<h2>Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi detained</h2>Delhi Police detained Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, for holding the unauthorised protest. Rahul said, “This fight is not political, but it is aimed at saving the Constitution. This fight is for ‘one man, one vote’ and we want a clean, pure voter list.” Joint Commissioner of Police Deepak Purohit told ANI, “The detained INDIA bloc leaders have been taken to a nearby Police Station. We are still counting the number of MPs detained. There was no permission for a protest here, but we had intimation.” New Delhi DCP Devesh Kumar said there was permission for only 30 MPs from the Election Commission. <h2>‘Opposition trying to create anarchy’</h2> Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accused opposition parties of trying to “create anarchy in the country”. He dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s “vote theft” claim as a “lie” and alleged the protests were part of a “well thought out strategy to create instability”. Pradhan said, “Congress and other opposition parties want to make ‘intruders’ voters in the country.” INDIA bloc has made the SIR its central issue, linking it to broader claims of democratic erosion under the BJP. The EC has rejected the allegations, insisting its procedures meet legal standards.

The opposition's protest march saw some drama and histrionics as MPs wearing white caps marked with a red cross over the words “SIR” and “vote chori” raised slogans and carried placards accusing the Election Commission of colluding with the government.

The protest by the Opposition leaders came even as the Election Commission of India gave an appointment to Opposition MPs for an interaction at 12 pm on Monday (Aug 11). Police said that security was tightened and barricades were erected at multiple points along the route.&nbsp;The march comes after Rahul Gandhi in a press conference last week, made explosive claims of a “huge criminal fraud” in polls through “collusion” between the ruling BJP and the EC, as he cited an analysis in a constituency in Karnataka and said it was “a crime against the Constitution”. He claimed that over 1 lakh votes in the Mahadevapura assembly constituency in Karnataka were found to be fake, duplicate, bulk voters, with invalid addresses and new voters added with misuse of Form 6, according to news agency PTI.

'We want a clean voters list': India's opposition leader Rahul Gandhi detained during protest against Bihar's SIR, Election Commission

Rahul Gandhi has accused the Election Commission of India and the Bharatiya Janata Party of orchestrating “vote chori” during the 2024 General election and the recent state assembly election. According to Gandhi, specifically in the 'Mahadevapura' assembly segment of Bengaluru Central, 100,250 duplicate voters were found. Other anomalies include duplicate, fake or bulk registration, misuse of Form 6, and invalid photos. This is the same seat which the BJP won by around 30000 votes. According to him, in Maharashtra, 40 lakh voters were created. He also accused the ECI of destroying CCTV footage, withholding machine-readable voter data and shutting down state election websites.<h2>Are Rahul Gandhi's 'Vote Chori' claims completely baseless?</h2>Rahul Gandhi's allegations are serious and tap into the broader public fear of electoral manipulation. There had been several independent investigations by the news outlets based on the details of the press conference of Rahul Gandhi. He gave an example of the house no. 35 in Muni Reddy Garden, Mahadevpura, which houses 80 registered voters. Several outlets like India Today, The Print, and Deccan Herald independently visited the address mentioned by Rahul Gandhi. The findings raised serious red flags. The house is occupied by a food delivery agent, Dipankar, from West Bengal, on rent. The house belongs to Jayaram Reddy, who once claimed to be with the BJP but later backtracked.&nbsp;Other independent verifications in Election Commission websites show bizarre findings, like many voters registered with house number zero, multiple voters voting with the same names, same address, a gibberish collection of random letters in the names and illegible microscopic images are present in the Election Commission's voter list. Open source analysis by Peek TV shows that the assembly in Bengaluru Central, which is in the middle of this political storm, has one voter named Gurkirat Singh Dang who is registered in four different polling booths and has four different voter IDs. Similarly, Aditya Shrivastava, a voter, is registered in UP, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.<h2>How did ECI respond?</h2>ECI quickly dismissed all the allegations, calling it a 'tired script' relating it to the previous claims of voter theft in 2018 by Congress leaders that were dismissed by the Supreme Court. &nbsp;It has demanded that Rahul Gandhi should either sign an apology or a formal declaration; refusal to do that means a lack of belief in his claims. The same affidavit-level evidence was asked by the Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The Election Commission of India cited Registration of Electors Rules 1960, 20(3)(b), a signed oath from Rahul Gandhi.&nbsp;However, according to the rules, the Registration officer doesn't need to seek a signed oath. Similarly, Section 12 states that any complaint must be submitted within 30 days of the publication of the draft roll. Even if Rahul Gandhi signs an oath, the Registration Officer can just refuse to entertain the claims. So why do ECI need an affidavit if they can just deny it? Is it an attempt to buy time to cover up the mess created?It is to be noted that these duplicate voters do not necessarily indicate voter manipulation; these can stem from technical and mechanical errors as well as poor voter synchronisation. But the reaction from the ECI smells fishy. Former Justice of Bombay High Court BG Kolse Patil has criticised ECI's response as overly arrogant, called for Supreme Court intervention to hold them accountable.&nbsp;<h2>Why is ECI reluctant to release electronic voter roll data?</h2>The ECI argues that voter rolls contain sensitive personal data, even though they are available publicly in PDF form. Releasing this in bulk will make it easier for targeted political ads, scams and voter profiling. &nbsp;Moreover, historically, parties have used these data to send campaign messages and botcalls. They often cite Right to Privacy judgments from previous cases and lack of a Data protection infrastructure. But releasing the voter data will make large-scale duplicate audits possible, thus revealing the errors or malpractices. This is exactly the kind of audit that will give Rahul Gandhi's vote theft claim strength in spine. Thus, ECI controls the narrative by limiting access to the electronic voter data.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rahul Gandhi's recent press conference has created a political storm in India, with several irregularities in ECI data questions about fair elections are imminent, as the ruling BJP tries to brush this off. Why is ECI too reluctant to give access to electronic data for an independent audit?

Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Vote Chori’ claim strengthened by independent findings of voter roll irregularities, ECI criticised for data secrecy

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his allegations of large-scale voter fraud and challenged him to either formally verify his claims or apologise to the nation. Accusing him of repeating an ‘old political script’, the poll body said in a statement that the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha has raised “baseless” charges similar to those made in 2018 by then Madhya Pradesh Congress President Kamal Nath, which were dismissed by the Supreme Court. “At his recent press conference, Rahul repeated a tired script. In 2018, it was then Kamal Nath, the then President of MPCC; today, it’s the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha playing the same tune,” the EC said.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2018, Congress leaders attempted to mislead the court by producing documents from a private website to claim errors in electoral rolls, including instances where “the same face was shown again for as many as 36 voters.” The EC said those defects had been rectified months earlier and the details shared with the party.&nbsp;“The Court refused to accept the prayer of Kamal Nath. Now, in 2025, they, being aware that the same trick cannot be played in court, are trying to mislead the people by claiming irregularities in the electoral rolls,” it added.&nbsp;<h2>‘Trying to sensationalise issue with baseless claims in media’</h2>&nbsp;The commission referred to a specific case of one name of Aditya Srivastava, which Rahul claimed appeared in three different states. “In fact, [this] was rectified months ago,” it said. It further reminded the Congress leader that the Kamal Nath judgment had “settled” the position on machine-readable electoral rolls, and accused him of disregarding the Supreme Court’s decisions.&nbsp;“Law provides a specific procedure for both making objections to the roll and for making an appeal. Instead of availing the legal processes, he tried to sensationalise the issue by making baseless claims in the media,” the EC said.&nbsp;“If Rahul believes in his analysis and believes that his allegations against the EC are true, he should have respect for the law and sign the Declaration, or apologise to the nation for raising absurd allegations against the EC.”&nbsp;&nbsp;The chief electoral officers (CEOs) of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Haryana had asked Rahul to submit the names of voters he believes were wrongly included or removed, along with a signed oath under Rule 20(3)(b) of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>Rahul alleged ‘vote chori’ in Karnataka constituency</h2>&nbsp;On Thursday, Rahul alleged “vote chori” in a Karnataka constituency involving 1,00,250 votes and irregularities in the rolls.Dismissing the EC’s demand for a signed declaration, he said, “I am a politician; what I say to the people is my word. Interestingly, they haven’t denied the information.”&nbsp;He accused the EC of colluding with the BJP to “undermine democracy” and warned polling officials allegedly involved of consequences if the Opposition came to power.He also claimed that the EC was “destroying evidence” by limiting the preservation of CCTV and webcasting footage to 45 days unless election results were legally challenged.&nbsp;“It is the 21st century; you can keep as much data as you want in a hard drive, even 10 years old data, but the Election Commission wants to destroy the CCTV footage in 45 days,” he said.&nbsp;<h2>EC issues detailed rebuttal&nbsp;</h2>&nbsp;The ECI issued a detailed rebuttal to Rahul Gandhi’s five-question challenge, where he accused the poll body of bias, tampering, and shielding the ruling party. It said if Rahul Gandhi does not sign the declaration, it would mean that he does not believe in his analysis, resultant conclusions and is making absurd allegations.&nbsp;&nbsp;At a press conference on Thursday, Rahul had presented what he called an “atom bomb” of proofs of the ECI resorting to “vote chori”.&nbsp;&nbsp;BJP’s Amit Malviya scoffed at the Congress leader and said, “... he (is) indulging in political theatre only to obfuscate facts, plant doubts in people’s minds, and tarnish the image of a constitutional body entrusted with free and fair elections.”

