China on Friday appealed for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine while pressing on "no use" of nuclear weapons to resolve the conflict. The comments were made by China in a 12-point proposal issued on the "political settlement" of the crisis in the wake of the completion of one year of the Russia-Ukraine war. &nbsp;

"All parties should support Russia and Ukraine in working in the same direction and resuming direct dialogue as quickly as possible," the paper stated, released on the website of the foreign ministry.&nbsp;

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin had threatened that the conflict may take the shape of nuclear war. Clearing its stance on the issue, China stated that it strictly opposes not only the use of nuclear weapons but also the issuance of threats to deploy such weapons.&nbsp;

"Nuclear weapons must not be used and nuclear wars must not be fought. The threat or use of nuclear weapons should be opposed," the statement read. China further emphasised the need to protect civilians. "Parties to the conflict should strictly abide by international humanitarian law, and avoid attacking civilians or civilian facilities," it added.&nbsp;

"Conflict and war benefit no one. All parties must stay rational and exercise restraint, avoid fanning the flames and aggravating tensions and prevent the crisis from deteriorating further or even spiralling out of control. We oppose the development, and use of biological and chemical weapons by any country under any circumstances. There are no winners in conflict wars,” the proposal said.

Before the release of the proposal, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called it a crucial step. “I think that, in general, the fact that China started talking about peace in Ukraine, I think that it is not bad. It is important for us that all states are on our side, on the side of justice,” Zelensky said on Friday.&nbsp;

On Thursday, China abstained when a nonbinding resolution was approved by the UN General Assembly that appealed to Russia to withdraw its forces and end hostilities in Ukraine. It is among the 16 countries that either voted in opposition or abstained on around five previous resolutions on the Ukraine war.&nbsp;

The resolution, which Ukraine had drafted in consultation with its allies, passed 141-7 with 32 abstentions, giving a strong message to Russia on the war's first anniversary.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, China on Thursday told the United Nations that "brutal facts offer ample proof that sending weapons will not bring peace" in the Russia-Ukraine war.

"Adding fuel to the fire will only exacerbate tensions. Prolonging and expanding the conflict will only make ordinary people pay an even heftier price," said China's deputy UN Ambassador Dai Bing, while speaking at the UN General Assembly.

Just days before completion of a year to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced his displeasure against what he termed was an 'affront'.

"That invasion is an affront to our collective conscience," Guterres said. He called the anniversary "a grim milestone for the people of Ukraine and for the international community."

As fighting raged on in Ukraine, the General Assembly began debating a motion backed by Kyiv and its allies calling for a "just and lasting peace."&nbsp;

In his opening remarks, Guterres highlighted the impact on the world of Russia's February 24, 2022 invasion of its neighbour.&nbsp;

He noted that it has generated eight million refugees, and hurt global food and energy supplies in countries far away from the war zone.&nbsp;

"As I said from day one, Russia's attack on Ukraine challenges the cornerstone principles and values of our multilateral system," he said.&nbsp;

"While prospects may look bleak today, we know that genuine, lasting peace must be based on the UN Charter and international law. The longer the fighting continues, the more difficult this work will be," he said.&nbsp;

With the new resolution, Kyiv hopes to garner the support of at least as many nations as in October, when 143 countries voted to condemn Russia's declared annexation of several Ukrainian territories.&nbsp;

While the measure may not be as tough as Ukraine would like, it hopes that large number of UN states will back the non-binding resolution to demonstrate Kyiv has the support of the global community.&nbsp;

The resolution, supported by dozens of countries stresses "the need to reach, as soon as possible, a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine in line with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations."&nbsp;

It also demands Russia "immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine."&nbsp;

Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24 last year. After sustained battlefield gains in first few months of the conflict, Russian forces had to retreat in face of counter-attacks by Ukrainian forces.

Just ahead of one-year anniversary of Ukraine war, UN chief condemns Russian 'affront'

Ahead of the one-year anniversary of what Moscow refers to as its “special military operation” in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered his annual address to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/putin-to-address-russian-duma-world-news-wion-564164">joint houses of parliament</a> and called it a “watershed moment” for the country. During the speech on Tuesday (February 21), he also said that Moscow is suspending participation in the New START treaty, a bilateral agreement on nuclear arms control with the United States. However, the foreign ministry later said that it will comply with certain portions of the treaty.

A “difficult, watershed moment”&nbsp;

The nearly two-hour speech began with the Russian president saying, “I am making this address at a time which we all know is a difficult, watershed moment for our country, a time of cardinal, irreversible changes around the world, the most important historic events that shape the future of our country and our people, when each of us bears a colossal responsibility,” as per Reuters.&nbsp;

Referring to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and the eastern Donbas region, Putin said that since 2014 the people of Donbas “had been fighting, defending their right to live on their own land, to speak their native language”. Reports suggest that Moscow has intensified attacks on the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russia-claims-capture-of-village-near-eastern-ukrainian-region-kharkiv-563430">eastern front</a> in Ukraine and controls parts of the aforementioned region.&nbsp;

Speaking about the eastern Ukrainian region, the Russian president also said how the residents of Donbas have not given up “in the conditions of blockade and constant shelling, undisguised hatred on the part of the Kyiv regime. They believed and expected that Russia would come to their rescue.” Meanwhile, it has also been reported that despite Russian troops witnessing at least three significant battlefield reversals, Moscow continues to control approximately one-fifth of Ukraine.

Putin’s statement also comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an address on Sunday claimed that Kyiv’s troops are inflicting “extraordinarily significant” losses on the Russian forces in several towns in Donbas, where the fight is said to be focused on, in&nbsp;the past couple of months. “The more losses Russia suffers there, in Donbas - in Bakhmut, Vuhledar, Marinka, Kreminna - the faster we will be able to end this war with Ukraine's victory”, said Zelensky.&nbsp;

The ongoing conflict has also been called the biggest confrontation between Russia and the West in decades. “I have already said many times that the people of Ukraine have become the hostage of the Kyiv regime and its Western overlords, who have effectively occupied this country in the political, military and economic sense”, said Putin, in his state-of-the-nation address on Tuesday.&nbsp;

He added that the West has “not achieved its goals anywhere and it will not”. The Russian president also accused the West and the “current regime in Kyiv” of not only escalating the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/in-pics-major-battles-of-the-russia-ukraine-war-564401">ongoing conflict</a> but also starting it as well as “increasing (the) number of victims”. According to the United Nations Office for Human Rights (OHCHR), over 8,000 civilians have been killed since the beginning of the conflict while over 13,000 have been wounded.&nbsp;

Additionally, nearly 18 million are in “dire” need of humanitarian assistance and 14 million are said to have been displaced in Ukraine, as per the UN report. However, the data has been called “only the tip of the iceberg” by the UN human rights chief, Volker Turk. He added, “The toll on civilians is unbearable. Amid electricity and water shortages during the cold winter months”.&nbsp;

Addressing Russia’s lawmakers and military elite, Putin went on to allege that the West was threatening Moscow’s very existence with the Ukraine conflict. “The Western elites do not conceal their goals…It is a direct quote – to bring Russia a strategic defeat. What does it mean? What is it for us? It means to end us, once and for all. It means they plan to turn a local conflict into a global confrontation. We understand it exactly like that. And we will react to it accordingly,” said Putin, as per Reuters.

