Rishabh Pant was having a torrid time at the highest level prior to India's tour of Australia in 2020-21. Ahead of the epic tour Down Under, Pant was under the scanner for his keeping, fitness concerns and shot selections as many former cricketers and experts called for his omission.

Nonetheless, the script changed emphatically for Pant ever since he was included in the playing XI during the second Test, at the MCG, Melbourne, during the Australia tour. The left-hander played a gutsy and match-saving 97 in the third and penultimate Test, at the SCG, Sydney, before playing the best knock of his career, so far, with a match-winning 89 not out in the final Test, at Brisbane, to help India win the series 2-1.

Recently, Pant recalled his SCG Test heroics, where he battled injury to slam a memorable 97 and helped the visitors to a draw on the final day.

Speaking to India women's star cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues, on Dream 11, Pant said, "We were under pressure, they gave us some 400 something. Injury happened in the first innings. He bowled a bounce, it kept low and it hit my elbow and I was unable to move my hand in the first innings. I didn't keep in the second innings. Wriddhi (Wriddhiman Saha) bhai did all the keeping."

"We went for a scan and it was bone bruise. It wasn't a major injury, but it was very painful. We were talking to the physios because I had to bat, by hook or by crook. So we decided to take injection to help with the pain. We have to see in the nets obviously, at first. So, I took the painkiller injection during the game, went to the nets and I was trying to hold the bat but it was paining. I couldn't hold my bat properly. After this there's Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood and they will be bowling a lot faster," he pointed out.

Pant opined, “I was just telling myself, 'you have to do this, there is no choice.' Firstly, there was no intention of winning the match. First goal was to draw, because it was the last day and we needed 400 runs. Then there was an idea of making me bat at No.5 because I was injured and even if I got out then the batters to come could still look to remake. It was still paining and on top of that I took a painkiller pill too."

"Rahane got out before lunch and I got tensed. I went inside, I couldn't get my way, pressure was building, Aussies were sledging and because they were up in the game and they wanted to win. Then it was my threshold, mid on was up and he bowled me there and I hit him over mid on for a boundary. Next ball he bowled there, after a few overs, and I hit him for a six. Next over the long on was back and I was playing my normal game and I was getting runs," he revealed.

"Then there was good partnership that happened between me a Pujara and suddenly the momentum of the match changed and we were in a position to win the match. And slowly, my pain started lessening because I was concentrating entirely on every ball and so the focus on the pain went away.

"Then I scored 97. I was feeling bad, but not for missing out on my hundred because I felt that I could have won the match for India from there," added Pant.

While Pant couldn't lead India to a win in the third Test, he stood tall in the final Test with an attacking 89 not out at Australia's fortress, at The Gabba, Brisbane, to help Ajinkya Rahane-led visitors chase down 328 on the final day of the series.

Without then regular captain Virat Kohli, India bounced back in style -- riding on Pant, Washington Sundar, Md Siraj, Shubman Gill, Rahane, Pujara, Shardul Thakur, etc. -- to claim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1.

Couldn't hold my bat properly: Rishabh Pant recalls how he battled injury to help India save SCG Test

A lot has changed in Indian cricket post the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE. Since then, Rohit Sharma has taken charge of Team India across formats whereas Rahul Dravid succeeded Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the senior men's team. While the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha have been dropped from the Test side, youngsters such as Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Md Siraj and KL Rahul are rising in stature with each series.

Talking about Pant, the 24-year-old has seen massive growth in his international career since the India-Australia 2020-21 series Down Under. Since then, he has scored runs across all forms of the game and improved immensely as a wicketkeeper. Recently, India's batting coach Vikram Rathour heaped praise on the Indian youngster and feels that he is now a matured cricketer who cannot be dropped easily.

In this regard, Rathour told The Week, "He has suddenly grown up. Rohit and Dravid are in the saddle now, and he knows he is an important player in the India setup. He has now matured as a player. He is getting better and better, but there is still a long way to cover."

