Danny Ings returned from injury to score a controversial winner from the penalty spot as Southampton came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 on Monday and climb to fifth in the Premier League.

Brighton took the lead from the spot, with Pascal Gross sending goalkeeper Alex McCarthy the wrong way after James Ward-Prowse handled the ball in the area.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's men found an equaliser just before half-time, when Jan Vestergaard produced a towering header from a Ward-Prowse corner.

Then, with nine minutes remaining, substitute Ings fired home after Southampton were awarded a spot-kick, with Brighton players claiming the foul took place outside the area.

Hasenhuttl was delighted to see his team grind out a win while not at their best.

"I didn't see the first penalty," he said. "For the second one, that is why we have VAR, especially when it is about decisions if it is in or not then you need this.&nbsp;

"I think it was clear inside the box. It is not nice to get a penalty against you but the decision from what I have seen was relatively clear."

Brighton started the match brightly in front of 2,000 supporters -- back in the stadium for the first time in nine months after the easing of coronavirus restrictions.

They took the lead in the 26th minute when referee David Coote pointed to the spot after a Danny Welbeck cross hit the raised arms of Ward-Prowse and Gross converted.

Brighton looked to get forward at every opportunity while Southampton struggled to get going but Saints were level just before the break.&nbsp;

Ward-Prowse continued his impressive record from set-pieces, crossing the ball from a corner for Vestergaard to head past powerfully past Mat Ryan.

Ings, who had been out of action for five weeks, was brought on at the start of the second half.

With 13 minutes to go, Kyle Walker-Peters was brought down by Solly March. The referee initially awarded a free-kick before a lengthy VAR intervention changed the decision to a penalty.

Ings made no mistake and his side held on for the victory, which lifts Southampton to 20 points, one behind fourth-placed Leicester. Brighton stay 16th on 10 points.

Disappointed Brighton boss Graham Potter said the first challenge appeared to take place outside the box.&nbsp;

"I don't know if there was a second but that's what the referee seemed to think," he told Sky Sports.

"I thought it was quite an even game so I'm disappointed with the result. If it's factual and the offence is inside and they've proved that's the case, then that's what it's there for and it's what you have to accept."

Super-agent Mino Raiola has said that his client Paul Pogba is “unhappy” at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> club Manchester United and exit Old Trafford in the next transfer window hinting that it may be the end of one-time world’s most expensive player as a Red Devil.

Raiola said that the World Cup-winning French midfielder needs a “change of scene” after struggling to establish himself as a definite starter under manager Ole Gunnar Soskjaer.

"Paul's unhappy at Manchester United, he can't express himself any more as he would like to and as we expect of him," Raiola told Italian newspaper Tuttosport.

"If anyone doesn't understand, they don't understand anything about football."

Pogba’s presence has been overshadowed since the arrival of midfielder Bruno Fernandes and the Frenchman has repeatedly spoken about his frustrations at club level while on international duty.

Paul Pogba 'unhappy' at Manchester United, wants to leave club: Agent Mino Raiola

Liverpool turned on the style for their returning fans on Sunday, beating Wolves 4-0 to join Tottenham at the top of the Premier League after another episode of the Son Heung-min and Harry Kane show.

Jurgen Klopp's men had not had the chance to play in front of their supporters since they ended their 30-year wait to be crowned English champions but made up for lost time.

"You'll Never Walk Alone" rang out around Anfield as 2,000 home fans -- the maximum allowed under coronavirus rules -- witnessed strikes from Mohamed Salah, Georginio Wijnaldum, Joel Matip and an own goal.

Earlier, Jose Mourinho's Spurs beat faltering Arsenal 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Leicester, who ended the day in fourth spot, struck late to beat rock-bottom Sheffield United 2-1.

Liverpool and Wolves both looked dangerous on the counter-attack in the early stages of the late game at Anfield, with the home side taking the lead when Salah capitalised on an error by Wolves captain Conor Coady.

Wijnaldum made it 2-0 with a wonderful curled finish shortly before the hour mark and Matip put the game beyond Wolves with a close-range header before the late own goal from Nelson Semedo.

Liverpool have now won 31 of their past 32 home league games, scoring 93 goals while conceding just 25.

"The game, the atmosphere, it was so nice I had goosebumps," an emotional Klopp told the BBC. "They started 'You'll Never Walk Alone' -- really nice. I never knew it could feel that good.

"This started in February and we were waiting to get normality back. Normality is good -- I don't think we appreciated it as much. It was very, very touching."

<h2>- Deadly duo -</h2>

The Spurs-Arsenal match was dominated by Son and Kane, who have shredded defences this season.

Tottenham took the lead in the north London derby in the 13th minute with a wonder goal from the South Korean, who curled a brilliant long-range effort into the top corner after being set free down the left by Kane.

The home side, also playing in front of fans, doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time as they took apart their local rivals on the break.

Giovani Lo Celso played in Son, who returned the earlier favour to tee up Kane to smash in from close range.

Son and Kane have now combined for 31 Premier League goals, the second most of any pair after Chelsea's Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard (36).

Tottenham, who have not lost a league match since the opening day of the season, now have 24 points after 11 matches, level with Liverpool and two clear of Chelsea.

Mourinho praised his star forwards for their all-round contribution.

"Harry Kane clearing balls in the box, Sonny for the first 60 minutes as a winger and then a second striker -- it is not just about scoring goals and being world-class players," he told Sky Sports. "It is about being great guys and doing your best for the team.

"We grew up. I can imagine lots of people can imagine three matches in a row -- against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal -- would be a moment for us to drop points and go back to 'normality' but we didn't go back to 'normality', we are there."

