Alia’s inclusion to the spy universe indicates that Aditya Chopra is leaving no audience segment out of the equation. She will be playing a spy in an out-and-out action entertainer, and this will be a big novelty for the audience base that she appeals to. It’s going to be Alia Bhatt like never before.”</p>

<p>The source further added, “Aditya Chopra is very bullish about Alia and has big plans for her character arc in his universe. He is looking to start a franchise within the spy universe centered around Alia’s character and he will pull all stops to mount the yet untitled film on a scale that none can imagine."</p>

<h2><strong>Yash Raj Films' Spy Universe</strong></h2>

<p>Yash Raj Films envisioned a spy universe with Salman Khan’s 2012 film <em>Ek Tha Tiger.</em> This was followed by <em>Tiger Zinda Hai</em> in 2017. Hrithik Roshan joined the spy universe with 2019 film <em>War,</em> which also had Tiger Shroff but his character died in the film. It was then followed by this year's <em>Pathaan</em>, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham.</p>

<p>Now <em>Tiger 3</em> is in the works and will bring back Salman and Katrina again. <em>War 2 </em>starring Hrithik Roshan and <em>Tiger vs Pathaan</em> starring Salman and Shah Rukh are also in the works.</p>

Based on the author's bestseller 'Calling Sehmat', the film had Alia Bhatt playing Sehmat an undercover spy from India who marries into a Pakistani Army family in order to relay information to India, prior to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.&nbsp;<br />

Sikka's book was based on a real-life Kashmiri woman who dedicated her life to India. But the author feels that while the book sends out this important message- the film's ending completely derails the message that he had intended to convey.&nbsp;<br />

"Meghna made a blunder with that ending in 'Raazi'," Sikka said and added, "In the book- when Sehmat comes back to India- she goes in front of the tricolour and salutes and thanks to the motherland for having her back."<br />

"The film should have also had a similar ending. Instead, Meghna made her comeback as a depressed woman. It seemed that a Kashmiri woman had done a blunder of sorts," the author added.&nbsp;<br />

Sikka feels that had the ending been according to the book- 'Raazi' would have definitely won National awards. "I had told people soon after watching the film that it will not win the National Awards. That's what happened eventually. With 'Calling Sehmat' I was sending a message that Kashmiris are not traitors. But in the film, you brought her back as a depressed person. That was a negative ending."<br />

Sikka states that he had promised Gulzar to let his daughter direct the film. His only condition was that Alia Bhatt should play the lead role. "I appointed Meghna for the film and signed the dotted line only when they agreed to my conditions. &nbsp;The screenplay was to be cleared by me. I took an active part but at the same time trusted Meghna as she had done a lot of research around the book and impressed me with her talk."</p>

Showed it in Imperial Hotel, Delhi to senior army officers. This was 2 months before the release of the film- but &nbsp;I was not invited. I learnt much later. Had I been invited I would not have let this happen. I watched it after the film got released. Meghna kept telling me that I will show it to you but it never happened. She knew that if I had watched, I would have raised objection about the ending."<br />

The author, whose first produced film 'Nanak Shah Fakir' won three National Awards in 2016, feels that the ending of 'Raazi' completely went against its case in front of the National awards jury. "The last scene made all the difference in the mindset of the people," he added.&nbsp;<br />

The writer, whose new book 'Vichhoda' is set in partition era, spent 8 years researching on 'Calling Sehmat' and felt cheated when the film did not end the way he had envisioned it. "A writer is like a mother to a story. You disown that mother- you ruin the child. That's what they did with 'Raazi'."<br />

Sikka though adds that the film was a commercial success because the first 1 hour of the film was gripping and Alia Bhatt delivered a compelling performance. "She put the film together through her innocence through her eyes, through her looks. She was fantastic."<br />

He alleges that the director did not speak to him post the film's release.&nbsp;<br />

Did he express his concerns to Gulzar later, we asked. Instead of answering, the author asked "I am eager to know- who tried to delay the publishing of 'Calling Sehmat'? Who tried to stop my inclusion at the Jaipur Literature Festival?"<br />

The writer states that what happened with him is a common practice in Bollywood where once the story rights are given to makers, writers seldom have a say in the screenplay. But he feels that the practise needs to end and for that questions need to be raised.&nbsp;</p>

