The former union leader turned business tycoon has promised to introduce major economic reforms and extend a crackdown on corruption if his African National Congress (ANC) party is returned to power in Wednesday’s national election.

Ramaphosa's allies say a result close to 60 per cent in this week's parliamentary vote, which some opinion polls suggest could be possible, would strengthen his hand to deliver on those pledges.

But some analysts and ANC party insiders are sceptical that Ramaphosa would make much progress with reforms, even with a clear election victory.

They cite his tenuous grip over the party's decision-making bodies, where former comrades in the struggle against the brutal apartheid regime are at each other's throats in a high-stakes battle for power and wealth.

"Ramaphosa needs a united ANC to achieve his agenda, but he doesn't have that," said a veteran ANC politician who did not wish to be identified discussing internal rivalries. "His enemies are going nowhere."

"There's a herd mentality that if Ramaphosa gets a strong majority for the ANC, it will somehow strengthen him. That's not the case," he said.

Ramaphosa disputes that his hands will be tied if he is returned to power. At a campaign event last week in Johannesburg he said there would be a “step-change” in the pace of reform and that the economy was ready for lift off.

"Our government is now going to open up the valves of our economy and give our people an opportunity," he said.

Ramaphosa became the leader of the ANC in December 2017 after narrowly defeating a faction allied with his scandal-plagued predecessor Jacob Zuma. This will be Ramaphosa's first national election since taking over as head of state in February 2018, after roughly four years as Zuma’s deputy.

The president is under pressure to address gaping racial disparities in income and wealth that persist 25 years after the end of white minority rule.

He also wants to reverse a slide in support for the ANC, which has governed South Africa since 1994 but in recent years has lost support in major cities like the financial and political capitals of Johannesburg and Pretoria.

In the 15 months since he took office, Ramaphosa has been forced into uneasy compromises in key policy areas like land reform and fixing struggling state power firm Eskom, opposition politicians say.

Ramaphosa has vowed to accelerate the redistribution of land to the black majority, endorsing an opposition bill to amend the constitution to make expropriation without compensation easier.

But he also has offered assurances that investments and food security would not be threatened. In doing so, he satisfied neither radical left-wing nor business-friendly factions within his governing alliance and the opposition.

On Eskom, the president has promised trade unions that there will be no layoffs as part of a turnaround plan, even though company management and energy experts say the utility's bloated workforce is one of its biggest problems.

Getting land reform right and repairing Eskom will be critical to restoring investor confidence in an economy where growth has slowed to a trickle due to a toxic mix of corruption scandals and regulatory upheaval during Zuma's tenure.

"If you see progress in the clean-up of state-owned enterprises like Eskom that would mean that big headache that investors have would fade away," said Tilmann Kolb, an analyst at the financial services firm UBS Global Wealth Management.

ANC OPPONENTS

A key challenge for the president is the opposition he faces within his own party, sources in the ANC said. A close Zuma ally, Ace Magashule, is in charge of the day-to-day running of the party.

And, while some senior party figures previously aligned with Zuma have shifted their support to Ramaphosa, he still has to spend time managing opponents within the ANC, sources say.

The ANC's list of parliamentary candidates contains many hardliners who are opposed to Ramaphosa's reformist agenda and could frustrate his initiatives in parliament.

Ramaphosa has to choose all but two members of his next cabinet from his party's parliamentary caucus. While analysts expect him to appoint close confidants to key posts like finance minister and foreign minister, he may have to hand lesser posts to opponents he wishes to bring onside.

"Within the ANC you adopt an inclusive approach. You are obviously sensitive to the fact that you could be accused of just appointing your own supporters," said one ANC executive member aligned with Ramaphosa.

A challenge to Ramaphosa's leadership could emerge at the next party conference in 2022 -- or even before if his enemies can muster enough support.

Ramaphosa convinced the party leadership to instruct Zuma to resign last year, and Zuma did the same to his predecessor, Thabo Mbeki.

NO GROWTH SURGE

Ramaphosa’s ability to bring about change during his time in office has been limited, according to analysts and opposition politicians.

Ramaphosa has pledged to bail out Eskom and restructure it. He has established judicial inquiries that have exposed corruption during Zuma's time in office. Zuma denies he was at fault.

But the president has not generated the economic growth that some experts predicted and he targeted when campaigning for ANC leader.

Investors want to see efforts to overhaul rigid labour laws and cut red tape. But analysts say that could be difficult, as Ramaphosa needs to appease the trade union federation COSATU, a close ANC ally that favours a strong role for the state in the economy.

"We don't see strong structural reforms even after elections," said John Morris, a Bank of America Merrill Lynch strategist.

Ramaphosa could also face pressure to appease more radical elements in his party who would like to see the ANC pursue wealth redistribution aggressively, particularly following a rise in support for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a far-left opposition party.

The EFF backs populist policies like nationalising mines -- policies which have spooked investors.

South Africa's Ramaphosa faces obstacles to reform

South Africa is due to hold parliamentary and provincial elections on Wednesday, amid frustration with a lack of progress 25 years after Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress (ANC) swept to power at the end of white minority rule.

South Africa to vote on May 8, know key issues in S. Africa’s May 8 election

South Africa goes to polls this week in what will be the sixth elections in the country since the end of apartheid in 1994. The elections, due on May 8 is expected to be a referendum on the ruling African National Congress (ANC) that has been in power since 1994 but now faces infighting and division.&nbsp;

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa who took over from Jacob Zuma last year is facing a tough battle. Corruption, jobs remain a key issue for South Africans in major cities like Pretoria, Johannesburg and Durban.

At the Univesity of Pretoria, WION spoke to a few students, who were divided if Cyril will make a comeback.

One student said, "I will say he has good chances of winning. The problem is he has promised us as South Africans that he will tackle corruption in ANC. Which, hasn't been done, or it has not been done in a way that the general public can notice.''

