Scripting history, India won the inaugural Women’s U19 T20 World Cup on Sunday, battering England by seven wickets. In a sense, it was a déjà vu for Indian cricketing fans as MS Dhoni and his bunch of mavericks had also won the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa 15 summers ago in 2007.

Bowling first at Senwes Park, Indian bowlers had their radar right from the word go. Titas Ranadeep Sadhu struck in the first over, sending Liberty Heap back to the pavilion, after gulping a skier that came her way. Off-spinner Archana Devi backed up the good start with a double-wicket, sending opposition skipper Scrivens and Fiona Holland in the same over. Indian fielders rose to the occasion as runouts and stumpings made sure that the English side never got any whiff of recovery. "We were planning that we will get a good start (with the ball), we thought we will enjoy the three hours and that's the only plan." This wasn't the first instance where English batting had failed in a crunch game. In the semifinal against Australia, England were left tottering at 45/7 before lower-order contributions took them to 99 which was defended heroically by the bowlers. However, the three lioness bowlers were not able to repeat a similar feat as the Indian batters proved too brute and calculated in their approach. Jofra Archer is poised to make an eagerly-anticipated England comeback in the new year after being named Thursday in a 14-strong squad for a three-match one-day international series in South Africa.

Sussex fast bowler Archer made a dramatic entry onto the international stage in 2019 when he became one of the stars of England's 50-over World Cup triumph.

But he has not played international cricket since March 2021 due to injury.

The 27-year-old Barbados-born quick suffered several elbow problems, which led to two operations, before his hopes of a return to action were dashed by a stress fracture of the lower back in May that ruled him out of the 2022 English season.

Archer, however, played for the second-string England Lions in a warm-up match against the Test side in Abu Dhabi last month ahead of the senior team's 3-0 whitewash of Pakistan.

Just six balls into the practice match, Archer hit Zak Crawley on the helmet with a bouncer.

An England and Wales Cricket Board statement issued Thursday said Archer was "recovering well from an elbow injury and is expected to return to international cricket in South Africa next month".

Brook set for ODI debut

Meanwhile, rising star Harry Brook, fresh from three superb Test hundreds in Pakistan and England's T20 World Cup win in Australia, has been called into an ODI squad for the first time.

The 23-year-old Yorkshireman has been a mainstay during an already busy England tour programme but team management have decided against resting him ahead of a Test series in New Zealand in February.

Outstanding batsman Joe Root and express fast bowler Mark Wood have though been left out, though, as England look to manage the workloads of their multi-format players.

Opener Ben Duckett, who played the last of his three ODIs in 2016, has been recalled to the 50-over set-up after regaining his England place at T20 and Test level in recent months.

Left-arm quick Reece Topley, unluckily ruled out of the T20 World Cup campaign after tripping on a boundary sponge, has also been included in a squad that will again be led by white-ball captain Jos Buttler.

But all-rounder Liam Livingstone has been ruled out with the knee injury he suffered on Test debut against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.

The three-match contest in South Africa is a rearranged series that was initially abandoned in December 2020 after a Covid-19 scare prompted England to fly home early.

It will be played over six days, with two fixtures in Bloemfontein starting on January 27 before the final game takes place in Kimberley on February 1.

Brook set for ODI debut Meanwhile, rising star Harry Brook, fresh from three superb Test hundreds in Pakistan and England's T20 World Cup win in Australia, has been called into an ODI squad for the first time. Among the dead include a teenager as the North Beach was closed off after the incident and an investigation has been launched. The incident happened around 5 pm on Sunday at the Bay of Plenty, one of the popular beaches in South Africa.

Local emergency medical services said that those who died were swept out to sea by currents and drowned.

“The details of the incidents are still sketchy at this point, however, it is believed that a freak wave put many people into distress while swimming and they tragically drowned,” the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government said in a statement on Facebook.

According to local reports, at least 17 people have been hospitalised and were said to be in serious or critical condition.

The EThekwini Municipality in its Facebook post said that over 35 lifeguards were dispatched in rescue efforts, attending to more than 100 people affected by the massive wave.

Nomusa Dube-Ncube, the head of the provincial government, termed it a “terrible tragedy” and urged “all authorities and operators manning the beaches and sea areas to ensure adequate and preventive safety measure are in place to avoid any further loss of life.”

She also asked visitors to follow safety advice when visiting, and to assess unpredictable weather before heading to the beach or the sea.

Durban is one of the popular destinations for South African, and usually attracts huge footfall, including foreigners, with beaches during the holiday season.

‘Freak wave’ in South Africa’s Durban kills 3, injures over a dozen

ANC presidential elections are getting tighter in South Africa. The country is witnessing a tussle between incumbent president Ramophosa and former health minister Zweli Mkhize. Watch further to know more.

Race to win the ANC elections is getting tighter in South Africa

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was re-elected as the leader of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party on Monday. The veteran politician, who has been facing a number of corruption scandals recently, defeated his rival – former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize – by 2476 votes to 1897.

Ramaphosa was the odds-on favourite to win the party elections with the ANC putting their complete support behind him when it comes to the corruption scandals. However, a lot of experts were surprised by the number of votes that Mkhize got as he was also hit by a major scandal regarding the Covid funds.

While both factions inside the ANC made it clear that there were no instances of vote-buying, it was alleged that Mkhize promised high positions to key members in order to boost his cause.

The ANC, a party that counted Nelson Mandela as its member, has been in power in South Africa since 1994 and they will be looking to win a sixth term in the 2024 general elections. While corruption has become a major issue for the country, scandals have not impacted the influence of the party.

Cyril Ramaphosa re-elected as leader of ruling ANC party in South Africa

The African National Congress (ANC), which is in power in South Africa, held a meeting on Sunday to elect a new party leader, pitting current president Cyril Ramaphosa against former health minister Zweli Mkhize. In the three decades after Nelson Mandela overthrew the country's white minority rule, the victor, who will compete for president in elections in 2024 under the ANC flag, has been all but certain of winning.

But given the ANC's declining popularity throughout that time and the potential that the party might lose its majority for the first time, this is no longer a given.

At the ANC's five-day conference in Johannesburg, more than 4,400 delegates must choose which of the two contenders is best suited to turn around the organisation’s prospects.

As nominations were being finalised early on Sunday morning, their fans engaged in a sing-off. Supporters of Ramaphosa were singing and putting up two fingers to indicate a second term as leader.

The words "change" and "He (Ramaphosa) is not coming back" were shouted by Mkhize's fans.

Prior to facing pressure to resign due to a controversy involving the discovery of a cash cache at his farm, Ramaphosa was the front-runner to win. Ramaphosa maintains his innocence while supporters of former president Jacob Zuma are attempting to remove Ramaphosa using the controversy.

Zuma is under investigation for a number of corruption charges, which he fiercely disputes.

Mkhize became the Zuma block's most influential politician. Ramaphosa fired him amid allegations of fraud in the COVID-19 bids last year, which the former minister refutes.