Russian economy

The Russian president also spoke about how the West has not succeeded in defeating the country’s economy since “those who initiated the sanctions (against Russia) have punished themselves, caused price increases, job losses, business closures and an energy crisis in their countries.”

&nbsp;He added, “And they tell their own citizens, and we hear that: that the Russians are to blame for everything. Which means did they use against us in this aggression of sanctions?” As per a report by Statista published on Tuesday, territories and organisations across the world have imposed 10,608 restrictions on Russian individuals, 3,431 list-based sanctions, and 492 sanctions against institutions. The data was calculated starting from February 22, 2022, which is two days prior to the beginning of the invasion to February 10, 2023.&nbsp;

During his address, the Russian president also went on to say that the “anti-Russian sanctions are only a tool, but the goal - as they themselves declare…is to make our citizens suffer.” In 2022, the Russian economy contracted by 2.1 per cent, reported the government-run statistics agency Rosstat, on Monday (February 20). While many have questioned the authenticity of the figures which were published a day before Putin was due to deliver the state-of-the-nation address, Moscow's economy was also called resilient in the face of Western sanctions and prior estimates which projected bigger contractions.&nbsp;

Putin announced suspension of New START treaty

During his speech, on Tuesday, the Russian president announced the suspension of the New START treaty with the US which limits the number of strategic nuclear warheads that Washington and Moscow can deploy. The treaty in question also caps the delivery of the deployment of land and submarine-based missiles and bombers by the two countries.&nbsp;

“In the beginning of February this year there was a statement from the North Atlantic alliance demanding that Russia ‘returns to the Strategic Arms Treaty’ as they call it, including allowing inspections of our nuclear defence facilities. I don’t even know what to call it (the request for inspections). It’s a theatre of the absurd,” said Putin, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

However, hours later, Moscow on Tuesday clarified that it will continue observing restrictions on nuclear warheads under the New START treaty. "Russia intends to adhere to a responsible approach and will continue to strictly comply with the quantitative restrictions on strategic offensive arms stipulated by it (New START) within the life cycle of the treaty," Russia's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Putin said, their repeated requests to inspect some US objects have been declined on “formal grounds. We can't properly inspect anything on that side,” he added. Furthermore, the Russian president also acknowledged that Russia-US relations have “deteriorated” and that Washington is fully responsible for this.&nbsp;

He also accused the West of wanting to “inflict a strategic defeat on us and sneak into our nuclear facilities.” “In this regard, I am forced to announce today that Russia is suspending its participation in the strategic offensive arms treaty,” said Putin towards the end of his speech to the lawmakers present at the joint session of the parliament.&nbsp;

Furthermore, he said that in the current situation, Russia’s ministry of defence and&nbsp;State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom (ROSATOM) should make sure that Moscow is “ready to test its nuclear weapons”. However, he said that they will not do it first but if the US conducts its test then Moscow will too, adding that “no one should be under dangerous illusions that global strategic parity can be destroyed.”

On the other hand, the US has previously accused Russia of violating the treaty by not allowing inspections on its territory. This has sparked fears of a nuclear conflict as Moscow has supposedly made veiled threats since the beginning of the conflict. Notably, the two nuclear-armed nations account for about 90 per cent of the world’s nuclear heads, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

What is the New START treaty?

As mentioned earlier, the treaty limits Russia and the US’ nuclear arsenal while&nbsp;the countries have also committed to deploying no more than 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads and a maximum of 700 long-range missiles and bombers. Additionally, every year, each side is allowed to conduct up to 18 inspections of strategic nuclear weapons sites, in order to ensure that the other side has not breached the terms of the treaty.&nbsp;

The treaty was signed in 2010 by former US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev and came into effect a year later. In 2021, it was extended for five more years when incumbent President Joe Biden took office. Notably, the aforementioned inspections had been halted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and while the talks of resuming them were to take place in Egypt last year Moscow postponed them. Since then neither side has decided on a new date.&nbsp;

What does it mean? What is it for us? It means to end us, once and for all. It means they plan to turn a local conflict into a global confrontation. We understand it exactly like that. And we will react to it accordingly,” said Putin, as per Reuters. Which means did they use against us in this aggression of sanctions?” As per a report by Statista published on Tuesday, territories and organisations across the world have imposed 10,608 restrictions on Russian individuals, 3,431 list-based sanctions, and 492 sanctions against institutions. The data was calculated starting from February 22, 2022, which is two days prior to the beginning of the invasion to February 10, 2023. During his address, the Russian president also went on to say that the “anti-Russian sanctions are only a tool, but the goal - as they themselves declare…is to make our citizens suffer.” In 2022, the Russian economy contracted by 2.1 per cent, reported the government-run statistics agency Rosstat, on Monday (February 20). While many have questioned the authenticity of the figures which were published a day before Putin was due to deliver the state-of-the-nation address, Moscow's economy was also called resilient in the face of Western sanctions and prior estimates which projected bigger contractions. The treaty in question also caps the delivery of the deployment of land and submarine-based missiles and bombers by the two countries. “In the beginning of February this year there was a statement from the North Atlantic alliance demanding that Russia ‘returns to the Strategic Arms Treaty’ as they call it, including allowing inspections of our nuclear defence facilities. I don’t even know what to call it (the request for inspections). It’s a theatre of the absurd,” said Putin, as per Reuters. However, hours later, Moscow on Tuesday clarified that it will continue observing restrictions on nuclear warheads under the New START treaty. "Russia intends to adhere to a responsible approach and will continue to strictly comply with the quantitative restrictions on strategic offensive arms stipulated by it (New START) within the life cycle of the treaty," Russia's foreign ministry said in a statement. However, he said that they will not do it first but if the US conducts its test then Moscow will too, adding that “no one should be under dangerous illusions that global strategic parity can be destroyed.” On the other hand, the US has previously accused Russia of violating the treaty by not allowing inspections on its territory. This has sparked fears of a nuclear conflict as Moscow has supposedly made veiled threats since the beginning of the conflict. Notably, the two nuclear-armed nations account for about 90 per cent of the world’s nuclear heads, as per Reuters. What is the New START treaty? As mentioned earlier, the treaty limits Russia and the US’ nuclear arsenal while the countries have also committed to deploying no more than 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads and a maximum of 700 long-range missiles and bombers. Additionally, every year, each side is allowed to conduct up to 18 inspections of strategic nuclear weapons sites, in order to ensure that the other side has not breached the terms of the treaty. Biden walking the streets of Kyiv and patting President Volodymyr Zelensky on the back like a patronising baseball coach would have looked good had this been an American university playoff. Sadly, this is a different arena far removed from the Transatlantic insurance that an ocean in the middle offers for the wonks at the State Department. &nbsp;Joe Biden is not GI Joe. There is no American blood falling on Ukraine's fertile soil.

