Rhinoceros in South Africa are a big source of business for traders which makes rhino poaching a common practice in the region. But this practice also leaves many young rhinos as orphans. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announces large-scale reforms to combat energy crisis

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday announced plans and interventions to improve power supply and generate more power to the national grid.

The president held consultations with government, stakeholders, energy experts outside government to find a collective solution to the energy crisis.

"During the past three weeks, severe load shedding has disrupted all of our lives and caused immense damage to our economy.
The daily power cuts we have been experiencing have inconvenienced millions of households and have presented huge challenges for businesses," Ramaphosa said in a briefing late Monday.

He announced various interventions that the government has developed to respond to the crisis immediately.

Firstly, to improve the performance Eskom’s existing fleet of power stations.

Secondly, to accelerate the procurement of new generation capacity.

Thirdly, intention to massively increase private investment in generation capacity.

Fourthly, design to enable businesses and households to invest in rooftop solar.

Finally, fundamentally transforming the electricity sector and positioning it for future sustainability.

Ramaphosa said over the next 12 months, Eskom will increase its budget towards extensive maintenance of these power stations, adding that the redtape around procurement of maintenance spares and parts would be relaxed.

The long list of measures also include Eskom importing and purchasing excess power from neighbouring countries in the SADC region, hiring former plant managers who left the power utility, recruiting skilled personnel including former engineers and plant managers to drive Eskom forward, cutting red tape and buying power from private producers.

After years of state capture and mismanagement, a capable and effective management team is working hard to turn the utility around and reverse years of decay, Ramaphosa said.

However, he cautioned, as things stand, the country is still faced with an electricity shortage of up to 6,000 MW.

On Eskoms' huge debt of R400 billion, Ramaphosa said it continues to be a huge burden on Eskom’s ability to address its many challenges.

"The National Treasury is working to finalise a sustainable solution to Eskom’s debt. The Minister of Finance will outline how government will deal with this matter in an effective manner when he presents the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement in October," he said.

The measures announced by Ramaphosa, along with the steps taken thus far, are expected to stabilise energy security in the country and to help encourage investment in South Africa and create jobs.

South Africa’s third largest political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), on Thursday called for a vote of no confidence in parliament against President Cyril Ramaphosa and ultimately his impeachment.

“We are not seeking an ordinary motion of no confidence, we seek impeachment,” Party leader Julius Malema said, citing allegations of corruption stemming from the theft of cash in US dollars from Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm in Limpopo, Eskom’s rolling blackouts, high crime rate and high fuel prices.

"The EFF will approach all political parties in parliament, including the ANC, to engage on a motion of no confidence against Cyril Ramaphosa," Malema said, adding that he will also approach the courts to compel the South African Reserve Bank, the South African Revenue Services, the Financial Intelligence Centre and all relevant structures to demand Ramaphosa be held accountable for the Phala Phala farm scandal.

This comes after former State Security Agency boss Arthur Fraser opened a criminal case against the president alleging him of corruption, money laundering and kidnapping, claiming that Ramaphosa concealed a robbery in which millions of dollars were stolen from his Phala Phala farm in February 2020.

President Ramaphosa has, however, refuted these claims but confirmed that a robbery had taken place at his farm in Limpopo on February 9, 2020, in which proceeds from the sale of game were stolen, and that the incident had been reported to the head of the Presidential Protection Unit of the South African Police Service for investigation.

Malema did not shy from blaming President Rampahosa for the poor state of the country.

“The conditions of our people are getting worse, and all systems that guarantee the dignity of our people are crumbling. Since Ramaphosa assumed office as the President of South Africa, there is crisis after crisis and worse, the quality of life and livelihood for millions of our people are degenerating," he said.

National shutdown

Malema joined the chorus on the national shutdown stating that they want Ramaphosa to step down.

"The EFF will also form part of all progressive formations and organisations in South Africa to plan and engage in a national shutdown will will seek to remove Cyril Ramaphosa from office," Malema said

“The national shut down is to demand our country back from an incompetent, directionless and criminal syndicate that enjoys the protection of white monopoly capital,” he added.

Imagine living in a country, where you feel unwanted, and always in constant fear of being mobbed or attacked. That is the story of thousands of African immigrants living and working in other countries within the continent. Statements like 'go home', ' you don't belong here', 'let go of our jobs' are quite common nowadays. Concerns are now growing that xenophobia could be creeping back to the continent and taking several countries hostage. But what really made xenophobia so prevalent in the continent? Let's find out in this report.

World of Africa: Fears of Xenophobia loom in Africa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the Johannesburg high court judgment where he was being sued by mineworkers who worked for Lonmin during the Marikana massacre in 2012.

They wanted an apology and compensation from Ramaphosa as they believed that he was complicit in the events leading up to that day.

"The tragic events of August 2012 in Marikana that led to the death of 44 people remained one of the most distressing moments of the post 1994 democratic era and a blight on SA’s contemporary history. The violence and killings should have never happened," statement from the presidency said.

"10 years later our hearts still go out to families who lost their loved ones. The violence and the killings that occurred should have never happened. We are still resolute and united in our condemnation of the brutal acts we witnessed," it said.

