India skipper Rohit Sharma lamented team's performance with the bat after a crushing 10-wicket loss in second Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test on Sunday (Dec 8). India lost the match two hours into the third day of the Test after scoring only 180 and 175 across two innings in the day-night Adelaide match.

"When you come to Australia, I feel the best chance of winning a Test match is by putting runs on the board," he said after the loss.

"We were 30-40 runs short with the bat in the first innings. And then there were opportunities when Australia were batting and we failed to take those chances [Travis Head was dropped on 78; he made 140]. And obviously when you miss those chances, it is never easy and it's not going to be easy. The opposition will always make you pay for it and that's what happened. And then in the second innings as well, we thought the conditions were better. Again, we were not good enough with the bat," added Rohit.

India's failure with the bat is becoming more and more evident with the team not able to cross 200-run mark in first innings of the four of the previous Tests they have played. Out of those four games two were at home against New Zealand.

In Australia, India have failed to cross 200 three times in four innings - further showing their struggle with the bat. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who made his debut in Perth Test, has been the top scorer for India in all those three innings where they failed to touch 200.

After the loss, the five-Test series stands equal at 1-1 with the third match scheduled to be played at the iconic Gabba stadium in Brisbane from December 14.

Shami was out of action for around one year following an ankle injury during the 2023 home ODI World Cup. He returned to competitive cricket last month, playing for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, and is currently plying his trade for his state Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.&nbsp;

Though Shami declared himself 100% match-fit ahead of the BGT during a promotional event, a last-minute lapse in his rehab forced the selectors to drop him from the marquee Tests Down Under.

Speaking to the media after the end of the second Test in Adelaide, which the hosts won by 10 wickets, Rohit shed light on Shami’s potential return to the Test side with three matches remaining.

"We are just monitoring him because while playing Syed Mushtaq Ali, he got some swelling in his knee, which hampers his preparation to come and play a Test match. We want to be very careful, we don't want to bring him here, he pulls up sore or something happens.

"We want to be more than 100% sure with him because it has been a long time. We don't want to put pressure on him to come here and do the job for the team. There are some professionals monitoring, we will take a call based on what those guys feel. They are the ones watching him every game, how he pulls up after the game, after bowling four overs, standing for 20 overs. But the door is open for him to come and play anytime,” Rohit said of Shami in Adelaide.&nbsp;

<h2>Shami closing in on complete fitness</h2>

Shami is back in the domestic circuit but hasn’t hit the right notes yet. Since picking seven wickets against Madhya Pradesh in his first competitive game on his return, the right-arm seamer has featured in seven SMAT matches, returning with eight wickets.&nbsp;

Though there is no official confirmation on Shami’s return, should he stay fit and suffer no setback on his road to recovery, he could soon be on the flight to Australia.

BGT, Pink-Ball Test: Australia level series in Adelaide after Cummins, Starc heroics

India batters Shubman Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma lost their wickets on two extremely unplayable balls on Day 2 (Dec 7) of the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test in the second innings. Gill was cleaned up by a full ball of Mitchell Stars while Rohit was bowled by a beauty bowled by Pat Cummins under the lights in Adelaide.

Rohit, who was batting down the order, was tentatively poking a ball on the off stump when a Cummins delivery left his bat ever so little and hit the top of his off stump.

Gill was batting nicely on 28 off 29 balls when Starc sent a searing full ball which took 'banana swing' before crashing onto Gill's middle stumps. Have a look at the video below:

“The previous Test, you have a 200-run partnership between Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. You don't want to break that, they have that momentum and confidence. Besides, Rohit Sharma hasn't played any serious cricket for more than a month, the last time he played for India was November 3, we are at December 6,” Gavaskar said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

“I actually disagree with what Sunny (Gavaskar) said. I feel he should've come back in the side and open the batting. KL Rahul has been a fringe player around this team for a number of years. Yes, he got his chance and he played in Perth.&nbsp;

“But what it seems to be now is that Rohit Sharma is going to spend the rest of his career down the order Because KL Rahul has played well, Shubman Gill looked good in the first innings, so he looks certain.&nbsp;

Clarke is optimistic of both Rohit and Kohli being among runs and going past their poor form. He added, "I think they are probably coming into Australian conditions where they both like playing. Rohit Sharma plays fast bowling as good as anyone in that team. Certainly, short-pitch bowling – he'll take the Aussie on with that hook shot and he plays it up over third man. And Virat is class. His record his phenomenal. He has scored six hundreds in 13 Tests, averages over 50 in Australian conditions. My brain doesn't say they're going to come here and fail. They will be tough to get out and I think the Australian bowlers will need to find a way to dismiss them both early in the innings as often as they possibly can."

