Former South African president Jacob Zuma was due back at a public inquiry into state corruption on Friday after his lawyers requested an adjournment because they said he was being questioned unfairly.

Zuma, ousted by the governing African National Congress (ANC) party in February 2018, ducked and dived during three days of testimony at the inquiry this week before his lawyers requested the adjournment on Wednesday.

The inquiry, which Zuma agreed to set up in his final weeks in office, is shining a spotlight on the allegations of corruption and influence-peddling that were a hallmark of his nine years in power.

Zuma, 77, has long denied the allegations against him. But since his ousting a year and a half ago he has fewer ways of defending himself.

Zuma's successor, President Cyril Ramaphosa, is on a drive to clean up politics.

Before the adjournment, Zuma's lawyers had argued that the former president shouldn't be cross-examined because they didn't believe evidence given by other witnesses had directly implicated Zuma in corruption and fraud.

They want Zuma to face a less rigorous line of questioning.

South Africa's deputy chief justice, Raymond Zondo, granted the adjournment to see whether Zuma's lawyers' concerns could be addressed.

Zuma, formerly head of intelligence for the outlawed ANC under apartheid, is a shrewd operator who survived several no-confidence votes before his ousting.

On Monday he told the inquiry he had been the victim of a decades-old plot hatched by foreign intelligence services and the apartheid government to get rid of him.

He denied that he had done anything unlawful with his friends the Guptas, three Indian-born businessmen who won lucrative state contracts during Zuma's time in power.

The Guptas, who haven't appeared at the inquiry, have denied that they used their relationship with Zuma to plunder state resources.

South Africa's ethics watchdog on Friday said President Cyril Ramaphosa misled parliament last year over a 500,000 rand donation to his campaign fund from a company facing extensive corruption allegations.

The country's ombudswoman Busisiwe Mkhwebane, said her investigations had shown that the president gave parliament "erroneous" information when he first responded to an opposition question over the October 2017 donation.

The money was given towards his campaign for the presidency of the ruling ANC party but Ramaphosa initially told lawmakers that the payment was to his son Andile for consultancy work for Bosasa, now known as African Global Operations (AGO).

Ramaphosa later admitted that it was a donation towards his campaign to become African National Congress party leader -- a hard-fought battle in which he beat ex-president Jacob Zuma's chosen candidate.

In a report released on Friday, Mkhwebane said, "Although President Ramaphosa may have justified correcting the earlier statement on erroneous or incomplete information at his disposal, he indeed misled parliament".

She said the president "should have allowed himself sufficient time to research a well-informed response," before responding to a question from the main opposition Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane.

"I, therefore, find that President Ramaphosa's conduct... although ostensibly in good faith, to be inconsistent with his office".

Mkhwebane said the way the funds were moved around from one account to another, before it was deposited into Ramaphosa's campaign account, raised suspicion of money laundering.

She has asked the country's prosecution authority to investigate whether that was the case.

Ramaphosa, who has promised to pay back the campaign funds, has denied wrongdoing.

After taking over from Zuma, Ramaphosa was elected South African President in May, staking his reputation on fighting corruption in a nation smarting from the graft scandal-tainted tenure of Zuma.

South Africa’s Jacob Zuma, back at inquiry, says his life is in danger

Former South African president Jacob Zuma told a corruption inquiry on Monday that he had never broken the law with the Gupta family, describing the businessmen at the centre of an influence-peddling scandal as friends.

Zuma also said he was the victim of a conspiracy by enemies who had tried to get rid of him for more than 20 years.

His appearance at the inquiry – set up to test allegations that Zuma allowed cronies to plunder state resources and influence government appointments – marked a dramatic fall from grace for a politician who long dominated the country’s politics.

Referring to the three Gupta brothers, Zuma said, "I never did anything with them unlawfully, they just remained friends. … Never, never did I discuss any matter that does not belong to them".

"They were businesspeople and successful businesspeople," Zuma continued. "I`m not a businessperson, I know nothing about business, I`m a politician, I know something about politics."

Zuma, ousted by the governing African National Congress (ANC) in February 2018 and replaced by President Cyril Ramaphosa, has consistently denied wrongdoing over his nine years in power.

