Ukraine plans record $109 bn defence spending, nearly two thirds of budget amid Russia war

More than four years of war in Ukraine have cost Russia heavily in soldiers, aircraft, armour, ships and military equipment. But the conflict has also provided Moscow with sustained combat experience against drones, electronic warfare, GPS jamming, precision weapons and Western-supplied air-defence systems. That's intelligence and information that cannot simply be purchased.&nbsp; Some of those lessons are now becoming visible in Russia’s emerging weapons. At the El Alamein International Airshow in Egypt, Moscow displayed several systems reflecting how its thinking has evolved. One of the clearest trends is the growing emphasis on unmanned and stand-off warfare, keeping expensive aircraft and personnel farther from enemy defences.&nbsp;<figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPc_ssk36PI"></oembed></figure>&nbsp;Russia publicly displayed the concept of using the stealth aircraft SU-57 as an airborne launch and command platform for unmanned weapons. The Shahed-derived, propeller-driven attack drone has been supplemented by newer jet-powered variants, reflecting the constant contest between Russian strike systems and Ukrainian interception. Another lesson concerns economics. Modern warfare requires not only sophisticated weapons but enough of them to sustain prolonged combat. The transformation lies in how they fit together. Long-range drones provide mass. Stand-off weapons protect aircraft. Electronic warfare disrupts the enemy. A Russian cargo jet has been stuck at Toronto Pearson International Airport since it launched an invasion of Ukraine. The Antonov An-124 plane has been stranded in Canada as the country closed its airspace to Russian aircraft in 2022, soon after the war started. In a bid to get it back, Volga-Dnepr appealed to be removed from the sanctions list, arguing it had not carried military equipment in five years. But it lost this appeal as well. Meanwhile, after all this time- that is, four and a half years- it has become an attraction at the airport. You can even see it on Google Maps. Six other Volga-Dnepr jets are stranded across the world The airline has nine Antonov An-124-100 in its fleet, and they are approximately 33.3 years old. Of these, six are stranded in different parts of the world. Three of them have been at Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ) in Germany since the war in Ukraine broke out, while the other two are stored at Dubai World Central (DWC) and Ulyanovsk Airport (ULY).

The cargo jet belongs to Volga-Dnepr Airlines, which has five more similar aircraft stranded in other parts of the world. It has been trying to get it back for years, but all its appeals have been rejected. Canada officially seized it in 2023.

A major security alert was triggered at Germany's Leipzig/Halle Airport after authorities discovered an explosive-laden drone near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft. Flights were diverted for several hours as bomb disposal teams deployed a robot to safely remove the detonator from the unmanned aerial vehicle.

The airport plays a crucial role in transporting military supplies for the German Armed Forces and NATO allies and also serves as a key base for Ukraine's Antonov Airlines. German officials described the incident as extremely serious and launched a full-scale investigation into the drone's origin and those responsible.

Germany's Interior Minister urged caution against speculation, saying investigators are examining every possible angle, including the possibility of foreign involvement. Officials also warned that the incident reflects the growing hybrid security threats facing Europe.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the Security Service destroyed a Tu-95 strategic bomber at Russia's Engels-2 air base, 800 kilometres deep into the country. India, as per a new analysis, has emerged as war-torn Ukraine's largest supplier of diesel in July 2025, accounting for 15.5 per cent of total imports. Data from NaftoRynok, a Kyiv-based oil market analytics firm, shows Indian shipments averaged 2,700 tonnes a day or 15.5 per cent of Kyiv's monthly imports — one of New Delhi's highest monthly export volumes this year. Ukraine once held the third-largest nuclear arsenal on earth. It once had nearly 5,900 nuclear warheads, it was more than Britain, France, and China combined, only fewer than the US and Russia. There were 176 intercontinental missiles in underground silos that could have struck anywhere on the globe. It also had 44 strategic bombers, each was capable of launching nuclear missions. Along with it ended the decade-long ideological war between the East and the West. The fall of the USSR can be attributed to many reasons, from the failed attempt by Mikhail Gorbachev to rejuvenate the Russian stagnating economy, the movement for independence in Soviet Republics, to the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Russia has reportedly fired a senior commander over false claims regarding the progress of the war in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian military bloggers reported Sunday (Nov. 24) that Colonel General Gennady Anashkin, the commander of the South Forces Group, was sacked after he provided misleading information regarding Russia’s position in the Siversk settlement in the eastern region of Donetsk. Russia-based outlet RBC also reported the development, citing military sources.

Ukrainian military bloggers claimed that Anashkin falsely boasted to his seniors about capturing several settlements. Rybar, one of the most prominent Russian military blogs, reported on Telegram how many such victories became “synonymous with lies and unjustified losses.”

“Only the lazy did not write about the problems there: in general, it took the system about two months to respond to it properly,” Rybar said, claiming Russian authorities were too late to respond to Anashkin’s alleged fraudulent activities.
