From death row to jail: Sheikh Hasina sentenced to 10 years on corruption charges

In this exclusive interview with Zee 24 Ghanta, a sister publication of WION, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addresses Bangladesh’s deepening political crisis, outlining priorities to restore constitutional governance, revive the economy, protect minorities, and rebuild democratic institutions.
1. What will be your priority after landing in Bangladesh?
My priority will be the restoration of constitutional governance and the rule of law. Bangladesh has endured months of lawlessness, mob violence, arbitrary detention, and the systematic dismantling of our democratic institutions. Over 152,000 people remain imprisoned on fabricated political charges, enduring brutal conditions and torture. Their release must be immediate. Beyond that, we must rebuild what Yunus has destroyed. Our fast-growing economy has stalled, and external investment all but ceased. Employment opportunities for youth, farmers, and labourers have vanished. The secular foundations of our republic have been attacked, and religious minorities live in fear every day. There is no rule of law in the country; what exists instead is mob terrorism. People from all walks of life are being persecuted by the extremist forces that Yunus has empowered. These forces, many of which are linked to proscribed terrorist groups, have been granted total impunity and proudly admit to the atrocities they committed. Bangladesh needs a government with a democratic mandate to heal these wounds, restore confidence, and set our country back on the path of progress. The Awami League is prepared to serve, whether in government or opposition, but we cannot do so while banned and persecuted.
2. Are Tariq Rahman and BNP trustworthy?
The BNP and the Awami League have a long history as parliamentary opponents. When we governed, they opposed us; when they governed, we opposed them. This is how democracy functions. Healthy opposition strengthens governance. However, we must not forget the facts. Tarique Rahman spent 17 years in comfortable exile in London after being found guilty of abetting the embezzlement of public funds. Leadership requires accountability and presence, not direction from abroad followed by sudden re-entry when conditions appear favourable. What concerns me more is the BNP's consistent willingness to align with extremist elements when it serves short-term interests. Already, we see BNP activists intimidating voters on their doorsteps, forcing them to vote under threats of violence and destruction. This is not democracy; it is coercion. If the BNP forms the next government, I would urge them to restore proper parliamentary democracy by lifting the ban on the Awami League and allowing us to serve as legitimate opposition. A parliament without genuine opposition is not a parliament at all.
3. Terrorist Osman Hadi was termed a martyr and was buried near Kazi Nazrul Islam. How do you look at this? National Poet and a terrorist lying side by side
Kazi Nazrul Islam stood for rebellion against oppression, for communal harmony, for the dignity of the oppressed. The violence that followed Sharif Osman Hadi’s death is the very antithesis of this. Every death associated with this violence is a loss. But the glorification of those who participated in violence and destruction is deeply troubling. Sharif Osman Hadi's death arose from electoral rivalries among BNP, Jamaat, and NCP candidates over the Dhaka-8 constituency. Rather than conducting a credible investigation, the authorities allowed mobs to burn newspaper offices with journalists inside and attack diplomatic missions. What concerns me most is the way these mobs sought to exact vengeance by attacking one of the fundamental pillars of our society: freedom of expression. During our time in government, we encouraged freedom of expression. Journalists were free to write without fear of intimidation or reprisals. Political opposition was welcomed as a hallmark of a healthy, functioning democracy. The glorification of this sort of violence by an unelected head of state who came to power by killing people, burning state property, and creating panic across the country is no surprise.
4. India's EAM S Jaishankar went to Khaleda Zia's last rites. How do you look at the BNP and India's relationship?
India's gesture was one of diplomatic courtesy and respect for a former head of government. Khaleda Zia’s role in political life is undeniable, and her contributions to the nation were significant. I extend my condolences to her family and to those who mourn her. However, India's fundamental interests remain unchanged. India wants a reliable partner in Bangladesh: one that can maintain stability, protect minorities, honour commitments, and uphold regional cooperation. The current situation in which extremist mobs terrorise religious minorities, threaten journalists, and attack diplomatic premises serves neither country. The ties that bind our countries run deep and have been forged through decades of careful cooperation and mutual respect. I have faith that the natural partnership between our countries will one day be restored.
5. How will you restructure your party, and what will be the role of the new generation inside your party wing?
The Awami League has never belonged to one family. It belongs to the tens of millions of Bangladeshis who believe in democracy, freedom, and the values of 1971. Our party emerged from the struggle for independence and remains rooted in every village and neighbourhood. This crisis has shown us where renewal is needed. We need leaders who connect with every generation, who understand the challenges facing young people in cities and rural villages alike, who can navigate the digital age while honouring our founding principles. The demand for fresh voices is justified, and we are listening. The achievements of our government were never the accomplishments of any single individual. They belonged to our party workers and to the Bangladeshi people who placed their trust in us nine times. That collective strength remains. Millions of Bangladeshis continue to place their trust in us and would vote for us again if we were allowed to participate in the upcoming elections. But meaningful restructuring requires democratic conditions to exist. You cannot renew a political party while it is banned, while thousands of our supporters are arbitrarily detained and subject to torture, and while membership itself is treated as a crime.
6. How did you spend the last year? Do you connect with your party regularly? Do you think it gives you extra strength?
I have watched from afar as everything we built has been systematically dismantled: the economic progress, the religious harmony, the institutional stability. It has been painful to witness the suffering of our people, the persecution of our supporters, and the attacks on minorities. But I have also witnessed extraordinary courage. Despite facing day-to-day harassment, imprisonment, and torture, Awami League supporters have refused to abandon their beliefs. Journalists have continued writing the truth about the realities of life in Bangladesh today despite attacks on their freedoms. Ordinary Bangladeshis have dared to speak out despite the risks. Staying connected with our party and our people has been essential. The Awami League is not merely a political organisation; it represents the spirit of 1971, the dream of a secular, democratic, prosperous Bangladesh. That dream cannot be extinguished by persecution. I remain patient because I know that regimes built on fear and exclusion do not endure. Bangladesh belongs to its people, and eventually, they will reclaim it.

