This comes on the heels of reports suggesting that the United States, since late spring, has quietly restricted Ukraine from using American-supplied long-range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to strike targets inside Russia. America has also reportedly restricted Ukraine's use of all foreign technology that uses American intelligence and components. The same restrictions also cover Britain's Storm Shadow cruise missiles, which rely on American targeting data.Watch | Russia Unveils “Sea Terminator”: Hypersonic Missile Warship Targets Subs & Aircraft Carriershttps://www.wionews.com/videos/russia-unveils-sea-terminator-hypersonic-missile-warship-targets-subs-aircraft-carriers-wion-1756189742371/embed

US President Trump says he had another "good conversation" with his Russian counterpart. He has also revealed the reason President Vladimir Putin wasn't meeting Volodomyr Zelensky. Here's all you need to know.

US President Donald Trump on Monday (Aug 25) said that he spoke again with Russian President Vladimir Putin, days after his Washington meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders. Trump was last known to have called Putin on August 18, during his White House talks with Zelensky and European counterparts. Asked by reporters if there had been further contact, Trump confirmed: “Yes, I have.” After his August 18 call, Trump announced that Putin had agreed to a direct meeting with Zelensky, but Moscow has since denied such plans. Pressed on why Putin was reluctant, Trump replied bluntly: “Because he doesn’t like him.” Good conversation with Putin When asked about how the latest bout of communication with Putin went, Trump told reporters, "Every conversation I have with him is a good conversation," but said that he was "very angry" about the fact that after good conversations, "a bomb is loaded up into Kyiv or someplace". US Vice President JD Vance has said Russia will be part of future talks on Ukraine’s security guarantees once the war ends. Speaking to NBC’s Meet the Press, he insisted that negotiations are making progress following President Donald Trump’s meeting with Vladimir Putin earlier this month. “We believe we’ve already seen some significant concessions from both sides, just in the last few weeks,” Vance said. Also read: ‘For today’s war and tomorrow’s security’: Ukraine’s new Flamingo missile is the gift that will keep on givingThe interview came after a Russian missile hit an electronics factory in western Ukraine owned by a US company. Several workers were injured. Asked if he was “enraged” by the strike, Vance replied, “I don’t like it. But this is a war, and this is why we want to stop the killing. The Russians have done a lot of things that we don’t like. A lot of civilians have died. We’ve condemned that stuff from the get-go.” He then criticised former president Joe Biden, saying Trump had “done more to apply pressure and to apply economic leverage to the Russians” than Biden ever had.
Trump hopeful peace deal could be weeks away
Trump told reporters on Friday that a possible deal could take shape soon. “I think over the next two weeks, we’re going to find out which way it’s going to go,” he said. Vance also said setbacks such as missile strikes should not be seen as permanent roadblocks. “We’re going to eventually be successful, or we’ll hit a brick wall,” he added.
Pressure without troops on the ground
Vance repeated that Trump would not send US forces to enforce any deal. “The president has been very clear. There are not going to be boots on the ground in Ukraine,” he said. Instead, he pointed to “aggressive economic leverage,” including secondary tariffs on India to restrict Russia’s oil revenues. On Russia’s part in post-war security arrangements, Vance said, “We’re not talking about security guarantees until after the war has come to a close. Also read: ‘For today’s war and tomorrow’s security’: Ukraine’s new Flamingo missile is the gift that will keep on giving The interview came after a Russian missile hit an electronics factory in western Ukraine owned by a US company. Trump hopeful peace deal could be weeks away Trump told reporters on Friday that a possible deal could take shape soon. “I think over the next two weeks, we’re going to find out which way it’s going to go,” he said. Vance also said setbacks such as missile strikes should not be seen as permanent roadblocks. “We’re going to eventually be successful, or we’ll hit a brick wall,” he added. Pressure without troops on the ground Vance repeated that Trump would not send US forces to enforce any deal. And, of course, the Russians are going to be a part of the conversation about bringing that war to a close.” He claimed Moscow had already accepted that Ukraine would retain territorial integrity and that it would not be able to install a “puppet regime in Kyiv.” “Have they made every concession? Russia has accused Ukraine of launching overnight drone attacks that caused a fire at a nuclear power plant in the western Kursk region. The incident occurred as Ukraine marked 34 years of independence, further escalating tensions between the two nations.

Russia claims to have intercepted 95 Ukrainian drones overnight in one of the largest reported aerial attacks of the conflict.