Under pressure from rivals in the ANC, Zuma set up the corruption inquiry he now sits before in his final weeks as president, as a number of his colleagues, including Ramaphosa, feared scandals surrounding Zuma could indelibly tarnish the party`s reputation.

Zuma had avoided establishing the inquiry since a 2016 report by South Africa`s anti-corruption watchdog, the public protector, instructed him to do so to investigate allegations that three Gupta brothers had been able to influence ministerial appointments and had won state contracts improperly.

South Africa's Jacob Zuma denies breaking law with business brothers

Former South African president Jacob Zuma is due Monday to testify at a judicial inquiry where he faces tough questioning over allegations that he oversaw systematic looting of state funds while in power.

Zuma struck a characteristically relaxed tone ahead of his televised appearance, which could last for five days, tweeting a video on Sunday of himself dancing and singing "Zuma must fall" before laughing heartily.

"The commission asked me to come to testify and put forward any information that I might have," he told reporters last week. "We will see how things pan out, but I am going there."

The former president is accused of fostering a culture of corruption during a nine-year reign before he was ousted in 2018 by the ruling ANC party and replaced by Cyril Ramaphosa.

Zuma's supporters and opponents are expected to gather for noisy rallies outside the inquiry commission venue, while 200 members of the public are to attend the hearing on a first-come, first served basis.

Zuma, 77, is not legally required to appear at the inquiry into the so-called "State Capture" scandal, and it is unclear if he will cooperate with any cross-examination.

He has denied all wrongdoing and dismissed the concept of "state capture", while his lawyers have described the inquiry as an attempt to "ambush and humiliate" him.

His request to see questions in advance was denied by the inquiry commission, which invited him to appear "to give his side of the story" after other witnesses gave damning evidence against him.

Led by Judge Raymond Zondo, the probe is investigating a web of deals involving government officials, the wealthy Gupta family, and state-owned companies.

Bribes, cakes and death threats

According to Angelo Agrizzi, one of the inquiry witness, Zuma allegedly accepted a monthly $2,200 bribe delivered in luxury bags from a contracting firm that was trying to evade police investigation.

The money was in theory for his charity foundation.

Agrizzi said his company also organized free parties, bulk alcohol supplies, and birthday cakes to keep favor with Zuma's associates.

Former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene, who was sacked by Zuma in 2015, testified that Zuma pushed policies on nuclear power and aviation that were designed to benefit the Gupta family.

The Gupta brothers are accused of fraudulently profiting from government contracts including energy and transport deals under Zuma.

The family owned a uranium mine, which would have seen profits soar from the nuclear deal, as well as a portfolio of mining, technology, and media companies.

They allegedly held such sway over Zuma that they were able to select some of his cabinet ministers.

Former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas told the inquiry that the Guptas offered him the finance minister's job and even threatened to kill him after he refused to accept a $40 million bribe.

Zuma was forced to set up the inquiry in January 2018, shortly before he left office, after failing in a legal battle to overturn the instructions of the country's ethics ombudsman.

Sitting in central Johannesburg, it has heard from scores of witnesses over 130 days in session since last year.

Zuma has separately been charged with 16 counts of graft linked to an arms deal from before he became president.

The Indian-born Gupta brothers Ajay, Atul, and Rajesh have left South Africa and are now based in Dubai. They also deny any wrong-doing.

Eager to distance himself from the Zuma era, Ramaphosa has declared his presidency as a "new dawn" for the country and described the inquiry as a "very painful process".

South Africa's Jacob Zuma to testify in graft inquiry

AB de Villiers said he did not expect to be included in South Africa’s squad for the Cricket World Cup after telling captain Faf du Plessis that he was available, as he clarified his role in a selection drama that blew up in England.

South Africa endured a miserable tournament, exiting with only three wins from their nine pool matches.

Their cause was not helped when it was reported that De Villiers, who had retired from international cricket in May 2018, had spoken to Du Plessis about making himself available on the eve of the team’s squad announcement.

That led to accusations that De Villiers, one of the best-limited overs batsmen in the world, had been selfish in trying to force his way back into the squad.

He said, however, he was only reiterating what he had told an unnamed Cricket South Africa official a year earlier upon his retirement.