The big question is: Who will bell the cat a.k.a. Vladimir Putin? As things stand, the Russia-Ukraine war is in a situation that would in typical diplospeak be described as a stalemate, logjam or gridlock. There is no end in sight, and there is no clue on what is going on inside Putin's mind, as Biden himself elegantly admitted. &nbsp;Somalia, Afghanistan, Vietnam and Iran stand testimony to the limits of a lapsed superpower. But I would not waste words like 'stalemate' on a situation where blood is flowing every day. Moscow and Europe have economic guns pointing to each other's head thanks to the fuel linkages and geographic proximity between the two. Putin's hold over his country shows no sign of weakening significantly. Moscow cannot capture Kyiv or the hearts of Ukrainians. Putin's stated military objective of "de-Nazification" of Ukraine is either non-existent or was achieved months ago. In the practical world of wise diplomacy, Putin would be offered an honourable exit with some assurances so that sovereign Ukraine can resume its poise without everyday bloodshed or constant fear. That might also lead to loud sighs of relief from Scandinavia. For all that, what we need is enlightened diplomacy, not bumbling bravado.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi came closest to a somewhat credible response when he muttered something about this not being an era of wars to Putin. Was that a flash in the diplomatic pan? The smartest thing would now be for beleaguered European Union or its prime economic engine, Germany, to reach out to India and do something meaningful to truly figure out what Putin wants and give him an honourable exit and/or assurance package. &nbsp;India's G-20 presidency offers a pinhole for light to enter the dark tunnel behind Biden's photogenic overtures. India's rivalry or coldness towards China, and Beijing's own reticence in being too involved in things away from its borders may well earn some brownie points for it to bridge a horrible trust deficit between the West and Moscow. Involving Japan in the equation might give peace a further nudge.

There is a limit to which a neutral country can get involved in this, but the EU, Scandinavia, Russia and Ukraine itself have the most skin in the game and therefore the imperative for action. &nbsp;India can perhaps walk its talk as the voice of the Global South in the G-20 grouping by actually talking to the real Global South -- the vast comity of nations in the UN General Assembly below the glass ceiling above which sits the fractured Security Council whose influential members are inept powers lacking credibility or a spirit of consensus.

Giving peace a chance may be a better idea than war games behind glossy photo ops.

Biden gives war a chance in Kyiv, but it is time to talk peace in Ukraine

The Russian military, in a statement on Saturday (February 18) claimed to have taken control of a village in the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv and said that it has been "completely liberated". This comes amid Moscow's ongoing invasion of Kyiv which began nearly a year ago. The small village in question is Hrianykivka near the key city of Kupiansk, in eastern Ukraine. &nbsp;

“The settlement of Gryanykivka, Kharkov region, was completely liberated”, said the Russian defence ministry, in a statement, referring to the Ukrainian village of Gryanykivka by its Russian name, as per AFP. Prior to the Russian invasion, the village was home to 600 people. Notably, the city near which the village of Gryanykivka has been on the frontlines in eastern Ukraine locals fear it can be taken over again as Russia has continued to attack several cities including Kupiansk and Bakhmut, said the Ukraine army, on Saturday.&nbsp;

Additionally, the Russian military spokesperson, Igor Konashenkov also claimed that Moscow’s army has “inflicted combat defeat” on Ukrainian troops near the eastern town of Vuhledar, reported AFP.&nbsp;

Notably, this was following a statement by the governor of the Luhansk province, in Ukraine’s east, who told local media that there has been an uptick in ground and air attacks from Russian forces. “Today it is rather difficult on all directions. There are constant attempts to break through our defence lines,” said the governor of Luhansk to local media, addressing the fighting near the city of Kreminna.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, officials in the western Ukrainian city of Khmelnytskyi, said that recent blasts have injured two civilians and shattered hundreds of windows after Moscow fired missiles from the Black Sea on Saturday. The mayor of the aforementioned Ukrainian city, Oleksandr Symchyshyn, in an interview with the national tv, said, “There are three damaged educational institutions, around ten damaged high-rise apartment blocks. Around five hundred windows and balconies have been destroyed”, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

Kyiv’s air force claimed that Russia launched four Kalibr missiles from the Black Sea out of which two were shot down by their defences while two explosions were heard in Khmelnytskyi which is over 250 km west&nbsp;of the Ukrainian&nbsp;capital. Air raid alerts were issued across Ukraine on Saturday morning while the authorities in eastern and southern regions were warned of potential precautionary power outages to limit the damage to energy grids in case of strikes.&nbsp;

This follows reports of Moscow repeatedly targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure which has left millions without power, heating or water during the cold winter. However, these attacks have not been confirmed by the Russian authorities.&nbsp;

What is happening at the Munich Security Conference?

