place as wicketkeeper on a tour of Sri Lanka after damaging ankle ligaments in a kick-about.

A decade ago, then England coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/kirsten-ideal-candidate-to-coach-england-atherton-255139">Andy Flower</a> banned the&nbsp;warm-up&nbsp;soccer&nbsp;routine&nbsp;after Joe Denly damaged a knee because of an unwieldy tackle before a one-day international match against Australia at The Oval.

Like Bairstow, Denly is on tour in South Africa and might have offered some caution, as might have James Anderson, who turned his ankle playing soccer on tour in New Zealand in 2008.

Opponents South African can relate. Ace bowler Vernon Philander was out for eight months after he damaged his ankle in a pre-match kick-about in India.

But South Africa also still continue to play an awkward version of a rondo, where a few players in the middle of a circle of others try to intercept a soccer ball being passed between the players on the outer ring.

Australia's culture is reflected in their choice of touch rugby rather than soccer to get the blood flowing.

But this proved even costlier. In was during such a game that Glenn McGrath stood on a stray cricket ball left on the outfield at Edgbaston and ripped the ligaments in his right ankle, changing the course of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/from-batting-woes-to-pace-aces-major-takeaways-from-ashes-2019-249986">Ashes</a> in 2005.

England paceman <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-archer-in-no-ball-controversy-270703">Jofra Archer</a> may miss out on the second Test against South Africa after skipping bowling practice at Newlands on Wednesday.

Archer, who took six wickets in the first Test defeat at Pretoria including 5-102 in the second innings, did bat in the nets and took part in fielding drills but a sore right elbow kept him from bowling.

A decision on the 24-year-old would have to be made just before the start of the Test on Friday.

He had been a doubt for the first match after suffering from the virus that swept through the England camp on their arrival in South Africa but recovered in time to play in the 107-run defeat.

For the first time on tour, England's entire 19-man squad were at practice on Wednesday including spinner Jack Leech, who has suffered the longest from the flu bug.

Leech could come into contention as a spin option for England in the Newlands Test.

"Fingers crossed we’ve beaten the illness. It was nice to have everyone here and training together today," said wicketkeeper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/south-africa-beat-england-by-107-runs-in-first-test-270868">Jos Buttler</a> on Wednesday.

Drastic&nbsp;structural&nbsp;changes&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/south-africa-beat-england-by-107-runs-in-first-test-270868">South&nbsp;African cricket</a> over the last month contributed significantly to the Test side turning around their fortunes and starting the four-match series against England with a win, says captain Faf du Plessis.

The hosts ended a run of five straight Test defeats with a 107-run win over England at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-de-kock-leads-south-africa-fightback-against-england-270522">Centurion Park</a> on Sunday and the skipper hailed the new coaching structures and fresh personnel in Cricket&nbsp;South&nbsp;Africa's&nbsp;(CSA) administration.

“Now we can trust the system a little bit more and just focus on playing cricket,” said <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-england-fancied-for-test-series-as-host-look-for-fresh-energy-269648">Du Plessis</a>. “There is a lot more confidence in the structures, going from the top down.

“Obviously there were plans in place before, but right now I feel there are better plans in place," he said.

“We have got the right people in the right jobs, we’ve got the right people at the top of Cricket&nbsp;South&nbsp;Africa, which is really important.”

CSA suspended chief executive Thabang Moroe on December&nbsp;6 following allegations of misconduct and just hours after their major sponsor said it would not renew its contract in protest at poor governance in the organisation.

Former captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/graeme-smith-set-to-become-director-of-cricket-south-africa-266870">Graeme Smith</a> was appointed acting director of cricket five days later and he quickly chose ex-team mates Mark Boucher as coach and Jacques Kallis as batting consultant.

Enoch Nkwe, who as acting coach took the team on a three-Test tour to India in November where they were soundly thrashed, stayed on as assistant coach.

“Leadership always comes from the top and filters down and so I feel like, by starting that, it sets the tone for the way that we are playing now," Du Plessis added.

"You have to put those things in place for the things underneath to&nbsp;work&nbsp;in your&nbsp;favour."

South&nbsp;Africa’s test side have struggled since iconic players like <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-stunned-new-zealand-fight-to-save-second-australia-test-270820">Smith</a>, Boucher, Kallis, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/with-proficient-run-scoring-virat-kohli-proves-why-he-is-the-king-of-the-decade-270044">Hashim Amla</a> and Dale Steyn retired but also have had to deal with the tricky issue of balancing team selection with the need for racial transformation.