Rathour also feels that Pant has it in him to succeed MS Dhoni and become the next finisher for Team India. Following Dhoni's international retirement, the role of a finisher has been fulfilled by the likes of Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja, however, Rathour feels Pant is suited to make an impact lower down the order (despite being experimented to bat at No. 4).

"He will be a finisher at number five or six, he knows that. Nobody is pushing him to get a hundred in ODIs. He will always be an impact player and if he is consistently getting 40-50 and winning it for the team, then that is fine," Rathour added.

Pant is currently involved with the Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2022 edition. Under him, DC have won and lost a game each after their opening two encounters in the 15th season.

Rishabh Pant has become an all-format player for Team India. Things, however, weren't the same for the swashbuckling left-hander post India's 2019 ODI World Cup campaign. After IPL 2020, questions were raised for his shot selection, fitness and wicketkeeping skills as many former cricketers and experts slammed his approach towards the game.

Nonetheless, Pant answered his critics in style after the conclusion of the 13th IPL season, in the UAE. The 24-year-old got a chance in India's MCG Test versus Australia during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and hasn't looked behind ever since. Since then, Pant has slammed six half-centuries and two tons in red-ball format, four fifties in ODIs and has played some vital cameos in the shortest format as well. Moreover, his keeping has improved leaps and bounds whereas he is also the Delhi Capitals (DC) captain in the IPL.

I was talking to Rohit bhai and Mahi ]Dhoni] bhai a little bit. But mostly I kept believing in myself."

"It was obviously very challenging. That was a low phase in my life. You feel good when you come from hard times and play like that (50 off 101 against England). But, at the same time, I do not think of either [fifties] too much. I just play on the merit of the ball. [However,] I did find that I could control my instincts better," Pant added.

Delhi Capitals will look to continue their winning run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as they take on Gujarat Titans in Mumbai on Saturday. It was a mixed outing for Delhi Capitals in their first game as Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets but the other bowlers failed to contain the Mumbai batsmen. In the batting department, a number of batsmen got good starts but it came down to the lower middle order to salvage the victory.

The second game of the IPL 2022 edition saw the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) lock horns with the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday afternoon. In the first afternoon game of the season, the five-time winners MI franchise went down to Rishabh Pant & Co. by four wickets in defence of a challening 178 at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.

Opting to bowl first, the DC camp rode on Kuldeep Yadav's 3 for 18 as MI posted 177-5 courtesy skipper Rohit (41) and Ishan Kishan's 48-ball 81 not out. In reply, the Delhi camp lost Prithvi Shaw and Tim Seifert after good starts whereas the big guns such as Pant and Rovman Powell perished soon. At 72 for 5, not many would've given a chance to the DC camp but Axar Patel's 17-ball 38* and Lalit Yadav's 38-ball 48*, along with Shardul Thakur's 11-ball 22, propelled DC to a stunning four-wicket win.

IPL 2022: Rohit's MI attain unwanted record after going down to DC, lose opening game for 10th time in a row

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians will be looking to make a fresh start when they lock horns with Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals in their opening game of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Sunday (March 27). The match will be staged at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, Maharashtra and will be the first tie of the doubleheader Sunday.

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians endured a disappointing campaign in the IPL 2021 last year as they failed to make it to the playoffs despite coming close. Mumbai Indians missed out on a spot in the top fur due to low net run rate and will be hoping to produce a better show this season.

After finishing as finalists in the 2020 edition of the tournament, Delhi Capitals continued their phenomenal run under new skipper Rishabh Pant last season. Delhi Capitals topped the points table to secure a spot in the playoffs. However, Pant & Co. ended up faltering in the playoffs to miss out on a spot in the final.

Both Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians have managed to strengthen their new-look squad at the mega auction last month and will be looking to make a winning start to the season on Sunday. While Mumbai Indians roped in the likes of Ishan Kishan, Tim David and young prodigy Dewald Brewis among others at the mega auction, Delhi Capitals bought the likes of Shardul Thakur, Rovman Powell and Kamlesh Nagarkoti among others to build a formidable squad once again.