Another female student retorted, "But then Ramaphosa promised things and he delivered. Example, the rand (African currency) has not been fluctuating as much and compared to the dollar it has been stronger. Our foreign relations have grown in such a way to get investors."

Corruption remains a huge issue, especially under former president Zuma, who was mired in corruption allegations. Other contenders in the elections are Mmusi Maimane's Democratic Alliance (South Africa) and the far-left political party Economic Freedom Fighters EFF which can disturb the calculus.&nbsp;

One student said, "EFF is thriving since it cares about a post-apartheid generation."

Nelson Mandela's legacy continues to play a role. This year South Africa marks 25 years since the end of apartheid. Country's founding father Nelson Mandela's legacy continues to play an important part of political life especially the young democracy.&nbsp;

"He played an important role in the history of South Africa, especially since he was on the forefront of the struggle. He oversaw a peaceful transition. It is important to vote as black people since we didn't have that privileged earlier", said a lady in Johannesburg.&nbsp;

Asked about the Rainbow nation, Mandela dreamed off, a young South African working in a hotel said, "We see nothing. It's next to impossible right now, it's hard to see, South Africa will ever be the rainbow nation we hoped for, it is very difficult right now."

Brand South Africa, working under's Minister of Communications and Telecommunications, and who focuses on the country's image, believes democracy is the country's USP in a continent where democracy is a rare commodity.

Judy Smith-Höhn, General Manager, Brand South Africa, told WION in Johannesburg, "25 years is a great achievement...Something, we are proud of. As you know, Democracy is not a smooth ride. It allows everyone's voices to be heard and there will be issues of contention. As long as we allowed it to be discussed, then we are on a good path."

And as with every election anywhere, fake news is a major problem. Especially after the xenophobic riots in Durban in March. The rioters had attributed to President Cyril Ramaphosa's speech at ANC's election manifesto contributing to xenophobic felling. Rampaphosa had called for a tougher line on undocumented foreigners.

"We must remain vigilant. One needs to build digital capacity in future. Digital capacity to monitor. We had cases, suddenly on Friday a news story breaks, and everyone jumps into arms. Then you find the source of it, then you drill it, you say hang on. It is taking more time, more resources", &nbsp;Petrus de Kock; General Manager for Research; Brand South Africa, replied to WION when asked how the country is tackling fake news.

The country is excited about the elections. Airwaves are already celebrating and giving the wall to wall coverage of the election. While Mandela is the towering figure, his legacy of the rainbow country is something that unites South Africa and will continue to do so in generations to come.

"Unfortunately the numbers have risen to 51. In previous years we have tried to remove people from low-lying areas," a regional minister, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, told SA FM radio.

Heavy rains have lashed South Africa in recent days, with the southern and eastern parts of the country badly hit since the start of Easter weekend.

Ramaphosa said that during times like these we should work together to reach out to affected communities.

"Our hearts go out particularly to families and communities who have been directly affected by death, injury and the loss of property," Ramaphosa said in a statement.

"This situation calls on all of us to pull together as a country to reach out to affected communities," Ramaphose added.

Rescuers continue to comb debris for those who might be trapped underneath landslides. South African military personnel have been dispatched to help rescue and evacuation efforts.

Indian Premier League (IPL) side Mumbai have signed South African pace bowler Beuran Hendricks as an injury replacement for West Indian Alzarri Joseph for the remainder of the season, the IPL franchise said on Tuesday.

Joseph, who was a replacement for injured New Zealand pacer Adam Milne, had a stellar IPL debut this month when he recorded figures of six wickets for 12 runs against Hyderabad, the best bowling figures in the competition's history.

However, he failed to build on that performance and did not pick up a single wicket in his next two matches, leaking runs at a rate around 10 per over.

Joseph, 22, dislocated his right arm while fielding in the five-wicket loss to Rajasthan over the weekend.

Hendricks, who previously played for IPL side Punjab in 2014 and 2015, has played 10 Twenty20 internationals for South Africa, picking up 16 wickets.

Mumbai, who are third in the standings, next play Chennai away on Friday.

South African Indian-origin singer Vandana Naran has been flooded with congratulatory messages after the launch of a CD featuring the Hanuman Chalisa in six different musical variations.

Naran performed some of the items live at the annual United Hanuman Chalisa held in Lenasia, the sprawling Indian township south of Johannesburg, on Sunday, where bhajan groups from all over the country rotated in 20-minute sessions for over 12 hours non-stop to chant the devotional prayer.

The Hanuman Chalisa is a 40-verse devotional composition by Goswami Tulsidas, better known as the author of the mythological epic Ramcharitmanas, in praise of Lord Hanuman.&nbsp;

"We decided to put together this CD in different versions of the Hanuman Chalisa so that it would find appeal to different age groups," Naran told PTI.

"There are traditional versions that will appeal more to the elderly group, and then there are more modernised music versions for the younger group, using electronic music as background.&nbsp;

"The words, of course, stay exactly the same, but the renditions are in different tunes," singer added.&nbsp;

Naran, who has won a number of local song contests and has performed internationally, trained in Indian classical music as a child with her sister Jagruthi in the US, while their father Jagdish was working there for four years.

On the family's return to South Africa, the sisters and Naran, in particular, further their musical interests, with Naran concentrating on vocals and Jagruthi on music composition.

Jagdish assists with technical studio recordings.

The family also ran musical lessons online for a few years.

During the 150th anniversary of the birth of Nelson Mandela last year, the trio produced the world's first South African national anthem translation into Hindi, adapting lyrics composed by a schoolteacher from Pietermaritzburg, where Gandhi's path to Satyagraha was born 125 years earlier after he was thrown off a train reserved for whites.&nbsp;

South Africa have included off-form opening batsman Hashim Amla in their squad for the Cricket World Cup in England and Wales starting next month, but there is no place for all-rounder Chris Morris.