Amid the ongoing Munich Security Conference Ukraine’s western allies reaffirmed their support for the conflict-hit nation, on Saturday. Countries like the United States which has accused Russia of committing “crimes against humanity” in Ukraine and that it will support Kyiv “as long as it takes,” said Vice President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/munich-security-conference-kamala-harris-vows-support-to-ukraine-for-as-long-as-it-takes-563436">Kamala Harris</a>. Subsequently, United Kingdom Prime Minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/munich-conference-rishi-sunak-says-uk-to-provide-ukraine-with-long-range-weapons-calls-for-new-nato-charter-563450">Rishi Sunak</a> said that the country will always be on the side of “freedom, democracy and the rule of law,” while assuring Ukraine of its support. “Security of the European continent will always be our priority,” said Sunak.&nbsp;

This also comes a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who addressed the security conference via a video link said that it is “obvious” that Kyiv would not be the last stop for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion. He added, “He’s going to continue his movement all the way...including all the other states that at some point in time were part of the Soviet bloc”. He also urged the West to maintain the speedy supply of weapons and said “delay has always been and still is a mistake”.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, on the same day, Russia accused the US of inciting Ukraine to escalate the war. “Now the American warmongers have gone even further: They incite the Kyiv regime to further escalate the war”, said Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, addressing the reporters at the security conference on Friday. She added that some US officials dreamed like “crazies” of defeating Moscow, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

The statement of the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson came after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in an interview with CBS, said that China was "considering providing lethal support" to Moscow ranging "from ammunition to the weapons themselves".

Similar comments were made by him in a series of interviews from Germany, where he took part in the Munich Security Conference on Saturday and met his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.

The accusations of Blinken came in the wake of the straining relationship between the two nations after Washington shot down what it claimed to be a Chinese spy balloon.

Concerns have been raised about China's deepening ties with Russia even after the conflict but Wang Yi maintained that Beijing was only playing a constructive role, and firmly supported the idea of dialogue to resolve conflict.

"We do not accept the United States' finger-pointing on China-Russia relations, let alone coercion and pressure. China's direction on the Ukraine issue can be summed up in one phrase, which is urging peace and promoting dialogue," said spokesman Wang Wenbin.&nbsp;

White House spokesman John Kirby said that more than 30,000 mercenaries, who were fighting under the Wagner Group, have lost their lives or have been injured since Russia waged war against Ukraine.&nbsp;Kirby added that significant losses have been borne by the group in recent weeks, with around 9,000 fighters losing their lives in action. He added that people were heavily recruited by Wagner from Russian prisons and the most casualties were untrained convicts.

Even after so many casualties, Wagner claims to have made gains near the city of Bakhmut. Around the city, the troops have engaged in some of the fiercest fighting of the war, with Wagner mercenaries getting heavily engaged in efforts of Russia to capture the city, as per media reports.

Kirby said further advances by Russia can prove difficult considering that the gains made by it&nbsp;in Bakhmut came at a "devastating cost that is not sustainable” and took months to achieve. The city's military significance was also questioned by Kirby.

"It is possible that they may end up being successful in Bakhmut, but it will prove of no real worth to them because it is of no real strategic value," he said.

More than 30,000 Wagner fighters died or suffered injuries in Ukraine war, claims US

In an interview with BBC, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he is not willing to give up even a single territory of his country as part of any peace deal with Russia.

Zelensky said that conceding territory would mean Moscow could "keep coming back", and added that Western weapons are likely to bring peace closer. He further said that the predicted spring offensive had already started, while speaking to the BBC, in the wake of one year of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

"Russian attacks are already happening from several directions," he added. However, he expressed belief in the Ukrainian forces' capabilities to keep resisting the advances of Russia till a counter-offensive is launched by them.

"Of course, modern weapons speed up peace. Weapons are the only language Russia understands," Zelensky said while speaking to the BBC.

"I hope (Belarus) won't join (the war). If it does, we will fight and we will survive,” Zelensky said. He added that&nbsp;it will be a “huge mistake” to permit Russia to use Belarus as a staging post for launching an attack again.

On Thursday, when Lukashenko was asked about allowing his country to be used as a staging ground for invasion by Russia's invasion, he had said, “Yes, I'm ready. I'm ready to provide (territory) again. I'm also ready to wage war, alongside the Russians, from the territory of Belarus. But only if someone - even a single soldier - enters our territory from there (Ukraine) with weapons to kill my people."

Greek prime minister's office said that the Balkan neighbours will co-operate on procuring and storing natural gas. It also said that the two countries will "explore" creation of a new pipeline between the ports of Alexandroupolis and Burgas.

The agreements are "one more step towards the strategic goal of European (energy) autonomy," Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said after a meeting with visiting Bulgarian President Rumen Radev.

The president said that Greek companies would now be able to store natural gas in underground facility of Chiren while Bulgarian companies will have access to Greek terminal of Revithoussa.

"Both countries will have assured access to facilities that are critical to their energy security," Mitsotakis said.

He said the agreement "turns our two countries into crossroads for gas distribution not just from Greece to Bulgaria, but to the rest of Europe."

Both states have sped up projects to diversify away from dependence on Russian oil and gas.

Earlier in February, Bulgaria launched construction of a long-delayed gas pipeline link to neighbouring Serbia, while Greece has increased its capacity to store liquid natural gas.

Russia is a major supplier of natural gas to Europe. But ever since the Ukraine war broke out, Russia has been leveraging its position as major energy provider for political gains.

Paraskoviivka is a village just north of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region. Russia has been trying hard to fully control the region.

For several weeks, Russian forces have been posting painstaking incremental gains north of Bakhmut and said they had cut off three out of four Ukrainian supply routes to the city.

But Prigozhin has also said it could take months to capture the embattled city that has turned into a key political and symbolic prize.

Kyiv on Monday conceded a "difficult" situation north of Bakhmut, shortly after Moscow claimed control of the village of Krasna Gora, adjacent to Paraskoviivka.

There was no immediate comment from Russia's defence ministry on Paraskoviivka's capture.

In 2022, the company's reported sales increased 8.4 per cent to 94.4 billion Swiss francs ($102.31 billion).

Many consumer goods makers, including Unilever, have been increasing prices to deal with the inflation aftermath. Amid increased pressure on margins and profitability, the surge is set to continue this year.&nbsp;

Nestle Chief Executive Mark Schneider made the latest announcement - which came after the corporation missed its 2022 profit market forecasts - on Thursday (February 16). "Our gross margin is down about 260 basis points - that is massive. That is after all the pricing we have done in 2022," Schneider told reporters. &nbsp;

Munich Security Conference to kick off tomorrow: what issues will take centre stage?