Learning from his past mistakes, Sikka states he will not trust anyone too blindly with 'Vichhoda's' screenplay and see to it that makers remain true to the original story. While the book has been receiving a positive response, the director is already onto his next few books. He has already submitted the final draft of one book, and is on the verge of completing 'Remembering Sehmat' - a sequel to 'Calling Sehmat'.&nbsp;<br />

An ex-Navy officer, Sikka has served as a journalist during the Kargil war and is now a communication director of a leading corporate conglomerate. He writes to spread the message of peace, he says. "I took 20 lakhs less when I sold the rights of 'Calling Sehmat' to Junglee Pictures. I gave all the money to charitable organisations. I don't write for the money- which is why it hurt more when they fiddled with such a powerful story."&nbsp;</p>

He said, "In the book, the story ends with Sehmat saluting the Tricolour. If the film had the same ending, the film would have won the National Award. I told the director that you have stopped the film from getting a National Award by cutting the Tricolour scene in the film.”</p>

<p>“Though this was done by the wishes of the filmmakers, but I still have resentment over it,” he added.&nbsp;</p>

We very easily paint all Kashmiri Muslims with the same brush, saying that Kashmiris are terrorists. We have to understand that no mother wants her son to carry a stone in his hand. Terrorism has been being funded there for so many years but there have also been Kashmiris like Sehmat who gave up their entire families for the country. Much has changed since the abrogation of Article 370. My next book is 'Section 370', and Sehmat is the inspiration again."</p>

<p>At times when I saw women whooping it up in Hollywood films, I felt they were copying us. Watching the eight stunning actresses of 'Ocean's 8', I felt a deep and prideful sense of déjà vu.</p>

<p>This could be our 'Veere Di Wedding' (VDW) girl gang divided by half. Firstly, our veeres are no less glamorous, articulate and self-assured than the 'Ocean's 8' girl gang. Secondly, they seem to address exactly the same issues of body-shaming, cat fights and pay parity.</p>

<p>Business as usual. But wait. The similarities are even more uncanny. During VDW, Kareena Kapoor Khan became a mother to the youngest superstar of India, Taimur Ali Khan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Anne Hathaway, who played one of the veeres in 'Ocean's 8', also became a mother during her film's shooting. She has spoken about how she was body-shamed for her additional weight after motherhood until she reached the sets of her girl-gang film, where her co-stars came forward to make her feel complete and fulfilled by complimenting her on her glowing looks.</p>

<p>So guys, forget about cat fights. These veeres from Bollywood and Hollywood stand by one another. The whole mythology of women actors fighting their way through the shooting falls apart when we see the genuine bonhomie among the female actors of 'Ocean's 8' and VDW.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I saw the Australian actress Cate Blanchett, who plays one of the leads in 'Ocean's 8', telling one of her interviewers that the whole theory of women not getting along on the sets of a film was started by male journalists. It is meant to be some kind of a male turn-on to imagine female co-stars fighting.</p>

<p>Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania genuinely hit the 'ok' button in their togetherness. And that comes as a surprise to all those who were waiting to see fireworks among the actresses. Says Sonam, "Sorry to disappoint those who think we were slapping and scratching one another's faces. We really got along like a house on fire."</p>

<p>We really can't be blamed for thinking actresses can't get along when working together. Aeons ago, when Sharmila Tagore and Mala Sinha shared screen space in a 1960s film called 'Humsaya', there were stories of one actress slapping the other. Decades later, Sharmila was embroiled in another cold war with Raakhee Gulzar on the sets of Yash Chopra's 'Daag'.</p>

<p>Decades thereafter, it was Kareena Kapoor, eventually destined to be Sharmila Tagore's daughter-in-law, who got into a squabble with Bipasha Basu on the sets of 'Aitraaz'. Kareena ended up calling Bipasha a kali billi (black cat). Talk about a 'cat fight'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Seeing Kareena bond so effortlessly with her co-stars in 'Veere Di Wedding', I was reminded of her 'kali billi' catfight.</p>

<p>2018 was an ideal year to be a female hero. First came Rani Mukherjee in 'Hichki', breaking all the myths about films that spotlight female heroes, especially those with disabilities.</p>

