A convicted rapist and murderer, Thabo Bester, who had escaped from a prison in South Africa by faking his death, was arrested in Tanzania, said the government in a statement on Saturday (April 8). Bester, who is also known as the “Facebook rapist” for using the social media platform to lure his victims, escaped from a privately-run prison in Bloemfontein.

Bester’s arrest in Tanzania

Notably, while the "Facebook rapist" had escaped from prison last year, South African police found it out only last month. The arrest took place late Friday when Bester and two of his suspected accomplices were apprehended in the city of Arusha in Tanzania.

One of the two alleged accomplices is said to be his girlfriend, who along with the third suspect will be extradited to South Africa. The arrest was confirmed in a statement by the South African police who said that Bester along with his “accomplice Dr Nandipha Maguduma along with a Mozambican national have been arrested in Tanzania late last night (Friday).”

The police also believe that the trio was “heading for the border of another country,” said South Africa's Police Minister Bheki Cele, on Saturday. He added that they had arrived in Arusha from Dar es Salaam. Reportedly, they also had several passports with fake aliases.

Furthermore, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said that a South African delegation will travel to Tanzania to bring the fugitives back. “We are confident that we will receive maximum cooperation from our sister nation, Tanzania, to assist us to bring these fugitives to justice,” said the justice minister.

How Bester faked his own death

Bester, who was reportedly at large for at least a year, was thought to be dead after setting himself on fire in his prison cell at the maximum security facility, Bloemfontein, operated by multinational company G4S. The British-owned security company has since dismissed three prison employees in connection with the incident who have also been accused of helping him flee.

However, it was not until months of reporting by the South African non-profit news agency GroundUp suggested that he was alive. Last month, the prison admitted that the body found burned in the cell was not Bester’s.

Subsequently, the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, ordered that the investigation into the Mangaung prison escape be prioritised, said the police statement.

Additionally, a murder case was also registered and is currently being investigated after DNA analysis that confirmed that the body of the deceased which was found, was not Bester's. The body's identity is still unknown.

“The autopsy report went on to further reveal that the deceased had died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head, and was already dead, prior to the arson incident,” said the police statement.

The case of the ‘Facebook rapist’

Dubbed the “Facebook rapist”, Bester was convicted in 2012 for the rape and murder of his model girlfriend Nomfundo Tyhulu and a year after he was found guilty of raping and robbing two other women. Prior to his escape, Bester also reportedly ran a scam media business from prison using a false name.

South Africa's request to extradite the fugitive Gupta brothers has been rejected by a United Arab Emirates court, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola informed on Friday.

South Africa's request to extradite the fugitive Gupta brothers has been rejected by a United Arab Emirates court, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola informed on Friday. The two brothers named Atul and Rajesh Gupta were arrested in the UAE last year and face charges of political corruption involving former South African president Jacob Zuma. Lamola in a statement noted that the South African government received diplomatic communication from the UAE side on Thursday, a little less than a month after extradition hearings had already concluded. "In the evening of the 6th of April 2023, we were provided with a note verbale from the UAE in which we learnt with shock and dismay that an extradition hearing had been concluded in the UAE courts on the 13th of February 2023 and our extradition request was unsuccessful," The UAE court noted it had the jurisdiction to prosecute the Guptas for money laundering offences that were carried out in the Arab country as well as South Africa. WATCH | Gupta Brothers nabbed in UAE | Duo wanted in $1.6mn fraud × "The reasons provided for denying our request are inexplicable and fly in the face of the assurances given by Emirati authorities that our requests meet their requirements," said Lamola He added that South Africa will 'promptly appeal' the decision and seek extradition as soon as possible. "That is the life we have been living with the authorities in the UAE. We still intend to engage our counterparts... to ensure that the decision of the court is promptly appealed." ALSO READ | How Gupta brothers from India landed South Africa's ruling party in its biggest crisis Zumas + Guptas = Zuptas The Gupta brothers have been accused of building a huge business empire in myriad fields such as media, mining and computer equipment - primarily due to the help of Zuma who also helped siphon off state assets from South Africa. In 1993, Atul founded Sahara Computers, the family's first business in South Africa. Based on JSE-listed holdings, Atul Gupta became the seventh-wealthiest person in South Africa in 2016, with an estimated net worth of R10.7 billion (US$773.47 million). However, over the years, the Zumas and the Guptas forged such close relations that a joint term was coined for them - the "Zuptas". Throughout Zuma's nine-year tenure, the Guptas plundered South Africa - the continent's most advanced economy. According to reports, Gupta's cauldron of corruption may have cost the South African exchequer as much as $3.2 billion. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

South African Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius might be released from prison this week, a decade after he killed his girlfriend in a crime that gripped the world.

A parole board is to decide whether Pistorius should be let out early, after a hearing in Pretoria on Friday.

"The board must determine whether the purpose of imprisonment has been served," said Department of Correctional Services' spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo.

Pistorius, who is now 36, shot dead Reeva Steenkamp, a model, in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013, when he fired four times through the bathroom door of his ultra-secure Pretoria house.

He pleaded not guilty and denied that he killed Steenkamp in a rage, saying he mistook her for a burglar.

Known worldwide as the "Blade Runner" because of his carbon-fibre prosthetics, he was sentenced to 13 years behind bars.

Offenders in South Africa are automatically eligible for parole consideration after serving half of their sentence.