A 19-year-old student from Russia’s Arkhangelsk region may face a total of ten years in prison, if convicted, for supposedly discrediting Moscow’s army and justifying terrorism. Furthermore, the teenager has also been placed on Russia’s terror list which puts her on par with ISIS, al Qaeda and the Taliban. This comes after she was charged over social media posts which were allegedly critical of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Who is she?

The teenager in question is Olesya Krivtsova hailing from Russia’s Arkhangelsk region has been placed on house arrest after she was charged for her social media posts which authorities in Moscow say discredit the Russian army and justify terrorism.&nbsp;

Krivtsova who is a student at the Northern Federal University is also facing criminal charges for her alleged discrediting of the Russian army and making a critical repost of the war on a student chat on VK, a Russian social network. Currently, the 19-year-old is under house arrest at her mother’s apartment and is banned from going online or using other forms of communication.&nbsp;

How did this happen?

According to media reports, one of the supposedly anti-war posts also included an explosion on the Crimean bridge in October 2021 which also criticised Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. Addressing the post in question, during&nbsp;a recent&nbsp;interview with BBC,&nbsp;Olesya said, "I posted an Instagram story about the bridge&nbsp;reflecting on how Ukrainians were happy with what had happened." 
 
Subsequently, two of her fellow students took a screenshot of the story as well as some of &nbsp;Krivtsova’s anti-war comments shared in a small chatroom on the Telegram messaging app and reported her to the authorities, as per a report by Washington Post. In relation to this case, Krivtsova has been detained twice.&nbsp;

Last year, in March Russia, introduced <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/amid-ukraine-invasion-russia-intesifies-crackdown-on-media-464863">two articles</a> to its criminal code which were passed days after what Moscow described as its “special military operation” first began in Ukraine. One of them was article 280.3 states that “public actions aimed at discrediting the use of the armed forces of the Russian Federation”. The violation of this is punishable by fines and a prison sentence of up to three years in lesser cases, or five years if there is resulting damage to life, property, public order and security.&nbsp;

What do we know about Krivtsova's case? 
 
Last May, Krivtsova had to pay a fine of $450 after she was charged with “discrediting the Russian armed forces” by distributing anti-war posters. However, the 19-year-old was later detained for the first time when a group of officers showed up at her door on December 26.

According to Natalya Krivtsova, her mother, at the time her daughter was living with her husband Ilya when they were asked to lie face down on the ground. "I was talking on the phone to my mother when I heard the front door opening. Lots of police came in. They took away my phone and shouted at me to lie on the floor,"&nbsp;Olesya told BBC.&nbsp;

The officers allegedly threatened them with a sledgehammer, her mother also said that Olesya was scared that he would hit her husband with it. On their way to the police station officers reportedly told her “hello from Wagner”, a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-designates-wagner-group-as-significant-transnational-criminal-organization-imposes-harsher-sanctions-556330">mercenary group</a> headed by Yevgeny Prigozhin who has sent a private army to fight alongside the Russian military in Ukraine.&nbsp;

“Olesya was very frightened because she saw the video in which a prisoner was killed with a sledgehammer”, the teenager’s mother told CNN. The video she is referring to is what has made the sledgehammer, an eerie symbol of Wagner which shows mercenaries from the group who allegedly executed a man convicted for murder, Yevgeny Nuzhin, as per media reports.&nbsp;

After her detention, she was taken to the regional court in Primorsky where the judge ruled to limit her communication but not restrain her movements which the prosecution, as per the Washington Post, strongly requested. However, days later placed on the wanted list and detained again and accused of attempting to leave the country.&nbsp;

Currently placed on house arrest awaiting trial Krivtsova sports a bracelet which tracks her every movement on one ankle and a tattoo on the other that shows Russian President Vladimir Putin's face on the body of a spider that says ‘Big Brother is Watching You’.&nbsp;

Russian teen to face 10 years in prison, placed on terror list over anti-war posts: What we know so far

The Ukrainian presidential office, on Monday (February 13), said that the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut is witnessing fierce battle as Russian forces continue heavy shelling and infantry attacks. At least five civilians have been killed while several others have been wounded in the last 24 hours across Ukraine, they added. Meanwhile, speaking to reporters in Brussels, the NATO chief while urging Kyiv’s allies in the West to ramp up military support for the conflict-torn country said that Russia’s so-called spring offensive might already have begun.&nbsp;

According to Ukrainian military officials, positions in Bakhmut have been fortified with only those with a military role being allowed inside the city in eastern Ukraine, reported Reuters, and any civilians who still want to leave the city would have to brave the incoming fire. They have also reported Russian shelling along the frontlines and bombardment of at least 16 settlements near Bakhmut.&nbsp;

Additionally, the deputy commander of Ukraine's Svoboda battalion, told Reuters that “the city, the city's suburbs, the entire perimeter, and essentially the entire Bakhmut direction and Kostyantynivka are under crazy, chaotic shelling”. He added that while there is no fighting in the city centre, the forces are prepared for any assault.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian presidential office has also called the situation in the city’s northern suburb of Paraskoviivka “difficult” as it endures intense shelling, while the nearby town of Vuhledar is also under heavy bombardment. This comes as the eastern Ukrainian city is said to be an important objective for Russian President Vladimir Putin as its capture would allow Moscow to establish a strong hold over the Donetsk region after facing months of setbacks.&nbsp;

In the past 24 hours, Russia has shelled dozens of cities and villages in Donetsk which also includes Druzhkivka where a missile hit a hospital and Pokrovsk where constant shelling damaged at least seven houses and a kindergarten, said a report by the Associated Press. Additionally, Donetsk Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said that the Russian shelling has intensified as they “accumulate more forces for an attack on peaceful cities”.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Ukrainian region Luhansk’s Governor Serhii Haidai, in a TV interview said that while Moscow’s troops have pulled back after days of intense fighting near the key city of Kreminna they are not “running out of steam”. The Dnipropetrovsk region also witnessed shelling where one person was killed and two others were injured in the city of Nikopol, as per media reports.&nbsp;

NATO chief’s address in Brussels 
 
Addressing reporters, on Monday, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, “The reality is we have seen the start (of a Russian offensive) already”. This comes as many have feared a massive offensive by Moscow as it nears the one-year anniversary of its “special military operation” in Ukraine.&nbsp;

The NATO chief also said how this “highlights the importance of timing. It’s urgent to provide Ukraine with more weapons” and that Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown “no sign whatsoever” of “preparing for peace”. He added, “President Putin does now - is to send thousands and thousands more troops, accepting a very high rate of casualty.” Therefore, he believes that arming Ukraine more quickly could save lives and bring a quicker end to the conflict.