"Now the Proteas' World Cup campaign is over, and the team cannot be distracted, I would like to respond to unjustified criticism of me during the tournament," De Villiers said in a statement on Friday.

"I announced my retirement from international cricket in May 2018 because I wanted to reduce my workload and spend more time with my wife and young sons. Some have insisted I was motivated purely by money. They are wrong.''

"In truth, I have turned down many lucrative offers to play around the world, and have cut the time spent away from home each year from eight months to just over three months," he said.

De Villiers said that immediately after his retirement he was asked if the door was open for a return to the team, and he confirmed he would consider it.

In a phone-call to long-time friend Du Plessis during this year’s Indian Premier League, he repeated the door was open “if I was needed".

"I had been in decent form during the Indian Premier League and casually repeated what I had said when asked a year earlier, that I was available if required ... but only if required.''

"I made absolutely no demands at all. I certainly did not try to force my way into the World Cup squad on the eve of the tournament, and did not expect to be included," De Villiers said.

"Elements of our private conversation were disclosed to the media, and distorted to cast me in the worst possible light," he says.

"The story was not leaked by me, or anybody associated with me, or by Faf. Maybe someone wanted to deflect criticism. I don't know.''

"As a result, I was unfairly described as arrogant, selfish and indecisive but, with all humility, my conscience is clear. I am not angry with anybody," said De Villiers.

They are wrong.'' "In truth, I have turned down many lucrative offers to play around the world, and have cut the time spent away from home each year from eight months to just over three months," he said. De Villiers said that immediately after his retirement he was asked if the door was open for a return to the team, and he confirmed he would consider it. In a phone-call to long-time friend Du Plessis during this year’s Indian Premier League, he repeated the door was open “if I was needed". "I had been in decent form during the Indian Premier League and casually repeated what I had said when asked a year earlier, that I was available if required ... but only if required.'' "I made absolutely no demands at all. I certainly did not try to force my way into the World Cup squad on the eve of the tournament, and did not expect to be included," De Villiers said. De Villiers said the story was leaked to the media after South Africa’s loss to India, their third in a row at the World Cup, as a way of deflecting attention away from the team’s troubles. "Elements of our private conversation were disclosed to the media, and distorted to cast me in the worst possible light," he says. "The story was not leaked by me, or anybody associated with me, or by Faf. Maybe someone wanted to deflect criticism. I don't know.'' Out of the reckoning from the ongoing World Cup, skipper Faf du Plessis rued that had South Africa got an easier fixture at the beginning of the tournament things might have panned out differently for his team.

They lost all three encounters, severely denting their confidence.

"That first week was really tough for us. But that's the sport we play. I think it is crucial, especially for a team like us in tournaments like these, that you need to start well," du Plessis said after his side's nine-wicket victory to Sri Lanka.

South Africa registered only their second win of the tournament by defeating Sri Lanka by nine wickets in their penultimate game at The Riverside on Friday.

Du Plessis made particular mention of Dwaine Pretorius, who came off the bench to take 3/25, after not playing since the opening match against England.

"We were looking for someone that was accurate. It is about doing your job and the basics extremely well and that is not needing to bowl at 160kph or swinging the ball both ways consistently," he said.

Pretorius set the tone for South Africa to dismiss Sri Lanka cheaply and then bat without pressure in chase of a small target.

The top-order enjoyed the opportunity to spend time in the middle and both Hashim Amla and du Plessis scored unbeaten half-centuries, something that had been missing from South Africa's performances thus far.

After the early loss of Quinton de Kock, already-eliminated South Africa never looked troubled as Amla (80 not out) and Du Plessis (96 not out) put on 175 for the second wicket, playing with a kind of freedom not seen before by the team in a dismal tournament for the side.

Sri Lanka needed victory to move level with fourth-placed England in the race for semi-final places, but struggled with bat and ball against an opponent who have now beaten them in 17 of their last 19 meetings.

Sri Lanka produced a fast start to their innings that was halted by the immaculate line and length of Pretorius as South Africa limited their opponents to 203 all out three balls shy of 50 overs.

