South Africa's former president Jacob Zuma reported back to prison on Friday only to be swiftly released, in a government move lashed by the opposition as a "monumental insult" to the public.

In the latest twist arising from a sentence for contempt of court, Zuma was ordered to report back to jail, arriving at 6:00 am (0400 GMT) at a detention facility in the eastern town of Estcourt, the prison service said.

There, he was "admitted into the system" -- only to be let go in just over an hour, under a "remission process" to ease overcrowding in prison, according to the national commissioner of correctional services, Makgothi Thobakgale.

"Upon admission into the system he was subjected to administrative processes... He was then released," Thobakgale told a press conference in Pretoria.

Zuma, 81, was sentenced to 15 months in June 2021 after refusing to testify before a panel probing financial corruption and cronyism under his presidency.

He started serving his term in July 2021, sparking protests that descended into riots and looting that left more than 350 dead in the worst violence to hit South Africa since the advent of democracy.

But after just two months he was freed on medical parole for an undisclosed condition.

In November last year an appeals court found the release was illegally granted and ordered Zuma back to the Estcourt Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal province.

South Africa's prison service, which had granted Zuma's conditional release, appealed the decision, but the bid was dismissed by the Constitutional Court last month.

Release

Thobakgale said the ex-president had been ordered to return to jail on Friday in compliance with the ruling.

But Zuma immediately benefited from a remission of non-violent offenders approved by President Cyril Ramaphosa, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said.

Mzwanele Manyi, a spokesman for Zuma's foundation said the ex-president was "at home" and consulting with his legal team.

The decision was met with outrage by some opposition parties and scepticism from the press, with Thobakgale and Lamola facing a barrage of questions over the timing of the remission process, which began on Friday.

Lamola said the "exercise of exploring special remission" started in April, and more than 24,000 inmates, about two-thirds of them currently under correctional supervision and parole, would be released under the process.

The move "will alleviate overcrowding" which "poses a direct threat to inmate health, security, and management, and it could lead to a surge in gangsterism," the minister said.

South Africa captain Siya Kolisi was almost lost for words as he consoled the trio of senior Springboks who look likely to miss the Rugby World Cup in France having been left out of the 33-player squad announced by coach Jacques Nienaber on Tuesday. Centre Lukhanyo Am (knee), flyhalf Handre Pollard (calf) and lock Lood de Jager (illness) are all missing from the group. I don't have the words to sum up their contributions to the team."

"But with their injury timelines there is hope that they might still come back into the team if anybody is injured."

South African Foreign Minister Pandor lauds India's important role in BRICS

South African city of Cape Town’s public transport system has been paralysed after a taxi strike began last week, which has since turned violent and led to the death of two people, said the police on Monday (August 7). Australia and the United Kingdom issued a travel warning about the potential danger of travelling to Cape Town.

About the recent violence

At least two people were allegedly shot dead in separate incidents during the taxi strike in Cape Town on Monday morning, said the police. The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said that the first death occurred when a driver fired shots at a person who was allegedly pelting stones at the vehicles.

“An individual was shot dead and three others injured after a motorist was pelted with stones on Airport Approach Road. The driver responded to the attack by firing several shots,” said Potelwa, as quoted by News24. An investigation has been launched into the incident.

The police on Monday also found the body of a 28-year-old man who had been shot multiple times, said the local media report. Separately, a report by AFP citing local officials said that a police officer was shot dead in a vehicle while patrolling a township 20 kilometres southeast of Cape Town, on Friday night.

“(The) possibility that the attack is related to the ongoing taxi strike cannot be ruled out,” said the police, adding that the officers were “performing crime prevention patrols to quell taxi related incidents”.

South African city of Cape Town’s public transport system has been paralysed after a taxi strike began last week, which has since turned violent and led to the death of two people, said the police on Monday (August 7).

South African city of Cape Town’s public transport system has been paralysed after a taxi strike began last week, which has since turned violent and led to the death of two people, said the police on Monday (August 7). Australia and the United Kingdom issued a travel warning about the potential danger of travelling to Cape Town. About the recent violence At least two people were allegedly shot dead in separate incidents during the taxi strike in Cape Town on Monday morning, said the police. According to reports, multiple vehicles have been set on fire and several roads have been blocked due to the protests, which have since left thousands of commuters stranded. In a statement, the local officials said that two government vehicles had been set on fire and one had been hijacked. South Africa's radical leftist opposition party urges leaders of China, India and Brazil to boycott BRICS

Madhya Pradesh wildlife officials, along with Namibian experts, are struggling to track two female cheetahs, Nirva and Dhatri, at Kuno National Park as the radio collar of one of the cheetahs has gone silent due to a technical glitch.

Now, they are being forced to use various traditional methods such as parading on elephants, deploying ground teams and CCTVs, and seeking assistance from local villagers, to locate the cheetahs.

Unfortunately, Nirva has remained untraceable since its radio collar stopped working.

What's the purpose of the tracing exercise?

The aim of this tracking exercise is to bring the free-ranging cheetahs back to their enclosures so that their radio collars can be removed and the animals can be checked for possible infections caused by wet weather conditions.

This comes after the unfortunate deaths of two male cheetahs in July.

Earlier on July 25, Prabhas and Veera, two translocated cheetahs, were successfully brought back to the enclosure for health checkups and were found to be in good health.

Current status

Currently, there are 13 cheetahs, including seven males and six females, safely inside the enclosure. Despite some issues with the radio collars, the monitoring teams are continuously observing and tracking the cheetahs.

Earlier, two male cheetahs, Tejas and Suraj, died allegedly due to infections allegedly caused by their collars during extreme wet conditions. However, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has dismissed these reports as "unscientific."