Earlier, knocks from Ishan Kishan and captain Rohit Sharma led Mumbai Indians to a total of 177/5 in their Indian Premier League 2022 match against Delhi Capitals.

Chasing 178, Delhi got off to a bad start as they lost three wickets inside the first six overs. Murugan Ashwin was the pick for Rohit Sharma as bowler removed Tim Seifert for 21 and Mandeep Singh in his first over for Mumbai Indians.

In the very next over which was the 5th of the innings, Tymal Mills sent DC captain Rishabh Pant back in the hut. With a short length delivery just outside off stump, Pant looked to cut over point but got the outside edge that travelled straight to Tim David at third man.

Delhi's score read 46/3 after the first powerplay.

Lalit Yadav then joined opener, Prithvi Shaw, on the crease as both batters kept runs clocking for Delhi. With DC looking to gain momentum in the middle overs, Basil Thampi struck twice in the 10th over to dismantle the chase of Capitals.

Thampi first sent set opener, Prithvi Shaw, for 38 and then packed the bags of Rovman Powell in the same over.

Thampi struck again in the 14th over to remove dangerous-looking Shardul Thakur for 22. MI bowler got his third wicket of the day as Thakur went for the pull but the ball was fuller for the shot and hence got the top edge that went to Rohit Sharma at covers.

Axar Patel then joined Lalit Yadav in the middle and both batters valiantly took the charge against MI bowlers as Delhi needed 28 runs from 18 balls.

The 18th over proved vital as Patel and Yadav smashed Daniel Sams for 24 runs which included three mammoth sixes as Delhi ended any hope of Mumbai.

IPL 2022: Kishan's 81* in vain as Lalit, Axar power Delhi Capitals to four-wicket win against Mumbai Indians

Match 2 of the ongoing IPL 2022 edition will see the most successful team, i.e. Mumbai Indians (MI) face the young and exciting Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals on Sunday afternoon (March 27) at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. After the 15th season got off to a perfect start with defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locking horns with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), on March 26 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, expect another mouth-watering contest between the two sides.

Talking about the MI Paltans, the Men in Blue are a new-look side but have retained their core players. The likes of skipper Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard and Suryakumar Yadav will form the nucleus of the franchise whereas the new additions in the form of Tim David, Tymal Mills, Dewald Brevis, Fabian Allen will be eager to add to the side. It will be interesting to see what combination does the Mahela Jayawardene-led MI franchise decide upon aganist DC's young guns. On the other hand, DC lost the services of Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Marcus Stoinis, Kagiso Rabada but still have much firepower to rely upon, with Rovman Powell, Mustafizur Rahman, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur, David Warner, Anrich Nortje, Axar Patel.

Nonetheless, DC's biggest worry is the availability of players. Many of their superstar cricketers haven't joined the side and will miss the opening few games. Hence, DC's bench strength will be put to test and a young captain in Rishabh will have to cleverly manage his resources.

Match prediction for MI vs DC: While it is an underrated rivalry between the two sides, MI just have an edge over DC by being marginally ahead (16-14) in head-to-head tally. In the last season, DC completed a double over MI after losing four back-to-back games, including the finale, in IPL 2020. Expect plenty of runs and some assitance for the slower bowlers as the game progresses. While it is tough to predict a winner at this stage of the tournament, expect MI to edge past DC on experience.

The Delhi Capitals will be coming to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season with a new-look squad after letting go of a number of big names ahead of this year’s mega auction. However, the only constant in the team will be skipper Rishabh Pant who has enjoyed a rich vein of form in the white-ball series against Sri Lanka and he will once again be the man to watch out for DC.

Ahead of the new season, DC head coach Ricky Ponting spoke to WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo and the ex-Australia skipper spoke about what the team expects from Pant.

“He (Pant) is a brilliant person and a brilliant player and how he approaches the game is similar to his personality. He is a fun-loving guy and that shows in his game. With players like that, you have to take the good with the bad and I do not want him to lose his exuberance which wins matches.