Responding to Rahul Gandhi's continuous barrage of questions, BJP addressed the media and party spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said that he should ask his questions in all-party meetings and no cause harm to the nation.&nbsp;"You can ask any question in an all-party meeting of the MEA briefing. When it is about the nation, every statement holds weight, and will be exposed if it causes harm to the country," Bhatia said. Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had targeted Jaishankar accusing the government of informing Pakistan at the start of Operation Sindoor. The Ministry of External Affairs had then responded firmly, saying Jaishankar’s words were being taken out of context.<h2>What had EAM S Jaishankar said in the interview?</h2>EAM Jaishankar said in the interview, "Rubio had spoken to me, Vance had spoken to our prime minister. They had their view, and they were talking to us, and they were talking to Pakistanis, as indeed were some other countries. The United States was not alone in this. I think there were some countries in the Gulf. There were some others as well."&nbsp;"But the cessation of firing and military action was something which was negotiated directly between India and Pakistan," he clarified."We made one thing very clear to everybody who spoke to us, not just the United States, but to everybody that if the Pakistanis want to stop firing, they need to tell us. We need to hear it from them. Their general has to call up our general and say this and that is what happened," he said.

Moreover, in an interview with Dutch daily De Volkskrant, Jaishankar was point blank in his statement when he said, "Let's stop pretending Pakistan is not involved in terrorist attacks on India." "We should not go along with the narrative that Pakistan does not know what is going on. The most notorious terrorists on the United Nations (UN) sanctions list are all in Pakistan," Jaishankar said.

Expressing strong displeasure at Gandhi's remarks, the SC said: "Veer Savarkar is a freedom fighter. You are calling them servants of the English. How can you make such irresponsible statements about freedom fighters?".
"You are going to Maharashtra and giving such statements. Savarkar is worshipped in Maharashtra," noted the court.
The court said that Mahatma Gandhi had used the term 'your faithful servant' in a letter to his viceroy, and remarked, "So according to you, they also became the servants of the English".

"Does he (know) that even Mahatma Gandhi used the words 'your faithful servant'?. Does he know his grandmother also sent a letter to the freedom fighter praising him?...You cannot make such statements without knowing history or geography of freedom fighters," warned the Court said, while addressing Gandhi's lawyer, Senior Counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
It further said that it was ready to stay the summons issued against Gandhi, but warned him to "refrain from making any further statement".
"If you make such a statement, the court will take cognisance of it," warned the top court.