South Africa's players expressed bitter disappointment and even embarrassment after their elimination from the World Cup was ensured by their loss to Pakistan at Lord's on Sunday but they said they would learn lessons and return stronger.

The Proteas' chances of progressing in the tournament evaporated after they logged their fifth loss in seven matches, making it mathematically impossible for them to secure a top-four spot and a place in the semi-finals.

"It's becoming where it's a little bit embarrassing. We're trying, but it's just not good enough. Obviously, I'm human as well so it will keep chipping away at me," captain Faf du Plessis told reporters after a 49-run defeat at Lord's.

"I'm a very proud player and captain, and playing for South Africa means a lot for me, and the fact (is) that the results we're dishing out at the moment - you know it's really, really tough," he said.

The team's headline bowler, paceman Kagiso Rabada, said the whole team felt like they had failed to play to their usual standard, both on Sunday and throughout the tournament.

"Pakistan turned up, and we didn't," he said.

"We're very disappointed. We tried so hard at practices and we spoke about what we needed to do, but unfortunately we just couldn't bring it out into the field of play. And that's what you have to do in tournaments like this.

"We try to prepare, we do our analysis. We come in with a good mindset - it's just execution is one thing that's been a question mark for us," added Rabada.

Du Plessis said the team had been running low on confidence as their losses piled up and turning that around rested mostly with each individual player.

"For me at the moment, it's a confidence thing. The guys are playing with low confidence and therefore making more mistakes," he said.

"The responsibility lies with every player to try and make sure that he comes to the park and gives everything, and if confidence is an issue, you need to sort it out yourself.

"You know, if I could I would get my wand out and get some runs on the table for our batters. But I can't, unfortunately."

Rabada and Du Plessis said the team had lessons to learn, and that they would be fighting to get things right next time.

"We'll definitely be back firing, looking to nail some of the things that we wanted to nail in this tournament," Rabada said.

World Cup: South African players 'embarrassed' after early elimination

Haris Sohail smashed a rapid-fire 89 as Pakistan ended South Africa's World Cup hopes with a comfortable 49-run win at Lord's on Sunday.

Sohail's dominant 59-ball knock and a tidy half-century from Babar Azam helped Pakistan reach 308-7, a total that South Africa never threatened to surpass.

South Africa captain Faf Du Plessis offered their only real resistance with a 79-ball 63 in another poor batting display from his side.

Wahab Riaz and Shadab Khan took three wickets each as Pakistan condemned South Africa to a fifth defeat of the tournament that left them languishing ninth in the 10-team table.

Records, injuries and controversies in third week of Cricket World Cup

Captain Faf du Plessis was left contemplating the ruins of another World Cup campaign on the ground where South Africa experienced their greatest heartache in the competition 20 years ago.

The Proteas' hopes of reaching the semi-finals in England and Wales are all but over after a four-wicket defeat by New Zealand on Wednesday.

One minor consolation is that the recriminations from Wednesday's reverse at Edgbaston are unlikely to be as great as those at Warwickshire's headquarters 20 years ago when a disastrous run-out saw them tie with Australia and miss out on the final due to an inferior net run rate.

South Africa are still alive at the World Cup but with just one win from six matches, it would take an extraordinary combination of results to see them into the semi-finals from a 10-team round-robin group phase.

On Wednesday, South Africa fought hard to get to 241 for six on a difficult pitch after losing the toss.

And it so very nearly proved enough, with New Zealand needing a superbly paced 106 not out from captain and star batsman Kane Williamson to see them home with just three balls to spare.

Fans of AB de Villiers will argue this proves the Proteas were wrong to refuse the gifted batsman's offer to come out of international retirement for the World Cup, but others will say the offer came far too late for it to be accepted by South Africa's selectors.

"Kane played a great knock, you know. It's probably the difference between the two sides, just one guy taking it through. You need someone to go further, and we haven't had that," said Du Plessis.

Inevitably, given their painful World Cup history, the question of whether South Africa "choked" on Wednesday is bound to be asked.

"Choking", however, implies squandering a winning position, whereas this match in Birmingham was more of a see-saw contest determined largely by Williamson's knock.

Stuttering campaign

The New Zealand skipper is a world-class batsman and the truth is that South Africa's World Cup campaign was in trouble long before this fixture.