Off the field CSA clashed with the powerful Indian cricket board (BCCI), who had a testy relationship with previous CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat, and lost millions when India reduced the number of money-spinning matches they played in&nbsp;South&nbsp;Africa.

More recently, the botched launch of a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australian-cummins-becomes-ipls-most-expensive-overseas-buy-269295">Twenty20 league</a> also hit CSA’s coffers hard and they are still at loggerheads with the players’ association, who are demanding that the entire CSA executive resign.

The hosts ended a run of five straight Test defeats with a 107-run win over England at Centurion Park on Sunday and the skipper hailed the new coaching structures and fresh personnel in Cricket South Africa's (CSA) administration. “Now we can trust the system a little bit more and just focus on playing cricket,” said Du Plessis. “There is a lot more confidence in the structures, going from the top down. “Obviously there were plans in place before, but right now I feel there are better plans in place," he said. “We have got the right people in the right jobs, we’ve got the right people at the top of Cricket South Africa, which is really important.” CSA suspended chief executive Thabang Moroe on December 6 following allegations of misconduct and just hours after their major sponsor said it would not renew its contract in protest at poor governance in the organisation. Former captain Graeme Smith was appointed acting director of cricket five days later and he quickly chose ex-team mates Mark Boucher as coach and Jacques Kallis as batting consultant. "You have to put those things in place for the things underneath to work in your favour." South Africa’s test side have struggled since iconic players like Smith, Boucher, Kallis, Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn retired but also have had to deal with the tricky issue of balancing team selection with the need for racial transformation. Off the field CSA clashed with the powerful Indian cricket board (BCCI), who had a testy relationship with previous CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat, and lost millions when India reduced the number of money-spinning matches they played in South Africa. More recently, the botched launch of a Twenty20 league also hit CSA’s coffers hard and they are still at loggerheads with the players’ association, who are demanding that the entire CSA executive resign.

We have got the right people in the right jobs: Faf du Plessis

Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad were involved in a spat during the Centurian&nbsp;Test as the England vice-captain exchanged heated words with his teammate.

Interestingly, the two clashed as the team went into a huddle after the fall of a wicket.

The exact words exchanged between England vice-captain Stokes&nbsp;and fast bowler Broad remain&nbsp;unclear.

However, former England captain Nasser Hussain who was in the commentary box believed&nbsp;that Stuart&nbsp;might have said something which did not go well with his vice-captain.

Along with Hussian was former West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding&nbsp;who was also surprised and hoped for the quarrel to "end soon".

The West Indies legend added that before the tussle, the two players were joined by the captain&nbsp;Joe Root&nbsp;in a conversation on the field while South African player Dwaine Pretorius was walking towards the pitch.&nbsp;

Hussain added that he was "pleased"&nbsp;that the two players who had problems exchanged words to "clear their minds".

It ended badly for England, however, as the visitors&nbsp;ended the first Test match with a loss, being unable to reach the target of 376 runs. Hosts South Africa beat England easily by 107 runs.&nbsp;

Stokes, Broad bicker as England lose first Test against South Africa

South&nbsp;Africa&nbsp;broke down stubborn England resistance to win the first Test of their World Test Championship series by 107 runs at SuperSport Park on Sunday.

England needed 376 to win but despite some committed batting were bowled out for 268 on the fourth day of the five-day encounter.

An enthralling contest swung&nbsp;South&nbsp;Africa's way when left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj bowled Ben Stokes to halt a brief flurry of strokes as Stokes and captain Joe Root tried to lift the scoring rate before the second new ball was due.

The new ball then had an immediate impact with Kagiso Rabada having Jonny Bairstow caught at gully before Anrich Nortje claimed the crucial wicket of Root, who made a fighting 48 before he was caught behind.&nbsp;

It was the second time in the day Nortje claimed a wicket with the second ball of a new spell after he made the first breakthrough of the day by dismissing top-scorer Rory Burns for 84.

The remaining wickets fell quickly, with Rabada finishing with four for 103 and fellow fast bowler Anrich Nortje claiming three for 56.

Maharaj, who broke England's first wicket stand of 92 on Saturday when he dismissed Dom Sibley, took two for 37.

South&nbsp;Africa&nbsp;produced a disciplined bowling performance, making scoring difficult on a pitch which always offered something to the bowlers with some sideways movement and uneven bounce.

