The ICC has penalised Pakistan women’s team captain Fatima Sana for her send-off to Indian opener Shafali Verma during their Asia Cup match in Dubai on Saturday (Sep 5). Sana has been fined 10 per cent of her match fee and handed a demerit point for her animated celebration after dismissing Verma in the first over of the run chase. It was Sana’s second offence in 24 months, taking her tally to two demerit points. &nbsp; The offence was a breach of Article 2.5 of the ICC's code of conduct for players and match officials, relating to "using language, actions or gestures which disparage, or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match". &nbsp;Chasing a mere 56, Verma took the attack to Pakistan’s new-ball bowler Sana for 10 runs in five balls, before a mistimed shot led to her dismissal, caught and bowled. Upbeat about dismissing the dangerous Verma, Sana pointed towards the dressing room as she celebrated the first wicket. POTM Shafali Verma reveals reason behind 'all-round performance' in Women's World Cup 2025 Final

India's win in Women's World Cup 2025 final over South Africa on Sunday (Nov 2) had very much to do with Shafali Verma's performance. The opener was not even in the original squad of the tournament before an injury to Pratika Rawal opened a door for her. Shafali played her first match of the tournament in the semi-final against Australia but was out cheaply. In the final though, she scored 85 and took two wickets - winning Player of the Match in the title clash. Shafali Verma’s comeback story in the 2025 Women’s World Cup final is truly inspirational. Dropped from the Indian squad earlier in the year due to inconsistent performances and personal challenges, including her father's health issues, Shafali was surprisingly recalled as an injury replacement for the semifinals. Seizing the opportunity, she delivered a career-best 87 runs off 78 balls against South Africa, igniting India’s innings with fearless aggression and smart strike rotation.

The tournament favourites will go into the knockout at DY Patil Stadium on a 15-game unbeaten streak in ODI World Cup matches, but standing between them and the decider is a wildly talented, at times unpredictable and ever-emotive India team.

ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025: Australia want to continue winning streak in semis

Shafali Verma has been approved as the replacement for injured Pratika Rawal as India prepare for the semi-final against defending champions Australia in Women's World Cup 2025. Rawal sustained the injury during India's last league stage match against Bangladesh which eventually was abandoned by rain. Rawal's injury has been a setback for India as the batter played an important role in taking India to semis with 308 runs in six innings - the second most for India and overall in the tournament. She's only behind her opening partner Smriti Mandhana (365) for most runs in the tournament.<h2>Shafali gets a chance</h2>Shafali, who is known for her attacking style of play, will be playing in her first WODI since October 2024. The batter hasn't been much successful in 50-over cricket and was dropped after a series of low scores. In 29 matches played, she has scored only 644 runs at an average of 23 with four fifties and best of 71 not out. Her last fifty-plus score in WODIs was against Sri Lanka Women in 2022. While she has consistently gotten starts in the last five ODIs played, Shefali hasn't been able to even 35 in any innings with a best of just 33.Also Read - <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ahead-of-australia-t20is-gambhir-backs-india-s-aggressive-style-and-says-he-doesn-t-aim-to-be-the-most-successful-coach-1761576683047">Ahead of Australia T20Is, Gambhir backs India's aggressive style and says he doesn't 'aim to be the most successful coach'</a><h2>What it means for India?</h2>Australia have already beaten India in the league stage of the tournament. Having impressed during scouting camps, she brings youthful energy and talent to the squad. Her inclusion, along with players like Nandini Kashyap, adds depth to the team and keeps the competition for places fierce. Challenges and new venues The upcoming WPL season will be played across four venues, including new locations like Vadodara and Lucknow. The team is prepared to adapt to different conditions, having trained on various types of pitches in Pune to ensure flexibility in their approach. Given the quality of wickets seen in past tournaments, the expectation is for high-scoring, competitive matches. Impact of international retirement on Lanning’s leadership Lanning’s decision to retire from international cricket has given her a new perspective on leadership. With more time to reflect, she focuses on mentoring younger players, sharing her vast experience, and helping them manage the pressures of professional cricket. She relishes the opportunity to guide the team and contribute to Delhi’s success in the WPL. The overseas addition: Sarah Bryce Delhi Capitals have added Scotland’s Sarah Bryce to the squad, recognizing her potential as an overseas player who could make a difference. Her experience in international cricket and leagues like the Women’s Big Bash makes her a valuable asset. She will be competing for the wicketkeeping spot, adding depth to the team’s overseas contingent. Trump cards for the season When asked to pick key players who could be game-changers, the management emphasized the collective strength of the squad. While Verma stands out due to her explosive batting, the team’s success hinges on contributions from multiple players across different positions. The depth in the squad ensures that every player has the potential to step up and win matches. No home advantage, no problem Despite not playing in their home ground this season, Delhi Capitals are confident that the quality of crowds and atmosphere across venues will provide ample motivation. While home support is always beneficial, the team is focused on performing well regardless of the conditions and ensuring they adapt to different challenges. Delhi Capitals begin the new WPL season with confidence, backed by strong performances in past editions and a well-rounded squad. With experienced leaders, emerging young talents, and a commitment to continuous improvement, they are well-positioned to compete for the title.