Losing Dale Steyn without the veteran fast bowler delivering a ball at the tournament was blow, but South Africa were gambling on the 35-year-old recovering from a longstanding shoulder injury.

Having tournament hosts England and another highly-fancied side in India as two of their early opponents meant South Africa had a tough start and it was no surprise when they lost both of those matches.

But what really derailed their campaign was a 21-run defeat by Bangladesh, where the Tigers piled up 330.

Several South Africa batsmen got starts in reply, including Du Plessis, who made 62, but nobody was able to play the major innings required.

The Proteas' painful history at the World Cup is littered with self-inflicted wounds.

As well as the 1999 run-out debacle, they exited in 2003 after misunderstanding the rules governing rain-affected matches and made the controversial decision to drop Kyle Abbott for what turned out to be a nailbiting semi-final loss to New Zealand four years ago.

South Africa did not help themselves on Wednesday when Williamson, who had then made 76, got a thin edge off Imran Tahir to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock.

The Proteas did not request a review, only for replays to show a nick.

"I think I was at long on at the time, and Quinny is the closest to the action. That's not where the game was won and lost," said Du Plessis.

This World Cup could well mark the last appearance at the global showpiece for players in their mid-30s such as Du Plessis and Proteas opener Hashim Amla, who never really got back to his best after being hit on the head by a bouncer from England's Jofra Archer.

"If you look at our batting unit, we've got some future talent and some promising players, but if you put our top six and you put the other top sixes around the world, purely on a numbers point of view, we won't be in the top three," admitted Du Plessis.

World Cup: New Zealand add to South Africa's stuttering campaign agony

"I really enjoy bowling to the likes of the ABs, Chris Gayles, the Virat Kohlis. I'm sure every bowler does. They grow up wanting to play this game for a reason, and that's to challenge yourself against the best players in the world. In my opinion, AB is still one of those players. It would be awesome to be playing against him," Sport24.ca.za quoted Boult as saying.

Soon after De Villiers expressed his desire to play in the premier tournament, his offer was rejected.

Even skipper Faf du Plessis opined over the issue saying that De Villiers' offer came in too late to consider.

Boult comments came ahead of his side's World Cup clash against South Africa.

World Cup: Hashim Amla becomes second-fastest batsman to register 8000 ODI runs

South pacer Lungi Ngidi has confirmed he is "100 per cent fit" to take the field in their World Cup match against New Zealand here on Wednesday.

South Africa's start to their World Cup campaign has been far from ideal, having lost three opening games and a wash-out tie, with a slew of injuries hampering their progress.

Ngidi played just the two opening games before sustaining a left hamstring injury in a match against Bangladesh.

"It's been tough. Injuries are never nice, but with the support staff that I've had around me it's been pretty good and I've been alright," Ngidi was quoted as saying by the official website of the Cricket World Cup.

"It's just been frustrating not being able to play. I've just finished a fitness test today and passed that, so I'm match-fit ready. It's 100 per cent. That's how the fitness test goes and if you're not bowling at 100 per cent then you're not ready to play," the young fast bowler added.

South Africa had been forced to field a depleted pace attack with legendary fast bowler Dale Steyn ruled out of the entire tournament, while Ngidi sat out of three matches.

The 23-year-old pacer's return is expected to bolster South Africa, who have only an outside chance to make it to the semi-finals after three losses from five games.

In their last match, South Africa finally managed to get a win under their belt after beating Afghanistan and now they would need to win the rest of the league stage matches in order to make the last four, and Ngidi feels New Zealand does have some weaknesses that could be exploited.

"I don't think their middle and lower order has been tested enough. They have got most of their runs at the top of the order, so if we can get one or two maybe we can test them. I think then you could be looking at a different situation with their batting," said Ngidi.

South Africa beat Afghanistan by nine wickets in Cricket World Cup

When South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa took the oath of office to become country's head of state on May 25 2019, it was Major Mandisa Nomcebo Mfeka who made headlines. Mandisa became South Africa's first black female fighter pilot.