Arsenal, by contrast, are now 15th in the Premier League following their sixth defeat of the season, and struggling badly for goals.

Leicester ended a four-game winless run in all competitions at an empty Bramall Lane to push the Blades closer to a return to the Championship.

Clubs in tier-three areas of England, with tougher coronavirus restrictions, still have to play behind closed doors, while tier-two zones such as London and Liverpool can have crowds of up to 2,000.

Jamie Vardy kept his cool when through one-on-one and beat Aaron Ramsdale with a confident right-foot finish in the 90th minute.

Ayoze Perez had put Brendan Rodgers's men in front before Oli McBurnie headed an equaliser for Sheffield United, who now have just one point from 11 games.

In the first match of the day, Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke both scored twice as Crystal Palace made West Brom pay for Matheus Pereira's first-half red card in a 5-1 rout at the Hawthorns.

Liverpool spark Anfield party to join Spurs at top of Premier League

Chelsea came from behind to beat Leeds United in front of two thousand fans in Stamford Bridge, the first attendance in nine months due to COVID-19 restrictions extending their unbeaten run to 16 in all competitions.&nbsp;

However, Blues boss Frank Lampard said that there is nothing wrong with supporters dreaming they can win the Premier League title but stressed his players cannot afford to get complacent.

Chelsea topped the table after beating Leeds United for the first time since September 2018.&nbsp;

Asked if Chelsea fans are right to consider them title contenders, Lampard told reporters: "There's certainly nothing wrong with the fans thinking that.

"It's great to have them back, their input was huge, the noise huge. You can see how excited they are at the end that we are top of the league," he said.

"My job and our job is to know that it's a long season and the next question is how consistent can we be with this form, how much we can improve, because I believe there is a lot more we can do and there will be a lot of challenges ahead."

Lampard faces a nervous wait to learn the extent of an injury picked up by Morocco winger Hakim Ziyech in the first half.

"It is a hamstring injury which we will find out the severity of in the next couple of days," he said. "It is obviously a disappointment going into this busy period."

Chelsea boss Lampard urges his players to stay grounded despite title talks

"If I watch football games at the moment then Chelsea, for me, look like favourites," Klopp told reporters ahead of Liverpool's home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

"They have the biggest squad, great players playing well together after a rusty start - and they are full on.

"They have unbelievable opportunities to change in games and make changes from one game to the other - so that is it."

Lampard built his squad after spending nearly $295.64 million in the summer transfer window. Despite a rough start, Chelsea have bounced back in form with 16 unbeaten matches in all competitions. Their recent win against Leeds put them on the top of Premier League table.

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs are not far behind with a game in hand they have chances to topple Chelsea back to the third position. However, injury-plagued Liverpool have seen a drop in form. The Reds have to cope with a congested fixture list and several injury setbacks.

"I don't feel we are chasing anyone at the moment - or that anyone is chasing us," the German coach said. "Pressure is there for us, but it's about how much you think about that pressure, to be honest."

'Chelsea look like favourites': Jurgen Klopp on who could win Premier League this season

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta believes that Tottenham Hotspurs deserve to be on the top of the Premier League table, however, it is too early to see them as real title contenders.

Jose Mourinho's Spurs are unbeaten since their sole loss that came in the season's opening weekend and have the opportunity to move 11 points clear of their north London rivals Arsenal when they meet on Sunday.

"I think it's very early in the season to see who is title contenders or not," Arteta told reporters. "But what you can say is that they (Spurs) are in the position they are because they are doing things the right way."

Arsenal, on the other hand, have been struggling this season as they sit on 14th position on the table. They have 13 points after their opening 10 matches, which is their lowest since the 1981-82 season.

"The table is like that because they deserve it more than us and they've done things better than us," Arteta said. "We have to accept that. But we want to go there and make that gap three points smaller."

London based clubs will witness the return of 2,000 fans after the city was placed under Tier 2 COVID-19 restrictions by the British government.&nbsp;

"We've been waiting for this moment for a long time and I'm not going to complain," Arteta said.

"Honestly, I'd rather play in a stadium with an atmosphere, with some fans and at this moment it's going to be for them with their supporters and the next week it will be us."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said that his side will never give an excuse of injuries when they do not play to their full potential.

The Reds have been battling an injury crisis but still, they have been able to show impressive performances. The side is currently second in the Premier League and has reached the last 16 in the Champions League.

"Whoever is available, we are still Liverpool. That`s how we see it. It means we want to win the game. Actually, I think most of the people think we have to win the game. You can see that when you speak before a game, or after a game, people don`t talk about who is available -- he is not available, he is not available, yes, yes, no -- nobody really would allow you to use such a situation as an excuse. And we don`t, we don`t," Goal.com quoted Klopp as saying.

"The situation is tough, 100 per cent, but we are at matchday -- where are we, nine, 10 coming? Not sure. So, it feels quite long already but it`s not even a third of the season. So, who cares who is where at the moment. We try to play football. We won some games, drew in others, lost one massively. So, that`s the job," he added.

During the start of the season, Liverpool had to endure injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Naby Keita. However, Arnold and Keita made their way to training on Friday.

Liverpool is on the second-longest unbeaten home run in Premier League (64 games).

'We're still Liverpool': Klopp plays down injury concerns

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp vented his frustration regarding Brexit's impact on English football, with the German concerned tough new transfer rules being implemented on January 1 are a negative consequence of Britain leaving the European Union (EU).