“The current rate of Ukraine’s ammunition expenditure is many times higher than our current rate of production”, said Stoltenberg adding that it will increase targets for stockpiling ammunition. This also comes as Ukraine has sought fighter jets and long-range missiles from its western allies to counter-offensive, which the NATO chief said would be discussed but that Kyiv needs support on the ground.

“The Kremlin’s attempts to bring violence to Moldova will not work. Our main goal is the security of citizens and the state. Our goal is peace and public order in the country”, Sandu asserted. The alleged plan also relies on “internal forces”, said the Moldovan president and named two Moldovan oligarchs, Ilan Shor and Vladimir Plahotniuc, both of whom are not only currently in exile but also sanctioned by the United States and the United Kingdom.&nbsp;

Moldovan President Maia Sandu reveals Russia’s plans to topple its government

A report by the Guardian citing anonymous sources, on Sunday (February 12) reported that Iran has used boats and state-owned airlines to smuggle advanced long-range armed drones to Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine. At least 18 drones were delivered to Moscow’s navy following a visit by Russian officials to Tehran back in November where they selected the drones in question, as per the report.&nbsp;

Last year, Russia is said to have sent a 10-man delegation to Iran that selected six Mohajer-6 drones and 12 Shahed 191 and 129 drones, the former can fly around 200 km and carry two missiles under each of its wings while the latter is capable of the air-to-ground strike.&nbsp;

Additionally, the Mohajer-6 drones can remain in the air for six hours and operate on electric power and are equipped to carry bombs weighing at least 40kg, high-precision imaging and targeting systems, reported the Guardian. The Shahed 129 can carry a 60 kg payload and fly for at least four hours, while the Shahed 191 can fly for five hours and carry 10 kg more than the former.

According to the report, most of the drones in question were “secretly picked” by an Iranian vessel from a base in the Caspian Sea and then transferred at sea to a Russian navy boat. The sources also claimed that others were sent to Moscow on a state-owned Iranian airline.&nbsp;

This comes after officials in the United States said that Iran had begun showcasing its Shahed 191 and 129 drones in June to Russia and expected the sale to happen in the upcoming months. Additionally, Tehran has also sent three officials per drone which is approximately 54 people in total to help “integrate the smuggled craft into the Russian military”, claimed the Guardian citing sources in the middle eastern country.&nbsp;

Iran smuggled at least 18 drones into Russia by boats, state airlines: Report

At least 81 OSCE delegates from 20 countries criticised Austria’s decision, in a letter and called upon the government to ban the participation of the sanctioned Russians, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

The letter in question was addressed to Austria’s chancellor, foreign minister and other officials in which&nbsp;at least 81 delegates from 20 countries including France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Ukraine, and so on have called upon the government in Vienna to ban the participation of sanctioned Russian lawmakers. They wrote, “Russian parliamentarians are an integral part of the power system and complicit in the crimes Russia commits every day in Ukraine.”

Therefore, lawmakers from Moscow “have no place in an institution tasked with promoting sincere dialogue and opposition to the war,” the letter added. They also said that Russia would use the meeting to “sow disinformation, fake news and hate speech” and their participation would be read as “indirect legitimisation and part of a return to ‘business as usual,’” reported AFP.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of the conflict, while the Austrian government has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it has asserted the need to maintain diplomatic relations with Moscow. The European country is also home to several international organisations, including the 57-member nation OSCE which was established during the Cold War to facilitate dialogue between the East and West, of which Russia is also a part.&nbsp;

Reports suggest that Moscow plans to send delegates on February 23 and 24 when the OSCE’s parliamentary assembly is set to convene. However, the Russian delegation includes at least 15 lawmakers who have been sanctioned by the EU. Earlier this month, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg also defended the government’s decision to issue visas to the sanctioned Russian lawmakers.&nbsp;

He argued that despite the “brutal Russian attack against Ukraine”, it is important to have open channels of communication with Moscow. Additionally, the foreign ministry said that they are legally obligated as the host of OSCE headquarters in the country’s capital city to grant visas to representatives of nations who want to participate. So far, Austria has only sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine but unlike most of its EU counterparts has not sent weapons to Kyiv.&nbsp;

This also comes days after Austria expelled four Russian diplomats for acting “in a manner inconsistent with their diplomatic status”. Out of the four diplomats, the two stationed at the Russian Embassy in Austria were declared personae non-gratae and ordered to leave the country by February 8. Whereas the other two worked at the Russian mission to the United Nations in Vienna, said the Austrian foreign ministry, in a statement.&nbsp;

It added, the two working with the UN, acted in a way that was inconsistent with the host country agreement between the United Nations and Austria. While the ministry did not detail the actions of the diplomats, officials speaking on condition of anonymity to Reuters said that the case involved spying.&nbsp;

“First we have to quietly take Artyomovsk (Bakhmut) and then we can say loud and clear that we have taken it,”&nbsp;he said, referring to Bakhmut by its Soviet-era name which is still used in Russia. 
 
According to Prigozhin, it is too early to say if they are close to capturing Bakhmut which he has attributed to many roads out of the city but fewer roads in. He added, “Ukrainian troops are well trained...and like any large city it is impossible to capture it from head-on. We are managing very well,” as per Reuters.&nbsp;

He also compared the fight to capture Soledar, undertaken after failures in taking Bakhmut, to the six-month battles that the Soviet Army needed to secure Stalingrad (the present-day Russian city of Volgograd) during World War II. This comes after Prigozhin repeatedly criticised the Russian army and Kremlin commanders for their failures in the offensive against Ukraine and maintained that the battle for Soledar was exclusively waged by his Wagner forces.&nbsp;

However, during the recent interview, he reportedly&nbsp;refrained from&nbsp;further attacks on Russia's military leadership but said that it is important that the top command understands the situation of the men&nbsp;on the front lines. "So if a general goes into a trench and talks to the soldiers, then the soldiers frankly in the current situation will be just fucking amazed and very pleased. That will be enough for them to understand they’re not sitting alone there with their problems,"&nbsp;he said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom’s ministry of defence has speculated that the Wagner forces have advanced at least 2-3 km around northern Bakhmut since Tuesday after months of deadlock on the front lines. The ministry also spoke about how this could threaten the main western access road to Bakhmut, however, the Ukrainian military analyst has previously said that the supplies were still getting through.&nbsp;

In a separate interview, military analyst Oleh Zhdanov said that the situation around Bakhmut remains one of the most difficult sectors for the Ukrainian forces as Russia continues to deploy its conscripts. “The area south of Bakhmut is a very difficult sector…And the city itself remains the hottest spot on the front at this time,” said Zhdanov.&nbsp;

Mercenary group Wagner chief says Moscow could take two years to capture eastern Ukrainian regions

Argentina's immigration authorities are cracking down on Russian pregnant women, who have been flocking to Argentina so that they can give birth to their children and gain the country's citizenship for the newborns since Moscow invaded Ukraine.&nbsp;Argentina’s immigration office director Florencia Carignano on Friday said that they have launched a judicial investigation into what she called a lucrative business that came with the assurance of Argentinian passports for the Russian parents.

