The global news agency Al Jazeera exposes some corrupt activities by creating a four-part documentary series called 'Gold Mafia', which focuses on massive gold smuggling and money laundering in South Africa. Last week, the President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that they have launched an investigation into the matter.

<p>The United States envoy to South Africa, on Thursday (May 11), accused the country of supplying weapons to Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine despite the country’s neutral stance. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa calls the allegations “disappointing” in a strongly worded statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>What did the US envoy say?</strong></p>

<p>The US ambassador to South Africa, Reuben Brigety, in a press conference, said that Washington believes Pretoria had sent weapons and ammunition aboard the Russian freighter that docked at a Cape Town naval base in December. “We are confident that weapons were loaded onto that vessel and I would bet my life on the accuracy of that assertion,” said Brigety.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Washington has noted the docking of a Russian cargo ship Lady R in Simon’s Town between December 6 and December 8, 2022, “which we are confident uploaded weapons, ammunition … as it made its way back to Russia,” said the US envoy to South Africa. He added, “The arming of Russia by South Africa...is fundamentally unacceptable.”</p>

<p>He also spoke about how senior US officials have “profound concerns” about South Africa not respecting its professed stance of non-alignment and neutrality over the Russia-Ukraine conflict, adding that this “does not suggest to us the actions of a non-aligned country,” as quoted by Reuters. &nbsp;</p>

<p>“The arming of the Russians is extremely serious, and we do not consider this issue to be resolved,” said Brigety. Notably, South Africa is one of Russia’s most important allies on the continent, however, it has said that it is impartial to the conflict and has abstained from voting on several UN resolutions in connection with the ongoing war.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
<strong>How has South Africa responded?</strong></p>

<p>Following these allegations, president Ramaphosa’s office hit back and called it “disappointing” that the US envoy had “adopted a counter-productive public posture”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The Ambassador’s remarks undermine the spirit of cooperation and partnership that characterised the recent engagements between US government officials and a South African official delegation,” said Ramaphosa’s spokesman Vincent Magwenya, in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, that while there is no evidence provided to support these allegations by the US, “the government has undertaken to institute an independent enquiry to be led by a retired judge.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this year, South Africa also held a joint military exercise with Russia and China which the US and other countries in the West expressed concerns about. Additionally, a sanctioned Russian military cargo plane landed at an air force base in the middle of the night to deliver what defence authorities described as “diplomatic mail.”<br />
<br />
<strong>South Africa summons US envoy</strong><br />
<br />
South Africa's Foreign Ministry also summoned the&nbsp;US ambassador on Friday following the allegations and said he apologised for the remarks and Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor has&nbsp;also discussed the issue with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.<br />
<br />
After the talks, Brigety took to Twitter and wrote that he was&nbsp;grateful for the opportunity to speak with Pandor and "correct any misimpressions left by my public remarks." The&nbsp;South African Foreign Ministry also issued a statement, later Friday, and said that&nbsp;Brigety "admitted that he crossed a line" and&nbsp;"apologized unreservedly."</p>

<p><strong>South Africa’s vow to probe allegations a ‘welcome step’&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>During a briefing on Thursday, the US State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel without repeating the allegations told reporters that Washington had serious concerns about the docking of the ship at a South African naval port.&nbsp;</p>

<p>US officials had also raised those concerns directly with multiple South African officials, he added. “The deeply concerning piece of this is the docking of a sanctioned Russian vessel at a South African naval port,” said Patel.&nbsp;</p>

Britain is all set to welcome its new Monarch. London is bustling with excitement for the coronation of King Charles III. King Charles will be crowned at Westminster Abbey on May 6. The coronation will see the 74-year-old crowned with a solid gold crown made in 1661. The St Edward's Crown is adorned with precious stones. One of the world's largest diamonds is also adorned in this crown known as the Star of Africa. Some South Africans are now calling for Britain to return the diamond which is set in the royal sceptre.

South Africans want UK to return diamond set in crown jewel ahead of King Charles III's coronation

British Museum, even after being the world's largest museum, is still called the 'museum of stolen goods'. A variety of reasons support this fact. UK is often criticised for not returning the goods to their respective owners. And now, before the coronation of King Charles, some South Africans believe, that it's time for UK to return world's largest diamond. For details, watch the video.