As a part of post-Brexit regulations, Premier League clubs will not be allowed to sign players from European Union (EU) countries without a work permit while foreign players under the age of 18 cannot be signed.&nbsp;

"I am still waiting for the first advantage of Brexit that someone can tell me," Klopp said in comments published in the Guardian on Friday. "What really improves after Brexit?

"It's obviously not my thing to judge, but as an interested person I just wait until the first really positive impact of Brexit."

The German coach went on to say that the football officials had done all they could to lessen the impact of Brexit on their industry and suggested that there could have been even tougher restrictions had they not put up a fight.

"Michael Edwards (Liverpool's sporting director) was involved in a lot of these discussions and the clubs fought pretty hard for a solution -- kind of a good solution or as good as possible," Klopp added.

"Without the discussions it would have been worse."

"I am still waiting for the first advantage of Brexit that someone can tell me," Klopp said in comments published in the Guardian on Friday. "What really improves after Brexit? "It's obviously not my thing to judge, but as an interested person I just wait until the first really positive impact of Brexit." The German coach went on to say that the football officials had done all they could to lessen the impact of Brexit on their industry and suggested that there could have been even tougher restrictions had they not put up a fight. "Michael Edwards (Liverpool's sporting director) was involved in a lot of these discussions and the clubs fought pretty hard for a solution -- kind of a good solution or as good as possible," Klopp added. "Without the discussions it would have been worse."

'Waiting for first advantage': Jurgen Klopp talks about negative consequence of Brexit

Frank Lampard, who succeeded Maurizio Sarri as the Chelsea boss, is keen on extending his stay in Stamford Bridge.&nbsp;

The 42-year-old manager has just 18 months left on the contract after taking over the reins in July 2019.&nbsp;

Last year, Chelsea finished at the fourth spot sealing a Champions League berth this season. However, the Blues manager is now eyeing Premier League title after spending nearly 220 million pounds in this year's transfer season.&nbsp;

"In terms of my contract, it seems to have flown by, the time I've been here," Lampard told a news conference.

"I knew there were a lot of circumstances at the beginning that were going to make last year transitional and maybe slightly difficult.

"Now I feel like I would love to be part of the long-term plan here. The signings we made in the summer, other than probably Thiago Silva, particularly, were signings for now and the future."

After beating Leeds on Saturday, Chelsea extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 15.&nbsp;

Yet Lampard feels his players need more time to challenge on both domestic and European fronts.

"At the minute, I think we're working towards something and people are getting very excited and mentioning us being in a title race this year," he said.

"I always saw it as a longer plan than that and it might take until next year for us to really challenge, because of the signings, because of the bedding-in process."

Postponements and resumption: A turbulent year of 2020 for sports world

Edinson Cavani showed why Manchester United handed the veteran Uruguayan the bumper two-year contract others balked at as he turned defeat into victory at Southampton on Sunday.

The 33-year-old came off the bench with United trailing 2-0 to score twice and set up Bruno Fernandes for the other goal in a thrilling come-from-behind win reminiscent of the club's glory days under Alex Ferguson.

Cavani's joy at making his first major contribution for United has been tempered by the prospect of a domestic ban for a misjudged social media post after the game.

He used the Spanish term "negrito" (small black person) in thanking a friend for his congratulations, but despite the affectionate context, Cavani could still fall foul of the Football Association's minimum three-match ban for offensive comments on social media.

Cavani will though be available for a reunion against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday and could exact revenge for being cast aside by the French champions.

PSG's all-time record goalscorer was allowed to leave on a free transfer when his contract expired in June and did not even hang around as the Parisians reached the Champions League final for the first time in August.

Instead, Cavani kept himself fit working on a farm in his homeland and indulging his passion for ballet before United came calling in the final days of the transfer window in October with a deal worth a reported&nbsp;£210,000 per week ($271,000).

<h2>- Focal point -</h2>

After seven months out in the cold, Cavani understandably took time to make his mark in Manchester, but his impact against Southampton showed the different dimension his predatory instincts in the box offer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men.

"Sometimes, when we've scored goals, it had to be the 'perfect' goal, walking it in, with an extra pass and great skill," said Solskjaer.

"Edinson has been around the block and scored so many goals and played football for so long. He's been between those posts so many times, he's seen this game before, he's scored that goal before.

"To have a focal point in the box is important for us, we've not really had that since Romelu (Lukaku) left. Anthony (Martial), Marcus (Rashford), Mason (Greenwood), they're different types of forwards. He gives us a great balance and a mix. We wanted to mix it up and Edinson had a great impact."

Cavani has made just one start under Solskjaer, in a 4-1 thrashing of Istanbul Basaksehir last week, but may have done enough to move ahead of Martial and Greenwood in the pecking order to start on Wednesday.

Victory over Basaksehir restored United's grip on Group H after a shock defeat in Istanbul undid some of their good work, having beaten PSG away and RB Leipzig 5-0 in a brilliant start to the section.

PSG sit three points behind Solskjaer's men and face a humiliating group-stage exit should they lose again to United.

Dispatching Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Mauro Icardi, who took his place at the Parc des Princes, from the competition PSG desire most, would be poetic justice for Cavani after the manner of his exit from the club.

Cavani's parents complained PSG had not shown him the respect he deserved when his playing time under Thomas Tuchel diminished drastically after the signing of Icardi last summer.

Tuchel has held on amid growing discontent over PSG's performances at home and abroad so far this season.

Dropping out of the Champions League would almost certainly signal the end of Tuchel's time in Paris. Should Cavani inflict the final blow, it would only rub salt in the wound.

Cavani proves his worth to Man Utd in time for PSG reunion

Fulham climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone on Monday after finally solving their penalty woes in a shock 2-1 win at Leicester, while West Ham rode their luck to move into fifth place with a dramatic 2-1 victory against Aston Villa.