<p>Then came Alia Bhatt as a patriotic spy who creates havoc in her Pakistani in-laws' home in 'Raazi' to become the first female hero in five years with a Rs 100-crore box office earning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The trio of girl-power hits was completed with 'Veere Di Wedding'. And just when you think it can't get any better for women in Bollywood, there came Kajol in 'Eela Helicopter'. Though it didn't do well, it reminded us that Kajol remains a woman in a cabinet of men in the cinematic parliament.</p>

<p>Deepika Padukone commands a higher fee than her husband Ranveer Singh. And the show will continue in 2019, when Kangana Ranaut, who virtually sacked the director and appointed herself in his place in 'Manikarnika', shows us what women can do when given positions of power.&nbsp;<br />

Raazi, Andhadhun, Mulk: The 9 best Hindi films of 2018

<p>No one would have predicted Vicky Kaushal's stardom back in 2015 when he had made his debut in Neeraj Ghaywan's critically acclaimed film 'Masaan'. A poignant film on love and loss, the film was a favourite in almost every international film festival but was not really a commercial success back home. It was critically lauded for sure, but one would have never thought that its male lead- a tall, unconventional looking, the lanky boy would become the nation's favourite actor, three years down the line.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The man, who started with art-house cinema, made a transition to more commercial space this year with two big-budget films- 'Sanju' and 'Manmarziyaan'- but also balanced it out with two digital, small-budget films- 'Love Per Square Foot' and 'Lust Stories'. Each of the films had him playing strikingly different characters but Kaushal aced in almost all of them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ranbir Kapoor may have won the maximum accolades for <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-sanju-review-ranbir-kapoor-and-vicky-kaushal-shine-in-hiranis-version-of-dutts-story-147872">Rajkumar Hirani's flawed biopic 'Sanju',</a> but if there's one person who stood out amid a crowd of very well-known faces, it was Kaushal whose performance as the socially awkward Kamlesh or Kamli struck a chord with one and all.&nbsp;<br />

Kaushal's role was not the main lead. Hirani's 'Sanju' was primarily a father-son story but Kaushal's sheer talent and his on-screen camaraderie with Ranbir made the film also a story of two friends. &nbsp;Kamli's as a character could have easily been forgotten as just one of the supporting acts in the film. But Kaushal managed to shine and make people sit up and notice his character of a friendly Gujarati businessman in the US who befriended Sanju as he and his family were grappling with the sudden demise of Nargis Dutt. &nbsp;Kaushal's performance left such an impact that it got people curious about the actual person on whom the character was based.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'Sanju' was not the first time this year that Kaushal impressed critics and fans alike with his performance. His last release before 'Sanju' was in Karan Johar's &nbsp;story on Netflix' production 'Lust Stories.' A film primarily about women and their sexual desires, Kaushal's buffoonery struck a chord with one and all. Kaushal played an ignorant husband whose pleasure in bed comes literally in five thrusts much to his wife's (Kiara Advani) dismay. &nbsp;Kaushal's role was an unconventional one. A role that perhaps a lot of actors would be apprehensive to play as it did not glorify his machismo, instead poked fun at his inadequacies in bed. <p>Of the five films that the actor was seen in this year, in three, Kaushal did not play the central character- yet managed to leave a lasting impression in each of these films. Each of the characters was strikingly different but Kaushal was convincing in all these parts. Be it as the supportive husband whose world comes crashing as he finds out <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-raazi-review-alia-bhatt-vicky-kaushals-film-serves-as-a-textbook-example-on-how-to-make-espionage-films-sans-jingoism--136082">his wife is a spy in 'Raazi'</a>, or the ambitious guy craving to own a space of his own in the ever-growing &nbsp;city of Mumbai in 'Love Per Square Foot' or even as the commitment-phobic, undecided Vicky in Anurag Kashyap's 'Manmarziyaan', Kaushal made each of the characters his own.&nbsp;</p>

But when I saw the film, I felt no one else could play the part the way Alia did. That’s the magic of an actor,” says Vicky, who can’t stop gushing about Alia’s performance.</p>

<p>“The power she holds as a performer can’t be expressed. There is a lot of honesty in her eyes that come across whenever she is playing a particular character. So, when someone like her is your co-star, it helps in many ways,” says Alia's co-star of the film</p>

On the set, whenever you hear someone hurting herself, it has to be her. She would keep on banging her knee against the bed or her toe somewhere,” he shares.</p>