<p>After two Cheetahs brought to India&nbsp;died within a month, raising questions over their care, the South African forest department has issued a clarifying statement. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) stated that such carnivore reintroductions in alien climates are extremely complex and come with inherent risks. The death of two cheetahs is within the expected mortality rates for a project of this nature, it said.</p>

<p>"The cheetah joined eight of the mammals relocated to India's Kuno National Park from Namibia in September 2022. The two cheetah deaths (one from Namibia and one from South Africa) observed to date are within expected mortality rates for a project of this nature," read the statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Large carnivore reintroductions are extremely complex and inherently risky operations. This is a critical phase of the project, with cheetahs being released into larger environments where there is increasingly less control over their day-to-day wellbeing," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The South African authorities stated they were awaiting an autopsy report of the death but there was no indication that the animals may have died due to any form of infectious disease or that there was any threat to their survival in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;"All the South African cheetahs are in larger enclosures and are closely monitored twice daily. As they are wild cheetahs, their behaviour, movements, and body condition must be evaluated from a distance, limiting the ability of teams on the ground to gain precise knowledge of their health status."</p>

The two cheetah deaths (one from Namibia and one from South Africa) observed to date are within expected mortality rates for a project of this nature," read the statement. "Large carnivore reintroductions are extremely complex and inherently risky operations. This is a critical phase of the project, with cheetahs being released into larger environments where there is increasingly less control over their day-to-day wellbeing," it added. The South African authorities stated they were awaiting an autopsy report of the death but there was no indication that the animals may have died due to any form of infectious disease or that there was any threat to their survival in India. "All the South African cheetahs are in larger enclosures and are closely monitored twice daily. As they are wild cheetahs, their behaviour, movements, and body condition must be evaluated from a distance, limiting the ability of teams on the ground to gain precise knowledge of their health status." WATCH | What is Project Cheetah and how is it significant to India? × Death of Sasha and Uday On February 18, 12 cheetahs arrived in India aboard a C-17 Globemaster cargo plane of the Indian Air Force from Johannesburg in South Africa. Soon, the healthy cheetahs were released in the Kuno National Park, located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. However, on March 27, one of the eight Namibian cheetahs named Sasha, aged little more than four-and-a-half-years, died in the park. Though complete details were not released, media reports claimed that Sasha died due to cardiopulmonary failure. Last week, the second Namibian cheetah, named Uday, a male, died. JS Chauhan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Wildlife, revealed that "during the inspection in the morning, Uday, brought from South Africa was found dull with head down following which veterinarians attending him alerted senior officials and the feline was taken out from the large enclosure for treatment. Unfortunately, around 4 pm, the cheetah passed away." South Africa is not planning to quit the International Criminal Court, as earlier suggested by president Cyril Ramaphosa. Just hours before, Ramaphosa had said his African National Congress had decided to withdraw South Africa from the International Court. The president's office cited a communication error from the ruling A.N.C. Party. In march, the International Criminal Court announced an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin. The warrant against the Russian president is based on the war crime accusation of unlawfully deporting Ukrainian children. Russia denies the allegations. The I.C.C. arrest warrant meant that Pretoria, due to host the Brics Summit this year, would have to detain Putin on arrival. The arrest warrant for Putin, a sitting head of state of a permanent member of U.N. Security Council, is an unprecedented step for the Hague-based court. Russia is not a party to the international criminal court, so it was unclear if or how Putin could ever end up in the dock.

<p>Khan is dubbed as the missing link in the case and the one who helped the Guptas bleed the country's exchequer dry. He is part of the gold mafia that is into smuggling and money laundering gangs operating in Southern Africa, the publication claimed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the lid was blown over the corruption saga of the Gupta brothers, the South African government formed an investigation panel named the 'Zondo Commission' in 2018. The panel identified three companies viz., Varlozone, Zokubyte and Coral General Traders as the epicentre of the fraud and capture of state funds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the investigators never managed to identify the lynchpin who operated these fraudulent companies. Notably, the report claims that Khan, through his companies, transferred the looted money abroad on behalf of the Guptas. The money used to vanish soon and the investigators were left chasing nothing but invisible air.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The investigators made a connection when they found out that money funnelled through Varlozone went to Griffin Line General Trading — a Dubai-based company which was reportedly owned by the Gupta brothers. However, upon investigation, they found Varlozone was owned by Shah Bukhari who was only a frontman.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We were basically looking at the flow of money into this network from the state capture and we knew it was going through a money laundering network,” a Zondo Commission investigator was quoted as saying by the publication.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report alleged that Varlozone managed to launder as much as $1.8m of state capture money over a six-month period while Zokubyte laundered at least $600,000. Coral General Traders,&nbsp;the third company, acted as a temporary safe space for the funds which was parked there before being moved offshore.&nbsp;</p>
