South Africa is one of the most unsafe countries in the world and the numbers are proving just that. The recent statistics from the country's police authority revealed that the murder rate in the country increased by 11.5% in the first quarter of 2022 compared with the same period last year. But what's more worrying is that women are the most vulnerable target.

Thousands of people gathered at the Zulu royal palace in South Africa on Saturday for the coronation of a new king in the country's richest and most influential traditional monarchy.

Misuzulu Zulu, 47, is set to succeed his father, Goodwill Zwelithini, who died in March last year after 50 years in charge but a bitter succession dispute threatens to overshadow the ceremony.

Although the title of king does not bestow any executive power, the monarchs wield great moral influence over more than 11 million Zulus, who make up nearly a fifth of South Africa's population.

Men and women in colourful traditional outfits assembled outside the marble palace on the hills of Nongoma, a small town in the southeastern province of KwaZulu-Natal, the Zulu heartland.

Tens of thousands more were expected to arrive throughout the day to honour the new sovereign.

"Today, the king will be acknowledged by the whole Zulu Nation," Misuzulu's sister, Princess Ntandoyesizwe Zulu, 46, told AFP.

Yet, an acrimonious family dispute over the throne raged.

On Saturday, a court in Pietermaritzburg was to hear an urgent application by a branch of the royal family to block all ceremonies.

Coronation rites

In Nongoma, lines of Zulu warriors known as amaButhos holding spears and shields of animal skin, marched into the palace grounds.

Women — some bare-chested, others in pleated skirts and beaded belts or draped with fabrics bearing the effigy of the sovereign — sang and danced.

On Friday night, Misuzulu entered the palace's "cattle kraal" where he took part in a secret rite designed to present the new monarch to his ancestors.

Only select members of the royal family and amaButhos were allowed in the enclosure which is protected from curious eyes by a thick fence of tree trunks.

"It's a holy place, we can't reveal to the world what is happening there," said Muntomuhle Mcambi, 34, an amaButho.

Earlier this week, the soon-to-be king also killed a lion at a nearby reserve — in one of the last steps before the coronation.

Family spat

His path to the crown has not been smooth. King Zwelithini left six wives and at least 28 children when he died last year.

Misuzulu is the first son of Zwelithini's third wife, who he designated as regent in his will.

But the queen died suddenly a month later, leaving a will naming Misuzulu as the next king — a development that did not go down well with other branches of the family.

Queen Sibongile Dlamini, the late king's first wife, has backed her son Prince Simakade Zulu as the rightful heir.

Some of the late king's brothers have put forward a third prince as their candidate for the throne.

Queen Sibongile's legal bid to challenge the succession was revived Friday as she was granted the right to appeal a previous unfavourable ruling.

On Saturday, two of her daughters filed an urgent application to stop all rituals pending the appeal.

"Those who are Zulu and know the traditions, know who is the king," said Themba Fakazi, an adviser to the previous ruler who supports Misuzulu.

The next Zulu monarch will inherit a fortune and tap into a rich seam of income.

Zwelithini received some 71 million rand ($4.2 million) a year from the government and owned several palaces and other properties.

A royal trust manages almost three million hectares (7.4 million acres) of land — an area about the size of Belgium.

South Africa skittled England out for 149 on Friday to win the first test by an innings and 12 runs inside three days at Lord's and go 1-0 up in the three-match series.

It proved an emphatic triumph for South Africa's bowling attack, who nullified the threat of England's new attacking batting 'Bazball' approach, forging a 161-run first innings lead before dismissing their hosts in only 37.4 second innings overs.

Anrich Nortje took three wickets in the space of 10 balls to rip through the heart of the home batting, removing Jonny Bairstow (18 runs), opener Alex Lees (35) and Ben Foakes (0) in quick succession with a spell of fast bowling for figures of 3-47.

He was ably backed up by fellow quicks Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada while spinner Keshav Maharaj proved a surprisingly successfully early inclusion into the attack, taking the first two wickets before lunch with Zak Crawley (13) and Ollie Pope (5) both trapped leg before wicket.