England added only 50 runs in 25 overs while losing two wickets during the morning.

Rory Burns took his overnight score of 77 to 84 before mistiming a pull against Nortje to be caught at mid-on, while Joe Denly was leg before wicket to Dwaine Pretorius for 31.

Burns and Denly saw off the threat of Vernon Philander and Rabada but found scoring difficult.

Philander conceded only one run in five overs. Rabada gave up 23 in six overs, which included two hooked sixes by Denly.

Burns, who faced most of Philander’s bowling, adding only seven runs off 37 balls. The change to Nortje brought an immediate result for&nbsp;South&nbsp;Africa&nbsp;as Burns attempted to pull the fast bowler’s second delivery and sent the ball looping to Rabada at mid-on.

Nortje made a second crucial breakthrough when&nbsp;South&nbsp;African captain Faf du Plessis made an inspired bowling change.&nbsp;

First innings destroyer Vernon Philander sent down three overs with the second new ball but was not making the batsmen play many deliveries, so Du Plessis called on Nortje with immediate success.

England's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/englands-jofra-archer-says-he-has-moved-on-from-racial-abuse-264849">Jofra Archer</a> was no-balled and warned for a high no-ball but appeared to escape sanction for a second high delivery in a controversial end to the second day of the first Test on Friday.

South African captain Faf du Plessis and coach Mark Boucher were understood to have approached match referee Andy Pycroft after the close of play but there was no immediate statement on what transpired.

"The match referee has deferred the situation for comment to the International Cricket Council communications department. We have been asked to leave it to them," said a South African team spokesperson.

"There was a little bit of conversation going on after the game," said South African opening bowler Vernon Philander.

"The umpires have to deal with it. Hopefully they will make the right call."

Although Philander said it was a matter for the umpires he offered his own opinion.

"For me it's plain and simple. You are setting an example for the rest of the people looking into this game. You have to make the right call. Are you going to tolerate it at another game or are we going to put a stop to it right here?"

Square leg umpire Chris Gaffaney signalled no-ball when an attempted slower ball by the England fast bowler went past nightwatchman Anrich Nortje in the penultimate over of a dramatic day during which 15 wickets fell.

The next delivery also was high and full, which had Nortje falling to the turf to avoid being hit, as Archer again tried to bowl his slower "knuckle" ball.

Umpire Gaffaney appeared to start signalling another no-ball, which could have resulted in Archer not being allowed to bowl again according to International Cricket Council regulations. But he seemed to check his signal. The umpires spoke to Archer and the over was called.

England batsman Joe Denly, who was fielding at leg slip, said he was surprised that Archer had attempted two successive slower balls but said he felt the second one had "just missed the stumps".

Controversy erupts over Jofra Archer's no-ball

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/hard-work-paid-off-says-quinton-de-kock-after-defeating-india-251443">Quinton de Kock</a> fell five runs short of his century after dragging South Africa out of early trouble to 277 for nine at the close on the opening day of the first test against England at Centurion Park on Thursday.

England took a wicket with the opening delivery of the four-test series and had their hosts teetering on 111-5 after lunch but De Kock’s belligerent innings brought South Africa back into the match.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/james-anderson-becomes-fifth-bowler-in-this-decade-to-take-wicket-on-first-ball-of-test-270372">James Anderson</a> marked his 150th cap and return to the England attack with the first-ball wicket of opener Dean Elgar, setting the tourists up for early domination of an inexperienced home side seeking to halt a run of five successive test defeats.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-punjabs-sam-curran-does-bhangra-with-owner-preity-zinta-after-defeating-delhi-207481">Sam Curran</a>’s skilful bowling earned him figures of 4-57 and Stuart Broad returned from illness to claim 3-52.

But De Kock wrestled the initiative away from England with an innings that combined early aggression, as he sought to impose himself on the bowlers, with later circumspection.

"We tried to make sure we kept up our intent, to keep ticking over and not get bottled up," De Kock told reporters.

"When England are on top, it's very tough to score runs against them."

He reached his 50 off 45 balls with some ferocious hitting before digging in to try to tire out the England bowlers on a hot day.

De Kock fell agonisingly short of a sixth test century as he feathered an away swinger from Curran through to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler for 95 off 128 balls.

De Kock featured in an 87-run sixth-wicket stand with 30-year-old debutant Dwaine Pretorius, who made 33, and 47 runs for the seventh wicket with Vernon Philander who was 28 not out at the close.

