The 2025 framework is the latest renewal of a document that has structured US-India defence ties since 2005 and was previously updated in 2015. A US Department of War fact sheet described the latest version as “the most ambitious and wide-ranging document yet", aimed at strengthening interoperability across land, sea, air, space and cyberspace, supporting maritime security, and deepening industrial collaboration, joint exercises and information sharing. Also read | India renews UNSC reform push, slams 'disproportionate' veto use It builds on foundational agreements such as the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement, the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement, and the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement. While broader US-India political relations have faced strains, including trade disputes and differences over other foreign-policy issues, defence cooperation has continued steadily, with regular joint exercises, ongoing equipment deliveries such as Apache helicopters and GE engines for India’s Tejas fighter programme, and growing industrial collaboration. The talks took place during the 13th ADMM-Plus, hosted by the Philippines in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, on 28–29 October as part of Manila’s 2026 ASEAN chairmanship. The forum brings together the ASEAN member states and eight dialogue partners, India, the United States, China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, to discuss regional security cooperation. He is also expected to hold further bilateral meetings with counterparts from Vietnam, Australia and other participating countries. India has long viewed its engagement with ASEAN, under the Act East policy, as central to promoting stability in the Indo-Pacific. The ADMM-Plus remains the region’s primary platform for defence consultations between ASEAN and its external partners, with ministers meeting annually since 2017.

Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi will travel to India next week for high-level talks, marking a further step in the growing security cooperation between the two nations. Koizumi is scheduled to meet Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on 20 August. The visit forms part of a two-nation tour that will also take him to Australia. During his stay in India, he is expected to visit a naval base, as maritime focus in ties gain a new momentum. The visit comes weeks after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was in Delhi for the annual summit with PM Modi as both sides agreed to deepen defence and security cooperation. India and Japan have steadily expanded defence cooperation in recent years. At last year’s annual summit the two countries adopted a Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation. They already take part in a range of joint exercises: the naval drill JAIMEX 25, the army exercise Dharma Guardian, and the air force fighter exercise Veer Guardian. Japan also participated in the International Fleet Review 2026 held in Visakhapatnam. Officials on both sides are pushing for deeper maritime security collaboration. This includes more frequent exercises, improved maritime domain awareness through satellite capabilities, naval maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) work, and closer defence equipment and technology cooperation under India’s “Make in India” framework. A significant shift came earlier this year when Japan overhauled its long-standing restrictions on defence exports. Tokyo reviewed the “Three Principles” that had tightly limited the transfer of defence equipment and technology since the Cold War era. The change allows Japan to supply lethal military hardware and advanced systems to trusted partners such as India. India formally welcomed the move. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in April: “India welcomes Japan’s review of the three principles on transfer of defense equipment and technology. Defense and security cooperation forms an important pillar of India-Japan special strategic and global partnership.” He noted that both sides had committed to practical cooperation for national security and economic resilience, including technological and industrial collaboration between government and private sector partners. One concrete project is already advancing. The two countries have reached agreement in principle on technical details for the Unified Complex Radio Antenna, known as UNICORN, a stealth technology system for warships. Officials expressed hope for an early conclusion of the project and agreed to explore other joint defence equipment and technology initiatives. A 2+2 dialogue involving foreign and defence ministers from both countries is expected to take place by the end of 2026, providing another platform to advance the partnership. The visit comes as both nations seek to strengthen their roles in the Indo-Pacific. For Japan, the policy change marks a clear departure from post-war pacifism. For India, closer ties with Tokyo offer access to advanced technology and a reliable partner amid regional security challenges.

The second week of Parliament's Monsoon Session is expected to witness intense political confrontation after the first week was disrupted by nationwide student protests over the alleged NEET paper leak. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking answers on the alleged deployment of pellet guns and plainclothes personnel against protesting students. Congress and other opposition parties are also expected to raise issues including the alleged Ram Janmabhoomi embezzlement case, the proposed India–US trade agreement, agricultural concerns, ethanol policy, and fresh protests planned by transport operators.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday (May 29) launched a commemorative book on Operation Sindoor, bringing together personal narratives from 100 members of the Indian armed forces who took part in the audacious mission. The book, released at an event in New Delhi, focuses on the experiences of officers and personnel from the Army, Navy and Air Force, offering a ground-level perspective on the operation that destroyed terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) last year in May.Calling the operation a major success, Singh said the mission demonstrated India’s military preparedness and strategic coordination. He stated that the publication was meant to honour the contribution of the personnel involved and help citizens understand the sacrifices made by the armed forces to safeguard the country’s sovereignty.“Operation Sindoor was an unprecedented success where India compelled Pakistan to seek a ceasefire under four days. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to visit Kyrgyzstan for SCO defence ministers' meeting next week

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday (Apr 21) said that any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has direct consequences for developing nations like India and de-stablises the economy of the country. Highlighting that countries like India depends heavily on the West Asian region for energy, he said that disruptions are not “distant events” but immediate challenges affecting national security and economic interests. Singh was addressing the German Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence and Security in Berlin on Day-1 of his three-day visit to Germany.
