<p>Former India captain and batting great Sunil Gavaskar has urged the BCCI to implement the 'incentive scheme' in the Ranji Trophy as well, saying it will motivate more players at the domestic level and will also look after the feeder (to the Test team) system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, the BCCI announced an incentive scheme for all those who will appear in 75% of Tests in a season by paying them an extra INR 45 lakhs per game (outside of their designated match fee), while those playing from 50-75% matches will pocked INR 30 lakhs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"That is a wonderful thing by the BCCI to reward those who would be playing [Test cricket]. But I would also request the BCCI to ensure that the feeder to the Test team, which is the Ranji Trophy, is also looked after," Gavaskar said on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Friday.</p>

<p>Given the pay breakdown in India's domestic tournaments, a player earns INR 2 lakhs for a Ranji game. If he plays each match, and his team qualifies for the finals, it adds up to 10 games, meaning a player can earn a maximum of INR 20 lakhs (equivalent to the lowest base price for a player in the IPL). Besides, the match fee in the Vijay Hazare Trophy is INR 50,000, dropping to INR 17,500 in Syed Mushtaq Ali.</p>

<p>"[If your team doesn't qualify for the knockouts], your whole year's earnings are around 20 lakh, which is like the base price in the IPL. If there are proper contracts, then players will feel more motivated to play red-ball cricket," an unnamed domestic player said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking on the same lines, Gavaskar said the BCCI must consider increasing the player fees by two or three folds to ensure financial security for all, motivating them to prefer the Ranji Trophy over franchise-based T20 cricket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If the Ranji Trophy fee can be doubled or tripled, certainly there will be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy, [and a] lot less pullouts. They will all be wanting to play with the slab system - [if] every ten first-class matches you get that much more - so I would request the BCCI to look at that aspect as well."</p>

<h2>Better scheduling will help the motive</h2>

<p>Gavaskar touched upon a different aspect of how better scheduling can help BCCI achieve their motive.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The former top-order batter asked BCCI to look into the growing concern of the short gap between Ranji games and even suggested Ranji to be the first of three tournaments to be played and not the last to ensure everyone is available and no one opts to skip it.</p>

<p>As things stand, the Ranji Trophy is the last competition in the domestic calendar.&nbsp;</p>

Mumbai led by Ajinkya Rahane was put into bat first in the match, but the decision backfired as they were bowled out for 224.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vidarbha, however, failed to capitalise on it and secure a victory as their batsmen crumbled for&nbsp;105, handing the record champions a 119-run lead in the first innings.</p>

<p>The second innings was more competitive as a 136-run knock from Musheer Khan coupled with Ajinkya Rahane’s 95-run knock saw Mumbai score 418 in the second innings. The massive score meant Vidarbha needed 538 runs to win the final. However, like Mumbai, Vidarbha also gave a good response in their second innings as Akshay Wadkar (102), Karun Nair (74) and Harsh Dubey (65) led the foundation for the chase.</p>

<p>On Tuesday (March 12) Mumbai strengthened its grip on Day 3 of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2023-24 final&nbsp;versus Vidarbha&nbsp;at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Resuming the day at 141-2, with an overall lead of 260, the 41-time Ranji champions Mumbai rode on captain Ajinkya Rahane's 73, Musheer Khan's 136 and Shreyas Iyer's blistering 95 to take their lead beyond the 500-run mark as Vidarbha are on the mat in the summit clash. Musheer, who resumed the day at 51*, continued his rich vein of form and slammed a magnificent hundred to break Sachin Tendulkar's 29-year-long record.</p>