<p>He also told about one more funny incident from the sets, Vicky reveals that every time Alia would hold the gun, everyone would get worried.</p>

<p>“There are many instances in the film where she is holding a gun, so every time she was holding one, the person who is in front of the gun is not scared but everybody else used to get worried that she might end up hurting herself. <p>Brilliant script, powerful performances by the actors and some active word of mouth has resulted in <em>Raazi </em>inching closer to Rs 90 crore mark at the box office.</p>

<p>Currently running in its second week since the release, the film is raking in good numbers even though there is tough competition from the recently released <em>Deadpool 2</em> and limelight hogger <em>Avengers: Infinity War.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>Meghna Gulzar’s film managed to rake in Rs 3.15 crore yesterday and with it stands at a grand total of Rs 88.48 crore. <em>Raazi</em> is expected to enter the Rs 100 crore club by the end of its third weekend at the box office if it continues to perform at this pace.&nbsp;</p>

Meghna Gulzar, who impressed one and all with her taut film <em>Talvar</em> in 2016, is back with another thriller - <em>Raazi</em>. And while the film has its emotions in place, the director, who is also the screenplay writer along with Bhavani Iyer, weaves an intricate espionage thriller which keeps you hooked throughout&nbsp;its two hours twenty minutes run time. There isn't any dull moment in Meghna Gulzar's <em>Raazi.&nbsp;</em><br />

The director&nbsp;dives into the main plot from the first itself. Sehmat (Alia Bhatt) is a college-going Kashmiri girl, whose father(Rajit Kapur) is a spy for the Indian intelligence. His dying wish is to send his daughter across the border as it's wartime. He cannot do the job anymore, and he feels his untrained, naive girl has grit and potential to become a spy. So Sehmat is married to Iqbal Syed(Vicky Kaushal), a Pakistani army officer. Iqbal's father is a top ranking army officer himself, who has contacts in the top rung - and hence Sehmat can fit in perfectly in the family and pass on the desired information at home.&nbsp;</p>

Does she deliver? Mostly, yes. As the new daughter-in-law who is trying to fit into a new household, as the woman of steel, who knows what her job is and what she is there for. The only portions where Alia falters are the scenes which show her being trained. Where unsuspecting Sehmat is attacked by her trainer time and again to make her learn an important lesson in life. Every time her trainer attacks her to check her instincts, she yelps- in that's the most synthetic yelp I've ever heard. But truly that one little glitch can be ignored, for Alia, like always, delivers a mature, restraint performance.&nbsp;</p>

The film also boaast some incredible male-actors. Vicky Kaushal as the unsuspecting, good guy Iqbal Syed brings a lot of vulnerability to his character. Kaushal always adapts himself to his characters. Be it in <em>Masaan </em>or&nbsp;<em>Raman Raghav 2.0</em>, or now <em>Raazi,</em> the actor brings in a lot of conviction to all his roles. I wish he had more screen time, but Kaushal reaches out to the audience with his soft, understated performance.&nbsp;<br />

The other actor to watch out for in <em>Raazi </em>is Jaideep Ahlawat. Those who remember him in Gangs Of Wasseypur would know that Ahlawat has the ability to leave an impact despite his screen time. In Raazi, Ahlawat plays the spymaster, who may appear to be devoid of any emotions, but always knows what is right. Ahlwat's performance is sharp and smart making his character a memorable one.&nbsp;</p>

Sehmat's communications with Indian intelligence happens through set up inside the bathroom right next to a big window, which remains open for view from the main entrance of the house. Also, its a family of army officers, yet when things go awry, no one suspects the Indian bahu within them. They all seem to have believed she has converted.&nbsp;<br />

Raazi though overcomes these glitches quite well. From the soulful music by Shankar Ehsan Loy and Gulzar's beautiful lyrics (<em>Ae Watan </em>is my favourite) to editor Nitin Baid's timely cuts which make the thriller overboard to the mellow, matter-of-fact story that doesn't take sides- <em>Raazi </em>is a winner throughout.&nbsp;<br />

Raazi comes at a time when the entire nation is enthused about the idea of nationalism. Yet, the film doesn't do unnecessary bashing, doesn't take sides, and presents a patriotic film - a story that would make you proud of your country and numerous unsung heroes.