“There have been a lot of comparisons between Rishabh and Adam Gilchrist already and the reason is because their batting is very similar. They are not always going to play conventionally but when it works, they will be winning you matches. I want Rishabh to take the games head on and that is the approach that helps in winning the games for us,” Ponting said during the interview.

Ponting has been a part of the Delhi Capitals franchise for quite some time as the head coach but he is currently not looking out for national team jobs. When asked about the vacancies in both Australia and England sides, Ponting said that the timing is not right for him to apply for the positions.

I don’t think that I will ever apply for the England job. I have said it on record that when you are a head coach of a national team, it is a 10–11-month job. But I am trying a good balance in family life and professional life. I spend three months with Delhi Capitals, do a bit of TV with channel 7 back home and spend some time planning the season. I believe that you need to have the right situation if you want to become an international coach and it is very difficult with a young family

IPL 2022: Not Rishabh Pant! Shane Watson reserves special praise for Delhi Capitals' young gun

Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals will be hoping to make it to their third straight playoffs this season after impressing in the last two editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Delhi Capitals had made it to their maiden final in IPL 2020 and topped the league stage of the tournament last year to make it to the playoffs.

However, they had failed to secure a spot in the final last season after losses against Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders in the playoffs. DC have lost a number of superstars ahead of the new season but have also managed to improve their squad with some quality signings at the IPL 2022 mega auction last month.

DC lost the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Shikhar Dhawan, Marcus Stoinis and Shreyas Iyer among others but have signed David Warner, Shardul Thakur, Rovman Powell and Kuldeep Yadav to bolster their squad ahead of IPL 2022. While many believe Delhi Capitals can once again emerge as a strong contender for the title this year, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra thinks otherwise.

With the likes of Warner, Marsh and Mustafizur Rahman likely to miss the start of the tournament and doubts over Anrich Nortje's fitness, Chopra believes Delhi Capitals can easily lose two of their first three matches this season. Delhi Capitals will open their IPL 2022 campaign against Mumbai Indians on Sunday (March 27).

"I am slightly worried about this team. They can easily lose two of the first three matches. If they lose three out of three, there is a possibility, you can't say. Someone might win you a match with a one-man show but as a team, this does not give you a lot of confidence," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

While Chopra stated that the unavailability of the players is one of the concerns for DC, the former India cricketer also explained that not much can be expected in terms of consistency and big match temperament from youngsters like Kona Srikar Bharat, Sarfaraz Khan and Rovman Powell. Chopra said he won't be surprised if DC fail to make it to the playoffs this year.

If they start slowly, you never know which way they will head," Chopra added.

Rohit Sharma went on to clean sweep his maiden Test series as a skipper as India beat Sri Lanka by 238 runs in the Day-Night Test match here at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to sweep the two-match series 2-0.

In challenging conditions to bat under the lights the Indian batters struggled but Shreyas Iyer's strategy to attack paid him rich dividends as he top-scored for India in both innings scoring 92 and 67.

His superlative performance helped him earn the 'Player of the Match' award as well as the praise of his skipper.

"Shreyas just carried on from where he left off in the T20 series against Sri Lanka. He seemed to carry that form into the Test series. He knew he was stepping into the big shoes of guys like Rahane and Pujara, but he has everything that he requires. He will be better now when he starts travelling," said Indian captain Virat Kohli.

Ravindra Jadeja was India's star performer in the previous match in Mohali performing with both bat and ball.

"We have seen Jadeja grow as a batter and he seems to get better and better. He strengthens the team, and he's also improving as a bowler. And he`s a gun fielder, so he is a complete package," told Rohit Sharma.

Wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant played a knock of 39 of 26 balls in the first innings and scored the fastest Test half-century by an Indian in a Test match breaking Kapil Dev's record of achieving the same in 30 balls way back in 1982 against Pakistan in Karachi.

Pant also affected five dismissals in the match.

His all-around performance in the series helped him bag the 'Player of the Series' award.