Amla’s selection has been the topic of hot debate. He has been a stalwart at the top of the order for the last decade, but his form in all formats has been called into question in the past year.

In One-Day International cricket he has managed a single century in his previous 16 innings, dating back to the start of 2018, at an average of 35.26.

He was given the opportunity to find form in domestic cricket over the last few weeks, but has a top-score of 32 in six innings, failing to reach double-figures in three of those.

"We are very happy with the squad we have been able to put together and have every confidence in their ability to do our country proud at the World Cup," Cricket South Africa selection convener Linda Zondi said.

"The fact that we have managed to win our last five series in a row in this format underlines the quality of the team that Faf will lead into the contest.

"The final selection is also the result of a very rigorous search we have conducted, leaving no stone unturned, to make sure that we have made the best use of the options available to us."

Morris's exclusion as an all-rounder is a surprise given his form in the Indian Premier League and his death-bowling ability, but the selectors have instead opted for Dwaine Pretorius and Andile Phehlukwayo, with only one of those ever likely to play at any given time.

Fast bowlers Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje were both injury doubts, but have been selected, with the former especially crucial to the side given his wicket-taking ability and economy in the opening overs.

"Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje are well on the way to recovery and we expect them to be ready for our pre-tournament camp next month," Zondi added.

Rassie van der Dussen, who only made his debut for the side in January but averages 88.25 from his eight ODI innings, was chosen ahead of Reeza Hendricks, while test opener Aiden Markram also gets the nod on the back of some excellent domestic form.

EXPERIENCED TRIO

Faf du Plessis will captain the side, with experienced batsman JP Duminy and fast bowler Dale Steyn also included.

Imran Tahir will be the starting leg-spinner, with the guile of Tabraiz Shamsi another option in that department.

South Africa have opted not to select a specialist wicketkeeper as back-up to Quinton de Kock, but instead will rely on part-timer David Miller, who wore the gloves for some of the recent 5-0 series sweep of Sri Lanka.

South Africa, seeking a first World Cup trophy win, open their campaign against England at The Oval on May 30.

Squad: Faf du Plessis (captain), Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla, David Miller, JP Duminy, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi.

"The final selection is also the result of a very rigorous search we have conducted, leaving no stone unturned, to make sure that we have made the best use of the options available to us." Morris's exclusion as an all-rounder is a surprise given his form in the Indian Premier League and his death-bowling ability, but the selectors have instead opted for Dwaine Pretorius and Andile Phehlukwayo, with only one of those ever likely to play at any given time. EXPERIENCED TRIO Faf du Plessis will captain the side, with experienced batsman JP Duminy and fast bowler Dale Steyn also included.

Kagiso Rabada made a name for himself when he delivered consecutive six yorkers in the <a href="IPL 2019: Kagiso Rabada leads Delhi to Super Over win after Prithvi's 99">'Super Over' to restrict Kolkata's run-machine Andre Russell </a>and successfully defend mere 10 runs to hand Delhi a victory in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl-2019">12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL)</a>.&nbsp;

However, Rabada, who is the leading wicket-taker in this season so far, feels the team hasn't used him as a proper upfront bowler and rely more on his death bowling.&nbsp;

When asked what strategy helped him scalp 11 wickets in six games, Rabada said, "Basically, in death, I feel like batsmen come at you more which gives you more chances of getting a wicket. However, in saying that, I also haven't been used really as an upfront bowler. Either I come first change or I come second change. And yes, batsmen are more conservatives."

Rabada made his debut in IPL in 2017 and had clinched just six wickets in the six games, while in this season he is the Purple Cap holder as of now.

Sharing how relieving it is for him as a bowler, Rabada said it feels good to contribute towards the team's success. &nbsp;

"Yes, as well as excited to come back. In my first season, I did just okay, or a bit more than okay I guess. I feel glad that I have contributed towards the team's success and I am working towards my personal growth and I am glad that it is heading the right direction."

Rabada's wicket tally isn't limited to dismissing just the lower batting order but it includes batsmen who are known for their destructive batting in the T20 format.&nbsp;

So far, he has dismissed the likes of like Kolkata's hit machine Andre Russell, Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Hyderabad's in-form batsman David Warner.

When asked whose dismissal did he enjoy the most and will call his favourite, Rabada was quick to take the name of his South African teammate and Bangalore's AB de Villiers.&nbsp;

"I guess, I always play with AB, so playing against him on a big stage and I got him out. He is the most talented batsmen I have ever bowled to.&nbsp;And when you are standing at the top of your mark, you know, you really need to be on your A game. So I think I enjoyed his wicket because growing up I always used to admire him and then playing alongside him was always great and now playing against him. You really have to test yourself and I was looking forward to it."

The South African cricketer added a pun to his statement saying De Villiers will surely gonna be coming after him.

Delhi are currently placed at the&nbsp;sixth position with three wins and three reverses. They need to win their next few games to reach the playoffs without much hassle.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When asked what strategies have they planned for the upcoming encounters, Rabada said he believes in taking it game by game.

"I think taking it game by game and taking it one ball at a time is the best way to look at it, is the best way to approach it. And remember to have fun. And we need to learn and learn quickly how to go about the game in certain moments where we have felt we lacked because that is where we are going to put pressure on other teams and that's how we are going to win this tournament."

The side has been inconsistent with their performance. Though few batsmen like Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant and skipper Shreyas Iyer have performed in individual games, the side lacked collective performance.&nbsp;

WION speaks exclusively to Delhi Capitals pacer, South African Kagiso Rabada, who is currently the highest wicket-taker in IPL 2019. Rabada assesses his team's campaign at the halfway stage of the tournament, talks about his lethal yorkers and taming the in-form Andre Russell, and why dismissing AB de Villiers holds a special place in his heart.

Veteran batsman Hashim Amla has pulled out of the South African One-Day International squad to play Sri Lanka for family reasons, granting a reprieve for opener Reeza Hendricks who had been dropped for the final two matches of the series.

