The FIR has been registered under sections 115 (voluntary causing hurt), 117 (voluntary causing grievous hurt), 125 (act of endangering life or personal safety of others), 131 (use of criminal force), 351 (criminal intimidation) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
“We have transferred the case from local police to the Crime Branch,” a senior officer said, adding that police are likely to record the statements of Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput and may also call Gandhi for questioning.

Meanwhile, police have sought legal advice on registering a separate FIR in response to a complaint filed by the Congress, accusing BJP MPs of misbehaving with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge on the Parliament premises.
“We are taking legal opinion if the Congress leaders’ complaint can be converted into the FIR,” another police officer said, adding that a decision on this will be taken soon.
Talking about the investigation in the case against Gandhi, the officer said police would seek access to CCTV footage of the area where the incident occurred and also reach out to media houses to inquire about any video evidence they may have.
Police will also recreate the scene of crime if required during the investigation, the source said.
On Thursday, BJP MP Hemang Joshi, accompanied by party colleagues Anurag Thakur and Bansuri Swaraj, visited the Parliament Street police station and filed the complaint.
The Congress strongly rejected the claim, alleging that BJP MPs pushed Kharge and “physically manhandled” Gandhi.
The Congress also lodged a complaint in connection with the matter on Thursday.
A delegation of Congress MPs, including Digvijaya Singh, Mukul Wasnik, Rajiv Shukla and Pramod Tiwari, filed the complaint visiting the station in person.
After political protests turned ugly, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday banned demonstrations by MPs and political parties at any of the gates of Parliament, sources said.
“Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has issued strict instructions that no political party, Member of Parliament or groups of members will hold any dharna and demonstration at building gates of Parliament House,” parliament sources said.

Parliament scuffle: Delhi Police register FIR against Rahul Gandhi, Congress lodges counter plaint

New Delhi
<meta content="uuidF7Tzx15Yg0c6" name="uuid"/>
With the Winter Session of the Indian Parliament coming to an end soon, lawmakers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition INDIA bloc held protests, leading to a scuffle in which two BJP MPs were injured and had to be rushed to the hospital.
The injured BJP MPs were identified as Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput. A report by the news agency ANI said that Sarangi and Rajput were admitted to New Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
Hospital officials said that both the MPs suffered head injuries and were taken to the intensive care unit (ICU).
This incident triggered a war of words between the BJP and the Congress, with the former alleging that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi pushed Sarangi during the protest. The BJP <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/indian-parliament-scuffle-bjp-files-attempt-to-murder-case-on-congress-rahul-gandhi-785288">filed an attempt to murder complaint against</a> Gandhi.
The Congress, meanwhile, filed a countercomplaint at the Parliament Street police station.
Both parties addressed press conferences to explain their position:
<h2>What were the protests about?</h2>
On Thursday morning, the NDA was protesting in the Parliament's premises against the Congress party for "insulting" Dalit icon Babasaheb Ambedkar.

INDIA Bloc MPs led by Rahul Gandhi also held a protest on the premises and demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his remarks on Babasaheb Ambedkar.
<h2>What did the BJP say?</h2>
Speaking to reporters, Union Minister and senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that Rahul Gandhi behaved like a goon.
"He (Gandhi) started pushing there. Our elderly MP Pratap Sarangi fell, and he was seriously injured on the head. He was admitted to the ICU, and he is still under treatment... He was unconscious. His MRI scan is being done. Will physical power be used in the Parliament instead of logic?," Union Minister Chouhan said.

New Delhi With the Winter Session of the Indian Parliament coming to an end soon, lawmakers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition INDIA bloc held protests, leading to a scuffle in which two BJP MPs were injured and had to be rushed to the hospital. Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday during a debate marking 75 years since the adoption of the Constitution and used the occasion to rip into the Congress party and its leadership over the imposition of Emergency, and for making amendments in the statute for 'personal' gains.

<meta charset="utf-8"/>
BJP leader Amit Shah made strong comments about Congress' history with constitutional amendments. "Congress changed the Constitution 77 times in 55 years of rule," Shah said, directly criticising the opposition. He added, "The 54-year-old leader, who calls himself 'yuva', constantly talks about changing the Constitution. But I want to remind you, the power to amend the Constitution is already in the Constitution itself." Shah also pointed out that during the BJP’s 16 years in power, the party made 22 amendments to the Constitution.
Shah said that the Congress government under Jawahar Lal Nehru brought in the first Constitutional Amendment Act to “curtail the freedom of expression”.
“The first amendment was made on June 18, 1951. After the formation of the Constitution, Congress did not have enough patience to wait for the Lok Sabha elections. Article 19A was added to curtail the freedom of speech, and Jawahar Lal Nehru was the Prime Minister at that time,” he said.