"Rishabh seems to get better with each game that he plays. Especially in these conditions. We saw it in the England series (last year) and now. A couple of catches and stumpings showed how confident he is," said Rohit Sharma.

India were playing its third Test match on home soil and they have won all three inside three days.

"It's been a good run and I have enjoyed it personally and as a team. We wanted to achieve a few things as a team, and we have done that. Pink-ball Tests are challenging. We never knew what it was like to play with the pink ball in India, but we are learning to make those adjustments. The crowd just makes it more special," told Rohit Sharma.

India wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant shattered the legendary Kapil Dev's 40-year-old record on Sunday (March 13) as he smashed the fastest fifty by an Indian in Test cricket. Pant notched up his half-century off just 28 balls in the ongoing pink-ball Test against Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Pant went after the Sri Lankan bowling attack and took them to the cleaners as he slammed seven fours and two sixes in his enthralling knock to help India extend their lead. With the help of the half-century from the wicket-keeper batter and Shreyas Iyer, India managed to pst 303/9 (declared) on the board in their second innings to hand Sri Lanka a huge target of 447 runs.

Pant earned praise from all corners after his destructive knock against Sri Lanka and was also lauded by veteran India wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik. Karthik said the left-hander was already on his way towards attaining greatness and stated that he might finish as one of India's greatest wicket-keepers along with the legendary MS Dhoni.

Karthik further added that Pant also reminded him of someone like Virender Sehwag, who was known for his ability to take down bowling attacks single-handedly across all formats of the game. Karthik said Pant's natural game is about taking risks and he has been extremely good with it so far.

"Rishabh Pant has the game to take risks and consistently be good at it. Also, he reminds me of Virender Sehwag, in the sense that when the field is up, he has the ability to hit boundaries at ease right from the get-go and that makes him a very special Test player. Sri Lanka ended day two on 28-1 in their second innings after India set them a mammoth target of 447 for victory in the second and final test on Sunday.

Jasprit Bumrah struck in the first over to trap opener Lahiru Thirimanne lbw for a duck but skipper Dimuth Karunaratne (10) and Kusal Mendis (16) saw out the final few overs of the day, with the tourists still 419 runs behind.

Having bowled out Sri Lanka for 109 in the first session, India batted 69 overs before declaring on 303-9 with Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant notching up half-centuries while other Indian batsmen failed to go on from solid starts.

Skipper Rohit Sharma, playing his 400th international match, holed out in the deep to fall four runs short of his fifty while Hanuma Vihari (35) was bowled by spinner Praveen Jayawickrama as he tried to sweep.

Jayawickrama struck again to surprise Virat Kohli (13) with a delivery that turned sharply and kept low, trapping him lbw in identical fashion to his dismissal in the first innings.

Kohli gave a wry smile as silence descended on the M Chinnaswamy Stadium with a near-capacity crowd hoping to see the former captain and star of the IPL franchise end his century drought.

But Pant took the game away from the Lankans by going after the bowling as soon as he walked to the crease, bringing up his fifty with seven fours and two sixes.

Made from 28 balls, his half-century was the fastest by an Indian batsman, breaking the record set by Kapil Dev 40 years ago, before he skied a delivery from Jayawickrama who took the catch himself.

Iyer helped guide India to a lead beyond 400 with his second half-century of the match to add to his fine knock of 92 on a turning track in the first innings.

With nine boundaries, Iyer looked comfortable at the crease before he was outfoxed by a Lasith Embuldeniya delivery that rapped him on the pads and sent him back to the pavilion for 67.

"It was quite challenging. A kind of wicket where any ball could get you out. It will be challenging for Sri Lanka tomorrow as well," Vihari said.

"I don't think we planned on bowling this evening. But because we lost wickets, we thought we could have a crack at them for 35-40 minutes."

Known for his attacking style of play irrespective of the format, Pant continued his natural stroke play against Sri Lanka during India's second innings as he went after the visitors' bowling attack. Showing no mercy against the spinners, Pant smashed seven fours and two sixes to race to his fifty in just 28 deliveries.