"Hashim has asked to be excused from the last two ODIs of the current series on compassionate grounds since his father is critically ill," Proteas team manager Mohammed Moosajee confirmed in a statement on Tuesday.

Hendricks played as an opener in the first three games of the series, all won by South Africa, but managed scores of only 1, 29 and 4, dealing a blow to his chances of making the squad for the World Cup in England and Wales starting in late May.

The experienced Amla, 35, is seen as a certainty to travel to the global showpiece tournament, but had been rested for the start of the series to allow Hendricks to stake his claim.

The fourth ODI will be played in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.

South Africa's Hashim Amla to miss ODIs on compassionate grounds

Former South African president Jacob Zuma used the country's intelligence services for his own political and personal interests, most notably against his successor, Cyril Ramaphosa, a government report charges.

Published Saturday on Ramaphosa's initiative, the report of about 100 pages details "serious breaches of the Constitution, policy, law, regulations and directives" by Zuma during his nearly nine years in office.

The State Security Agency (SSA) targeted Ramaphosa in the run-up to his becoming head of the ruling African National Congress in 2017, and then president, it said. Zuma stepped down in early 2018 amid charges of massive corruption.

The agency was "able to infiltrate and penetrate the leadership structure" of the movement against Zuma, said the report, drawn up by a team under former minister Sydney Mufamadi said.

The SSA became a "cash cow" for many, both inside and outside the agency, it added.

Ramaphosa has promised to root out corruption and, in a strong statement on the report, condemned the way the intelligence services had been politicised.

"A key finding of the panel is that there has been political malpurposing and factionalisation of the intelligence community over the past decade or more that has resulted in an almost complete disregard for the Constitution, policy, legislation and other prescripts," the president said.

A review should consider splitting the SSA in two to create a domestic and a foreign service, he added.

South Africa have recalled fast bowler Lungi Ngidi to their one-day international squad for the five-match home series against Sri Lanka, restoring their first-choice fast bowling line-up ahead the World Cup in England.

Ngidi made a successful return to provincial cricket this month after injuring his knee in November and along with Kagiso Rabada and Dale Steyn, is an important element of the side as South Africa seek to win a first World Cup trophy.

"His recent form for the Titans in the (domestic) One-Day Cup has been most impressive and he is clearly match fit for international cricket again," Cricket South Africa selection convener Linda Zondi said in a statement on Sunday.

There is also a first call-up for fast bowler Anrich Nortje, who is also back from injury.

"We want to see what he can offer the Proteas after his highly impressive form in the Mzansi Super League. Outright pace is not something that you can coach, and he looks another exciting addition to our pace arsenal," Zondi added.

South Africa have rested experienced opener Hashim Amla, while all-rounder JP Duminy has still not returned from a shoulder injury sustained in October.

The first ODI against Sri Lanka will be played in Johannesburg on March 3, with the series to conclude in Cape Town on March 16.

South Africa open their World Cup campaign against hosts England at the Oval on May 30.

South Africa recall fit again Lungi Ngidi for Sri Lanka ODI series

Sri Lanka's historic 2-0 Test series victory over South Africa had seemed somewhat fanciful when they arrived in some disarray and on a long losing streak, but leave as the first Asian side to win a series in the country.

South Africa had whitewashed Pakistan 3-0 at the start of the year and were on a run of seven home Test series wins in a row, dating back to 2016.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, had been whitewashed 3-0 at home by England at the end of 2018 and then axed captain Dinesh Chandimal after losing successive away series in New Zealand and Australia - during which they lost three out of the four Tests contested.

In South Africa, they were missing injured talisman Angelo Mathews and had coach Chandika Hathurusingha reportedly at odds with his own board after being removed as an on-tour selector.

Hence it was little wonder that a buoyant and confident South Africa were odds on to secure a comfortable win.

But after Sri Lanka were able to blast their way to a one-wicket victory in the first Test in Durban thanks to a remarkable unbeaten 153 from Kusal Perera in the second innings, they looked the more confident and assured team in the second match, cruising to an eight-wicket win on Saturday.

Dimuth Karunaratne, captaining the team in the series, said the disappointing tours in Australia and New Zealand had laid the platform for their success in South Africa.

"Those two tours were really tough and we learnt a lot of things," Karunaratne said. "After that I think the players wanted to do something better for the team and for themselves as well.

"They realised quickly what to do and what not to do (in South Africa), stuck to the basics and started to enjoy their game.

"I want to tell the younger players especially that they did really well. They all put their hands up at different times and did a really good job for me."

BATTING WOES

Sri Lanka won the series despite first innings scores of 191 and 154 in the two Test matches, after which the South African batsmen could not capitalise on good batting wickets.

"The only concern for me is first innings batting, so we have to make sure that we do better," Karunaratne admitted. "All the time we were behind the game but we came back hard. The bowlers did a great job to keep us in the game."

Karunaratne admitted the enormity of their achievement was just setting in.

"It’s a great feeling for me and the team. It’s not easy when you come to South Africa, so to win the series 2-0 is brilliant.

"It’s been a lot of hard work, but the guys did really well and enjoyed it a lot, which is why I think we created history."

South Africa expressed shock and dismay over Pulwama attack

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/caster-semenya-takes-gender-rule-challenge-to-sports-court-198087">Caster Semenya</a> has said the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) breached confidentiality regulations ahead of her appeal hearing on Monday where she is fighting for her athletics future.

The South African 800-metres double Olympic champion is seeking to overturn a new set of IAAF regulations that are aimed at lowering the testosterone levels of hyperandrogenic athletes.

The appeal, being heard at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland, could be a landmark case for the sport with wide-reaching consequences.

Semenya believes the IAAF breached confidentiality rules of the hearing after they released the names of five expert witnesses they will bring to the CAS to testify on their behalf.