Born in Ntuzuma, just outside Durban on South Africa’s east coast, Mandisa was part of the Hawk-formation display during the event. She is a Major in South African Air Force and flies Hawk Mk120 developed by the British Aerospace (BAE).

In an interview with WION, Mandisa gave an insight into her training and narrated her journey to her dream job. Her love for aviation and fascination with airplanes began when she was just 5 years old. She used to go to watch the air shows with her mother and grandmother at the Virginia Airport. Since that day to now, she sees a difference in her capabilities and strength and lives by a motto that "Sky is the baseline, it is from where my journey begins". Here are the excerpts from her conversation with WION.

WION: What led you to the dream of flying? When and how did you join the military and the air force?

Major Mandisa: The first time I was introduced to the aviation industry was at the age of five when my mother and grandmother used to take us to an airfield at the Virginia Airport which was close to our home. We would park at the side of the airport and watch the planes take off. It was really something very exciting for me. At that point in time, I did not realise that it was the career that I was going to pursue as a young female, especially when no one from my family had any background in aviation.

The first time I realized that I can become a pilot was at the age of 16. While I was doing my research in Maths and Science, I came across an article. As I turned the page, I saw a recruitment article by the South African Air Force (SAAF). My grades were really good at school and I met the entry requirements. I was thrilled and remember how excited I was. So, that was the first time I was introduced to flying.

WION: What was the first step/trick to your journey? Can you give some insights into your training?

Major Mandisa: The first step that I took after discovering the South African Air force was to apply for it quickly. I wanted them to know about my grades and my passion for becoming a fighter pilot. I negotiated with my dad and told him that I wanted to fly and do not want to compromise with any other options for my dreams. So, that was the first trick.

When it comes to training, it was really very tough and exciting as being a military person you need to challenge yourself at every step of your life. You have to be fit in terms of physical capabilities and mental strength. What I was less prepared for was the emotional challenge. My training brought out a very emotional person out of me. I realised that having dreams of flying is not that easy but not impossible too.

WION: Life in defence is different. Was it tough to become a military person?

Major Mandisa: Yes, it was very tough. I had always lived a very protected lifestyle. My parents were very protective as I was their first female child and also the eldest of all.

South African Air force was gruelling. I knew that the road I had chosen will take to me to the skies. I had always valued the fact that stern and firm training helped me build resilience to withstand pain. This all brought me closer to the spiritual aspect because I rely on them for healing and moving forward in life.

WION: Did you ever think that being a woman would prove a hindrance in your career?

Major Mandisa: I do not see any difference in any role played by women in any field. Gender never comes in your way. It is your perseverance and hard work for every goal.

WION: How was the feeling while sharing the spotlight with President Cyril Ramaphosa during the air display for his presidential inauguration?

Major Mandisa: I was very thrilled to be included in the flying past. More than anything, I was excited about the learning opportunities of the whole exercise and the entire preparation of it. The planning and construction process by Majors gave us the understanding of the flying dynamics and of leading the show to what it means to be a wingman. Another thing that we need to remember and focus on is always the risks involved. When it comes to aviation and during such ceremonial events, danger does not disappear.

WION: Combat flying is very precision-based and needs much planning and preparation. How did you prepare for it?

Major Mandisa: I am very lucky as the people around me are very experienced and helpful. I observe and learn things. When it comes to flying, I only see it as an opportunity and not as a difficulty because of my positive approach.

WION: Aviation is an expensive industry. Many women mostly give up their passions due to financial reasons. Did you also face any such problems?

Major Mandisa: Yes obviously. When you are going to the military, you are trained by the military and it absorbs all the cost... it is very expensive. But when It comes to civil aviation, lot of companies sponsor young individuals women who are passionate. There is always some hope for the people struggling financially to kickstart their dreams.

One advice that I would like to give to all young girls who dream of flying is to look for opportunities and never give up on their dreams as the career here is very rewarding and dynamic. When you are exposed to flying, it offers you satisfaction and excitement and at the end of the day, you won't regret anything.

WION: How do you see yourself change through flying?

Major Mandisa: There has been a lot of change in my life. I see myself as a more disciplined person. I remember, when I was being trained, there were few exercises that disengaged many parts of me and I had to question myself "Why Am I supposed to do all this?" But now I have an answer to it which is very visible.