Young India Ltd was set up in 2010 with Rahul Gandhi as a director and Sonia holding 76 per cent of the company's shares. The remaining 24% were held by Congress leaders Motilal Vora and Oscar Fernandes.&nbsp;
In 2013, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy filed a private criminal complaint wherein he accused Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and others of conspiring to cheat and misappropriate funds in the acquisition of AJL by YIL. He alleged that YIL (Sonia and Rahul Gandhi's firm) paid only Rs 50 lakh to obtain assets and properties of much higher value. Several of AJL's past shareholders also claimed that they were not consulted before the stakes were transferred to YIL. Swamy named Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Motilal Vora, Oscar Fernandes, Sam Pitroda and journalist Suman Dubey in the case.
The allegations were heard in various courts on Swamy's complaint. After the BJP came to power in 2014, the Income Tax department and the Enforcement Directorate launched separate investigations into the matter. The I-T department case relates to the alleged evasion of taxes and stamp duties on the transaction, which takes into account AJL's immovable assets. The ED registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after a trial court in Delhi took cognizance of the Income Tax probe. The investigation wing of the I-T department submitted a detailed Tax Evasion Petition against some persons, including Rahul Gandhi, in 2015. Later that year, the Gandhis and the other leaders secured bail.
The ED has cited a 2017 Income Tax assessment order alleging that key office-bearers of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), along with the principal officers of AJL and YIL, orchestrated a &ldquo;criminal conspiracy&rdquo; to take over properties worth ₹2,000 crore belonging to AJL, according to news agency PTI.&nbsp;The ED, while attaching ₹751 crore worth assets of AJL and YIL in November 2023, claimed that a criminal conspiracy was hatched to give control of properties worth &ldquo;hundreds of crores of rupees&rdquo; of AJL to the &ldquo;beneficial owners&rdquo; of YIL - Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

ED initiates possession of over $76mn assets in National Herald money laundering case

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday urged party workers to strengthen the organisation and begin preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
Party workers met Gandhi at his parliamentary residence in Bhuemau and apprised him of various issues, particularly those concerning Dalits.
Sunil Kumar Gautam, president of the Congress Scheduled Caste wing in Rae Bareli, said a 12-member delegation from the community met Gandhi at his Bhuemau residence.

"We discussed issues concerning the Scheduled Caste community and informed him about the difficulties faced since the BJP government came to power in the state. A major concern is that sanitation workers from the Valmiki community, employed in municipal bodies, are still forced to work without protective gear, which is a violation of Supreme Court directives," Gautam told PTI Videos.
He added that Gandhi motivated them and emphasised the need to prepare vigorously for the 2027 elections while strengthening the party organisation.
Congress's Rae Bareli committee vice-president Sarvottam Kumar Mishra praised Gandhi's leadership, and said his "honesty, vision, and work ethic were beyond description".

After the meeting, Mishra told PTI Videos that Gandhi carefully listened to party workers and the general public and stressed the need for solutions to their concerns.
The Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha commenced his two-day visit to Rae Bareli on Thursday.
On the second day of his visit, Gandhi paid tribute to Veera Pasi, a hero of the 1857 revolution, and BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, by garlanding their statues in Narpatganj.

Later in the afternoon, he participated in a 'Yuva Samvad" in Lalganj where he interacted with youths, highlighting the issue of unemployment and slamming the government for it. He then visited the Modern Rail Coach Factory plant in Lalganj where he stressed that "railways is the lifeline of India and the government should prioritise making it safe and comfortable for passengers".
Gandhi held discussions with the factory's general manager Prashant Kumar Mishra and other senior officials regarding coach manufacturing.
Chief Public Relations Officer RN Tiwari said, "The MRCF administration provided detailed insights into the production process of various types of coaches, including Sleeper, AC3 Economy, Humsafar, Antyodaya, AC Pantry Car, Non-AC Chair Car, Tejas, Rajdhani, Bharat Gaurav, Mozambique, and Vande Bharat. This year, the production focus is on general and sleeper coaches, which constitute about 90 per cent of the total output."

