News brief: Big stories of the day

Priyanka Chopra, who was one of the guests invited for the royal wedding yesterday said that she teared up after seeing the ceremony and has left a heartfelt note to the close friend and bride Meghan Markle.

Taking to Twitter, Chopra shared a picture of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from yesterday and wrote "Every once in a while there is a moment when time stands still. That happened today. You, my friend, were the epitome of grace, love and beauty. Every choice made at this wedding by you both will go down in history, not just because it was your wedding but because this incredible wedding stood for change and hope."

"Thank you for being the perfect picture of all things good. Seeing your union and love blessed in front of my eyes made me so happy and tear up! I wish you both love happiness and togetherness always," she said.

The 35-year-old opted for a light lilac jacket and a matching pencil skirt by Vivienne Westwood for the big day – along with an epic fascinator – but revealed the outfit didn’t arrive until the very last minute.

From Oprah Winfrey to Priyanka Chopra to Prince Harry's ex Chelsy Davy, the royal wedding saw Hollywood royalty rub shoulders with British aristocracy.

Speaking about it, she said, "Bharat is the Indian movie I signed this year. It's the quintessential Bollywood movie, which I haven't done in many years. A lot of them were dramatic and thematic. This one's going to be out and out entertainment. I'm excited! I haven't been back to do a movie in two or three years now."

She explained what Bollywood is all about and defined the kind of cinema the industry produces. She said, "We have every other genre. Yes, music is a very important part of it, but we don't have synchronized dancing in everything we do. Plus, Bollywood is not a place. Every country and every culture has its stereotype, I get that. Here, everyone has superpowers and aliens only land in America. I just really want Indian cinema to break through that and for people to be introduced to the other forms of Indian cinema we have."

Also, Priyanka being herself couldn't stop giving us reasons to love her more and so she added, "To me, being an Indian actor, or an actor of South Asian descent, or a woman of color, or an immigrant-whichever title you like-being all of those people and being in America and getting the kind of welcome and love I've gotten within the industry, it feels like a sense of acceptance. I hope with me getting that acceptance, it opens up the floodgates for more people who look like me. I hope that sort of makes the conversation for actresses or people of colour to get more opportunities because it's the opportunities that lack."

"I'm an actor and an artist, and I want to go where my work takes me. I don't want to settle for one or two countries, I want the world. I'm very clear about it. As long as people want to watch me, I want to entertain”, she added.

The confusion then develops into tension when Jake’s kindergarten teacher played by Octavia Spencer informs the parents that his gender-nonconforming play may be more than a phase. Our very own desi star Priyanka Chopra is seen in glimpses towards the end of the trailer.

Priyanka Chopra meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi

Global icon Priyanka Chopra might be charting the ladders of success, engaging in Hollywood projects and making a name for herself but there is still something that pulls her back time and again -- her skin colour.

Recently in an interview, Priyanka revealed her colour bias incident when she was rejected for a role in a Hollywood film because of her brown colour. She said, "It happened last year. I was out for a movie, and somebody (from a studio) called one of my agents and said, ‘She’s wrong—what word did they use?—‘physicality.’ So in my defence as an actor, I’m like, ‘Do I need to be skinnier? Do I need to get in shape? Do I need to have abs?’ Like, what does ‘wrong physicality’ mean?”

“And then my agent broke it down for me. Like, ‘I think, Priy, they meant that they wanted someone who’s not brown.’ It affected me," said the Quantico actor, who is the only South Asian actor to headline an American show.

She said, “People don’t go watch females in movies because they don’t believe that they can be heroes. The world has to change the way they look at their heroes. Specifically how men can help is changing the ‘locker-room talk’ conversation. Nothing will change until we break the stereotypes of gender in our normal, day-to-day life."