"The arbitration proceedings are subject to strict confidentiality provisions and this information should not have been released‚" Semenya's lawyers said in a statement on Monday.

"Ms Semenya believes the IAAF press release is a clear breach of the confidentiality provisions that was orchestrated in an effort to influence public opinion in circumstances where the IAAF knew that Ms Semenya would not be prepared to respond because she was complying with her confidentiality obligations.

"As a matter of fairness Ms Semenya raised this issue with the CAS and has been granted permission to publicly release information responding to the IAAF press release‚ including disclosing the experts who are testifying in support of Ms Semenya's case. This information will be released tomorrow."

An IAAF spokesperson told Reuters they believe they were within their rights to make their witness list public.

"The IAAF does not believe the list of witnesses it will be calling is confidential, just their evidence at CAS," the spokesperson said.

"CAS left the decision for all parties to release their witness list to the parties involved. This was agreed."

The IAAF have named Dr Angelica Hirschberg, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, as a witness, along with David Handelsman, Professor of Reproductive Endocrinology and Andrology at the University of Sydney, and physicist Joanna Harper.

The other two witnesses will be Doriane Coleman, a Professor of Law at Duke Law School, and Richard Auchus, a former Professor of pharmacology at the University of Michigan.

The IAAF regulations stipulate that women with elevated testosterone take medication to reduce their level before being allowed to compete, but only in the middle-distance events of between 400- and 1500-metres where it is claimed the advantage is most felt.

'FAIR COMPETITION'

IAAF President Sebastian Coe told reporters on Monday that the regulations are aimed at levelling the field between hyperandrogenic athletes and those with normal levels of testosterone.

"The core value for the IAAF is the empowerment of girls and women through athletics. The regulations that we are introducing are there to protect the sanctity of fair and open competition," he said.

The IAAF's previous attempts to regulate testosterone in female athletes fell foul of a CAS ruling in 2015 following an appeal on behalf of Indian Dutee Chand, who had been banned from competing because of her high levels.

CAS claimed in their judgement that the IAAF had not provided sufficient evidence that hyperandrogenic athletes gained a significant advantage due to their testosterone count.

The global governing body now claims to have that evidence, but it is believed Semenya will bring experts to prove holes in the IAAF research during the hearing that is scheduled for five days.

A verdict could take up to a month to be reached, according to CAS.

Caster Semenya has said the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) breached confidentiality regulations ahead of her appeal hearing on Monday where she is fighting for her athletics future.

Caster Semenya has said the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) breached confidentiality regulations ahead of her appeal hearing on Monday where she is fighting for her athletics future. This information will be released tomorrow." An IAAF spokesperson told Reuters they believe they were within their rights to make their witness list public. "The IAAF does not believe the list of witnesses it will be calling is confidential, just their evidence at CAS," the spokesperson said. "CAS left the decision for all parties to release their witness list to the parties involved. This was agreed." The IAAF have named Dr Angelica Hirschberg, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, as a witness, along with David Handelsman, Professor of Reproductive Endocrinology and Andrology at the University of Sydney, and physicist Joanna Harper. Kusal Perera became a national hero in Sri Lanka on Sunday after scoring an unbeaten 153 to guide his country to a sensational first Test victory in South Africa.

The country's cricket legends and politicians lauded Perera, who has become a linchpin for the ailing national side since fighting off doping charges in 2016.

Former skipper Kumar Sangakkara, who had staunchly defended Perera when he was suspended in December 2015, called the performance at Kingsmead in Durban on Saturday "unreal".

Perera scored 67 in an unbroken last-wicket stand with Vishwa Fernando which gave his underdog team a sensational victory.

Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also took to Twitter to hail the win.

"Congratulations to our cricket team on snatching a victory from the jaws of defeat," Sirisena said.&nbsp;

"Kusal Janith Perera makes mother Sri Lanka very proud today! Keep fighting! "Great spirit by @kusaljperera and all the youngsters #SAvSL," added Wickremesinghe while thanking the national side which has been the butt of jokes due to poor recent results.

Sri Lanka sensation Kusal Perera hailed for Test-winning heroics

Kusal Perera carried Sri Lanka to a sensational one-wicket win on the fourth day of the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead on Saturday as he hit a career-best 153 not out.

Perera and Vishwa Fernando put on an unbeaten 78 in a last-wicket partnership to secure only Sri Lanka's second win in 14 Test matches in South Africa.

Victory seemed unlikely when the ninth wicket fell with the total on 226, with the tourists chasing a target of 304.

But the left-handed Perera successfully farmed the strike, with South African captain Faf du Plessis persisting with wide-spread fields for the in-form batsman, while Fernando only had to face 27 balls during a 96-ball partnership.

Perera was on 86 when the ninth wicket fell but managed to keep most of the strike and to hit some telling blows in an innings of 200 balls which included 12 fours and five sixes.

"It was a superman effort," said Du Plessis. "He (Perera) deserves all the accolades."

South Africa took the second new ball with the total on 263 but still kept most of their fielders on the boundary for Perera, who hit sixes off both Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada before slashing Rabada to third man for the winning boundary.

Perera, who came into the match with a career batting average below 30 and with his only previous century in 14 previous Tests having been made against Zimbabwe in Harare two seasons ago, shared three important partnerships.

He put on 58 for the fourth wicket with debutant Oshado Fernando (37) and 96 for the sixth wicket with Dhananjaya de Silva (48) before his extraordinary association with Vishwa Fernando.

The stand with Oshado Fernando was broken by Dale Steyn, who had Fernando caught at second slip by South African captain Faf du Plessis. Two balls later he caught Niroshan Dickwella off his own bowling.

Sri Lanka were still a distant 194 runs short of their target when Perera was joined by De Silva, Sri Lanka’s last recognised batsman.

South Africa, who were without opening bowler Vernon Philander because of a strained left hamstring, struggled for the next two hours as Perera and De Silva brought the target down to single figures.

