South Africa's ANC meet over 'Farmgate Scandal'; President's allies rally behind him

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is facing tremendous pressure since a probe into the farmgate scandal found evidence of alleged serious misconduct over a large amount of cash being stolen from his game farm, after cash amounting to hundreds of thousands was reported to have been stashed in the sofa cushions of his residence. The president’s attempt to refute the charges backfired when he claimed that the cash amount was in fact proceeds from the sale of buffaloes at his farm.

There were reports that Ramaphosa was inclined to announce his resignation over the scandal even as he strongly denies all charges but the South Africa's presidential spokesperson said that President is still processing the independent panel report and will make an ‘announcement’ at the right time.

"The President appreciates the urgency of this issue. The President appreciates the enormity of this issue, what it means for the country, the stability of the country and government, and as a result of that he is still processing the report," Vincent Magwenya, Presidential Spokesperson said in a media briefing.

"Ramaphosa is also engaging with number of role players and stakeholders across the governing party, different levels of the governing party, its alliance partners. He is engaging broad range of stakeholders," Magwenya added.

The panel was appointed by the speaker of the National Assembly to investigate whether there was any evidence of wrongdoing on President Cyril Ramaphosa's part in the Phala Phala saga.

Farmgate scandal: Ramaphosa’s future hangs in uncertainty, ‘announcement’ soon, says aide

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa faced calls to step down after a parliamentary panel's probe found he may have breached anti-corruption laws in connection with the alleged theft of a large amount of money from his Phala Phala game farm.

WION Dispatch: South African opposition seeks President Cyril Ramaphosa's resignation

‘Farmgate’ Corruption Scandal | South Africa: Ruling party in a huddle

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is in trouble, as he will possibly face formal impeachment over the 'Farmgate scandal.' It all started on 1 June 2022, when Arthur Fraser, a former head of the State Security Agency and close ally of former president Jacob Zuma, filed a criminal complaint against Ramaphosa. According to Fraser's complaint, Ramaphosa stashed a sum of $4 million inside a couch at his home at the Phala Phala game farm in Waterberg, Limpopo. The report stated that the president deliberately did not report the crime and was trying to hide the existence of this huge sum of undeclared foreign currency. However, the president while rubbishing the complaint said that the money was from selling buffaloes.

What does the complaint say?

A leaked report from an independent panel reveals that President Ramaphosa has abused his position. It also states that Ramaphosa may have breached the anti-corruption law. In addition to the cover-up of $4 million, the president is also accused of kidnapping and bribing the burglars to remain silent. Fraser has also alleged that the money which the president claims to have earned by selling buffaloes could have been money-laundering and corruption proceeds. According to African media outlet, holding this amount of money in dollars could violate foreign exchange control laws.

Impeachment ahead for Cyril Ramaphosa?

The findings drawn by the panels are passed on to the Parliament. Now , the parliament will examine the findings and decide it must launch impeachment proceedings the coming week. Moreover, a conference is also awaiting Ramaphosa which will see if he can run for a second term with his party, the African National Congress (ANC) in 2024. It is also expected that the ANC could raise the issue in a meeting with its executive on Thursday.

What did Ramaphosa say to the panel report?

Ramaphosa firstly confirmed that a robbery had taken place at his place however, in the same breath, said that the stolen money was less than that alleged. He also refuted the complaint which says that he attempted to cover up the robbery. He said that some $580,000 which had been paid in cash for buffalo was stolen from under sofa cushions from his farmhouse. "I did not 'hunt' for the perpetrators of the theft, as alleged, nor did I give any instructions for this to take place," his written submission to the panel report said, as per AFP news agency.

As per the panel there are many questions that are left unanswered by President Cyril Ramaphosa. They termed the matter a "very serious" one. The panel suggested that very less information was available about the man who allegedly paid the money for buffalo. It added that the man to whom the buffaloes were sold has still not collected the animals, two and a half years later. It also raised suspicions over the money kept hidden in a sofa rather than in a safe.

The United States on Monday targetted member of Islamic State cell with sanctions. The cell is operating in South Africa. The sanctions have been imposed on the individuals as well as companies they control.

US Treasury Department said that the aim of the action was to choke off support for the network and control their expansion in the region.

"Today, Treasury is targeting key individuals in ISIS's network in South Africa, as well as their business assets, who have played pivotal roles in enabling terrorism and other criminal activities in the region," said Brian E. Nelson, Treasury's top terrorist finance watchdog.

The sanctions blacklisted four individuals and eight companies. Their assets in US, if any, were frozen. The sanctions deny these individuals and companies ability to use the US financial system.

"The United States, as part of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, will continue to partner with South Africa to deny ISIS the ability to exploit the country’s economy to raise and move funds to support the growth of ISIS affiliates and networks," Nelson said in a statement.

The sanctions target members of the Durban, South Africa-based ISIS cell led by Farhad Hoomer, who was previously targeted by sanctions. They are brothers Nufael Akbar and Yunus Mohamad Akbar, as well as Mohamad Akbar and Umar Akbar.

