Russia-Ukraine War: Ukraine Says It Needs 172 Million Dollars Every Single Day to Keep Fighting

Ukrainian drones struck one of Russia’s largest oil refineries, sparking a fire, Russian officials said on Sunday. The overnight strike on the Kirishi refinery, in Ruthe country's northwestern Leningrad region, follows weeks of Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. The facility produces close to 17.7 million metric tons per year, or 355,000 barrels per day, of crude. Regional Gov. Alexander Drozdenko said three drones were downed overnight in the Kirishi area, with falling debris sparking a fire at the facility. He said no one was injured, and the blaze has been put out.

Russia's 'largest drone attack' on Ukraine

In one of the most extensive air assaults of the conflict, Russia launched over 800 drones and 13 missiles against Ukraine overnight, causing a fire in the main Ukrainian government building in central Kyiv and resulting in at least three deaths, including a baby, according to Ukrainian officials on Sunday (Aug 7). Russia stated that its attack involved aircraft, drones, missiles, and artillery targeting Ukrainian weapons factories, military transport infrastructure, airfields, and ammunition depots. This strike occurred just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin invited Ukrainian President Zelensky to Moscow for negotiations. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, who had previously claimed he could end the Russia-Ukraine war swiftly, once again expressed his commitment to helping resolve what he called the “deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two.”

Russia's largest airstrike on Kyiv, hitting a government building and killing three, drew global condemnation. Zelensky urged action against the Kremlin. Leaders like Macron, Ursula von der Leyen, and Tusk slammed Putin, vowing continued support for Ukraine and tighter sanctions on Moscow.

Trump to impose sanctions on Moscow? Here’s what US president said after massive Russian attack on Ukraine

In one of its largest air attacks of the war, Russia fired over 800 drones, 13 missiles on Ukraine overnight, setting the main building of the Ukrainian government on fire in central Kyiv and killing at least three people in the capital, including an infant, Ukrainian officials said on Sunday (Aug 7). Russia said that it had used aircraft, drones, missiles and artillery to strike Ukrainian armaments factories, transport infrastructure used by the Ukrainian army, airfields and arsenals. The attack comes days after Russian President Vladimir Putin asked Zelensky to come to Moscow to hold talks. On the other hand, US President Donald Trump, who once claimed he would end the Russia-Ukraine war in a day, reiterated again that he would help bring an end to the “deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the drone and missile barrage also caused damage across the north, south and east of the country, including the cities of Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih and Odesa, as well as in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions. Zelensky emphasized that such attacks, especially at a time when diplomatic efforts could have progressed, are deliberate crimes meant to prolong the war. He urged the international community, particularly referencing commitments made in Paris and warnings from Washington, to uphold sanctions and deliver promised air defense systems. In a post on X, he said, “Such killings now, when real diplomacy could have already begun long ago, are a deliberate crime and a prolongation of the war. It has been repeatedly said in Washington that sanctions will follow a refusal to talk. We must implement everything that was agreed in Paris.” Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said it was the first time in the war that the main government building in Kyiv was hit. Ukrainian air force said that Ukrainian defence units downed 751 drones and four missiles. This is the highest number of drones Russia has used to attack the country since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, as per Reuters.

Europe pledges 'reassurance force' for Ukraine, but Russia says no
French President Emmanuel Macron met Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris for a meeting this week, and they also spoke to US President Trump. Macron and other European countries are a part of the ‘coalition of the willing’ that will ensure Ukraine's security gurantees if peace deal is reached. Over two dozen European countries have pledged to be part of a 'reassurance force' to safeguard Ukraine's security after any peace accord with Russia is struck. The French president opined that a ‘reassurance force’ for Ukraine is a key pillar of the security guarantees, and it will be aimed at deterring Moscow from ever again attacking its neighbour. However, Russia has outrightly rejected the prospect of the deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine.

Russia launched one of its largest attacks on Ukraine hitting Kyiv’s government building and killing at least three. Ukrainian President Zelensky called the strikes a deliberate prolongation of the war and urged international support for air defence and sanctions.

Donald Trump admitted his summit with Vladimir Putin failed to secure a Ukraine ceasefire, saying he “thought I had it done.” He repeated disputed claims of ending seven other wars.

US President Donald Trump seemingly admitted his high-profile summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin did not produce the ceasefire he had hoped for in Ukraine. Speaking in the Oval Office to Reagan Reese of the Daily Caller, Trump said he believed he had been close to securing a deal but came away empty-handed. “We’re talking about a lot of lives. We’re not talking about something that I started. I inherited this war. And all I’m trying to do is put out the flame, you know. And I thought I had it done,” Trump said. Claim that he “ended” other wars The US president repeated his claim that he had previously ended “seven wars,” despite doubts raised by multiple reports. “I did it with wars that were tougher than this in terms of nobody. So three of those wars are going on for more than 30 years, and I got them all done. This war is just, it’s been very difficult. It’s been a difficult war,” he told Reese. Frustration with lack of progress Trump has frequently hit back at critics who argue his meeting with Putin failed to move the Russian leader towards peace. But he now admitted that a direct meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky looks unlikely for the foreseeable future. “That’s why I really thought we would have this done. I would have loved to have had it done. Maybe they have to fight a little longer. You know, just keep fighting, stupidly, keep fighting,” Trump said. Senior White House officials believe some European leaders are publicly backing President Trump’s push to end the war in Ukraine, while quietly undermining progress behind the scenes, Axios reported. The Biden administration has asked the Treasury Department to draw up possible sanctions that Europe could impose on Russia. These include a full ban on oil and gas imports, along with secondary tariffs on India and China, similar to those already levied by the US.
Trump aides shift blame to Europe
Two weeks after Trump’s Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, little has moved forward. Frustrated aides say responsibility lies with European allies, not Trump, and not even Putin. “The Europeans don’t get to prolong this war and backdoor unreasonable expectations, while also expecting America to bear the cost,” a senior White House official told Axios. “If Europe wants to escalate this war, that will be up to them. But they will be hopelessly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory,” they added.
A clash over Zelensky’s strategy
According to US officials, some European capitals are pressing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to hold out for stronger concessions from Moscow. Washington views this as unrealistic and damaging. “Getting to a deal is an art of the possible. But some of the Europeans continue to operate in a fairy-tale land that ignores the fact it takes two to tango,” another senior official said. While the White House sees Britain and France as more constructive, it accuses others of leaving America to shoulder most of the war’s cost.
Trump’s growing impatience
After meeting both Putin and Zelensky, Trump has repeatedly said the next step must be a face-to-face summit between the two leaders. Moscow has so far refused, and Kyiv has ruled out territorial talks until Russia comes to the table. At a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Trump expressed his irritation, “Everybody is posturing. It’s all bullshit.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt admitted progress was stalling. “Perhaps both sides of this war are not ready to end it themselves,” she said.
Europe pushes back on criticism
European officials, however, reject claims of double-dealing. One senior diplomat told Axios there was no gap between what Europe says publicly and what it does in private. The official added that European governments are already preparing fresh sanctions against Russia. On Friday, Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff met Zelensky’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak in New York. They discussed the possibility of a Putin-Zelensky summit, and Yermak invited Witkoff to Kyiv. But no breakthrough was made.