It was another failure for under-pressure Crawley, who was the first to fall for 13 runs and faces being dropped for the next test at Old Trafford.

Joe Root was the first to go after lunch as he edged Ngidi to slip for six runs followed by Nortje’s quick trio of scalps as South Africa took a firm grip on the game.

But England captain Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad took on the bowlers in a ‘Bazball’ cameo to score 55 runs off 45 runs for the seventh wicket to offer hopes of a home fightback before Broad was snagged by Rabada for a quickfire 35.

Jansen then castled Matthew Potts for a single run before Stokes (20) hit Rabada down the throat of Maharaj on the boundary to end home hopes.

Rabada's seven wickets in the test saw him named man of the match.

Captain Dean Elgar said the bowlers had to put the ball in the right areas and "the guys did a great job".

"It was disappointing to lose but South Africa were just better than us, but I don't want to look too much into it," added Stokes.

South Africa had begun the day on 289-7 in response to England's first innings tally of 165 and batted for the first hour on Friday before being bowled out for 326 in their first innings, giving them a handy 161-run lead.

Nortje scored an unbeaten 28 not out off 42 balls as he dominated a 29-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Marco Jansen, who was dismissed for 48.

Rabada was out third ball of the day as he pulled the ball leg side, only for Broad to pluck it one-handed out of the air for a brilliant catch.

South Africa's largest ethnic group, the Zulus, will on Saturday crown a new king following a year of feuding over who should ascend to the throne of the country's most influential traditional monarchy.

On Saturday, Misuzulu will enter the "cattle kraal" at the Zulu royal residence or KwaKhethomthandayo in Nongoma, a small town in the ethnic group's southeastern heartland province of KwaZulu-Natal.

There, he will take part in a secret rite designed to present the new monarch to his legendary ancestors.

Afterwards, he will be introduced to his people, who will pledge to "accept the king as their king", said Gugulethu Mazibuko, an expert in African cultures at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Only selected members of the royal family and Zulu warriors, known as amaButhos, are allowed to witness the kraal rite up close, but large crowds are expected to gather at the royal palace to celebrate the event.

Royal feud

Zulu kings are descendants of King Shaka, the 19th-century leader still revered for having united a large swathe of the country as the Zulu nation, which fought bloody battles against the British colonisers.

The new monarch's first name means "strengthening the Zulus." Yet his path to the crown has been the subject of an acrimonious family dispute.

She left a will that designated Misuzulu to ascend to the throne -- a development that did not go down well with other branches of the family.

After a failed legal bid to challenge the succession, Prince Simakade Zulu, the son of the late king's first wife, surrounded by a small group of people, underwent the cattle kraal rite last weekend, in a last-ditch move thwart Misuzulu's coronation.

And at a sombre press briefing held in Johannesburg's northern suburb of Fourways on Thursday, some of the late king's brothers disowned both heir-apparents and put forward a third prince as their candidate for the throne.

The next Zulu monarch will inherit a fortune and tap into a rich seam of income.

Zwelithini enjoyed the trappings of his royal status, receiving some 71 million rand ($4.2 million) a year from the government to run royal affairs and fund a lavish lifestyle.

He owned several palaces and other properties, with a royal trust managing almost three million hectares (7.4 million acres) of land -- an area about the size of Belgium.

In exchange the king serves as guarantor of social peace, said Sihawukele Ngubane, a specialist at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

"He caters for the welfare of his subjects," she said, explaining royals are in charge of community and infrastructure development on the land managed by the trust.

In a first, a South African citizen with a rare neurological disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome died after getting inoculated with Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine.

A causal link has been established between the patient's death and the vaccine according to South Africa's health regulator.

Professor Hannelie Meyer told news agency Reuters that "At the time of illness no other cause for the Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) could be identified."

Highlighting that GBS can be triggered by SARS-CoV-2, J&J said it was associated with the administration of various vaccines.

In the first six months of the year, South Africa saw a rise in Rhino poaching, a total of 259 Rhinos were poached for their horn.