Gandhi described the Railways as the "backbone of the country" and inquired about indigenous technology, domestic manufacturing, and the role of both railway employees and contract workers in coach production."&nbsp;
He acknowledged the transformation in the railway sector, stating, "Railways are a fundamental necessity, and revolutionary changes have taken place." Expressing satisfaction, he noted that while many sectors are primarily engaged in trading, MRCF is actively contributing to coach manufacturing.
Gandhi later left for Lucknow by road to further depart for Delhi.
Meanwhile, in some areas of Rae Bareli, posters opposing Gandhi and the Congress party surfaced during his visit. The posters accused Gandhi of insulting BSP chief Mayawati and the Dalit community.
The posters referenced a recent statement by Congress leader Udit Raj against Mayawati.
"Mr. Rahul Gandhi, your double standards are evident. On one hand, you visit Scheduled Caste hostels and memorials of Veera Pasi to pose as a benefactor of Dalits, while on the other hand, your party leaders openly declare their intention to strangle Dalit icon and four-time Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Behan Kumari Mayawati," read one of the posters.
"This is an insult to the entire Dalit community. Apologise for this, or the Dalit society will ensure you learn a lesson," stated the message, attributed to the Bahujan Swabhiman Manch, Uttar Pradesh.

"This is an insult to the entire Dalit community. Chetia said in his complaint, "By declaring that his fight is against the 'Indian State itself', the accused has consciously incited subversive activities and rebellion among the populace. This is an attempt to delegitimise the authority of the State and to portray it as a hostile force, thereby creating a dangerous narrative that could provoke unrest and separatist sentiments."

India: Bihar man files case against Rahul Gandhi over $ 2.88 milk loss

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi highlighted the key differences between his Congress party and BJP during a conversation with IIT Madras students.&nbsp;
He emphasised that the grand old party prioritises fair distribution of resources and inclusive growth, ensuring everyone benefits from the country's development.
On the contrary, the Bharatiya Janta Party focuses on aggressive growth and a "trickle-down" approach.
"They believe in what in economic terms is 'triple-down'. On the social front, we feel that the more harmonious society is, the less people are fighting, the better it is for the country.
"On the international relations front, there are probably some differences with regards to the way we relate to other countries but it will be similar," he said.

What is the difference between BJP and Congress? This is what Rahul Gandhi has to say

This statement came after Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri of the BJP criticised Congress leaders on Sunday for not being present during the immersion of Singh's ashes in the Yamuna River, while BJP leaders attended.
Dr Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. His cremation took place on Saturday at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi, with full state honours.

In response to the criticism, Congress leader and media department chairman Pawan Khera said, "Senior Congress leaders did not accompany the family to gather and immerse the ashes of Manmohan Singh out of our deference to the privacy of the family."
He added that following the cremation, Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited the family at their residence. "After discussing with them, it was felt that since the family did not get any privacy at the time of the cremation and some extended family members could not reach the pyre site, it would be appropriate to give them some privacy for the Phool Chunana and the immersion of the ashes which is an emotionally painful and difficult ceremony for close family members," Khera said.

The BJP accused him of disrespecting the late Congress leader.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla told reporters, "While the country is mourning Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's demise, Rahul Gandhi has flown abroad to ring in the New Year even as the nation observes seven days of mourning. Congress doesn't care for Dr Manmohan Singh. They abused and insulted him during his lifetime. They continue to do so now. Yesterday nobody went to collect his ashes. Congress even denied the Bharat Ratna to Dr Manmohan Singh. This is their true face."

Poonawalla further added, "Rahul Gandhi has changed the meaning of LoP from Leader of Opposition to Leader of 'paryatan' and Leader of the party. At a time when the country is in grief over the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi has left for 'paryatan' and party, as per media reports...Rahul Gandhi and 'paryatan' is nothing new. At a time when the 26/11 attack happened in Mumbai, he was partying all night. He is not concerned about the demise of Dr Manmohan Singh."