However, the Presidency mentioned that, “Disturbingly, is the ongoing politicisation of this tragedy leading to the unfair targeting and isolate [and] allocation of responsibility to the president."

The workers (plantiff) had asked the court to find that Ramaphosa and Lonmin mine (now Sibanye-Stillwater), were liable for the actions of the police who brutally shot dead 34 workers in Marikana on August 16, 2012 during a violent strike.

The presidency said the court held that the plaintiffs' particulars of claim were legally flawed and four aspects of the judgment needed to be emphasised.

“First, the high court agreed with the president’s arguments and held that the plaintiffs had not established that the president bore any legal duty in relation to the Marikana tragedy.”

The court made no finding that Ramaphosa was the cause of harmful conduct. The proceedings were not a trial and no evidence was led. The court was merely engaged in a legal debate regarding whether the plaintiffs’ allegations complied with the law, it said.

Second, the court rejected the plaintiff’s argument that certain email communications from President Ramaphosa sought to call for the murder of the striking workers. The judgement stated that the plaintiffs’ argument against the President “is not only far-fetched but also irreconcilable within the context of the email communication contents as a whole," the statement said.

Third, the high court agreed with Ramaphosa that there was no factual basis pleaded for the allegation that collusion between him, government and the senior police officers would have led to deaths of workers.

Fourth, on the allegations that the President Ramaphosa owed a duty of care to the plaintiffs due to his role as director of Lonmin, the High Court agreed with the President that the allegation was incorrect as a matter of law.

"In the judgment the court said, the allegations pleaded do not show that the first defendant owed the plaintiffs legal duties, and he therefore cannot in law incur liability to the plaintiffs in delict in his capacity as director of Lonmin, or ‘in pursuit of his personal interests and those of Lonmin’.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the Johannesburg high court judgment where he was being sued by mineworkers who worked for Lonmin during the Marikana massacre in 2012.

However, the Presidency mentioned that, “Disturbingly, is the ongoing politicisation of this tragedy leading to the unfair targeting and isolate [and] allocation of responsibility to the president." The workers (plantiff) had asked the court to find that Ramaphosa and Lonmin mine (now Sibanye-Stillwater), were liable for the actions of the police who brutally shot dead 34 workers in Marikana on August 16, 2012 during a violent strike. The presidency said the court held that the plaintiffs' particulars of claim were legally flawed and four aspects of the judgment needed to be emphasised. “First, the high court agreed with the president’s arguments and held that the plaintiffs had not established that the president bore any legal duty in relation to the Marikana tragedy.” The court made no finding that Ramaphosa was the cause of harmful conduct. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomes judgement on Marikana massacre

South African chemical engineer Wendy Vesela has found ways of turning the spiky green and black caterpillars -- which are packed with protein and iron -- into flour that can be used in savoury biscuits, and sweet chocolate protein bars, cereals or smoothies. He wants to change the way edible caterpillars, popularly known as "mopane worms" are viewed and eaten.

For many people, particularly from western European backgrounds, the idea of eating insects is still riddled with fear and inhibition. But they can be a valuable source of nutrition and farming them is not detrimental to the environment. When steamed and sliced, mopane pieces can also be used as pizza toppings.

Vesela says she has found domestic and international customers for her organic products. Edible insects and worms may indeed be gaining popularity in Western cultures. But food anthropologist Anna Trapido insists that the trend should not be seen as just another dietary fad, a "kind of adventure tourism, where you get a badge" for eating them.

"Mopane needs to be treated with respect because they are part of people's emotional, spiritual, culinary genres," she said.

Vesela tried to woo reluctant customers with biscuits and protein bars at a recent food fair in Johannesburg's upmarket Sandton district, as reported by AFP.

"I won't eat a worm. I'm sorry, it's disgusting. But if you give it to me in the form of chocolate... it's really delicious," said Gail Odendaal, 38, walking away with a bag of protein bars.

Mopanes are environmentally friendly, too, requiring no extra water or land, as they breed and feed on mopane trees, which grow in hot and dry regions of southern Africa.

They are a better source of protein than many other foods on the market, said dietitian, Mpho Tshukudu.

21 die in South African township club, reasons unclear

Police in South Africa continues to try and make sense of the mysterious tragedy that claimed the lives of 21 teenagers in the southern city of East London. As per an AFP report, survivors have described the incident as a battle to escape jam-packed tavern premises, after a suffocating smell was detected. Of the 21 victims, 17 perished inside the bar while four died in the hospital. Another 31 as per officials had to be hospitalised with symptoms including vomiting, headache, backache and tightness in the chest. At first, it was assumed to be a tragic example of underage drinking gone wrong, but on Monday, more information came to light as survivors described a suffocating 'pepper spray' like the smell inside the crammed double-story structure.

In South Africa, the drinking age is 18, but safety restrictions and drinking-age requirements are not always enforced by township bars, which are frequently situated next to family homes.

To determine whether the fatalities could be related to poisoning, autopsies are being performed. A forensic analysis will be conducted this week.

Unathi Binqose, a government official in charge of safety, said that samples had been obtained and were on the first aircraft out today to Cape Town, where the tests will be carried out.
