Scientists have discovered that the ancient human species Homo naledi buried their dead, despite having brains, a third of the size of modern humans or homosapiens. The claims published in a new series of papers can fundamentally alter our understanding of human beliefs, culture and symbolism.

Usually, big brains are equated to higher intelligence. However, the discovery that Homo naledi not only buried their dead but made engravings deep within a cave system in southern Africa some 300,000 years ago suggests that we may have been a touch wrong.

The revelations, detailed in three studies, accepted for publication in the journal eLife shed light on our intricate ancient history. Paleoanthropologist Lee Berger who first reported the discovery of Homo naledi in 2013, inside the Rising Star cave system 25 miles northwest of Johannesburg is responsible for the new claims.

Berger and his team found more than 1,800 bone fragments deep in an underground chamber reachable only by a four-story vertical drop. The only plausible explanation for the situation seemed like a burial which may push the "body burials" timeline by at least 10,000 years.

"The position and intactness of some skeletal remains suggested that the dead may have been carefully laid out on the floor of the chamber rather than tossed down the Chute to collect as a jumble of bones at its base," read a report in National Geographic which has sponsored the research.

Based on the research, scientists argue that brain size shouldn’t be a significant factor in determining whether a hominin species is capable of complex cognition. If all the hypotheses regarding Homo naledi are proven true, it would mean that with a brain capacity of less than 600 cubic centimetres (the modern adult brain has 1,5000 cubic centimetres), the species was able to bury their dead, carve intricate drawings and lit fire.

“This deserves a global human conversation. What do we do next? How do we continue? We have just discovered a cultural space of another species that's not [modern] human, that’s not in our grade level. Not like us. How do we treat it? And I'm waiting to hear that," said Berger.

Will Putin attend BRICS summit in August? Putin's arrest overshadows FMs meet

The foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) gathered Thursday in South Africa’s Cape Town for a two-day summit, with agendas of a common trade currency and expansion of the bloc on the table. However, the discussions were soon overshadowed by one burning question: Will South Africa host Russian President Vladimir Putin in August for the summit of BRICS heads of state slated to be held in Johannesburg?

Looking at legal options: South Africa

South Africa's Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor was quoted by Reuters as saying that her country was exploring legal options if Putin, declared a war criminal by the International Criminal Court and subjected to an arrest warrant, can travel to South Africa to attend the BRICS summit.

"Our government is currently looking at what the legal options are with respect to this matter," she told reporters, adding that an invitation has been issued to all BRICS heads of state.

The statement comes days after several media reports indicated that South Africa will issue blanket diplomatic immunity to all participants of the BRICS summit, paving the way for the Russian strongman to visit Johannesburg without any complications.

West’s hegemony challenged

Pandor, speaking on behalf of BRICS, emphasised the alliance's ambition to provide global leadership in a world marked by competition, geopolitical tensions, inequality, and declining global security. She highlighted the need for reforming global decision-making structures, including the United Nations Security Council, as the concentration of economic power leaves many nations vulnerable.

India’s Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar echoed this sentiment, emphasising that traditional approaches are insufficient for addressing new challenges. He said, “Old ways cannot address new situations. We are a symbol of change. We must act."

The foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) gathered Thursday in South Africa’s Cape Town for a two-day summit, with agendas of a common trade currency and expansion of the bloc on the table.

Looking at legal options: South Africa South Africa's Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor was quoted by Reuters as saying that her country was exploring legal options if Putin, declared a war criminal by the International Criminal Court and subjected to an arrest warrant, can travel to South Africa to attend the BRICS summit. West’s hegemony challenged Pandor, speaking on behalf of BRICS, emphasised the alliance's ambition to provide global leadership in a world marked by competition, geopolitical tensions, inequality, and declining global security. We must act." South Africa is battling acute power crisis and the government is fast running out of time to fix the decade-old problem. The citizens are fed up and several protests have erupted in the last few months. The problem is huge therefore it needs an immediate attention. On March 7, 2023, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa as Minister of Electricity in order to coordinate government’s response to the electricity crisis as a national priority. The President on Friday (May 26), signed a proclamation that transfers certain powers and functions to the Minister of Electricity certain as provided by the Electricity Regulation Act (Act No 4 of 2006), a statement from the Presidency said. The President has also transferred to the Minister of Electricity relevant powers and functions set out in Section 34(2) of the Electricity Regulation Act. Section 34 of the Act deals with new generation capacity and provides as follows: (1) The Minister may, in consultation with the Regulator – (a) determine that new generation capacity is needed to ensure the continued uninterrupted supply of electricity; (b) determine the types of energy sources from which electricity must be generated, and the percentages of electricity that must be generated from such sources; (c) determine that electricity thus produced may only be sold to the persons or in the manner set out in such notice; (d) determine that electricity thus produced must be purchased by the persons set out in such notice; (e) require that new generation capacity must – (i) be established through a tendering procedure which is fair, equitable, transparent, competitive and cost-effective; (ii) provide for private sector participation. This proclamation will provide the Minister of Electricity with the powers necessary to direct the procurement of new generation capacity and ensure security of supply. Other powers and functions contained in the Electricity Regulation Act – including those related to the implementation of determinations made in terms of section 34 – will remain with the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy. The President’s delineation of powers and functions is directed at ensuring effective coordination and dedicated focus to deal more effectively and urgently with the electricity crisis. The Minister of Electricity will oversee all aspects of the electricity crisis response, including the work of the National Energy Crisis Committee. This will provide a single point of command for government’s efforts to close the shortfall in electricity supply. The Minister will work full-time with the Eskom board and management to end load-shedding and ensure that the Energy Action Plan announced by the President is implemented without delay" Last week, the countrys power utility, Eskom, warned that the country faces a difficult winter season ahead with the likelihood of increased national blackouts. South Africans are currently facing power cuts for up to 10 hours a day because of regular breakdowns at its ageing old coal-fired power stations and years of mismanagement and corruption at the company.
A former police chief in Rwanda, Fulgence Kayishema, who is accused of ordering the killings of some 2,000 ethnic Tutsis in a church has been arrested in South Africa, said a United Nations war crimes tribunal and South African police. The killing took place in 1994 during the Rwandan genocide. Kayishema has been on the run since 2001 when the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) indicted him for genocide in Nyange Catholic Church in Kibuye Prefecture.

"His arrest ensures that he will finally face justice for his alleged crimes," said Serge Brammertz, prosecutor at the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), which has replaced the ICTR since it wound up in 2008. Brammertz was quoted by Reuters.

At the time of his arrest, Kayishema was living under the false name Donatien Nibashumba, at a grape farm in Paarl, in Western Cape province. The arrest was made on Wednesday (May 25) by an elite South African police unit known as the Hawks.

"The fugitive will remain in custody to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate Court for his first appearance on Friday ... pending his extradition to Rwanda," the unit said in a statement.