Curran led the way for the England bowlers, who had to do without Ben Stokes, forced off the field by dehydration although he did return to the field for the last hour.

The 37-year-old Anderson’s first ball in Test cricket for five months, having limped out of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/from-batting-woes-to-pace-aces-major-takeaways-from-ashes-2019-249986">Ashes</a> series with a calf injury, was a warm-up delivery down the leg side that Elgar tried to flick at and edged to Buttler.

New regime&nbsp;

It was not the start South Africa, under a new coaching regime after an administrative crisis, were looking for against an England side who have battled with a flu bug in their camp since arriving almost two weeks ago.

But Zubayr Hamza, in his third test, boosted his chances of securing the regular No. 3 place with 39 before being caught in the slips by Stokes off Broad.

"We would have liked to have got them out but if we can keep them to under 300, we are confident we can go on and bat big," Curran said.

Cricket: De Kock leads South Africa fightback against England

Former Test captain Graeme Smith is set to become Cricket South Africa's (CSA) director of cricket, the governing body's president Chris Nenzani announced on Saturday.

Nenzani added at a press conference he had spoken to 38-year-old Smith earlier in the day.

"I am happy to announce that we have engaged Graeme Smith and I am confirming that by next week Wednesday all of the negotiations around the contract terms that need to take place would have been concluded," said Nenzani, speaking after a special board meeting of CSA, following a week of crisis for the organisation.

If Smith agrees to take the job he will have just over two weeks to put a selection panel and coaching staff in place before the first of four Tests against England, starting in Centurion on December 26.

Despite calls for the resignation of Nenzani and the entire board, Nenzani said the board had been mandated by the organisation's members' council – made up of presidents of the 14 provincial affiliates – "to continue to guide us through this period and turn it around."

The press conference came after a tumultuous week during which five leading journalists had their accreditation withdrawn, a major sponsor announced it would not renew its agreement with CSA and chief executive Thabang Moroe was suspended on charges of misconduct.

Nenzani said a lack of trust in Moroe by Smith was a factor in negotiations which have been conducted sporadically over a period of three months.

Several prominent individuals, as well as the Gauteng cricket board and the SA Cricketers’ Association, called for the board to stand down but Nenzani said the issue had not been raised at a meeting of the members' council which started late on Friday and continued until the early Saturday.

He brushed off the resignations of three of the board's five independent directors.&nbsp;

"We thank them for their service and will engage in a process to fill the vacancies," he said.

Nenzani said the respected Jacques Faul, the chief executive of the Northerns cricket union and a former acting chief executive of SA, had agreed to again become the acting chief executive with immediate effect.

Graeme Smith set to become director of Cricket South Africa

A 20-year global moratorium on imposing tariffs on digital trade could end next week if India or South Africa makes good on threats, according to trade officials and documents, potentially forcing people to pay duties on software and movie downloads.

A 20-year global moratorium on imposing tariffs on digital trade could end next week if India or South Africa makes good on threats, according to trade officials and documents, potentially forcing people to pay duties on software and movie downloads. Since 1998, World Trade Organization (WTO) members have renewed a ban on import duties on so-called "electronic transmissions", worth up to $255 billion a year by one estimate. Some think this favours rich countries, given it received strong backing from Washington at the outset and most of the lost customs revenues are thought to be born by developing countries. Pressure is now growing to lift the ban as more books and movies become digital, potentially reducing revenues further. India and South Africa circulated an internal WTO document, reviewed by Reuters this week, saying that rising digitalisation compelled "a rethink of the role of the temporary moratorium" last year, citing the potential of 3D printing to manufacture products. It will be decided on next week and renewal requires full consensus. Asked about its position, South Africa's WTO Ambassador Xolelwa Mlumbi-Peter said in an emailed response this week that it was "still consulting on this important decision." India did not respond to a request for comment. "At the moment there are a number of countries that feel confident they can stand aside from the global consensus," said the International Chamber of Commerce's (ICC) Secretary General John Denton. "It could break the Internet." A proposal backed by 21 countries including China and Canada seeks to extend the ban for at least six months when it expires at year end. Deal-broker Switzerland said "a large part of the WTO has signalled its support for the Moratorium". Such duties could be difficult to apply and it is not clear how it would be determined where the digital product originated from and whether it is an import. "How do you put a tariff on a byte? How would you capture millions of data flows from multiple sources flowing across countries’ borders every minute of every day," asked Denton. However, the first possible answers are emerging. Indonesia created tariff codes for digital goods in 2018, fixing the level at 0 percent for now. Lost revenues? Should the moratorium end, it does not mean that tariffs will immediately follow, and Mlumbi-Peter stressed that. But this is seen as more likely in a new culture of permissiveness following the expected paralysis of the WTO's top ruling body after Dec. 10. "If someone tries to experiment putting customs duties on even a limited set of products or services, then there is a risk of immediate retaliation absent of the dispute settlement function," said the ICC's Andrew Wilson. Estimates of the ban's effect vary. At the top of the scale, a recent U.N. report said potential annual tariff revenue losses could be up to $10.4 billion a year, with more than $10 billion lost by WTO developing countries. "More and more production is going to be digitised in future so developing countries will lose tariff revenues," Rashmi Banga, the report's author, said. However, an OECD study questioned these assumptions, arguing that the revenue gains from lifting the ban would be relatively small and tariffs would lead to higher prices for consumers among other costs.