Ukraine revealed a new Ukrainian cruise missile, the FP-5 “Flamingo”, on August 17, and since then, it has been getting attention on a global level, seen as a deterrent to Russia amid the ongoing war. Here's all you need to know about Ukraine's Flamingo:
How big is the Flamingo missile?
The FP-5 Flamingo is the heaviest missile system Ukraine has ever built. Fire Point says it has:• A wingspan of six metres• A launch weight of 6,000 kilograms• A payload capacity of 1,150 kilogramsThis makes it far larger and more powerful than earlier Ukrainian drones or mini-cruise missiles. Also read: ‘Big d*** energy’: Ukraine’s new 'Flamingo' missile can strike 3,000km into Russia - Here’s why it matters
Why does it look like the V-1 rocket?
The top-mounted engine gives it a resemblance to the German V-1 “flying bomb” from the Second World War. But that is where the similarities stop. The V-1 used a basic pulse jet. The Flamingo instead runs on a Motor Sich AI-25TL turbofan engine, the same type used in Aero L-39 trainer jets. This engine explains how the Flamingo can reach a range of 3,000 kilometres, far beyond Ukraine’s existing strike weapons.
How fast and accurate is the Flamingo missile?
Fire Point says the missile can travel at speeds of around 950 km/h. This likely refers to its top velocity near the end of flight, though its cruising speed is a little slower. For guidance, the Flamingo relies on GPS-assisted inertial navigation. It does not carry more advanced systems like terrain-matching or infrared seekers. This keeps production simple, but it also means a reported accuracy (CEP) of around 14 metres.
Production goals and limits
At present, Fire Point produces about one missile per day, roughly 30 per month. By year-end, the company claims it could increase this sevenfold, reaching over 200 per month, or 2,500 annually. The main challenge is the engine. While most components can be scaled up, production depends on Motor Sich or other suppliers being able to deliver enough turbofan engines. Even if the target is ambitious, keeping production steady at 30 to 50 missiles per month would still give Ukraine a strong arsenal of heavy cruise missiles.
How destructive is the Flamingo?
The FP-5 has two major advantages over Ukraine’s current systems:• Penetration power: Its high terminal velocity and weight mean it can pierce structures before detonation.• Bigger blast radius: With a warhead of more than 1,000 kilograms, it can devastate both hardened military structures and softer targets like oil refineries.
What does this mean for Ukraine’s future?
While the Flamingo’s immediate value is clear for today’s war, its long-term importance could be even greater. If Ukraine can mass-produce thousands of Flamingo-type missiles, it would gain a powerful deterrent. In a post-war Europe, such an arsenal could make Russia think twice before any future aggression. Ukraine’s Flamingo is not just a missile for today’s battlefield, it could be the country’s insurance policy for tomorrow.

‘Big d*** energy’: Ukraine’s new 'Flamingo' missile can strike 3,000km into Russia - Here’s why it matters

Kyiv’s drone campaign is starting to bite, with Moscow now facing fuel shortages and rising petrol prices. According to a CNN tally, Ukrainian drones have struck at least ten major Russian energy facilities in August alone. Ukraine’s intelligence service says the refineries hit account for more than 44 million tonnes of products annually, over 10% of Russia’s refining capacity. Also read: Hegseth ousts Intel chief after leak reveals US strikes barely delayed Iran’s nuclear programme, contradicting Trump’s ‘obliteration’ claim
How many energy sites have been hit?
Among the biggest targets was the Lukoil refinery in Volgograd, the largest in southern Russia. The plant was hit again on 19 August. Another large refinery in Saratov was also struck, while fires burned for days after a drone hit a refinery in the Rostov region.
Is Russia facing fuel shortages?
Petrol shortages have been reported in several Russian regions and in occupied Crimea. Sergey Aksyonov, the Kremlin-installed governor of Crimea, blamed “logistics issues” and insisted that Moscow was working to stabilise supplies. But residents tell a different story. An activist from the pro-Ukrainian Yellow Ribbon group in Crimea wrote on Telegram that petrol had disappeared from stations and added, “The understanding that this is the result of the good drones work on the Russian economy does not allow me to be sad.”
What’s happening to prices?
Despite subsidies, prices at the pump are rising. Wholesale petrol costs in St Petersburg have jumped nearly 10% this month and about 50% since the start of the year, CNN reported. Much of this is being passed on to consumers, with Russia’s far east among the hardest hit. Sergey Frolov, a managing partner at NEFT Research, told the Russian newspaper Kommersant, “Unfortunately, our forecast is unfavourable for now, we will most likely have to wait at least another month for prices to fall.” The Russian government has already banned petrol exports in an effort to contain the crisis, but this has instead boosted crude oil exports.
How is Ukraine using drones in the war?
Ukraine has shifted its focus towards long-range strikes using drones, missiles and sabotage. Its military claims such attacks have caused $74 billion in damage this year, with nearly 40% of strikes reaching 500 kilometres inside Russia. While these figures cannot be independently verified, CNN notes there is extensive visual evidence of destroyed refineries, pumping stations and storage facilities. Sanctions make repairs slower, and Russia has even turned to Belarus to cover shortages. Belarusian state-owned refiner Belneftekhim confirmed a surge in Russian demand for its oil products in recent weeks.
What about Europe?
Ukraine has also targeted Russian oil exports. Last week, drones struck the Druzhba pipeline that supplies oil to Hungary and Slovakia. Both governments complained to the EU, warning that Kyiv’s actions hurt them more than Moscow. US President Donald Trump also weighed in, telling Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in a handwritten note that he was “very angry” about the disruption, according to CNN.