Kusal Perera takes Sri Lanka to sensational win in South Africa

South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa was the chief guest at the 70th Republic Day Parade during his first state visit to India on January 25-26 this year.&nbsp;

President Matamela and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held extensive discussions on a wide range of issues of bilateral, regional and global importance.

In the post-Cold War era, the relationship between the two countries has improved significantly with India and South Africa having fostered a strategic partnership through the Red Fort Declaration of 1997 and the Tshwane Declaration of 2006.&nbsp;

The formation of the India-Africa Summit in 2008 has further underscored the desire of the two sides to deepen the engagement to fulfil their interests in an unpredictable regional and global order.&nbsp;

Over the last four years, the Modi government’s efforts have truly elevated the relationship between India and South Africa to a new height.&nbsp;

One highlight of this intense bilateral engagement was the participation of 41 African countries in the third India-Africa Forum Summit, held in Delhi in 2016. During these four years, several ministers of the Union cabinet, including Prime Minister Modi, have visited South Africa.&nbsp;

The recent visit of Ramaphosa was the latest development towards re-energising the ties.

Indeed, it gave a big boost to security and defence cooperation, with the two sides having agreed to enter into a three-year strategic engagement. &nbsp;

This, in turn, will serve the two countries’ interests. India and South Africa are two major regional powers in the Indian Ocean, both are strategically located and feel that cooperation between them is indispensable to maintain peace and security in the region. &nbsp;&nbsp;

It is in this context that the South African National Defence Force will participate in the first Multinational India-Africa Field Training Exercise at Pune in March this year, enabling the two forces to understand each others’ functioning. &nbsp;

The South African defence industry has reaffirmed its desire to work with India in the manufacturing of defence hardware under the Make in India Initiative, which is a significant step towards meeting India’s defence requirements and turning this country into an arms-manufacturing hub.&nbsp;

It is precisely in this light that the Ministry of Defence has lifted the ban on South Africa’s state-owned defence company, Denel SOC Ltd.&nbsp;

To boost ties with South Africa and other African countries, the aim is effectively developing a counter-balance against Beijing, especially when China has focused on expanding its influence in the Indian Ocean and beyond.&nbsp;

Another aspect of India-South Africa relations are their expanding economies, with bilateral trade reaching to rise to $10.65 billion in 2018-19 from $9.38 billion in 2017-18.&nbsp;

In 2016, the two countries set a target of doubling bilateral trade and investment to $20-billion by 2021.Over 150 Indian companies have invested in South Africa, with India having emerged as one of the top five trading partners of South Africa.&nbsp;

While these investments have fuelled developmental initiatives in South Africa, New Delhi sees this continent as a big market for Indian investment, goods, expertise, technology and services.&nbsp;

Conversely, over 29 South African companies have invested in different sectors of the Indian economy, accounting for $790 million.&nbsp;

The formation of the Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment and President Ramaphosa’s assurance to simplify and reform the South African business visa regime, will further strengthen bilateral trade and economic ties.&nbsp;

At a time when China has made huge investments in Africa and is trying to engage this continent in its Belt Road Initiative, India feels that expanding economic ties with South Africa and other African countries, would enable it to contain China’s growing clout. &nbsp;

Energy shortage is an important reason for India to aggressively pursue its foreign policy towards Africa. This continent has huge energy reserves, while India is an energy deficient country, importing 70 per cent of its oil needs.&nbsp;

Thus South Africa, which has a huge uranium reserve, can play an important role in providing sustained supply to help India’s nuclear plants.&nbsp;

Close ties will also enable the two sides to exert combined force for the reform of the Security Council, WTO, thereby making the global institutions reflect the reality of the present international scenario.

South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa’s R-Day visit puts India on African radar

Five people have been killed by a gas explosion in an unused coal mine in South Africa's eastern province of Mpumalanga and several others remain trapped, police said on Thursday.

State broadcaster SABC said about 20 people were still stuck underground at the mine in Middleburg.

Rescue efforts were hampered by dangerously high levels of toxic gas underground, SABC said.

The mine is owned by Tegeta Resources and Exploration, which is undergoing creditor protection after its owners, the Gupta brothers, found it difficult to continue doing business in South Africa following corruption allegations against them.

Several people had entered the mine on Wednesday afternoon to steal copper wires that supply electricity for lighting and ventilation when a gas pipe exploded, police spokesman Leonard Hlati said.

"The mine is wired with copper. They were going for copper," Hlati said.

Copper is often stolen from disused mines in South Africa and sold for scrap.

The Gupta brothers, their lawyers and officials from their firms and family representatives could not be reached for comment about the mine incident.

The brothers - who headed what was one of the country's biggest conglomerates - were accused of unduly influencing former president Jacob Zuma over political appointments and winning contracts.

Zuma and the Guptas deny any wrongdoing.

Babar Azam hit a majestic 90 but Pakistan's long streak of series wins came to an end in the second Twenty20 international against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium on Sunday.

South Africa took a winning 2-0 lead in the three-match series with a dramatic seven-run win. Pakistan had not lost a T20 series since they were eliminated from the World T20 in India in March 2016.

Pakistan were on track to overhaul South Africa's 188 for three until Azam was out off the first ball of the 17th over. It started a collapse in which six wickets fell for 34 runs in four overs.

The contrast between the two innings was stark. South Africa started slowly but stand-in captain David Miller plundered an unbeaten 65 off 29 balls as the hosts scored 127 runs off the last ten overs, including 29 off the final over bowled by Usman Shinwari.

Pakistan scored rapidly at the start of their innings, with Azam hitting the first three balls off Beuran Hendricks for four. It was 70 for one at the end of the six-over power play –- 26 runs ahead of South Africa's total at the same stage.

Azam and Hussain Talat (59) put on 102 off 75 balls for the second wicket.