WION: Your advice to parents?

Major Mandisa: People who love you will show their concerns, they will want to protect you. I was firm in my decision. I stood for what I had thought was best for myself.

When it comes to risk in aviation, then I must say that danger prevails at every step of life. It's you who will have to stand and fight for it. No one else will.

WION: Africa and India share history. What do you see in common as in relation to Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi?

Major Mandisa: Mandela and Mahatma, both shared a common purpose. They both loved humanity and wanted peace in their nations. Mahatma Gandhi fought passive resistance while Mandela, after coming out from jail, took a step for talking rather than fighting against the apartheid government. Their preaching is something I live by and want everyone to follow as well because at the of the day we are all one nation and one of a kind.

WION: Do you watch movies? Any favourites?

Major Mandisa: Yes, I do watch Bollywood movies. Shahrukh Khan's 'Om Shaanti Om', 'Baazigar' and few Amitabh Bachchan's movies are my favourites. I love watching them. They are so fun and entertaining. I grew up watching these movies and now I am thinking of watching some more.

WION: Apart from flying, what is that you enjoy the most?

Major Mandisa: - Swimming and adventurous sports are something I am very fond of.

WION: Your role model?

Major Mandisa: My role model is Oprah Winfrey. The kind of humanitarian work she has done and also for women is amazing. She is like a mega house of the platform that she earned. Apart from being a businesswoman and entertainer, she is a beautiful woman by heart and has always inspired me to be the leader of my field.

WION: What is your world view on the role of women in combat flying?

Major Mandisa: The role of women is no different than that of the males in the field of combat flying. I feel that it is a bias to say that women are more emotional than men. What I had seen here is that there is no difference in terms of emotional capabilities. They too have emotions, it's just that they keep them within while women let them flow.

In countries struck with poverty, especially in Africa here, women are the sole breadwinners for the families. In combat flying too, women have a common role with men... I do not see any difference.

WION: What keeps you going, flying?

Major Mandisa: For me, the sky is not the limit but the baseline from where I start my dreams. I see no limits. At the end of the day, when I see myself reaching so high as an individual, it is so instrumental and satisfying.

But now I have an answer to it which is very visible.

After not being able to perform as per his capabilities, Iqbal expressed confidence saying, "As long as I batted, I did well, and then I make one mistake and got out. I am capable and I have done it before against the best attacks in the world, and I don't see why I can't do it again. And if I can't, that is also life".

However, Iqbal has performed brilliantly between the 2015 and 2019 World Cup as his average 57.06 is second only to India batsman Rohit Sharma among openers.

He accumulated 2511 runs in 51 innings during this period which included seven centuries and 18 half-centuries.

"It is my expectations that is creating pressure. Only people close to me will know how I am feeling. I keep on going back to 2015 because I suffered, and so did my wife and family. It was a black chapter in my life. It is very easy to tell me that I have done well in the past. But I am not at all shy to say that I am worried that I don't go back to those days again. The beauty of the game, though, is, people forget everything after one or two good innings," he said.

Iqbal also acknowledged the fact that innings he played in the past do not really matter as it is only the present performances that matter.

He further added that he is hoping to turn things around in the next couple of games for his side by scoring runs.

"There's no 'enough' in cricket. I can easily point you towards my record in the last 50 matches. Nobody remembers it. It is always the present. But if I want to grow as a cricketer, I have to remember what I have done. I am trying hard, but I hope I don't try too hard, which probably I am. I hope if I score in one of the next couple of games, I will be up and running," Iqbal said.

World Cup: AB de Villiers' offer was too late to change team, says South Africa captain Faf du Plessis

Kagiso Rabada believes South Africa must put their off-field problems to one side as they look to revive their World Cup campaign against the West Indies at Southampton on Monday.

A tough opening week in the round-robin group phase has left the Proteas with little margin for error after three straight defeats by England, Bangladesh and India left their semi-final hopes hanging by a thread.

South Africa also saw senior fast bowler Dale Steyn ruled out of the World Cup through injury without bowling a ball.

Meanwhile, a row has broken out over whether South Africa's selectors were right to reject star AB de Villiers's offer to come out of international retirement for the World Cup, with some arguing the star batsman had simply left it too late to make himself available.