Bangladesh’s Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has recommended that a magistrate court discharge former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 112 other accused in a case filed over an alleged attempted murder during the July uprising, citing lack of evidence and “factual errors” after investigators could not locate the claimed victims. The final investigation report submitted to the court highlights gaps in proof, and the next hearing is scheduled for February 3, 2026, as authorities consider dropping the charges entirely.

Bangladesh: Police Want Discharge Of Accused Against Hasina, PBI Cites Lack Of Proof

The death of Begum Khaleda Zia ends a major chapter in the decades-long revenge politics between the BNP leader and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina, which shaped Bangladesh’s history as an independent nation. Much of the country’s political story since the 1970s has been a struggle for power between a widow and a daughter. Sheikh Hasina is the daughter of Bangladesh’s founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Khaleda Zia, who died on Tuesday (Dec 30), was the widow of former military ruler General Ziaur Rahman. With Hasina ousted as prime minister in 2024 and Khaleda Zia’s son, Tarique Rahman, returning to Bangladesh after years of exile, an open question remains: will the BNP–Awami League rivalry pass into the next generation, or finally come to an end? Here is a timeline of how it all started, and evolved over four decades.
The roots of rivalry between Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina
The seeds of this rivalry were sown on 15 August 1975, when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed in a military coup along with at least 14 others, including his wife, three sons, close relatives and guards. Sheikh Hasina escaped the assassination because she was abroad at the time. Over the course of her political career, Hasina pursued those responsible for the coup. Many were tried decades later, and at least 12 former military officers were executed by hanging between 2010 and 2020 after lengthy trials. Also read: PM Modi 'deeply saddened' on Khaleda Zia's demise: What was her role in development of Bangladesh-India ties General Ziaur Rahman, who was aware of the 1975 coup but did not directly participate in it, consolidated power in its aftermath and eventually became president. His rule shifted Bangladesh away from the Awami League’s founding secular ethos and towards Bangladeshi nationalism. He rehabilitated Islamist political parties that had been marginalised after independence.
Ziaur Rahman’s assassination and a BNP–Awami League unlikely alliance
On 30 May 1981, General Ziaur Rahman was assassinated during a failed military coup in Chittagong, along with at least 10 to 15 others. His widow, Khaleda Zia, later blamed elements linked to the Awami League. What followed was another period of military rule under Hussain Muhammad Ershad, from 1982 to 1990. Despite their deep hostility, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League and Khaleda Zia’s BNP formed an uneasy alliance to oppose Ershad. This period saw repeated shutdowns, protests and violent clashes that paralysed the country and killed dozens. Eventually, sustained unrest forced Ershad to resign in December 1990.Also read: Bangladesh’s first female PM Khaleda Zia dies after prolonged illness: From democracy icon to years in jail – Here's all about her
Power seesaw between Zia and Hasina
In 1991, Bangladesh returned to parliamentary democracy. Khaleda Zia won the election and became the country’s first female prime minister. She governed from 1991 to 1996, with parliamentary support from the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami.But stability proved elusive. In 1996, after months of protests, strikes and a disputed election, Sheikh Hasina won power and served as prime minister from 1996 to 2001.Her term was marked by intense political confrontation, both rhetorical and physical. In 2001, Khaleda Zia returned to power with a landslide victory and ruled from 2001 to 2006. Violence after the election killed dozens of Awami League supporters and members of minority communities, according to human rights groups. Also read: No matches in BPL today? Bangladesh boards postpones games following death of two-time PM Khaleda Zia