Shah also criticised Nehru for introducing Muslim Personal Law instead of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), highlighting it as a key issue in the debate. He also raised the Shah Bano case and reaffirmed the BJP government's commitment to implementing the UCC across all states, declaring, “The BJP will ensure the UCC is introduced in every state.”
<h2 dir="ltr">Congress never worked for welfare of backward classes</h2>
Shah also responded to the opposition's ongoing accusations regarding the welfare of backward classes, saying, "Congress never worked for the welfare of backward classes." He strengthened his argument by adding, "Our Constitution has strengthened the roots of democracy."
Earlier in the day, the government introduced the much-awaited One Nation, One Election bill in the Lok Sabha. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal presented two important bills: the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha (lower House of the Indian Parliament), made an amusing slip of the tongue while addressing the parliament during a debate on the Constitution on Saturday (Dec 14).

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha (lower House of the Indian Parliament), made an amusing slip of the tongue while addressing the parliament during a debate on the Constitution on Saturday (Dec 14). While narrating an incident from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Gandhi referred to a seven-year-old child as a "young man," which left MPs from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) laughing. "Thousands of years ago in a dense forest, a yuva (youth)... a yuva of 6-7 years of age..." Gandhi said, referring to the story of Eklavya. Before he could complete his address, NDA members began questioning his choice of the word yuva (youth) for a child. He then continued with his speech, drawing parallels between Eklavya, who was asked to cut off his thumb, and the government’s actions affecting young people. "The way Dronacharya cut off Eklavya's thumb, you are cutting off the thumbs of the entire nation. Young people prepare for exams, but then they discover the papers have been leaked," Gandhi said. When you hand over India’s ports, airports, and defence industry to Adani, you cut off the thumbs of all honest and fair businesses in India." The Congress leader also attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by quoting VD Savarkar, saying that the Hindutva ideologue “did not find anything” Indian about the Constitution. He said that Savarkar was more drawn to Manusmriti than to the Constitution drafted by the Constituent Assembly. During the protest, two opposition MPs wore masks of Prime Minister Modi and Adani, while Rahul Gandhi played the role of an interviewer. Gandhi asked pointed questions about the duo's alleged relationship. The MPs responded with humour, saying, "We do everything together. We have had a relationship for years."&nbsp;

The mock interview escalated when Gandhi asked why Parliament was not functioning properly due to disruptions, with the MPs impersonating Adani and Modi suggesting that key government figures, including Home Minister Amit Shah, were missing from the session.

<h2>Parliamentary chaos continues</h2>

The protest is part of a wider push from the opposition to secure a parliamentary debate on the bribery charges levelled against the Adani Group in the US. Since the start of the Winter Session on November 20, Parliament has seen frequent washouts, with opposition parties accusing the government of blocking a discussion on the issue.

In a Facebook post earlier, Rahul Gandhi called on Prime Minister Modi to engage with the ongoing debate in Parliament. He urged, "Modi ji, come to Parliament, don’t fear an inquiry into Adani." Gandhi’s statement reflects the ongoing frustration within the opposition.

Opposition MPs protest over Adani issue, stage mock 'interview' in parliament

The United States on Saturday (Dec 7) firmly reacted to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s claims which alleged that the US State Department is trying to "destabilise India", its "deep state" elements are targeting India’s PM.&nbsp;

The US said that it is "disappointing" that the BJP would make such accusations.&nbsp;

Sambit Patra, the spokesperson of the ruling BJP on Friday, alleged that the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP)'s articles are "singularly focused" on the Adani group and its alleged proximity with the Indian government to undermine PM Modi, further linking it with the US, saying that the OCCRP was funded by the US Agency for International Department and "other deep state figures" like George Soros.&nbsp;

The US embassy spokesperson further reacted to the BJP's allegations, and told WION, "It’s disappointing that the ruling party in India would make these kinds of accusations."

"The US government works with independent organisations on programming that supports professional development and capacity-building training for journalists. This programming does not influence the editorial decisions or direction of these organizations," the spokesperson added.&nbsp;

He further stressed that all of this is in conjunction with the US State Department.&nbsp;

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha (lower House of the Indian parliament), Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday (Dec 4) that he was willing to visit the violence-hit Sambhal without his convoy, accompanied only by the police.&nbsp;

However, he said that the authorities had requested him to postpone his visit and asked him to return after a few days. Rahul stated that this was against the rights of the LoP and the Constitution.

Gandhi's statement comes as he and his sister, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi, were stopped at the Ghazipur border and barred from proceeding towards Sambhal. Subsequently, the Congress leaders returned to Delhi.

"We are trying to go to Sambhal, the police is refusing, they are not allowing us. As LoP, it is my right to go, but they are stopping me. I am ready to go alone, I am ready to go with the police, but they did not accept that too. They are saying that if we come back in a few days then they will let us go. This is against the rights of the LoP and against the Constitution. We just want to go to Sambhal and see what happened there, we want to meet the people. My constitutional right is not being given to me. This is the new India, this is the India to end the Constitution. This is the India to end Ambedkar's Constitution. We will keep fighting," Rahul said.

<h2>'Cannot be stopped like this,' says Priyanka</h2>

The Wayanad MP said that Rahul Gandhi being the Leader of the Opposition has full right to meet the victims of violence-hit Sambhal and cannot be stopped by the police.