Scott Parker's side won for just the second time in the league this season thanks to Ademola Lookman's 30th minute opener and Ivan Cavaleiro's penalty eight minutes later.

Fulham had missed three of their four previous penalties this term, but Cavaleiro held his nerve to convert from the spot for the crucial second goal.

Harvey Barnes scored for Leicester in the 86th minute, but Fulham held on and move one point above the bottom three.

"Cav slipped last week and I'm not on Twitter or Instagram but I can only imagine what was being said, the jokes at his expense and Cav would have seen that," Parker said of Cavaleiro's recent penalty miss against Everton.

"I said to him: 'Are you ready to take one if we get it?' He looked at me dead in the eye and said: 'I'm ready'.

"The courage to step up there are the things we need. There's no denying there's relief. I've spoken to them about not letting defeats cripple us."

It was an emotional success for the Cottagers, with Lookman celebrating his goal by displaying one of Papa Bouba Diop's Senegal shirts after Fulham's former midfielder died aged 42 at the weekend.

"That was a decision we as a club made and the players were happy to do it. For someone to lose their life at a young age is tragic," Parker said.

Leicester would have gone second with a win, but instead they remain fourth -- three points behind leaders Tottenham -- after a second successive league defeat.

<h2>- Watkins woe -</h2>

At the London Stadium, West Ham earned a third successive victory after Villa striker Ollie Watkins missed a late penalty and then saw a stoppage-time equaliser disallowed by VAR.

West Ham got off to the perfect start in the second minute when Angelo Ogbonna made an astute run to the far post and rose above Matt Targett to head a corner past Emiliano Martinez.

Villa drew level in the 25th minute when Jack Grealish ran at the West Ham defence before letting rip with a 20-yard drive that took a slight deflection on its way past Lukasz Fabianski.

West Ham regained the lead in the 46th minute after an inspired substitution from David Moyes.

Moyes sent on Said Benrahma at half-time and with his first touch the winger chipped in a cross to Jarrod Bowen, who glanced a deft header over Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez for his fourth goal of the season.

Villa winger Trezeguet won a penalty in the 74th minute when Declan Rice tugged at his shirt to prevent him having a shot.

Watkins has been in fine form this season, but he let West Ham off the hook as his penalty hit the bar.

There was more misfortune to come for Watkins in the final moments when he swept home from close-range, only to see the goal chalked off for the narrowest of offside decisions.

"We got fortunate that in some way it was offside. I think we can play much better, but I'm taking tonight's result," Moyes said.

Frustrated Villa boss Dean Smith added: "We've missed a penalty and had a goal disallowed for a part of the body that can't put the ball in the net.

"The only reason Ollie Watkins' arm is out there is because he's fouled. He either scores or it's a penalty."

Smith was also angry that Grealish was called a cheat by one of West Ham's backroom staff.

"One of their members of staff called Jack Grealish a diver and a cheat. I spoke to David (Moyes) and he said he'd deal with it," Smith said.

Fulham shock Leicester to escape relegation zone, West Ham go fifth

Jose Mourinho claimed his side were not happy just to settle for a point from a 0-0 draw at Chelsea that moved Tottenham back to the top of the Premier League.

Chelsea enjoyed the better of a game of few chances, but Spurs showed a resilience and steel to hold out for a fourth consecutive clean sheet that bolstered their claim to be contenders for a first league title in 60 years.

"The one thing I take from the game is normally a point here is a positive thing, to stay top of the league is also a positive thing, and my dressing room is not happy," said Mourinho.

"That for me is fantastic. It's a complete change of mentality and of personality."

The evidence of the 90 minutes suggested Mourinho was indeed more than happy just to extend an unbeaten run in the league to nine games as cautious tactics from both saw the sides largely cancel each other out.

"We didn't have many chances, I agree, but how many did they have?" Mourinho added.

"It's a game where we respect them and they also respect us, nobody gambled. Everybody was in the situation of one mistake, I punish you, I win."

A share of the spoils means Chelsea remain just two points behind their London rivals in third, with Liverpool trailing Tottenham only on goal difference.

Mourinho also ensured he did not lose three consecutive league meetings to the same manager for the first time in his career and to one of his former players, Frank Lampard.

<h2>- Kane, Son snuffed out -</h2>

Chelsea were wary not to give Tottenham any chance to counter-attack in the manner that cut open Manchester United and Manchester City in recent weeks.

"The clean sheet factor against a team we've seen recently are set up to counter-attack and have amazing players to counter-attack, I think that part of our game was excellent," said Lampard. "Against Harry Kane and Son (Heung-min), we didn't really give them a sniff."

Only once did Spurs' pace on the break threaten to cause Chelsea problems when Steven Bergwijn turned inside and blasted just over the bar early on.

The arrival of Edouard Mendy has resulted in a huge upturn in Chelsea's defensive record with now six clean sheets in seven league games and the Senegalese produced a smart stop to deny Serge Aurier's strike from outside the box.

But that was the only effort on goal either side managed before the break as Chelsea controlled possession with little penetration.

Timo Werner did produce an exquisite finish to fire in off the far post, but the goal was ruled out for offside against the German international.

Chelsea began to push with more purpose early in the second half as three times Tammy Abraham could not get a clean contact on inviting crosses from Reece James and Werner.

"We completely dominated the game possession wise," added Lampard. "You can't play through this Tottenham team because they are really compact and with any slack pass they want to counter-attack.

"I thought it would be hard to create chances but I thought we had enough to win the game."