Shardul Thakur is on the third spot in the list of fastest fifties by Indians in Tests as he had scored a 31-ball fifty against England at the Oval last year.

“His batting is phenomenal and we can speak a lot about that. But I think the hallmark of this Test personally for him would be how well he kept,” said Karthik on Cricbuzz.

“Pathum Nissanka's catch was brilliant. Whenever an offspinner bowls into the rough a little bit and the ball is turning in, it is a hard one to take because you never know which one is going to straighten and which one will turn. On top of that if it deviates off the bat it becomes that much harder and that is where I like Pant. His hands were at the right place,” he said.

India wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant missed out on his fifth Test hundred as he was dismissed for 96 off 97 balls during India's first innings on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test between India and Sri Lanka at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Friday. Pant looked in great touch and was smacking the Sri Lankan spinners all around the park before falling short of a well-deserved ton by just 4 runs.

The left-hander came out to bat at number five for India when the hosts were 170/3 after Virat Kohli's dismissal for 45 off 76 deliveries. India lost Hanuma Vihari's wicket too soon after Pant's arrival as they were left reeling on 175/4 before the left-hander combined with Shreyas Iyer (27) to add 53 runs for the fifth wicket.

Pant went on to notch up his half-century after Iyer's departure and added another crucial stand of 104 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (45 not out) for the sixth wicket. He shifted gears after reaching his fifty and raced towards his hundred by smashing two sixes and two fours in the 76th over from Lasith Embuldeniya.

Pant looked set to reach his hundred comfortably, however, he was dismissed by Suranga Lakmal on 96. Pant has now been dismissed in the nervous 90s on five occasions in Test cricket and has equalled MS Dhoni's unwanted record. Dhoni and Pant are two Indian wicket-keeper batters with most dismissals in the nervous 90s in Test cricket.

While Dhoni scored six centuries in Test cricket, Pant has already slammed four hundreds in the longest format and is likely to finish with many more centuries in his career. He has been one of India's best performers with the bat in Test cricket for the last couple of years.

Rishabh Pant misses out on his hundred as India post 357/6 on Day 1 of 1st Test against Sri Lanka

Team India locked horns with Sri Lanka in the two-match Test series opener at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Friday (March 04). Former captain Virat Kohli headlined the day's proceedings as he featured in his 100th game in whites and, thus, joined an elite list of Indian cricketers to have done the same, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Sourav Ganguly, Kapil Dev, Virender Sehwag, etc.

Coming out to bat, after India won the toss and were 80/2, Kohli joined forces with No. 3 batter Hanuma Vihari and stitched an impressive 90-run stand for the third-wicket before falling for a good-looking 45 (76). On the other hand, the likes of captain Rohit Sharma (29), Mayank Agarwal (33), Vihari (58) and Shreyas Iyer (27) also got starts but were all back in the pavillion by the end of second session.

Speaking on the post-Tea show on Star Sports on Day 1 of the first Test, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir shared a word of advice for the Indian batters following their dismissals.

“One of the major concerns is that the bat is in the line of pads. When that happens, it is difficult to play deliveries that turn away as well as those that don't turn,” Gambhir noted.

Reflecting on Kohli and Mayank's dismissals, Gambhir said, "If you keep your bat ahead of your pad, you will be beaten only on one edge. When you look at Mayank Agarwal's dismissal, he was beaten on the inside edge. In Virat Kohli's case, he was beaten on the outside edge. So, it is very important to have your bat ahead of your pad.”

“This is usually taught in formative years. Nowadays, you play so much limited-overs cricket that you lose your basics, the good habits die down. You've concentrated significantly on fast bowling, so I believe Indian batters have a scope for improvement in tackling spin,” added Gambhir.

Riding on Rishabh Pant's 96 and Ravindra Jadeja's 45 not out India reached 357-6 at stumps on Day 1 in Mohali. They will like to stretch the total beyond the 450-run mark on Day 2.