"We had the game but we couldn't finish it," said Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik.

The tempo of the game changed when Azam pulled a slower ball from Beuran Hendricks to deep midwicket after hitting 13 fours and a six in a 58-ball innings.

"We didn't start too well with the ball," said Miller, who was named man of the match. "We were too short and too wide but the bowlers pulled it back."

Although neither took a wicket, Miller praised left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi and new fast bowler Lutho Sipamla for economical bowling in the middle overs before the late-innings collapse.

Miller, captaining South Africa for the first time because Faf du Plessis was rested for the last two matches of the series, hit five sixes and four fours in an explosive innings, which followed a similarly aggressive 45 off 27 balls by Rassie van der Dussen, who hit four sixes.

South Africa made a relatively sedate start on an unusually slow, dry Wanderers pitch. Left-arm spinner Imad Wasim, who opened the bowling, took one for nine in four overs. He bowled a maiden to new opening batsman Janneman Malan, who had an otherwise promising innings of 33 off 31 balls.

Left-arm fast bowler Shinwari conceded 63 runs off his four overs.

South Africa beat Pakistan by seven runs, win T20 series

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis picked hosts England and 2011 champions India as the title favourites for this year's Cricket World Cup and said his side will go into the tournament with lowered expectations, which could work to their advantage.

South Africa's World Cup adventures have often ended in unfortunate circumstances -- including falling foul of an unfair rain rule, misreading the Duckworth–Lewis run-rate requirement, or comical run outs at the death.

Four years ago they seemed to have one foot in the final until New Zealand pipped them in a thrilling semi-final by belting a six off the penultimate ball of the match.

Such results have led to South Africa being labelled 'chokers' at the 50-over event, and in turn has lowered their expectations for the 30 May to July 14 tournament.

"We will go with a little bit less pressure on us as a team in terms of the expectation of winning it," Du Plessis, who team are ranked fourth in the ODI standings, said on Tuesday.

"It is pretty clear that England and India are the two favourites.

"We are a young group and the guys are just excited about the opportunity."

However, Du Plessis is aware that South Africa will still have to deal with a lot of hype in the run-up and during the tournament as well as the narrative of their past failures.

"We have gone to tournaments in the past where we have felt like we had the strongest team on paper, but cricket is not played on paper," he said.

"When opponents look at us now, we are not the strongest team. But when a South Africa team goes to the World Cup, the chat in the media starts, even the opposition starts to chat!"

MENTAL CHALLENGE

Du Plessis believes managing the mental side will be key for his squad, which is expected to include 10 debutants.

"I remember going through the process of the previous World Cup (in 2015)," he said. "Going through the hurt of putting in so much time and energy into trying to win a trophy, and by the end you are absolutely shattered.

"Yes, all of us badly want to win a World Cup but for me as a captain, it is very important to make sure that players don’t try to be supermen to win.

"I have felt like we have been guilty of that in the past ... and that expectation can (put) a lot of weight on your shoulders.

"They just need to go there and be the best they can be."

The World Cup will be played in a round-robin format with all 10 nations pitted against each other in the first round and the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals.

South Africa open their campaign against England at The Oval on May 30.

South Asia Satellite helping better ties with neighbouring countries: PM Narendra Modi

India and South Africa have resolved to work together to address the issue of fugitive economic offenders through international organisations and institutions, said a joint statement released after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Cyril Ramaphosa held talks in Delhi on Friday.

Noting that terrorism is a serious threat to international peace, security and stability and that no country was immune to the danger that it represents, the two sides condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations regardless of its motivation, "whenever, wherever and by whosoever committed."

The two sides also noted the need for concerted action by the global community against terrorism through early agreement and adoption of the UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism, as well as the implementation of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in a balanced and integrated manner.

"They reiterated their commitment to working together on strengthening cooperation to address fugitive economic offenders, including through international organisations and institutions such as G20, Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and others," the statement said.

The two sides expressed satisfaction at the pace of cooperation in the defence sector encompassing a wide range of engagements including defence production, joint collaboration, manufacturing, research and development, training and joint exercises.

"The two sides also recognised the importance of increased bilateral naval cooperation and closer synergy within the context of Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) which, by keeping the sea lanes secure against illegal actors, will ensure unhindered passage for trade and continued prosperity of the entire Indian Ocean Region," the statement said.&nbsp;

India, South Africa to address issue of economic offenders through international organisations

Imam-ul-Haq hit a century -– and delivered a message to his critics -– but could not prevent South Africa from winning a rain-hit third one-day international at SuperSport Park on Friday.

Imam's 101 spurred Pakistan to an imposing 317 for six but South Africa won by 13 runs according to the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern method after rain twice stopped play during their reply.

When the second interruption brought the match to an end, South Africa were 187 for two after 33 overs, ahead of the DLS par of 174, with Reeza Hendricks and captain Faf du Plessis unbeaten on 83 and 40 respectively.

Imam had strong words for what he said were his critics after making his fifth century in his 19th one-day international.

As he took the single which took him to his hundred he pointed to his mouth as his lips moved vigorously, then put a finger to his lips.&nbsp;

He was out two balls later, caught in the deep.

Asked about his gesture in an interview with SuperSport television at the end of the innings, he laughed and said: "Everybody knows I am the nephew of the chief selector (Inzamam-ul-Haq) and that was a message to all the Pakistan media and all the Pakistan people who criticise me."

The left-handed Imam shared partnerships of 132 for the second wicket with Babar Azam (69) and 84 for the third wicket with Mohammad Hafeez (52).

His innings enabled Imam to reach 1,000 runs in one-day internationals in 19 innings, second fewest in all one-day internationals only to his teammate, Fakhar Zaman, who achieved the feat in 18 innings.

Imad Wasim finished the innings with a flourish with an unbeaten 43 off 23 balls, putting on 52 off 31 balls with Shoaib Malik (31) for the fifth wicket.