"Whatever happened in Sambhal is wrong. Rahul Gandhi is the leader of the opposition, he has constitutional rights and he cannot be stopped like this. He has the constitutional right to be allowed to go and meet the victims. He also said that he would go alone with the UP police but they are not ready to do that either. The police have no answer. Maybe the situation in Uttar Pradesh is such that they cannot handle even this much. Why do they say so arrogantly that they have taken care of the law and order?" Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha (lower House of the Indian parliament), Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday (Dec 4) that he was willing to visit the violence-hit Sambhal without his convoy, accompanied only by the police. भाजपा क्यों डरी हुई है - अपनी नाकामियों को छुपाने के… pic.twitter.com/aZ5pDjXtZA — Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) December 4, 2024 × Congress MP KC Venugopal said that they were informed that the party could again visit the violence-hit region after four to five days. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday surpassed the 3.64 lakh lead achieved by her brother Rahul Gandhi in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls earlier this year, as she comfortably cruises towards her maiden electoral win from the Wayanad seat in Kerala.

As the counting progressed in the hill constituency, leaders of the Congress and its ally, the IUML, predicted a significant victory for her.

The Congress-led UDF's candidate, Priyanka, extended her lead over her rivals by over 4.1 lakh votes after nearly seven hours of counting of the ballots in the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll, according to the Election Commission.

Reacting to the lead achieved by Priyanka, Congress' ally Indian Union Muslim League and Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said she would get more votes than her brother Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha polls in April this year and will win by a record margin.

"An amazing first trend on counting day is the massive early lead for our leader @priyankagandhi ji in Wayanad, Kerala, by-election. People of Wayanad are surely going to record in victory margins today and Priyanka ji will make Parliamentary debut with a grand win," Reddy said in a post on 'X'.

IUML supremo Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal said that going by the trends, Priyanka will get more votes than what Rahul got and the majority she achieves would also be higher than that of her brother.

A similar view was expressed by IUML's national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty.

Priyanka's husband, Robert Vadra, told reporters in Delhi that his wife was "breaking all records and the trends show the love and affection she has received from the people of Wayanad.

"Whenever she is committed to something, she puts her heart and soul into it and you will be seeing a lot more of her in Wayanad and if required, I will also be there," he said.

On the other hand, BJP leader Anil K Antony, earlier in the day, had claimed that though Priyanka has achieved a good lead, her victory margin would be less than what Rahul got in the 2024 and 2019 LS polls in the hill constituency.

According to the latest EC figures, Priyanka had a lead of 4,10,931 with 6,22,338 votes. LDF's Sathyan Mokeri was behind her with 2,11,407 votes and NDA's Navya Haridas was in the third spot with 1,09,939 votes.

Rahul had got 6,47,445 votes and won by a margin of 3,64,422 votes against his nearest rival, CPI's Annie Raja, in the LS polls this year. In 2019, he had got 7,06,367 votes and had won by a margin of 4,31,770 votes.

However, the bypoll turnout in Wayanad, which has over 14 lakh registered voters, was around 65 per cent, a decline from the close to 74 per cent in the LS polls held in April this year and much lower than the over 80 per cent turnout in the hill constituency in the 2019 general elections.

After winning from Rae Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh as well, in this year's polls, Rahul vacated the Wayanad seat, and the party nominated his sister Priyanka, paving the way for her electoral debut.

The counting of votes commenced at 8 am with postal ballots being taken up first.

The strong rooms, where the EVMs were kept, were opened more than an hour before counting began.

The bypoll for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat was held on November 13.

Of the 16 candidates who contested, the main contenders were Priyanka, ruling CPI(M)-led LDF's Sathyan Mokeri, a political veteran, and BJP-headed NDA's Navya Haridas.

Adani bribery case | He should be arrested: Rahul Gandhi, other Indian leaders react

India’s opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday (Nov 16) took a dig at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, comparing him to United States President Joe Biden over what he called “memory loss”. Gandhi, who is the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the lower house of the Indian Parliament, was speaking at an election rally in the poll-bound Western Indian state of Maharashtra.

Gandhi in his speech recalled how Joe Biden once introduced Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky as Russian President Vladimir Putin at an event.

"My sister told me that she had heard Modi Ji's speech. And in that speech, whatever we say, Modi Ji is saying the same thing these days. I don't know. Maybe he has lost his memory. The former President of America used to forget and he had to be reminded from behind. The President of Ukraine came and the President of America said that Russian President Putin had come. He had lost his memory. Similarly, our Prime Minister is losing his memory," said Gandhi at the event.

Gandhi attacked Modi for accusing the Congress party of attacking the Constitution.

"For the past one year, I have been saying that the BJP has been attacking the Constitution in my speeches. But, PM Modi is saying that Congress is attacking the Constitution. He came to know that people were getting angry, and he is now saying that I am attacking the Constitution," he said.

"I also told him in Lok Sabha that Congress and the INDIA bloc will abolish the 50 per cent reservation cap. I told him that you have lost your memory, but still he is saying that Rahul Gandhi is against reservation," the 54-year-old Congress MP said.

He also targeted the 74-year-old prime minister over the issue of caste census.