Apart from Shafali, Smriti Mandhana also hit 149 in India's first innings while Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh chipped in with a fifty each.

Proteas Women scored 266 in the first innings and were asked to follow on. In their second innings, SA Women scored 373, thanks to hundreds by Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus. Speaking after the match, India coach Amol Mazumadar said: "Luus and Wolvaardt played really well. Credit to them, but hats off to our girls as well. They stuck it out, fought hard and every wicket was earnt. Credit to every single player, even the reserve players."

Skipper Kaur also agreed with the coach and acknowledged that it was a hard win.

"It was not easy. They batted really well. They did not give us an easy win and we had to work hard for it. Credit goes to Smriti and Shafali who set up a platform for us. Everyone in the team, they contributed well with the bat. The way we fielded, it was not easy to field for so many overs. Hats off to our bowlers, especially our spinners. They kept bowling and had that belief that they could take those wickets to win us the game. All of them," said Kaur.

The two teams will now have a three T20I series starting Friday (Jul 5).

Shafali Verma, Sneh Rana star in India Women's 10-wicket win over South Africa Women in one-off Test

India’s Shafali Verma scripted a unique chapter in women’s cricket on Friday (June 28) against South Africa women after she scored the fastest double hundred in the format. Shafali, playing in her fifth Test match scored 205 off 197 balls before getting out, but made sure she wrote her name in the history books. She also became the second Indian woman to score a double hundred in the Test format after Mithali Raj, who did so in August 2002 against England in Taunton.

<h2>Shafali scripts history</h2>

Having decided to bat first after winning the toss, the decision proved to be right for India Women at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The opening pair of Smriti Mandaha (149) and Shafali put on 292 runs for the first opening wicket before the former was dismissed. However, 20-year-old Shafali continued her superb form to bring the fastest Test double hundred in the red-ball format. It took 194 balls for the Indian opener to reach the feat and claim the record to her name.

Her innings consisted of 23 fours and 8 huge sixes before she was the victim of poor running between the wickets in the 75th over and was run out. In doing so she also joined Mithali’s record of scoring a double hundred, when she amassed 214 against England. It took almost 22 years for another Indian woman to score the double ton, while she only missed out on breaking Mithali's record by 10 runs before being run out.

<h2>What happened on Day 1?</h2>

Batting first, India women ended Day 1 at 525/4 in 98 overs with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (42) and wicketkeeper batter Richa Ghosh (43) in the middle. The pair has put up 75 runs for the fifth wicket and will be eager to add more on Day 2 of the Test match. Jemimah Rodrigues with 55 runs also made a valuable addition to the score. India will now be looking to stamp their authority on the contest.

<h2>India start on winning note</h2>

Needing to register a win after a poor show in the ODI series, India got off to a perfect start with the win. With 142 runs to chase,&nbsp;Shafali and Smriti stitched a partnership of 137 runs for the opening wicket which laid the foundation for the win. Shafali’s innings of 64 runs consisted of 6 fours and 3 sixes,&nbsp;while she was hitting&nbsp;at a strike rate of almost 150. On the other hand, her partner Smriti scored 54 off 52, which&nbsp;consisted 7 fours and a six. Jemimah Rodrigues remained unbeaten on 6 as India emerged victorious at the DY Patil Stadium.

IND-W vs AUS-W: Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma help India draw first blood in T20I series with one-sided win

After their batting collapse in the first innings, Shafali Verma's three wickets in the last over turned the game in India's way, helping visitors clinch a thrilling 8-run victory over Bangladesh in the second T20I of the three-match series here at Shere Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday. India defend their lowest total against Bangladesh to clinch a thriller as Shafali Verma picked up three wickets and gave away just one run in the final over. Shafali and Deepti Sharma starred with the ball for India as they claimed three wickets respectively. It was Sultana Khatun (3-21) and Fahima Khatun (2-16) who was the star for Bangladesh and rattled India's batting order with stunning spells of bowling, restricting the visitors to 95/8 in 20 overs.

Defending a target of 96, India got off to a fine start in the second over Minnu Mani removed Shamima Sultana for 5. It did not take long for Deepti Sharma to show her fine spin bowling as she claimed the wicket of Shathi Rani in the third over of the game. The duo of Murshida Khatun and Nigar Sultana tried to handle the charge for their team against the fine Indian bowling. However, in the seventh over Bareddy Anusha claimed her maiden T20I wicket as she dismissed Murshida Khatun for 4.

The right-handed batter Ritu Moni then came out to bat but the latter could not do much as she was dismissed by Minnu Mani in the 8th over of the game.
Deepti then bagged her second wicket of the match as she removed Shorna Akter for 7 in the 15th over. However, the captain, Nigar Sultana, who was helped by a big slice of luck, continued to play and focused on extending the game. As Bangladesh drew nearer, she held her head high, pushed the singles about, and occasionally scored a boundary. However, her dismissal in the 19th overturned the game India's way.