Trade war goes digital: Countries eye tariffs on Internet economy

Inflation in South Africa reached an eight-year low last month on the back of low fuel prices, official figures showed Wednesday.

"Annual consumer inflation continued its downward streak, dropping to 3.7 per cent in&nbsp;October from 4.1 per cent in September," South Africa's statistics department StatsSA said Wednesday, adding that the figure was the lowest since February 2011.

The announcement comes as a relief to Africa's most industrialised economy, whose currency has been weakened by years of low growth and mass layoffs.

StatsSA said the drop was mainly fuelled by a 4.9-per cent decline in fuel prices from October last year. &nbsp;

Food and non-alcoholic beverages, housing, and goods and services were the main contributors to the annual rise in prices.

Among food, the most notable price increases were observed among bread and cereal, fish and fruit.

Average inflation stood at 4.2 per cent between January and October in 2019, down from 4.6 per cent over the same period last year.

Leaders of the BRICS group of emerging economies on Wednesday criticised what they view as politically motivated protectionism at a time of a global slowdown and said their countries are doing their best to counter the trend.

At their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/brics-summit-2019-pm-modi-meets-russian-president-putin-261934">annual summit</a>, the leaders of China, Russia, India, Brazil and South Africa called for greater inter-BRICS trade and investment and urged the group's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/brics-nations-to-study-adding-countries-to-development-bank-261746">New Development Bank</a> to pump more funding into infrastructure and sustainable growth.

"Protectionist and bullying counter-currents bring shocks to international trade, adding to downward pressure on the world economy," Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose country is locked in a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-says-china-trade-deal-close-but-dashes-hopes-for-signing-details-261767">trade war with the United States</a>, told the summit in Brazil.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said global growth rates have been declining without interruption since the beginning of 2018 and will reach the lowest point in 10 years, citing International Monetary Fund forecasts.

"The BRICS countries are making considerable contributions to support growth," Putin said.

"The global economy has been influenced by the wide usage of unfair competition in trade, unilateral sanctions, including those that are politically motivated, and protectionism is flourishing," Putin said.

India's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/pm-narendra-modi-arrives-in-brazil-for-brics-summit-261796">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a> said his country aims to be a $5 trillion economy by 2024, up from 2.6 trillion in 2018. He said that BRICS targets for investment and trade must be more ambitious and welcomed suggestions to further reduce trade costs.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said Brazil is recovering international confidence but needs more economic reforms to create a more attractive business atmosphere for investors.

A meeting between <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-to-announce-billion-dollar-investment-in-brazilian-port-of-sao-luis-sources-261959">Bolsonaro and Xi</a> earlier in the day showcased how far relations have come since last year. Bolsonaro repeatedly bashed China in the lead up to last October's elections in Brazil, creating concerns that he could disrupt BRICS, one of the world's biggest trading partnerships.

China's growing presence had made it a target for Bolsonaro's nationalist rhetoric, including a repeated complaint: "The Chinese are not buying in Brazil. They are buying Brazil."

Since he took office, diplomats and business leaders in both countries have persuaded Bolsonaro to tone down his anti-China rhetoric.

"We want to more than expand, we want to diversify our trade relationship," Bolsonaro said at the event with Xi.

While diplomatic ceremonies highlighted common ground, not far across town a dispute over the Venezuelan embassy dredged up differences on one of Latin America's most pressing issues.