Kohli averages&nbsp;54.08 with six hundred and four fifties in Australia in 13 Tests. Meanwhile, Rohit averages a mere 31.38 including three half-centuries.

“Maybe because they're playing on different wickets in India that are probably for the fast bowlers a bit more, maybe because there's more high-quality fast bowlers in India now that they're not playing as much spin bowling as they did,” the former Aussie skipper explained.

He also mentioned IPL and the aggressive nature of batting among modern batters as another reason.

“Maybe it's the IPL or how much IPL cricket they're playing that the younger players are learning the game that way rather than the way that players did 15 or 20 years ago,” Ponting opined.

Following suffering a maiden Test series whitewash at home against New Zealand, the BCCI alongside the captain Rohit, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, held a marathon six-hour long review meeting discussing what went wrong, and with the Australian series on the horizon, how can they turn the tables around.

“It was a six-hour marathon meeting which was obviously on the cards after such a debacle. India are going on a tour of Australia and the BCCI would obviously like to ensure that the team is back on track and would like to know how the think-tank (Gambhir-Rohit-Agarkar) are going about it," a senior BCCI source privy to development was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

The report also suggested that the BCCI was unhappy with team management’s call to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the final Test at the Wankhede and prepare a rank turner, which eventually cost India.

“Bumrah’s absence was discussed although it was a precautionary move. Opting for a rank turner despite India not faring well on these tracks are some of the issues that came up for discussion," the source concluded.&nbsp;

The right-handed batter played a game for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy this season and featured for India B in the Duleep Trophy, though without tasting success in both.&nbsp;

"When I am on the ground, I keep noticing how his body language is, how calm he is under pressure situations, how he talks to the bowlers, how he treats everyone on the field and off the field."

"Most importantly, from a leader, you expect how much time he is spending with you to have that comfort. I try to replicate that. When I am not on the ground, I try and spend time with my teammates, have a meal with them, travel together,” Suryakumar continued.&nbsp;

"Everyone has different skill set, and they also want to come out and express themselves. So that freedom is very important when they get onto the field, and that is what I try and give."

India, who will enter the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy after suffering a maiden Test whitewash against New Zealand at home, is under pressure to deliver and win in Australia for the record third straight time. India, however, is also fighting for the spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final next year.

Chappell addressed Team India’s batting issues, including discussing their struggles against spin (at home) and extra bounce (away). Chappell opined that although some of their youngsters – Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill are in form, the touring side is aware and worried about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s dying reflexes, considering their age and performance lately.

The former Aussie legend added that if India tries to be over-aggressive in their shot selection Down Under, extra bounce might catch them up, further exposing their batting vulnerabilities.&nbsp;

“India have got some batting problems. I think Jaiswal is a very good-looking young player, a left-hand opener, I think Gill can really play. But then you've got Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who are both ageing, and you get to that point where people start talking about it, and maybe it starts to creep into your head a little bit (where you think), 'Am I getting to that age where it starts to go downhill?', and they're both at that age."&nbsp;

"The only thing I'd say against that is they're coming to Australia where the pitches are pretty good, but there'll be the extra bounce, and if they have gone over the top, then the extra bounce will find them out," Chappell said on Wide World of Sports’ Outside the Rope show.

Chappell reckons that India is overly relying on youngsters (Jaiswal, Gill, Sarfaraz Khan and even Dhruv Jurel) to deliver against the high-flying Aussies so much&nbsp;that the thought of them winning the third time could suffer a beating.

“They (India) have moved on Pujara, and they've moved on Rahane, and they've left Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, their best two players, but all of a sudden they've had a bit of a rocky period... and that has put pressure now on the younger guys and also their lower-order. You still need to make the bulk of your runs from your best players, and over the last probably 12 or 18 months that hasn't been the case for India,” he continued.

The Optus Stadium in Perth will host the first Test starting November 22,&nbsp;with Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney scheduled to stage the remaining four matches.