Madhya Pradesh wildlife officials, along with Namibian experts, are struggling to track two female cheetahs, Nirva and Dhatri, at Kuno National Park as the radio collar of one of the cheetahs has gone silent due to a technical glitch.

Also read: India loses another cheetah in Kuno National Park, eighth in five months Earlier on July 25, Prabhas and Veera, two translocated cheetahs, were successfully brought back to the enclosure for health checkups and were found to be in good health. Current status Currently, there are 13 cheetahs, including seven males and six females, safely inside the enclosure. Despite some issues with the radio collars, the monitoring teams are continuously observing and tracking the cheetahs. Earlier, two male cheetahs, Tejas and Suraj, died allegedly due to infections allegedly caused by their collars during extreme wet conditions. However, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has dismissed these reports as "unscientific." Watch: India: One more cheetah dies at Kuno National Park × The park has experienced several other unfortunate incidents with cheetahs, including the deaths of six cheetahs, including three cubs, earlier. There have been injuries and fatalities due to skirmishes and health issues like renal failure and cardiac failure.
Scientists have discovered traces of the world’s oldest-known glaciers hiding near gold deposits in South Africa. The glacial sediments, according to the researchers, date back to 2.9 billion years. The study published in the journal Geochemical Perspectives Letters also suggests the presence of continental ice caps at the time or that the area was closer to the Earth's poles.

How was the study conducted?

The study was conducted by researchers, Professor Axel Hofmann of the University of Johannesburg and Professor Ilya Bindeman from the University of Oregon. The scientists unearthed shale deposits and analysed core samples from the rocks sitting under the world’s largest gold deposits in South Africa.

The samples collected from the field sites from the Kaapvaal Craton, South Africa were said to be a part of the Pongola Supergroup which is known to be some of the most extensive and well-preserved volcano-sedimentary successions formed in the Mesoarchaean era (between 3.2 billion to 2.8 billion years ago).

The researchers also analysed the core samples from the same region to determine the climatic conditions at the time when sediments were formed for which they used triple oxygen isotope analysis. This method measures three different forms of oxygen or isotopes present in the sediment.

About their findings

The scientists found that certain isotopes in their samples matched those common in icy temperatures, which suggests that the climate must have been cold when the rocks were deposited which indicates the presence of ice.

They also discovered the world’s oldest known fossilised glacial moraines, which is “basically the debris left by a glacier as it gradually melts and contracts,” explained Bindeman, adding “These are the oldest moraine deposits ever found.”

What else does the study suggest?

The presence of this glacial material could give us clues about Earth’s climate and geography during this period. One of the theories that the study’s authors present is that this area of South Africa may have been close to one of the poles 2.9 billion years ago.

“Another possibility is that the whole Earth was in a ‘snowball Earth’ period,” said Hofmann, adding that this period was marked by low atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane and led to a “reverse greenhouse effect,” causing much of the planet to freeze.

“Scientists believe that this may have happened on a couple of occasions in the more recent past. If so, this would be the earliest much global cooling period recorded. Either possibility is scientifically interesting,” Hofmann added.
South African high court orders government to arrest Vladimir Putin on arrival for war crimes

According to South Africa's way to the BRICS group, more than 40 countries have shown interest in joining the block which is likely to increase the organization's political influence as a whole of course.
Two people were killed on Wednesday following anti-government protests in Kenya, a hospital official said, as the interior ministry announced the arrest of over 300 others in connection with the demonstrations.

Veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga has held several rounds of protests since March against the government, alarming the international community which has joined calls for a political solution after earlier demonstrations left more than a dozen dead.

Clashes between police and protesters led to two deaths in the opposition bastion of Kisumu, said George Rae, CEO of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga hospital.

"There are two bodies recorded at the morgue with gunshot wounds," he told AFP by telephone, adding that 14 others were hospitalised.

Odinga's Azimio alliance has vowed to stage three straight days of protests this week, and on Wednesday evening urged "Kenyans to come out in an even bigger way tomorrow".

Although Wednesday's protests in Nairobi and other towns appeared to be more muted than earlier demonstrations, with fewer reports of casualties resulting from sporadic clashes, Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki said the authorities had recorded many cases of vandalism and looting.

"More than 300 people have been arrested across the country and will be charged with various crimes, including looting, malicious damage of property, arson, robbery with violence, assaulting law enforcers," Kindiki said.

Schools and shops were closed in Nairobi, Kisumu and the port city of Mombasa, with small groups of mostly young men setting fire to tyres and engaging in running battles with police.

Police fired tear gas at scattered groups of demonstrators in Nairobi's Kibera slum and the towns of Homa Bay, Kisii and Migori, all Odinga strongholds, while offices in the capital's business district were largely shuttered.

'Wrong direction'

It is the third time this month that Odinga has staged mass rallies against a government he says is illegitimate and responsible for a cost-of-living crisis.

The government in turn has accused the opposition of derailing efforts to improve the economy and fomenting chaos.

Two people were killed on Wednesday following anti-government protests in Kenya, a hospital official said, as the interior ministry announced the arrest of over 300 others in connection with the demonstrations.

'Wrong direction' It is the third time this month that Odinga has staged mass rallies against a government he says is illegitimate and responsible for a cost-of-living crisis. The government in turn has accused the opposition of derailing efforts to improve the economy and fomenting chaos. "We do not want a country of violence or fighting or destruction of property," President William Ruto said during a visit to the Rift Valley town of Kericho. "The police must make sure they are firm on criminals, gangs and anarchists and all the people who want to cause mayhem."