China and Russia back Venezuela's leftist President Nicolas Maduro, but Bolsonaro sees opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country's legitimate leader.

Supporters of Maduro and Guaido came to blows on Wednesday after representatives for Guaido entered the embassy in Brasilia in what Venezuela's foreign minister called a forceful invasion. The Brazilian government persuaded them to leave after 11 hours.

Leaders of the BRICS group of emerging economies on Wednesday criticised what they view as politically motivated protectionism at a time of a global slowdown and said their countries are doing their best to counter the trend. At their annual summit, the leaders of China, Russia, India, Brazil and South Africa called for greater inter-BRICS trade and investment and urged the group's New Development Bank to pump more funding into infrastructure and sustainable growth. "Protectionist and bullying counter-currents bring shocks to international trade, adding to downward pressure on the world economy," Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose country is locked in a trade war with the United States, told the summit in Brazil. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his country aims to be a $5 trillion economy by 2024, up from 2.6 trillion in 2018. He said that BRICS targets for investment and trade must be more ambitious and welcomed suggestions to further reduce trade costs. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said Brazil is recovering international confidence but needs more economic reforms to create a more attractive business atmosphere for investors. A meeting between Bolsonaro and Xi earlier in the day showcased how far relations have come since last year. They are buying Brazil." Since he took office, diplomats and business leaders in both countries have persuaded Bolsonaro to tone down his anti-China rhetoric. BRICS leaders rail against 'bullying' protectionism

Leaders of the BRICS group of leading emerging economy nations meeting this week will discuss opening their development bank to other countries to increase its capital to fund infrastructure and other projects, diplomats and the bank's head said.

The New Development Bank (NDB) launched in 2014 by China, India, Russia, Brazil and South Africa has a subscribed capital of $50 billion, of which $10 billion is paid capital.

Diplomats for Brazil and one other BRICS nation said expansion of the bank is on the agenda at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/pm-modi-to-visit-brazil-for-brics-summit-261491">annual summit</a> November&nbsp;13-14.

NDB President K.V. Kamath said the bank's membership is open to all members of the United Nations and its mandate is to mobilize funds for sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging economies and developing countries.

"The membership will be expanded gradually," he told Reuters in an interview by email but declined to name any countries.

Kamath rebuffed criticism that the bank has taken a long time to deliver loans to help boost economies amid slowing global growth.

"The NDB has gone a long way in four years, something that took some of our peer institutions decades to achieve," he said referring to other multilateral lending institutions.

As of Monday, the bank's total project approvals stood at $12.5 billion for 45 projects. In 2019 alone it approved 14 loans worth $4.4 billion, he said.

By the end of 2019, the bank projects total approvals to reach $14 billion to $15 billion, almost double the portfolio of the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

Among recent loans, the bank last month approved $500 million for Brazil's national Climate Fund project, known as Fundo Clima in Portuguese, which is aimed at helping the country meet its Nationally Determined Contribution, a target reducing carbon emissions under the Paris climate accord.

As India and Bangladesh get ready to lock horns in the first T20I of the three-match series, skipper Rohit Sharma on Saturday said that the side wants to focus on setting targets and defending them ahead of the T20 World Cup in 2020.

"We have looked at certain number of stats on how we chase and set target. Our numbers are great when we chase down the total. We want to focus on setting targets and defending them. The last T20I we played at Bengaluru against South Africa, we batted first on a sticky wicket as we wanted to challenge ourselves before T20 World Cup next year," Sharma told reporters.

"At the same time, we want to win games as well. We have not done well in the T20 format recently, probably we are ranked at number five in the ICC T20I rankings. We want to be at the top in all three formats of the game," he added.

Sharma also said that Rishabh Pant is a match-winner in the T20I format and needs to be given a consistent run as he can take the game forward on his day.

Both wicket-keepers (Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson) that we have in our squad are pretty talented. We have stuck with Pant, this is the format that gave him recognition. We have to stick with him for a while, we know how well he can take the game forward if he has his day," Sharma said.

The 32-year-old also said that the side has a lot of options and they need to be a given a number of games to get the best out of them. He also opined that both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and international cricket are different and have different challenges.

''We have a lot of options. They just need to have a number of games behind them. This is the best time for us to try all the guys that are in the squad. When they play in the IPL, that is a different ball game, when you play international cricket, it is a different situation. In international cricket, there are limited opportunities and you have to make the most of it," Sharma said.