Carignano interacted with all 33 Russian women, who were 32 to 34 weeks pregnant and had arrived in Buenos Aires on the same flight on Thursday. Many of the women were initially not given entry at passport control but later on, were allowed to enter the country.&nbsp;

Although the idea of birth tourism is not new, since the Russia-Ukraine war, Argentina, where there are no visa requirements for Russians, has emerged as a popular destination for families hoping to give their children the privileges of dual citizenship.

Carignano said that around 10,500 pregnant Russians arrived in Amsterdam in the past year.

In an interview, Carignano added that “5,800 of them (were) in the last three months, many of them declaring they were in the 33rd or 34th week of pregnancy”.

The official stated that around 7,000 women gave birth to their children and then returned home while giving their Argentinian lawyers the duty to apply for Argentinian citizenship for the newborn and the parents.

“In Putin’s regime, not agreeing to the war is enough for one to go to jail or for members of her family to be sent to the frontline of battle,” he said.

Ukraine on Friday (February 10) claimed that two Russian missiles violated the airspace of Romania on their way to Ukraine. Romania is a NATO member. Ukrainian claim was, however, refuted by Romania. Ukraine's armed forces chief said that Russian missiles crossed Romania and Moldova's airspace as they charted their course to Ukraine.

Romania detected an "aerial target launched from the Black Sea from a ship of the Russian Federation" but "at no point did it intersect with Romania's airspace," the ministry of defence said. &nbsp;

"The closest point of the target's trajectory from Romania's airspace was registered by the radar systems at approximately 35 kilometres (22 miles) north-east of the border," the statement added.&nbsp;

Two Romanian Air Force MiG-21 LanceR aircraft on air policing duty under NATO command were sent towards the north of Romania "to supplement our reaction options," the statement added.&nbsp;

In spite of official denials, if it comes to light in future that the airspace was indeed violated, it would mark first such instance involving Romania. In NATO alliance, attack against one member is considered to be attack against all others as well. &nbsp;

Neighbouring Moldova has confirmed it detected "a missile that crossed the airspace of Moldova" and has summoned the Russian ambassador.&nbsp;

Ukraine claims Russian missiles entered Romanian airspace, Romania denies

Amid the ongoing Russian invasion, a Ukrainian governor claims that Moscow is pouring reinforcements into eastern Ukraine and signalled a possibility of a new offensive in the region, on Monday (February 6). Similarly, the Ukrainian president’s office, also said that intense fighting has been raging in the past couple of weeks in and around the city of Bakhmut and the nearby towns of Soledar and Vuhledar. However, British intelligence, on Tuesday, said that it is unlikely that Moscow has enough forces to change the course of the conflict in the upcoming weeks.&nbsp;

The aforementioned cities are located in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region which along with its neighbouring Luhansk region makes up the Donbas region which borders Russia. Kyiv is also anticipating a major offensive from Moscow which they believe could be “symbolic” as the one-year anniversary of Russia’s “special military operation” approaches on February 24.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian governor of the mainly Russian-occupied Luhansk province, Serhiy Haidai, in a recent interview with Ukrainian television said that the shelling in the region has subsided and they are seeing more and more of Moscow’s reserves being deployed in their direction and additional equipment also being brought in.

Furthermore, the governor also spoke about how this ammunition is different than before, “it is not round-the-clock shelling anymore. They are slowly starting to save, getting ready for a full-scale offensive,” said Haidai. He added, “It will most likely take them 10 days to gather reserves. After Feb. 15 we can expect (this offensive) at any time,” as per Reuters. While Ukraine itself has been planning a spring offensive and launching a counterattack to recapture some of its occupied territory and is waiting for the long-range missiles and battle tanks promised by the Western allies.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian presidential office, on Monday, said that at least one civilian had been killed and 10 others were injured after Russian shelling over the past 24 hours. Among those injured five people were from Kharkiv city where Russian shells struck residential buildings and a university, Ukraine claims.&nbsp;

On Sunday, David Arakhamia, head of Zelensky’s parliamentary bloc had said that Reznikov would be transferred to another ministerial job but the next day backtracked and said there will be no changes in “personnel changes in the defence sector this week.” Meanwhile, Zelensky also said, “In a number of regions, particularly those on the border or on the front line, we will appoint leaders with military experience.”

Russian forces continue to attack eastern Ukraine, new offensive by Moscow possible in 10 days, says governor

A report published by the Ukrainian military claimed that convicted women are being recruited by Russia from penal colonies in Ukraine's occupied regions to help Moscow in its war effort.

The military of Ukraine, in its intelligence report, stated that attempts are being made by the Russian forces to "replenish" their army.

“In order to replenish the losses in manpower, the enemy is trying to attract convicted women to participate in hostilities. Over the course of a week, the occupiers recruited about 50 people from the women's correctional colony of the city of Snizhne in the temporarily occupied territory of the Donetsk region. It is also known that they were sent to the territory of the Russian Federation for training,” said the statement.

A partial mobilisation was ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin in September 2022 which was aimed at adding 300,000 reservists to support the country's military campaign.

However, according to the latest reports, homeless people and those who have very less military experience were being recruited by Russia to reinforce its army.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Ukraine's Kharkiv said that the city's centre was hit by two Russian S-300 missiles.

Russia 'recruiting female prisoners' to contribute to Ukraine war, report claims

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that Ukraine will fight to hold the 'fortress' city of Bakhmut for as long as it could. Bakhmut is a city located in eastern Ukraine. Zelensky urged the West to supply long-range weapons to Ukraine to help it push Russia out of Donbas.