<p>Musheer, Test cricketer Sarfaraz Khan's younger brother, stitched a brilliant 130-run third-wicket stand with Rahane and added another 168 for the fourth-wicket with Iyer to bolster his side's position and reach the three-figures mark. With this, he became the youngest Mumbai batter to score a hundred in the Ranji final. Before this, Sachin Tendulkar held this record when he slammed a century in the&nbsp;final of the 1994/95 season. Back then, Tendulkar hit two successive tons in the finale played between Mumbai and Punjab. He held the record for over two decades before Musheer finally broke it on Tuesday, at the age of 19 years and 14 days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India coach Rahul Dravid has called for hearing players about tough domestic schedule and has asked for a review about the same. Dravid made the comments after India wrapped up the five-match Test series against England with a 4-1 win in Dharamsala on Saturday (Mar 9). Notably, India all-rounder Shardul Thakur had raised the issue of three-day gaps between the games in the ongoing Ranji Trophy (India's premier domestic tournament) after winning the semi-final for Mumbai.</p>

It's a long season already in India. It's tough," added Dravid.</p>

<p>"Maybe we need to relook and see whether some of the tournaments that we are conducting are necessary in this day and age or they are not necessary. According to the legendary player, the decision by the BCCI to mandate players to play in domestic cricket will only protect the sport. The BCCI recently announced the contracts for national team players with Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer missing out on having opted to stay away from domestic cricket despite being available.</p>

<p>“I congratulate the BCCI for taking the much-needed step to protect the status of domestic cricket. I was sad to see domestic cricket being given the skip by players once they had established themselves in international cricket. It was high time the message was given and this strong step by the BCCI will go a long way in restoring the prestige of domestic cricket,” Dev said while speaking to news agency PTI.</p>

<p>“I have always believed in the process of international players making themselves available to play for their respective states. It helps them extend their support to domestic players. Also it is a nice way to pay back for the services rendered by the state association in grooming a player,” he added.</p>

<p>The BCCI on Wednesday made a bold statement by excluding both Ishan and Shreyas from the central contracts despite them being part of the World Cup squad as recently as November. <h2><strong>What prompted BCCI to take action?</strong></h2>

<p>Ishan during the South Africa tour opted to miss the Test series having been down the pecking order in the Playing XI and was reportedly spotted in UAE at a party. He&nbsp;later missed matches for his domestic side Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy despite being passed fit. His desire to focus on the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) and not show up for domestic duties did not augur well with the BCCI.</p>

<p>For Shreyas, he was part of the Indian team for the opening two Test matches against England but complained of back spasms. The National Cricket Academy (NCA) declared Shreyas fit, but he too like Ishan refrained from representing Mumbai or India.</p>

<p>It will be interesting to see how the players act with the eyes now on the T20 World Cup squad with Ishan being one of the first names on the team sheet. The BCCI will likely announce the World Cup squad in the second week of May with IPL in the focus.&nbsp;</p>

He has taken 47 wickets so far with performance against Baroda being his best. In List A cricket, where he has also taken a hattrick, Khejroliya has 68 wickets to his name in 35 games. In T20s, the bowler has 24 wickets in 23 games.</p>

<p>He also plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Kolkata Knight Riders. Previously, he has played for Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore as well. <p>Karnataka captain and India cricketer Mayank Agarwal’s manager has filed an official complaint after the player was served contaminated water on Tuesday (Jan 30) during his Delhi-bound flight. Agarwal, who played a key role in leading his side to a 29-run win against Tripura, was rushed to hospital in the capital city of Agartala after complaining of swelling and ulcers in the mouth. The flight was delayed and the player was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment. He is now reported to be stable.</p>

<h2><strong>Mayank’s manager lodges complaint</strong></h2>

<p>"Mayank Agarwal, an international cricket player. Now he is stable and his vitals are normal. But his manager has lodged a specific complaint under NCCPS (New Capital Complex Police Station) to investigate the matter," Superintendent of Police West Tripura, Kiran Kumar, told PTI.</p>

<p>"His manager said that when he was sitting in the airplane, there was a pouch in front of him. He drank a little bit not much but suddenly there was irritation in his mouth and suddenly he couldn't talk also and was brought to ILS hospital. He had swelling and ulcers in the mouth. Otherwise, his vitals are stable," the cop told PTI.</p>