"There's just been a lot happening off the field and we are just looking to clear that out of our heads," said Rabada, the leader of the Proteas' attack in Steyn's absence.

"But it has been enjoyable," added Rabada, whose fellow quick Lungi Ngidi is an injury doubt for Monday's match.

"It's exciting. This is what you want. It has been enjoyable but it has come with its challenges in terms of our team."

While yet to hit top gear himself at the World Cup, Rabada has been encouraged by the performances so far of fellow fast bowlers such as England's Jofra Archer, Australia's Mitchell Starc and the West Indies' Oshane Thomas.

"They are all phenomenal bowlers. I enjoy watching other bowlers bowl. It's nice to see other people do well, but not against us," said Rabada jokingly.

"We all have our aspirations. We want to achieve certain goals. I don't think it puts any pressure on me (to perform).

"I know exactly what I want to get out of the game. When you admire other sportsmen, it can inspire you."

World Cup: Kagiso Rabada urges South Africa to ignore off-field problems

The World Cup match between South Africa and the West Indies was abandoned on Monday after persistent heavy rain in Southampton, with both sides earning a point each.

Earlier, West Indies paceman Sheldon Cottrell reduced Faf du Plessis's team to 29 for two before rain stopped play.

"Very disappointing, but you can't control the weather. We didn't get close to a game," Du Plessis said.

The West Indies are back in Southampton on Friday to play England and skipper Jason Holder hopes all-rounder Andre Russell will be fit to face the hosts after missing Monday's game with a knee injury.

"We are hoping he pulls up alright. I guess it is a blessing this game is over and we can look forward to the game against England," Holder said.

South Africa, desperately needing a win after defeats in their first three matches of the tournament in England and Wales, lost the toss and were put in to bat under threatening skies.

They were quickly in trouble, with Hashim Amla edging Cottrell to Chris Gayle at slip for just six, sparking the bowler's trademark celebration featuring a short march and salute.

That brought Aiden Markram to the wicket but he had only made five when he tickled a Cottrell delivery down the legside and wicketkeeper Shai Hope completed the catch to leave South Africa in deep trouble at 28-2 in the seventh over.

In the following over, delivered by Oshane Thomas, rain stopped play and the covers came on.

The West Indies are fifth in the World Cup table with three points after three matches, while South Africa are second from bottom after four games, leaving their hopes of making the semi-finals hanging by a thread.

South Africa face Afghanistan at Cardiff on Saturday and Du Plessis admitted his team were in need of a morale-boosting win against the minnows.

"Everyone should be fit for the next game. We are in a bad position but it's our own fault," he said.

"We haven't played our best cricket so far and we need a solid performance to get the team's confidence up."

South Africa versus West Indies World Cup match rained off

South Africa are refusing to admit that their World Cup race is all but over with all-rounder Chris Morris telling fans to stick with the team despite the third loss inside a week.

They were beaten by six wickets by India at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday – leaving the side with a massive task if they are to get through to the semi-finals.

South Africa were beaten in the tournament opener by England on Thursday and were then upset by Bangladesh on Sunday.

The defeat by India means they would really need to win all of their remaining six round-robin matches to stand any chance of progressing to the last four.

“Stranger things have happened at the World Cup before,” said Morris after top scoring for South Africa with 42 as they struggled to 227-9.

India reached the target with two and a half overs to spare.

“Obviously we are disappointed to lose three games so far but we ask the fans at home to stay with us and back us as much as you can and we will try and perform for you,” he told a news conference.

Morris said it had been a much better performance by the South Africans after their opening two losses.

“Our body language was not there in the first two games but today we addressed that. Overall I thought we were quite good," he said.

“A few opportunities came our way but then didn’t go our way. At the end of the day, if a good Indian team took so much time to get to the 227 target, it shows we bowled well. Maybe with a bit of luck, things could have gone our way.

“The guys know what is needed to be done. We are a bit disappointed and angry. But when the sun comes up tomorrow, we take on our next opponents. It is as simple as that,” Morris added.

South Africa now have a four-day break before facing West Indies in Southampton on Monday.
