An Indian national fighting alongside Russian forces was captured by Ukraine earlier this month, according to Kyiv Independent. The 63rd Mechanized Brigade said in a statement on October 7 that a man named Majoti Sahil Mohamed Hussein from the Indian city of Morbi in Gujarat was in their custody. After he came across the Ukrainian forces, he surrendered and told them that he "didn't want to fight." The 22-year-old had come to Russia as a student, he said in a video recorded by the brigade. However, he was sentenced to seven years in a Russian prison on drug-related charges. To escape the punishment, Russian officials offered him a contract with the Russian military, he said. "I didn't want to stay in prison, so I signed a contract for the 'special military operation' (Russia's term for its full-scale invasion of Ukraine). Russia-Ukraine: President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of using a "shadow fleet" of oil tankers to launch and control drones targeting European cities amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Russia-Ukraine: Zelensky Blames Russian Shadow Fleet for Drone Attacks on Europe

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday (September 28) that Russia launched around 500 drones and over 40 missiles in an overnight attack on Ukraine's Kyiv. He also added that four people were killed and civilian infrastructure was damaged. Kyiv came under heavy drone and missile bombardment in what independent monitors said was one of the biggest Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital and surrounding region since the full-scale war began. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that the city came under a "massive attack", with a five-storey building partially destroyed due to debris from a drone. Zelensky also added that the main targets of the Russian strikes were Kyiv and the region, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa regions. Slamming Russia, Zelensky said that he wants to keep fighting and killing. He added that the Kremlin benefits from continuing this war and terror “as long as it earns revenue from energy and operates a shadow fleet.” He added that those who want peace “must back President Trump’s efforts and halt any Russian imports.” “This vile attack came virtually as the close of UN General Assembly week, and this is exactly how Russia declares its true position. Moscow wants to keep fighting and killing, and it deserves the toughest pressure from the world,” Zelensky slammed Russia in a post on X.

NATO action after Russian strike on Ukraine
A NATO spokesperson said that it has “enhanced vigilance” in the Baltic. This comes after the Danish defence ministry said that “drones have been observed at several of Danish defence facilities.” NATO spokesperson Martin O'Donnell said that reinforced measures "include multiple intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platforms and at least one air-defence frigate" in the region to the west of Russia. O'Donnell said NATO's top brass "have been in constant contact with Danish leaders" about the drone incidents. On the other hand, British Defence Secretary said that drones will be deployed to create a “drone wall” to protect NATO from Russian aggression. Meanwhile, the Polish armed forces said that Poland and NATO scrambled their jets in the face of a possible incursion into its airspace. The Polish military said in a post on X that, as Russia is carrying out long-range aviation strikes on Ukraine, Polish and allied aircraft have begun operating in our airspace. The military termed the action as “preventive,” citing past incursions. According to Flightradar24, Poland's southeastern cities of Lublin and Rzeszów were closed until at least 0400 GMT due to “unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security.” Most recently, Denmark said drones were flown over its airports.

President Zelensky said Russia launched 500 drones and 40+ missiles on Kyiv, killing four and damaging infrastructure in one of the largest attacks since the war began. He urged global action, accusing Moscow of prolonging war for profit and called for support to halt Russian energy imports.

Russia on Friday (Sep 26) slammed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for making “irresponsible” threats against Moscow’s top officials. This comes after Zelensky warned that Ukraine could target the Kremlin if it doesn’t stop its invasion, and Russian officials should check for bomb shelters. Earlier this month, Russia launched its first attack on a Ukrainian government complex since the three-and-a-half-year war after Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine.Responding to Zelensky’s comments, the Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, “Zelensky is clearly continuing his desperate efforts. That's why he's issuing threats left and right, which is quite irresponsible.”
What did Zelensky say?
In an interview with Axios published on Thursday (Sep 25), Zelensky said that Russian officials should know where their bomb shelters are. He added that if Russia does not stop the war, they will need it.“They have to know where their bomb shelters are,” Zelensky said. “They need it. If they will not stop the war, they will need it in any case.”Zelensky also responded to criticism from US President Donald Trump over the indefinite suspension of elections in wartime Ukraine, saying that he would not seek to remain in power once peace is achieved.“My goal is to finish the war,” not to continue to run for office, he said. He further added that Ukraine would not target Russian civilians because “we are not terrorists.”He stated that Ukraine hopes to obtain more powerful weapons from the US, which he would use to strike deep inside Russia. He did not name the weapon. However, he indicated that Ukraine hopes to obtain a more powerful US weapon, which he did not name, to threaten strikes deep inside Russia.“If we will have such long-distance weapons from the United States, we will use it,” he said.