Pistorius has served more than half, having started his term in 2014.

Decision time

As part of his rehabilitation, Pistorius met Steenkamp's parents June and Barry last year, in a process authorities said aims to ensure inmates "acknowledge the harm they have caused to their victims and the society at large".

Reeva's mother June will attend the hearing to "make representations to the parole board" which will include both parents' victim impact statements, said Tania Koen, a lawyer representing the Steenkamps.

June's husband Barry is unable to travel due to ill health, Koen added.

Koen said she was not at liberty to discuss the Steenkamps' position on a possible release of their daughter's killer.

"They are going to make their submissions. And then obviously, the law will take its course," she said.

The board, normally made up of correctional services and community members, will consider whether an inmate has been rehabilitated or still poses a danger to society, said Kelly Phelps, a law professor at the University of Cape Town.

This will take into account the seriousness of the offence as well as Pistorius' behaviour behind bars, including whether he attended educational and life skills programs.

Possible conditions

Release on parole usually comes with some conditions, such as monitoring from authorities and duty to report to a community correction centre.

"It's very common to have things like alcohol restrictions, restrictions on your ability to own firearms... and to require participation in counselling," said Phelps.

Day parole, where the inmate returns to prison at night, and community service are also on the cards, said Nxumalo of the correctional services.

A year before killing Steenkamp, Pistorius became the first double amputee to race at the Olympics at the London 2012 games.

He then was a sporting icon admired worldwide and courted by sponsors.

But his achievements came crashing down after the killing, with his character and past closely scrutinised in a trial that made headlines around the world.

He was initially sentenced to six years in jail but the term was later lengthened to 13 after the state appealed that it was unduly lenient.

Parole decisions are usually known the same day of the hearing or a day later, but Nxumalo hinted that in Pistorius's case "the decision may not be taken on the same".

If denied, the offender has the right to approach the courts for review.

South Africa President Cyril Ramphosa on Monday (February 27), that the country would seize "an opportunity" to tackle dirty money. The statement from the president came after South Africa was placed on 'grey list' by Financial Action Task Force (FATF), global money laundering and terror funding watchdog.

The FATF sets standards for more than 200 countries and jurisdictions on cross-border financial crime -- a system intended to encourage national authorities improve their performance.

"The grey listing is an opportunity for us to tighten our controls and improve our response to organised crime", Ramaphosa said in his weekly newsletter.

"The situation is concerning but less dire than some people suggest," he added.

"The fundamentals are in place and we know what we need to do to get off the grey list," Ramaphosa said, stressing he was "determined to do this as quickly as possible".

South Africa's state sector was devastated by corruption under former president Jacob Zuma, which Ramaphosa vowed to clean up when he took office five years ago.

The radical leftist opposition party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), reacted strongly to the grey listing, lashing Ramaphosa as "a criminal who is leading a criminal state".

Ramaphosa is "part of the reasons why South Africa has been grey listed," it said on Friday.

South Africa and Nigeria were the only new entries to the "grey list," whose 23 members include the Cayman Islands, Democratic Repupublic of Congo, the Philippines, Syria and Yemen.

History was created in Cape Town on Sunday when Australia won their sixth ICC Women's T20 World Cup title, beating South Africa by 19 runs. Playing their seventh successive T20 WC final, this was Southern Stars' third trophy win on the trot. The Meg Lanning-led team managed to come out on top after holding the nerves, the better of the two teams. The match ebbed and flowed throughout but it was Australia that played the big moments better. Chasing a stiff target of 157, South African openers Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits were not allowed by the Australian bowlers to run away with the game. The bowlers pulled their length back and bowled short of good length deliveries. Consequently, the hosts could only muster 22 runs in the first six overs. After Marizanne Kapp came to the crease, she stamped her authority instantly by cracking a beautiful cover drive past a packed offside ring. Needing 105 runs in the final 10 overs, Wolvaardt stepped up on the gas and reached her fifty in 43 deliveries. Just when it appeared that the Proteas were cooking, Meghan Schutt, summoned to bowl the 17th over by skipper Meg Lanning, managed to trap Wolvaardt plumb in front of the stumps. Wolvaardt's dismissal knocked the wind out of South Africa's sails and they never managed to recover from thereon. Chloe Tryon belted a few lusty blows but could not get anywhere near the finishing line. Another incredible chapter in the special, special history of this team! #T20WorldCup pic.twitter.com/pKC3GwwNfC — Australian Women's Cricket Team 🏏 (@AusWomenCricket) February 26, 2023 × Batting first, Australia were off the blocks in a sedate manner as Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney only scored 25 off the first four overs. Healy mistimed a forcing backfoot shot off the last ball of Kapp’s over and was caught at mid-off for 18. Australia attempted to surprise the opposition by bringing Ashleigh Gardner and it worked decently well. She hit successive boundaries off left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba and successive sixes off medium-pacer Nadine de Klerk in the following over. "I guess we've been longing for this moment since the last World Cup. We've played some fantastic cricket throughout the tournament and have come out on top. To be honest, probably the semi-finals. My role within the team is to change the game, with bat or ball," said Gardner in the post-match presentation ceremony where she was adjudged the 'Player of the Tournament'. On a sluggish pitch where batters were made to work hard for their runs, Beth Mooney stood out easily. She got stuck in and at the backend of the innings ensured that her side got close to the 160-run mark. She was declared the 'Player of the Match'. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
