India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reacted strongly to China's actions of ‘renaming’ various locations in Arunachal Pradesh. Singh questioned whether similar attempts by India would mean that those areas in China are now considered as "parts of our territory."

Speaking at an election rally in Arunachal's Namsai on Tuesday (April 9), Rajnath Singh said "nothing is going to happen by changing the names. I want to ask China if we change the names of various states of the neighbouring country, will those be parts of our territory? Because of such activities, the relationship between India and China will deteriorate."

The Union minister said China’s move to change the names of 30 places in Arunachal Pradesh will not change the ground reality that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India.

"We want to maintain good relations with all our neighbours. But if anybody tries to harm our self-respect, India has the capability to give a befitting reply," the Defence Minister further said.

Rajnath targeted the Congress party for never showing any interest in developing border regions and that led to India losing about 1000 square kilometres of territory to China.

“I assure you that India will now never allow even an inch of land to be captured by its neighbour. We have rectified the mistakes of the Congress since 2014 when our party came to power and initiated infrastructure projects in border areas so that our borders are secured. For the NDA government, border villages are strategic assets of the country.”

Last Monday, China announced the renaming of 30 locations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh. The Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs issued the fourth list of ‘standardised’ geographical names in the northeastern state, referred to as Zangnan by Beijing. This list included 11 residential areas, 12 mountains, four rivers, one lake, one mountain pass, and a parcel of land, all of which were subject to renaming by China.

India's External Affairs Ministryhad denounced the renaming and its spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said, “China has persisted with its senseless attempts to rename places in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. We firmly reject such attempts.”

UK to send warships, aircraft carrier to Indian Ocean for joint training with Indian forces

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called on UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in London on Wednesday.

"Raksha Mantri Shri @rajnathsingh and his British counterpart Mr. @grantshapps attended the India-UK Defence Industry CEOs Roundtable at Trinity House in London," read a post on the defence minister's official handle on 'X'.

The UK announced its plans to send its Littoral Response Group to the Indian Ocean Region later this year, with a proposal for the Carrier Strike Group to visit the Indian waters in 2025. Both will operate and train with Indian forces.

In a move that signals the growing importance of the strategic relationship between the UK and India, Defence Secretary Shapps welcomed Singh to the UK and the two leaders agreed on unprecedented levels of UK-India defence cooperation, according to an official release.

The two nations also discussed future cooperation in defence from joint exercises to knowledge sharing and instructor exchanges. These steps build on the comprehensive strategic partnership envisaged in the 2030 India-UK roadmap, announced in 2021, it added.

In the coming years, the UK and India will also embark on more complex exercises between their respective militaries, building up to a landmark joint exercise to be conducted before the end of 2030, supporting shared goals of protecting critical trade routes and upholding the international rules-based system, as per the release.

Defence Secretary Shapps said, "There is absolutely no question that the world is becoming increasingly contested, so it's vital that we continue to build on our strategic relationships with key partners like India. Together we share the same security challenges and are steadfast on our commitment to maintaining a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific."

Appreciating the Army for their bravery, Singh said, "I believe in your bravery and steadfastness... Terrorism should be finished from Jammu and Kashmir and you need to move forward with this commitment. I have full faith that you will achieve victory."

However, he asked the Army that they should not "make any mistake" which can hurt any Indian. Singh was in the border district of Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, to review the security situation days after four soldiers were killed in an ambush on two Army vehicles.
Don't make a mistake that hurts an Indian: minister

"You are the country's protectors. But I want to request you that besides ensuring the country's security, you also have the responsibility to win the hearts of the people. There should be no mistake that hurts an Indian," Singh said.

The defence minister added that the forces need to share a close bond with the people. "We have to win battles, eliminate terrorists, but a bigger objective is to win the hearts of the people. We will win wars, but we need to win hearts too. And I know you try your best to do this," he added.

Assuring the troops, he said that every soldier is considered as a family member by every Indian.

"Every Indian feels this way. It is not tolerable to us if anyone casts an evil eye on you. Security and intelligence agencies play a crucial role in stopping such attacks. Whatever support is needed to step up surveillance will be provided by the government. The doors to our treasury are fully open," he stated.

The latest edition, held off the Konkan coast in the Arabian Sea in March, aimed at increasing interoperability between the Indian and British navies. British Naval ships, including HMS Lancaster and HMS Tamar, also visited Indian ports of Kochi and Chennai, further solidifying maritime ties. The aerial domain witnessed collaboration as well, with the Indian Air Force participating in Ex Cobra Warrior 2023, a multinational air exercise hosted at RAF Waddington, UK, in March. This exchange showcased the prowess and interoperability of the respective air forces. The strengthening of ties was evident during the Defense Consultative Group meeting in October, where defence secretaries from both the nations explored new areas for defense industrial cooperation. The discussions delved into emerging domains such as cyber and artificial intelligence, reflecting the evolving nature of modern defense collaboration. Earlier in the year, External Affairs Minister Dr Jaishankar visited the UK during Diwali, further cementing diplomatic relations. In September, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also visited New Delhi for the G20 summit.

India: Govt approves proposals worth $944 million to enhance operational capabilities of armed forces

On the 24th anniversary of the Kargil Vijay Diwas, celebrations and tributes were paid by hundreds of people who had gathered at the Drass war memorial in Kargil district. Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh along with the Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Army Chief General Manoj Pande and Navy chief admiral R Hari Kumar paid floral tributes to the martyred soldiers of the Kargil war.

Singh said that nobody has the courage to raise evil eyes towards India as brave soldiers are protecting every inch of the country, and if needed, they will not hesitate to cross the Line of Control (LoC).

"I am among the soldiers of the Indian army and that gives me strength too. On the occasion of Kargil Diwas, I am extremely happy to be here. I bow to those soldiers who laid down their lives for the country. I congratulate the whole country on the occasion. I cannot express how proud I am to be here," Singh said.

"It’s due to these strong soldiers that our nation stands. For the protection of the borders, the soldiers showed utmost strength which will always be remembered in history. Despite low oxygen, our soldiers never let their guard down. Kargil win was the win of every Indian," he added.

Singh was accompanied by the Chief of Defence Staff along with the tri-service chiefs. They visited the Kargil War Memorial in Drass and paid tributes to soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the 1999 India-Pakistan war.

Speaking on the occasion, Singh said that India has great respect for all other countries and also follows norms for international conduct, but its generosity couldn’t be mistaken as its weakness.

“Narendra Modi led government is very clear and gave free hand to armed forces to launch operation across the border if the need arises. At that time (1999) if we did not cross the LoC, it does not mean we weren't able to cross it. We could have crossed the LoC then, we can cross the LoC now, and will cross the LoC in future if needed,” he said.

Singh said, "I want to tell the countrymen that we have learnt so much from the Kargil war. The war between Ukraine and Russia is on for over a year. We need to learn from these wars. The war between those two countries is still on and the reason is the participation of the civilian population. In India, the local population should get ready to be part of any future wars as trained soldiers. The way every Indian army soldier is an Indian, every Indian has to be a soldier too."

Army Chief General Manoj Pandey, while addressing the media persons, said, "We have gathered here to pay tributes to those soldiers who gave a befitting reply to the enemy forces during the Kargil war. The sacrifice of the soldiers cannot be forgotten, and we will always be indebted to them for it. These peaks that you see around were captured by the enemy and our brave soldiers made sure to recapture all these peaks."

General Pandey said, "Air Force also played a vital role during the war as well. The local population also made sure to support the army always. In future, we might have to face more challenges and we have to be ready to face those challenges."
