South Africa COVID update: South Africa warns of 5th COVID wave amid spike in cases

The COVID-19 cases are rising all around the world and South Africa, a country where the delta and Omicron variants of the virus caused a major issue, is no different. There has been an increase in cases lately and officials fear that the African nation may be entering the fifth wave of the pandemic.

According to the scientists in South Africa, the country has seen a huge rise in case due to the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron sub-variants and that can result into the beginning of the fifth wave. There has been some variation to Omicron, but the experts are not worried with the slight changes.

In an official health briefing, health minister Joe Phaahla said that the experts have not found any new variant and although hospitalisation has gone up, the death rate has remained constant.

South Africa had the worst case and death numbers in Africa during the fourth wave of COVID-19 and the experts are fearing a similar issue if they experience the fifth wave around May-June.

Bangladesh are still 314 runs behind their hosts’ total of 453 all out at St George’s Park and their first aim will be to avoid the follow-on when Mushfiqur Rahim (30 not out) and Yasir Ali (8 not out) resume on the third morning. Former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith said on Friday that he believes Rishabh Pant has the potential to become a superstar in the world of cricket and made it clear that even though there are a number of wicketkeeper batsmen performing well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and on the domestic circuit, he does not believe that there is any threat to Pant’s place in the Indian cricket team.

"I can't see Rishabh Pant missing out, despite the likes of Samson, DK and Kishan doing well. Ultimately, it will come down to combinations. Who gets picked will depend on the conditions and who they are coming up against... Pant has to be there. You can't leave out Pant. He is going to play all formats for India for a very long time. He's going to be a superstar," Smith told Cricket.com.

South African off-spinner Simon Harmer took all the wickets in his first test appearance for seven years as Bangladesh reached 98 for four at the close of play on a gloomy second day of the first test at Kingsmead on Friday.

The tourists are 269 runs behind South Africa’s first innings total of 367 in which Temba Bavuma fell seven runs short of a century, with the depleted home side, who are without their entire first-choice pace attack, taking control of the game with spin.

Opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy (44 not out) will resume on the third morning with nightwatchman Taskin Ahmed (0 not out), but the visitors were undone by some controlled slow bowling from Harmer (4-42) and Keshav Maharaj (0-24), who strangled the run rate as they conceded only 66 runs in 39 overs between them.

The pick of Harmer’s wickets was that of Najmul Hossain Shanto (38) as the ball pitched on middle stump and turned to hit the top of off. Keegan Petersen also took an excellent diving catch at short leg to dismiss visiting captain Mominul Haque for a duck.

Harmer had played the last of his five tests in 2015 before embarking on a career in English county cricket but has been recalled with a number of South Africa’s bowlers missing at the Indian Premier League.

The home side resumed their first innings on 233 for four, anchored by middle-order batsman Bavuma, who scored 93 in a workmanlike innings as he missed out on a second test ton in his 50th appearance.

Bavuma has averaged almost 50 in tests in the last 18 months and been a mainstay of the middle-order, but three figures continues to elude him, with his only test ton in eight years with the side coming against England in Cape Town in 2016.

On this occasion he was bowled trying to cut spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz (3-94) but was undone by the sharp turn.

South Africa’s tail wagged as they put on 122 for the final four wickets, helped by 38 not out from Harmer, while Bangladesh seamer Khaled Ahmed (4-92) was the most impressive of the visitors’ bowlers.

Temba Bavuma scored an unbeaten half-century as South Africa reached 233 for four at the premature close on a stop-start opening day of the first test against Bangladesh at Kingsmead on Thursday.

Play was called off with 76.5 overs bowled as the umpires deemed the light not good enough despite the sun shining down on the ground, a curious end to a day that had started with a 30-minute delay due to a problem with the sightscreen.

The steady Bavuma was 53 not out having put on the same number for the fifth wicket with Kyle Verreynne, who was not out on 27.

The pair will hope to push on to a big first-innings score on day two after the home side were sent into bat, another interesting decision at a ground where spin is very much in play in the latter stages of the match.

South Africa made a bright start, reaching 113 before captain Dean Elgar (67) was the first player dismissed, gloving a Khaled Ahmed delivery to wicketkeeper Litton Das.

Fellow opener Sarel Erwee (41) dragged the ball onto his stumps from spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz shortly afterwards as the visitors pegged back their hosts.

It got better for Bangladesh when Mehidy produced a remarkable gather and throw to run out Keegan Petersen (19).

Debutant Ryan Rickelton (21) looked in command until he tried a pull shot off seamer Ebadot Hossain and was caught at mid-on by the tourists’ skipper Mominul Haque.

South Africa are without a number of their regular players. Seamers Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen, and top-order batsmen Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen are all missing after opting to play in the Indian Premier League over this series.

The changes meant nearly all restrictions on social and economic activity were scrapped, he said.