An escalation of violence
Street clashes evolved into large-scale violence. On 21 August 2004, a grenade attack on an Awami League rally in Dhaka, aimed at Sheikh Hasina, killed at least 24 people and injured more than 300. Hasina survived but suffered permanent hearing damage.A prolonged legal process followed. Courts later blamed Islamist militants and senior BNP figures for the attack, findings that the BNP rejected as politically motivated. From 2006 to 2008, a BNP–Awami League deadlock over election administration led to further street violence. In January 2007, a military-backed caretaker government took power under a state of emergency, arresting both Hasina and Khaleda Zia on corruption charges. Dozens more people were killed during this period of unrest.
Hasina’s long rule: Historical justice or acts of retribution?
In the elections held at the end of 2008, Sheikh Hasina won a landslide victory, beginning a long period in office that lasted until 2024.During this time, trials were concluded for those convicted of involvement in the 1975 coup that killed her father and much of her family. At least 12 former military officers were hanged, which Hasina described as historic justice. BNP supporters, however, accused her of selective retribution.Between 2013 and 2016, Hasina’s government intensified prosecutions through the International Crimes Tribunal for atrocities committed during the 1971 war of independence. Several senior Jamaat-e-Islami leaders were executed by hanging, along with prominent BNP figures such as Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed. These executions triggered widespread unrest. Protests, riots and petrol-bomb attacks erupted nationwide, leading to an estimated 200 to 500 deaths over several years, including civilians, police officers and protesters.https://www.wionews.com/videos/khaleda-zia-bnp-leader-and-ex-pm-passes-away-at-80-1767065656966/embed
An election without the opposition
In 2014, the BNP boycotted the general election, demanding a neutral caretaker government to oversee the vote. With low voter turnout and most seats uncontested, the Awami League won overwhelmingly. Election-related violence killed dozens of people. In 2015, the BNP launched nationwide blockades and shutdowns, known as hartals, against Hasina’s rule. At least 50 people were killed, many in arson attacks, and thousands were arrested. In 2018, Khaleda Zia was convicted in corruption cases and jailed. She remained in prison or under house arrest until 2024. Supporters and international observers described the cases as politically motivated, a charge denied by the government.
The collapse of Hasina’s rule
In July and August 2024, student-led protests against Sheikh Hasina’s rule escalated into a mass uprising. Security forces responded with lethal force. Estimates of the death toll range from around 1,000 to 1,500, including protesters, bystanders and police. On 5 August 2024, Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh for India, and an interim administration took over.In the months that followed, Khaleda Zia was released from detention, and her convictions were overturned or suspended. By then, her health had significantly deteriorated. In 2025, Sheikh Hasina faced trials in absentia for alleged crimes linked to the 2024 crackdown and other cases. Some tribunals sentenced her to death in absentia, in rulings criticised internationally as politically motivated and lacking due process.
Return of the son, and death of the mother
As Khaleda Zia’s health worsened, her son Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh from Britain after years in exile. Just days after his return, Khaleda Zia died at the age of 80.This may mark the end of a rivalry that defined Bangladeshi politics for more than three decades. Yet it may also signal the beginning of a new phase of confrontation between the BNP and the Awami League, carried forward by a new generation.

Khaleda Zia’s death closes a brutal era of Bangladesh’s “Battle of the Begums”, marked by coups, assassinations, executions and mass protests that left thousands dead. Here is a timeline of that rivalry