Lampard showed his intent to try and win the game by throwing on Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz and Olivier Giroud in the final quarter, while Mourinho kept Gareth Bale in reserve for the full 90 minutes.

Hugo Lloris was finally forced into a meaningful save 10 minutes from time when the Spurs captain turned Mason Mount's powerful strike behind.

But the biggest chance to win the game came in stoppage time when Giroud pounced on a weak header from Joe Rodon, but he did not get enough on an attempted lob over Lloris and his French international teammate easily saved.

"We didn't have many chances, I agree, but how many did they have?" Mourinho added. "It's a game where we respect them and they also respect us, nobody gambled. Everybody was in the situation of one mistake, I punish you, I win." A share of the spoils means Chelsea remain just two points behind their London rivals in third, with Liverpool trailing Tottenham only on goal difference. Mourinho also ensured he did not lose three consecutive league meetings to the same manager for the first time in his career and to one of his former players, Frank Lampard. - Kane, Son snuffed out - Chelsea were wary not to give Tottenham any chance to counter-attack in the manner that cut open Manchester United and Manchester City in recent weeks. "The clean sheet factor against a team we've seen recently are set up to counter-attack and have amazing players to counter-attack, I think that part of our game was excellent," said Lampard. "Against Harry Kane and Son (Heung-min), we didn't really give them a sniff." Only once did Spurs' pace on the break threaten to cause Chelsea problems when Steven Bergwijn turned inside and blasted just over the bar early on. "I thought it would be hard to create chances but I thought we had enough to win the game." Lampard showed his intent to try and win the game by throwing on Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz and Olivier Giroud in the final quarter, while Mourinho kept Gareth Bale in reserve for the full 90 minutes.

Tottenham take back top spot but not 'happy', claims Mourinho

Liverpool's ever expanding injury list has prompted Jurgen Klopp to take on the football authorities and broadcasters over a gruelling schedule that he feels is doing little to protect the players.

The English champions head into Tuesday's Champions League clash with Ajax without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri, Trent Alexander-Arnold and James Milner.

Klopp was infuriated that Liverpool were chosen for Saturday's lunchtime kick-off in a 1-1 draw at Brighton just over 60 hours after they faced Atalanta in Europe on Wednesday night.

"After Wednesday, Saturday at 12:30 is really dangerous for the players," said Klopp, who also sarcastically congratulated a BT Sport interviewer for Milner's hamstring injury in the second half.

However, he is not alone and has formed an unlikely alliance with Manchester United and Manchester City, who have also faced early Saturday kick-offs after Wednesday night games in the Champions League this season.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said his side had been "set up to fail" when they won at Everton after returning from a trip to Turkey barely 48 hours before they travelled to Goodison Park.

City boss Pep Guardiola has also been a strong advocate of allowing managers the chance to make five substitutions.

"All around the world there is five substitutions. Here we believe we are a special league with just three players, we don't protect the players," said Guardiola after his side's 1-1 draw with Liverpool earlier this month that characterised the problems of a condensed calendar.

Both sides chased the game in an enthralling first 45 minutes before settling for a point as fatigue set in after the break.

"We've reached a point where you start to think that with so many matches and so many injuries, the spectacle is not the same," said Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane last week.

<h2>- Joyless football -</h2>

Despite losing a month of the season due to a late start to the campaign caused by the three-month coronavirus shutdown last season, barely any sacrifices have been made in English football to ease the strain on players.

Both domestic cup competitions have been retained alongside a full 38-game Premier League season, European football commitments and two international breaks with an extra game for European nations.

Guardiola has repeatedly argued that the gruelling winter schedule in England when other major leagues take a mid-season break comes at the expense of better quality matches for fans to enjoy.

And he believes that is only exacerbated in a season so far without fans inside the ground.

"The problem is today the players lose the joy of playing football. Before it was nice playing football once or twice a week with spectators, now it is in three days another one."

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder drew Klopp's ire after standing his ground in a manager's meeting last week over the issue of five substitutes.

Two previous votes have failed to garner the 14 votes needed from the 20 Premier League clubs to change the rules over fears from those with less resources that such a change only benefits the bigger clubs with deeper squads.

"I've got incredible respect for these top managers because they produce top results and win things," said Wilder, whose side sit bottom of the table with just one point from 10 games.

"But they're selfish, they look after their own clubs. They're going to be bothered about Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea, which I understand and respect. I would be the same, but I'm bothered about Sheffield United and it doesn't help us to have five subs."

Yet, the evidence across Europe shows the continent's biggest clubs are struggling to match their usual levels of dominance even with five subs.

Real Madrid and Barcelona find themselves well off the pace in La Liga having already lost three times each. Paris Saint-Germain have also lost three of their opening 12 matches in Ligue 1, while Juventus sit fourth in Serie A, behind Sassuolo, as they go for a 10th consecutive title.

Klopp may not be getting much sympathy from those fighting just to remain in the Premier League.

But the cost of cramming so much football into a shortened calendar threatens not only player welfare, but the enjoyment for fans watching a watered down product.

'Selfish' or 'protecting the players'? Klopp's complaints divide managers

Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani is set to be investigated by the Football Association over a social media posts which he subsequently deleted. Wolves' Raul Jimenez out with fractured skull in horror collision

Arsenal have a long way to go before they can be considered title contenders and need at least a few more transfer windows to develop a squad capable of bridging the gap with the elite Premier League clubs, manager Mikel Arteta has said.

Arsenal last won the Premier League in 2003-04 under Arsene Wenger and have failed to make the top four since 2015-16. The north London club finished eighth last season - their worst result in England's top-flight since 1994-95 - 43 points behind champions Liverpool.