The companies hit with sanctions are MA Gold Traders (PTY) LTD, Bailey Holdings (PTY) LTD, Flexoseal Waterproofing Solutions (PTY) LTD, HJ Bannister Construction CC, Sultans Construction CC, Ashiq Jewellers CC, Ineos Trading (PTY) LTD, and Shaahista Shoes

The companies hit with sanctions are MA Gold Traders (PTY) LTD, Bailey Holdings (PTY) LTD, Flexoseal Waterproofing Solutions (PTY) LTD, HJ Bannister Construction CC, Sultans Construction CC, Ashiq Jewellers CC, Ineos Trading (PTY) LTD, and Shaahista Shoes (With inputs from agencies) You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Netherlands staged a massive upset in the ongoing T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday after defeating South Africa in their last Super-12 encounter, ensuring India a place in the semi-finals.

The South African batters choked and failed to chase a moderate score of 159 runs as the Dutch bowlers restricted them to 145/8 in their 20 overs.

Brandon Glover starred with the ball for the Netherlands as the pacer claimed three wickets in his two overs.

The clash between Pakistan and Bangladesh has now become a virtual quarterfinal as the winner of the clash will join India in the semi-finals from group two.

Chasing the target, South African openers Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock got off to a quick start with de Kock smashing a four in the first over, following it with a six in the second over.

Netherland pacer Fred Klaassen dismissed de Kock in the third over to draw first blood for the team.

The Dutch team's potent pacer Paul van Meekeren removed the SA captain in the sixth over sending both the openers back to the pavilion.

Rilee Rossouw did play some attacking shots in his brief stay but was dismissed for 25(19) by Glover in the 10th over, reducing South Africa to 68/3 at the end of 10 overs.

Proteas batter Aiden Markram was dismissed by Fred Klaassen in the 13th over even as he looked in fine touch and was stitching an important partnership with David Miller.

In the 16th over, Glover dismissed Miller to dent the Proteas' chances of winning the match and advancing into the semi-finals. Bas de Leede got rid of Heinrich Klaasen in the 18th over, the only recognised batter at the crease to knock on the door of victory.

After Klaasen's wicket, it was mere formality for the Dutch team as the South African team needed 36 runs off the last two overs with no recognised batter at the crease and a limping Keshav Maharaj batting alongside Kagiso Rabada.

The Netherlands gave away just 12 runs in the last over to secure a 13-run victory, their first-ever on South Africa.

Earlier, a late flourish from Colin Ackermann and Tom Cooper helped the Netherlands reach a total of 158/4 against South Africa in its last Super-12 encounter at the Adelaide Oval in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Ackermann top-scored for the Dutch with an explosive unbeaten 41 from 26 balls. Experienced Tom Cooper also made a vital contribution of 35 runs from 19 balls. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj took two wickets for the Proteas.

The openers struck a total of eight elegant boundaries in the first six overs taking their team to 48 runs without loss at the end of the powerplay, making it their best powerplay score in this tournament.

Just when the Netherlands looked on the path to getting to a good score, Aiden Markram dismissed Myburgh in the ninth over to give his team the first breakthrough.

Right-hander Cooper attacked the bowlers from the word go and smacked a six early in his inning. The aggression rubbed off on O'Dowd and he too slammed a six seeing his partner go after the bowlers. The Dutch team finished at 70/1 at the end of 10 overs.

Left-arm finger spinner Maharaj was hit for a six in the 13th over but scalped the wicket of O'Dowd to bring Ackermann to the crease. The bowler also dismissed Cooper in the 15th over to bring two new batters to the crease for the last five overs.

Pacer Anrich Nortje sent back Bas de Leede in the 18th over, ending his scratchy inning where inn he scored just one run off seven balls.

Thanks to Ackermann's late blitz, the Netherlands managed to score 31 runs off the last two overs helping the team reach 158/4 in 20 overs.

On Thursday, state prosecutors in South Africa acquitted a group of 14 men who were accused of gang raping and robbing female members of a film crew earlier this year. The verdict sparked outrage among women’s rights groups who have criticised the local police for their perceived failures, said a report by Associated Press.

The incident reportedly took place back in July, in an abandoned mine in Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg when men who are believed to be illegal miners were arrested by the police after they allegedly attacked and raped at least eight women who were filming a music video.

South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) told AP that rape and robbery charges have been withdrawn due to “insufficient evidence”, as DNA results could not link any of the men to the rapes. However, the 14 men accused will now only face charges related to immigration offences as they may have entered South Africa illegally, said the report.

The country’s Commission for Gender Equality has called on the local police to relaunch the investigation. “We are completely outraged at these latest developments, which means the police have no idea who committed this crime,” said the women’s rights commission spokesperson, Javu Baloyi. He added, “They arrested the wrong people, so the real criminals are still out there.”

When the incident first came to light, it sparked violent protests in townships around Krugersdorp, as the community had accused small-scale miners of committing crimes while working in abandoned mine shafts. Protesters had also taken to these mines and blocked the holes used by these miners, burnt their tents and belongings after they also detained, assaulted and then handed them over to the local police.

According to the report, at least 80 men were initially detained but the charges were ultimately held against these 14 men. Another rights group Sisonke organisation has also called for the police to act and staged a demonstration outside the court during the suspects’ appearance.