"Nobody will give away Bakhmut. We will fight for as long as we can. We consider Bakhmut our fortress," Zelenskiy told a news conference with top European Union officials following a summit in Kyiv.

"If weapons (supplies) are quickened, specifically long range weapons, we not only will not leave Bakhmut, but we will also begin to de-occupy Donbas, which has been occupied since 2014," he said.

The city of Bakhmut has become the focal point of Ukrainian resistance to Russia's invasion and of Moscow’s drive to regain battlefield momentum.

Russian officials have said Russian forces are encircling Bakhmut from several directions and battling to take control of a road which is also an important supply route for Ukrainian forces.

Zelensky said Russia would continue to push in the east but that Ukrainian forces would be able to hold out until more Western weapons arrived.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year. After sustained territorial gains in the initial months of the conflict, Russian forces have had to retreat from many regions in the face of Ukrainian counterattack.

The head of the EU's executive Commission and the chairman of the 27 EU national leaders have travelled to Kyiv to demonstrate support for Ukraine as the first anniversary of Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of its neighbour approaches.

Zelenskiy, flanked by the EU leaders at a news conference, said European sanctions should aim to ensure Russia cannot rebuild its military capability. And he had a defiant message on Bakhmut, the focal point of Ukrainian resistance to Russia's invasion and of Moscow’s drive to regain battlefield momentum.

Zelenskiy has called for more punitive EU sanctions against Russia, though new measures the bloc is preparing for the anniversary of the invasion are set to fall short of his government's demands.

Ukraine applied to join the EU days after Russia invaded last year. The EU has embraced the application, although it has rebuffed Ukraine's calls for a fast track to membership while the country is at war.

"The EU will support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people against Russia's ongoing war of aggression for as long as it takes," the EU leaders were expected to say a joint statement, a draft of which was seen by Reuters in advance.

On the other hand, two diplomats of the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN committed acts which were incompatible with the Headquarters Agreement and they would have to leave Austria, the foreign ministry statement further said.&nbsp;

Diplomatic expulsions have been rare in Austria,&nbsp;which enjoyed close relations with Russia before its offensive in Ukraine&nbsp;that will soon complete one year.&nbsp;

In April last year, Austria had expelled four Russian diplomats as part of a coordinated European Union reaction after the discovery of alleged killings of Ukrainian civilians by Moscow in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha, a report by news agency AFP on Thursday said.&nbsp;

And in 2020, a Russian diplomat accused of espionage was expelled. Since this year, Austria has expelled nine Russian diplomats.&nbsp;

Vienna also has a reputation for being a den of spies. The extensive diplomatic presence allows stationing intelligence agents there under a diplomatic cover, granting them diplomatic immunity, the report added.&nbsp;

Austria expels four Russian diplomats, asks them to leave within a week

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday (February 2) accused the United States of having been directly involved in Nord Stream gas pipeline explosions. He was speaking in an interview on state TV and he offered no evidence to substantiate his claims. Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin had accused Britain of blowing up the pipelines. The accusation was denied promptly by the UK then.

In the interview, Lavrov also claimed that the West was lying about Russia's refusal to negotiate to end Ukraine crisis. He additionally alleged that there were attempts from the West to turn Moldova, Georgia and ex-Soviet republics in Central Asia against Russia.&nbsp;

Lavrov, on Thursday, accused the West of wanting to inflict lasting defeat against Moscow. He lashed out against&nbsp;European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen as she visited Kyiv.

"Ursula von der Leyen... said that the outcome of the war should be the defeat of Russia, the kind of defeat that for decades, for many decades, Russia cannot restore its economy," Lavrov said in comments aired on Russian state television.

They are the largest platform for inclusion and diversity in sports, capturing the attention of the world," Svitolina said in a statement on Twitter. "With this in mind we must stick to banning Russian and Belarusian athletes... that we are united in the sanctions imposed against Russia and Belarus and that there are consequences for the heinous acts of their governments. 
 
"Their lives cannot continue as normal and the world, nor the Russian and Belarusian people, can be ignorant of the atrocities they are committing in Ukraine."

Svitolina, married to fellow&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;player Gael Monfils, reached her career-high ranking of world number three in 2017 and has not played since giving birth to her first child last year.

Russian FM Sergei Lavrov to participate in G20 foreign ministers meeting in New Delhi in March

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, speaking during an interview on Monday, said that it was “quite possible” that Moscow may end the New START nuclear arms control treaty with the United States after 2026.

While speaking to the RIA news agency, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said, “This is quite a possible scenario.”

In November 2022, US-Russia talks on the resumption of inspections under the New START treaty, which will expire in February 2026, were called off at the last minute. Both sides have failed to decide on a common time frame for new talks.

However, it is unclear what would happen after February 4, 2026, although the United States has hinted at its willingness to reach a follow-on agreement with Russia.

Russia's top arms control diplomat Ryabkov alleged the US of ignoring the interest of Russia and dismantling the architecture of arms control in recent years.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov, while speaking to the Russian news agency TASS, said that Moscow is aware of the operations being conducted by the United States against them in the information space by recruiting hackers and providing training to Ukraine's IT army.

"It is telling that the United States is putting its aggressive policies into action. They made no attempt to conceal the fact that their cyber command is conducting operations against our country. We are well aware that Washington is aggressively recruiting hackers, training the so-called IT Army of Ukraine, and using information and communication technologies of their partners and controlled private companies to carry out cyberattacks against Russia's information infrastructure," Syromolotov said while speaking to TASS.

He added that Washington and its allies have been supporting risky digital tactics. The Russian deputy foreign minister said that the United States is "openly moving towards the militarisation of the information domain," although the majority of United Nations member states wish that the information technologies be used peacefully.

Minister Syromolotov further alleged the US of "burning the bridges" to continue any kind of dialogue with Moscow over global cybersecurity issues.

"We don’t see any prerequisites for resuming dialogue on global cybersecurity with Washington at this point. I would like to reiterate that it wasn’t our choice, it was the Americans who burned the bridges. We won’t run after anyone. We aren’t interested in dialogue for the sake of dialogue. When those overseas sober up from their Russophobic frenzy and get in the mood for a constructive conversation, then we will probably think about resuming contact," he stated.

Syromolotov further stated that dialogue on the cybersecurity issue between the Kremlin and the White House was suspended by the US, citing the military operation being carried out by Russia in Ukraine.