Arteta has tasted some success since his appointment in December last year, winning the FA Cup, but the Spaniard is aware of the challenges he faces to restore the club to the top of the English game and win the title.

"It will take a few windows at least to do that. To establish yourself to compete at the level of certain clubs in this league, which is nearly 100 points, it takes time," Arteta told Sky Sports.

"In football, time is very precious and people are very impatient. If you don't respect the process and you ask certain people to do certain things when the foundations are not there, it's a really dangerous thing to do.

"We have to prepare for difficult moments. We knew that right from the start because it's not something that has happened in the last year - it has happened many years in the past."

Arsenal are 12th in the league this season with 13 points from nine matches ahead of Sunday's visit by ninth-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Arsenal a few transfer windows away from mounting title challenge - Arteta

Tottenham Hotspurs boss Jose Mourinho feels that Chelsea's heavy transfer spending has put pressure on Frank Lampard to win the Premier League this season.&nbsp;

Chelsea's heavy spending in transfer window has put pressure on Lampard: Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho takes his table-topping Tottenham side to former club Chelsea this weekend determined to prove he is back where he belongs at the top of the Premier League.

Four straight wins have taken Spurs to 20 points after nine games, ahead of Liverpool on goal difference, but Frank Lampard's Chelsea are just two points behind them.

Champions Liverpool travel to Brighton, while goal-shy Manchester City host Burnley in the unaccustomed position of 13th in the table and Arsenal seek&nbsp;a win to lift them out of their slump.

AFP Sport looks at some of the main talking points ahead of the weekend action in the Premier League.

<h2>Mourinho has point to prove</h2>

Spurs boss Mourinho has a point to prove against Lampard, with whom he won two Premier League titles at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho and the former Chelsea midfielder-turned-manager have met four times in different dugouts.

Lampard gave Mourinho a bloody nose when his Derby side dumped Manchester United, then managed by the Mourinho, out of the League Cup on penalties in 2018.

After returning to Chelsea as manager, Lampard twice outwitted his former boss, by now in charge at Tottenham, in the Premier League last season.

The 57-year-old veteran will be hoping this season's League Cup win against Chelsea on penalties has turned the tide. He has never lost three consecutive league matches against the same manager or club before.

Mourinho was keen to play down title talk after last week's impressive 2-0 win at home to Manchester City, which took them top.

"People cannot expect us to come here and after one season we are fighting for the title," he told the BBC.&nbsp;

"We are not fighting for the title, we are just fighting to win every match. But we are going to lose matches, we are going to draw matches."

But, like it or not, Spurs&nbsp;are in the title mix and will have to get used to the pressure, which will be ramped up on Sunday.

<h2>Can Arteta stop the rot?</h2>

Arsenal's indifferent start to the season has left them languishing 12th in the Premier League table, with just four points from their past five matches.&nbsp;

Mikel Arteta, whose side host Wolves on Sunday, remains optimistic despite his side's poor run and struggles in front of goal -- Arsenal have now not scored from open play in five Premier League games.

"When I see the young talents we have got here and the future that we can produce for them, it's things that get me really excited," he said.

"We know that we are going to go through difficult periods because you don't change issues that have been going on for years in a small amount of time."

Fans have been patient so far with their manager, who arrived late last year, but will start to get edgy unless they see an upturn in results soon.

<h2>City search for goals</h2>

Manchester City, who host Burnley on Saturday, have not scored more than once in a Premier League match since September.

It was the same old story last weekend. City had 22 shots in their 2-0 defeat against Tottenham, who mustered just four shots, with two on target.

The club's record goalscorer, Sergio Aguero, had a brief runout in Wednesday's 1-0 win at Olympiakos as he makes his way back to fitness following a hamstring injury.

City boss Guardiola said this week he was being cautious with the Argentine striker.

"We have many, many games to play this season and we'll need him," he said. "What we want is him to recover in his best condition."

But it is a difficult balancing act for the manager, whose side are already eight points behind Spurs and Liverpool.

Can Arteta stop the rot? Arsenal's indifferent start to the season has left them languishing 12th in the Premier League table, with just four points from their past five matches. "We know that we are going to go through difficult periods because you don't change issues that have been going on for years in a small amount of time." Fans have been patient so far with their manager, who arrived late last year, but will start to get edgy unless they see an upturn in results soon. City search for goals Manchester City, who host Burnley on Saturday, have not scored more than once in a Premier League match since September. "What we want is him to recover in his best condition." But it is a difficult balancing act for the manager, whose side are already eight points behind Spurs and Liverpool. Mourinho and Lampard brace for Premier League summit meeting

Chelsea will not lack incentives to knock Tottenham Hotspur off their Premier League perch when the capital`s most bitter derby kicks off at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The west Londoners have lorded it over Spurs for the past two decades, bagging sackfuls of silverware while Tottenham yearn for a return to their glory days.

Under Mauricio Pochettino Spurs twice finished above Chelsea in the standings, but missed out on the title to the Blues by seven points after an intense race in 2017.

The season before Chelsea finished 10th but even then had the last laugh in a bad-tempered draw at Stamford Bridge that killed the title dream of Pochettino`s team.

Tottenham are again hinting at a title charge and will go into the weekend top of the league after at least nine rounds for the first time since 1985.

That the architect of their resurgence is Jose Mourinho -- the manager once idolised by the Stamford Bridge faithful for delivering three Premier League titles in two stints -- makes it all the harder to swallow for Chelsea.