Eventually, sustained unrest forced Ershad to resign in December 1990. Khaleda Zia won the election and became the country’s first female prime minister. She governed from 1991 to 1996, with parliamentary support from the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami. But stability proved elusive. In 1996, after months of protests, strikes and a disputed election, Sheikh Hasina won power and served as prime minister from 1996 to 2001. Her term was marked by intense political confrontation, both rhetorical and physical. In 2001, Khaleda Zia returned to power with a landslide victory and ruled from 2001 to 2006. Violence after the election killed dozens of Awami League supporters and members of minority communities, according to human rights groups. Also read: No matches in BPL today? On 21 August 2004, a grenade attack on an Awami League rally in Dhaka, aimed at Sheikh Hasina, killed at least 24 people and injured more than 300. Hasina survived but suffered permanent hearing damage. A prolonged legal process followed. In the elections held at the end of 2008, Sheikh Hasina won a landslide victory, beginning a long period in office that lasted until 2024. During this time, trials were concluded for those convicted of involvement in the 1975 coup that killed her father and much of her family. At least 12 former military officers were hanged, which Hasina described as historic justice. BNP supporters, however, accused her of selective retribution. Between 2013 and 2016, Hasina’s government intensified prosecutions through the International Crimes Tribunal for atrocities committed during the 1971 war of independence. Several senior Jamaat-e-Islami leaders were executed by hanging, along with prominent BNP figures such as Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed. These executions triggered widespread unrest. Protests, riots and petrol-bomb attacks erupted nationwide, leading to an estimated 200 to 500 deaths over several years, including civilians, police officers and protesters. https://www.wionews.com/videos/khaleda-zia-bnp-leader-and-ex-pm-passes-away-at-80-1767065656966/embed An election without the opposition In 2014, the BNP boycotted the general election, demanding a neutral caretaker government to oversee the vote. The collapse of Hasina’s rule In July and August 2024, student-led protests against Sheikh Hasina’s rule escalated into a mass uprising. Security forces responded with lethal force. Estimates of the death toll range from around 1,000 to 1,500, including protesters, bystanders and police. On 5 August 2024, Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh for India, and an interim administration took over. In the months that followed, Khaleda Zia was released from detention, and her convictions were overturned or suspended. Return of the son, and death of the mother As Khaleda Zia’s health worsened, her son Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh from Britain after years in exile. Just days after his return, Khaleda Zia died at the age of 80. This may mark the end of a rivalry that defined Bangladeshi politics for more than three decades.

Bangladesh violence: Student leader Motaleb Shikdar out of danger after gunshot injury

Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (Dec 22) blamed the Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus government for the rising hostility against Indians in the nation. Blaming the interim administration in Dhaka for worsening ties with India, she said that extremist groups have gotten emboldened under the Yunus administration. She also underscored India's status as Bangladesh's most dependable partner for decades, and said that the ties shared by New Delhi and Dhaka are deep-rooted. She insisted that the current tensions between the neighbours would subside once legitimate governance is restored. Also read | They want my 'political assassination': Hasina refuses return to Bangladesh
Hasina on strained India-Bangladesh ties
Placing recent developments in a regional context, Hasina addressed the strain in India-Bangladesh relations, including Dhaka's decision to summon the Indian envoy. She accused the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, of issuing hostile statements against India, failing to protect religious minorities and allowing extremist elements to shape foreign policy.India, she said, has been Bangladesh’s most dependable partner for decades, with ties rooted in history, geography and shared sacrifices.
India justified in its concern
India's concerns over the safety of its personnel are justified, she said, adding that any responsible government would protect diplomatic missions and prosecute those issuing threats instead of shielding what she described as "hooligans."Also read | Hindu rickshaw puller wearing red thread assaulted by mob in BangladeshHasina also raised alarm over growing anti-India sentiment and concerns about the safety of Indian diplomats in Bangladesh. She claimed extremists emboldened under the Yunus-led interim setup were driving hostility, alleging attacks on the Indian embassy, media organisations and minority communities. According to her, the interim administration had elevated radical elements to positions of authority while releasing convicted terrorists. On rhetoric around India's Siliguri Corridor, often called the "Chicken's Neck," Hasina described such statements as reckless and irresponsible. No serious leader, she said, would threaten a neighbour critical to Bangladesh’s trade and regional stability.
Hasina breaks silence on Osman Hadi killing
Referring to the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, Hasina said the incident symbolised a broader breakdown of law and order since her removal. Violence, she warned, has become routine under the interim government, destabilising Bangladesh internally and worrying neighbouring countries. She accused the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, of issuing hostile statements against India, failing to protect religious minorities and allowing extremist elements to shape foreign policy. India, she said, has been Bangladesh’s most dependable partner for decades, with ties rooted in history, geography and shared sacrifices. Sheikh Hasina, former Bangladesh PM sent to 21 years in prison on corruption charges

A Dhaka court on Thursday (November 27) has sentenced Bangladesh's former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, to 21 years in prison on charges of corruption. The verdict was delivered by Dhaka's Special Judge - 5, Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, who sentenced Hasina to 7 years in prison for each of three separate land fraud cases. The charges stem from allegations that Hasina and her family illegally allocated government plots in the Purbachal area of Dhaka. The court will announce its verdict in the remaining three cases on December 1. In addition to Sheikh Hasina's sentence, her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has been given a five-year prison sentence along with a fine of Tk 100,000. Her daughter, Saima Wazed Putul, was also sentenced to five years in prison. These legal proceedings are part of a broader investigation, initiated by Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in January, into alleged illegal land deals involving Sheikh Hasina and her family. However, Hasina and her family have denied all allegations of corruption in multiple public statements. Also Read: World's riskiest job?