‘Zelensky continuing his desperate efforts’: Russia calls Ukrainian president’s threat to target Kremlin ‘irresponsible’

Sometimes, war is good for business. American oil and gas firms would certainly agree, in the context of the Russia-Ukraine war. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Europe rushed to cut its historic dependence on Russian oil and gas. One of the biggest beneficiaries of this situation has been the United States. Fueled by the “Drill, Baby, Drill” approach on fossil fuels championed by President Donald Trump, American producers and marketers have found a new ‘gold rush’ amid the ruins of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Here is that story:
Russia-Ukraine war and the energy shockwave that helped the US
Before the war, Russia accounted for approximately 31 per cent of the European Union's crude oil imports and nearly 45 per cent of its natural gas imports. But after the war, bans on seaborne Russian crude oil (effective December 2022), restrictions on refined oil products (early 2023), and voluntary reductions in Russian gas imports left Europe scrambling to fill a massive energy gap.Enter the United States, whose shale boom and ever-growing LNG export infrastructure positioned it as the top replacement supplier for Europe. The result? American crude oil exports to Europe surged from roughly 0.6 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2021 to nearly 1.85 million b/d by 2023. American LNG export volumes to Europe rose from about 2.4 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in 2021 to over 7 Bcf/d by 2023, making the US Europe’s largest LNG supplier.By mid-2025, Europe had reduced Russian energy imports by nearly 89 per cent, dramatically weakening Russia’s fossil fuel revenue stream, which fell by around 8 per cent year-on-year to nearly €847 billion since 2022.Also read: IT'S ALL GAS: Why Trump schools Europe on Russian oil only, but is silent on gas sales to Europe that quietly funds Russia
Fishing in troubled waters: American firms find new markets in a war-torn world
The success of ‘Drill, Baby, Drill,’ Trump’s hallmark policy to ramp up American fossil fuel production, depends on one critical factor: Buyers. Drill Baby, Drill: How Trump’s Russia-Ukraine war mediation helps US oil deals on both sides

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday (Sep 24) addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), a day after US President Donald Trump delivered a strong speech. As he began his address, the Ukrainian president said that there are no security guarantees without friends and weapons. Stating that Ukraine, like all other United Nations members, wants peace in the world, but that is not possible without a ceasefire. Stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin's "madness continues", he criticised the country for refusing a ceasefire. Urging the UN members to end trade with Russia, Zelensky accused Russia of violating international rules again and again and highlighted that shelling has not stopped, even in areas near nuclear facilities. Read More | White House claims UN staffers tried to humiliate Trump with 'escalatorgate' at UNGA; UN replies Zelensky began his speech saying, “If a nation wants peace, it still has to work on weapons... weapons decide who survives.” Slamming Russia for its recent air incursions in countries like Romania, Estonia and Poland, Zelensky highlighted that it is important for Europe to defend itself. Finland’s president, Alexander Stubb, has said new security guarantees for Ukraine would commit European countries to take on Russia directly if Moscow attacked again in the future. “Security guarantees in essence are a deterrent. That deterrent has to be plausible and in order for it to be plausible it has to be strong,” Stubb told the Guardian ahead of the UN general assembly. He stressed the guarantees would only apply after a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, but insisted Moscow would have no influence over their shape. “Russia has absolutely no say in the sovereign decisions of an independent nation state … So for me it’s not an issue will Russia agree or not.