Apart from a remarkable 6-1 win at Manchester United, Spurs` relatively comfortable run of fixtures led many to suggest they were in a false position. Last week`s 2-0 win over Manchester City changed all that. It was a Mourinho masterclass.

City had more shots and more possession but hosts Tottenham were clinical and the fact tht they left Gareth Bale on the bench spoke volumes for the depth they have in their squad.

"Mourinho wants to win a trophy here. He knows we are capable of winning. We have all that we need to win. He`s the right man to bring us to the trophy," forward Lucas Moura said.

BARREN GROUND

Stamford Bridge has been a barren hunting ground for Tottenham though, with one away league win in 30 years.

Victory for Chelsea would see them leapfrog Spurs, who may have already have been replaced as leaders by champions Liverpool who visit Brighton &amp; Hove Albion on Saturday.

Tottenham have 20 points, the same as Liverpool, with Chelsea in third place on 18 after three successive wins.

Frank Lampard`s side warmed up for the derby with a 2-1 victory at Stade Rennais on Tuesday to seal a spot in the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

Tottenham are in action 48 hours later on Thursday at home to Bulgarian side Ludogorets in the Europa League which, while being a disadvantage, was dismissed by Lampard.

"He (Mourinho) has got a strong squad and he can make rotations. But if you`re not going to get up ready to attack a London derby, then you shouldn`t be in this game," the Chelsea boss said.

Liverpool will be eager to bounce back from Wednesday`s stumble in the Champions League, when they lost 2-0 at home to Atalanta, as they face Brighton on Saturday lunchtime.

Manchester City host Burnley in the odd position of being as far away from top spot as they are from the relegation places.

City`s defeat at Spurs left them languishing in 13th place with 12 points and a minus one goal difference. Their fightback needs to begin soon and Burnley may be the fall guys.

Burnley`s home win over Crystal Palace on Monday means only two clubs, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United, are still without a victory and they meet at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> clubs in Liverpool and London have been allowed to welcome some supporters back into their stadiums after the UK government announced different tiers for areas of the country after the second lockdown ends.

Greater Manchester has been classified as ‘very high’ risk area and will remain in Tier 3 – the only tier which doesn’t allow fans to attend matches when the new rules come into effect on December 2.

Premier League clubs such as Manchester City, Manchester United, Leicester City, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Wolves and Aston Villa will be unable to host fans back in the stadium. However, Merseyside has been dropped to Tier 2 which means defending champions Liverpool and Everton can have 2,000 supports back in their stadiums while maintaining strict COVID-19 safety measures.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said the Premier League's top six could be left without 11 fit players unless changes are made to protect the welfare of stretched squads.

Already depleted by an injury crisis, the Reds will play three games in six-and-a-half days this week.

Klopp's men saw off Leicester City 3-0 in Sunday's late Premier League kick-off and will welcome Atalanta to Anfield in the Champions League on Wednesday before travelling to Brighton for Saturday's 1230 GMT kick-off.

"If we keep playing Wednesday night and Saturday 12.30, I am not sure we finish the season with 11 players, all the top six or seven," said Klopp in an impassioned interview with Sky Sports, the largest domestic rights holder of Premier League games.

Under the terms of a £4.5 billion ($6 billion) deal for three seasons, Sky have the first pick from each round of games with BT Sport choosing their headline match second.

But Klopp said broadcasters should adapt to the circumstances of a season like no other, with matches crammed into the calendar to make up for the lost time of a three-month postponement to last season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Everybody tells me it is difficult, but it is difficult for the players. That's what is difficult. The rest is just a decision on a desk in an office," added Klopp.

"If someone tells me again about contracts I go really nuts because the contracts were not made for a Covid season.

"We all have to adapt. You stand here with a facemask, would you have thought a year ago you would go somewhere with a facemask and we cannot be close? That's the situation. Everything changed, but the contract with the broadcasters is still 'we said this so we keep this'."

<h2>- 'Brutal' fixture list -</h2>

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said his side had been "set up to fail" when they had to travel back from facing Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League on a Wednesday night before a lunchtime kick-off away at Everton.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is hoping to secure qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League away to Rennes on Tuesday to be able to rest players for the final two group games ahead of a "brutal" schedule.

"I have looked at the schedule and it is brutal. We play Arsenal on Boxing Day and then Aston Villa two days later," said Lampard.

"We need to try to win this game and if we can get into the next round then we could rest players, but we still want to win the group. I am confident in the squad, even if we rotate."

Klopp claimed to even have considered sending a youth team to Brighton to prevent more injuries.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain missed the win over Leicester, while Mohamed Salah was absent after testing positive for coronavirus.

"We will go there shaking," said Klopp, claiming he had even thought of "sending" the points to Brighton.

The German stressed his complaints were not motivated by self-interest.

"It was never about us when I spoke about it, it's about all the players. It's about the England players, all the players who play the European championship in the summer," he continued.

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has left Lionel Messi out for the Champions League trip to Dynamo Kiev after losing Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto to long-term injuries in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid.

"Sometimes, you have to protect your players because the calendar is incredible," said Koeman.

Liverpool will not have 11 fit players without changes, warns Klopp

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp on Tuesday welcomed the government's decision to allow fans back into stadiums, a move described by the English Football League chief as a "lifeline" for smaller clubs.

Lower-league clubs, who do not enjoy the TV riches of the Premier League, have been struggling to make ends meet, with supporters shut out during the coronavirus pandemic.

But under plans unveiled on Monday, up to 4,000 people will be able to return to outdoor sports stadiums, depending on levels of Covid-19 in the area, from December 2.

Manchester City boss Guardiola welcomed the potential limited return of fans.