Indian batters have a scope for improvement in tackling spin: Gambhir on Kohli, Mayank's dismissal

Shreyas Iyer made heads turn in the just-concluded India-Sri Lanka T20Is at home. In the three games, Iyer got an opportunity to bat at No. 3 in Virat Kohli's absence and made the most of his chances to remain unbeaten throughout the series. He returned with scores of 57* (28), 74* (44) and 73* (45) as Rohit Sharma's India completed a whitewash over the hapless Islanders.

While Iyer shifts his focus on the two-match Test series between India and Sri Lanka, which gets underway on March 04 in Mohali, he reflected back on his journey with the Delhi Capitals (DC), having made his IPL debut for the franchise in 2015. After a shoulder injury in early 2021, the right-hander couldn't take part in the first leg of IPL 2021 and eventually lost the captaincy to Rishabh Pant for the whole season. With DC willing to continue with Pant as the captain, Iyer wasn't retained and has now been bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of IPL 2022 edition.

“Injury,” Iyer said in a recent interaction -- with Times of India -- on being asked what was the bigger blow between injury and losing DC captaincy. “That was a bigger low. If that didn't happen, they wouldn't have stepped me down as a captain. At Delhi Capitals, you saw the reflection of the environment at the start of 2021, which we created in 2019 & 20. The atmosphere was amazing. The players knew each other inside out, their strengths and weaknesses. I don't want to get deeper into it," stated Iyer.

Under Iyer, DC had reached their first-ever playoffs after nine years in IPL 2019. In addition, the franchise played their maiden final during IPL 2020 season -- during Iyer's captaincy -- held in the UAE.

He further asserted on his injury, "Sometimes things just happen for the better. It's just that we come to know about it later. I was on a roll right in New Zealand (in early 2020) and began feeling really confident of myself and my batting. As captain, I had an amazing season going in the IPL and I scored some 500 runs (in 2020 edition). I was in a good frame of mind and then that injury began playing on my mind. Forced breaks are never easy because you have to start all over again."

"Injuries and rehabs are painful. But I must say, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The injury had made me feel I was 50% of the player I otherwise am. Having fully recovered, I've come back fresh and feel good. So, whatever happens, happens for good," Iyer added.

'They wouldn't have...': Shreyas Iyer recalls being replaced as Delhi Capitals' skipper

Ishan Kishan slammed a brilliant knock of 89 runs as India thrashed Sri Laka by 62 runs in the first T20I of the ongoing three-match series in Lucknow on Friday. The wicket-keeper batter was under significant pressure to bounce back after his poor run in the recently-concluded T20I series against West Indies. However, Kishan silenced his critics in style with a stunning knock.

After Sri Lanka won the toss and invited India to bat first in the series-opener, Kishan and skipper Rohit Sharma got the hosts off to a flyer. The duo went all out against the Sri Lankan bowlers to post a 111-run opening stand. While skipper Rohit continued his good form and scored 44 off 32 balls, Kishan went berserk and slammed 89 off 56 deliveries.

Kishan's swashbuckling knock was laced with ten fours and three sixes as he took the Sri Lankan bowlers to the cleaners. The young wicket-keeper batter missed out on scoring his maiden T20I hundred by just 11 runs but ended up creating a new record for the Men in Blue in T20Is.

With the help of his brilliant knock, Kishan surpassed MS Dhoni and Rishabh Pant to create the record for the highest individual score by an Indian wicket-keeper batter in T20Is. Pant held the record previously with the highest score of 65 runs in T20Is. While both Kishan and Rahul have played a number of matches as specialist batters in the Indian team, the list consists of their highest scores from matches where they also kept wickets for the team.

Rohit Sharma & Co. thrash Sri Lanka in 1st T20I as India attain longest unbeaten streak in shortest format

A lot has changed in Indian cricket following the 2021 T20 World Cup. Virat Kohli had already made it clear that he won't captain in the shortest format post the mega event and was succeeded by Rohit Sharma. Before the end of 2021, BCCI removed Kohli as the ODI captain as Rohit was appointed as the white-ball skipper.