Between January and June 2022, 259 rhinos were poached as compared with 249 countrywide in the same period last year. About 82 rhinos were poached in Kruger National Park alone.

“Recent trends in rhino poaching show a move away from the Kruger Park to private reserves and KwaZulu-Natal where the majority of rhinos have been killed this year. This makes it all the more important for the national government to shift its focus to supporting provincial authorities and private reserves in the war on rhino poaching” said the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Barbara Creecy.

Poaching statistics 2022 show a loss of 210 rhinos on state properties and 49 in privately-owned parks. As indicated, the hardest hit during this period is KwaZulu-Natal which recorded a loss of 133 rhinos. This is more than triple the 33 rhinos killed in the first six months of the year.

"The demand for rhino horn remains a constant threat to our rhino populations as crime syndicates continue to operate within our borders. The number of successful arrests and prosecutions recorded over the past 6 months, can be attributed to the continued successful collaboration between the law enforcement agencies, including the SAPS, DPCI and the Green Scorpions, Customs officials, and the National Prosecuting Authority. These efforts are supported by private security," Creecy said.

Partnerships between the public and private sectors remain key to combating wildlife trafficking. In addition to work being undertaken within the seven Integrated Wildlife Zones, the partnership now includes both the financial and transport sectors, as well as transit and end-user countries in Southeast Asia, especially with the People’s Republic of China, Malaysia, and Vietnam, the Minister said.

Between January and June, 69 people were arrested in connection with rhino poaching and rhino horn trafficking. Of these, 13 alleged poachers were arrested in the Kruger National Park, the statement from the ministry indicated.

× "The demand for rhino horn remains a constant threat to our rhino populations as crime syndicates continue to operate within our borders. Watch WION's live TV here: ×

South Africa: Over 80 men accused of raping 8 women appear in court amid protests

Memories of Nelson Mandela, the legendary anti-apartheid activist who served as South Africa's President from 1994 to 1999, are held in deep respect in the country. The fighter who spent 27 years of his life fighting for the rights of the non-white Africans breathed his last on December 13, 2013.

Mandela is known for his activism and his decades-long fight to end Apartheid in South Africa, and is also remembered for his sense of humour. Madiba, as he was fondly called, often poked fun, and even made self-deprecating jokes just to make others around him comfortable. But his jokes were indirect and statesman-like.

Mandela was awarded US Congressional Gold Medal in the year 1999. In his acceptance speech in the US Congress, he expressed one regret of his life, failing to become world heavyweight boxing champion!

"There is one regret I have had throughout my life: that I never became the heavyweight boxing champion of the world. I would like my friend Evander Holyfield to know that today I feel like the heavyweight boxing champion of the world," he said to thunderous laughter of US lawmakers.

Evander Holyfield is the boxer whose ear was famously chomped off by Mike Tyson. The infamous match had taken place just three years before. Holyfield was heavyweight champion in early 90s.

'Hello Elizabeth'

Perhaps it took stature of Nelson Mandela to get away with regarding Queen of England as "Elizabeth". Mandela always spoke with the queen using her first name. He of course respected her. The queen, in turn, regarded him as 'Nelson'.

Mandela himself was born in the royal family of his tribe.

As per former British PM Gordon Brown's 2013 parliament speech, Mandela wanted a certain person from his tribe to get invited to Buckingham Palace. After trying diplomatic channels he decided to phone the queen directly.

His first words to Queen of England during the call reportedly were,"Hello Elizabeth, how's the Duke?". While the official records said the queen was non-committal in her assurances, Mandela got his way in the end.

Nelson Mandela: The legend and his humour

The African National Congress (ANC) has reaffirmed South Africans that the party is very serious about tackling corruption and winning back the hearts of its supporters.

On the final day of the ANC's policy conference in Johannesburg, its president Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the party has decided to retain its step aside rule for those who are charged with corruption and other crimes.

"The overwhelming view of policy conference is for the retention of the step-aside provisions to enhance the integrity of the movement and its leadership," he said.