Are Ukrainian drones pushing Russia into a fuel crisis? How Ukraine is choking Russia’s energy lifeline

Tensions between Washington and Moscow are escalating again as Donald Trump threatens massive sanctions or tariffs on Russia due to stalled peace efforts in Ukraine. This comes after Trump’s recent Alaska meeting with Vladimir Putin and amid growing frustration over Russia’s strike on a U.S.-linked factory in Ukraine.

Trump threatens sanctions on Russia as Putin-Zelensky meeting stalls

As the Russia-Ukraine war continues despite Trump's pressure to stop the killings, recent satellite images provided by Planet Labs show that Russia is turning the parts of Ukraine it occupies into a giant military base and a potential launch pad for future aggression, Ukraine's local Kyiv Independent reported. It noted that Russia's forces in the occupied territories, particularly in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, are turning civilian infrastructures into bases where they can let their soldiers stay. From this location, they will also transport ammunition and launch their drones from closer than ever to Ukrainian-held territory, according to a Kyiv Independent report. Donetsk International Airport is one of the finest examples of this. As per the satellite images, a sudden buildup on the foundations of the old airport. This airport was one of the last holdouts for Ukrainian soldiers in Donetsk until Russian-backed partisans overtook it at the end of 2014. Also read: Trump's efforts in vain? Even as he leads a frenzy of diplomacy to end the Ukraine-Russia war, US President Donald Trump appeared to have suggested that Ukraine should be allowed to attack Russia, as a country cannot win a war without going on the offensive, in his opinion. He made this suggestion in a social media post on Thursday (Aug 21), in which he mainly criticised his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden for not giving offensive weapons to Ukraine.
What did Trump say about ‘allowing Ukraine to play offensive’?
Trump, in the Truth Social post, said Ukraine should take a more aggressive military stance. "Biden would not let Ukraine FIGHT BACK, only DEFEND," he noted."It is very hard, if not impossible, to win a war without attacking an invader’s country," Trump posted. He used a sports analogy to explain it. "It’s like a great team in sports that has a fantastic defence, but is not allowed to play offensive. He had earlier opposed Ukraine attacking inside Russia, calling such moves escalatory. Artificial Intelligence chatbots these days can answer anything for you. I wanted to see if they can solve one of the most complex issues in today's world, the Russia-Ukraine war. I found most answers to be similar, exposing the biases and sources of these chatbots. And I found a key gap in all the answers. Let me break it down for you.
I started with Gemini, and here's what it said on resolving Ukraine war
Gemini, the chatbot owned by Google parent Alphabet, called Ukraine war "deeply complex, shaped by long-standing security, territorial, and political disputes," (as if I didn't know that). It said peace will need to address five core issues:
1. Territorial disputes:
Ukraine is seeking the return to its 1991 borders and rejects territorial concessions, while some proposals suggest land-for-peace compromises.
2. Security guarantees:
Ukraine seeks strong Western-backed protections against future aggression by Russia. Full NATO membership for Ukraine is unlikely, but alternatives include NATO-like arrangements, whereas Russia opposes any NATO ties for Ukraine, given its own national security concerns.
3. Ceasefire:
A pause in war is a first step, but timing and conditions are still disputed. While Ukraine favours an immediate ceasefire, Russia continues fighting even during negotiations.
4. Sanctions and legal issues:
Western sanctions on Russia are central to peace talks, and a deal will have to balance sanctions relief with upholding international law regarding Russia’s occupation.
5. Demilitarisation and neutrality:
Russia wants Ukraine to stay out of NATO and adopt armed neutrality, which some say would be similar to Switzerland.
What are the obstacles for peace?
Mutual distrust due to failed past agreements like the Minsk Accords, and conflicting goals are the impediments. Russia wants control and limits to Ukraine’s Western alignment, while Kyiv insists on full sovereignty and territorial integrity. Domestic politics in all involved nations are shaping public opinion and negotiation limits.https://www.wionews.com/videos/russia-ukraine-war-war-spurs-ukrainian-startups-producing-missiles-drones-1755836068435/embed
What did other chatbots say about resolving the Ukraine war?
After checking with Gemini, I went to four other chatbots: ChatGPT, Grok, Perplexity AI and DeepSeek AI.