As Kohli stepped down as the Test captain in mid-January, Rohit has now taken over as the all-format captain. While KL Rahul has been confirmed as Rohit's deputy in the shorter formats, there is no clarity on who will take up the vice-captaincy slot in Tests. Ahead of the India-Sri Lanka home T20Is, captain Rohit addressed the media and mentioned three names who are being looked upon as the possible contenders for Team India captaincy after him.

They are also seen as possible contenders for leadership," he said.

While Rahul has already led India in one Test and three ODIs, during the South Africa tour, Bumrah acted Rahul's deputy back then and will again take the vice-captain's slot in the former's absence for the SL T20Is. On the other hand, Pant was serving as the vice-captain in the recently-concluded white-ball series versus West Indies at home.

Rohit Sharma names three possible contenders for Team India captaincy post

Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant are not only two swashbuckling batters for Team India but the duo also are capable wicketkeepers. Kishan and Pant go a long way back. The former was Pant's captain in the 2016 U-19 World Cup, in Bangladesh.

The two cricketers were part of India's top-order in the U-19 showpiece event. While Pant now bats down the order for the national side, switching roles from a middle-order batter to a finisher, Ishan remains a top-order batter -- for India and his IPL franchise Mumbai Indians (MI). As both players have similar skillsets, people often brand them as rivals. However, Kishan played down all such claims and feels there is no thought of competition between the two.

We don’t even think we’re competing with each other: Ishan Kishan plays down rivalry with Rishabh Pant

India's Test squad for the forthcoming home series versus Sri Lanka was announced on Saturday (February 19). Among the notable omissions, senior pros Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha and Ishant Sharma's absence made heads turn.

While Pujara-Rahane are busy in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2021/22 edition, Saha's future seems to be, more or less, sealed after the 37-year-old wicketkeeper-batter revealed his chat with head coach Rahul Dravid. Saha mentioned that Dravid had a conversation with him, where he revealed that the national side is looking at KS Bharat as the second keeper-batter to Rishabh Pant and not him. In addition, he suggested Saha take a call on his future.

Following Dravid's remark, Saha's childhood coach Jayant Bhowmik told India Today, "Rahul Dravid is a gentleman. I have heard what he has said. It's alright. But then, even now Indian team has players who are in their late 30s. Everyone knows that Wriddhiman Saha is still No.1 wicketkeeper in the world. Then, what is the problem?"

He further asserted, "There should not be different criteria for different people when it comes to selection. That's unfair. How can this happen? I spoke to Wriddhiman Saha this morning. He is mentally very strong. His mental strength won't be affected because of all this. He is exceptional.

"But what hurts me is Saha is someone who loves the sport, contributed so much to his country and sport but he has been left out without a proper criterion," Jayanta added.

Saha mentioned that Dravid had a conversation with him, where he revealed that the national side is looking at KS Bharat as the second keeper-batter to Rishabh Pant and not him. In addition, he suggested Saha take a call on his future. I have heard what he has said. It's alright. But then, even now Indian team has players who are in their late 30s. Everyone knows that Wriddhiman Saha is still No.1 wicketkeeper in the world. Then, what is the problem?" He further asserted, "There should not be different criteria for different people when it comes to selection. Shouldn't be different selection criteria for different people: Wriddhiman Saha's coach on Dravid's remark

Rohit Sharma was appointed as India's permanent Test captain on Saturday (February 19). These are potential leaders to be groomed under Rohit. Yes, it is difficult to say who will be next captain but we are sure a name will emerge,” he added.

Team India defeated West Indies by 8 runs in a thrilling second and penultimate T20I at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Friday (February 18). Rohit Sharma-led Indian team were asked to bat first as they rode on Virat Kohli's 52, Rishabh Pant's 52* and Venkatesh Iyer's 33 to post 186-5 in 20 overs.

In reply, WI were 59-2 before a century-stand between half-centurions Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran steadied the ship but impressive death-over bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel ensured a series win for India.