"If they believe it is the best, we will do it and hopefully it will work," he said. "If the government has decided, they must have listened to the scientists and doctors."

Liverpool manager Klopp also welcomed the development, but said he had questions about the logic being applied to the numbers involved.

"The problem is, I just struggle to put faith in any kind of announcements," he said.

"I don't understand why it is only 2,000 people in a 60,000 stadium. But I am not surprised. It's good news, good sign. I'll take it, 100 percent."

<h2>- 'Welcome start' -</h2>

English Football League chairman Rick Parry told the BBC he was looking forward to getting fans back in more substantial numbers but it was a "welcome start".

"At League One and League Two level (third and fourth tiers) it could be very significant," he said. "It's not just the money, it's a very welcome return to an atmosphere, and if we get 4,000 at League Two level it would be very welcome. It can be a very welcome lifeline."

The EFL is considering moving some of its fixtures scheduled for December 1 to the following day in order to get fans in.

Premier League chiefs have welcomed Monday's announcement but made it clear that only a return to bigger crowds would ease the sport's financial problems.

Three of the biggest clubs -- Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City -- are located in regions under the strictest "tier-three" conditions, so it remains to be seen whether they will be allowed to admit fans.

The Rugby Football Union is considering whether to use the climax to England's Autumn Nations Cup campaign on December 6 as an opportunity to prepare for the eventual full return of supporters to Twickenham.

Eddie Jones' side are likely to face France in the competition's showpiece event, which could be staged in front of a crowd of up to 4,000 spectators if the area is considered to be one of low coronavirus risk.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli showed some breathtaking catching skills, thanks to an indoor intra-squad cricket match as he used his footballing skills to deflected a powerfully stuck shot to convert it into a sensational catch. The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> midfielder took to social media platform to post the video where Tottenham Hotspur players, including the likes of Gareth Bale and Joe Hart, were seen playing cricket.

In the video, the batsman hits the ball straight at Alli, who used his foot to deflect it straight up and completed the catch to leave everyone present awestruck. The video soon went viral on social media with International Cricket Council also posting it on Twitter.

"I think @joehartofficial was impressed with this one," wrote Dele Alli in the caption.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli showed some breathtaking catching skills, thanks to an indoor intra-squad cricket match as he used his footballing skills to deflected a powerfully stuck shot to convert it into a sensational catch. The Premier League midfielder took to social media platform to post the video where Tottenham Hotspur players, including the likes of Gareth Bale and Joe Hart, were seen playing cricket. Tottenham Hotspur's Dele Alli flaunts jaw-dropping cricket skills - Watch

Liverpool shrugged off an injury crisis to move level on points with Tottenham at the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Leicester, while 10-man Arsenal were left to cling on for a 0-0 draw at Leeds by Nicolas Pepe's red card on Sunday.

The champions were without the injured Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, while top scorer Mohamed Salah was absent due to a positive coronavirus test.

Yet, Jurgen Klopp's men were still imperious in easing past a Leicester side that had started the weekend on top of the table.

The Foxes did not do themselves any favours when Jonny Evans turned James Milner's corner into his own net to reward Liverpool's bright start.

Diogo Jota then became the first ever Liverpool player to score in his first four home league games with a downward header from Andy Robertson's cross.

Only a combination of goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and the woodwork kept Liverpool from a repeat of the 4-0 thrashing they dished out to Leicester when the sides last met in December.

But Robert Firmino then rounded off a fine night for the champions with a towering header from another Milner corner six minutes from time.

"Playing them like that tonight, I do not take for granted," said Klopp. "The boys were on fire."

Liverpool have now set a new club record of 64 unbeaten league games at Anfield.

<h2>- Pepe lets Arsenal down -</h2>

Leicester's defeat means Arsenal are just five points off the top four, but Mikel Arteta was furious at Pepe's lack of discipline as the Gunners were lucky to escape with a point at Elland Road.

"It's unacceptable," said the Spaniard, whose side have won just one of their last five league games.&nbsp;

"With 10 men it is a big disadvantage. I really liked the personality of the team when Pepe let the team down, how we stuck to our jobs. Obviously it makes it really difficult."

Leeds are 14th after their third consecutive match without a win, but Marcelo Bielsa's men were left cursing their luck as Rodrigo, Patrick Bamford and Raphinha all hit the woodwork in the closing stages.

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had been given a rare chance in the central striker's role, but he was starved of service even before Pepe's dismissal.

Aubameyang's penalty in a 1-0 win at Manchester United last month is the only league goal Arsenal have now scored for nearly 500 minutes.

<h2>- Everton bounce back -</h2>

Everton recovered from three straight defeats to beat Fulham 3-2 thanks to a double from Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The England international moved to the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts with Abdoulaye Doucoure also on target for Carlo Ancelotti's men before half-time.

Bobby Decordova-Reid had equalised at 1-1 for Fulham, but their woes from the penalty spot continued as a third different player this season missed from the spot when Ivan Cavaleiro scooped his effort over the bar.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek reduced the deficit 20 minutes from time, but Everton held on to win for the first time in five league games to move up to sixth.

"The most important part of the game was to be back to winning," Ancelotti said.

"We lost energy in the second half, the players were tired. I changed to put more fresh legs on the pitch but we had to defend. In the end it went well."

Fulham remain one place above the relegation zone after their third defeat in four games.

Bottom of the table Sheffield United's wait for their first win this season goes on after they were beaten 1-0 by West Ham at Bramall Lane.

Sebastien Haller scored the winner in the 56th minute with a fierce shot that flashed into the roof of the net to move the Hammers up to eighth.