<p>"She reminded me that I was the captain when Bengal reached the Ranji Trophy final last year. And then Raj da spoke to me, I thought about it and decided to come back. A lot of fans also wrote to me and asked me to reconsider my decision."</p>

<p>Tiwary was instrumental in Bengal’s recent run in the Ranji Trophy where he almost ended the state’s 33-year drought for the title. Bengal lost in the final to Saurashtra in the final where Tiwary was the captain. He played a 68-run knock in the second innings of the match, but could not avoid the disappointment of loss.</p>

He last played for India in 2015 during the Zimbabwe tour having missed out on yet another World Cup in the same year.</p>

<p>During his time with Bengal, Tiwary was runner-up in the Ranji Trophy on four occasions and scored 9908 runs in 141 matches with a best of unbeaten 303. He will now have the opportunity to complete 10,000 runs in first-class cricket.</p>

In the absence of injured Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, domestic giant Sarfaraz was touted to get his maiden Test call-up for the West Indies series, but that did not happen. Instead, regulars got retained, with Ajinkya Rahane, who didn’t even get the central contract by BCCI, named the vice-captain.</p>

Two days after going public with the squad announcement for both Tests and ODIs, a BCCI official finally came out and revealed why despite piling up runs for successive seasons, the selectors overlooked Sarfaraz for the Test series.</p>

<p>"The angry reactions are understandable, but I can tell you with some degree of certainty that the reason behind Sarfaraz getting ignored time and again is not just a cricketing one. There are multiple reasons for which he hasn't been considered," a BCCI official privy to selection developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.</p>

<p>Since the past three seasons, Sarfaraz scored 2566 runs from 37 games, averaging a whopping 79.65 – only second to great Sir Donald George Bradman. Despite being aware of his on-field credentials, the selectors kept ignoring him, and the unnamed BCCI official added the selection committee is not a fool to not consider someone with 900-plus runs in successive seasons.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added Sarfaraz’s absence from the Test squad has more to do with his fitness and off-field disciplinary issues than his unbelievable on-field records.</p>

<p>"Are the Selectors fools to not consider a player who has scored 900 plus runs in successive seasons? One of the reasons is his fitness which isn't exactly of international standard. "He has to work hard, maybe shed weight and comeback leaner and fitter as it's not just batting fitness that is the sole criteria for selection," the source said.</p>

<p>"His conduct on and off the field hasn't exactly been top-notch. Certain things said, certain gestures made, and some incidents have been taken note of. A bit more disciplined approach would only do him a world of good. Hopefully, Sarfaraz along with his father and coach Naushad Khan will work on those aspects," the senior official added.</p>

<h2>So, what exactly happened?</h2>

<p>Reportedly, Sarfaraz’s celebration after completing a hundred against Delhi earlier this year during the Ranji game didn’t impress the then-selection committee chairman Chetan Sharma, who was present inside the stadium. Moreover, during 2022 Ranji Trophy Final, his conduct during the break upset MP Coach and Mumbai veteran Chandrakant Pandit.</p>

<p>As also perceived by many pundits that Sarfaraz’s inability to tackle extra pace and his latest IPL 2023 records are one of the reasons why he is not getting picked for international cricket, the BCCI official, replying to this, said,</p>

<p>"When Mayank Agarwal broke into the Indian Test team, he scored 1000 first-class runs in one month. Did MSK Prasad's committee check his IPL credentials? Ditto for Hanuma Vihari, who came through domestic and A team ranks. If their IPL and white ball record wasn't checked then, why would SS Das's committee reinvent the wheel now? Simple. The reason is not a cricketing one," he added.</p>

<p>The official concluded by asking, "Just think about it. Why was Sarfaraz not even among the reserves for the World Test Championship? Suryakumar Yadav, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, were the two reserves after Ruturaj pulled out due to his marriage."</p>

<p>As things stand, Ruturaj is kept as Ajinkya Rahane’s backup till Shreyas Iyer returns from injury, while Yashasvi Jaiswal is looked upto as the future top-order batter in Tests.</p>