South Africa had a poor day in the field, dropping five catches, including lives to all five of the Pakistan top scorers.

There were 12 wides in the innings as South Africa needed more than 20 minutes more than the allotted time to bowl their 50 overs.

Andile Phehlukwayo and Tabraiz Shamsi, the two most successful bowlers in South Africa's win in the second match in Durban on Tuesday, conceded a combined 146 runs in 19 overs for the wicket of Imam, caught off Shamsi.

Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla gave South Africa a brisk start, putting on 53 for the first wicket. With a thunderstorm approaching, both were dismissed before the first rain delay at 88 for two after 16.5 overs.

Play resumed after a 55-minute break with the target remaining 318 in 50 overs.

Man of the match Hendricks and Du Plessis batted aggressively while the Pakistan bowlers and fielders struggled in damp conditions. More rain started to fall and eventually caused the match to be abandoned.

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said he believed Pakistan had made a "good score".&nbsp;

However, he refused to use the rain as an excuse for what he said was a disappointing bowling performance.&nbsp;

"They (South Africa) played very well," he said.

Du Plessis said: "We were below par with the ball. We were a bit flat. But the nice thing is we have guys who are putting their hands up. We want to see how guys perform under pressure."

PAKvsSA, 3rd ODI: Imam hundred in vain as South Africa win rain-hit match

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's visit comes when New Delhi is trying to increase its engagement with the continent where China has already made rapid strides. &nbsp;

It's the 11th time when an African leader has been called at India's Republic Day since 1950. In 1971, India invited the then President of Tanzania Julius Nyerere as the chief guest. Nyerere became the first African leader to be at the Republic Day event.&nbsp;

In 2002, India invited an African leader for the Republic Day. In 2002, the then President of Mauritius, Cassam Uteem, was invited by India as the chief guest at the Republic Day event.&nbsp;

Speaking on Africa day on January 18 in Gandhinagar during Vibrant Gujarat event, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said India has a partnership based on equality with the African continent, one that has a strong historical foundation.&nbsp;

"India has always shared a special bond with the people of Africa and supported their liberation from colonialism and from apartheid. We take pride in our model of cooperation with Africa which is demand-driven, consultative, participative, involves local resources, builds capacity and is based on Africa’s own prioritisation of its needs."&nbsp;

In the last 4 years, there have been 29 high-level&nbsp;visits to Africa from India. As many as 35 African leaders visited India in the last 4 years. The 3rd India Africa summit in 2015 was one of the biggest diplomatic engagements under the Modi government. The event saw the participation of 41 heads of state and governments.

New Delhi has already announced to open 18 new embassies and high commissions in Africa. Only last year, India opened its new mission in Rwanda - the current chair for the African Union. When it comes to trade ties, India is the 3rd largest export destination to the continent and 5th largest investor.&nbsp;

Every year on the occasion of the Republic Day, the Indian government leaves no stone unturned to highlight its achievements. India invites countries to showcase the ties it enjoys with them.&nbsp;

Last year, India invited all 10 heads of the ASEAN group for the Republic Day. During the first Republic Day under the Modi government, India invited the then US President Barack Obama, his French counterpart François Hollande. Then in 2017, UAE's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was the chief guest.&nbsp;

The neighbourhood at Republic Day

India has been inviting its neighbouring countries for its Republic Day celebrations. Bhutanese kings have visited New Delhi as the chief guest at Republic Day parade in 1954, 1984, 2005 and 2013. Afghanistan's King Mohammed Zahir Shah was the chief guest in 1967. Nepal's King Tribhuvan was the guest of honour in 1951 while King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev was the guest at the Republic Day parade in 1999. Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was invited for the same in 1991. Sri Lanka was the guest in 1974 and 1988. &nbsp;

Interestingly, Pakistan has been to India's Republic Day twice. In 1955, Governor General Malik Ghulam Muhammad was the guest at the very first Republic Day parade at Rajpath. In 1965, Pakistan's Food and Agriculture Minister Rana Abdul Hamid was the guest at the Republic Day. Both countries went to war later that year. &nbsp;

Even China has been invited to the event. In 1958, Marshall Ye Jianying was the chief guest at Republic Day event. Bangladesh has never been represented on the occasion.&nbsp;

World Powers at Republic day&nbsp;

Russia has been invited only once in 2007 with Russian President Vladimir Putin representing the country. The Soviet Union was invited 3 times - 1957, 1960, 1968. The United Kingdom and France are at a tie with both the countries being invited 5 times.&nbsp;

Ramaphosa will be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade to be held in Delhi on Saturday. &nbsp;

PM Modi personally handed over the invitation to him when he met him on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina in December 2018. Ramaphosa will be the eleventh African leader to be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade.

This comes at a time when India is increasing its engagement with Africa and celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

This is the second time when a South African President will be the chief guest at Republic Day. In 1995, the then President of South Africa Nelson Mandela was the chief guest.

The South African President is being accompanied by the First Lady Dr. Tshepo Motsepe, and a high-level delegation including nine ministers, senior officials of his government along with a 50-member business delegation.&nbsp;

Over 150 Indian companies have invested in South Africa, employing over 20,000 locals. The bilateral trade increased to $ 10.65 billion in 2018-19 from $ 9.38 billion in 2017-18. Both countries are members of UN, BRICS, G-20, Commonwealth, Indian-Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the IBSA (India, Brazil and South Africa).

PM Modi had visited South Africa from July 7-9 in 2016, he visited Pretoria, Johannesburg, Pietermaritzburg, and Durban. Former South African President Jacob Zuma had visited India twice in the last four years - first for the third India Africa summit in 2015 and later for the BRICS summit in Goa in 2016.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa began his two-day visit to India on Friday with a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhawan. Later in the day, he paid tribute at Raj Ghat - the Samadhi of the 'father of the nation' Mahatma Gandhi.