Indian bowlers stretched the action into the last over as Bangladesh needed 10 runs off 6 balls. In the final over Nahida Akter fell prey to the fine bowling of Shafali Verma on the second ball while Fahima Khatun went back to the pavilion after the India star caught and bowled the batter on the 4th delivery. Shafali then dismissed Marufa Akter for zero and bundled out Bangladesh for 87, clinching an 8-run victory. Earlier, India's batting struggled against Bangladesh bowlers as they managed to post only 95/8 in the second T20I match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Tuesday. India elected to bat first.

WPL 2023: Shafali hits blazing fifty, Kapp takes five-for as Delhi Capitals rout Gujarat Giants by 10 wickets

Delhi Capitals got off to a best possible start in the maiden edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Playing their first match against the star-studded Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, Delhi’s opening pair of Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma unleashed an onslaught on the RCB bowlers hitting them to all parts of the ground.

Both openers kept finding gaps at will and became the first pair to register a hundred-plus stand in the WPL. While Lanning looked as composed as ever during her excellent knock of 72 off 43 that included 14 glorious boundaries, Shafali lived up to her hype of being an aggressor as she smoked a brilliant 84 off 45 balls, hitting ten fours and four sixes.

England’s Heather Knight provided the breakthrough in the 15th over picking up both openers in the space of three balls. South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp and India’s very own Jemimah Rodrigues then took the onus on them and helped the side cross 200, eventually scoring 223 for two – bettering last night Mumbai’s total of 207.

Meanwhile, the chase began well for Bangalore with openers Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine churning out fours and keeping the run-rate intact. After Devine’s wicket, Mandhana soon followed her after her scoring 35 off 23 balls hitting five boundaries and a six. England’s Alice Capsey provided Delhi with two crucial wickets before USA’s Tara Norris tore into RCB’s middle-order, claiming four wickets in her first spell of three overs.

Although Knight brought in some excitement with her quickfire 34, Australia’s Megan Schutt contributed with a 19-ball 30 that helped RCB cross the 150-mark.&nbsp;However, Norris hogged all limelight with the maiden five-for in the WPL as Delhi restricted Bangalore to 163 for eight in 20 overs, winning their first match by 60 runs.

WPL 2023: DC-W vs RCB-W - Shafali Verma, Meg Lanning star with bat as Delhi beat Challengers by 60 runs

As we approach the start of the maiden edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), everyone’s looking forward to watching Delhi Capitals get into action. Led by the Australian Meg Lanning, Delhi has some firework in its batting in the Indian duo of Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues. While it was Lanning’s Australia that lifted the recently-concluded T20 World Cup in South Africa, India’s Jemimah also made headlines for her star performances in crunch games. Her unbeaten 53 against Pakistan helped India win the opener by seven wickets, whereas, she scored a fighting 43 off 24 balls against Australia in the semis too, which India lost by five runs.

On the other hand, young and attacking opener Shafali Verma, who made history by leading India to its maiden U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup title in January, will also join forces with Meg and Jemimah at Delhi Capitals for the inaugural edition. Verma, who had a quiet T20 WC with the bat, is a force to reckon with in world cricket, something her newly-appointed captain Lanning is thoroughly aware of. Talking highly of these two, Lanning, who is a veteran captain with five ICC World Cups to her name, said she’s excited to work with both.

Speaking about Rodrigues first, Lanning said she is a vibrant character and other than being a great batter, she has some good leadership skills too.

“I'm excited to work with Jemi (Jemimah Rodrigues). She is a very vibrant character, brings a lot of energy and she is obviously a great player and has good leadership quality as well. I certainly will be leaning on her a fair bit in terms of bringing the squad together and getting to know people and on-field stuff too,” Lanning said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Whereas, for Verma, the experienced Aussie captain showered some praises saying the young right-hander is nothing short of an incredible player having played some eyebrow-raising cricket already. Lanning added saying that Shafali has a good understanding of the game, and that she cannot wait to stand at the other end and watch Shafali tore apart the bowling line up of other teams.

“Shafali is an incredible talent and has already played some incredible cricket. A lot of understanding of the game and having an immediate impact on the game comes with experience. She's getting there. I can't wait to stand at the other end and watch her whack other teams around the park instead of setting the field which I have done for a few years. She's learning a lot, she's learning very quickly and she's a super talent. I can't wait to play alongside her and see her dominate,” Lanning added.

I can't wait to stand at the other end and watch her whack other teams around the park instead of setting the field which I have done for a few years. She's learning a lot, she's learning very quickly and she's a super talent. I can't wait to play alongside her and see her dominate,” Lanning added. #YehHaiNayiDilli ki first-ever #TATAWPL Squad Photo ❤💙#CapitalsUniverse pic.twitter.com/3S9lKcEX71 — Delhi Capitals (@DelhiCapitals) March 2, 2023 × Delhi Capitals will play its first match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 5th at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