"Conference noted strong concerns on the perceived lack of consistency in the application and implementation of the policy. Conference agreed that these must receive urgent attention so that the application of the guidelines is impartial, fair and consistent," Ramaphosa said while addressing delegates on the final day of the policy conference.

Some of the ANC members demanded for the step-aside rule to be scrapped, arguing that this was used to fight factional battles, but it did not get the voice and support it wanted in the conference.

ANC secretary general Ace Magashule was forced to step aside last year after he was charged of corruption, money laundering and fraud related to the asbestos project during his time as premier in the Free State province.

Ramaphosa is also currently facing investigation on the $4 million that was stolen from his Phala Phala farm in June 2020.

"Delegates have affirmed the ANC approach to the report of the State Capture Commission, and have urged that the findings and recommendations of the report form the basis of a society-wide effort to tackle corruption in all its forms," the party President said.

Over the last three days, ANC has developed a series of policy proposals on how to achieve its revolutionary objectives.

"Some existing policies we have affirmed, some we have refined and some we have changed. These policy proposals will now go to the structures of our movement for further debate before being placed before our 55th National Conference for consideration and adoption," Ramaphosa said.

"This policy conference gives us hope for the future of our movement. It has sent a clear signal to our members, our supporters and the people of this country that, whatever our challenges, whatever our shortcomings, the ANC is alive," he added.

South Africa: ANC retains rule making stepping down mandatory for corruption-charged officials

South Africa’s governing party, the African National Congress leader Cyril Ramaphosa has warned his party members that factions within the organisation have left the ANC at its weakest.

“The ANC is today at its weakest and its most vulnerable since the advent of democracy... The divisions amongst us have also severely weakened our organisation,” Ramaphosa said while speaking at the party’s sixth national policy conference at Nasrec, Johannesburg on Friday.

ANC’s weaknesses were driven by the competition for positions, the contestation of structures, and the pursuit of access to public resources, he added.

“Our weaknesses are evident in the distrust, disillusionment, and frustration that is expressed by many people towards our movement and our government. They are reflected in our support in the local government elections in November last year, where for the first time, we fell below 50 per cent of the national vote,” he said.

He also stressed that after this policy conference the party must emerge united and chalk out all the differences.

“We will come out of here with clear policies, a coherent position because we are the African National Congress...this conference needs to send a clear and positive message about our determination to address the challenges that face our people and our country. The national democratic revolution currently faces a number of challenges and perils. Our movement, the ANC has been weakened on a number of fronts,” Ramaphosa said.

The conference, which ends on Sunday, serves as an opportunity to make self-introspection, assess the strengths and weaknesses of the policies ANC has adopted in the previous conference, and re-imagine better strategies that work for the party and more for the country.

It’s now or never for the ANC to try win back the hearts of its supporters.

“From this gathering, we need to send out a clear message of intent from our movement. A clear message that we are committed to the renewal and revitalisation of the African National Congress,” he said.

Amongst many issues, the conference is expected to address graft allegations against ANC members, those that have been implicated by the state capture commission. At least 200 ANC members are on the list, including senior officials.

“The commission finalised its work last month, and the government has embarked on a process to consider all the commission’s findings and recommendations. As the ANC, we have consistently maintained that the commission is a necessary part of the broader social effort to end all forms of state capture and corruption. We are therefore engaging with the findings and recommendations of the commission to determine how these can help to enhance the process of fundamental renewal and rebuilding within our movement,” the president said.

He also said that the ANC needs to replenish itself, drawing more young people into its ranks and into its leadership structures.

“The revival of the ANC Youth League is critical for our movement. We must have a cohort of young people to take over leadership of the movement and country,” Ramaphosa said.

South Africa: Gang of gun men force their way into music video shoot, rape 8 young women

A recent report revealed that more than 70 percent of all Malawians believe in witchcraft with over 80 percent among the relatively rich and the well-educated. The practice has seen innocent older people torched to death for being accused of practicing the vice. The Southern African nation is grappling with the spate of witchcraft violence.
